Adam Miller Be Mindful This Summer Believe it or not, summer is almost here. Bobby Harris, Director of URJ Camp Coleman, often says that the campers live eleven months for one. Meaning, that kids will spend their eleven months during the year looking forward to that one month of camp. As adults, we may not live eleven for one, but we do appreciate the blessing of summer. Summer feels especially welcome after a year where we saw increased growth in our community, more activities (and traffic!) than ever before, and a hurricane! The summer is our Shabbat from the rest of the year. Regular routines are interrupted for travel, family time, and different experiences. Some go up North, returning to visit family and friends in the cooler weather. Others will travel to different parts of the country or even the world. Many take time away from work. And there are those who prefer to stay put, making better use of time and resources here - eating in restaurants without making reservations, going to the beach and finding easy parking, driving down the road with nary a worry for traffic. Even as we look forward to summer with great joy, we know that it will pass by all too soon. June will quickly turn into July, July into August, and before we know it, the High Holy Days will be here. That fleeting sense of time only seems to accelerate each year. Is it possible for us to slow down time, to enjoy these days more, to find the blessings of summer? There are ways in which we can make this summer move “slower”, by engaging in mindful behavior and meaningful experiences. One should spend time with family, explore new adventures, and engage in acts that reflect your Jewish values. Whether traveling, volunteering, or visiting with others, create a routine that allows you to reflect, remember, and appreciate
Annual Meeting 2018 Many thanks to Dan Spintman, Chair of the Nominating Committee and the members of the Nominating Committee for their hard work in securing skilled candidates to serve on the Board of Trustees. what made the day or week meaningful. Too often we move from one experience to the next, without allowing ourselves to appreciate what we have done. This makes us feel like time is moving even faster, and also makes it more difficult to look back and recognize how much we have accomplished. Instead of falling into this mindless pattern, we should find ways to pause and reflect. For some, events and key moments are best captured through a journal or log. Others may wish to create their own routine. Perhaps finding a night each week when all those present at dinner share highlights from the week. Know that being mindful will not physically slow or reverse time, that can only happen in comic books or on the silver screen. But, mindfulness can make us more aware of our journey, and give us the perception that time is moving at a slower pace. Wherever your journeys may take you this summer, I pray that it is a summer full of laughter, joy, love, and blessing. I can’t wait to hear your stories. L’shalom, Rabbi Adam F. Miller

Donna Azu As I write this, I have been noticing a change in Naples. Car carriers are driving out of town, there is less traffic on the roads and many of our neighbors have started to leave for the summer. After such a joyous yet busy year at Temple Shalom, it’s also nice to have a little bit of quiet. This issue of The Voice has me thinking about summer and I can’t help but get excited about the season ahead! Summertime arriving soon also means summer Shabbats at Temple Shalom, and that is most certainly something to look forward to. Not only do the summer months give me an opportunity to take some time to rest and re-energize myself before season, it’s a great opportunity for me to plan all of the wonderful programs and activities taking place next year at the Temple. Summer services have a comfortable, more intimate atmosphere. Though many of the snow birds are gone, it’s a great opportunity for those who are here year round to connect to each other. And of course, what could be a greater celebration of God’s rest from creation than celebrating Shabbat surrounded by community and friends? In general, summertime is the perfect time to reconnect ourselves to the weekly cycle of Jewish life. Late sunsets and relaxed work schedules make the perfect opportunity for Shabbat dinners
with friends on outdoor furniture, or long, lingering Shabbat picnics and services on the beach. Rabbi Miller and I plan on leading several over the summer, taking advantage of warm late evening weather. It will be a great opportunity to welcome Shabbat surrounded by the beauty of nature. As summer approaches, perhaps it is worthwhile to take a moment and consider how to make Shabbat a regular part of our schedule. I hope to see you at Temple Shalom this summer, celebrating Shabbat and what will surely be a beautiful summer

PRESIDENT
Debra Antzis Daniel Spintman chaired the nominating committee which nominated our current officers and directors, and I am very grateful for the excellent team they put together. It’s not an easy task, and requires much thought, time, effort, and persuasive talents. Thank you, Dan, and committee members Nancy Brother, Michael Feldman, Ken Goldstein, Merrill Hassenfeld, Daryl Sissman and Nancy Wiadro. I hope the next two years prove that your efforts were worthwhile. ............................................................ I’m pleased to announce that Deborah Fidel will be starting as Executive Director of Temple Shalom on July 1st. Here is a short bio of the newest addition to our Temple Shalom team: Deborah Rosen Fidel has been serving the public sector and non-profit community of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for the last 24 years in both a volunteer and professional capacity. Deborah began her career as an attorney, but left the workforce for ten years to be a stay-athome mother to her three sons - Matthew(23), Noah(21) and Joshua(17). When Josh entered kindergarten and she was ready to rejoin the

