From Rabbi Miller The story is told of a man named Abraham who awakens one night with a start from the most realistic

dream. In his vision, Abraham discovers buried treasure under a nearby bridge. The dream felt so real, that Abraham decides to seek out the treasure. Walking through town, his heart rate accelerates as everything appears exactly like his dream. Reaching the bridge, Abraham starts to climb over the wall when a town guard calls out to stop him. Pulling Abraham back from the ledge, the guard asks what he is doing. Hesitating for a moment, Abraham tells him the truth about his dream. The guard laughs, replying, “If I believed in dreams, then I would heed my own. That in the home of a man named Abraham there is a secret compartment in the floor under his table which holds a bag full of coins and jewels.”

Surprised by the guards reply, Abraham quickly apologizes and runs back to his home. Moving his table out of the way, he notices for the first time a discolored section in the wood floor. With only a little effort he pries the section of flooring away to reveal a cloth bag, full of coins and jewels. A treasure that was under his nose the whole time.

We may not have found a bag of treasure, but we have all had that moment when we notice for the first time something special or unique that had been present all along. We feel the same sense of awe and wonder experienced by Moses when he stops to notice a single burning bush in the middle of the Sinai wilderness. Perhaps it occurred when we saw a familiar room from a new angle; came across a forgotten memento in our home; or found an unknown space in a place we know well.

Here at Temple Shalom, we have many hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Our wonderful and warm Saturday morning services in the chapel offer community and connection. At Mitzvah Day, February 8th, you are sure to discover many activities, in addition to Meals of Hope, that positively impact our community. Shabbat at the Beach brings our sacred worship into the beauty of Naples. Monthly Torah Talk provides the chance to learn and explore our sacred texts with friends. And on January 11th, you can experience the spiritually uplifting Healing Service for those who are ill, and the loved ones who are by their sides.

There are too many gems to list in one place – and all are here waiting to be found. Come in and discover for yourself the treasures of Temple Shalom. And if you need help in your quest, we are here to guide you along the way.

I am the daughter of Lorel Martens. I am in 7th grade at Pine Rige M.S. I dance en pointe at Naples Academy of Ballet and my dream is to be a professional ballerina. I also enjoy painting, drawing, hanging out with my friends and babysitting with my mom. For my Bat Mitzvah project I volunteered as a teacher’s assistant at Bonita Art League.

From Cantor Azu Blessings For me, one of the most beautiful aspects of Judaism is that there is a blessing or prayer for virtually everything. The Talmud defines prayer as the service of the heart (Ta’anit 2a) suggesting that prayer should express the deepest feelings and longings of the soul. Through our long history, these longings have taken shape and been formed into a myriad of blessings or berachot for nearly every occasion, both ordinary and extraordinary.

There are blessings for every type of food and drink, upon seeing wonders of nature. There is a blessing when one recovers from grave illness or survives danger. Virtually every aspect of life is marked by a blessing. Perhaps one of the most often recited blessings is the Shehecheyanu, “Blessed are You, Eternal our God, Ruler of the universe, who has kept us alive, sustained us, and brought us to this time”. This blessing provides a wonderful way to mark special occasions in our lives such as the birth of a new life, a new venture or even the tasting of a season’s first fruits. When we take the time to focus our minds and recite a blessing or prayer, we transform our mundane experiences to moments of profound sanctity. We come to see and understand that life is a gift to us.

Since the 1980’s the Mi Shebeirach, our prayer for healing has become a central part of our services and its inclusion into the Reform Machzor, Mishkan T’filah, has led to the creation of numerous musical settings of that text as well as the creation of healing services. For many people struggling with illness, these rituals provide community and inspiration.

We invite you to join Rabbi Miller and myself on Sunday, January 11 at 2pm, for a healing service. Together we will recite blessings and prayers where the focus is on healing the spirit rather than curing the body. Through meditation, music, prayer, guided visualization and teaching from Jewish texts we will join together as one community.

with me and said “I’ve always had such great respect for our teachers but after reading this letter I get it!”

I couldn’t agree more! It is truly with tremendous gratitude that I say thank you to our Religious School teachers for all that you do for our children.

