Adam Miller End of Year Review With excerpts from my Annual Report Every summer vacation always ended with writing an essay, “What I did over my summer vacation.” Why not start the summer by reflecting back over the accomplishments and milestones of the last year?

Having said farewell to our long-time educator, Caren Plotkin, we welcomed our new Director of Congregational Education, Dr. Anna Salomon. Under Anna’s leadership we began the first Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning program in Southwest Florida. A Temple Shalom exclusive! Classes on Jewish humor and the history of the American Jewish community were near capacity and more will be offered in the coming year. Dr. Daniel Matt inspired us through his teaching on Jewish mysticism as the Shirley and Henry Kraus Scholar in Residence, and Dr. Amy-Jill Levine filled the sanctuary in our joint program with the Naples United Church of Christ. Adult programming also expanded with the addition of Senior For ‘Em events.

Prioritizing the importance of relationship building, Alicia Browner joined our team in the new position of Membership Engagement Coordinator. Many have already experienced her warmth and personal touch – in the way they have been greeted at the congregation, as well as her phone calls for birthday and anniversaries. Halfway through the year, the leadership team further stabilized with the addition of Eli Montague as Executive Director. Having survived his first Season in Naples, he now has the opportunity to build upon and further develop the culture of One Family at Temple Shalom.

March saw the culmination of a year’s planning with the magnificent Dream On event, co-chaired by Stephanie Heuer, Neil Heuer, Veora Little and Dr. John Little. I am grateful to the chairs, as well as to the dozens of volunteers who worked on the committees and behind the scenes to make that dream a reality. Thank you to all who attended and made the evening a sparkling success – including our special honorees Dr. Mark Rubin, Anne Rubin, Howard Solot and Janet Solot.

The maroon Gates of Repentance were replaced by new High Holy Day prayerbooks, and we began to livestream worship services and events. Countless individuals have expressed their great joy and wonder at being able to stay connected with Temple Shalom when away from Naples or when their health made it too difficult to attend experiences in person. Thank you to Stu Warshauer, Men’s Club and Sisterhood for taking this long held vision and making it reality.

May 2016 marks 13 years since my ordination from Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion. One of my dreams has been to develop the type of congregation exemplified by the Relational Judaism model – a sacred place where people feel deeply connected one to the other. For all of the reasons above, I saw that dream become a reality this year. Most importantly, at two of the more difficult moments this year, I witnessed a packed sanctuary, and even social hall, full of people gathered together to mourn with and offer comfort to the Feldman and Waltzer families. Many in attendance created relationships within our Temple Shalom Preschool, Religious School, and through our Temple Family.

It is at all these moments and more that I am proud to be the rabbi at Temple Shalom. Our home. May we all be inspired to Dream On, and make even bigger dreams for Temple Shalom’s future as a center for living Judaism, loving Judaism and sharing Judaism become reality.

The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning is bringing new classes to Temple Shalom!

Instructor: Rabbi Miller Rhythms of Jewish Living - Central ideas and texts which inform our daily, weekly and annual rituals as well as life cycle observances.

Purposes of Jewish Living - Essential Jewish theological concepts and ideas as they unfold in the Bible, the Talmud and other sacred texts.

The Holocaust As Reflected in Diaries and Memoirs - 10 weeks beginning February 1, 2017. Wednesdays from 12PM to 1:30PM. Instructor: Dr. Anna Salomon Journey into the world of Jewish individuals and communities as the events of the Holocaust unfold around them. Explore the profound record of first-person accounts in diaries and memoirs uncovered in the years since the Holocaust.

What a wonderful year! I’d like to start by thanking our senior staff Rabbi Miller, Seyla Cohen, Dr. Anna Salomon and Eli Montague for working together as a team to make this year a success. I’d also like to thank our incredibly hard working staff who are often behind the scenes making everything come together seamlessly. Thank you Randi, Maxine, Jeanette, Alicia, Victor and Rick. We appreciate all that you do for us!

