ast month, the Collier County School Board released its proposed calendar for the 2016-17 school calendar. The draft first presented did not close schools on Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur, but did have two full days off school between those two sacred holidays. I wrote a letter in response and, along with concerned parents and citizens, spoke at the following school board meeting.

The board unanimously voiced their belief that Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur should be days off for students and staff alike. For the first time schools will be closed across Collier County for those holidays next year.

This is an important milestone in the history of the Collier County Jewish community. Nearly 54 years ago, four families created our congregation so that there could be a home for Jewish families in this area. We are now reaping the fruits of their efforts – as the community, and Temple Shalom, have grown through the years. It is remarkable how much the broader community has changed, and now reflects the value of inclusivity. Along those lines I want to share with you the article below, which first appeared in the Naples Daily News on the Saturday after the school board decision.

Hard or Soft – How is Your Heart This Year?

The Book of Exodus describes in detail the struggles of the Israelites who sought freedom from Pharaoh and Egypt.

Within that story, God inflicts Ten Plagues upon the Egyptian people. After each plague, Pharaoh has the opportunity to give a different answer. The text notes that instead of allowing the Israelites to leave, Pharaoh “hardens his heart” as a reaction to the plagues. This idiomatic phrase is intended to convey that Pharaoh became more resolute in his refusal to change. Each time his heart is hardened, another plague follows.

While Pharaoh is the clear villain in this narrative, there is an element of Pharaoh that we identify with. That human desire to dig in our heels, and refuse to budge when we are challenged. It is usually an emotional response to have our authority disputed, much like it was for Pharaoh. Rather than listen to facts, or consider the potential consequences for ourselves or loved ones, we stubbornly give the same answer over and over again.

There is truth to the Yiddish phrase, “If you keep saying you are right all the time, you are bound to be wrong.”

Believing that one is beyond reproach is a certain recipe for disaster. In sharp contrast to Pharaoh’s stiff-necked refusal to

change, sits the Biblical example of Moses – open to the idea of a burning bush, open to the possibility of change, and accepting of his own fallible nature. When Moses destroys the Ten Commandments, and later disobeys God to strike the rock, he accepts that those are mistakes, and seeks to learn from, rather than deny his errors in judgment.

In this way Moses represents the ideal of what we strive to be as human beings, and as leaders. Mosaic leadership was on display in our community this week, as the Collier County Public Schools Board examined the calendar for 2015-2016.

Rather than take the Pharaonic approach, and hardening their hearts, the board members listened to the requests made to recognize the Jewish holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur as days off from school. The school calendar now reflects the value of inclusivity, as the Board voted unanimously to make those two Jewish observances full days off from school.

May we all strive to follow the example set by our community leaders. Let us enter into this relatively new year of 2016 with our hearts open to the possibilities that we find.

May it be a year of laughter, love and blessing for all in our community.

s a young child, one of my favorite things to do with my parents was watch movie musicals.

Those films were my first education into musical theater and from where my love for theater stems. We would watch the “Sound of Music”, “My Fair Lady”, “Annie” and my personal favorite, “Fiddler on The Roof ”. I think I connected to Fiddler the most because of its Jewish content and themes. I could almost picture myself as one of Tevye’s daughters!

Just a little over a year ago, Fiddler on the Roof celebrated its 50th Broadway anniversary. When the show first premiered in 1964, reviews were mixed but the show went on to become the longest running Broadway musicals. Unsurprisingly, it was embraced by the American Jewish community which, for the first time, saw their culture represented in the mainstream not through Vaudevillian stereotype but engaged with affection.

To celebrate Fiddler’s world wide popularity, join us at Temple Shalom on Sunday, February 28 at 4pm as Ellen Katz, popular Broadway “edu-tainer”, will present a joyous retrospective of “Fiddler On The Roof ”, discussing its evolution from page-tostage and script-to- screen. Season is surely here. he restaurants are jammed and the traffic is bumper to bumper.

Some of the full timers complain about the difficulty of getting around in a timely fashion or not being able to get a reservation at their favorite restaurant but at Temple Shalom we are always up for it. The season is packed with exciting activities and education to enhance the communities’ enjoyment and time while encouraging those attending the programs and events to Neil Shnider engage and connect with others while.

President This season Temple Shalom has partnered with The Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning and is offering two ten week classes that have been sold out for weeks. Mitzvah Day is always a big hit at Temple Shalom as we help those in need. We partner with The Community Blood Center, Gift of Life, Meals of Hope, Harry Chapin Food Bank, first responders and IDF soldiers, Goodwill, St. Matthews House, JewishFamily and Community Services of Southwest Florida and many more. The goal is to bring generations together to do good for the world and those that are less fortunate.

