The History of A merican Jews – K’lal Israel

his year marks the 365th anniversary of the first Jews to officially settle in America. In 1654, a small group of Sephardic Jews from Recife, Brazil landed in the city of New Amsterdam, now called New York. The story of these pioneers is quite remarkable.

Their tale began with the expulsion of Jews from Spain and Portugal. In the late 1400’s and early 1500’s, many Jews faced a dire situation. After living for generations in those two countries, the Inquisition and Spanish Expulsion forced Jews to choose between fleeing for their lives, accepting conversion or being killed. While some died, and others converted, many escaped to other countries. Dispersed primarily across the Middle East and North Africa, a significant number traveled to the Netherlands – a nation known for its religious tolerance. Once in Holland, members of the Jewish community began to thrive, particularly finding success within the Dutch West India Company, the trading company which represented the Netherlands in the New World. As a result, Jews began to populate the colonies created in the New World.

The Portuguese invaded the Dutch colony of Brazil, capturing the city of Recife in 1654. This turn of events forced the Jewish residence to flee once again. Boarding a ship, they set off to the north, in the hopes of finding a safe shelter at another Dutch colony. After being rebuffed at several ports, they arrived in New Amsterdam. Peter Stuyvesant, the mayor of New Amsterdam, ordered the Jews thrown into jail upon arrival. Known for his anti-Semitic bias, Stuyvesant petitioned to have the Jews removed from his city and the colony. To his dismay, the Dutch West Indies Company ordered him to immediately free the Jews, and restore their belongings.

The Jewish stakeholders in the Dutch West Indies Company overruled Stuyvesant and protected their Jewish brothers and sisters from Recife, Brazil. Though they likely did not know the Brazilian Jews personally, they believed in the value of k’lal yisrael – the notion that we are all one people Israel. This concept teaches that we find strength as a community, which includes supporting one another during times of need. M

usic, especially song, touches the soul in a way that is difficult to express with words. Leonard Bernstein perhaps described it best: “Music can name the un-nameable and communicate the unknowable.” It is for this reason that we try to communicate with God through song; there is no other way as effective, as the text alone often can feel ineffectual. In fact, our Chasidic tradition teaches that “One who sings prays twice.”

In B’shalach (Exodus 15: 1-18), we sing Shirat Hayam (the Song of the Sea). This special Shabbat is called Shabbat Shira, the Sabbath of Song. The Israelites, led by Moses and then Miriam, break out into triumphant song on the shores of the Sea of Reeds (the Red Sea). Overcome with tremendous joy, relief and awe, song was the only way they could express their emotions.

The Israelites followed Moses and Miriam to the Red Sea but according to the midrash, the sea did not part for them until Nachshon, the son of Amminadav, courageously plunges into the raging waters. Because of his act of faith, God parts the sea. After they cross over, Pharaoh’s armies are swept away by the returning waters and the entire nation sings in thanksgiving together. Through their song they become one people in a powerful moment of exultation.

Looking at the text itself, the layout of the Hebrew words is unique. The song isn’t written in straight prose but as poetry.

Some think that the words are spaced to look like bricks laid over each other, reminiscent of the bricks the Israelites made and used as slaves in Egypt. Others have suggested that the Torah text looks like waves sweeping across the scroll, setting the context for us at the Red Sea. The singing of the text is unique as well. To add expressiveness and festivity to Shirat Hayam, the phrases that contain God’s name are sung with special musical “detours.” This special cantillation (melody) is the oldest song in Jewish history; it is a “Mi Sinai” tune, so holy and important that it seems as if it was given by God at Mount Sinai.

The Mi Chamocha text, a prayer of liberation in our liturgy, comes directly from the Song of the Sea. The parting of the sea is a moment of physical and spiritual redemption that we relive every time we sing this prayer. Shabbat Shira urges us to experience the exuberance of living. We, too, stand at the shore of a vast sea, and like Nachshon, we must take the first step. Go out, take a chance, step into the Red Sea of your life and watch the waters part. Our God of splendor and wonder provides countless miracles all around us, every day. I hope you’ll join us at Shabbat services on Saturday morning, January 19 at 10:00am as our Bar Mitzvah, Sam Isenberg chants this very special and beautiful melody.

