From Rabbi Miller There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.

Ecclesiastes 3:1

When the author (or authors) of Ecclesiastes composed that text more than two thousand years ago, I doubt that the melody of the Byrds song was playing in the background. It says something that the same words which struck a chord with our ancestors continue to resonate after two millennia. Time remains precious. We track the seconds, minutes, hours, days, months and years, yet cannot stop time, nor can we have it back.

One feels that there is not enough time -- too many events to attend, too little time for us to accomplish all that we want to do.

Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel teaches that the unique feature of Judaism is that it sanctifies time. Our calendar sets aside particular times as sacred and holy. The Hebrew word for holy has the root kuf-dalet-shin – which means to set aside as special or unique. Holy times are those that we designate as different from our ordinary activities. Beginning each Friday night we mark Shabbat, we celebrate the holidays, and every time we recite Kiddush at a wedding, brit milah, baby naming, or bar mitzvah, we sanctify that as a holy moment.

As busy as our lives may feel, we still have the power to decide how and when we will set aside sacred time to mark holy moments. A holy moment could be dedicating time to acts of tikkun olam by participating in Mitzvah Day on February 8th. We can sanctify time by connecting with our Temple Family at Shabbat services or experiencing the inspirational concert with Neshama Carlebach and Josh Nelson on February 28th. One can find holiness in setting aside time for a family Shabbat dinner, embracing opportunities to learn, or simply stepping outside of one’s busy life for a moment of reflection and gratitude.

Truly, there is no end to the list of potential moments that one can sanctify as holy. Time continues to fly. What moments will you make holy, before your clock stands still?

Berk is the Henry and Sally Schaffer Professor of Holocaust and Jewish studies at Union College in Schenectady, New York. He is the former Chair of the Department of History, Director of the Program in Russia and East European Studies and helps advise the Hillel organization at Union.

Professor Berk is considered an absolutely superb lecturer. He is always informative, interesting and entertaining. He is widely known for his expertise on the Holocaust, Russia, the Middle East and a variety of Jewish subjects.

From Cantor Azu Let’s Get Ready for Purim!

As we approach the month of March, I know many of you have been anxiously awaiting this Purim announcement. This year’s Purim Spiel is based on the popular Disney movie, Frozen. We need adults and kids for this exciting production!

Rehearsals for Frozen: the Purim Spiel will be held on Thursday evenings at 6:30pm on February 12, 19, 26 and March 5. There will not be an official audition. All attendees will have a role in the play and lead roles will be assigned during the early rehearsal process.

Please RSVP to me at dazu@naplestemple.org or 239-455-3030 ex. 207 to let me know if you or your child is planning to take part in the production as it will help me be more prepared for our first rehearsal on Feb. 12.

The play is open to all ages. Younger children will be in the group numbers which will be rehearsed in the early part of the rehearsals so that they may get home for bedtime.

We will be celebrating the holiday of Purim (and performing!) on Sunday morning, March 8.

Preschool on Parade

Twenty five years…Imagine! Temple Shalom Preschool will be celebrating its 25th Anniversary this year. To commemorate this momentous occasion, we will be celebrating on Thursday, April 30, in conjunction with our Annual Art Auction. We hope you will join us and share in the festivities that evening.

The growth and development over the past quarter century is astonishing. In 1990, the preschool consisted of merely two classrooms, today, there are ten. There were only twelve adorable students, today, there are 110. Sharon Norgart and Marjie Ginsburg were two of the teachers who were present at the preschool’s inception 25 years ago; I, Seyla Cohen, came on board the following year. I am extremely proud of how the school has expanded; our staff ’s strength and dedication over the years is responsible for our success today. Today we can boast a progressive curriculum, a dedicated staff, professional child development methods and philosophy, and exceptional family involvement. Temple Shalom Preschool has been acknowledged by local educators and parents as a top rated preschool in the Naples area.

Each year improvements have developed. New ideas are explored and have lead to the creation of the unique and allencompassing extra-curricula activities offered today. Innovations such as the Storyland Library and Dramatic Arts Center, the state-of-the-art Exploratorium Science Lab, our Tech and Computer Lab, and modern-day playground and bicycle racetrack are just some of the programs we offer to expand our students’ minds and develop their creativity.

These, along with the remarkable art studio, music, dance and movement programs, Spanish Instructional Center and most recently, our TSP Garden, add to the wide diversity of subject matter presented and available to our TSP students.

