RABBI’S MESSAGE
Rabbi
Adam F. Miller The Hidden Treasures at Shalom A tale is told of a man named Abraham who awakens one night with a start from a vivid dream. In his vision, Abraham discovers buried treasure under a nearby bridge. The dream felt so real, that Abraham decides to seek out the treasure. Reaching the bridge, Abraham starts to climb over the wall when a town guard calls out to stop him. Pulling Abraham back from the ledge, the guard asks what he is doing. Hesitating for a moment, Abraham tells him the truth about his dream. The guard laughs, replying, “If I believed in dreams, then I would heed my own. That in the home of a man named Abraham there is a secret compartment in the floor under his table which holds a bag full of coins and jewels.” Surprised by the guards reply, Abraham quickly apologizes and runs back to his home. Moving his table out of the way, he notices for the first time a discolored section in the wood floor. With only a little effort, he pries the section of flooring away to reveal a cloth bag, full of coins and jewels. A treasure that was under his nose the whole time. We may not have found a bag of treasure, but we have all had that moment when we notice for the first time something special or unique that had been present all along. We feel the same sense of awe and wonder experienced by Moses when he stops to notice a single burning bush in the middle of the Sinai wilderness. Perhaps it occurred when we saw a familiar room from a new angle; came across a forgotten memento in our home; or found an unknown space in a place we know well. Here at Temple Shalom, we have many hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Our wonderful and warm Saturday morning services in the chapel offer community and connection. At Mitzvah Day, on January 12th, one discovers multiple opportunities to positively impact our community that include making Meals of Hope, providing toiletries and school supplies for homeless students, and donating blood. Wise Aging, Jewish Spirituality and other adult education programs expand one’s horizons. Cantor Evan Kent will musically engage us at the end of this month through the artist in residence program, and our scholar in residence, Rabbi Andrea Weiss joins us in March to inspire us through learning. Our Tikkun Olam Council empowers our congregation to repair the world, and in the coming months will bring new dialogue and connections with the African-American community. The joyful wonder of Temple Shalom is that we have too many gems to list in one place – all waiting to be found. Come in and discover for yourself the treasures of Temple Shalom. And if you need help in your quest, we are here to guide you along the way. L’Shalom, Rabbi Adam F. Miller

CANTOR’S MESSAGE
Cantor
Donna Azu
I am thrilled to share that Cantor Evan Kent will be joining us at Temple Shalom January 24-26, as our first Artist-in-Residence, generously sponsored by Paula Brody and Merrill Hassenfeld. Many, many years ago as I was finishing up college, I came to the decision that I no longer wanted to pursue a career as a professional singer. However, I knew I wanted a career that combined my passions of both music and education. A friend suggested that I should look into the Cantorate. Although I grew up in a congregation with a cantor, I didn’t know much about the profession. I did some research and came across a program at the Hebrew Union College in Los Angeles. The program was geared towards cantorial soloists and those interested in becoming cantors. The instructor of that course was Cantor Evan Kent. Over the next three years, I attended that class once a week. During our time together I learned about liturgy, Jewish music, the role of a cantor and so much more. Cantor Kent was such a wonderful teacher and mentor, bringing every new subject alive. He was incredibly supportive of me applying to the five-year Masters and Ordination program at the Hebrew Union College in New York City and gave me such wonderful advice along the way. Cantor Kent received his ordination as a cantor and his Masters in Sacred Music from Hebrew Union College in New York. He also received his Bachelor’s Degree from the Manhattan School of Music and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the City University of New York. He was the cantor of Temple Isaiah in Los Angeles twenty-five years before he made Aliyah to Israel in 2013. In 2014, he earned his Doctorate in Music Education from Boston University. Cantor Kent is currently on the faculty of Hebrew Union College in Jerusalem where he teaches liturgy 4
and sacred music. He was also a member of the editorial committee for the new Reform High Holy Days prayerbook, Mishkan HaNefesh. While living in Jerusalem, Cantor Kent has starred in Jerusalem productions of “Guys and Dolls,” the musical drama “Next to Normal,” “Avenue Q,” “Singin’ in the Rain,” Sondheim’s “Assassins,” “Cabaret,” and “She Loves Me.” He also portrayed Yitzchak Rabin in a new musical drama, “November” that dramatized the last week of Rabin’s life. During his time with us at Temple Shalom, Cantor Kent will co-lead the Friday night service and give a d’var Torah on “Jews as Consummate Storytellers”. He will lead a Saturday morning Torah study sharing insights from the week’s parashah using the perspective of the storyteller. On Saturday night he will present his one man show, “Shards: Putting the Pieces Together.” He will share with us stories of his grandparents’ immigration to the United States at the beginning of the 20th century interwoven with his own tales of his Aliyah (immigration to Israel) just a few years ago. To cap off the weekend, Cantor Kent will lead an adult workshop on telling our own stories, why our individual and collective stories are important, and why sharing these stories with younger generations is valuable. This a weekend you do not want to miss! Please refer to page 11 for the dates and times of all these wonderful programs. L’Shalom, Cantor Donna Azu

