O

ne of the best perks of living in Naples, Florida is that we get to take advantage of our beautiful surroundings year round! Just 25 miles away lies the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. If you’ve never been, Corkscrew Sanctuary occupies approximately 13,000 acres in the heart of the Corkscrew Watershed part of the Western Everglades. It is primarily composed of wetlands. These include the largest remaining virgin bald cypress forest in the world (approximately 700 acres), which is the site of the largest nesting colony of federally endangered wood storks in the nation. In addition to the wood stork, Corkscrew provides an important habitat for numerous other federal and state listed species, including the Florida panther, American alligator, gopher tortoise, Florida sandhill crane, limpkin, roseate spoonbill, snowy egret, tricolored heron, white ibis, Big Cypress fox squirrel and the Florida black bear. Several rare plants are also found here, most notably the ghost orchid.

hile we do not have direct evidence, one imagines that the author of Ecclesiastes offered those words as a source of comfort, consolation and hope for people living in a chaotic world. They were not written with the knowledge that the Byrds would transform them into a hit single, and that we would find it difficult to read the original text without adding the phrase, “Turn, turn, turn.”

After living in Naples now for almost six years, I read the opening line differently – there is not enough time for everything, for in Naples there is one Season for every activity under the heavens. Lasting only a few months, from January until April, Season in Naples is crammed with more activities, programs, and events than one person could possibly attend! My colleagues outside of South Florida still have difficulty comprehending the rhythm of life here, and cannot appreciate the flurry of activity.

Even amidst a sea of benefit lunches and world-class speakers, there are some exciting times that shine on our Temple Shalom calendar. There is a time for building and healing the world on January 24th with our annual Mitzvah Day event. More than 300 people participate annually in this exciting endeavor as we pack meals with Meals of Hope, provide school supplies and toiletries for homeless children in our schools, offer thanksgiving to our first responders, and bring blessings to children battling cancer. All are welcome – and we encourage you to bring along a friend to share this exciting day of tikkun olam, repairing our world.

There are times for learning – with the exciting new Melton program beginning this month. January 29th, 30th and 31st we will have a time for wisdom and understanding with our Scholar-in-Residence, Dr. Daniel Matt, one of the world’s leading authorities on Kabbalah and Jewish mysticism. With over a dozen published books, Dr. Matt has been featured in Time Magazine and has appeared on National Public Radio and the History Channel. Dr. Matt’s latest work, translating and annotating the Zohar, the masterpiece of Kabbalah, earned him a National Jewish Book Award and a Koret Jewish Book Award. The Koret award called his translation “a monumental contribution to the history of Jewish thought.”

These experiences are just the start of our Season! In February we will have more times for learning with Edwin Black and Dr. Amy-Jill Levine. In March we will have a time for fun at the Purim Spiel & Purim Carnival. And there will be a time for dancing and celebration at Dream On, March 26th.

This is the Season for every activity under the heavens.

May your experiences in the next few months be times for joy, moments for inspiration, and opportunities for sharing blessings.

Rabbi Miller will be participating in a clergy panel “Forgiveness in a Wounded World” This event is presented as one of the programs related to The Sunflower by Simon Wiesenthal, the One Book Southwest Florida selection.

David Prager, The Simon Wiesenthal Center’s Southern Region Representative, will moderate the clergy panel. The clergy will give a short overview of how forgiveness is viewed and taught in their religious denominations and take questions from the moderator. Members of the audience will be able to submit questions in the final half hour of the program.

In January we observe the Hebrew month of Sh’vat, traditionally associated with the holiday of Tu’BiShvat, “The New Year of the Trees”, Jewish Arbor Day. The holiday is observed on the 15th (tu) of the Hebrew month of Sh'vat. The holiday has become a tree-planting festival in Israel, in which Israelis and Jews around the world plant trees in honor or in memory of loved ones and friends. Tu BiSh'vat is not mentioned in the Torah and according to scholars, the holiday was originally an agricultural festival, corresponding to the beginning of spring in Israel. In the 17th century, Kabbalists created a ritual for Tu BiSh'vat that is similar to a Passover Seder. Today, many Jews hold a modern version of the Tu BiSh'vat Seder each year.

