From Rabbi Miller “Shoot for the moon, and even if you miss you will land among the stars.” Commonly attributed to singer, composer and band leader Les Brown, this quote aptly captures the next two months at Temple Shalom. We reached as high as we could, and have landed among the stars. Still riding the waves from the conclusion of Our Torah, we begin 2014 with three key events.

January 24-26th is our Weekend of Justice. Ruth Messinger, President of American Jewish World Service (AJWS), begins the weekend as our Scholar in Residence. Over the last ten years Ruth became a shining star for social justice by leading the campaign to end genocide in the Darfur region of the Sudan, combating global hunger, and now protecting women’s rights around the globe. Thanks to the generosity of Henry and Shirley Kraus, Ruth will be addressing the congregation on Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th. Fittingly, the next day, January 26th, is our annual Mitzvah Day. Inspired by Ruth’s message, we will act upon our responsibility to be God’s partners in making the world whole and holy through Meals of Hope, preparing cosmetics and school supplies for homeless school children, as well as several other activities.

One week later a second star will be shining at Temple Shalom.

Over the course of the High Holy Days, you heard me reference Relational Judaism as the blueprint for our future – strengthening our congregation by focusing on our relationships with one another.

On February 2nd, Dr. Ron Wolfson, the author of Relational Judaism will be here! Ron will kick-off our One Family initiative that morning – giving us a vision for our next two years. We want to have all of our Temple Family present to be part of this exciting day – as we all have a stake in shaping the Temple Shalom of tomorrow.

Our star filled Winter takes a musical turn with the “From Bimah to Broadway” event on February 23rd. Cantor Azu has assembled an allstar cast of cantorial talent that will delight your ears. Their voices will move our spirits through a joyful night of song. It is sure to be a night we will be talking about for years to come.

We may not have reached the moon, but we will be spending the next few months surrounded by the stars. As we begin this new secular year of 2014, may these stars illumine our hearts and minds, while guiding us to a year full of blessing.

SOMETHING’S COMING

“Something’s coming and it’s going to be great.” Borrowing from Bernstein and Sondheim’s landmark West Side Story, something great is coming.

On Sunday, February 23rd, Temple Shalom is presenting a special concert featuring Temple Shalom’s Cantor Donna Azu and four remarkable, ordained cantors from all parts of the country to perform an evening of song, From Bimah to Broadway.

The talented roster includes Cantors Carrie Barry from Wellington, Florida; Aaron Kaplan and Daniel Mutlu from Houston, Texas; and Star Trompeter from Chappaqua, New York.

Jewish musical offerings include “Yerushalim Shel Zahav” and “Modim Anachnu Lach.” Favorite Broadway musical selections include, “For Good” from the hit musical Wicked, Bernstein’s dazzling “Glitter and Be Gay” from Candid, and Gershwin’s haunting “Summertime” from Porgy and Bess. Also on the program are two crowd pleasers-- Bocelli’s stirring “Time to Say Goodbye” and Gershwin’s “Love is Here to Stay.” This is a concert you’ll long remember.

From Cantor Azu With a little help from my friends, From Bimah to Broadway presented at Temple Shalom on Sunday February 23rd at 7pm promises to be a joyous concert featuring a unique blend of musical styles including liturgical, classical and popular songs from around the world. That evening you will be treated to gorgeous and sometimes humorous renditions from Broadway to Israeli songs, from secular to religious music, from Jewish to not so Jewish, presented by the some of the best Cantorial voices from around the country! In addition to myself, performers included Cantor’s Carrie Barry, Aaron Kaplan, Daniel Mutlu, and Star Trompeter.

Cantor Carrie Barry had the distinction of being a National Merit Scholar and attended Vassar College where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Religion with both General and Departmental Honors.