Our Scholar in Residence weekend, made possible by the Shirley and Henry Kraus Scholar in Residence Foundation, provides the community with both entertainment and education. This year, Professor Daniel C. Matt joined us at Temple Shalom and spoke on the theme, “From Kabbalah to the Big Bang: Ancient Wisdom and Contemporary Spirituality.”

Our Men’s Club and Sisterhood keep busy with hosting breakfasts and lunches, and sponsoring events through the year. The “Dream On! A Night of Stars”, event at Wyndemere

Jewish Federation of Collier County Alvin Becker, Chairman Jeffrey Feld, CEO/President As a representative of Temple Shalom, I want to thank your Board of Trustees and your leadership for honoring Temple Shalom’s Religious School and Preschool with a combined grant of fifty seven thousand five hundred dollars ($57,500). This grant is to be used for programming and scholarships for those families that are in financial need but still value Jewish education. As you know, Temple Shalom does not deny any person membership in the congregation, the opportunity to worship, or participation in educational programs due to financial hardships. Our doors are open to all. Our preschoolers attend with great enthusiasm and excitement to learn new things and meet new friends. Our religious school students begin to learn Torah and prepare for their day on the bimah as they become b’nai mitzvah and to take their place as adults in the Jewish community. Again, every child, at Temple Shalom, is entitled to that Jewish education.

Country Club will be exciting and provide the opportunity for folks to honor two families that have been supporters and friends to the Jewish community and Temple Shalom. This event will bring together the entire community to connect with one another in joy and happiness and do good for the Temple.

Join us for the Brown Bag Lunch Series to nosh and learn.

The Techie Tutors is going strong as young adults are helping older adults learn how to use their technology. What a great intergenerational program! A Tikkum Olam Council has been developed to “help repair the world”. This council helps coordinate the many Temple social action/social justice activities at the Temple and engages in more (and new) activities to make a difference.

Rabbi Perman offers his Sunday School for Adults again this season, with a standing room only attendance. Don’t forget the BOGO bags that help fill the pantry at JFCS. There is a great need in Collier County.

As you can see we are busy. But we also remember that we are here to “touch hearts, transform lives and make our world better”. We serve our congregation and greater Southwest Florida via our commitment to education, traditions and identity, while providing a cohesive community that enhances Jewish life in Naples.

Be part of the excitement of the season and don’t forget all are welcome at the Temple. Friday night services are jammed and Sisterhood delights us with their Oneg Shabbat. Our sanctuary has streaming video of all activities, so if you cannot make it to services join us through your computer. By the time you read this article we hope to have our new hearing loop installed in the sanctuary to enhance the experience for those with hearing aids.

The Sunday School for Adults 2016

Two consecutive Sundays - February 21st & 28th 10:30AM to 11:30AM Sampling the Psalms — Where Religion Meets Poetry A Note from Rabbi Perman: .

This is the twenty-second year for the Sunday School for Adults, a most suitable time because this topic favors maturity. The material we’ll be looking at is definitely for grownups. It’s in the Bible but it’s not Bible stories. It is written for people who have life experience, who have faced and continue to face the never-ending challenges of living.

It’s not about easy answers — it’s about the foundational sources of support and encouragement, strength and hope. It’s the fine distinction between knowledge and wisdom.

This year we’ll consider a number of selections from the Bible’s Book of Psalms.

They are my personal favorites because of the unique ways in which they address our deepest, most personal needs and desires.

Why Psalms? Aside from the most familiar Twenty-Third Psalm that begins, “The Lord is My Shepherd,” most of us aren’t that familiar with this amazing literary treasure. But we ought to be. It is our heritage. It is both useful and easily accessible. Many Jews and Christians consider it a user’s manual for life.

s we’ve all heard, it takes a village. It takes a village to keep our synagogue open, the lights on, the programs running. Our members provide critical support – not only financial, but engagement. For the Religious School, we have a significant ‘village’ that helps us. We have our families, the synagogue community at large, Men’s Club, Sisterhood, donors from the Jewish community in Naples and beyond, and Jewish Federation. Each year, we receive vital support from each part of our village. We simply couldn’t do it without you! Thank you all.

In January, the Religious School was awarded a substantial grant for scholarships and programming from the Jewish Federation of Collier County. We want to truly thank them for their support and generosity. Preschool News Todah Rabah Jewish Federation!

