am writing this article from my hotel room in Israel, during our congregational trip. Our “Literary and Culinary Tour of Israel” has enabled us to delve deep beneath the surface of Israeli culture. On one of our first days, we met with Dr. Lee Perlman, from the Van Lear Institute. Dr. Perlman coined the phrase, “Art-Up Nation” and shared with us about the lively and vibrant culture in Israel. From the plethora of classical music offerings (thanks in large part to Russian immigrants), dance, and theater, all the way to pop music as a reflection of modern Israel. Watch the YouTube video “Golden Boy” from the Eurovision 2015 competition to see what I mean.

After Dr. Perlman’s lecture, I returned to my hotel room and decided to explore further some of the Israeli films that are currently in circulation. To my dismay, I learned that Netflix and Adam Miller Amazon Prime are not available in Israel! While that technical glitch may have stymied my efforts, the world of Israeli films is open to all of you. So, in addition to our summer learning opportunities, I want to share with you some film suggestions so that you, too, can explore the rich culture of modern Israel. Israeli cinema is known for its realistic portrayal and deep exploration of Israeli life – without the big-budget action films or comedies we see in American film. Keep this list handy for those days when the thunderstorms roll in, or when you are simply too tired to experience another hot Naples summer day. Rabbi

• 7 Days – Noted director/actress Ronit Elkabetz explores the world of Morrocan Israeli Jews. Set at the time of the First Gulf War, we watch her characters struggle with family values, expectations, and the tension of sitting shiva together. • The Syrian Bride – The Druze are a religious minority living primarily in Syria and Israel. Despite the lack of peace between those two countries, Druze women are allowed to cross the border to marry other Druze individuals. This film tells the story of one Israeli Druze woman on her wedding day. • Walk on Water – Once a taboo subject, this movie reveals the complex emotions experienced by Israelis with respect to the Holocaust. A Mossad agent is tasked with befriending young Germans believed to be the grandchildren of a Nazi war criminal. • Beaufort – A realistic glimpse into the life of young Israeli soldiers stationed in Lebanon just prior to the withdrawal. All of these films were recommended by Ayelet Kaufman, an Israeli producer who met with our group. The Confirmation Class of 2015

ithout a doubt, June is one of my favorite months of the year. Not only is it my birthday month but it’s when the American Conference of Cantor’s (ACC) annual convention takes place. The ACC is the professional organization of over 500 ordained or certified cantors that provides continuing education for Cantors, as well as congregational support. Every year the ACC sponsors an annual convention, the location changing every year. Last year we had an incredible experience in Israel and this year’s convention will takes place not far from us, in Ft. Lauderdale. The ACC Convention is truly one of the highlights of my year. I look forward to seeing classmates and friends, to praying in a community of Cantors at t’filah, to learning with high level scholars, and to getting a super charge of inspiration for the coming program year. This year we’ll also have the opportunity to hear and learn some of the music written for our new High Holy Day Machzor, Mishkan Ha’Nefesh.

This year’s convention is even more exciting for me because I was asked to co-chair the Cantor’s concert. As the progressive Jewish community celebrates NFTY’s (North American Federation of Temple Youth) 75th anniversary, we have put together a musical perspective taking a unique look at how the last 75 years have shaped today’s Cantor. The Annual ACC evening concert reflects the evolution of Jewish expression, through the music of our camp and Israeli experiences, as well as the influences of pop, folk, and Broadway. An array of ACC Cantors and musicians will be bringing our musical century to life, a picture of where we’ve been, and the journey we have yet to travel. 25 years… a quarter of a century!!!! It doesn’t sound