A

s we head into the new year, I would like to take this opportunity to thank those of you who make our fundraising efforts so successful.

This community has been extraordinarily generous to Temple Shalom and we are truly grateful to those who have believed in our mission and invested in our program. What is the secret to our success? The personal involvement of a fabulous group of volunteers, who have dedicated hours and hours of time and effort to meeting, planning, and organizing our campaigns and fundraising events, calling, writing and soliciting individual gifts, analyzing results, thanking and recognizing our donors. And then they start again, brainstorming about the best way to bridge the gap between our pledge, fees and program income and our expenses for the next year.

It’s usually a bad idea to thank people by name, because you run the risk of inadvertently leaving someone out, but I am going to take that risk and ask forgiveness from anyone I neglect to mention here. The 2018-19 Above & Beyond campaign exceeded my wildest expectations, as a newcomer to Temple Shalom. Thanks to Nat and Susan Ritter, and co-chairs Ed and Lori Cohen, who chaired this enormous undertaking, we have raised $217,000 as of this writing. This was no accident; they went the extra mile and their personal touch made the difference.

We simply would not have an endowment or legacy gift program in place without the hard work, professionalism, and serious time commitment of Suzanne Lowe and the Endowment Committee. Our endowment is growing and recently got a nice boost from our Sisterhood, who made a generous gift of $10,000. We have 23 signed letters of intent by people who have included Temple Shalom in their estate plans.

The work of the Fundraising Steering Committee, led by Neil Heuer, has been invaluable in coordinating all the behind-thescenes work of the various fundraising efforts, and keeping them running smoothly and in harmony with one another.

What fun we will have, thanks to this year’s Gala Committees! Under the leadership of Silent Auction chair, Jessica Schaab, and her committee, and Gala co-chairs, Don and Arlene Shapiro, Merlin and Harriet Lickhalter, and David and Daryl Sissman, the Gala and Pre-Gala Silent Auction party will be the ideal venues to honor Bobbie and Gene Katz, while raising significant dollars for our General Fund. I have no doubt that they will meet their fundraising goal.

Men’s Club meets year-round to plan events that raise monies to help Temple across the board. Their support makes a real difference each year.

Even the littlest members of our Temple Family pitch in! Temple Shalom Preschool raises tens of thousands of dollars for equipment and scholarships at their annual Art Show, with the help of POTS (Parents of Temple Shalom) co-chairs, Emily Traylor and Christina Nelson. ecently you received an email or letter from Temple announcing that Temple Shalom leadership and the leaders of Jewish Federation of Greater Naples have come to a preliminary agreement for Federation to lease a portion of Temple’s land, and that Federation plans to build its new headquarters there. The agreement is subject to the approval of the members of Temple Shalom, and on January 31, at 6:30pm, we will hold a special meeting of our membership to vote on it. A formal notice of meeting, with a summary of the agreement and proxy material, will be mailed to you in the first part of January.

As you know, Federation supports Jewish and other philanthropic institutions in Naples, across the country and around the world. Federation and Temple Shalom have many common goals and have worked together for many years to further these goals. Federation also supports Temple, especially our Religious School and Preschool, in substantial ways.

Federation is growing. Its offices are small, with most of its events and larger meetings held off-site. Federation staff members share offices, and committee meetings are often cramped. Federation’s current lease ends in 2020, and its leaders have made the decision to find a new home, large enough to accommodate its needs.

In the spring of this year, Federation leaders approached Temple leadership about the possibility of building on the unoccupied parcel of land, owned by Temple, that is immediately to the west of our parking lot. This parcel is one of three parcels given to Temple in 1990 by a small group of our members who wished to make it possible for Temple to build its current home.