Arthur has been a leader of the Jewish Genealogy Special Interest Group since 2013. He also serves as the leader of the Jewish Genealogy SIG of Lee and Charlotte Counties. Arthur conducts small workshops on topics such as GEDMatch, AncestryDNA and 23andMe. Visit www.thegscc.org for more information on Arthur’s lectures and workshops.
Deborah served as the Executive Director of the local chapter of the Zionist Organization of America, and the Pittsburgh affiliate of the American Jewish Committee. She was Executive Director at Temple Sinai, a large Reform temple, where she honed the wide array of skills that she will bring to Temple Shalom. Before coming to Naples, she worked for the Northern Israel Center for Arts and Technology as an organizational development, fundraising and management consultant. Deborah earned a B.A. in Near Eastern and Judaic Studies from Brandeis University, a J.D. from Boston University School of Law and an M.J.P.S. (Master’s of Jewish Professional Studies) from the Spertus Institute. When not working or spending time with family and friends, Deborah enjoys cycling, walking on the beach and listening to podcasts. She and her husband, Bob, are both looking forward to becoming part of the Temple Shalom family and living near her parents, Ellaine and Rick Rosen, who are very happy members of Temple Shalom themselves! Please join me in welcoming Deborah to the Temple Shalom family!
(HomeShabbatDinners) We are happy to announce that the Shabbat Dinner Train is back! Shabbat home dinners provide an opportunity to share Shabbat with other Temple members and families in a relaxed home environment. It’s a wonderful experience that enhances the One Family philosophy. How it works: • A host family invites two or more couples/singles to their home for Shabbat dinner • Invitees should include established and new members • After shared dinner where new bonds may be formed the guests are then asked to host a Shabbat dinner in their home • Hosts can choose any style of dinner - pot luck, traditional, carry out, Chinese, etc. Past Shabbat Dinner Train participants are displayed on the wall near the library in the Temple. Stop by and take a look.
Let’s get the trains chugging again! If you would like to be a Shabbat Dinner Train host, or if you would like more information, please contact Jane Friedberg at 978-535-5049 or email her at mjanefriedberg@ gmail.com. 5
PRESCHOOL DIRECTOR
Seyla Cohen Mazel Tov to our TSP graduates! Fifty beautiful, smart, creative, fun-loving pre-K students graduated from Temple Shalom Preschool. It was so bittersweet. On one hand we were sad to see them leave our school; some have been here for nearly 4 years. On the other hand, we were excited for them to be moving on to kindergarten, fully prepared to take on this next phase of their lives.
Scouts. Last year the campers were so excited to interact, sing and dance with these talented boys and girls. It will be a real treat for Camp Shalom and Camp Einstein to see the scouts in action! And while we are thanking the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples, we would like to once again express our gratitude to them for providing scholarship funds to be used specifically for Camp Shalom and Camp Einstein. Along with an amazing summer camp, preparations for the 2018-2019 school year are being made. We are proud to say that we are growing by leaps and bounds; we are opening a fourth Cubs class this year. The demand for our outstanding preschool is sensational! We have waiting lists on our classes already. From our preschool family to yours, we wish you a wonderful summer!
We would like to thank the Temple Shalom Board members and congregants that attended our Annual Art Show and Silent Auction. It was a huge success for the preschool, as well as our scholarship program, which will assist families with financial need in sending their children to our incredible school. On June 4th, our fabulous summer fun will officially begin at both Camp Shalom and Camp Einstein. Camp Shalom is a fun-filled summer camp program for children ages two through five and Camp Einstein is an outstanding academic camp for children five through eight years old. Both programs have been developed with children’s needs and interests in mind, offering a welcoming place for little ones to come and enjoy the hot Naples summer. There’s something to peak everyone’s interest. Returning campers look forward to exciting experiences and new campers are surprised by the treats in store for them. Each camp offers a seven week program with a new theme each week.