Upon graduation, Cantor Barry entered our Reform Movement’s seminary, Hebrew Union CollegeJewish Institute of Religion Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music, in New York City. She spent her first year of study at the College-Institute campus in Jerusalem and during the remaining four years of Cantorial training, she spent a portion of her time serving congregations in New Jersey and Illinois as a student cantor. Cantor Barry is currently serving as Cantor at Temple Beth Torah in Wellington, FL. Cantor Aaron Kaplan began his Cantorial studies at Hebrew Union College School of Sacred Music in 2004 where he was honored to be the recipient of the Congregation Emanu-El of the City of New York Scholarship Award for his entire Cantorial education at HUC. He has received many other distinquished awards, including the Jacob and Malvina Lutwak Cantorial Memorial Prize and The Women of Reform Judaism Cantorial Prize. Aaron has sung in concerts in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and in various venues in America. He has performed as a chorister along-side Cantor Yitzhak Meir Helfgott and the New York Philharmonic at the Metropolitan Opera House.

Cantor Daniel Mutlu received a Bachelor’s Degree in Vocal Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. He also earned a Masters in Sacred Music from the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York City and was ordained as a cantor in 2008. Cantor Mutlu has sung with the Park East Synagogue choir under the direction of Azi Schwartz, Mordechai Sobol and Matthew Lazar both at Sabbath services and concerts at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, Avery Fisher Hall and the Metropolitan Opera House. Cantor Mutlu may be heard on the Naxos 8 disc set of The Complete Haydn Masses. He is featured in the recording as a tenor soloist with the Trinity Choir and Rebel Baroque Orchestra under the direction of Owen Burdick and Jane Glover. Most recently, Cantor Mutlu was a featured soloist and chorister on the Grammy nominated album, Israel in Egypt, with the Trinity Choir conducted by Julian Wachner. In 2011, Cantor Mutlu was called to serve Congregation Beth Israel in Houston, Texas. In Houston Daniel has sung as a soloist with the Houston Symphony, the Houston Bach Society, the Houston Chamber Choir and Ars Lyrica.

Cantor Star Trompeter is the Cantor of Temple Beth El of Northern Westchester. A native of Roanoke, Virginia, Cantor Trompeter attended the University of Virginia, receiving a BA in Music and French language and literature. A classically trained singer, she earned a Master of Music degree with a concentration in Opera from the New England Conservatory in Boston, MA. While there, she performed in operas both at the Conservatory and at Harvard University. Before attending Hebrew Union College, Cantor Trompeter lived and worked in San Francisco, CA. where she sang with a Gilbert and Sullivan Troupe in the Bay Area and interned at Congregation Emanu-El of San Francisco. Cantor Trompeter was ordained from the Hebrew Union College, School of Sacred Music, in 2010.

From the Executive Director

The generation of random numbers is too important to be left to chance.

Each day each of us is surrounded by numbers. In my house the alarm goes off at 5:45 am, the school bus arrives at 6;30 am, and the numberfilled day begins. We all count out spoonfuls of coffee, worry about our weight, calculate miles per gallon, figure out how much we’re saving because those fabulous shoes are 15% off, and compute an appropriate tip for the wait staff.

By the time you read this, the Temple will be neck-deep in the monthslong process of preparing an entirely different set of numbers. It’s budget time! Each department is reviewing last year’s numbers, analyzing this year’s numbers, and formulating next year’s numbers.

We carefully and methodically review revenues and expenses; thoughtfully and realistically assess the number of members, students, and affiliates; and systematically appraise and evaluate each and every line item. It is a painstaking process, and one that we take very seriously.

The success of the budgeting process is very much dependent on the knowledge, expertise, and assistance of a small group of dedicated volunteers. Under the guidance of our Financial Secretary Scott Newman and our Treasurer Rob Nossen, the Finance Committee members are unsung heroes. Individual members of the Finance Committee meet with department heads to gain an understanding of each department’s workings, and assist in identifying upcoming budgetary requirements. Their combined knowledge and experience is invaluable, and is a critical part of the process.

A preliminary budget, once approved by the Finance Committee, is then recommended to the Board of Trustees. The Board makes a thorough review, and changes are made if necessary. The next step is yours…the proposed budget is sent out to the congregation for review, and you are invited to attend a Town Hall meeting to address your financial questions. The proposed budget is then voted on at the Annual Meeting.

We continue to do our utmost to maximize our efficiency, and provide the very highest quality services and programming, and we thank you for your on-going support of and commitment to Temple Shalom.