The Temple building and parking lot occupy two of the parcels, and the third parcel has remained vacant. This third parcel is about 4.4 acres in size, and is currently zoned for residential use.

Temple’s leaders — Rabbi Miller, Cantor Azu, Executive Director Deborah Fidel and the Board of Trustees — think that allowing Federation to lease and build upon the land is a good idea. We wish to support Federation in its philanthropic work and its work on behalf of our community, the Jewish people, and the State of Israel. We think that this is an extremely appropriate use for the land, in line with the purpose for which it was originally given to Temple. In addition, we think that it will be very good for Temple to have Federation as our neighbor.

While we believe the idea is a good one, our leadership felt that there were many factors to evaluate and consider. Our most important priority has been to make sure any agreement between Temple and Federation is carefully crafted to protect Temple’s interests, ensure a fair and reasonable result for both Temple and Federation, and arrive at an outcome that we expect to strengthen Temple, Federation and the Jewish Community of Collier County for generations to come.

The preliminary agreement that we have reached, and which we are asking you to vote to approve, provides for an initial lease term of fifty years with a nominal rental rate of $18 a year. One subsequent renewal period of twenty-five years is possible, at a market rate to be determined, if Federation so chooses and Temple agrees. The preliminary agreement also includes provisions protecting both parties, and provides that Temple must approve all site and exterior plans for the property. Federation will bear all costs for environmental studies and rezoning expenses, plus all construction expenses.

You will receive more information about the agreement when the formal notice of meeting goes out in January. We scheduled three informational meetings, two of which will have already taken place by the time you read this, with one more to take place on Sunday, January 6th, at 10:00am at Temple. If you have questions about the proposal and cannot come to the next meeting, please feel free to contact me (my email is president@naplestemple.org) or any of our leadership — Rabbi Miller, Cantor Azu, Executive Director Deborah Fidel and the members of the Board of Trustees — to discuss.

Thanks again to Merrill Hassenfeld, chair of the committee negotiating on behalf of Temple on this matter, as well as its members, Ed Alexander, Sheldon Starman, Scott Weinstein and Debbie Zvibleman, for their continuing leadership on this important project.

Finally, many grateful thanks to the wise and generous individuals who originally donated land to Temple and enabled us to build our current home. They have made it possible for Temple to take this step, helping to provide a welcoming space for Federation and the Jewish community in Naples.

GALA 2019 – GET TO KNOW BOBBIE & GENE KATZ

magine for a few moments a group of five Temple Shalom members involved in conversation when Bobbie Katz walks by.

Let’s listen in.

Member 1: Look, there goes our membership committee chair. I met her at the wine and cheese get-togethers she hosts for new and prospective members.

Member 2: That’s not the only committee she chairs. Don’t forget the Caring Connection, you know, the one that sends cards to members enjoying milestone events and families in mourning. That’s a lot of cards!

Member 3: That committee also handles providing meals to members just home from the hospital who can’t cook for themselves, and gathering the necessary Jews for shiva minyans at home. She jumps into action and coordinates with her committee members. Oh, yes, and she’s on the Tikkun Olam committee and was liaison between the “One Family” initiative and the Temple Shalom board. She—and Gene too—work tirelessly every Mitzvah Day. Member 4: I remember her from years ago. When I first came to Naples, she was president of the local section of National Council of Jewish Women. Didn’t she also serve NCJW at the national level? I’ve heard her say she loved her work for NCJW so much that she dedicated her life to being a volunteer. She supported NCJW’s annual luncheons for the visually impaired.

When NCJW disbanded, she brought the project to the Temple’s Tikkun Olam committee, which continued it. I think it went on for more than 30 years. Does that woman ever run out of energy?

Member 5: Nope. Never. And she’s been doing this good work all her adult life. She told me that when she was growing up, she saw her grandfather involved in UJA, so as soon as she arrived in Naples, she followed in his footsteps and served on the board of the Jewish Federation.

Member 2: Yes, and served four years as its president.

