There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.

Ecclesiastes 3:1

W

hen the author (or authors) of Ecclesiastes composed that text more than two thousand years ago, I doubt that the melody of the Byrds song was playing in the background. It says something that the same words which struck a chord with our ancestors continue to resonate after two millennia. Time remains precious. We track the seconds, minutes, hours, days, months and years, yet cannot stop time, nor can we have it back. One feels that there is not enough time -- too many events to attend, too little time for us to accomplish all that we want to do.

Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel teaches that the unique feature of Judaism is that it sanctifies time. Our calendar sets aside particular times as sacred and holy. The Hebrew word for holy has the root kuf-dalet-shin – which means to set aside as special or unique. Holy times are those that we designate as different from our ordinary activities. Beginning each Friday night we mark Shabbat, we celebrate the holidays, and every time we recite Kiddush at a wedding, brit milah, baby naming, or bar mitzvah, we sanctify that as a holy moment.

As busy as our lives may feel, we still have the power to decide how and when we will set aside sacred time to mark holy moments. February provides several opportunities to engage in holy moments with the Temple Shalom Family. Mitzvah Day takes place on the 10th, with plentiful opportunities to repair the world. Activities this year include packing 50,000 Meals of Hope, donating blood, providing toiletries for homeless students in our community, thanking first responders, collecting clothing, and other experiences. Later in the month, Soulful Shabbat takes place on February 22nd, an inspirational and uplifting Shabbat worship experience. For those seeking to further enlightenment, Rabbi Perman’s Sunday School for Adults returns this year on February 24th. Outside of programs at the congregation, one can also find holiness in setting aside time for a family Shabbat dinner, embracing opportunities to learn, or simply stepping outside of one’s busy life for a moment of reflection and gratitude.

Truly, there is no end to the list of potential moments We are happy to announce that that one can sanctify as holy. Time continues to fly. What moments will you make holy this month, the recently released book, Moral before your clock stands still?

s a huge fan of musical theater, I’m thrilled to share that Ellen Katz, our fantastic popular Broadway “edu-tainer,” will be back at Temple Shalom on March 3 to teach and entertain us with a retrospective of the musical Jersey Boys.

What launched these four kids from the toughest section of Newark into Rock and Roll History?

Hear the amazing story of Frankie Valli’s trip to stardom, with its highs and heartaches. Learn how his legendary life becomes the subject for a smash musical and movie.

Ellen combines photos, videos, quotes, lyrics and historical background into a PowerPoint presentation that educates attendees about the musical and its creators. There will be movie and song clips from the show with lots of singing and dancing promised!

All good things must come to an end…and be replaced by something even better! After months of hard work and dedication on the part of the entire front office staff, and the invaluable guidance and input from Board Member and software maven, Jeremy Schaab, we are pleased to share that we have migrated our Temple Management system and website to a more user-friendly system, called ShulCloud. We hope that you like the fresh look and intuitive navigation system that directs you to the information that is most relevant to you.

There are many new features that we think will make it easier for you to engage with your Temple family. Each of you can now login securely from the website to access the membership database and see all of your personal information, yahrzeits, RSVP for events, register for Religious School, classes and programs, make donations online, access the calendar and many other features within the site. You can even subscribe to the calendar on all of your devices and personalize it to include your individual events and reminders, such as yahrzeits and class times.

To login to Shulcloud, go to www.naplestemple.org. You will see the login button on the top right corner of the screen.

Enter your email address and click on "Forgot password." You will receive an email with a link to create your new password.

Once you have created your new password, please save your login information securely. Click on your name in the top right corner of the website, and then “My Account.” Next, you will see a screen with options to easily manage your profile, events, transactions, family information, email subscriptions, yahrzeits and more.

Please feel free to call the office and ask for assistance if you would like us to walk through it with you. Projects such as this upgrade are part of our commitment to improve every aspect of our service to you, so please know that we are glad to help and answer any questions, suggestions, feedback or comments about your experience. eborah Rosen Fidel moved to Naples in June and has been Temple Shalom’s Executive Director since July 1. Before coming to Naples, Deborah served in the public sector and non-profit community of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for 24 years in both a volunteer and professional capacity. She is smart, talented, capable, organized, compassionate and empathetic, and truly committed to Jewish communal service. She is a great addition to our Temple team.

On Friday, February 15th we will be having a special service to formally welcome Deborah to our Temple Shalom family.

