Temple Shalom of Naples is an inclusive Reform Jewish congregation where all individuals are equal partners in making our world whole and holy. We are One Family, believing in the sacredness of relationships, fostering connections –one to another, Temple, Israel, Torah and God. We are living Jewish values and nurturing future generations.

We read in Torah that God instructs Moses to bring 70 leaders of the Israelites with him to the top of Mount Sinai. With exactly 12 tribes, Moses does the math and realizes that he has a problem. There is no way for him to equitably distribute the chosen leaders of the tribes. So, he places 72 lots into a container and asks six leaders from each tribe to draw lots. Two draw the short straw (literally) and are left behind, Eldad and Medad, while Moses and the others go up the holy mountain.
While Moses is on the mountain, word reaches him that Eldad and Medad have started to prophesize and lead in the absence of Moses and the others. His assistant, Joshua, suggests that Moses should punish Eldad and Medad for acting in this way. Moses responds with a different opinion, noting how wonderful it was to hear that these two were embracing the burden of leadership and rising to the challenge in his absence. Moses understood a lesson that resonates still today. Leadership is not a privilege, a matter of choosing lots or being given honors, but rather a responsibility and obligation to the greater community.
In the best of times, synagogue leadership requires individuals willing to navigate the complex elements of representing the best interests of their fellow members, while also managing the operations and staff of the organization. I have been blessed in my 19 years of the rabbinate to work alongside many talented and passionate leaders who recognized those challenges and gave of themselves for the betterment of their Temple community. These last two years, I witnessed leaders who did something more extraordinary than any who have come before them.
The COVID-19 pandemic posed an existential threat to all non-profits, especially those that relied upon inperson engagement. We overcome this challenge due in large part to the tremendous partnership between our lay leaders, clergy and staff. Our lay leaders made it possible for us as a congregation to pivot rapidly –embracing a virtual model, addressing financial concerns, and adapting to changing conditions in ways that kept us vibrant and thriving as a congregation. They attended a multitude of additional meetings, freely giving their time, talents and resources so that our One Family would be where it is today.
As our board transitions, I want to acknowledge these great sacrifices, and especially noting the leadership of our Temple President, Daryl Sissman. Daryl took on her role as COVID-19 began, with a budget built in preCOVID times, and facing unprecedented challenges. Her steady hand, openness to creativity, readiness to engage others, and willingness to adapt were vital to our success and our leadership team.
I am truly grateful to Daryl, and all of our Board members for their gifts to our Congregation. May we all rise together to build on what they have created, leading us into the future. From the celebration of Temple Shalom’s first 60 years, to an even brighter next 60 that will follow. May we all go from strength to strength and blessing to blessing.
As I write this month’s voice, my little girl has just turned 9 weeks old! I can’t believe how quickly time flew by. It’s been an incredibly rewarding few months bonding with Mila and getting to know her.
As I transition back to Temple Shalom, I can’t help but be grateful to all those who helped while I was away on leave. A huge thank you to Rabbi Boxman and Rabbi Miller, Dr. Michele Pelletiere, Keren Alpert and Cantor Donna Goldstein.
Steve and I look forward to raising Mila in this wonderful community and we look forward to introducing you to her soon!
What a wonderful year we had in YESh! We were sorry to say goodbye for the summer at the end of May. Our students enjoyed a year filled with so much fun that they didn’t even realize how much they were learning. I want to thank our teachers, madrichim (teacher assistants) and volunteers for providing an outstanding experience for every one of our students. I would also like to thank the Temple Shalom Sisterhood for the very generous donation they make annually to support our program. Both the Mens Club and Sisterhood are committed partners of our Youth Engagement program and are always happy to help when called upon. We are grateful for everything you do for us and we look forward to deepening our partnership in educating the next generation of committed Jews. A giant thanks goes to my assistant, Mary Flores, my right hand woman. Mary not only takes care of all the logistics needed to run our program, but she does so with a warm smile on her face, and an endless amounts of patience. Mary- you are just wonderful and I am thankful to call you my partner and friend.
Unless you have children in our YESh program, you may not know much of what goes on, and what we offer. I want to take this opportunity to share some highlights of our program and shed light on the ways in which we are actively building a vibrant Jewish community for children and young families. YESh meets on Sunday mornings and incorporates both Judaics studies and Hebrew language education. Students in Kindergarten through 7th grade participate in grade specific Judaics classes focused on Jewish traditions, rituals and holidays. In addition to grade-level Judaics, students also choose electives each week, based on their interests. Electives include crafts, yoga, Tikkun Olam, Hebrew Olympics, Israeli dance, cooking, and guitar, and choir. Students in 3rd through 6th grade are also invited to attend Hebrew classes following the Judaics portion of the morning in order to learn basic Hebrew reading skills in preparation for their B’nei Mitzvah.