LEADERSHIP MESSAGE
Executive Director Deborah R. Fidel
“Do You Need Any Help?” These five words are music to any Executive Director’s ears! Temple Shalom is a growing, thriving temple with a wide and growing menu of activities, classes and worship opportunities, thanks in large part to the help and hard work of the many people who volunteer their time with us. Our cup runneth over with experienced lay leaders and volunteers from other communities. Opportunities abound for anyone who wants to roll up his or her sleeves and get to work!
Michael Weinstein
At we transition into 2020, I would like to thank one very special volunteer who has made a difference here with his sweet personality and big smile. Until last month, Michael Weinstein, son of Hetty and Scott Weinstein, assisted our music teacher, Jane Galler at Religious School on Sunday mornings. Michael deals with some fairly challenging health issues on a daily basis, but his special circumstances don’t stop him from showing up and pitching in with all his heart. I sat down with him recently to talk to him about his experience in the Religious School. I asked him what he does on Sunday mornings. He said that he asks Jane, “Do you need any help?” when her hands are full, before carrying her books and music stand for her, among other tasks. Michael says that volunteering on Sunday mornings makes him feel happy. He enjoys seeing the children, singing and helping Miss Jane. “She’s like Mary Poppins – sweet, funny, and happy all the time,” he said. Jane told me that she and the children will definitely miss him. “Michael was a wonderful assistant and is a wonderful friend to everyone. The children just love him!” Michael has also helped out on the High Holy Days, greeting members and visitors with a hearty handshake and a “Shana Tova.” I asked Michael, “Why do you like volunteering at Temple Shalom?” Not one to mince words, he said, “It’s good.”Indeed. I would also like to recognize and honor this year’s Above & Beyond Campaign chairs, Lori and Ed Cohen. Thanks to their hard work, our members’ generosity and everyone who participated in the match during the last days of the campaign, I am thrilled to say that we have surpassed our goal! Your gifts tell us that you value Jewish education, Jewish community and Jewish continuity. Thank you, Michael, Ed, Lori and all the people who support Temple Shalom with your time and your treasure. Without YOU, there is no US!! L’Shalom, Deborah R. Fidel, Executive Director

RABBI EDUCATOR’S MESSAGE
Rabbi Educator Ariel Boxman
I hope everyone has begun 2020 with happiness, health and peace. On January 1 many of us made New Years Resolutions. Resolutions tend to be made concerning weight loss, job performance, financial stability, etc. However, while all these resolutions are worthy, I would like to challenge you to add a resolution to your list. A resolution based on happiness, and in particular, happiness in our children. Below is a list of some ideas and suggestions on how to help our kiddos smile a little more! Cheers to a happier 2020! • Get happy yourself! In raising happy children, we must work on ourselves and increase our own happiness and emotional wellbeing. This includes practicing daily gratitude, choosing to see good in the world and believe it or not, doing daily exercise! Children watch everything we do and we can be their best role models. Remember: happy parent = happy child! • Expect effort, not perfection: All too often we praise children for good grades or outstanding achievements in sports. While praise is wonderful and definitely encouraged, parents must also praise children for good effort. Effort is what ultimately counts and what will help our children to feel good about themselves and their abilities. When your child gets home from school, ask them about their day and what was most enjoyable. If they choose to talk about lunch instead of their math test, so be it! • Teach AND model emotional intelligence: Children who learn from an early age how to effectively express themselves and their emotions will have healthier relationships and more success in life. When your child is struggling with anxiety, frustration or anger, it is recommended to do the following “empathize, label, and validate”. For more info on this read: https://tinyurl.com/s2n28f8 • More playtime: Yes, it is as simple as it sounds. Research
shows that children who spend more time playing and interacting with friends live (not via phone or computer) are happier and more content. Today’s kids are so overscheduled with sports, extra-curriculars and homework that they have little to no time to be kids. Schedule in “playtime” and you will start to see a less anxious and less stressed-out kid! • Teach gratitude: Remind your child daily of all he/she has to be grateful for. Whether it is the gooey and delicious mac-n-cheese he had for lunch or the high-five she received from her gymnastics coach, we all have at least something, small or large to be grateful for. Make a gratitude jar and each week have a member of the family submit a slip of paper with something they are grateful for. At the end of the Jewish year, right before Rosh Hashanah, open up the box and read through all the wonderful things that have happened to you as a family! Teach gratitude, teach happiness. Wishing everyone a healthy and happy new year! L’Shalom Rabbi Boxman