Please join us if you are able, and show Deborah how grateful we are for the good fortune that brought her to us.

My youngest daughter, Nora, is turning thirteen this year, and will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah at 10:00 am on Monday, February 18th. We are having the service on a weekday to accommodate many of my relatives who do not travel on Shabbat. Please join us, if you are able, at the Bat Mitzvah service, or on that same Friday, February 15th evening service, where Nora will help lead us in prayer.

GALA 2019 – GALA TICKETS ARE GOING FAST!

LEARN WITH US Holocaust Museum Boxcar

The Holocaust Museum & Education Center of Southwest Florida is proud to announce Temple Shalom as host for its boxcar exhibit. To our knowledge, the boxcar exhibit is the only traveling one in the world.

Built in 1919, the boxcar is an authentic, Holocaust-era type and was used in Germany until after the war. Today, it travels to schools, libraries, museums, and religious institutions to share a message of learning and hope. The boxcar will be at Temple Shalom from February 13 through March 18, 2019. The docents will be on site for tours on Sunday, February 24 and March 3 from 9:00am to 1:00pm.

Moshe Z abari – Contemporary World of Judaica A rt

Wednesday, February 13 at 4:00pm Moshe Zabari is world-renowned Israeli artist known for his silver Judaica.

Born in Israel in 1935, he has achieved substantial recognition for his artwork as a participant in exhibitions of bold contemporary design and of religious art. His design for the Memorial Lamp for the Six Million Jews won first prize in the International Competition of Yad Vashem Institute in Jerusalem; first prize for his work at the Sixth Biennial National Art Exhibit, Cranbrook academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan; citation of merit from National Terrazzo and Mosaic Association (an outdoor sculpture); Jesselson Judaica prize of the Israel Museum.

Mr. Zabari’s works are included in the permanent collection of The Jewish Museum in New York, HUC Cultural Center and Museum, Los Angeles, the Design Collection of the Museum of Modern, New York, North Carolina Museum of Art, The Israel Museum, The Smithsonian Institute, Washington, DC, Spertus Museum of Judaica, Chicago, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minnesota and in many private collections.

A n historical collection of paper dresses: Hayes Hall Gallery Docent: Ellaine Rosen Friday, M arch 15, at 10:00am, The Baker Museum/A rtis Naples Isabelle de Borchgrave’s Fashioning Art from Paper completes its two-year North American tour in Naples. The exhibition celebrates the diversity of de Borchgrave’s work since the mid-1990s, including pieces from Papiers à la Mode, a survey of 300 years of fashion history presented by The Baker Museum in 2013; her Splendors of the Medici series exploring the Italian Renaissance costumes depicted in contemporaneous paintings; and her most recent work, Les Ballet Russes. Paul is originally from New York but lived in the Washington, D.C. area for about 30 years. Nancy has lived in the Washington, D.C. area for most of her life. They moved to Naples in July 2018 and are now full-time residents. Paul works as a federal contractor.

He is an administrator of IT systems for US Courts after working for the Executive Office of the President for more than five years. Nancy had been involved in federal marketing throughout her career. Together they have two sons, one daughter, and two stepsons.

Nancy and Paul share many hobbies such as bike riding, sailing, gardening, orchid growing, painting and target shooting. Nancy’s daughter is pursuing a career as an opera singer.

One Congregation’s Journey of Change: A Guide to Enriching R elationships in Your Congregation This book is about us! Dr. Tussy Shnider has written a description of the first five years of the One Family Initiative at Temple Shalom. Rabbi Miller wrote the foreword for her book.

Tussy’s book, a “how-to” guide, follows in detail the experiences of our temple in transforming our congregation from a healthy but transactionally-based organization to one focused on values and the sacredness of relationships. It is a detailed guide of an inreach initiative based on Relational Judaism as described by Dr. Ron Wolfson. It includes the relationship-based congregation concepts developed by Rabbi Richard Address and the concepts of Audacious Hospitality as described by Rabbi Rick Jacobs.

Our One Family Initiative began with a kick-off event on February 2, 2014 when Ron Wolfson came to Temple Shalom to introduce his Relational Judaism concept to our members. Tussy, one of the One Family Co-chairs, began writing about a year later. At the beginning, our focus was on member-member relationships. Tussy describes the projects undertaken over the last five years to enrich relationship opportunities among our members.