Once students become bar/bat mitzvah, we invite them to continue their journey into Judaism by joining our Confirmation Program. Once a month, 8th-10th graders who want to be confirmed come together for classes led by Rabbi Miller and Cantor Azu. They explore topics such as ethics, pop culture and interreligious dialogue.
In addition to confirmation, 8th-12th grade students are also invited to serve as role models for the younger students, while deepening their ties to Judaism and Temple Shalom as Madrichim. Each Sunday during YESh, these students assist the teachers and support the younger students by sharing their own passions and knowledge, in a healthy and positive learning environment. The program has been wildly popular with our congregation’s teens; there were a record number of madrichim participated this year, and we look forward to welcoming even more next year.
Our youth engagement programs at Temple Shalom are essential for building Jewish community for the youngest among us as well as their families. In keeping with the One Family mission, our main goal for YESh is to provide a space in which Jewish children can create meaningful relationships with one another, our Temple, and with Judaism. We are proud to provide such a rich program and are grateful for all of the support we are given from the congregation, the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples, and our Naples community.
Wishing everyone a happy and safe summer!
To the Sisterhood for their generous donation of $15,000 in support of YESh.
Jeanette Fischer – Communications Director jfischer@naplestemple.org Ext. 218
Having worked here for 8 years, Jeanette is an invaluable source of historical memory. She is also the Master of the Calendar and the creative force behind the Voice, the Kol Shalom (weekly email), Sad News emails and other congregational communications. She oversees the Temple’s mailings and invitations, including L’Shalom, Above & Beyond, our fundraiser and more. Nothing happens at Temple without Jeanette’s involvement in some way, shape or form. Jeanette and her husband Glenn have four adult children. Originally from northern NJ, they moved to Naples 10 years ago. They enjoy spending time with family and friends, trying all the different restaurants Naples has to offer, playing scrabble and backgammon and going to Everblades games.
Megan Black – Program and Engagement Director mblack@naplestemple.org Ext. 216
You may know Megan from her time as the Audio/Visual Technician in the Sanctuary. We are thrilled to welcome her back to our staff in her new role. Megan brings five and a half years of experience as a Program Director at Naples UCC to the job and is finding all sorts of new ways to further build and strengthen our community. Originally from the Washington, D.C. metro area, Megan lived in Pittsburgh for ten years, until 2015, when she and her bearded collie, Fergus, moved to Naples. She works two days a week in Naples and spends the rest of her time working remotely from St Petersburg, FL. Megan adores anything that will get her outside in the Florida sunshine- kayaking, cycling, or simply a picnic blanket, a good book, and a shady tree. We are lucky to have someone with her event planning skills on our staff!
Esther Garfield – Marketing Director egarfield@naplestemple.org Ext. 211
Esther has a real eye for design that shines through on our website, social media, the Lobby and Sanctuary screens and many of our printed materials. If you haven’t “liked” Temple Shalom on Facebook or followed us on Instagram, you are missing out! Esther honed her visual organizational skills over the years on screens via video production and online through the blogging and social media sphere. She also enjoys creating order in physical spaces with home organization projects. She and her husband Josh have lived in south Florida for twenty years after growing up in Cleveland and St. Louis. They have two teenage boys and enjoy spending time with their family and travelling.
lbautista@naplestemple.org Ext. 201
Leslie is our Receptionist. She comes to us from Moorings Park, where she was the Activities Assistant for two years. Originally from Trujillo, Honduras, she graduated from Ave Maria University and has lived in Naples for four years. She likes to cook traditional Honduran food, go to the beach and spend time with her husband, Elias and son, Manuel, who is in fifth grade at Calusa Park Elementary School. She has only been here a short time, but we can’t imagine how we managed without her already! Stop by the Front Office window next time you are at Temple and say hola!
Anne Maner
amaner@naplestemple.org Ext. 327
Our new Clergy Assistant, Anne Maner, lives in her home state of Savannah Georgia! She has held positions as a Clergy Assistant for Temple Kol Ami in Tucson, Arizona, and as an executive director of three synagogues over her 17-year career in Jewish communal life. She will continue to live in GA and work for us remotely. Her greatest love is her family: two daughters, a son-in-law serving in the US Air Force, a 13 year old granddaughter and an 8 year old grandson. Anne loves music, cooking, theater and travel, as well as all things flamingo! Anne is looking forward to getting to know the members of Temple Shalom by phone and over Zoom!