Happy January from BBYO! Naples BBYO teens came together with teens from all over North Florida Region (NFR) for FallCon (Fall Convention) in Ellenton, FL, November 15-17. FallCon included teen-led Jewish education and identity programming over the course of three days. We celebrated Shabbat, gathered around the bonfire for smores, learned about Jewish identity and culture globally, participated in AZAA and BBGG Sports programming, and so much more. What truly made the convention so unique is the diversity of teens represented throughout our region and their mutual passion for exploring what Judaism means to them.
On the horizon for January we have J-Serve, BBYO’s International Day of Service. On Sunday, February 2, Naples and Ft. Myers BBYO will be taking part in the Touch Down Run 5k. We will be running to raise awareness for the Children’s Cancer Network, NFR’s stand-up cause for 2019-20. Join us on February 2 at 6:15am at North Collier Regional Park. You can register in advance by going to bit.ly/touchdownbbyo. The Naples BBYO is in the process of preparing their spring term calendar. To be added to our email list and receive updates about BBYO programming, simply email Jessica Zimmerman at jesszimmerman@bbyo.org. We hope to hear from you and welcome you to BBYO Naples.
With all this talk about the convention, you might be thinking, when is the next convention and how can I participate in the fun? Well, lucky for you, NFR’s next regional convention, MIT/AIT LTI (Member in Training/Aleph in Training Leadership Training Institute) is taking place the weekend of January 17-19. MIT/AIT LTI not only provides leadership training to all teens in attendance, it also specifically looks to welcome new members to the fold with designated programming to introduce them to BBYO. Reach out to me directly if you are interested in joining Naples BBYO at convention. In November, Temple Shalom hosted Alan Goodis for a special Family Shabbat Experience. BBYO had a lovely time celebrating Shabbat with the community. And as a special bonus, after the main service, BBYO had a private song session with Alan. Not only did we jam with Alan, but some of our very talented teens had the opportunity to showcase their skills.
Naples BBYO gathered for a special Shabbat experience at Temple Shalom’s Family Shabbat Experience with Alan Goodis.

CONNECT WITH US Butterflies of Hope & Rememberance, January 26 By Carole J Greene The year 1945 saw the end of World War II and the liberation of Nazi concentration and death camps. 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of these significant events in history. A year-long initiative titled “Butterflies of Hope & Remembrance” provides unique experiences to pay tribute to myriad victims of World War II and to recall the lives saved in the liberation of the camps. Special programs offer education about the Holocaust and genocide—horrors destined to be repeated if humanity forgets the lessons history teaches us. Temple Shalom will host one of the “Butterflies of Hope & Remembrance” programs at 2:00pm on Sunday, January 26, which is the day before the official International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The Temple will screen the movie “The Boys of Terezin.” This documentary tells the story of a secret journal penned by boys aged 13 to 16 living—just barely—in the Terezin concentration camp. Life there was brutal, cut short by starvation, disease and frigid conditions—plus regular deportations to death camps. Of the 15,000 children sent to Terezin, fewer than 1,000 were alive by war’s end. American musician Lori Laitman composed an oratorio, “Vedem,” Czech for “In the Lead,” that illuminates the boys’ homesickness, their fatigue and hunger, anger at their imprisonment - along with their humor and courage. Members of Seattle’s acclaimed Northwest Boychoir, as they rehearsed this oratorio, learned what the Holocaust’s genocide meant to teens their same age. In a poignant finale of the world premiere musical performance, four survivors - the boys of Terezin - reunite after 65 years. The documentary film brings these disparate elements together in a tribute to courage and idealism that sustained these Terezin-imprisoned teens during the darkest time of their lives. The film is ideal for teenaged viewers to learn vital lessons we hope Holocaust education can teach them. A special program of “Vedem” songs will be performed by professional musicians from FGCU and The Naples Philharmonic Orchestra. To RSVP, visit holocaustmuseumswfl.org.