T

he Jewish Federation of Collier County has once again pledged their support to Temple Shalom Preschool. Through a very generous contribution, TSP will be able to give financial aid to the Jewish families that want to be part of our Temple Shalom Preschool family, but may need some assistance. In addition to earmarking funds for the regular school year TSP experience, the Federation Seyla Cohen has expanded their support to our incredible summer programs, Camp Shalom and Camp Einstein. And just to round out our already spectacular program, they have allotted funds for some very special cultural Preschool programs. As the director of Temple Shalom Preschool, I would like to express a personal “Thank You” to the Director Federation for this much appreciated grant.

Next School Year We experienced so much growth in the last few months that we welcomed two more teachers to our TSP family. Our waiting list is growing! We feel so blessed and are extremely proud of our outstanding staff for going above and beyond to ensure every student has the TSP Experience.

Also in February, registration opens up for Temple Shalom Preschool for the upcoming school year. Temple Shalom Preschool has been distinguished for many years as a top preschool in Naples. Its programs for children ages birth - 5 are top-quality, dedicated to preparing a firm foundation for students entering kindergarten and successive school years. Beginning with its “Baby and Me” and “Mommy, Me, and More” programs, children begin their formative years in a safe, wholesome, academically challenging environment, conducive to promoting self-esteem, confidence, and individuality. Its dedicated and well-trained staff provides a caring and loving atmosphere in which each child flourishes and grows to meet his or her full potential. Enrichment in science, art, technology, storytelling, puppetry, drama, STEM, gardening/nutrition, music, fitness, and foreign language is offered. General sign-up becomes available as space permits to the public once current families have had a chance to enroll their children.

Health-Safety Day/Open House Once again Temple Shalom Preschool is hosting its annual Health-Safety Day/Open House on Sunday, February 14th from 11am to 2pm. This is a very special activity-packed day-long program educating our young citizens about health and safety within our community. Various community helpers come to present awareness about their individual departments. The children enjoy seeing fire trucks up close and personal. They are able to climb on board and view fire fighter’s gear and equipment.

EMTs show up in their ambulances for the children to have a clear view of what is inside the vehicles. The police department brings their mascot, McGruff the Crime Dog, teaching the children about combating crime in the area. Water safety, a major concern for parents in the area, is reinforced. Domestic animal services is another presenter along with Smokey the Bear from the Department of Forestry. Not to mention the rock climbing wall and the bounce house bring a lot of fun and excitement to the children as well as riding the ponies around our campus. Health-Safety Day is an event open to the general public and is a welcome and well-received program each year.

At Temple Shalom Preschool, we follow good nutritional eating habits and children are taught about appropriate portion size, the nutritional value of certain foods, and the importance of including fruits and vegetables with every meal. This year, we are adding this important aspect to our Safety day, making it an even better event by introducing Health education, healthy foods, a chance to see and taste our own TSP garden fruits and vegetables and even participate in a fitness class. Parents will also have a chance to tour our beautiful Preschool and meet our teachers. Children will have fun listening to a story in our famous Storyland Children’s Library, singing with our music teacher, checking out our brand new and futuristic Technology Lab, doing experiments in our Professor Einstein’s Laboratorium, having their face painted, jumping in the Bounce House, riding on a pony or climbing on the rock wall!

Sisterhood News

M

y family moved into our new home in December, and I am still unpacking boxes and deciding where to put things. I thought it would be helpful to give myself a deadline for having everything where I want it, so we decided to have a small housewarming party on February 25th. Since my husband and Debra Antzis I have been married and have had our Sisterhood own home for fifteen years now, we do not need or want any of the traditional President “housewarming gifts.” Instead, we thought we’d ask that our guests make a gift to a charity in lieu of any gift that they might wish to bring. Since I am president of Sisterhood, that’s the charity we picked ;-).

That got me thinking about Sisterhood, Temple, new beginnings and the importance of nurturing my relationships as things around me change. I realized I would like to incorporate Sisterhood and my Temple Community into this new chapter in our lives in an active, dynamic way. So instead of a small party for a few people, we’re inviting all of you to our housewarming: Please come help “warm” our new home with the good wishes of our friends and community.

As always, your support helps fund Sisterhood’s annual gift of $15,000 to the Religious School, and the other Temple programs and improvements that Sisterhood contributes to, including the renovation of theTemple’s garden, live streaming of services, and installing a hearing loop in the sanctuary. Special thanks to Carole Flegel, who chaired the event and did an outstanding job.