I hope you will join me later this year, in May, at our Teacher Appreciation Shabbat Service. As we begin a new year, let us remember to say Thank You to our teachers, leaders and role-models. Ron and Melissa join me in wishing you and your family a very Happy New Year. May 2015 bring you good health and happiness, joy and laughter!

Dear Parent: About THAT kid…by Amy Murray “Dear Parent, I know. You’re worried. Every day, your child comes home with a story about THAT kid. The one who is always hitting shoving pinching scratching maybe even biting other children. The one who always has to hold my hand in the hallway. The one who has a special spot at the carpet, and sometimes sits on a chair rather than the floor. The one who had to leave the block center because blocks are not for throwing. The one who climbed over the playground fence right exactly as I was telling her to stop. The one who poured his neighbor’s milk onto the floor in a fit of anger. On purpose. While I was watching. And then, when I asked him to clean it up, emptied the ENTIRE paper towel dispenser. On purpose. While I was watching. The one who dropped the REAL ACTUAL F-word in gym class.

You’re worried that THAT child is detracting from your child’s learning experience. You’re worried that he takes up too much of my time and energy, and that your child won’t get his fair share. You’re worried that she is really going to hurt someone some day. You’re worried that “someone” might be your child. You’re worried that your child is going to start using aggression to get what she wants. You’re worried your child is going to fall behind academically because I might not notice that he is struggling to hold a pencil.

I know.

Your child, this year, in this classroom, at this age, is not THAT child. Your child is not perfect, but she generally follows rules. He is able to share toys peaceably. She does not throw furniture. He raises his hand to speak. She works when it is time to work, and plays when it is time to play. He can be trusted to go straight to the bathroom and straight back again with no shenanigans. She thinks that the S-word is “stupid” and the C-word is “crap.”

I know.

I know, and I am worried, too.

You see, I worry all the time. About ALL of them. I worry about your child’s pencil grip, and another child’s letter sounds, and that little tiny one’s shyness, and that other one’s chronically empty lunchbox. I worry that Gavin’s coat is not warm enough, and that Talitha’s dad yells at her for printing the letter B backwards. Most of my car rides and showers are consumed with the worrying.

But I know, you want to talk about THAT child. Because Talitha’s backward Bs are not going to give your child a black eye. I want to talk about THAT child, too, but there are so many things I can’t tell you. I can’t tell you that she was adopted from an orphanage at 18 months. I can’t tell you that he is on an elimination diet for possible food allergies, and that he is therefore hungry ALL. THE. TIME. I can’t tell you that her parents are in the middle of a horrendous divorce, and she has been staying with her grandma. I can’t tell you that I’m starting to worry that grandma drinks…

I can’t tell you that his asthma medication makes him agitated.

I can’t tell you that her mom is a single parent, and so she (the child) is at school from the moment before-care opens, until the moment after-care

closes, and then the drive between home and school takes 40 minutes, and so she (the child) is getting less sleep than most adults.

I can’t tell you that he has been a witness to domestic violence.

That’s okay, you say. You understand I can’t share personal or family information. You just want to know what I am DOING about That Child’s behavior. I would love to tell you. But I can’t.

I can’t tell you that she receives speech-language services, that an assessment showed a severe language delay, and that the therapist feels the aggression is linked to frustration about being unable to communicate.

I can’t tell you that I meet with his parents EVERY week, and that both of them usually cry at those meetings.

I can’t tell you that the child and I have a secret hand signal to tell me when she needs to sit by herself for a while.

I can’t tell you that he spends rest time curled in my lap because “it makes me feel better to hear your heart, Teacher.”

I can’t tell you that I have been meticulously tracking her aggressive incidents for 3 months, and that she has dropped from 5 incidents a day, to 5 incidents a week.

I can’t tell you that the school secretary has agreed that I can send him to the office to “help” when I can tell he needs a change of scenery.

I can’t tell you that I have stood up in a staff meeting and, with tears in my eyes, BEGGED my colleagues to keep an extra close eye on her, to be kind to her even when they are frustrated that she just punched someone AGAIN, and this time, RIGHT IN FRONT OF A TEACHER. The thing is, there are SO MANY THINGS I can’t tell you about That Child.