Mitzvah Day! January 24, 2016 9AM to 12PM Together…We Can Repair the World

I

t is hard to believe that nearly one year ago more than 350 people participated in packing 50,000 meals for Meals of Hope, right here in Collier County. Yes, you read that right…50,000 meals! These meals are distributed by its accredited food bank partners and they offer more than nutrition.To a child who is dealing with the stress and insecurity of not knowing how or when they will receive their next meal, these meals provide a bit of hope to carry them through another day.

We also prepared dozens of backpacks and collected toiletries for homeless students, cared for animals, thanked our first responders, prepared purple bags full of love for children battling cancer and puppets for hospital patients.

This year we want to do even more! We want to touch as many lives as possible, and make Mitzvah Day a memorable experience for everyone at Temple Shalom.

Our goal this year is to raise $10,000 which will enable us to pack 50,000 meals. That translates to only 20 cents per meal.

Your donation of only $18.00 means 90 meals. $36.00 will help us make 180 meals and for $72.00…360 meals! Here’s how you can contribute…you can mail your check made out to Temple Shalom and write “Mitzvah Day” in the memo line or you can call the Temple office with your credit card number.

We’re also very excited to add the Gift of Life to our Mitzvah Day projects. It is said that saving one life is like saving the entire world. Gift of Life is committed to curing blood cancer through bone marrow donation. Its goal is to find a match for any patient in need, whenever they may need one. Anyone from age 18-45 can be a potential donor. All that’s required is a simple cheek swab available at a station during Mitzvah Day. If you are a match you may be able to save someone’s life! Save those clothes you are ready to donate of and bring them to Temple Shalom starting the first week in January or on Mitzvah Day. Temple Shalom Preschool is again collecting travel size toiletries for donation to Student Services for Homeless Children, a program through Collier County Public Schools dedicated to the care and education of homeless children.

If you travel over the winter holidays, save as many hotel cosmetics as you can! Also, each time you visit Target, CVS, Walgreens, WalMart, etc., during your holiday shopping, pick up 2 or 3 extra tubes of travel toothpaste, deodorant or shampoo to donate. It will add up! Scholar-in-Residence Weekend with Prof. Daniel C. Matt January 29th - 31st From Kabbalah to the Big Bang: Ancient Wisdom and Contemporary Spirituality Daniel Matt, one of the world’s leading authorities on Kabbalah, will introduce us to some of the central themes of the Jewish mystical tradition. On Friday night he will focus on the concept of Shekhinah (the feminine aspect of God) in the context of Shabbat.

In his subsequent presentations, he will show how the Zohar interprets and reimagines the Torah, and how the mystical tradition enables us to discover God in the material world. He will also address the question of “God and the Big Bang,” exploring parallels between Kabbalah and contemporary cosmology, and seeking to find harmony between science and spirituality.

Preschool News

brand new year! With the holidays behind us, it’s that time of the year when the children at Temple Shalom Preschool begin to settle into their familiar surroundings. Here at TSP, their home-awayfrom-home, students enjoy returning to their classrooms, their comfort zone. Parents, as well students, seem to sigh with relief when the hustle and bustle of end of the year activities are behind them. It feels good to calm down and revert back to a more Seyla Cohen routine life style with more defined schedules. Children thrive on structure so returning to a more predictable Preschool routine is beneficial to them.

Director One of the goals of Temple Shalom Preschool is to teach the children, from an early age, the importance of Mitzvah, giving back to society. Mitzvah is defined as a religious duty or obligation and one of the commandments of Jewish religious law.

We are all getting ready for Mitzvah Day on January 24th. This is an annual event in which temple and preschool families help give back to the Naples community. As in the past, we will be helping homeless children of Collier County by collecting toiletries and providing them with much needed necessities. Another favorite activity is baking doggie biscuits for the Humane Society. The children love to make the biscuit dough, shape it and decorate it for the adorable animals. In addition, we will be collecting items for “The Purple Bag Project”. This is a project to help those children going through chemotherapy and delivers chemo care bags to brighten their day and make the process a little easier for them. The TSP children will be making puppets to put in the bags with all the other items collected.