It was an exciting beginning of the year kicked off by the High Holidays and the introduction of our new Machzor(prayer book). Our Adult choir, directed by Peter Lewis, sang beautifully and continued to inspire us with their music at Shabbat services throughout the year.

This year we had 17 students in our B’nai Mitzvah program. Our tutors Perry Switzen, Dr. Michael Rubner, Howard Moeckler, and Hari Jacobsen are continuing to teach and contribute their time to the success of our students. In addition, we had four ladies who completed a year and a half of study and became Adult B’not Mitzvot in a beautiful service on March 19.

Cantor It’s a pleasure working with our children in the Religious School in different aspects including 9th and 10th Donna Azu grade Confirmation, our 6th and 7th grade Bar and Bat Mitzvah preparation in our blessings and prayers class as well as school wide programs. Highlights included our Star Wars themed Purim Spiel and our Children’s Chocolate Seder.

In the greater Collier County community, it was a pleasure to be involved involved in the Interfaith Thanksgiving service, JFCS Senior Center, Federation candle lighting at the Mercato, Chanukah Tea, community Yom HaShoah service, PFLAG, and the Federations celebration of Israel.

I’m excited to share that we’ve already begun planning for our second Cantor’s Concert, on March 5, 2017 at 7:30PM – From Bimah to Broadway, Encore! Our wonderful committee, chaired by Nancy and Jack Wiadro, is hard at work on this spectacular event.

As we end the year, I thank all of our volunteers as well as our Board of Trustees who give so much of their time to the temple. Your hard work and dedication helps to ensure the future of Temple Shalom. I look forward to another wonderful year with my Temple community!

I am honored to be the new President of Temple Shalom. For those of you who do not know me, I have been a member for almost 18 years. I have been very active at the Temple, including Preschool and Religious School. I’ve held board positions and most recently was the Recording Secretary on the Executive Committee. I also filled in as Interim Executive Director several years ago. I have made a commitment to serve as I believe that I can make a contribution and the Temple is where my heart is. I also feel so blessed that we have a great staff and clergy that work hard every day to make Temple Shalom our home.

This year we will continue to develop our One Family Initiative, which provides our congregants with opportunities to be engaged in Temple life and with one another. Volunteering is one way to make that connection and we have many opportunities if you are interested.

We will be transparent and will report Board actions every month so you will know what the board is doing on your behalf. In addition, we will feature Board members in the Voice so you can get to know who they are. They are all very dedicated individuals who have stepped up because they believe in ensuring our future at Temple Shalom.

While school is out and it is a little quieter, there are still several events to attend at Temple Shalom. Summer camp is rolling at the Preschool and the Philharmonic and Israeli Scouts will be here in June.

I look forward to meeting new people and getting reacquainted with those I have not seen in awhile.

Dr. Anna Salomon, RJE Director of Congregational Education Year End Highlights This school year ushered in several changes in the Religious School. Over the summer, we began work to implement a brand new curriculum for both Hebrew and Judaics. Our goal was to incorporate feedback received from parents and students, as well as ensure a vibrant and dynamic Religious School experience for all of our students. A few of our holiday highlights include Sukkot, Chanukah, Purim, and Passover. For Sukkot, we held our first ever Sukkot Food Truck Rodeo, bringing three delicious food trucks here for our dining pleasure. For Chanukah, we had a schoolwide mitzvah project called “Bedtime Bundles.” Each class donated items that children would need for bedtime – pillows, pajamas, slippers, toothbrushes, hairbrushes, stuffed animals, story books, and more. These bundles were decorated by students and donated to Youth Haven (local youth shelter). Our school collected enough for 17 bundles! We ended our day with a dance party and latkes/sufganiyot (jelly donuts).