Gabriela Sissman 1.18.2020
Adam is a seventh grader at North Naples Middle School. He is the son of Paul and Amanda Dorio, and grandson of Temple members, Gayle and Martin Dorio. Adam has an older brother, Isaac (16), a younger sister, Ava (9), a Rhodesian Ridgeback named Stella, and a hamster named Mötley. Adam loves music, especially playing the trombone in his school’s concert band and jazz band. He will also be playing in the CCPS Honor Band in January. Adam plays baseball, and is an overall sports enthusiast, with the New York Yankees as his favorite baseball team, and The Ohio State Buckeyes as his favorite college football team (not to mention his love of their marching band). Adam is an avid reader, mostly enjoying books based on WWII, and he also enjoys math. Adam is an adventurous young man, always up for a new experience; he’s excited to become a Bar Mitzvah.

MEN’S CLUB We have had a very successful 2019, having achieved many goals toward our mission: promoting friendship and charitable giving for our Temple, community and Israel. Here are just some of our accomplishments this past year:
Men’s Club President Ed Cohen
• Provided iPads for children of Religious School and Preschool • Purchased mezuzot • Purchased 20 tallitot for the congregation • Purchased new folding tables for the MPR • Sponsor for Gala 2019 • Major sponsor for JNF film series • Major contributor for Temple video streaming • Contributor to Above & Beyond Campaign • Funder for numerous Religious School events
• Gifted Kiddush cups to each B’nai Mitzvah student • Major supporter for Mitzvah Day “Kids Against Hunger” • Provided gowns and Bibles for Confirmation Class • Supported local Holocaust Museum, Jewish Family and Community Services, and Jewish Federation of Collier County • Golf Outing, tennis events and Alamo Range group activity • Monday Night Football at the Temple
We eagerly look forward to the upcoming events. Some of which are highlighted below:
This past year the Men’s Club supported the efforts of Max Klein (high school student and Temple Shalom member) to attend BBYO’s Chapter Leadership Training Camp. We • Supporting Mitzvah Day 2020 (Sunday, January 12), Kids have had a very positive response to this initiative, and in Against Hunger. the future, we will work with the administration of BBYO • Providing breakfast to all Mitzvah Day participants to help identify other worthy endeavors that support and • Annual Dinner Theatre at the Broadway Palm Dinner enhance youth leadership among Jewish students within our Theatre on March 14 for the award winning show KINKY Temple community. If you have a passion for a certain activity or event and you would like to share that interest and create and chair a group Ed activity, please contact me at, edcohenpt@gmail.com Chapter Leadership Training Camp (CLTC), BBYO’s premier, hands-on leadership experience for current 9th and 10th graders, was an amazing experience for me. I learned so much in such a little amount of time. At CLTC teens are split up into “mock” chapters based on gender. I had so much fun with my mock chapter. I was saturated with information about how to be a leader not only in BBYO, but in life. Along with meeting some amazing people in Montreal, I was taught how to be a better leader in my community, and how to be a stronger president in Negev AZA in Naples. I came home with new tactics on how to reach more brothers in our community, different ways to hold the attention of a room, and some of the best ways to present a speech in front of many people. Beyond the time spent in our classrooms at CLTC, I had a total blast in song sessions with our Judaic music talent that were extremely fun and hyped. My roommate was a great guy and the staff were so interested in each one of us - they took the time to get to know us on a personal level. I am truly indebted to the Men’s Club of Temple Shalom for making my BBYO summer experience dreams become a reality. Thank you so much. - Max Klein, Golod of Negev AZA, Naples and current 10th grader at Gulf Coast High School 26
Temple Shalom thanks the Men’s Club for their support of the Above & Beyond campaign, in appreciation of Lori and Ed Cohen’s hard work as the chairs and for Ed’s dedication to the Men’s Club.

SISTERHOOD No “Guesswork” about the Success of November’s Sisterhood Luncheon
Sisterhood President
Karen Cohn
If you were fortunate enough to be at Sisterhood’s successful November luncheon, then you were delighted and privileged to hear the legendary Myra Janco Daniels. Ms. Daniels, Founder and former CEO of the Naples Philharmonic Center for the Arts, internationally accredited Woman of the Arts, and Naples’ “Grande Dame of Culture,” shared her life experiences, including many of her amazing achievements. Ms. Daniels’ story of making Naples a major cultural center was truly inspiring.
Her secret to longevity? Exercise, eat properly, and read. She challenged us to help others — not just ourselves, and left us with this final thought, “It is better to give than to get.” Sisterhood was proud to make a contribution in Ms. Daniels’ honor to the Latchkey League, her most recent endeavor, to improving the lives of Collier County’s children. Our sincere appreciation to Marcy Aizenshtat for not only planning this fabulous program, but also for being the perfect emcee. If you weren’t at this luncheon, you really missed something special!
Up close and personal with Myra Daniels.

TIKKUN OLAM
Tikkun Olam Council Chair Ken Goldstein Another New Year… What’s the Most Important Question to Ask Yourself? Not only did we just ask ourselves the most difficult questions during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, but we now have yet another new year and another opportunity to ask more tough questions about the year ahead. As I get older these questions take on new meanings for me. How many (good) years do I have left and how do I want to live, and enjoy, these remaining years? Here is a question that caught my eye; “You are celebrating your 100th birthday party - What do you cherish most?” For me, the things I cherish most are my family. Raising two wonderful kids with my wife and seeing them grow and mature are forever in my heart. Having two grandkids mean the world to me. Beyond the very personal, what I cherish most is my volunteer work at the Naples Senior Center at a dementia respite group. In addition to helping in any way I can, I spend 20 minutes or so talking about history, famous birthdays and jokes. In a small way I know that I, and each volunteer, is helping to make a difference in the lives of those with dementia as well as the caregivers that appreciate a four-hour break. What will you cherish most in the years ahead? January is a great month to see what is out there. Come to Mitzvah Day on Sunday, January 12. Become a volunteer at the Naples Senior Center or check out the United Way in both Collier and Lee Counties for more volunteer options. Help feed the hungry at Harry Chapin Food Bank or Food Angels. Attend the Day of Learning on January 19. This year’s focus is Confronting Anti-Semitism: Overcoming Hate. March with us in the MLK Parade on Monday, January 20 at Cambier Park. See the links below or, for more information, contact kengoldstein@mac.com. We invite you to join us at our monthly meetings on the third Wednesday of each month at 9:00am. https://www.jfcsswfl.org/senior-center/ https://www.foodangelscollier.org https://harrychapinfoodbank.org https://jewishnaples.org/jcdl https://www.unitedwaylee.org/volunteer/current-needs/ https://www.volunteercollier.com

TIKKUN OLAM Mitzvah Day - Sunday, January 12 9:00am - 12:00pm
Each year, Temple Shalom members came together to help end hunger by forming assembly lines and packing over 50,000 meals for those in need here in Collier County. We need everyone’s help. Are you new to the Meals of Hope project? No worries! We’ve got pleanty of “veterans” that will be happy to show you the ropes. It’s easy, fun, and a great way for our community to come together for a truly remarkable mitzvah. We need hands-on volunteers on Mitzvah Day, but in order for Meals of Hope to be a true success we need your donations as well. At just $.25 per meal, your donation of $18 would fund 72 meals. $50 buys 200 meals. For $100, 400 meals can be provided. Helps us get the ball rolling. Please send your donation to Temple Shalom with “Meals of Hope” in the memo line. You can also donate online at www.naplestemple.org/payment.php and choose Mitzvah Day Donations from the drop-down menu. Thank you!
Mitzvah Day Activities and Collections All of our Mitzvah Day activities and collections are listed below. More information can be found on the Temple Shalom website in the dropdown menu under Calendar. We start the morning at 9:00am with a delicious breakfast generously supplied by the Men’s Club before moving into the Sanctuary for our Mitzvah Day rally to get pumped up for the actvities. We look forward to seeing you on Mitzvah Day!