Havurah Happenings By Debbie Zvibleman A havurah is a cluster group of members that have similar interests and are seeking friendship and extended family within the Temple membership. On April 26th, we had over 40 people who were interested in finding out about and joining a havurah. Three Havurot were formed and will be setting up their first meeting to put events on the calendar. We are still taking applications to complete a couple of other havurot including a Senior Singles havurah. Feel free to call me at 239-272-8878 or stop in the office to see Ana Maria Tamargo to fill out an application for havurah. We are also trying to get an accurate count of our Havurot. If you are in a havurah that has already been established, please touch base with Ana Maria so we can be sure that you are in our database. I look forward to overseeing and expanding havurot at Temple Shalom!
Tik kun Olam C ounci l by Ken Goldstein Social Action and Social Justice… Even in the Summer Hard to believe that summer has arrived! For many, it is a time to slow down and relax. While that’s a good thing, we can’t forget that not everyone has the luxury of taking a break. So many people are struggling with poverty and trying to support their families. Many are dealing with spouses or loved ones who have dementia. The Tikkun Olam Council (TOC) is working to help those in need, as well as helping to educate our community regarding issues such as human rights, civility and reducing gun violence. We are currently involved in a number of projects and volunteer opportunities that reflect our ongoing commitment to our very name - Tikkun Olam, “repairing the world.” Whether you are here in Southwest Florida or back home up north, we hope you will continue to volunteer your time and money to aid those in need and support social justice. Here are some of many things that we are working on: • Human Rights Film Festival of Southwest Florida Temple Shalom and the TOC are excited to co-sponsor this unique festival here in Southwest FL along with JCRC and Gen Shoah. Our mission is the educate, engage and facilitate discussion around human rights topics through film. • Civility Training Following our forum of Jewish values and civility we are working with the Federation and JCPA to build “… meaningful dialogue and deliberation across political and communal divides.” • Volunteer Survey We think many of our members are already involved in social action and social justice. We hope to see new ideas and suggestions that we can share with everyone. • Opportunities to volunteer The Guadalupe Center in Immokalee, the Dementia Respite Groups at the Naples Senior Center of JFCS and the Harry Chapin Food Bank are all excellent organizations that do great work and need volunteers. We wish everyone a safe and happy summer. We are excited to see you all again in the “season” next fall. For more information about any of the above please contact Ken Goldstein at kengoldstein@mac.com.

Who will automatically receive High Holy Day tickets? Temple Shalom members in good standing. Good standing means that there is no outstanding financial obligation to the Temple. Also, congregants must either have submitted their L’Shalom pledge payment plan or have contributed at least 25% of their 2018-2019 L’Shalom pledge by August 24. Other arrangements must be made by calling the Temple Shalom office. Who else may receive tickets? You may request complimentary tickets for immediate members of your family (parents, grandparents, siblings, children who are visiting from out of town), military personnel and college students (with ID), and visitors who are members of other Reform congregations (a reciprocity form must be sent from their home congregation to Temple Shalom). Can others not included in the above groups purchase tickets? Yes, however, seating is limited. So advanced planning is necessary. When available, what is the cost of a ticket to High Holy Day services? $100 is the cost for one ticket to all High Holy Day services. Can I apply the amount I pay for tickets towards a membership at Temple Shalom? Yes, we encourage you to do just that! The credit will be applied to membership if you join Temple Shalom by November 30, 2018. In fact, rather than purchase tickets, we encourage you to make a L’Shalom pledge to Temple Shalom, which may be fulfilled throughout the year, and join Temple Shalom’s family! Your tickets are then included with your pledge.
Specializing in: • Refractive Cataract Surgery
If I know of someone who cannot afford the High Holy Day tickets, can they still attend? Yes, provided they contact the Temple Shalom office in advance of the High Holy Days and we have available seating. It will be our pleasure to have them worship with us.

The Israel Scouts Friendship Caravan is made up of five girls, five boys and two Caravan leaders from all over Israel. In order to be in the Caravan, these teenagers (16 and 17 years old) went through a highly competitive selection process and were chosen based on their maturity, fluency in English, and performance skills. Scouting is big in Israel, with over 60,000 members. Those chosen to participate here are selected for their ability to best represent the State of Israel. As Israeli delegates, these teens have a love for Israel and a desire to share that with North Americans. The Scouts spend the 10 weeks of summer performing in synagogues and churches, schools and summer camps, even nursing homes – wherever people want to share their love for Israel.

Why does Temple need Endowments? A special thanks to those of you who made tribute gifts to endowments and especially to those who created new endowment funds in memory or honor of loved ones – we have seven new funds of $10,000 or more since 2014! We are also thankful to our outgoing Temple President Debbie Zvibleman, who contributed a percentage of every real estate sales commission involving or referred by a Temple member, to Endowments. If all of our members followed Debbie’s example of leadership and commitment to our future, we could be well on our way to achieve our $10 million goal – potentially contributing $400,000 annually (4%) to pay for the wonderful things Temple does! Members’ annual commitments (formerly dues) cover only about 70% of our expenses, like most synagogues. Today as in past years, annual Above & Beyond and special fundraising events are used to cover the 30% shortfall in expenses. Long term, endowment funds can offer an enduring source of revenue generation that will grow and enable us thoughtfully and strategically manage our current and future needs. If we have another economic downturn or personal setback, some donors may not able to make generous annual gifts. That is when the earnings on our Temple endowments can be tapped to generate the income needed to meet our shortfall. Just as in our own families, without savings to tide us over the bad times, we might have to borrow or do without many of the things that are important in our lives – and the life of the Temple.
With a completed endowment gift of $10,000 or more you will become a member of our Eternal Light Society.

You may be able to name your own fund or make a dedicated gift. Please call me at 239-450-8112 so that I can answer your questions and get you started.
