Adam F. Miller The Time to Learn is… Now Last month we celebrated the installation of Rabbi Boxman, and with it the tremendous growth of our adult education program. While we continue to add more opportunities for study and engagement, I often hear individuals lament that they are either too old, or too inexperienced to engage in Jewish study. Our tradition presents a different view in Pirke Avot, “One who studies for the first time, is like ink on a new parchment. While one who studies after many experiences, is comparable to ink written on scraped parchment.” Ink on new parchment has the advantage of being written on a clear and clean background. Ink written on scraped parchment from the lines and lessons of earlier writings, so that the latest version is an improvement on what has come before. Thus, we see that learning at any skill level has its blessings.

One should also remember the story of Cato the Elder, who started studying a new language at the age of 80, his students questioned why he would begin such a large endeavor at that time of his life. Cato replied, “Why not now? This is the youngest I will ever be again.” Truly, there is no time like the present to immerse oneself in new learning. In the spirit of Cato, we find ourselves blessed to be given plentiful opportunities to learn and immerse ourselves regardless of age. Here are some of the ways that you can learn: • Attend one of Rabbi Perman’s Sunday School for Adults lectures on February 2 and 9. Join Rabbi Perman as he explores the question of Jewish identity. Are we a nation? A religion? Something else entirely? All are welcome for these sessions.

• Explore modern Israel through literature in the Israel Book Reading Group. The next meeting takes place on February 24, and will examine Be Strong and of Good Courage: How Israel’s Most Important Leaders Shaped its Destiny by Dennis Ross and David Makovsky. Contact Dr. Michael Rubner for more information.

• Learn with our Scholar-in-Residence, Rabbi Andrea Weiss. The current provost at Hebrew Union College (and my professor of Bible studies!), Rabbi Weiss co-edited the Women’s Torah Commentary. March 20-22 she will take us on a journey through our sacred texts, finding modern connections and meaning for today’s world. This program is made possible by the generosity of Shirly (z”l) and Henry Kraus and the Kraus Family Scholar in Residence Fund.

• Participate in the world’s largest book club known as Daf Yomi. Daf Yomi is the tradition of reading one page of Talmud every day over seven and a half years! The last cycle of reading finished in early January, and a new one began. New to Talmud or text study? No problem! Visit www.myjewishlearning.com where you can sign up to receive daily updates on the text, and links to English editions. We are gathering anyone interested in studying together to meet monthly and explore the texts. Email me at amiller@naplestemple.org for more details.

CANTOR’S MESSAGE

Donna Azu This past January I was blessed to have my mentor, Cantor Evan Kent, visit Temple Shalom as our first Artist-in-Residence and in February, two more of my cantorial colleagues will be joining us in Naples!

On Friday evening, February 14, Cantor Barbara Ostfeld will be the guest speaker at our erev Shabbat service, sharing with us her experience of being the first female cantor ordained from the Hebrew Union College as well as her recently published memoir, “The Ballad of Barbi Prim”. Just this past November, Cantor Ostfeld was honored at the URJ Biennial in Chicago and was presented with the 2019 Debbie Friedman Award for Contributions to Jewish Music. At the ceremony, my colleague and President of the American Conference of Cantors, Claire Franco, shared the following words about Cantor Ostfeld, “Decades ago, Barbara planted her roots in the soil of a calling that was not open to women. Her passion, her bravery and yes, her chutzpah, allowed the women that followed, like me, to carve our initials in the trunk of our profession.” It will truly be an honor for me to share the bimah with Cantor Ostfeld and to hear her story.

In addition, Cantor Susan Berkson will be joining us on Sunday, February 23 at 4:00pm to share with us a recital of Yiddish music. Cantor Berkson was ordained in 1989 at the Hebrew Union College School of Sacred Music in New York.

She was the cantor at Temple Emanuel in Kensington, MD and has also served as the cantor of Temple Adas Shalom, Havre de Grace, MD and Congregation Or Chadash, Germantown, MD. Besides teaching private voice at her home studio, she is part of the adjunct faculty at Howard Community College in Columbia, MD, and has recorded her first CD of Jewish liturgical and life cycle music, “Life as a Song”. Cantor Berkson has performed in venues such as the National Cathedral in Washington, Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center, Town Hall in New York, The Shrine in Los Angeles, and performed a Yiddish art song recital for the noontime series at The Church of the Epiphany in Washington, DC. The recital is free of charge and open to the entire community. I look forward to seeing you at these wonderful programs!

There are many ways to support Temple Shalom, both as a volunteer and as a donor. We appreciate you all! As you know by now, our major fundraising efforts are focused on two campaigns: Above & Beyond and an annual fundraiser.

While they are both critical to fill the gap between L’Shalom pledges and our operating expenses, I would like to remind you about two other special ways to make a difference in our community.

Jewish tradition celebrates the Torah as the “Tree of Life” that bonds one generation to the next. For many generations, Jews have made it a custom to sanctify their joyous events with a charitable donation. Mitzvah Day and Young Children Acts of kindness, charity, and doing mitzvot are significant themes in our preschool program for very young children.