Finally, we are forming the nominating committee to help determine the slate of Sisterhood officers for those positions on the Sisterhood Board that are coming open at the end of this term. If you’d like to serve on the nominating committee, or are interested in being on the Sisterhood Board, please let me know.

Tikkun Olam Council - Social Action & Social Justice at Temple Shalom Together…We Can Repair the World The first Tikkun Olam Council Temple-wide meeting took place on Sunday January 10th. The successful goal of this meeting was to gain new members and to seek ideas for programs and activities that might be of interest to the Temple membership.

Our principal focus is on expanding Temple Shalom’s social action program, and in supplementing the many things now participated in by Temple members, including our multi-faceted Mitzvah Day, outreach by the Caring Committee, the Men’s Club and Sisterhood and the Blue BOGO bags project, just to name a few.

Of the numerous project ideas considered, we did vote to continue, under TOC auspices, a holiday luncheon for the visually impaired that was previously hosted at Temple Shalom by the NCJW. We also decided to focus on exploring and then developing volunteer opportunities; one working with a food bank, a second working in a discrete area with the JCFS, and a third doing something to benefit and help the Immokalee farm workers. Further we will similarly investigate a possible beach clean-up project as a potential intergenerational program. All

of these will be potential handson projects that would be made available to Temple members.

Evaluation and consideration of other possible projects will remain on our agenda.

We have been members of Temple Shalom for 17 years, and over that time, we’ve been very involved as volunteers as well as through financial contributions. We understand that dues do not cover all the costs the Temple absorbs. We feel that by giving to Above and Beyond, we are helping to ensure that the Temple is maintained and that all the services it provides will continue. We feel very fortunate to have wonderful clergy and staff, and a beautiful building for all of our programs. We give because this is our community and we want to continue to support it.

Another Successful Mitzvah Day!!

On January 24th, Temple Shalom was abuzz with activity. Almost 300 Temple members, friends and supporters turned out to make a difference in our community. After a delicious breakfast supplied by the Men’s Club, Mitzvah Day kicked off with a rally in the sanctuary. That motivation carried over into the day’s activities includding packing meals for Meals of Hope (nearly 50,000 meals were packed!), packing toiletries and school supplies for homeless children in Collier County, packing the Purple Bags for cancer patients, baking dog biscuits for the Humane Society and writing thank you notes and cards for First Responders and IDF soldiers. Also on hand was the Blood Mobile which saw one of their busiest sessions here at Temple Shalom with so many people showing up to donate blood. Joining us this year for the first time was The Gift of Life, an organization that, with a simply cheek swab, matches potential bone marrow donors with those in need. New this year for Mitzvah Day were the clothing drive, which brought in a lot of clothing for St. Matthews House and GoodWill, and the packing of Shabbat Bags.

­HOME SHABBAT DINNERS with STRINGS ATTACHED! Temple Shalom’s Home Shabbat Dinner Committee, a One Family activity, announces a new twist to home-held Shabbat Dinners – Shabbat Dinner Trains! This is how it works: Each host couple, family, or single will invite one, two, or more other couple(s), family(ies), or single(s) to their home for Shabbat Dinner…with a string attached. The invitees can be friends of the hosts or someone they do not know or know well (a friendly environment for developing new relationships!) The string is that the invited guests are asked to host a Shabbat Dinner in their home, with their guests also being asked to host a Shabbat Dinner in their home, and so on, creating a string of Shabbat Dinners – a Shabbat Dinner Train! The trains will be colorfully displayed in the Temple. Each host family name (with permission) will appear on a train car, the cars being connected by… strings!

Hosts select a date that is convenient for them, Hosts select the number of guests to invite, deciding whether to invite one, two, or more other single(s), couple(s), or family(ies).

Hosts choose the style of their dinner – COOK OUT, CARRY OUT, POT LUCK, CHINESE, ITALIAN, ISRAELI, or TRADITIONAL, etc.

Remember, this is an opportunity to share Shabbat with other Temple families in a relaxed home environment. Including someone you don’t know well reflects the “audacious hospitality” that is Temple Shalom! Hosts can contact Marilyn Dano (information below) for names of members who want to participate in this program.

Hosts need to notify Marilyn Dano for their dinner to be a part of an official Shabbat Dinner Train.

Those who have already hosted Shabbat Dinners will be included in the train displays. Of course, if hosts choose to invite a larger group without strings, as was done in the past, they will also be included in the displays.

Scholar in Residence Weekend with Prof. Daniel C. Matt This year we were honored to have Dr. Daniel C. Matt as our Scholar in Residence. A renowned expert in Zohar and Kabbalah (Jewish Mysticism), Professor Matt regaled the community with incredible presentations on Shekhinah: The Feminine Half of God, The Zohar: Mystical Masterpiece of Kabbalah, God and the Big Bang: Discovering Harmony Between Science & Spirituality and Raising Sparks: Finding God in the Material World.

Endowment Corner

W

hy should I make a gift to the Temple Endowment Fund instead of a gift to the Temple to be used now? I have been asked this question several times recently. Of course, there is nothing wrong with making a gift to be used for current expenses. But when we make an endowment gift we create a legacy that may last long after we are gone. That is because an endowment is specifically designed to remain essentially intact, with income only available for Temple expenses, so that the fund will have a chance to grow and hopefully, outlive us all!

Many individuals make annual Above and Beyond contributions that help pay important current operating expenses, notably the religious school, clergy and staff salaries, maintenance and all the other expenses needed to run the Temple and its programs. While no one wants to contemplate it, all of us are mortal. So what happens to that gift when you die? The assistance given by your annual contributions stops. But if you make a gift NOW to the endowment fund, it may have years to grow and earn dividends that will be a source for revenue generation to run the Temple for years to come. A successful endowment may live on in perpetuity, serving to substitute for your annual Above and Beyond gift long after you are gone. This will benefit our children and grandchildren, and all other future congregants of Temple Shalom.

If you care about the future of our Temple and of Reform Judaism in Southwest Florida, you can make no better gift than to the Temple Shalom Endowment Fund. Gifts of any size are welcome, but a minimum $10,000 current gift allows you, if you wish, to set up a Temple Shalom Endowment in your own name, your family or parents’ names.

To illustrate with my own example, I am pleased to have established the Temple Shalom Low Family Endowment to honor the memory of my parents, Alfred and Rose Low. They fled Nazi-occupied Austria with little more than their education and their wits, had the skill and luck to get here, raised a family and had successful professional lives in the United States.

The Temple Shalom Endowment Fund offers customized giving, dedicated to helping every donor find the right opportunity for him or her, whether it’s a one-time gift or a pledge to be paid over several years, naming your own fund or making a gift dedicated to a specific cause. Showing We Care

Contributions to Temple Shalom funds are wonderful ways to show your appreciation of family and friends, to celebrate happy occasions and to honor the memories of loved ones. We suggest a minimum donation of chai ($18.00). With a minimum donation of chai, a notice of your gift will be sent to the honoree and mention will be published monthly in The Voice.

Operations

General Fund: Donations used for operating expenses.

Tree of Life: Each ‘Rock’ and ‘Star of David’ is a donation of $540.00; each ‘Leaf ’ is $240.00. The contribution must be received in its entirety before engraving is ordered.

Burn The Mortgage Fund: Established by Gerry and Pearl Sugarman to reduce payment of any existing mortgage.

Worship

Memorial Fund: Donations made in honor of a loved one who has passed.

William Freschel Kiddush Fund: All donations help provide Kiddush Lunch each Saturday following worship services.

A $150 donation is considered to be a sponsorship to honor a special someone or occasion.

Flower Fund: Provides Bimah flowers each Shabbat. A $150.00 donation is considered to be a sponsorship in memory or in honor of a special someone or occasion.

Mitzvah Baskets Fund: A $100.00 donation will purchase several hundred dollars of food for JFCS. Dr. Philip & Shirley Gilbert Music Fund: Donations are used for the enhancement of music at Temple Shalom.

Endowment

Religious School Fund: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for Jewish learning in both Sunday and Hebrew Schools.

Endowment Fund: Donations help to secure the future, enrich the programs and provide for emergency needs of the congregation.

Religious School Enrichment Fund: Donations augment the Religious School budget to enrich the education of our children.

Youth Activities Fund: Donations provide financial support for children of our congregation to attend Camp Coleman, to take part in regional/national youth conventions, and to experience a summer in Israel.

Preschool

Preschool Fund: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for the Preschool.

Preschool Enrichment Fund: The enhancement of curriculum, educational programs and experiences.

Arby Lipman Children's Library: For the purchase of children and adolescent books and magazine subscriptions, and supplies.

Jack and Charlotte Ward Family Children's Music Shelf: Audio and video musical tapes for children.