The normal yearly cycle for Congregations runs from July 1 to June, 30, meaning that we are starting a new fiscal year this month. While it may be more appropriate to look forward, I would be remiss not to look back and recognize how fortunate I am to step into this position at this time in our Temple’s history.
The absolutely superlative job that Daryl Sissman accomplished during the exceedingly difficult environment over the recent past cannot be overestimated. She set a high bar of how things should be done by any nonprofit’s President. I have asked Daryl to maintain a leadership presence in a number of capacities and she has graciously consented.
I am sure you all feel that if we were in a sports league, our professional staff would be number one on an All-American Team. Rabbi Miller has helped put Temple Shalom on the map by establishing an environment that brings out the best in people and by “being there” for our members. Thanks in no small part to our exemplary clergy, Temple Shalom is now the second largest Reform synagogue on the west coast of Florida. Rabbi Boxman is a treasure and has grown our entire educational program across the age spectrum. Cantor Azu, who has personally increased the Jewish population of the Naples area (with Steve’s help!), has returned from maternity leave to add beauty and majesty to our services and contribute to our clergy team’s endeavors.
Many synagogues are lucky if their numbers remain stable; more and more of them are simply failing to survive because of administrative failures. They lose control. We have a safeguard. Her name is Deborah Fidel. We are all aware of the problems surrounding the available labor force. The responsibility for maintaining administrative functions spanning the buffet of areas from personnel, membership, fundraising, communications, security, payroll and budget, to - you name it - rest on her desk. She too is number one.
Our Senior Staff could not work their magic without the rest of the team - the multitalented Jeanette Fischer, Leslie Bautista, Anne Maner, Esther Garfield and Megan Black, Julie Fischer, Mary Flores and Paulette Matute - Todah Rabah. Victor Lucas, Pedro Cruz and Rick Holsbeke are also treasures. We could not function without their contributions to keeping our facility clean and safe.
With our very own Dream Team working on board, we should look forward with optimism to the changes we see on the horizon - continued growth in Naples and the upcoming arrival of our new neighbor, the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples. We are also fortunate to have a spectacular group of lay leaders on the Board. The current Board of Trustees, like last year’s, is loaded with talent and will enact policies and continue to secure YOUR Temple’s future.
With this staff and Board I look forward to this new cycle - - We are ready! If you have left Naples, please travel home and back safely. YOUR TEMPLE FAMILY MISSES YOU. If you are still here…READ YOUR EMAIL!!
Leia and David Kotick recently moved to Naples from Astoria, Queens, NY this past April. They are looking forward to joining the Temple community and meeting new people and making new friends.
Jeffrey and Barbara enjoy canasta, bridge, golf, lectures at Naples Counsel on World Affairs, and socializing with friends. They are interested in expanding their education (world affairs, Israel’s position in world affairs), antisemitism, Jewish history, etc. They look forward to becoming involved with Temple Shalom. Barbara has been an educator in various capacities for 35 years. Dr. Jeffrey Steckler currently volunteers as an orthopedist at Neighborhood Health Clinic, Naples.
Judi and Ken Rotskoff look forward to joining the Temple Shalom congregational family. They are natives of St. Louis, Missouri and recently moved to Naples full time this year. They have been married for 55 years and were high school sweethearts. Ken and Judi have two children, Lori and Brian. Lori is married to Michael Canter and they have two children, Benjamin and Eli. Benjamin is a graduate student at Boston University in occupational therapy. Elijah is a junior at Boston University in the BU film studies program. Their son, Brian, is an allergist and practices and lives in Chicago. Ken was an oral maxillofacial cosmetic surgeon and practiced for 40 years in St. Louis. He graduated from Washington University School of Dentistry and Washington University School of Medicine. Judi has a degree in deaf education from Central Institute of the Deaf, and later became a certified public accountant. They enjoy playing golf, traveling, and spending time with their family.
Tammy and Brian Katz recently relocated to Estero, from Columbus Ohio. They have an adult son Michael, who remains in Columbus. Brian grew up in Steubenville Ohio and is the Finance Director for Hexion Specialty Chemicals. Tammy grew up in Bexley Ohio and recently retired from Katz Marketing Solutions and teaching at the Ohio State University. Both are proud Buckeyes. Brian served on the Hillel board and was a long time chapter advisor at Sigma Alpha Mu. Tammy served on the Jewish Community Center and Columbus Jewish Federation boards. Brian is an avid woodworker, tennis player, and bowler. Tammy enjoys tennis, golf, pickleball, mahjong and needlepointing. They both look forward to being active members of the community.

The Shrine of the Book was built as a repository for the first seven scrolls discovered at Qumran in 1947. The unique white dome embodies the lids of the jars in which the first scrolls were found.