We invite the public and everybody that touched our amazing preschool in one way or another, to attend our 25th Anniversary and Art Show on April 30. This will be a meaningful and significant evening filled with wine, refreshments, silent auctions, and entertainment.

A special ““todah rabah” to the Jewish Federation of Collier County for helping to provide exceptional education to the students of TSP. Their very generous contribution will enable TSP to give financial aid to the Jewish families that want to be part of our Temple Shalom Preschool family, but may need some assistance. As the director of Temple Shalom Preschool, I would like to express a personal “Thank You” to the Federation for this much appreciated grant.

Next School Year In February, registration opens up for Temple Shalom Preschool for the upcoming school year. Temple Shalom Preschool has been distinguished for many years as a top preschool in Naples. Its programs for children ages birth - 5 are top-quality, dedicated to preparing a firm foundation for students entering kindergarten and successive school years.

Beginning with its “Baby and Me” and “Mommy, Me, and More” programs, children begin their formative years in a safe, wholesome, academically challenging environment, conducive to promoting self-esteem, confidence, and individuality. Its dedicated and well-trained staff provides a caring and loving atmosphere in which each child flourishes and grows to meet his or her full potential. Enrichment in Science, Art, Technology, Storytelling, Puppetry, Drama, Gardening/Nutrition, Music, Fitness, and Foreign Language is offered. General sign-up becomes available as space permits to the public once current families have had a chance to enroll their children.

Health-Safety Day/Open House

Once again Temple Shalom Preschool is hosting its annual Health-Safety Day/Open House on Sunday, February 15th from 11am to 2pm. This is a very special activity-packed day-long program educating our young citizens about health and safety within our community. Various community helpers come to present awareness about their individual departments. The children enjoy seeing fire trucks up close and personal. They are able to climb on board and view fire fighter’s gear and equipment. EMT shows up in their ambulances for the children to have a clear view of what is inside its vehicles, and the police department brings their mascot, McGruff the Crime Dog, teaching the children about combating crime in the area. Water safety, a major concern for parents in the area, is reinforced. Domestic animal services is another presenter along with Smokey the Bear from the Department of Forestry. Not to mention the rock climbing wall and the bounce house brings a lot of fun and excitement to the children as well as riding the ponies around our campus. Health-Safety Day is an event open to the general public and is a welcome and well-received program for the community each year.

At Temple Shalom Preschool, we follow good nutritional eating habits and children are taught about appropriate portion size, nutritional value of certain foods, and the importance of including fruits and vegetables with every meal.

This year, we are adding this important aspect to our Safety day and making it an even better event by introducing Health education, healthy foods, a chance to see and taste our own TSP garden fruits and vegetables and even participate in a fitness class.

Parents will also have a chance to tour our beautiful Preschool and meet our teachers. Children will have fun listening to a story in our famous Storyland Children’s Library, singing with our music teacher, checking out our brand new and futuristic Technology Lab, doing experiments in our Professor Einstein’s Laboratorium, having their face painted, jumping in the Bounce House, riding on a pony or climbing on the rock wall!

From the Religious School Director

Eight hundred forty-nine. That’s how many homeless children are identified in Collier County Public Schools this year. It’s hard to comprehend, I know, but according to Cynthia Rodriguez, the liaison hired by the school system to work with these children, that number represents just the ones that she knows about. These children are often left with friends while their parents travel to other communities to find temporary work. Some of them “couch surf,” staying with one friend for a few weeks, then moving to another, then another. Some live with their family in a car.

In Religious School we teach the values of doing Mitzvot, giving Tzedekah and Tikkun Olam, repairing the world. As Mitzvah Day approaches on February 8th, we remind the students the importance of doing Mitzvot through stories, activities and discussions. Recently, during T’filah one Wednesday, I led a discussion about “paying it forward.”

When I asked what the term meant the students were quiet. Finally one student raised his hand and said “When someone does something nice for me, I pay it forward by

doing something nice for someone else.” I couldn’t have said it better! The others raised their hands and shared examples of how they paid it forward.

Helping the homeless children in Collier County Schools is one of the ways that we can pay it forward. We are collecting school supplies and backpacks to donate to these children so they can have the materials they need to succeed in school. They need items such as: backpacks, pens, pencils, paper (wide ruled), notebooks, binders, folders, crayons, markers, erasers, rulers and hygiene items - deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, personal products for girls, etc.

Please help us pay it forward by donating an item or two for these children. You can drop them in the box located in the main foyer or in front of the Religious School Office on or before Mitzvah Day. Join us for this wonderful intergenerational day of social action. We will also be writing letters to the IDF Soldiers of Israel, making cards for the First Responder firefighters and police officers, making cards for residents in nursing homes and much more.

The Sunday School for Adults 2015 Sundays, February 22 and March 1 at 10:30AM

In the first session, February 22, Rabbi Perman will focus on some of the most important questions people raise about our faith. We’ll examine the core ideas that form the foundation of Jewish belief, the set of ideas that have always been at the center of Judaism. These ideas are simple yet powerful truths that form the basis of all Western religious thought, not just Judaism but Christianity and Islam as well.

The second session, Sunday, March 1, will apply those questions to the realm of Jewish practice, and demonstrate how you can explain Jewish practices to your fellow Jews as well as your nonJewish friends in terms of the powerful ideas that have led us through the ages. You can also find new meaning in your own Jewish practice. When Tevya sang “Tradition!” it was a nice comfortable response — but not much of an answer. You can do better.

In the process of learning about ourselves, in the course of explaining what we’re all about, we’ll come to understand ourselves in new and different ways that showcase the beauty and durability of our traditions.

This is truly Judaism on a grown-up level, presented in a lively and refreshing manner that will give new meaning to everything you’ve ever understood to be authentically Jewish.

Finally, get the answers you’ve been waiting for. Understand those reasons. Learn how to explain Judaism to others. When you can explain yourself to others, you get to know yourself.

In Appreciation Beverly & Howard Moeckler have generously donated the piece that now sits prominantly in front of the Temple. “Untitled” is by the Israeli artist Niso Maimann who has a studio in Lake Worth, FL. Howard notes that he and Beverly were taken with the abstraction of the Star of David and its brilliant yellow radiance.

They are both pleased that it has found a home at Temple Shalom.

Sisterhood News

By the time you read this, the Sisterhood’s 50th anniversary will be a beautiful memory. We hope you all had a wonderful evening and I want to thank all the fantastic hosts for providing dinner to over 140 people! Our hosts were Nancy & Ted Brother, Carole & Jason Flegel, Stephanie & Neil Heuer, Fern & Andrew Jaffe, Judi Palay, Jane & Rabbi James Perman, Anne & Mark Rubin and Daryl & David Sissman, Estelle & Stuart Price, Tussy & Neil Shnider, and Debbie & Barry Zvibleman, and me, Sandy Stone. After dinner, we all joined together at Temple where the social hall had been transformed into a magical setting, thanks to the efforts of Claudia Baer and Ashley Solomon and the dedicated Temple staff. The desserts were delicious, the champagne and cordials were delightful, our DJ, Jeremy Schaab, was outstanding, and the raffle was fabulous! A slide show showing moments from Sisterhood’s history and giving information about our accomplishments was playing in a loop all evening so we all were able to enjoy blasts from the past and learning more about Sisterhood.

Artists Cesar Aguilera and Danielle Branchaud created a one of a kind artwork while we watched, and we loved viewing their progress. There was even a photo booth and a candy table, complete with a five-piece Sisterhood cake created by Mary Beth Strom to commemorate our big birthday! All in all, it was a vastly different event and a great success. Kudos to all the many people who planned and followed through to make this an outstanding event.

On Monday February 9th at 11:30am, Sisterhood and Men’s Club are presenting a joint luncheon. The Men’s Club have planned a real Chinese feast and Sisterhood is providing home-made desserts. Jim Sernovits will entertain us again this year with his arm chair travelogue. This year’s topic is Indonesia. His slides and commentary always enchant us. Make your reservations now! Blood Drive on Mitzvah Day, Sunday, February 8th

by Jane Perman Most people, when they learn that Temple Shalom is having its annual Blood Drive, understand the need and want to help. Every hour people’s loved ones receive donated blood right here in Collier County. Your blood donation may save the life of your family member, your friend, or your neighbor.

Our rabbis teach us that when you save one life, it’s as if you saved the whole world. Donating blood is one of the best ways to fulfill a mitzvah (commandment) to save a life. On Sunday, February 8th between 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. the Community Blood Center Bloodmobile will be in the Temple parking lot. Please consider participating in fulfilling this mitzvah.

The J Street Challenge film is a huge success!

On January 21st, well over 300 people gathered at Temple Shalom for a viewing of the film, The J Street Challenge. The sanctuary was filled to capacity! After the film the producer, Avi Goldwasser, was on hand for a question and answer session. A big thank you to Howard Agranat for bringing this event to Temple Shalom.

Contributions to Temple Shalom Showing We Care

Contributions made to the various Temple Shalom funds are wonderful ways to show your appreciation of family and friends, to celebrate happy occasions and to honor the memories of loved ones. We suggest a minimum donation of chai ($18.00). With a minimum donation of $18.00, a notice of your gifts will be sent to the honoree and mention will be published monthly in The Voice.

Operations

General Fund: Donations used for operating expenses.

Tree of Life: Each ‘Rock’ and ‘Star of David’ is a donation of $540.00; each ‘Leaf ’ is $240.00. The contribution must be received in its entirety before engraving is ordered.

Burn The Mortgage Fund: Established by Gerry and Pearl Sugarman to reduce payment of any existing mortgage.

Religious School

Endowment

Religious School Enrichment Fund: Donations augment the Religious School budget to enrich the education of our children.

Scholar In-Residence Endowment Fund: Supports the endowment established by Shirley and Henry Kraus. This fund enables Temple Shalom to bring visiting scholars to the Temple as an educational benefit to the membership.

Religious School: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for Jewish learning in both Sunday and Hebrew Schools.

Polster Religious School Scholarship Fund: To purchase or supplement Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Ben Calmenson Fund: Donations will be used to create sponsorships to send children to attend Camp Coleman.

Rabbi Abraham Shusterman Children's Center Memorial Fund: To support our Religious School and Preschool.

Sisterhood Religious School Scholarship Fund: To provide Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Memorial Fund: Donations made in honor of a loved one who has passed.

Joseph S. Weinfeld Faculty Development Fund: Donations support both curriculum and teaching skill enrichment activities for Sunday and Hebrew School teachers.

William Freschel Kiddush Fund: All donations help provide Kiddush Lunch each Saturday following worship services.

A $150 donation is considered to be a sponsorship to honor a special someone or occasion.

Youth Activities Fund: Donations provide financial support for children of our congregation to attend Camp Coleman, to take part in regional/national youth conventions, and to experience a summer in Israel.

Prayerbook Fund: The new minimum contributions to purchase a plaque for Shabbat and High Holiday Books: $50.00 / Pentateuch & Haftarah books: $100.00

Preschool

Flower Fund: Provides Bimah flowers each Shabbat. A $150.00 donation is considered to be a sponsorship in memory or in honor of a special someone or occasion.

Preschool Enrichment Fund: The enhancement of curriculum, educational programs and experiences.

Mitzvah Baskets: A $100.00 donation will purchase several hundred dollars of food for JFCS. Dr. Philip & Shirley Gilbert Music Fund: Donations are used for the enhancement of music at Temple Shalom.

Preschool Fund: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for the Preschool.

Arby Lipman Children's Library: Children and adolescent books and magazine subscriptions, and supplies are purchased.

Jack and Charlotte Ward Family Children's Music Shelf: Audio and video musical tapes for children.

Endowment Fund: Donations help to secure the future, enrich the programs and provide for emergency needs of the congregation.

The Herbert & Ruth Abramson Fund: To supplement the general operating fund and to provide enrichment for Temple functions.

Rabbi Miller’s Discretionary Fund: For tzedakah, charitable purposes, and general enhancement of the Rabbi's work.

Cantor Azu's Discretionary Fund: For tzedakah, charitable purposes, and general enhancement of the Cantor's work.

Leadership Fund: Donations are used for the enhancement and enrichment of leadership programs at Temple Shalom.

Library

Social Action

New Members: Naida & Mike Rodman Naida and Mike are originally from Boston, MA and return there each summer for four months. They have two adult children and four grandchildren. Mike is a full time consultant on risk management and commercial insurance. Naida was an elementary school teacher until their children were born and then worked part time in marketing and time management for approximately ten years.

They both enjoy golf and bridge and try to travel abroad as much as possible.

Judith & Charles Picus Originally Judith and Charles are both from Wisconsin but more recently they have called Rockford, IL their home. Charles is a retired physician. Judith, an educator and professional volunteer, served two terms as her Temple’s president and was the regional president and on the board of the national UAHC (now the URJ) for ten years. They have 4 children, 7 grandchildren and 2 step-grandchildren. Judith enjoys swimming and Charles enjoys tennis and biking and they both like to play bridge.
