CLERGY MESSAGE

Rabbi

Adam F. Miller

Crossing to Our Future The story is told of a young student on his journey home after his travels to see the world. Inspired and wanting to share his newfound knowledge, the student came to the banks of a wide river. Staring hopelessly at the great obstacle in front of him, he pondered for hours on just how to cross such a wide barrier. Just as he was about to give up his pursuit to continue his journey he saw a great teacher on the other side of the river. The young student yells over to the teacher, “Oh wise one, can you tell me how to get to the other side of this river”? The teacher ponders for a moment looks up and down the river and yells back, “My son, you are on the other side.” Ten years ago, I first arrived at Temple Shalom, along with Cantor Azu. We spent that first year investing our time and efforts to meet the congregation. Hundreds attended the open houses that I hosted. At each one, I shared my story, listened to the experiences of members, and we talked about what members hoped to see in the future. Looking back and reflecting on the answers, it seems like a wide river exists between where we once were, and where we are today. A popular topic at those meetings focused on the growth of the Jewish community and Temple Shalom. Our membership has grown over 50% in the last four years alone, and the larger community continues to grow at a rapid pace. Others spoke about wanting more engagement through adult education and programming. This year marks the sixth year of hosting the Florence Melton School for Adult learning, and our fourth year offering Wise Aging cohorts. Our havurah groups continue to grow, creating a sense of families within our larger Temple Family. I remember several conversations about Temple Shalom’s presence in the Jewish community. For many years we served as the central address for major programing across the Jewish community. Soon, the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples will join us on this campus, enhancing our visibility even further. We have come leaps and bounds in just ten years, crossing the river and expanding our world. Now, I am excited to see how much further we will go in the next ten. I will once again be hosting a series of meetings, this time under the title, “One Family Gatherings.” These gatherings, held virtually to start, will provide an opportunity for attendees to connect with one another, explore where we are today as a congregation, learn about our recently completed strategic plan and provide feedback on the priorities for our future. Keep your eyes open for information about these programs. Join me, and be part of charting our future. I believe that our congregation is poised to build on its recent success, and remain a vibrant flagship for exciting, meaningful, and engaging Jewish life in Southwest Florida. Together, we will reach that goal. L’Shalom, Rabbi Adam Miller 3

CLERGY MESSAGE

Cantor

Donna Azu

Just as we were ushering in the Jewish New Year, we received the extremely sad news of the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. According to Jewish tradition, a person who dies on Rosh Hashanah is a tzaddik, a person of great righteousness. Lovingly nicknamed “Notorious RBG,” she was nominated to the supreme court by President Bill Clinton in 1993, and developed a following over her more than 27 years on the bench, especially among young women who appreciated her lifelong, fierce defense of women’s rights. Shaped by her Jewish faith, RBG shared that “The Jewish religion is an ethical religion. That is, we are taught to do right, to love mercy, do justice, not because there’s gonna be any reward in heaven or punishment in hell. We live righteously because that’s how people should live and not anticipating any award in the hereafter.” On Thursday, December 17 at 5:00pm, I invite all the women (and young ladies) of Temple Shalom to join me for a special Rosh Chodesh program honoring the life and legacy of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Please look in your weekly email for the Zoom link. L’Shalom, Cantor Donna M. Azu

CLERGY MESSAGE

Director of Lifelong Learing Rabbi Ariel Boxman Chanukah is approaching and we are so excited to celebrate as a community. Below are some fun, family activities that can be done at home! Enjoy. 1. Make an Altoid tin menorah Make a travel size menorah that is both usable and completely adorable! Simply take an empty Altoid tin, glue nine 1/4” hex nuts to the center and add birthday candles when you are ready to light! In order to add some fun, decorate the outside of the Altoid tin with colored tissue paper and modge podge. For a list of materials and more detailed instructions, visit this link: https://tinyurl.com/altoidtinmenorah 2. Fry your very own jelly donut holes Fry your own jelly donuts! Mix your batter, drop by the spoonful into the frying pan, let cool, insert jelly and top with powdered sugar. These donuts are delicious and fun to prepare. Check out this link for the recipe and instructions: https://tinyurl.com/diyjellydonuts 3. Make an edible dreidel While it is super fun to play with dreidels, it is even more fun to eat them! In order to make your own, edible dreidel, gather the following items: a marshmallow, a Hershey’s kiss, a small pretzel stick and some vanilla frosting. In order to assemble, insert the pretzel stick into the marshmallow. Next, unwrap your Hershey’s kiss and spread some vanilla icing on to the flat side. Finally, adhere the Hershey’s kiss to opposite side of the marshmallow. Try spinning your dreidel and then enjoy your tasty treat! 4. Do an act of loving kindness While it is especially fun to receive gifts on Chanukah, it is also a wonderful time to teach children about the importance of giving back to others. Instead of giving gifts to your children on all eight nights, dedicate one night as a special night to give to others. On this night do a community service project as a family. Fun family community service projects include assembling peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for a local shelter, cleaning out closets and donating used clothing and toys to Goodwill, and making homemade dog toys to give to a local animal shelter. We hope you enjoy these Chanukah activities for you and your family! Wishing you a sweet and happy holiday. L’Shalom, Rabbi Ariel Boxman