Member 3: Don’t forget she chaired Jewish Family and Community Services for several years, too.

Member 1: I remember fondly the two years she was president of Temple Shalom’s Sisterhood.

But even better, she was an outstanding president of the whole Temple congregation.

Lately, she was honored with the BBYO Leadership Award and then the Woman of Valor designation. Great honors.

Member 4: That woman just can’t say no. How lucky for this community. That must be Bobbie with Horse by Gene Katz why Rabbi Miller calls her “the Temple’s cheerleader.”

Member 5: But somehow, she still manages to get to the beach at Lowdermilk Park on weekends. She sits with the same people every time—for 20 years. No reading, no walking, just “sit and schmooze.” Her mother also loved the beach, so she says it’s in her blood.

Member 3: You’d think a girl born in Brooklyn wouldn’t be a beach bunny, but she and Gene had a house on Long Beach Island in New Jersey. Gene bought it as a surprise for her shortly after they were married. Bobbie told me she was “beyond excited.” She lived there throughout the summer. Gene came after closing his dental office on Fridays and returned Monday mornings. They used it less and less after they moved to Naples in 1990 and finally sold it in the early 2000s. She misses it to this day.

Member 2: I wonder if she took up horseback riding a few days a week to help her get over missing the beach house.

Member 4: Naw, probably because she loved riding while in college and wanted to get back to it. She rode the same horse— named Raider—every time, and was responsible for taking care of it before and after her one-hour rides.

Member 1: Really? I didn’t know that. I do know Gene has said Bobbie was the best thing that ever happened to him. They’ve enjoyed a deep love since the beginning. Don’t forget, they married five months after their first date.

Member 4: Gene has also told people he is happy and proud that most of Bobbie’s life has been dedicated to this Jewish community. He’s her greatest supporter.

Member 3: Now, the entire community can show its support for Bobbie and Gene when they are honorees at the Temple Shalom gala fundraising celebration March 9 at Grey Oaks Country Club. I’ve heard that the invitations will go out soon.

CONNECT WITH US A nnouncing a Bereavement Group for Members of the Temple Shalom Community

In the spirit of our tradition, which calls us to perform the mitzvah of Nihum Avelim (comforting mourners), Temple Shalom will be offering a Bereavement Support Group for people who are grieving for a loved one. The group, which will observe confidentiality of communication, will meet from January to June, 2019, on the 2nd and 4th Friday of each month, beginning on Friday, January 11 at 9:30am. Group size will be limited to 12 people. The facilitators, members of Temple Shalom, are Arline Kaplan, Ph.D., and Leslie Wasserman, M.A. Both Arline and Leslie, licensed in New York and Michigan respectively, have extensive experience with groups and with people experiencing grief and loss. “We are hopeful that sharing our stories with empathic, compassionate others will allow some healing, solace and peace into our lives. CONNECT WITH US Havurah Happenings

On November 16, we had our Havurah Shabbat Dinner.

Over 70 people attended our dinner and services. It was great to see so many of you. We started Havurot 19 years ago and we have groups that are still together today as they have become family, supporting one another and sharing in life cycle events.

We are currently looking to place young families together.

I can personally say that I joined a Havurah when my children were young and it was wonderful to see our children grow up together. We shared holidays with our kids as well as had adult activities. Also, if you have an event that you would like to share with others, please let me know. We would love to see your pictures from your events.

Remember that Temple events can also be a Havurah event, such as the Preschool Art Auction, Mitzvah Day, the Temple Gala, or Men’s Club fundraiser, “Guys and Dolls” at Broadway Palm Theater to name a few. Just remember to be considerate of the interests of the group when you do plan an event and it will be more successful.

-Debbie Zvibleman Shayna Aronson recently joined the Temple Shalom community as the Development Coordinator. In this position, she works closely with volunteers and other staff members concerning fundraising. She provides support for donor events and other fundraising initiatives to enable the Temple’s extended growth. Shayna was born in Miami and was raised in New York. She moved back to Florida 4.5 years ago and has no plans of returning to the cold. Shayna currently lives in Fort Myers with her husband Joel. She enjoys cooking, baking, playing music, shopping, and boating.