like much but after 25 years of being with Temple Shalom Preschool, looking back at all the hard work we have done, seeing all the amazing children grow up right before our eyes, it makes sense why TSP is the great school that it is, because of all the incredible people that have been part of our journey to get to this point. I had the privilege of starting my journey with Temple Shalom preschool 24 years ago. Who would have known that my life would change when I received a job offer from a remarkable woman, my mentor Nancy Ross! Nancy had the vision, the passion and the knowledge to start this preschool. She came up with the recipe to start this unique place. Ingredients: a tablespoon of love, a cup of passion, an ounce of knowledge, a pound of laughter, lots of hugs and kisses, and a pinch patience! Bake at 90 degrees at 100% humidity for 3 years. Our cupcakes are out there changing the world right now! Through the years we had wonderful teachers contribute their special touch and made this recipe better and better each year. We are all very proud of what we do. TSP educated thousands of children in this quarter of a century. Our TSP graduates became doctors, lawyers, politicians, directors of photography, performers, teachers, mommies and daddies and the list goes on and on…. I salute these amazing teachers for the wonderful job they did through these 25 years. People think that preschool is all about playtime, but here at TSP we strive to give our children the foundation for a successful life. It’s what we have done for 25 years, and it’s my promise that this is what we’ll continue doing in the future. We will say farewell to our four year olds on May 22nd, with great pride and a bit of sadness as so many of them have been with us for four years. We are pleased that the children are so well prepared to move on to kindergarten. They have been taught phonics and sight word basics preparing them for a solid reading foundation. Writing journals have been used as a tool to expand the creative process using imaginative thinking and phonetic soundout words. A basis for math, emphasizing simple addition and subtraction skills have been taught through the use of manipulative and sorting instruments. In science, these children have learned measuring, sink and float concepts, and participated in experiments using basic chemistry. Art, cultural studies, geography, current events, and other higher order level teaching have provided our students

with knowledge of the world around them. We are proud to say that a majority of our Pre-K students are reading or surpassing beginning reading, writing and math skills. Our little ones have grown so big and capable of many things from when they began their preschool journey. This reminds us that time moves very quickly. Each stage of our child’s growth brings wonderful new changes, but we should try to slow down Seyla Cohen, and appreciate what Preschool Director is happening now. Our Temple Shalom Preschool Family is so blessed to have the children and appreciate every moment we are able to be a part of their lives. So don’t wish away those sleepless nights, be amazed at the stages your child goes through, enjoy them all. Sit on the floor and play with them, read them a book at night, know that before long they will be able to read to you. Listen to your child tell you about their first day in school. All too soon you will hear about their first day in high school or college. Cherish and love every minute that you have with these little angels.

Sisterhood News

Debra Antzis, Sisterhood President

here’s a lot going on in my world right now, both good and not good. My oldest daughter is just back from her 8th grade trip to the Capitol, which she was a little nervous about (it went well, so good). A very dear friend’s husband passed away recently after a long illness (words fail . . .). A candidate for the position of Temple’s Director of Congregational Education is visiting this week, and I am trying to arrange her schedule (stressful but good). Another dear friend required unexpected surgery and is recovering carefully (good? not so good? not even sure). In June, my family will be getting a puppy (good, according to the women in my house, but not so good, if you ask my husband). In the midst of it all, I realized this morning that I forgot to drive a friend to a meeting that I had promised to take her to last week (not good!) and my kids were sick and stayed home from school today (not good, but good too — we snuggled, did some sudoku together, and the 3rd grader made a wallet out of duct tape). Through it all, friends help me. We meet for coffee or lunch, they give advice, a hug, a meal for fourteen or so people, a ride for my kids, a smile to share the joy or relief, forgiveness for mistakes and oversights. I do the same for them (smaller meals, though). That’s what we do, right? Be there for each other, giving and receiving help when needed, listening when someone needs to talk, sharing our abundance, being a community, a Naples family. If you think about it, that’s what Sisterhood does too. Among other things, Sisterhood supports Temple and helps the Religious School and Preschool when they need it. Sisterhood provides a shiva meal at Temple for those who have recently suffered a loss. Sisterhood holds