We thank the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples for their generous support!

LEADERSHIP MESSAGE

President

Daryl Sissman

Happy Chanukah! Since becoming president of Temple Shalom, I’ve had to make all sorts of decisions about what to prioritize during my term. There are only so many hours in the day, after all! Strategic planning may not sound exciting, but thanks to our strategic planning task force, we have a critical blueprint to help guide us during these uncertain times. I will be updating you in these bi-monthly columns with the different initiatives from the plan. Even those I’ll only focus on one at a time, rest assured that we’re executing many pieces of the strategic plan already. Focus on Membership Engagement: Our “One Family” initiative, which is a large part of what makes Temple Shalom special, will be strengthened with a focus on membership engagement. We strive to ensure that every member finds his or her place at Temple, is engaged, and feels valued. The focus this year will be three areas: The first is to create additional opportunities for members to interact with our Clergy. We all love our clergy and want more time with them, even though Covid has made some of those interactions difficult at the moment. Nevertheless, Rabbi Miller will soon commence a series of virtual parlor meetings to meet with groups of members until he can hold them in person. The second is to make sure that all members are aware of our volunteer opportunities and that they can find a role that suits their needs. Our Congregation is filled with so many talented people who want to get involved with meaningful volunteer projects. If you have a skill or experience that you think would be of value at Temple, please be sure to let me know! The third directive is to reach out to existing and potential members who live in Estero and Bonita Springs. In order to accommodate the growing population at Temple Shalom who live in the Estero and Bonita Springs area, we held a shofar service on Rosh Hashana in a park in Bonita Springs. It was well attended and well received. We will be looking for more ways to meet our members where they are. I welcome suggestions! I hope that everyone has a wonderful Chanukah and a very Happy New Year. L’Shalom, Daryl Sissman

MEN’S CLUB

Men’s Club President Ron Yasbin

As December goes by, so goes by the year 2020. Clearly, we are looking for a better year in 2021. Some of the events that we had planned and others that were in the discussion stages have had to be canceled or altered to a virtual format. Despite these stressful times, the Men’s Club has maintained its membership as well as its ability to engage and support the Temple Shalom family. I personally want to thank all of you who continue to be supportive. There are some activities that I specifically want to mention this month. First, we are the official sponsor of the March 3 Jewish Book Festival event. The event features “Faster: How a Jewish Driver, and American Heiress and a Legendary Car Beat Hitler’s Best” by Neal Bascomb. Later this month we will be having a drawing for free tickets to this event. All paid up members of the Men’s Club will be eligible. An email with more information will follow. We will be co-sponsoring two upcoming programs with Sisterhood. On January 12, Clem Soffer will be discussing the rescue of Syrian Jews in the 90’s and his role in this great story. On February 9, we will either have our joint luncheon with a presentation, or a virtual presentation. The topic of this presentation will be on Egalitarianism within Judaism. This is an important and timely issue. Finally, on behalf of the entire Board of the Men’s Club I want to wish all of you and your families a happy and healthy Chanukah. When I think of relevant Chanukah related music, I am drawn to a song that was made famous by Peter, Paul and Mary: “Don’t Let the Light Go Out” which talks about the meaning of the Chanukah lights. You can listen to it at this url - https://tinyurl.com/y6ynw8pp L’Shalom, Ron

Thank you, Men’s Club!

The Preschool is thrilled with the generous donation of TVs made by the Temple Shalom Men’s Club. To quote Rabbi Ariel Boxman, “Thank you again for your generosity and support. We are very lucky to have such a wonderful and thoughtful Men’s Club!”

SISTERHOOD

Wow! Thanksgiving has come and gone and Sisterhood is moving right along. We are still having programs and Board meetings. Remember, you have to be a member of Sisterhood to join a program. In November, we had a fun and interactive program with one of Naples’ artists, Bronia Ichel. She gave a talk about abstract artist, Jackson Pollack. Then we had an “at home” painting class. There were 29 participants. What fun it was for everyone!

Sisterhood President

Karen Cohn

Have you noticed the six needlepoint pictures that have been on display in the Social Hall? Those six designs were made by Garson and Ethel Dinaburg and Miriam Lewis many years ago and donated to The Jewish Center of Collier County, the forerunner of Temple Shalom. Garson was Temple Shalom’s first president and Ethel served as the first president of Sisterhood and later the treasurer. Miriam and her husband were the first editors of the Temple newsletter. Sisterhood is happy to announce that these six needlepoints will be receiving a refurbishing in the form of new frames. We are very happy to underwrite this project. Proudly Sponsored by Temple Shalom Sisterhood We are also proud to announce that Sisterhood is sponsoring featuring the Jewish Book Festival on December 22 at 1:00pm. The Rabbi Corinne Copnick book is “A Rabbi at Sea” by Rabbi Corinne Copnick. After author of A Rabbi at Sea retiring at age 73, she began a six-year journey to become an Tuesday, Dec. 22 • 1:00 pm ordained rabbi. Next, she became a rabbi on cruise ships. I believe OUR very own Rabbi Perman did that a few times, too. To hear this lecture there will be a $10 charge payable to the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples. Look through this copy of The Voice for the ad for the Jewish Book Festival. If anyone is interested in helping Sisterhood with ideas for programs and fundraising, please feel free to call or email me and I will pass your name along. Karen Cohn, President Phone: 239-591-1494. Please leave a message. Email: kcohnrdh@gmail.com

Please join us and be inspired as Rabbi Corinne shares her insights about the culture and the people she encountered throughout her travels. She will offer us a treasure trove of her reflections on history, spirituality and humanity.

TIKKUN OLAM

Tikkun Olam Council Chair Ken Goldstein Social Action and the Pandemic: So Much More We Can Do Only a few more days until the end of 2020! I wish I could say with certainty that 2021 will be “normal,” but the good news is that we should feel thankful for how we have adjusted to so many new things. What hasn’t changed is that so many people in our community need help. The Tikkun Olam Council (TOC) has identified ways for members of our Congregation to help within our own community. We’ve transformed “Mitzvah Day” into “Mitzvah Madness” with targeted opportunities to help those in need right here in Collier and Lee Counties, like the recent Thanksgiving food collection for the Harry Chapin Food Bank. Watch for publicity about more of these opportunities in the coming months. Thanks to Marv Weisberg for leading a dedicated group of volunteers working on this initiative. We also recognize that we are part of a larger community. The TOC has held a number of forums dealing with health care, the environment, and reducing gun violence. Most recently, we had a forum on water quality here in Florida. We hope to work with the Union of Reform Judaism’s Religious Action Center (RAC) more closely now that they have established RAC FL to address issues that need long term solutions. More information coming soon. Finally, we cannot forget that we are also part of a community thousands of miles from Southwest Florida. In October, thanks to Judi Palay’s leadership, we held a virtual pizza dinner and Zoom meeting to help Jews in the former Soviet Union. Our Congregation has a fund called “Do Not Forget Us”that you can donate to. This fund supports Jews in the former Soviet Union all year long. We appreciate your time and generosity. It will really make a difference. As we head into the holiday season, we hope you will continue to remember families in our own community, across our country and around the world. Have a good idea? Contact kengoldstein@mac.com for more information on how to get involved.

Mitzvah Madness! Get ready for spring cleaning. More information to come in January. 24

ENDOWMENTS & PLANNED GIVING

Why Temple Shalom? If the values and traditions of your Jewish heritage make your life more meaningful— if the principles of inclusion, equality and continuity speak to your heart and your mind— if you believe Jews need a Jewish community, and the community needs a Jewish home— then a legacy gift to Temple Shalom is a tribute to who you are and what you stand for.

WHAT DO WE BELIEVE? At Temple Shalom, we embrace the central tenets of Judaism—God, Torah and Israel—even as we celebrate the diversity of Jewish beliefs and practices. We believe we are called to make our world whole and holy through Tikkun Olam. We welcome all—young and old; families, singles and couples; Jews by birth and Jews by choice; interfaith families and members of the LGBT community. We are committed to the absolute equality of women in all areas of Jewish life. And of the highest priority are our children— nurturing and educating the next generation to give them the greatest gift of all, a strong and positive Jewish identity.

SECURING OUR FUTURE In giving to sustain our present and secure our future, you honor those who came before us, enrich the community with whom you share the joys and challenges of your life today, and ensure a Jewish future for those who will follow—and like us, seek a diverse and egalitarian place of prayer, study and community in Naples, Florida. 33

How To Give Endowment

Planne d G if t s

The Temple Shalom General Endowment Fund is administered and managed by the Community Foundation of Collier County, which offers a high level of professional service and support. The Community Foundation has a strong reputation for fiscal stewardship, and offers high quality, cost-efficient services. Also important to Temple Shalom and our donors is the Foundation’s acceptance of unusual assets (e.g., privately held stock and personal valuables), planned giving services, and astute advice and counsel. There are many different ways to give which offer substantial tax benefits to many donors. We welcome the opportunity to assist you and your advisors in planning a contribution that suits your needs, and we deeply appreciate you considering a gift to sustain and secure Temple Shalom.

Your gift of any size to the Temple Shalom General Endowment Fund will make a substantial and lasting difference. A legacy gift is a reflection of your love of family, community and sacred Jewish values, and a meaningful way to ensure that our kehilla kedoshah —our sacred community, our One Family—will continue to thrive for generations to come.

35

ENDOWMENTS & PLANNED GIVING

G IVING NOW

ENDOWMENT

Our Endowment Funds will provide critical annual support while helping to ensure the long-term health of Temple Shalom. All gifts are invested carefully, with the investment income from endowment gifts potentially available, allowing the principal to grow over time.

CASH AND MARKETABLE SECURITIES

RETIREMENT PLAN ASSETS

CLOSELY HELD AND RESTRICTED STOCK

GIFTS OF LIFE INSURANCE

Marketable securities include stocks, bonds and shares of mutual funds

Contributing closely held or restricted stock to maximize giving options and minimize tax liability cost-effectively.

TANGIBLE PERSONAL PROPERTY

Give tangible personal property such as rare books, furniture and artwork.

REAL ESTATE A donation of a home, farm, commercial building, subdivision lot or unimproved land. This can lead to an immediate income tax deduction for the charitable value of the gift and capital gains tax savings.

36

With a completed endowment gift of $10,000 or more, you will become a member of our Eternal Light Society. In addition, a completed endowment gift of $10,000 or more enables you, should you choose, to create a named endowment fund in honor or memory of family, friends or colleagues.

Name the Temple Shalom General Endowment Fund as a primary or contingent beneficiary of a qualified retirement plan (i.e. IRA, SEP, 401(k), 403(b), etc.). You may be able to make a larger gift than you anticipate.

Name the Temple Shalom General Endowment Fund as a primary or contingent beneficiary of a life insurance policy. If we are named both sole owner and beneficiary of a paid-up policy, you may be eligible for a charitable income tax deduction. Your additional premiums may also be tax deductible. Note: The information in this publication is not intended as legal or tax advice. For legal advice, please consult an attorney. Consult your professional advisor when making a decision regarding tax deductions and contributions.

ENDOWMENTS & PLANNED GIVING

G IVING L ATER Planned gifts designating the Temple Shalom General Endowment Fund as your beneficiary can help you match your personal financial goals with your desire to ensure the future of Temple Shalom. Like many people, you may want to hold on to your money and other assets for now, just to be sure you can meet your family’s future financial needs. Consider a planned gift. Creatively structured to provide tax advantages and benefit you and your family for as long as you wish, planned gifts allow you to provide support at a higher level than you may think possible.

PLANNED GIFTS

BEQUESTS

The most traditional form of a deferred gift is a bequest. Consider including the Temple Shalom General Endowment Fund in your will or revocable (living) trust.

HONORARY AND MEMORIAL GIFT

Many people may want to give to the Temple Shalom General Endowment Fund in honor or memory of family, friends or colleagues.

CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY This is a way for you to receive guaranteed income for life and an immediate income tax deduction, while at the same time, leaving a charitable legacy.

CHARITABLE TRUSTS Charitable Remainder Trust By gifting assets to establish a charitable remainder trust, you receive an immediate tax deduction and lifetime income for you or your named beneficiary or beneficiaries. You also reduce or avoid capital gains taxes associated with the gifted asset. Eventually, when the trust’s term is complete, the remaining assets pass on to Temple Shalom.

Charitable Lead Trust Gifting assets to establish a charitable lead trust may provide gift or estate tax savings while fulfilling the donor’s charitable wishes. A charitable lead trust provides income payments to Temple Shalom for a specified period of time, after which the trust is transferred to your designated beneficiaries.