Havurah Yedidut Our Havurah Yedidut (“Friendship” in Hebrew) was founded in 2004. While the size of our membership has varied over the years, most of the founding members have remained as an active and a very close-knit circle as we find ourselves on the verge of celebrating 15 years together.

Our longevity is due in no small part to our appreciation of, and respect for diversity. We came to Naples from various parts of the country and from Canada. In the same age-group, all of us have led our lives in diverse professions. We came with a variety of religious backgrounds, hold diverse political views, and enjoy different personal hobbies. We have also participated in a wide variety of activities together. These include dinners at our homes and at different local restaurants, collective celebrations of holidays, visits to museums throughout the state, various collective cruises, game evenings, and numerous Temple-sponsored programs.

Several of our members have assumed important leadership positions at Temple.

Over the many years, we have laughed together and cried together. We take pride that we have survived and thrived because we have treated each other as more than just friends. Havurah Yedidut is our family in Naples.

Corrine and Jon moved here from Sacramento, CA this past January. Although Corrine is originally from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Jon is a native Californian.

Corrine’s father was a Jewish Federation Director, so she and her family lived in a number of different states. For the last six years, they have been going back and forth from Sacramento to NYC where their three adult children reside and where Jon still does all the merchandising for their family owned retail jewelry stores. They are very active in the gym and on the tennis courts and love both Naples and their new, much shorter commute to NYC.

ur Family Shabbat Experience, held in November, introduced children and their families to ways of connecting Judaism to Thanksgiving. A crowd of more than fifty students and their families participated, crafting a challah cover designed for the Thanksgiving table, decorating baskets to fill with food for the food pantry, and learning blessings for the meal. A most delicious dinner was served, and services were lively and interactive. We are thankful for our chairperson, Amy Hunter, for this dynamic program. The next Family Shabbat Experience is scheduled for February 8.

As part of the sixth grade Curriculum, students will be delving into their first study of the Holocaust, culminating with participation in the community-wide Yom HaShoah event in the spring. Students will visit the Holocaust Museum and Education Center of Southwest Florida, explore Holocaust studies in the classroom, tour an original box car with a museum docent, interview a survivor, and write a reflective essay about their experiences. Our sixth grade students will have a significant role in the community-wide event, scheduled for Sunday, April 28. These sixth graders are part of the last generation who will have the opportunity to meet a Holocaust survivor face-to-face. Participation in the program fulfills several mitzvot, including bearing witness and honoring our elders. This all-encompassing curriculum is a commitment to Jewish learning for families, and parents are invited to attend sessions to learn alongside their children.

A

s a brand new year begins, we reflect on what a successful year we have had at Temple Shalom Preschool. We ended the year with an incredible Thanksgiving and Chanukah celebration with all our children singing songs to a standing room only crowd. We have grown so big that for the first time we had to use both the Social Hall and MPR to have our annual Thanksgiving Day Feast. Our little ones just cannot get enough of TSP, so we opened our doors for Winter Camp. The children had so much fun playing, creating, experimenting, cooking and being with their friends. The fun here just never ends!

With the holidays behind us it’s that time of the year when the children at Temple Shalom Preschool begin to settle into their familiar surroundings. Here at TSP, their home-away-from-home, students enjoy returning to their classrooms, their comfort zone. Parents, as well as students, seem to sigh with relief when the hustle and bustle of the end of the year activities are behind them. It feels good to calm down and revert back to a more routine life style with more defined schedules. Children strive on structure so returning to a more predictable routine does them well.

In January, we will welcome our newest students; our Lil’ Cubs. Those little ones who missed the cut-off in September will begin their first school experience. Through the help and tender loving care of Miss Jane and Miss Sam, our new Lil’ Cubs class will have the children learn all about independence. It’s hard at first to leave Mommy and Daddy, but once they catch on to the routine, they become our newest endearing family members.