I can’t even tell you the good stuff. I can’t tell you that his classroom job is to water the plants, and that he cried with heartbreak when one of the plants died over winter break. I can’t tell you that she kisses her baby sister goodbye every morning, and whispers “You are my sunshine” before mom pushes the stroller away. I can’t tell you that he knows more about thunderstorms than most meteorologists. I can’t tell you that she often asks to help sharpen the pencils during playtime. I can’t tell you that she strokes her best friend’s hair at rest time. I can’t tell you that when a classmate is crying, he rushes over with his favorite stuffy from the story corner.

The thing is, dear parent that I can only talk to you about YOUR child. So, what I can tell you is this: If ever, at any point, YOUR child, or any of your children, becomes THAT child… I will not share your personal family business with other parents in the classroom. I will communicate with you frequently, clearly, and kindly. I will make sure there are tissues nearby at all our meetings, and if you let me, I will hold your hand when you cry. I will advocate for your child and family to receive the highest quality of specialist services, and I will cooperate with those professionals to the fullest possible extent. I will make sure your child gets extra love and affection when she needs it most. I will be a voice for your child in our school community. I will, no matter what happens, continue to look for, and to find, the good, amazing, special, and wonderful things about your child. I will remind him and YOU of those good amazing special wonderful things, over and over again.

And when another parent comes to me, with concerns about YOUR child…

I will tell them all of this, all over again.

Preschool on Parade

A Brand New Year!

With the holidays behind us, it’s that time of the year when the children at Temple Shalom Preschool begin to settle into their familiar surroundings. Here at TSP, their home-away-from-home, students enjoy returning to their classrooms, their comfort zone. Parents, as well students, seem to sigh relief when the hustle and bustle of end of the year activities are behind them. It feels good to calm down and revert back to a more routine life style with more defined schedules. Children strive on structure so returning to a more predictable routine does them well.

One of the goals of Temple Shalom Preschool is to teach the children, from an early age, the importance of Mitzvah, giving back to society. Mitzvah is defined as a religious duty or obligation and one of the commandments of Jewish religious law.

We are all getting ready for Mitzvah Day on February 8th. This is an annual event in which temple and preschool families help give back to the Naples community. As in the past, we will be helping homeless children of Collier County by collecting toiletries and providing them with much needed necessities. Another favorite activity is baking doggie biscuits for the Humane Society. The children love to make the biscuit dough and shape it and decorated for the animals they love. In addition, we will be collecting items for “The Purple Bag Project” This is a project to help those children going through chemotherapy and delivers chemo care bags to brighten their day and make the process a little easier for them.

The TSP children will be making puppets to put in the bags with all the other items collected. Such deeds give meaning to values so important to instill in children at a tender age. Mitzvah Day brings joy, satisfaction, and a sense of accomplishment to both parents and children. What a nice way to begin the New Year.

In January we welcome our newest students; our Lil’ Cubs. Those little ones who missed the cut-off, and turned two after September, have begun their first school experience. Through the help and tender loving care of Miss Jane, our new Lil’ Cubs class is thriving and kids begin to learn all about independence. It’s hard at first to leave Mommy and Daddy, but once they catch on to the routine, they become our newest endearing family members.

President’s Message

Temple Shalom is an exciting place to be. Many activities are happening every week. The clergy are working

with the youth in many ways. Foremost, they are providing a Jewish education for our youth and as they get older, preparing them for their B’nai Mitzvah and confirmation. Last month the Rabbi and the confirmation class went to Washington D.C to visit both the RAC (Reform Judaism’s Religious Action Center) and the U.S. Congress to lobby for the social action of their passion. The Cantor works closely with the Bar/Bat Mitzvah students to help them prepare for their day on the bimah. She is also producing a CD with the wonderful prayers and songs that we love in various melodies as

sung at services.

In January, our Sisterhood is celebrating their 50th anniversary. Read in the Voice about their plans. Helen Weinfeld, a founding member of our congregation, is being honored by the Jewish Society of SWFL on January 12. On January 21, The Temple is showing the film, The J Street Challenge, with a discussion led by our clergy. We are offering education programs, both youth and adult, and bringing nationally renowned educator Dr. Stephen Berk to the Naples area. Coming up on February 14, A Scholar in Song is being presented at Temple Shalom featuring Josh Nelson and Neshama Carlebach.