President’s Message

by Yale Freeman As I watched the seemingly endless stream of people pile onto the Bimah when Eric Meyer, emcee for the Our Torah Crowning Ceremony, called for all volunteers to come up – I was filled with hope, excitement and gratitude. Nearly 75 people squeezed onto the bimah – it was wall-towall! All of these volunteers had contributed their time and energy to this project and made it a success. This is what becoming One Family is all about – all of us participating in whatever way we can, because together we can achieve anything and everything we set our minds to.

When I saw our staff, leadership and teachers scribing the last letter, I was overcome with an incredible sense that we are moving in the right direction. That we are working together. And, most of all, that we all want our Temple to be meaningful in our lives.

I am amazed and gratified that more than 900 individuals, couples, families, havurot, and organizations from Temple Shalom, as well as the Naples Jewish community and our greater community, scribed a letter and left a legacy.

Thank you for being a part of it!

To everyone who made a financial contribution, large or small – thank you from the bottom of my heart. These funds are needed and appreciated as we continue to move forward in a defined direction with a defined plan to create the Temple Shalom that we want and need.

My primary focus for the next several months is to closely examine our financial situation and implement the decision of the Board of Trustees to set up a long-term fundraising plan of action. Over the High Holidays, I reached out to our members to help in this financial analysis and planning. I once again make this request. Just as the Our Torah Project was successful due to the involvement of so many volunteers, so too will we be able to better manage our financial issues with volunteers such as yourselves helping to review our finances. Temple Shalom…I’m so glad to be part of this family and so fortunate to serve as one of its leaders. I wish you all the best for this New Year and may we all continue to work together and continue to shape our Temple community into One Family.

Congregational Relations News

RON WOLFSON AND “RELATIONAL JUDAISM” COMING TO TEMPLE SHALOM On February 2, 2014, Dr. Ron Wolfson, author of Relational Judaism: Using the Power of Relationships to Transform the Jewish Community, will be the keynote speaker at Temple Shalom’s One Family kick-off lunch.

Congregations across North America are recognizing the need to make a cultural shift in their approach to meeting the needs of their members. A growing awareness of societal and environment changes – changes in family configurations, changes in expectations, and changes in the way we communicate – require new responses in temple functioning. Dr. Wolfson maintains if a temple is to remain relevant in the lives of its members, a focus on the expressed needs and

interests of the members and facilitation of relationships of members with each other, with Torah, and with Judaism is needed.

Dr. Wolfson’s book provides insights into what it means to be a relational congregation and the principles involved. On February 2 he will share with us the excitement this approach is creating in the Reform Jewish world. As Dr. Ron Wolfson states in his book, “The purpose of a synagogue is to be a sacred community of people whose lives are enriched with meaning, purpose, connectedness, and a relationship with God through prayer, study, acts of social justice, healing, and loving-kindness…our goal is..to transform membership into a covenantal relationship between the individual and the spiritual community…”

From the Religious School Director

by Caren Plotkin Kibud av va-eim – honoring one’s father and mother. What can it mean to honor? Sometimes honoring one’s parent is not easy. The word kibud, honor, has as its root kaveid – heavy; it can be a burden to honor another. In honoring those who have given us life or sustenance, we honor the Source of Life. (Elyse D. Frishman) As parents, we want the best for our children. We teach our children to be honest, to respect others and to live by the teachings of the Torah. We do this by role modeling and showing our children that our positive actions speak louder than works. Yet, we sometimes wonder how much our children are really absorbing and understanding of the Jewish values we work so hard to try to instill in them.

Recently, I experienced an example of “honoring your mother and father” in the truest form. One of my younger students came to see me right before Thanksgiving. She wanted to buy a copy of our prayer

book “Mishkan Tefilah” to give to her mom for Chanukah. She asked me how much it was, and when I told her it cost $30 I clearly thought that she would change her mind. After all, it was a large amount of money for a young child to spend on a present. Her response touched my heart. She said, “Mrs. Plotkin, I really want to give my mom a prayer book to have for her very own. When she was young, she wasn’t able to become a Bat Mitzvah or to have a prayer book like me. I’ve been saving my money, and I have enough for this very special gift to honor my mom. And please, keep this secret between us because it’s a surprise!”