monthly meetings, usually luncheons, open to all, to inform and entertain us. Sisterhood provides the Oneg after services on Friday to feed us something sweet at the end of the week. The meetings and the Onegs also give us a reason to sit and chat, get to know one another a little better, strengthening our community and welcoming those who are new among us. Sisterhood helps and gives to us and to Temple in obvious ways. But Sisterhood also helps and gives to those who are open to it in more subtle ways. For me, Sisterhood is part of my support system — a network of women who will step up and help me and each other when we need it. Most of the people mentioned in the above three paragraphs are members of Sisterhood. Some of them became my friends because we worked together on Sisterhood events and projects, or sat next to each other at a meal or an Oneg. Does all my support come from Sisterhood? Of course not. Do all the people whose lives I try to help belong to Sisterhood? Again, of course not. My friends are my friends, my family, because of who they are and who I am. But Sisterhood helps me connect, and helps me give, and helps me receive. What is your relationship with Sisterhood? Does it give to you and help you? Are you open to that? Can you reciprocate? Havurah News....

n Wednesday, 4/29, twelve members of the Temple’s Shoshanah Havurah volunteered to serve at the Naples Senior Center of Jewish Family and Community Services (JFCS). Twelve of us, Paula Brody and Merrill Hassenfeld, Rabbi and Jane Perman, Don and Arlene Shapiro, Dan and Judi Spintman, Howard and Sheila Agranat, and Mort and Myra Friedman spent the day at the Senior Center where we served lunch and assisted the participants. All of us were unanimous in our belief that it was a richly rewarding experience that satisfied our desire to participate in a worthwhile social service project. Our havurah is but one of several successful Temple havurot that have formed over the years, providing a unique friendship circle of like-minded people grounded in Jewish values and service to the community.

He or she will ask for a face-to-face meeting at your home, a Starbucks or any place that is most convenient for you. We hope you will say YES. We want to complete 100 of these one-to-one conversations over the remainder of the year with a sampling of our membership. These conversations will help to strengthen existing relationships as well as create new relationships within our Temple community. They will also help us to meet the needs of our congregation as we understand your needs and passions.

The Power of BOGO

eeding the hungry is the Jewish people’s way to perform gemilut hasadim (acts of loving kindness) and tikun olam (to repair the world). Did you know that right here in Naples and the surrounding areas there are people who cannot afford to buy food? In Judaism, giving to the poor is not viewed as a generous, magnanimous act; it is simply an act of justice and righteousness, the performance of a duty, giving the poor their due. Temple Shalom expanded on their relational Judaism to include those who are food insecure. Since the start of this program at the end of November 2013 Temple Shalom’s congregation and religious school have donated 700 BOGO blue bags to the JFCS and Meals of Hope food pantries. When you go food shopping and see those weekly specials that we all know as BOGO (Buy One Get One) take advantage of the special and place the free non-perishable foodstuff in the non-disposable shopping bag that we give to you to fill on a weekly basis. Bring the filled bag back to Temple either during the week or when you come to Shabbat services. We will Mike Popper from Meals of Hope loading his car with food then give you an empty bag to refill. Remember, BOGO not donated by Publix and Temple Shalom. Pictured also is Temple only means Buy One Get One. It also means to Bring One Give member Harvey Brenner who facilitated the donation. One for the food pantry. Let’s continue to keep this a successful campaign to help those in our community who are food insecure. Hunger is an every day occurrence for many. Don’t forget to get one of the empty bags during our Oneg after services and bring it back full next Friday night or during the week. 10

Temple Shalom Preschool Art Show is a HUGE Success!!!

Temple Shalom Preschool celebrated its 25th year anniversary and proved a huge success at the annual Temple Shalom Preschool Art Show. Extraordinary art pieces, created by the children, were beautifully displayed along the walls of the social hall where parents gathered to view their childrenâ€™s creations.

The evening gave parents, congregants, guests and TSP staff the chance to mingle and enjoy an evening of wine, refreshments, and participate in the amazing silent auction. Silent auction items were generously donated from community businesses. As in past years, Art Director, Linda Ginsberg, was instrumental in helping students create their masterpieces. These fundraising efforts contribute towards enhancing the schoolâ€™s program and tuition assistance for the TSP Experience.