Many other activities fill the calendar from January through May. Our members, including our Board members, have taken active roles in our programming, fundraising, worship, education, and social action projects. Information about these activities can be accessed in the monthly Voice, the weekly e-mails, our Facebook page, and the Shabbat Shalom handout at Shabbat services. Many of the activities and programs are open to the community. Temple Shalom operates as a partner with the other Jewish and non-Jewish organizations in SW Florida.

All of the programs and activities are only possible because of the generosity in time and dollars of the Temple Shalom family members and other community organizations. A special thank you to all of our members who have already pledged to our Above and Beyond campaign. Our goal is to have every member participate in this campaign in whatever amount is suitable for them. As a representative of the Temple Shalom Board of Trustees, I want to thank the Jewish Federation of Collier County for their generosity in providing a thirty thousand dollar ($30,000) grant to aid in scholarships for our Temple Religious School and Preschool. The Temple Shalom students, teachers, directors, staff, clergy and members thank the Federation for their support in providing Jewish education to the Jewish community.

Be part of the activities, events, programs, and worship. This is a meaningful way to connect with others with similar interests and to develop new relationships. As the Temple Shalom One Family, we are striving toward building a community of caring and connected participants.

Jewish Federation of Collier County Alvin Becker, President Jeffrey Feld, Federation Executive Board of Trustees As a representative of Temple Shalom, I want to thank your Board of Trustees and your leadership for honoring Temple Shalom’s Religious School and Preschool with a combined grant of thirty thousand dollars ($30,000). This grant is to be used as scholarships for those families that are in financial need but still value Jewish education. As you know, Temple Shalom does not deny any person membership in the congregation, the opportunity to worship, or participation in educational programs due to financial hardships.

Our doors are open to all. Our preschoolers attend with great enthusiasm and excitement to learn new things and to meet new friends. Our religious school students begin to learn Torah and prepare for their day on the bimah as they become b’nai mitzvah and to take their place as adults in the Jewish community. Again, every child, at Temple Shalom, is entitled to that Jewish education.

Temple Shalom values their partnership with the Jewish Federation of Collier County. Your support is very much appreciated.

Have you noticed the new addition to our lobby?

There is a large cabinet, located to the left of the entrance to the hallway, with many drawers. Inside these drawers are name badges for every adult member of Temple Shalom!

These name badges were produced by the generosity of some of our members. The beautiful cabinet that houses the badges was donated by Neil Heuer and his company, Grand Woodworking.

The name badges are there for your use while you are in the building. The badges are alphabetically arranged. When you enter the building for services, programs, meetings, etc., you can locate your badge, make note of its location (drawer and location in the drawer), and wear the badge while you are in the building.

When you are leaving the building, please place the name badge in the drawer where you found it. It will be there for the next time you join us at Temple Shalom.

The One Family Team, who spearheaded this project, hope you will wear your name badge and that you will find them useful in developing relationships with our members.

Sisterhood News

I begin my article this month by thanking

the members of Temple Shalom and all those that have taken the time to wiggle off the pop tops of their soda and soup cans and send them in to Temple. They are being put to good use!

The profits from these pop tops go to the Ronald McDonald House to support their efforts for those in need.

Our 2015-2017 membership directory will be in your hands soon! A great big “Thank You” to all of the people that helped in this huge undertaking….from the ones who solicited ads to the advertisers themselves as well as all of our “Friends of the Directory” and the “Meaningful Messages.” The Directory Community gave much time and energy in the effort to produce a valuable resource for all Temple members.

The BIG NEWS is Sisterhood will be 50 years old this month!! We are celebrating with lots of style and fun, lots of good food and many surprises. By now you will have received your invitations. We have a very different evening planned where you can pick the home of

your choice for dinner thanks to so many generous people who have opened their homes for this celebration. After dinner, come to the Temple for delicious desserts, dancing and some surprises. We hope to see you all on January 24, 2015!