Such deeds give meaning to values so important to instill in children at a tender age. Mitzvah Day brings joy, satisfaction, and a sense of accomplishment to both parents and children. What a nice way to begin the New Year.

In January, we welcome our newest students; our Lil’ Cubs. Those little ones who missed the cut-off, have begun their first school experience. Through the help and tender loving care of Miss Jane, our new Lil’ Cubs class is thriving and kids begin to learn all about independence. It’s hard at first to leave Mommy and Daddy, but once they catch on to the routine, they become our newest endearing family members.

Our Temple Shalom children entertained those in attendance with Chanukah songs under the direction of Jane Galler. They were fantastic! Members of Temple Shalom represented our Temple in the latke eating contest. Temple members Neil Heuer and Sammy Sissman clinched the winning spots!

WE NEED YOU Together…We Can Repair the World Mitzvah Day is fast approaching on Sunday January 24th. It is a wonderful way to perform Tikkun Olam which literally means, “repairing the world.’ While that one day is very special, we at Temple Shalom, are performing Tikkun Olam throughout the year.

We’ve recently formed the Tikkun Olam Council to help coordinate the many Temple social action/social justice activities already underway as well as making available new opportunities to fulfill our Jewish responsibilities to make the world whole, holy and a better place. We now need your passion and your ideas for social action and social justice…right here in Collier County and beyond.

On Sunday January 10th from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM we will be holding our first Temple-wide Tikkun Olam Council meeting.

Come and join us and help us decide what new projects we want to undertake to repair our world. We’ll have coffee and cookies and we’ll share our vision on how we can make a better world for us all.

Brown Bag Lunch Series “The Jewish School of Paris 1905-1945” Senior For’em of Temple Shalom, in partnership with Temple Shalom Adult Education and Mix & Mingle of the Jewish Federation, is proud to host a three part lunch and learn series presented by Ellaine H. Rosen, “The Jewish School of Paris 1905-1945.”

As a connoisseur of Jewish Art, Ellaine has appeared several times on television, has published a book and scholarly articles on Jewish art that appeared in prestigious journals such as the Journal of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America.

Sampling the Psalms — Where Religion Meets Poetry A Note from Rabbi Perman: This year we’ll consider a number of selections from the Bible’s Book of Psalms. They are my personal favorites because of the unique ways in which they address our deepest, most personal needs and desires. Why Psalms? Aside from the most familiar Twenty-Third Psalm that begins, “The Lord is My Shepherd,” most of us aren’t that familiar with this amazing literary treasure. But we ought to be. It is our heritage. It is both useful and easily accessible. Many Jews and Christians consider it a user’s manual for life.

This is the twenty-second year for the Sunday School for Adults, a most suitable time because this topic favors maturity. The material we’ll be looking at is definitely for grownups. It’s in the Bible but it’s not Bible stories. It is written for people who have life experience, who have faced and continue to face the never-ending challenges of living. It’s not about easy answers — it’s about the foundational sources of support and encouragement, strength and hope. It’s the fine distinction between knowledge and wisdom.

Through the efforts of our volunteer Temple Chefs $1,500 was raised for Meals of Hope for the January 24th Mitzvah Day event. At .20 per meal (actual cost of each meal) the Temple Chefs have been able to raise sufficient funds to produce 7,500 meals for those in need.

And we did this with only 4 Shabbat Dinners!

here do we start? It’s about our relationship with this place called “Our Temple”. We are both deeply involved in Temple life, all the way back to the year 2000 when for eight years Lori served as the Temple’s Executive Director, and fast forward to the present, where for the past eight years Ed has been serving as Men’s Club President.

And what happened in these last 16 years? So much. Let’s start with friendships. Temple Shalom is where we have made our deepest friendships in this town; yes, our Havurah, but not just our Havurah, our Temple family of friends. They are such a big part of our lives and we would be bereft without the love of each and every one of them.