Continuing the focus on values, she explains the addition of another focus on memberto-congregation relationships. Tussy describes how our unique process transitioned our congregation from a financial structure based on annual standard commitment (dues) to one based on a voluntary pledge system, removing financial barriers to membership. The book includes a readiness checklist, samples of marketing materials, project tools, and letters to members. Victor Lucas: Facilities M anager Victor is Temple Shalom’s Facilities Manager in charge of maintenance and upkeep of the Temple, the Preschool and the surrounding grounds. He also coordinates and assists with various events, large and small, at the Temple and keeps everything looking great and running smoothly. Victor and his wife, Lynne, enjoy boating and fishing.

n a recent article, Rabbi Stanley Schickler, Executive Director No Hebrew School or S unday 2/17 of the Association of Reform Jewish Educators (ARJE) said, R eligious School “It has become clear that Jewish education is at its best when No Hebrew School Wednesday 2/20 integrating learning and living in multiple domains and settings.”

A great example of this type of integration is Mitzvah Day, when RAC Trip 2/22 - 2/25 we teach our children how to implement the theories of mitzvot and Jewish values into hands-on practice in the local community.

Engaging our students in the practice of mitzvot not only connects them to their peers, but creates a sense of belonging to a Jewish community, and allows them to discover the joy of giving back to their neighbors in need. Mitzvah Day helps build Jewish identity for the youngest of our Temple Shalom members.

In order to prepare for Mitzvah Day, we invite you to join us at the next Family Shabbat Experience, where families and children will work together to organize projects for use on Mitzvah Day - Sunday, February 10.

Activities will include writing letters to local first responders, creating heartfelt messages on Leaves of Hope for Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, and making beaded bracelets for Guadelupe Center for Mother’s Day. The activities are geared for children kindergarten through sixth grade, but everyone is welcome! Bring toddlers and teens, too! $25 per family for advance registration, $30 the night of the event. Welcome to this year’s Sunday School for Adults 2019, adult learning designed especially for you. This year, Rabbi Emeritus James Perman will discuss The Shape of Judaism 2019. Together, we’ll look at a number of questions: How does Judaism function as a religion? Is it about belief or observance? Can one be Jewish without being religious? Can one be spiritual without being religious? If we could see the big picture of where Judaism finds itself in 2019, how might it look?

How has it changed in our lifetime? What’s the connection between what happens in Judaism and what happens in society?

Might we have some inkling of where it might be going? What seems to change and what remains unchangeable? Judaism has been described variously as an ethnicity, a nationality, a religion, a philosophy, a theology, a way of life. Why does modern Judaism take so many forms? In short, what is the shape of Judaism, its practices and beliefs? We’ll be looking for deeper understanding and better answers.

Now in its 26th year, these talks remain a fixture of Temple Shalom’s rich offering of adult Jewish Studies. Rabbi Perman’s presentations draw on the rich wellsprings of Jewish experience, academic discipline, as well as the collective life experience of the attendees. There are two parts to this presentation — one on February 24, followed by the second a week later on March 3. Both talks begin at 10:00am. They are both without charge and open to the public.

ne of the goals of Temple Shalom Preschool is to teach the children, from an early age, the importance of performing mitzvot, giving back to society. A mitzvah is defined as a religious duty or obligation and one of the commandments of Jewish religious law.

We are all getting ready for Mitzvah Day on Sunday, February 10. This is an annual event in which Temple and Preschool families help give back to the Naples community. As in the past, we will be helping homeless children of Collier County by collecting toiletries and providing them with these much needed necessities. Another favorite activity is baking doggie biscuits for the Humane Society. The children love to make the biscuit dough, shape it and decorate it for the adorable animals. Such deeds give meaning to values so important to instill in children at a tender age. Mitzvah Day brings joy, satisfaction, and a sense of accomplishment to both parents and children. What a nice way to begin the New Year.

January also marked the beginning of our Little Cubs program for our youngest students who just turned 2. Two of our loving teachers, Ms. Jane and Ms. Sam, welcomed the little ones to our newest Tuesday – Thursday class. These precious children are getting introduced to the TSP experience in a caring and nurturing environment.

We were very excited to have Billy Jonas performing at Temple Shalom Preschool on January 28. We are incredibly grateful to the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples for making this concert possible. Everybody in our community was invited to enjoy this concert along with our TSP friends and family.