We also began a new FAMILY SHABBAT EXPERIENCE, bringing families together for dinner with Shabbat blessings, and a studentled sanctuary experience. This new format and earlier time proved to be a hit with our families. Each of the four events had 80+ people in attendance and a good time was had by all!

One significant change we implemented this year was the siddur (prayerbook) presentation moved to 3rd grade. Students are now receiving their prayerbooks earlier, and without transliteration, to help strengthen their experience with prayer and Hebrew. Families decorated special covers for the prayerbooks as a surprise for the students. Our students are now proudly learning to use their own siddur!

Looking forward to next year, we are planning to offer two choices for Hebrew class times – Wednesdays (4:45-6 PM) and Sundays (11:30-1:00 PM). This change will allow for greater participation among our families and meets a pressing need. Religious School will remain on Sunday mornings, with a slight time change to 9-11 AM. Students in 8th-10th grade will experience a revitalized post b’nai mitzvah program, Journey. In this program they will have new travel options, Shabbaton retreats, and the opportunity to pursue their own interests as part of our Confirmation program.

The Religious School would like to give a huge thank you to Sisterhood, Men’s Club, and the Jewish Federation for all of the support each provides. We simply couldn’t do it without you!

ADULT EDUCATION

Our adult education program was jam packed this year with wonderful learning opportunities for all. We are proud to be the exclusive provider for the Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning here in Naples. Our first two classes, Jews in America and Jewish Humor, brought a combined total of 35 learners together for ten weeks of learning. We also held our first “Taste of Melton” session, offering 32 adults the opportunity to try a Melton lesson and see what it’s all about. Our Scholar in Residence, Dr. Daniel C. Matt, created a weekend full of incredible learning and discussion about the Zohar. In partnership with Senior For’Em, Ellaine Rosen offered a three part lecture on art. Throughout the year we also welcomed a multitude of guest speakers, including Edwin Black and Dr. Amy-Jill Levine.

Looking forward to next year, we will be offering new Melton courses, a new complement of guest speakers, and engaging opportunities for adult learning.

Preschool News Seyla Cohen, Preschool Director

On June 6th fabulous summer fun officially begins at both Camp Shalom and Camp Einstein. Camp Shalom is a fun-filled 7 week summer camp program for children ages two through five, and Camp Einstein is an outstanding academic camp for children five through eight years old. Both programs have been developed with children’s needs and interests in mind, offering a welcoming place for little ones to come and enjoy the hot Naples summer. There’s something to peak everyone’s interest.

Returning campers look forward to exciting experiences and new campers are surprised by the treat in store for them. Each camp offers a seven week program with a new theme each week.

Once again, thanks to the Jewish Federation of Collier County, we will have a visit from the Israeli Scouts on June 24th.

Last year the campers were so excited to mingle and learn from these talented boys and girls. It will be a real treat for Camp Shalom and Camp Einstein to see the Scouts in action!

Along with an amazing summer camp, preparations for the 2016-2017 school year are being made. We are proud to say that we are opening a fourth Lions class this year. The demand for our outstanding preschool is sensational! We have waiting lists on some of our classes already!

Sisterhood News

Sisterhood President

Sisterhood has had a very busy and productive year! As we come to the end of this season, I thought I’d share with you many of the good things that Sisterhood, with your support and assistance, has accomplished in the past twelve months.

We’ve had several interesting and entertaining monthly meetings where we discussed, among other things, Jewish Genealogy, and little known places of interest in Florida. We also learned about our auras from an acclaimed medium and life coach, and heard local authors read from their own works. We hosted the cross-organization Chanukah tea for all Jewish women’s organizations in Collier County. We enjoyed a night out tasting Kosher wines, and we all got home safely. Thank you to all who contributed their time and talents to help us learn, grow, and come together for these programs.