Each set consists on two booksâ€”one for Rosh Hashanah and one for Yom Kippur. Each set of books is $108.00. The same dedication will be placed in each set. Showing We Care

Contributions made to the various Temple Shalom funds are wonderful ways to show your appreciation of family and friends, to celebrate happy occasions and to honor the memories of loved ones. We suggest a minimum donation of chai ($18.00). With a minimum donation of $18.00, a notice of your gifts will be sent to the honoree and mention will be published monthly in The Voice.

Operations

General Fund: Donations used for operating expenses. Tree of Life: Each ‘Rock’ and ‘Star of David’ is a donation of $540.00; each ‘Leaf ’ is $240.00. The contribution must be received in its entirety before engraving is ordered. Burn The Mortgage Fund: Established by Gerry and Pearl Sugarman to reduce payment of any existing mortgage.

Worship

Memorial Fund: Donations made in honor of a loved one who has passed. William Freschel Kiddush Fund: All donations help provide Kiddush Lunch each Saturday following worship services. A $150 donation is considered to be a sponsorship to honor a special someone or occasion. Prayerbook Fund: The new minimum contributions to purchase a plaque for Shabbat and High Holiday Books: $50.00 / Pentateuch & Haftarah books: $100.00 Flower Fund: Provides Bimah flowers each Shabbat. A $150.00 donation is considered to be a sponsorship in memory or in honor of a special someone or occasion.

Mitzvah Baskets: A $100.00 donation will purchase several hundred dollars of food for JFCS.

Arby Lipman Children's Library: Children and adolescent books and magazine subscriptions, and supplies are purchased.

Dr. Philip & Shirley Gilbert Music Fund: Donations are used for the enhancement of music at Temple Shalom.

Jack and Charlotte Ward Family Children's Music Shelf: Audio and video musical tapes for children.

Religious School

Religious School: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for Jewish learning in both Sunday and Hebrew Schools. Religious School Enrichment Fund: Donations augment the Religious School budget to enrich the education of our children. Polster Religious School Scholarship Fund: To purchase or supplement Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need. Ben Calmenson Fund: Donations will be used to create sponsorships to send children to attend Camp Coleman. Rabbi Abraham Shusterman Children's Center Memorial Fund: To support our Religious School and Preschool. Sisterhood Religious School Scholarship Fund: To provide Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need. Joseph S. Weinfeld Faculty Development Fund: Donations support both curriculum and teaching skill enrichment activities for Sunday and Hebrew School teachers. Youth Activities Fund: Donations provide financial support for children of our congregation to attend Camp Coleman, to take part in regional/national youth conventions, and to experience a summer in Israel.

Preschool

Preschool Fund: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for the Preschool. Preschool Enrichment Fund: The enhancement of curriculum, educational programs and experiences.

Endowment

Endowment Fund: Donations help to secure the future, enrich the programs and provide for emergency needs of the congregation. Scholar In-Residence Endowment Fund: Supports the endowment established by Shirley and Henry Kraus. This fund enables Temple Shalom to bring visiting scholars to the Temple as an educational benefit to the membership. The Herbert & Ruth Abramson Fund: To supplement the general operating fund and to provide enrichment for Temple functions.

Clergy/Leadership

Rabbi Miller’s Discretionary Fund: For tzedakah, charitable purposes,and general enhancement of the Rabbi's work. Cantor Azu's Discretionary Fund: For tzedakah, charitable purposes, and general enhancement of the Cantor's work. Leadership Fund: Donations are used for the enhancement and enrichment of leadership programs at Temple Shalom.

Library

Rabbi James & Jane Perman Library: Books, magazine subscriptions and supplies are purchased.

Social Action

David and Lillian Thalenfeld Fund for Social Justice: Provides support for Temple participation in social justice events and activities.

**Oneg Shabbat:

Contact Sandy Stone (Oct. 15 to May 15) or Evelyn Cole (May 16 to Oct. 14) for sponsorship in celebration of an event or to honor someone. This fund is administered by Temple Shalom Sisterhood.