TSP Volunteers will be working on packing toilitries for homeless children, baking dog biscuits for the humane society, and assembling care packs for the purple bag project for children receiving chemotherapy. Come join us!!!

With a completed endowment gift of $10,000 or more you will become a member of our

Eternal Light society. ife insurance can be an excellent tool for charitable giving, and giving to an endowment in particular. Life insurance allows you to make a substantial gift to Temple Shalom endowments at relatively little cost to you, when changes in estate taxes or your family situation make the policy you own - or are the beneficiary of - no longer needed. In addition, you may also benefit from tax rules that apply to gifts of life insurance.

Here is a real life example: David and Janet are a couple in their mid-fifties. Janet’s parents, Ed and Margo, are retired and have a $1 million life insurance policy that was purchased many years ago, when the estate tax exemption was $675,000. The insurance policy would pay $1 million on their death to Janet and was designed to pay the expected estate taxes. Because of the current estate tax exemption, portability (ability to add the husband’s and wife’s exemptions together) and cost of living indexing, there would currently be no estate tax on Ed and Margo’s $5 million combined estate.

Therefore, the insurance policy is no longer needed for the original purpose of paying the estate tax. However, after Ed and Margo paid premiums on the insurance for almost 20 years, the policy has a considerable cash value, expected to generate more than enough income on the policy to pay the premiums.

After consulting with their tax advisor, Ed and Margo decide to borrow $75,000 from the cash value of the policy and gift it to their Temple endowment. The insurance policy still names Janet as beneficiary of the $1 million policy, the Temple receives $75,000 immediately and Ed and Margo receive a tax deduction for approximately $75,000 to use to reduce their taxable income over the next five years.

The Talmud teaches that whoever saves a life is considered to have saved the whole world. On Mitzvah Day at Temple Shalom, Sunday, February 10, 2019, from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm you can donate blood and help to save a life. Let us know if you wish to reserve an appointment.

hat is a mitzvah? By strict definition, a mitzvah is any one of 613 commandments that are described in the Torah and were given to the Israelites at Mount Sinai. A broader definition is a moral deed performed within a religious duty. But today, we think of a mitzvah as being an act of kindness performed without expecting some payment in return. If we think of the old Boy Scout good deed of “helping an old lady across the street” or today’s good deed of sitting at your lunch or dinner table at a restaurant and paying for a first responder’s or serviceman’s (or woman’s) meal at another table, these too are mitzvot.

On Sunday, February 10, from 8:00am to 12:00pm, Temple Shalom will be hosting our annual Mitzvah Day, giving everyone an opportunity to perform an “extra” mitzvah that day. The options are many, and so are the rewards. Meals of Hope is always a huge success, with large groups of volunteers doing their mitzvot by packing approximately 50,000 meals.

The cost of a meal is only 20 cents so donations, no matter how small, are also needed. (A donation as little as $18 can help feed 90 underprivileged children.)

The Community Blood Center bloodmobile will be in our parking lot for anyone willing and able to donate a pint of blood. What can be a bigger mitzvah than saving someone’s life with your blood donation?

The fun and rewarding Beading for Betterment will benefit the children of the Guadalupe Center in Immokalee. Please contact Carol Hirsch at chirsch1951@gmail.com for further information.

There are a number of collection boxes around the building: travel size toiletries, school supplies, gently used clothing, and the “Purple Bag Project,” run by the pre-school, to collect lipbalm, sugar-free sucking candy, mints, snack bags of pretzels or veggie chips, and small hand-held activities such as card games, puzzles, coloring books, and crayons.

There will be many ways to perform that extra mitzvah and walk out with a great feeling of reward. Please join us on February 10. And consider what you do as mitzvah #614.

THREE TO RECEIVE LAMED VAVNIK AWARD

n January 2018, Temple Shalom’s “We Are One” project initiated an award in memory of long-time member and all-around activist Ann Jacobson. Called the lamed vavnik award, it was presented to three local people, all of whom might be one of the 36 humble, righteous people for the sake of whom God preserves the world from destruction.

Those who first received this honor are Paul Rosofsky, Rev. Kathy Kircher, and Amy Snyder.

On February 8, we will deliver that title to three more “hidden saints” whose loving service to humankind might mean that each of them could be a lamed vavnik, as described in the mystical tradition of Kabbalah. This year’s honorees are Yale Freeman, Stephen Popper and Dr. Jaclynn Faffer.