During the past year, because of your support, Sisterhood has been able to contribute $15,000 to Temple Shalom’s Religious School to help with operating costs and to provide scholarships to those in need. We donated $750 to support Mitzvah Day, $2,500 (with another $2,500 being paid in July) to help landscape the Temple’s grounds and create the beautiful Tribute Garden outside our Social Hall. Sisterhood donated $1,530 to Temple to completely under-write the purchase of a new washer and dryer, and we were a $1,500 sponsor of the Temple’s “Dream On” gala. Sisterhood contributed $1,666 to enable live streaming from the Temple sanctuary, so that those who cannot come to Temple can still participate in and enjoy services and events that take place there. We have also committed to provide $1,500 to help defray the cost of installing a hearing loop in the sanctuary, which will make it more accommodating for the hearing impaired.

On top of all that, Sisterhood, as always, runs the Judaica shop, and provides a delicious Oneg every single Friday night that there are services at Temple, in order to make sure that our members and guests feel welcome and have a great reason to stay and talk to each other and build our community. We also prepared special “sponsored” Onegs for Bar and Bat Mitzvah celebrations, baby namings, anniversaries, and other Temple celebrations. None of this would be possible without your help and support, and I thank you all for being part of a strong and active Sisterhood which we can all be very proud of.

In recognition of the fact that Sisterhood’s work is the product of all of us — not just our outstanding board members, but of all of you, Sisterhood’s supporters and volunteers, each year Sisterhood gives an award to a “Volunteer of the Year” to show how important each of us is, and how one person can help make a difference to Sisterhood and to Temple. At our recent May meeting, I was proud to present Sisterhood’s Volunteer of the Year award to Janet Solot, who has consistently made helping Sisterhood a priority, and who continues our volunteer tradition of supporting and helping the Temple and Sisterhood even when we are busy with the many other things each of us has going on in our lives.

Sisterhood’s Woman of Valor award was bestowed upon a woman who has devoted a large part of her time and talent to Sisterhood, and who has helped lead Sisterhood, shape its direction, and achieve its goals. Also at our May meeting, I was privileged to present the Woman of Valor award to Karen Cohn, who has unfailingly given of her time and energy to help keep the Judaica shop running, assist in preparing our Onegs, and, as Vice President for Programming, plan all the wonderful luncheons and gatherings we have had over the past two years.

Karen always says yes when Sisterhood asks, and she is a true Aishet Chayil, a Woman of Valor. Both Janet and Karen have my gratitude and admiration for all they have done for Sisterhood.

Our new Board Members were installed at our May meeting! Many thanks to Helen Weinfeld for the lovely installation program she developed.

Thank you to all who have helped make this a wonderful year for Sisterhood.

The Israel Scouts Friendship Caravan is made up of five girls, five boys and two Caravan leaders from all over Israel. In order to be in the Caravan, these teenagers (16 and 17 years old) went through a highly competitive selection process and were chosen based on their maturity, fluency in English, and performance skills.

Scouting is big in Israel, with over 60,000 members. Those chosen to participate here are selected for their ability to best represent the State of Israel. As Israeli delegates, these teens have a love for Israel and a desire to share that with North Americans.

The Scouts spend the 10 weeks of summer performing in synagogues and churches, schools and summer camps, even nursing homes – wherever people want to share their love for Israel.

Local families needed to host the Israel Scouts The hosting experience is often the most exciting and meaningful part of the Israel Scout Caravan’s visit. Community members are responsible for hosting the twelve Caravan members. The hosting relationship goes far beyond providing food and a bed – the host families become true surrogate families during their stay. Families love bringing the Caravan into their homes, getting to know the teens and learning more about Israel. It’s a valuable and unforgettable experience. This year, responsibilities include: meals and sleeping arrangements on Wednesday and Thursday nights, June 22-23 and transportation to/ from the events on both days. If you have youngsters or teens at home, this would be a real treat for them. Tikkun Olam Council - Social Action & Social Justice at Temple Shalom

Together…We Can Repair the World Get Involved This Summer

During the past several months the Tikkun Olam Council (TOC) has been seeking worthy initiatives that might generate support from the congregation. It has been a slower process than we had hoped for in terms of attracting committee members, project ideas and, most of all, finding members who are interested in becoming involved in social action.