On January 18, we will host our TSP Tu B’Shevat Garden Shabbat. This event is one of our favorites as we see how are garden has grown and flourished. We celebrate Shabbat with our children and their families, and we learn all about Tu B’shevat.

We are very excited to announce Billy Jonas will be performing at TSP on Free Event January 28, 2019, at 1:00pm in the Sanctuary. Billy Jonas is a performer, Open to the Public singer-songwriter, composer, multi-instrumentalist, and educator who has perfected the art of the neo-tribal hootenanny with audiences around the globe. We are incredibly grateful to the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples for making this concert possible. Everybody in our community is invited to enjoy this concert along with our TSP friends and family.

Daniel Isakov moved from Hollis, NH in July 2017. He is a freshman attending Barron Collier High School. He is an honor student.

He loves sports. He was on the highschool freshman football team and has been invited to the varsity football team. Now he is the leading player of the high school basketball team. He is very friendly and has many friends. He is a sweet boy.

Everyone loves him. He is very excited about his upcoming Bar Mitzvah!

Samuel Isenberg 1.19.2019 Sam is in the seventh grade at Oakridge Middle School. He plays the trombone in the wind ensemble and jazz band. Sam is a fourth generation piano player and also enjoys composing music scores on the computer. He loves funny movies and laughing hard. Sam has two older brothers, Benjamin and Gabriel and a younger sister, Clara.

She will be joined in celebration by her proud parents, Shelly and Jason Bell, brother, Spencer, and loving grandparents, Leslie and Mark Wasserman. She is also the granddaughter of the late Linda and Stephen Bell. Kylie is a seventh grader at Oakridge Middle School in Naples. She enjoys playing the clarinet, videography, and art. For her mitzvah project, Kylie volunteers at Brooke’s Legacy Animal Rescue.

n November 30, Temple Shalom honored the members of our Legacy Society at a “preneg” (pre-service) reception generously sponsored by Dr. Mark and Mrs. Anne Rubin. We celebrated the more than thirty individuals who have demonstrated the foresight to provide for a future endowment gift to Temple in their estate planning documents. Jewish tradition teaches that each of us is responsible for making the world a better place for future generations.

By leaving a legacy, we ensure that Temple Shalom will continue to be the leading center of Reform Jewish life in the Naples area for our children, grandchildren and future generations.

If the values and traditions of your Jewish heritage make your life more meaningful, if the principles of inclusion, equality and continuity speak to your heart and your mind, if you believe Jews need a Jewish community, and the community needs a Jewish home, then a legacy gift to Temple Shalom is a tribute to who you are and what you stand for. We invite you to join the Legacy Society by signing a letter of intent to make such a gift to Temple.

The goal of our Endowment and Planned Giving Program is to provide long-range stability for our Temple while eventually generating income to assist in meeting current needs and opportunities, including new programs and positions. Like most synagogues, Temple Shalom’s annual L’Shalom commitments (formerly dues) cover only about 70% of our expenses.

Once our Endowment funds have grown to a sustainable level – our goal is $10 million to be raised in 10 years - they will offer an enduring source of revenue generation that will grow and enable us to thoughtfully and strategically manage our current and future needs.

In giving to sustain our present and secure our future, our Legacy Society members honor those who came before us, enrich the community with whom we share the joys and challenges of life today, and ensure a Jewish future for those who will follow—and like us, seek a diverse and egalitarian place of prayer, study and community in Southwest Florida. MITZVAH DAY - FEBRUARY 10 - 9AM

e are very excited to announce that Mitzvah Day planning and collections have begun for the annual Temple Shalom Mitzvah Day on Sunday, February 10th. This year the event is being chaired by Marv Weisberg and once again the Men’s Club will be providing a delicious breakfast to get everyone going!