With Sisterhood, there’s always something going on! Another funfilled event in January takes place on Tuesday the 13th at 11:30AM when our very own Bobbi Bassewitz returns for another one woman show featuring scenes from the play The Lady With All the Answers

OUR ONE FAMILY CELEBRATES

MITZVAH DAY Sunday February 8th

If you are looking to make a difference in helping to combat hunger in our community…don’t miss Mitzvah Day on Sunday February 8th. If you want to experience a unique opportunity to make 50,000 meals with hundreds of our One Family members, young and old…don’t miss Mitzvah Day on February 8th. If you want to feel the joy of participating in a great social action event…you don’t want to miss Mitzvah Day on Sunday February 8th.

For the past seven years, Mitzvah Day has been the highlight of our efforts towards Tikun Olam, which our teaching suggests is humanity’s shared responsibility to heal, repair and transform the world. Helping to feed the hungry is one way that we can help to “heal the world.” Meals of Hope is the organization that we are partnering with again to make this event possible. They provide the food and the packaging materials and we provide the venue and the people to package the meals. The food is distributed to those in need right here in Collier County.

Our goal this year is to raise $10,000 which will enable us to pack 50,000 meals. That translates to only 20 cents per meal. Your donation of only $18.00 means 90 meals. $36.00 will help us make 180 meals and for $72.00…360 meals!

We need to collect your donations immediately so that the supplies can be purchased by Meals of Hope. You can donate by calling the Temple office at 239-455-3030 to give your credit card or you can mail a check to Temple Shalom 4630 Pine Ridge Road Naples, FL 34119 Please help us to reach our goal by contributing whatever you can towards this amazing event. Even more important than your contribution is joining us on February 8th from 9:00 to 12:00 noon and share the joy of packing these meals with our One Family and friends. Meals of Hope is one of a number of other social action events that morning. We will be decorating hats for children with cancer, collecting backpacks, school supplies and travel size toiletries for the many homeless children in Collier County and making puppets for hospital patients.

Come early at 9:00 AM for breakfast supplied by the Men’s Club. There will be an opening “Mitzvah Rally” at 9:30 AM and then we will start our projects at 10:00AM. If you have any questions please call the Temple office at (239) 455-3030.

Blood Drive on Mitzvah Day, Sunday, February 8th

Most people, when they learn that Temple Shalom is having its annual Blood Drive, understand the need and want to help. Every hour people’s loved ones receive donated blood right here in Collier County. Your blood donation may save the life of your family member, your friend, or your neighbor.

Our rabbis teach us that when you save one life, it’s as if you saved the whole world. Donating blood is one of the best ways to fulfill a mitzvah (commandment) to save a life. On Sunday, February 8th between 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. the Community Blood Center Bloodmobile will be in the Temple parking lot. Please consider participating in fulfilling this mitzvah.

There is no upper age limit and teens as young as 16 can donate with parental permission. Chances are that you can donate even if you take medication. To learn more about donating or to see if you qualify, check out the Community Blood Center website, www.givebloodcbc.org.

JEWISH HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF SOUTHWEST FLORIDA INAUGURAL EVENT January is Florida Jewish History month. The first recorded Jews in Florida came to Pensacola in 1763. In 1940, there were about 5,000 Jews in Miami, yet there is no formal record of Jews in 1940’s Collier County.

But one person among us got here in 1954.

The JEWISH HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF SOUTHWEST FLORIDA proudly presents its inaugural event, honoring longtime Naples resident and founding member of Temple Shalom, Naples Jewish pioneer, Helen Weinfeld.

The presentation will include the premiere of a half-hour educational documentary from Helen’s testimony on the society’s record, introduced by Collier County Curator of Education, Naomi Goren.

The Weinfeld family’s fascinating story of being one of only several Jewish families in Naples and the road to formation of what now is the oldest congregation in Collier County are inseparable, so it is most befitting that the inaugural event will take place at Temple Shalom, on Monday, January 12, 2015 at 7PM. Light refreshments will be served. This is a FREE community-wide event.

Contributions made to the various Temple Shalom funds are wonderful ways to show your appreciation of family and friends, to celebrate happy occasions and to honor the memories of loved ones. We suggest a minimum donation of chai ($18.00). With a minimum donation of $18.00, a notice of your gifts will be sent to the honoree and mention will be published monthly in The Voice.

Operations

General Fund: Donations used for operating expenses.

Tree of Life: Each ‘Rock’ and ‘Star of David’ is a donation of $540.00; each ‘Leaf ’ is $240.00. The contribution must be received in its entirety before engraving is ordered.