Then, lets move on to things a bit more personal. When you look at the bimah, you might see our Rabbi, Cantor and Music Director and lecterns and chairs, etc. We see our children’s chuppas. Yes, both our children married on the bimah of Temple Shalom.

When you look at the base of the stairs in front of the Bimah, you might see the base of the stairs. We see Lori’s Dad’s casket.

Yes, we’ve had a family funeral at Temple Shalom.

When you look at the children in the sanctuary, you might see children. We see our three grandchildren all of whom were named here.

When you see every inch of the school building and administrative offices, you might see classrooms and offices, but Lori sees the first brick, the architectural drawings, blood, sweat and even some tears.

When you see the large print prayer books, the Tribute Garden, the grill, the Religious School students traveling and rocking and rolling during concerts, you might see just those. Ed see’s every Men’s Club Board meeting and hears every discussion and labors over every decision.

We are four generations of Temple members at the same time. Lori and Ed Cohen; Kyle, Rachel, Eli and Sarah Cohen; Dana, Mike and Jayda Wexler, and Sue Flato.

So, why do we give? We give because Temple is interconnected with our lives so intricately. We’ve been enriched by it, and we’ve enriched it. It’s that two way street of devotion. That’s why we give.

Did you know that even if the value of your stocks has dropped, many of your investments are likely still worth more today than what you originally paid for them? And if you sell, you would pay capital gains taxes at a maximum rate of 20 percent (15 percent for those at or above the 25 percent income tax bracket but below the 39.6 percent bracket; waived for those below the 25 percent bracket). But by using appreciated securities you’ve owned for more than one year as a charitable gift, you will receive two tax benefits: 1. You are entitled to a federal income tax deduction based on the current fair market value of the securities, regardless of their lower original cost.

2. You will be exempt from paying capital gains taxes on any increase in value—taxes you would pay if you were to sell the securities.

How to make a gift of stock If you have the physical securities: • hand-deliver them to the Temple, attention: Endowment Chair; or • mail us the stocks and stock power separately.

If you don’t have possession of the physical securities: • instruct your broker to electronically transfer your intended shares; and • ask your broker to notify us once the transfer is complete.

Ken and Marian are in their mid-forties with 2 school-aged children. In September 2004 they bought 200 shares of Apple (AAPL) stock for $35.50 ($7,100 purchase price). In June 2014 they had 400 shares (due to a stock split) valued at $650 per share (worth $260,000). They made a gift to their Temple Endowment Fund of 100 shares, which originally cost them $1775 and was now worth $65,000. By gifting the stock instead of selling it, paying taxes and then donating the balance, they saved $15,470 in capital gains taxes. They also got an income tax deduction of $65,000.

A charitable contribution of long-term appreciated securities — i.e. stocks, bonds and/or mutual funds that have realized significant appreciation over time — is one of the most tax-efficient of all ways to give. This method of giving has become increasingly popular in recent years: The two key advantages: •

Any long-term appreciated securities with unrealized gains (meaning they were purchased over a year ago, and have a current value greater than their original cost) may be donated to a public charity and a tax deduction taken for the full fair market value of the securities — up to 30% of the donor's adjusted gross income.

Since the securities are donated rather than sold, capital gains taxes from selling the securities no longer apply. The more appreciation the securities have, the greater the tax savings will be.

Contributions to Temple Shalom funds are wonderful ways to show your appreciation of family and friends, to celebrate happy occasions and to honor the memories of loved ones. We suggest a minimum donation of chai ($18.00). With a minimum donation of chai, a notice of your gift will be sent to the honoree and mention will be published monthly in The Voice.

Operations

General Fund: Donations used for operating expenses.

Tree of Life: Each ‘Rock’ and ‘Star of David’ is a donation of $540.00; each ‘Leaf ’ is $240.00. The contribution must be received in its entirety before engraving is ordered.

Burn The Mortgage Fund: Established by Gerry and Pearl Sugarman to reduce payment of any existing mortgage.

Worship

Memorial Fund: Donations made in honor of a loved one who has passed.

William Freschel Kiddush Fund: All donations help provide Kiddush Lunch each Saturday following worship services.