Meals of Hope, a Mitzvah Day favorite, returns to Temple Shalom with a goal of reaching 50, 000 meals packed. Sounds like a lot? The Temple Shalom family has reached, and even surpassed that goal each year. We can do it again but, we need everyone’s help. These meals are distributed by the Meals of Hope food bank partners both locally and wherever there is a great need such as those areas affected by natural disasters this year.

So, how can you help? There are two ways. Believe it or not, each meal only costs about 20 cents. To reach our goal of 50,000 meals, we want to raise $10,000. Your donation of $18 means 90 meals. $36 will help make 180 meals and for $100, 500 meals can be made. You can mail your checks, made out to Temple Shalom, directly to the Temple with a note indicating Meals of Hope. You can also donate online by visiting the Temple’s website and following the Mitzvah Day link.

How else can you help? You can come on Mitzvah Day and help package the meals. It’s tons of fun and super easy! Get a table of your friends together and start the assembly line. Or join in at a table where you will make new friends. We’ll show you how to do it. You do not have to make a donation to join in on the packing.

Back again is Beading for Betterment. Make necklaces for the children of the Guadalupe Center in Immokalee to give to their mothers and grandmothers for Mother’s Day. This activity is for everyone age 10 and up. Mitzvah Day isn’t just about giving, it’s about doing too!

Join us on Mitzvah Day to help pack Meals of Hope and the other collection items listed below. The hustle and bustle of hundreds of our Temple family, starting with the very young (the kids love making dog biscuits for the animal shelter), working together to make the world whole and holy will leave you feeling great. R educing Gun Violence: Time to Act

n November 19 the Tikkun Olam Council (TOC) helped organize a presentation by Matthew Fidel entitled "From Parkland to Pittsburgh: How Reform Jews are Working to Stop Gun Violence.” Matthew is the son of our Executive Director, Deborah Fidel. He is an impressive young man and we were fortunate to hear him lead an informative discussion.

No matter where anyone may stand on the issue of guns, we can all agree that reducing gun violence is a worthwhile and necessary goal.

Matthew discussed what the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism (the RAC) is doing to encourage Congress to reduce gun violence. They are urging Congress to adopt the following eight policy proposals, “all of which would improve public safety, prevent gun violence, and save lives”.

• Banning the purchase and sale of assault weapons and high capacity ammunition magazines.

• Opposing expanded concealed carry reciprocity legislation, which would allow anyone with a concealed carry permit in one state to carry a concealed weapon in all states.

• Establishing universal background checks, closing the private sale loophole, and strengthening the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.

• Repealing the Dickey Amendment and restoring funding to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for research on gun violence.

• Closing the Charleston loophole, which permits federally licensed dealers to sell guns to purchasers if three business days pass without a positive verdict on their background check from the FBI. • Enacting a gun violence restraining order law, which would temporarily prohibit an individual from purchasing or possessing firearms when deemed by a judge to pose a danger to self or others.

• Opposing legislative efforts to deregulate the purchase and sale of gun silencers.

• Closing the boyfriend loophole, which allows convicted abusers and stalkers to buy and own firearms.

As we begin a new year, let’s work together to “…improve public safety, prevent gun violence, and save lives”.

Visions Luncheon On December 3, the annual Collier Association for the Visually Impaired luncheon took place in the social hall at Temple Shalom. This wonderful event was hosted by the Tikkum Olam Council. Members of the TOC committee, National Council of Jewish Women and Temple Shalom members were greeters, helped prepare the food, set the tables and hosted our guests.

It is a wonderful tradition that has been going on for 38 years in our community and will Dear Bobbie, continue for many more years to come.

The entertainment for the afternoon was provided by Jane Galler, the Preschool Music Thanks so much as always to Director. Everyone participated with musical instruments and the smiles on their faces the ladies of Temple Shalom were something worth seeing. They truly appreciate this very special holiday luncheon.

While in its infancy, the creators of theatrical productions shied away from overt Jewish themes, things began to change in the 1960s. Come and reminisce about some of Broadway’s Jewish themed hits.