This symbolic building, a kind of sanctuary intended to express profound spiritual meaning, is considered an international landmark of modern architecture. Designed by American Jewish architects Armand P. Bartos and Frederic J. Kiesler, it was dedicated in an impressive ceremony on April 20, 1965. Its location next to official institutions of the State of Israel—the Knesset (Israeli Parliament), key government offices, and the Jewish National and University Library—is appropriate considering the degree of national importance that has been accorded the ancient texts and the building that preserves them.
The contrast between the white dome and the black wall alongside it alludes to the tension evident in the scrolls between the spiritual world of the “Sons of Light” (as the Judean Desert sectarians called themselves) and the “Sons of Darkness” (the sect’s enemies). The corridor leading into the Shrine resembles a cave, recalling the site where the ancient manuscripts were discovered.
Providing a vivid context for the Shrine of the Book and the Dead Sea Scrolls and for many contemporaneous archaeological artifacts displayed throughout the Museum, the model illustrates one of the most formative periods in the history of the Jewish people and bears a deep connection to the symbols of modern statehood that surround the Museum campus.

Believe it or not, the Temple staff are not superheroes! We could use an assist in the office from time to time. If you are willing to lend a hand with photocopying, preparing mailings and similar clerical tasks, sometimes with a small group of willing volunteers who want to keep their hands busy, let us know.
Do you have financial know-how? Are you a money-maven? The Finance Committee prepares the annual operating budget for the Congregation and recommends appropriate financial policies and procedures to the Board. The Investment Committee directs the investment of Temple funds.
Fundraising provides important additional resources that help Temple extend membership and religious education to everyone, regardless of their ability to contribute, and to support programs. Fundraising events are also wonderful social opportunities for our members to work together, play together and support Temple together. Would you like to help us plan our annual fundraising event? Could you help us solicit gifts to the Endowment Fund or Planned Giving Program?
Leaders in the Temple community help the Board of Trustees with Strategic Planning and review and maintain the Bylaws of Temple Shalom.
Help direct the future of Temple Shalom by developing and nominating future community leaders to the Board of Trustees.
There are many opportunities for our members to engage in meaningful Jewish learning. Our clergy work with the Adult Education Committee to provide interesting and challenging educational opportunities throughout the year on relevant and interesting Jewish topics for the Congregation and community, in order to increase the knowledge of our Jewish heritage, culture, texts, beliefs and practices. This committee plans and carries out the annual Scholar-in-Residence Program.
The YESh Committee works in partnership with Rabbi Boxman to provide educational, fun and engaging Jewish experiences for children, teens and families. New ideas are always welcome!
Helping others is a Jewish value and we perform this mitzvah to benefit members of our local community and the world beyond. Whether taking action to help a single individual or contributing to a larger initiative, our work makes the world a better place, and each act of kindness, no matter how small, helps build a better world. We plan and coordinate Mitzvah Day and sponsor regular social action and educational programs throughout the year.
Temple Shalom is a spiritual and sacred congregation. We develop the policies which shape the ritual observance within our congregation for approval by the Board.
Are you an architect? Do you have a background in construction? Facilities management? If so, the Building & Grounds Committee could use your help! This committee oversees capital improvements and repairs of the Temple grounds and develops long-term goals for renovation and preservation of facilities.
This committee is consists of members with a background in interior design to help keep Temple Shalom a beautiful, safe place to worship, learn and socialize.
The Security Committee works with the Executive Director to provide a safe, secure and welcoming environment for all staff, members, students and visitors to Temple Shalom. The committee reviews and evaluates policies, practices and equipment that relate to the safety of our facility and the people on our property. Volunteers have a background in law enforcement, military and security systems.
Help spread the word about our vibrant congregation! The Membership Committee promotes activities to increase and retain the membership of the Congregation. Committee members call prospective members to provide information about the Temple, provide a warm welcome to our community’s newest members and help them find their place within the Temple community through new member wine and cheese receptions, Shabbat Dinners, and a gift to mark their formal association with the synagogue.
The Temple Shalom Choir performs on High Holy Days and during several Friday evening servcies throughout the year. The choir is open to all members with a love for music.
Do you play a musical instrument? Share your talents with the congregation by playing in our band! The Temple Shalom Band plays at Soulful Shabbat services throughout the year.
This committee responds to families and individuals at times of joy and celebration as well as difficult times such as illness or death. We send handwritten cards of condolence and celebration for “big” birthdays and anniversaries and we also keep in touch with members who may be unable to attend services or are alone and might appreciate a phone call periodically.