We have initiated one new Temple project, namely working with the Harry Chapin Food Bank. Several Temple Shalom members have already volunteered multiple times at either the warehouse in Naples or at the mobile food pantry which brings the food to various locations in Collier County. We intend to encourage Temple Shalom members to join us the fourth Friday of each month to pack food bundles at the Harry Chapin warehouse in Naples. The session lasts three hours, from 12:00-3:00 PM. What a great way to start Shabbat! Please join us and let us know that you are willing to volunteer. Send an email to Stan Farb at stan4mignon@earthlink.net or Ken Goldstein at kengoldstein@mac.com. We will then contact you and help you obtain and fill out the application required to serve as a volunteer so that you can join us as we make a difference here in Collier County.

To develop new initiatives as well as support and grow existing activities, we feel we need to gain a better understanding of what social action activities our members are currently involved in and supporting. If we are informed of those, perhaps some of them might be activities in which other of our Members would like to involve themselves as volunteers.

To help us to understand what our Members are interested in and/or are already doing in the social action/social justice arena, we would greatly appreciate your response by email or phone to the following questions will be invaluable. We will keep responses confidential if you wish us to: • Are you currently a volunteer outside of Temple Shalom, and if so, for what organizations?

• Are you in Naples all year or just for the winter season?

• If the TOC can find a need for volunteers in an organization of interest to you, would you like to serve as a volunteer?

The TOC will continue to explore other initiatives and projects such as working with the Immokalee farm workers or with the Jewish Federation and Community Services as well as any others brought to our attention by the Temple membership.

We can already report that one of the members of the Tikkun Olam Council joined a group of lay leaders in May to see firsthand a model for human rights in our food system by meeting with the Coalition of Farm Workers (CIW) in Immokalee.

The purpose was to learn about the Fair Food Program and find ways to make an impact with the Campaign for Fair Food. Also discussed were Jewish texts and values that inform our commitment to ending forced labor and other forms of worker exploitation.

Finally, there was some practical knowledge of how we can ensure that the producers of the food we eat support the human dignity of their workers. All of this will be discussed over the next few months to see whether there is an opportunity for Temple Shalom to join in this effort.

The TOC is committed to growing and strengthening the values of tikkun olam. We continue look for new initiatives and will continue to encourage participation in social action events and activities.

A planned gift allows you to hold on to your money and other assets for now, just to be sure you can meet your family’s future financial needs. Importantly, it also allows you to leave a legacy to benefit the Temple far into the future. A planned gift can set a wonderful example for your children and grandchildren to show how much you care about the future of Temple Shalom and providing for it to maintain a lasting role in your family’s and community’s future.

It can be as simple as a statement in your Will or Revocable Trust that “I give the sum of $xxx to Temple Shalom to be used for general charitable purposes” or “I give xx% of my estate to the Temple Shalom Endowment Fund.”

• Another common gift is of retirement plan assets, such as a 401k, 403b, IRA or other plan. Such a gift is usually made by designating the Temple as a beneficiary on a form provided by the plan, your employer or investment advisor. The Temple itself or the Temple Endowment Fund may be designated as the direct beneficiary of all or a portion of your retirement plan assets.

• A gift of a paid-up life insurance policy that is no longer needed by your children or other beneficiaries is a wonderful way to make a gift to the Temple without out-of-pocket costs. You can also purchase a new policy naming the Temple as beneficiary.

Any type of gift that can be given now may also be made to take effect in the future, when it is no longer needed for current or family expenses. Such gifts include cash, securities, real estate, personal property, retirement plan assets and life insurance. Future articles will talk about these and other types of planned gifts.