Newer members of Temple Shalom may not recognize Yale, but he was president of the congregation three presidents ago—prior to our current one Debra Antzis, her predecessor Debbie Zvibleman, and her predecessor Neil Shnider. In fact, it was Yale who brought the two Debbies into the line of succession when he chaired the Temple board’s nominating committee. “I’m a believer in the establishment of long-term strategies,” he said. “A good strategy leads to strength, which leads to solutions.” During his term as president, Temple Shalom initiated the “One Family” concept that has brought us to the strength we now enjoy.

Yale used that idea to help him become one of Florida’s—and the nation’s— leading criminal defense attorneys, receiving many honors from his peers.

After 44 years as a lawyer, he recently “retired,” which for him means that he works only 50 hours a week instead of the 100 or so he was accustomed to. In fact, during most of his adult life he had two full-time pursuits: his law cases and a multitude of non-profit organizations needing his dedicated efforts.

The list is long but revolves around feeding the hungry—through the Harry Chapin Food Bank, an Alliance for Community Response (that brought into one alliance all regional food banks), Collier Harvest, and America’s Second Harvest. When his wife Susan contracted breast cancer, he redirected his energies into Lawyers Against Breast Cancer. Today, he’s trying to decide where he can be most effective, now that he’s—ahem—retired.

He has come a long way since his mother asked him to help her get food to a school in Haiti. “The children can’t learn because they’re hungry,” his mother said, “so if I get the food will you find a way to ship it to Haiti?” Steve was then in the lumber import/export business and knew how to ship large cargo. If you’ve ever worked an assembly line on Temple Shalom’s Mitzvah Day, you have 239-530-2500 increased the statistics of Meals of Hope. Steve’s first packing event in August 2007 used 500 volunteers to create 135,000 meals. He sent 8000 of those to Haiti. What to do with the rest? He reached out to the Harry Chapin Food Bank, who took all he had—and still does. He set a goal to reach a million meals in his first year. He exceeded it. To date, Meals of

Hope has produced 54 million meals. No more of these meals go to Haiti. They all stay locally.

Steve explained the process of distributing food to those who are “food insecure”: food banks use donations to provide food to pantries that provide it directly to individuals. “In Collier County, we don’t have enough food pantries, so even though people give more to food banks, food does not always reach the hungry.”

Even in “wealthy” Collier County, the number of families who need help with food grows every year. His five-year strategic plan has committed to increase to 12 food pantries. “Mobile pantries are my preference,” Steve said, “because we can include frozen meat and fresh produce donated by local grocery stores and other sources.” During that five years he hopes to find a larger building and purchase four more pantry (refrigerated) trucks. “At the end of that five years, we expect to feed 5000 families a week.”

What drives Steve can be summed up in one word: helpful. He builds his life on a simple phrase: “See a need and fill it.”

LAMED VAVNIK AWARD Feeding hungry seniors has become a large part of the strategic plan for Dr. Jaclynn Faffer, President and CEO of Jewish Family and Community Services. When she started eight years ago, she spent her early days analyzing community needs. What she discovered astounded her: most of the people who reached out to JFCS for help but had to be turned down were seniors. She saw this “unmet need” and determined to meet it. Doing so would take both compassion and courage, the two attributes that she felt she brought to the table, because “to get funding for seniors is hard,” she says. “They’re seen as the past, but I feel honoring our past is vital.”

A social worker with a PhD earned from Yeshiva University, Faffer Stephen Popper and Rabbi Adam Miller speak to utilized as her road map the strategic plan formulated by the JFCS leadership before they recruited her. It quickly hit her that this the congregation on Mitzvah Day 2018. community needed a center dedicated to serving the needs of seniors.

Naples Senior Center now serves not just Jewish but all seniors. To become a member requires only $25 a year and entitles all members to everything the center offers: a hot lunch one day a week; social interaction; a food pantry; a “choice” pantry where they can shop for necessary items privately, to protect their dignity. Some 400 to 500 people per month take advantage of these offerings.

Currently JFCS has established eight Dementia Respite groups—six in Naples and two in Marco Island—to offer four hours up to twice a week of respite for caregivers of loved ones with dementia. Faffer sees this service plus the senior center as her biggest accomplishments.

When notified of this award, Faffer said, “There is no greater honor than to have my name Dr. Jaclynn Faffer joined with Ann Jacobson’s in the same sentence.”