Burn The Mortgage Fund: Established by Gerry and Pearl Sugarman to reduce payment of any existing mortgage.

Religious School

Endowment

Religious School Enrichment Fund: Donations augment the Religious School budget to enrich the education of our children.

Scholar In-Residence Endowment Fund: Supports the endowment established by Shirley and Henry Kraus. This fund enables Temple Shalom to bring visiting scholars to the Temple as an educational benefit to the membership.

Religious School: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for Jewish learning in both Sunday and Hebrew Schools.

Polster Religious School Scholarship Fund: To purchase or supplement Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Ben Calmenson Fund: Donations will be used to create sponsorships to send children to attend Camp Coleman.

Rabbi Abraham Shusterman Children's Center Memorial Fund: To support our Religious School and Preschool.

Sisterhood Religious School Scholarship Fund: To provide Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Memorial Fund: Donations made in honor of a loved one who has passed.

Joseph S. Weinfeld Faculty Development Fund: Donations support both curriculum and teaching skill enrichment activities for Sunday and Hebrew School teachers.

William Freschel Kiddush Fund: All donations help provide Kiddush Lunch each Saturday following worship services.

A $150 donation is considered to be a sponsorship to honor a special someone or occasion.

Youth Activities Fund: Donations provide financial support for children of our congregation to attend Camp Coleman, to take part in regional/national youth conventions, and to experience a summer in Israel.

Prayerbook Fund: The new minimum contributions to purchase a plaque for Shabbat and High Holiday Books: $50.00 / Pentateuch & Haftarah books: $100.00

Preschool

Flower Fund: Provides Bimah flowers each Shabbat. A $150.00 donation is considered to be a sponsorship in memory or in honor of a special someone or occasion.

Preschool Enrichment Fund: The enhancement of curriculum, educational programs and experiences.

Mitzvah Baskets: A $100.00 donation will purchase several hundred dollars of food for JFCS. Dr. Philip & Shirley Gilbert Music Fund: Donations are used for the enhancement of music at Temple Shalom.

Preschool Fund: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for the Preschool.

Arby Lipman Children's Library: Children and adolescent books and magazine subscriptions, and supplies are purchased.

Jack and Charlotte Ward Family Children's Music Shelf: Audio and video musical tapes for children.

Endowment Fund: Donations help to secure the future, enrich the programs and provide for emergency needs of the congregation.

The Herbert & Ruth Abramson Fund: To supplement the general operating fund and to provide enrichment for Temple functions.

Clergy/Leadership

Rabbi Miller’s Discretionary Fund: For tzedakah, charitable purposes, and general enhancement of the Rabbi's work.

Cantor Azu's Discretionary Fund: For tzedakah, charitable purposes, and general enhancement of the Cantor's work.

Leadership Fund: Donations are used for the enhancement and enrichment of leadership programs at Temple Shalom.

Library

Rabbi James & Jane Perman Library: Books, magazine subscriptions and supplies are purchased.

Social Action

David and Lillian Thalenfeld Fund for Social Justice: Provides support for Temple participation in social justice events and activities.

Oneg Shabbat: Contact Sandy Stone (Oct. 15 to May 15) or Evelyn Cole (May 16 to Oct. 14) for sponsorship in celebration of an event or to honor someone.

This fund is administered by Temple Shalom Sisterhood.

Berk is the Henry and Sally Schaffer Professor of Holocaust and Jewish studies at Union College in Schenectady, New York. He is the former Chair of the Department of History, Director of the Program in Russia and East European Studies and helps advise the Hillel organization at Union.

The 2015 Sunday School for Adults is about explaining ourselves. Our Rabbi Emeritus, James Perman, will demonstrate ways to explain our core Jewish beliefs to others… to skeptics or seekers, to Christian neighbors, to our children, to anyone.

The first session on February 22nd covers the best, most important Jewish ideas, the essential core beliefs of Judaism. The second on March 1st covers modern Jewish practice. We’ll see how what we do reflects what we believe.

When we learn to clearly explain our beliefs and practices, we come to a deeper understanding of who we are as Jews. The talks are at 10:30 — 11:30, free of charge and open to the public. Bring your neighbors. Bring your friends. Bring your questions.