Put a smile on someone’s face! The members of this committee prepare and deliver home cooked meals, challah or baked goods to Temple members who are ill and alone, mourning a loss or welcoming a new baby. This is a great mitzvah opportunity for children to do with their parents and/or grandparents.
A great way to meet people and perform a mitzvah at the same time! Temple Shalom’s friendly culture is exemplified by the reception people receive when they enter our building. This committee proudly serves our congregational family on Shabbat evenings and holidays by greeting congregants and guests, checking tickets on the High Holy Days, sharing important information about various programs and services in the building. This mitzvah will be the highlight of your week!
The committee will work with Temple clergy and staff to plan a new and exciting Sukkot Celebration, a Friday night Hanukkah party and the Temple Shalom Community Seder.
Ushers enhance High Holy Day services by greeting worshippers, taking tickets, providing large-print books to those who need them, help people find seats and assist service participants ascend and descend the Locketz Bima to keep services running smoothly. They are usually the first people to greet incoming congregants and set the tone for a positive experience.
The mitzvah of nichum aveilim, of comforting mourners, is considered in the Talmud to be one way for humans to fulfill the principle of “walking in God’s ways.” One of the core roles of One Family is to make sure that at times of loss, mourners are provided with our communal support and nechama, comfort. We help the clergy with shiva minyan coordination.
We were very pleased to finish our Sisterhood year on a very positive note and look forward to the coming year with great enthusiasm. Come join the fun and make new friends. We look forward to meeting you. If you have not yet joined Sisterhood, Fran St. Fleur, VP of Membership, will be happy to answer your questions you may have.
The Sisterhood Board has been busy planning for the coming year. We will have a Fall Fashion Show in November, a Mah Jongg Tournament in January and a Canasta Tournament in April. We also plan luncheons with a speaker several times during the year. Come and join us in planning and helping out at these events. We are always open to new ideas. Contact Judy Ciorciari, VP of Programming, at jciorcia99@yahoo.com or Lynn Prosten, VP of Fundraising at abbymont20@aol.com if you’d like to volunteer to help.
If you like to bake, our Friday evening onegs provide an opportunity to share some delicious cakes and cookies. Baked (or store bought) goods can be dropped off in the Temple kitchen. Please don’t forget to include a note so we know who to thank.
If you enjoy a good book, why not join the Sisterhood Book Bag? The Book Bag meets on the third Thursday of each month at 1:30pm and is chaired by Nancy Suslov. In June, August and September they will meet on Zoom. Starting in October they will meet at Temple Shalom in the Perman Library. The June 16 selection is “Send for Me” by Thrity Umigar. Lynn Brown is the facilitator. Contact Nancy at nisuslov@gmail.com for more information and the Zoom link.
If you have any questions about Sisterhood or any of our programs or events, please contact me at Barbdruckman@gmail.com.
Enjoy the summer! See you in the fall.

The mission of the Men’s Club is to work to strengthen Temple Shalom and the Jewish Community, foster activities for the men of our congregation, aid the needy within the SW Florida community and communities around the world and provide resources for YESh (formerly known as Religious School) as well as our preschool.
In order to continue supporting our work, we ask that you renew your membership or, if you’ve never been part of the Men’s Club before, consider joining us for the first time. Because of the pandemic we have been unable to launch major fundraising drives, so this year your membership in the Men’s Club carries special importance. If you need a copy of the membership form, please visit the Men’s Club page under Connect on the Temple Shalom website.
There is a lot that needs to be done and we are proud of how your Men’s Club has responded to these needs. In addition to joining, please think about taking a leadership role as well as providing ideas and suggestions for how we can expand our activities. I can be reached at 702-765-4170 (landline) or by e-mail at ryasbin@alumni.psu.edu.
Have a great summer!

For many generations, Jews have made it a custom to remember their loved ones and sanctify their joyous events with a charitable donation. At Temple Shalom, there are several ways for us to remember or honor a loved one and give thanks for milestone events in our lives. Please consider a yahrzeit plaque, Tribute Garden paver, leaf on the Tree of Life, or dedicating a Torah portion in the Illustrated Torah as a permanent remembrance. Your generosity will contribute to the future of Temple Shalom.
Scan the QR codes below with the camera on your cellphone to go directly to an order form, or call the Temple Shalom office for assistance.
Contributions to Temple Shalom funds are wonderful ways to show your appreciation of family and friends, to celebrate happy occasions and to honor the memories of loved ones. We suggest a minimum donation of chai ($18.00). With a minimum donation of chai, a notice of your gift will be sent to the honoree and mention will be published in The Voice. To make a donation, visit the donation page on the website at www.naplestemple.org, or call the Temple office at 239-455-3030.