I was touched by this child’s thoughtfulness, and can just imagine her mother’s heart swelling with joyful pride at this act of love. This gift demonstrated the connection and love that she had for her mother as well as her connection to her own identity as a Jew. She felt so proud of her heritage that she wanted to share it with her mom with this gift of a prayer book. She really understood the meaning of the Fifth Commandment - Honor your mother and father.

Preschool on Parade

by Seyla Cohen, Preschool Director A brand new year! With the holidays behind us, it’s that time of the year when the children at Temple Shalom Preschool begin to settle into their familiar surroundings. Here at TSP, their home-away-from-home, students enjoy returning to their classrooms, their comfort zone. Parents and students seem to sigh with relief when the hustle and bustle of end of the year activities are behind them. It feels good to calm down and revert back to a more routine life style with more defined schedules. Children strive on structure so returning to a more predictable routine does them well.

TSP is proud of our focus on Mitzvot and Tikkun Olam. We ended the year with our annual Trike-A-Thon to support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and raised over $1,200 this year! This week long program teaches children riding toy safety. Each day a different lesson is taught by teachers through illustrated adventures. The program culminated at the end of the week when preschool children rode their bikes and practiced the rules they learned while their parents were cheering for them.

One of the goals of Temple Shalom Preschool is to teach the children, from an early age, the importance of Mitzvot, giving back to society.

Mitzvah is defined as a religious duty or obligation and one of the commandments of Jewish religious law. Essentially it means performing an act of kindness. Trike-A-Thon is just one of many Mitzvah activities participated in throughout the school year by both children and parents of the Preschool. The curriculum helps us

instill in children the importance of Tikkun Olam. Through donor’s generosity, children are able to help desperately ill children at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital by raising money for research and treatments.

We are all anticipating Mitzvah Day to be held January 26th. This is an annual event in which Temple and Preschool families help give back to the Naples community. As in the past, we will be helping homeless children of Collier County by collecting toiletries and providing them with much needed necessities. Another favorite activity is baking doggie biscuits for the Humane Society. The children love to make the biscuit dough and shape it and decorated for the animals they love. In addition, preschoolers will be visiting nursing homes in the area, providing entertainment! Such deeds give meaning to values so important to instill in children at a tender age. Mitzvah Day brings joy, satisfaction, and a sense of accomplishment to both parents and children. What a nice way to begin the New Year.

In January we welcome our newest students - our Lil’ Cubs - little ones who missed the cut-off and turned two after October. We are so excited that they have begun their first school experience. Through the help and tender loving care of Miss Jane and her assistant Christy, our new Lil’ Cubs class is thriving and kids begin to learn all about independence. It’s hard at first to leave Mommy and Daddy, but once they catch on to the routine, they become our newest endearing family members.

Sisterhood News

by Sandy Stone, Sisterhood President Sisterhood would like to wish all of you a very happy holiday season and a very happy and healthy new year. We all hope the year 2014 will bring peace and accord for the entire world.

December was a very busy month for all of us at Sisterhood and Temple Shalom. December 4 was our annual Chanukah Tea and over 70 people were there from all the Jewish organizations in Naples. we were royally entertained by the adorable Preschool children and then a wonderful musical program complete with a sing-along by Jane Galler and Cantor Donna Azu, Everyone enjoyed the delightful desserts and the event was a truly beautiful afternoon where our members could interact with people we don’t see every day.

On Sunday, December 8 our Temple welcomed throngs of members as part of the Crowning Ceremony of our Torah Project. The afternoon was a memorable one, as we marched around the Torah 7 times and the final scribing was accomplished. To complete the wonderful, exciting day a delicious lunch was served. The new Torah is something we all have been eagerly looking forward to and now the day has arrived.

We at Sisterhood have planned an unusual month for January 2014.

Sometime during the next month you will receive a way to relax. Stay as casual as you wish and still help Sisterhood, which in turn will help Temple Shalom. We present our “STAY AT HOME TEA,” where you will receive a tea bag and an invitation to enjoy it while hopefully

generously replying with a donation.

If you are looking for something really different, (educational different and including children) keep reading! On Monday, January 20, Sisterhood had arranged a tour of the “Shy Wolf Sanctuary.” The Sanctuary is a very small place and is run by volunteers. We will meet at the Temple at 8:40 a.m. and carpool. We are limited to 30 at the most, so if you are interested please call me at 597-1553 ASAP. This event will have a first come first serve policy. There is no charge, but donations will be much appreciated!

For February 12 we have planned an evening program that I know you will be excited about so save the date and watch your Voice for details!

Our Book Bag meets again on January 16. This is a wonderful group of well-read women with lots to say about each book reviewed. In January the book is “The Interestings” by Meg Wolitzer. We select very popular and informative books, so meet with us in the Perman Library at 1:30 p.m. on the third Thursday of the month.

MEALS OF HOPE Table after table will be set up in the Multi-Purpose Room, and the Meals of Hope assembly line will be back in place!

For several hours we will work together, young and old, to package thousands of meals. Each year our hard work sustains hundreds of children who receive free or reduced meals at school during the year and have nowhere to turn when school is not in session.

Please remember that we have to PAY for the food we package, and that 100% of your donation is spent on the food. There are absolutely no administrative fees.

The Shelter for Abused Women & Children works to end family violence, and to advocate for, empower, and assist those who have been victims. The Shelter appreciates your donations of NEW toys, personal and household items to assist the many people who have turned to the Shelter for guidance and security.

SAVE THOSE TRAVEL SIZE COSMETICS! Temple Shalom Preschool is collecting travel size cosmetics for donation to Student Services for Homeless Children, a program through Collier County Public Schools dedicated to the care and education of homeless children.

If you travel over the winter holidays, save as many hotel cosmetics as you can! Or, each time you visit Target, CVS, Walgreens, WalMart, etc., during your holiday shopping, pick up 2 or 3 extra tubes of travel toothpaste, deodorant or shampoo to donate. It will add up! Please look for donation boxes around the Temple. Thank you so much for your participation! The homeless children of Collier County greatly appreciate it!

SCHOOL SUPPLIES FOR HOMELESS SCHOOL CHILDREN: During this school year, over 1,000 children in Collier County have been identified as homeless. Throughout the year, these children must have their school supplies replenished. We are in desperate need of school supplies – backbags, paper, notebooks, pens, pencils, crayons, etc.

Financial Corner

by Scott Newman, Financial Secretary and Rob Nossen, Treasurer With the start of 2014, we thought it would be good time to initiate a new column in the Voice to give you a brief rundown on our financial status. We will use this column periodically to update you as the year progresses.

We ended FY 2013 with a $5,000 deficit, however as you are aware, the approved 2014 Temple budget reflects a $100,000 deficit. In the Spring of last year, The Finance Committee and Board reviewed anticipated dues and tuition income, as well as our projected fundraising income.

It was concluded that we could realistically raise approximately $350,000 through fundraising in FY 2014, even though our needs approached $450,000. Accordingly, for the sake of transparency, it was agreed to show a $100,000 deficit for the coming year. Please note that we have ample funds to cover the deficit while we implement programs to prevent further shortfalls. The Temple’s net worth is in

Our financial statements for the five months ending November 2013 are on target for the year. Our expenses are in line with the budget and, assuming we achieve the $150,000 Above & Beyond goal, we should not exceed the projected deficit.

Bring One Give One Please take an empty bag. Fill it with non-perishable foodstuff when you shop the BOGO specials at the supermarket each week. Bring the filled bag to Temple Shalom and we will see that it fills the JFCS food pantry shelves every week.

Temple Shalom and Jewish Family & Community Services expand on their relational Judaism to include those who are food insecure. When you go food shopping and see those weekly specials that we all know as BOGO (Buy One Get One) take advantage of the special and place the free non-perishable foodstuff in this nondisposable shopping bag that we will give to you to fill on a weekly basis. Bring the filled bag back to Temple either during the week or when you come to Shabbat services. We will then give you an empty bag to refill. Maxine and Harvey Brenner have volunteered to deliver the filled bags to JFCS weekly to help keep the shelves of the food pantry full. Remember, BOGO not only means Buy One Get One. It also means to Bring One Give One for the JFCS food pantry.

Contributions to Temple Shalom Showing We Care

Contributions made to the various Temple Shalom funds are wonderful ways to show your appreciation of family and friends, to celebrate happy occasions and to honor the memories of loved ones. We suggest a minimum donation of chai ($18.00). With a minimum donation of $18.00, a notice of your gifts will be sent to the honoree and mention will be published monthly in The Voice.

Operations

General Fund: Donations used for operating expenses.

Tree of Life: Each ‘Rock’ and ‘Star of David’ is a donation of $540.00; each ‘Leaf ’ is $240.00. The contribution must be received in its entirety before engraving is ordered.

Burn The Mortgage Fund: Established by Gerry and Pearl Sugarman to reduce payment of any existing mortgage.

Religious School

Endowment

Religious School Enrichment Fund: Donations augment the Religious School budget to enrich the education of our children.

Scholar In-Residence Endowment Fund: Supports the endowment established by Shirley and Henry Kraus. This fund enables Temple Shalom to bring visiting scholars to the Temple as an educational benefit to the membership.

Religious School: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for Jewish learning in both Sunday and Hebrew Schools.

Polster Religious School Scholarship Fund: To purchase or supplement Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Ben Calmenson Fund: Donations will be used to create sponsorships to send children to attend Camp Coleman.

Rabbi Abraham Shusterman Children's Center Memorial Fund: To support our Religious School and Preschool.

Sisterhood Religious School Scholarship Fund: To provide Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Memorial Fund: Donations made in honor of a loved one who has passed.

Joseph S. Weinfeld Faculty Development Fund: Donations support both curriculum and teaching skill enrichment activities for Sunday and Hebrew School teachers.

William Freschel Kiddush Fund: All donations help provide Kiddush Lunch each Saturday following worship services.

A $150 donation is considered to be a sponsorship to honor a special someone or occasion.

Youth Activities Fund: Donations provide financial support for children of our congregation to attend Camp Coleman, to take part in regional/national youth conventions, and to experience a summer in Israel.

Prayerbook Fund The new minimum contributions to purchase a plaque are Shabbat and High Holiday Books: $50.00 / Pentateuch & Haftarah books: $100.00

Preschool

Flower Fund: Provides Bimah flowers each Shabbat. A $150.00 donation is considered to be a sponsorship in memory or in honor of a special someone or occasion.

Preschool Enrichment Fund: The enhancement of curriculum, educational programs and experiences.

Mitzvah Baskets: A $100.00 donation will purchase several hundred dollars of food for JFCS. Dr. Philip & Shirley Gilbert Music Fund: Donations are used for the enhancement of music at Temple Shalom.

Preschool Fund: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for the Preschool.

Arby Lipman Children's Library: Children and adolescent books and magazine subscriptions, and supplies are purchased.

Jack and Charlotte Ward Family Children's Music Shelf: Audio and video musical tapes for children.

Endowment Fund: Donations help to secure the future, enrich the programs and provide for emergency needs of the congregation.

The Herbert & Ruth Abramson Fund: To supplement the general operating fund and to provide enrichment for Temple functions.

Clergy/Leadership

Rabbi Miller’s Discretionary Fund: For tzedakah, charitable purposes, and general enhancement of the Rabbi's work.

Cantor Azu's Discretionary Fund: For tzedakah, charitable purposes, and general enhancement of the Cantor's work.

Leadership Fund: Donations are used for the enhancement and enrichment of leadership programs at Temple Shalom.

Library

Rabbi James & Jane Perman Library: Books, magazine subscriptions and supplies are purchased.

Social Action

David and Lillian Thalenfeld Fund for Social Justice: Provides support for Temple participation in social justice events and activities.

Oneg Shabbat: Contact Sandy Stone (Oct. 15 to May 15) or Evelyn Cole (May 16 to Oct. 14) for sponsorship in celebration of an event or to honor someone.