A planned gift may establish your own named fund, or name a facility, sacred place or program (if it complies with the Temple’s Named Gift Policies and Procedures) or be dedicated to a specific purpose. Your participation in Temple Shalom’s Endowment Fund can be a truly meaningful way to express your faith in our future. Contributions to Temple Shalom funds are wonderful ways to show your appreciation of family and friends, to celebrate happy occasions and to honor the memories of loved ones. We suggest a minimum donation of chai ($18.00). With a minimum donation of chai, a notice of your gift will be sent to the honoree and mention will be published monthly in The Voice.

Operations

General Fund: Donations used for operating expenses.

Tree of Life: Each ‘Rock’ and ‘Star of David’ is a donation of $540.00; each ‘Leaf ’ is $240.00. The contribution must be received in its entirety before engraving is ordered.

Burn The Mortgage Fund: Established by Gerry and Pearl Sugarman to reduce payment of any existing mortgage.

Worship

Memorial Fund: Donations made in honor of a loved one who has passed.

William Freschel Kiddush Fund: All donations help provide Kiddush Lunch each Saturday following worship services.

A $150 donation is considered to be a sponsorship to honor a special someone or occasion.

Flower Fund: Provides Bimah flowers each Shabbat. A $150.00 donation is considered to be a sponsorship in memory or in honor of a special someone or occasion.

Mitzvah Baskets Fund: A $100.00 donation will purchase several hundred dollars of food for JFCS. Dr. Philip & Shirley Gilbert Music Fund: Donations are used for the enhancement of music at Temple Shalom.

Endowment

Religious School Fund: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for Jewish learning in both Sunday and Hebrew Schools.

Endowment Fund: Donations help to secure the future, enrich the programs and provide for emergency needs of the congregation.

Religious School Enrichment Fund: Donations augment the Religious School budget to enrich the education of our children.

Scholar In Residence Endowment Fund: Supports the endowment established by Shirley and Henry Kraus. This fund enables Temple Shalom to bring visiting scholars to the Temple as an educational benefit to the membership.

Polster Religious School Scholarship Fund: To supplement Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Ben Calmenson Fund: Donations will be used to create sponsorships to send children to attend Camp Coleman.

Rabbi Abraham Shusterman Children's Center Memorial Fund: To support our Religious School and Preschool.

Sisterhood Religious School Scholarship Fund: To provide Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Joseph S. Weinfeld Faculty Development Fund: Donations support both curriculum and teaching skill enrichment activities for Sunday and Hebrew School teachers.

The Low Family Endowment Fund: To secure the future of Temple Shalom and Reform Judaism in Southwest Florida.

The Herbert & Ruth Abramson Fund: To supplement the general operating fund and to provide enrichment for Temple functions.

The Janet & Howard Solot Endowment Fund: For general charitable uses and purposes.

Clergy/Leadership

Rabbi Miller’s Discretionary Fund: For tzedakah, charitable purposes,and general enhancement of the Rabbi's work.

Cantor Azu's Discretionary Fund: For tzedakah, charitable purposes and general enhancement of the Cantor's work.

Youth Activities Fund: Donations provide financial support for children of our congregation to attend Camp Coleman, to take part in regional/national youth conventions, and to experience a summer in Israel.

Leadership Fund: Donations are used for the enhancement and enrichment of leadership programs at Temple Shalom.

Preschool

Rabbi James & Jane Perman Library: Books, magazine subscriptions and supplies are purchased.

Preschool Fund: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for the Preschool.

Social Action

Preschool Enrichment Fund: The enhancement of curriculum, educational programs and experiences.

David and Lillian Thalenfeld Fund for Social Justice: Provides support for Temple participation in social justice events and activities.

Arby Lipman Children's Library: For the purchase of children and adolescent books and magazine subscriptions, and supplies.

Jack and Charlotte Ward Family Children's Music Shelf: Audio and video musical tapes for children.

Above & Beyond I/We Care **Oneg Shabbat:
