A New Logo for Temple Shalom!

The Marketing and Branding Committee is proud to share the new logo design for Temple Shalom. After several months of meetings and working with a designer, the logo (above) was selected for our use. The logo includes aspects of our ancient heritage as well as our contemporary character.

This logo is inherently and uniquely descriptive of Temple Shalom and representative of our tag line: one family, many connections. We hope you agree with our committee that the new logo is crisp, fresh, and most of all, serves as a meaningful representation of our Temple family.

• The graphic display features the Mogen David (Star of David), a central symbol of our Jewish faith.

• The circle of 12 hands is reminiscent of the 12 tribes of Israel.

• The circle arrangement of the hands is suggestive of our “One Family.”

• The color variety suggests our diversity and inclusiveness.

• The connectedness of the hands represents the many connections among our members, working together to create our community.

• D e b b i e Z v ib l em an, President As we start the year, we make resolutions for business and our personal life. We set goals and objectives that we hope to meet. In December your Temple board met for a retreat. We reviewed our Mission Statement and wanted to make sure that objectives we developed work within that framework. There are 5 key categories: financial (which includes fundraising and endowment), teaching and following Jewish values, membership and engagement, and leadership and operations.

We will develop objectives which will guide us and allow us to better meet the needs of our congregation.

As we depend on volunteers to be on the board, be on

committees and run events, think about what you would like to do in the coming year to be engaged. Do you have expertise that you would like to share with us? Are you interested in being part of the Board, fundraising, marketing, social action or membership? If you have a passion, we probably have a committee that you can serve on.

Nearly a month has passed since the awesome experience of the Shabbat of Solidarity. Around 1500 people filled our sanctuary, social hall, lobby and beyond.

Cars were parked alongside Pine Ridge for a half mile in either direction. The community responded to our call for action and united to stand together in the aftermath of the vandalism that marred our Temple Shalom sign. I encourage you to watch the livestream archive on our website to hear again the uplifting messages delivered by faith and community leaders from our bimah.

steps to ensure that the hope and awe we experienced at the Shabbat of Solidarity was not a one-time event, but a recurring theme in our congregation. It is time to immerse ourselves in learning about our history and understanding current events, while also rededicating ourselves in our work of tikkun olam.

As I shared that night, Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel described his experience of marching alongside Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as “praying with my feet.” We prayed with our feet at the Shabbat of Solidarity. Our joint prayers that night focused on creating a community in which hatred can find no purchase, and a society in which the seeds of injustice cannot flourish and bloom. We prayed for the strength and courage necessary to continue standing up to hate and injustice. As well as the wisdom needed to build bridges that connect us, while tearing down the walls that divide us.

On February 26th, we will have our annual Mitzvah Day. Highlighted by our 50,000 Meals of Hope, dozens of backpacks and cosmetics for homeless students, this year’s event will include an off-site project in the larger community, as well as a volunteer sign-up for ongoing acts of tikkun olam. Mitzvah Day is the spark that ignites our work for making our world whole and holy.

Since that time we have witnessed the beautiful lights of Chanukah – a celebration of miracles and hope in the face of darkness. Each year we light our candles – that the sense of joy first felt by the ancient Maccabees will live on in each generation. Similarly, we must now take

A noted scholar and historian, Dr. Berk will speak to us about the rise of modern anti-Semitism, current Jewish events, and provide an understanding for how our past informs our future.

During his last appearance at Temple Shalom more than 450 people filled the sanctuary to capacity.

Through all of these efforts, we pray that we will continue to build on the sense of community created by the Shabbat of Solidarity, as well as brighten our community for many months and years to come.

Cantor Donna Azu FEELING JOY IN 2017 I originally thought I would entitle this article “Finding Joy in the Secular New Year,” and then thought that it was more important to get to the result of actually feeling joy. This feeling has to be triggered by thinking about what really brings us joy. It means stepping back and taking a fresh look at how you spend your time and which things you do that are both meaningful and joyful and perhaps not costly. Can you identify those moments you feel joyful? Is it being surrounded by family and really listening to what they have to say?

Is it cooking and sharing a meal with close friends? Is it seeing the wonder and discovery and growth of your children? Is the Temple Shalom community comforting during a time of mourning or illness?

Is it knowing that you are not alone to face the ups and downs on the journey of this life? Is it noticing the phases of the moon and the fact that the Jewish calendar is tied to the lunar calendar? Is it holding the hand of your spouse or child? Is it in enjoying the beaches and beauty surrounding us in Naples? Is it entering your apartment or house and being thankful that you have a place you call “home?”

The ancient world of Plato and Aristotle believed in the power of

music to affect our thoughts and behavior. The Greek doctrine of ethos was based on the notion that music affects character. I can feel joy while singing some liturgical or secular music, while conducting or singing with our choirs, and while praying with a community. Singing or listening to music, whether in communal worship or a choir, can bring joyful moments. Singing forces us to breathe, let go of tensions, express our emotions, and listen. Music and prayer have the power to heal. As you create vocalized sound, you have the opportunity to reinterpret and recreate the music in the moment.

So I encourage you to be open to feeling joy. Communal worship and/or singing in a choir gives you the opportunity to create a sacred space in time and the realization that you are not alone in walking the ups and downs of life. So carve out time to celebrate Shabbat and “refresh” yourself by coming to Shabbat services, joining our adult choir, and meeting new people from the Temple Shalom community.

Take the time to plan and create joyful and meaningful moments in your life. The Adult Choir rehearses on select Thursday evenings from 6:30-7:30pm. I guarantee that you will have joyful and meaningful experience. Hear Ye! Hear Ye! The Hearing Loop is Now Available for Use in our Sanctuary!

This Loop is designed to be used with hearing aids that are equipped with a telecoil (T-switch). A wire loop, installed under the carpet around the stationary seats in our Sanctuary, is connected directly to the microphones. The wire transmits sound electromagnetically to the telecoil in personal hearing aids.

This system provides quality sound using the personalized settings of individual hearing aids.

For those who do not have hearing aids or whose hearing aids do not have a telecoil, headsets compatible with the Loop system are available on the table just inside of the sanctuary doors.

There will be an orientation program on Sunday morning,

January 22, at 11:45. A local ASHA Board Certified Audiologist, Darlene Ballew, Aud.D, will be available to answer questions and assist with determining if your personal hearing aids are compatible with the Loop.

This important addition to our Temple technology has been made possible by the generosity of our Temple Board of Trustees, Sisterhood, Men’s Club, Stu Warshauer, Bernie and Bobbie Lublin, Iris Shur, Bernie Lashinsky, and Neil and Tussy Shnider. Much thanks to all!

Health-Safety Day/Open House Once again Temple Shalom Preschool is hosting its annual HealthSafety Day/Open House on Sunday, January 15th from 11am to 2pm.

This is a very special activity-packed day-long program educating our young citizens about health and safety within our community. Various community helpers come to present awareness about their individual departments. The children enjoy seeing fire trucks up close and personal. EMT shows up in their ambulances for the children to have a clear view of what is inside its vehicles, and the police department brings their mascot, McGruff the Crime Dog, teaching the children about combating crime in the area. Water safety, a major concern for parents in the area, is reinforced. Domestic animal services is another presenter along with Smokey the Bear from the Department

of Forestry. Not to mention the rock climbing wall and the bounce house brings a lot of fun and excitement to the children as well as riding the ponies around our campus. Our Health-Safety Day is an event open to the general public and is a welcome and wellreceived program for the community each year.

SAVE THE DATE! We are very excited to announce that on Feb 3rd @ 9:30 we will be having Award winning recording Artist Ellen Allard performing for all the children of our community.

This concert will be free of charge and it will be open to the whole community. Ellen Allard is a much-loved performer for children and young families. Her concerts are high energy, interactive and get kids and grownups singing and moving and dancing! This concert was made possible with the generous grant we received from the Jewish Federation of Collier County, Cantor Azu’s discretionary fund and other generous donations.

Dr. Anna Salomon, RJE -

With the start of the new calendar year, we have a lot of great things to look forward to for adult education. In our Melton school, we began our very first Core course. This Core program is what Melton is most famous for, providing an in-depth look at varied Jewish topics ranging from life and calendar cycle to traditions and religious practice.

Our Core courses will span fifteen weeks a year over a three year period. This year’s course is full and we’ve started a wait list for next year’s cohort already! Our Holocaust through Diaries and Memoirs Melton course begins in February. Registration closes soon and the course is almost full.

Our Scholar in Residence, Dr. Stephen Berk, will join us January 27-29. With a wide range of expertise and engaging presentations, Dr. Berk will bring a myriad of learning to the community. We’ll begin with a lecture on what we know now, 71 years after the liberation of Auschwitz.

We have fabulous speakers coming throughout the season, including Dr. Zuhdi Jasser – the President and founder of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy on February 22.

Our Religious School students are partnering with the Federation and the Holocaust Museum to create an experience for our sixth graders to meet and interview Holocaust survivors about their lives. This will culminate in a moving retelling of the stories at the Yom Hashoah service.

Three years ago Cantor Donna Azu invited four of her talented colleagues to join her in presenting an evening of music. Those who attended were entertained by a memorable concert that included cantorial pieces, Israeli folk songs, Broadway show tunes, and operatic arias.

Due to the success of that event and in answer to numerous requests, Cantor Azu and her friends will present an encore performance on March 5, 2017. This much anticipated performance will include a new musical program and two new voices. Cantors Carrie Barry from Coral Springs, Florida and Daniel Mutlu of Houston, Texas will return, while William Tiep of Cardiff, California and Mary Rebecca Thomas of Charlotte, North Carolina will be making their Naples debut. All five performers are ordained cantors with superb voices and a wide experience in many musical genres. “Encore” will once again provide an unforgettable listening experience.

The concert will be Temple Shalom’s major fundraiser for 2017.

Estate Planning is Much More Than a Will…or a Revocable Trust Clients are typically worried that “I have not done my will yet”. A will is but one of the five or six basic estate planning documents that everyone, and we do mean everyone, should have. They are: durable power of attorney, healthcare surrogate designation, living will, preneed guardian designation and will. Some will also have a revocable trust, but after you are dead the revocable trust serves the same function as the will to distribute your property to your beneficiaries.

In general your will is for everyone else but you. Remember, if your will has legal significance that means you are not here anymore. On the other hand, the durable power of attorney, healthcare surrogate designation, living will, and preneed guardian designation are for you while you are alive. These documents are your opportunity to get some certainty regarding who will perform certain functions for you when you cannot do them for yourself.

The durable power of attorney is your designation of an agent who can act on your behalf with regard to your business decisions. The agent can sign your name as if they were you. That also means that a power of attorney in the wrong hands is a license to steal.

The health care surrogate designation is your designation of an agent who can make medical decisions for you if you cannot give informed consent. Maybe you hit your head on the windshield, are unconscious and cannot give informed consent. Or as we see more often, your capacity is severely diminished due to dementia or alzheimer’s and you can no longer give informed consent to medical decisions.

The living will is your right to decline life prolonging procedures if you are in an irreversible coma, a persistent vegetative state or have a terminal condition that treatment would serve only to artifi­cially prolong the dying process.

The preneed guardian designation is your designation of a guardian for you if you are adjudicated to lack capacity and a guardian needs to be appointed for you to exercise your rights regarding yourself. When you are adjudicated incapacitated, some or all of your rights are taken from you and some of those rights are then vested in the guardian.

With a completed endowment gift of The rights that could be taken from $10,000 or more you will become a you include the right to contract, member of our Eternal Light Society. to marry, to vote, to have a driver’s license, to determine your residence, to determine social environment and other aspects of your life, to travel and to manage your assets.

Can you think of a more important function than who will make health care decisions for you if you cannot and who is the right person who knows you inside and out to know and then do what you would do if you could do it yourself? All of us will become incapacitated one day.

For some of us incapacity will come with our last breath. However, for some, it will come months or many years sooner. When you lack capacity or have severely diminished capacity, the durable power of attorney or health care surrogate designation will be your and your family’s best friend as they are a means to get things done with a less restrictive alternative than guardianship and by the individual you selected.

You can leave things to chance or get certainty as to outcome. Most prefer certainty as to outcome.

Prayerbook Fund: Purchase of prayerbooks and Torah commentaries. To dedicate: Prayerbooks - $50 Torah commentary - $100 High Holy Day prayerbooks - $108 - each set

Religious School

Religious School Fund: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for Jewish learning in both Sunday and Hebrew Schools.

Scholar In Residence Endowment Fund: Supports the endowment established by Shirley and Henry Kraus. This fund enables Temple Shalom to bring visiting scholars to the Temple as an educational benefit to the membership.

Religious School Enrichment Fund: Donations augment the Religious School budget to enrich the education of our children.

The Low Family Endowment Fund: To secure the future of Temple Shalom and Reform Judaism in Southwest Florida.

Polster Religious School Scholarship Fund: To supplement Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

The Herbert & Ruth Abramson Fund: To supplement the general operating fund and to provide enrichment for Temple functions.

Ben Calmenson Fund: Donations will be used to create sponsorships to send children to attend Camp Coleman.

The Janet & Howard Solot Endowment Fund: For general charitable uses and purposes.

Endowment Fund: Donations help to secure the future, enrich the programs and provide for emergency needs of the congregation.

Rabbi Abraham Shusterman Children's Center Memorial Fund: To support our Religious School and Preschool.

Clergy/Leadership

Memorial Fund: Donations made in honor of a loved one who has passed.

Joseph S. Weinfeld Faculty Development Fund: Donations support both curriculum and teaching skill enrichment activities for Sunday and Hebrew School teachers.

Cantor Azu's Discretionary Fund: For tzedakah, charitable purposes and general enhancement of the Cantor's work.

William Freschel Kiddush Fund: All donations help provide Kiddush Lunch each Saturday following worship services.

A $150 donation is considered to be a sponsorship to honor a special someone or occasion.

Youth Activities Fund: Donations provide financial support for children of our congregation to attend Camp Coleman, to take part in regional/national youth conventions, and to experience a summer in Israel.

Capital Reserve: Maintain and enhance buildings and grounds.

Worship

Flower Fund: Provides Bimah flowers each Shabbat. A $100.00 donation is considered to be a sponsorship in memory or in honor of a special someone or occasion.

Mitzvah Baskets Fund: A $100.00 donation will purchase several hundred dollars of food for JFCS. Dr. Philip & Shirley Gilbert Music Fund: Donations are used for the enhancement of music at Temple Shalom.

Preschool

Preschool Fund: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for the Preschool.

Preschool Enrichment Fund: The enhancement of curriculum, educational programs and experiences.

Ronald McDonald House recycles collected pop tops from beverage cans and uses the proceeds to benefit the children staying there.

The Sisterhood will collect the pop tops and send them to Ronald McDonald House. You can drop them off at Temple Shalom and place them in the Sisterhood mailbox.