From questions of objectivity and fairness between little friends (“Why did she get more than I did?”) to ethical decisions and behavior (“I want that toy, and I am taking it out of your hands right now!”), children are engaged in a daily struggle with ethics. So then, it follows, early childhood is the perfect time to teach children about the ethical concepts of charity and doing mitzvot from the Jewish perspective.

Mitzvahs, or mitzvot (plural), may be loosely defined as “good deeds.” Children of all ages recognize that helping others through charity evens out the playing field between people, and that repairing the world – Tikkun Olam – is a goal to strive towards.

Each year at Temple Shalom’s Mitzvah Day, children and families have an opportunity to perform acts of charity

together. With our volunteer parents and preschool teachers there to assist, families on Mitzvah Day baked biscuits for the doggies at the Humane Society, sorted and packed toiletries for the Collier County Public Schools Department of Homeless Children, and packed crayons and other small toys for the children at Golisano Pediatric Oncology Department. Everybody enjoyed the chance to work side by side to help others. It was fun and engaging!

At Temple Shalom Preschool, we are helping children understand that one of the best ways to help make our world a better place is to share the resources we have with others who don’t have them.

LEARN WITH US The Sunday School for Adults 2020 Rabbi Emeritus James Perman Two Consecutive Sundays February 2 & 9 at 10:30am

Our Jewish Identity Crisis This year’s Sunday School for Adults centers on an open question that never seems to get answered: It is the mystery of Jewish identity. Are we a nation? Are we a religion? What about Jews who live in countries other than Israel? What about Jews who don’t believe in Judaism? Are they still Jewish? This question has been asked and discussed for as long as I can remember. We should also ask, “What is it that people see when they see us?” Or, “How do we even see ourselves?” The latest response to this question recently came from an unlikely source — 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

We have been labeled at various times as a religion, a nationality, a people, a civilization, an ethnicity, even a race. That’s not entirely surprising. What makes the question interesting is that the answers come from such disparate places — sources that do not invite comparison.

The arguments have been going on for so long that no one is even sure when they started.

What’s more, the question gets asked each time for entirely different reasons.

So after everyone has spoken, who is right? That’s what we’re going to talk about. We’ll look at this issue historically, spiritually, psychologically, philosophically, sociologically, politically and any other angle we can imagine. You’ll be challenged to suspend your preconceived notions and have fun while you’re doing it.

It’s a big issue. It isn’t just interesting, it’s seriously important for every Jew to understand.

Besides, when people ask us questions, it’s good to have answers. And when we respond with those answers, we sometimes find that they’re saying far more than we anticipated.

So I invite you to be part of this conversation, or at least sit back and enjoy the discussion.

Sunday School for Adults takes place on two Sunday mornings, February 2 and 9, at 10:30am.

It runs about an hour. No charge, of course. Open to all, of course. And, of course, I’ll be happy to see you!

Rabbi Andrea Weiss, Ph. D. Rabbi Andrea L. Weiss, Ph.D. is the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Provost and Associate Professor of Bible at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. She received a B.A. in English from the University of California at Berkeley in 1987, was ordained at HUC-JIR in New York in 1993, and earned her doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania in 2004. She is co-editor of American Values, Religious Voices: 100 Days, 100 Letters (University of Cincinnati Press, 2019) and associate editor of The Torah: A Women’s Commentary (CCAR Press, 2008). Her research focuses on metaphor, biblical poetry, and biblical conceptions of God.

Happy January from BBYO! In December, Naples BBYO participated in numerous fun and engaging programs. The first of which was an all-boys sleepover that encompassed AZAA sports programming, pool time, games of all kinds and quite a bit of pizza. The following day at Temple Shalom, BBYO Naples hosted a Latke Cookoff event open to kids and teens in 6th-12th grade. The event reached over 20 children/teens and was a blast for all those that attended. A special thank you to Temple Shalom for allowing us to use their space, as well as a thank you to our guest judges: Bobbie Katz, Co-President of the Naples BBYO Board of Directors, Andrea Schlieber of Alexander Muss High School in Israel, and Hannah Castro, Madricha of Mishpacha BBG (Naples girls chapter). In December, our B’Nai Brith Girls (BBGs) hosted elections. Six BBGs now make up our Spring Term Mishpacha Board. Mazal tov to those elected! And finally, many of our teens gathered at the Jewish Federation’s Community Chanukah Celebration on December 23. All in all, December was a great month for Naples BBYO. This month, you will find Naples hosting J-Serve, BBYO’s international day of service, on Sunday, February 2. Naples and Ft. Myers BBYO will be taking part in the Touch Down Run 5k. We will be running to raise awareness for the Children’s Miracle Network, NFR’s stand up cause for 2019-20. Join us on February 2 at 6:15am at North Collier Regional Park. For middle schoolers in grades 6 - 8, on Sunday, February 23, from 12:30pm to 3:00pm, we will be taking in a Spring Training baseball game at Hammond Field. CONNECT WITH US “Shalom Chaverim” means “hello friends” in Hebrew. Shalom Chaverim is also the name of an exciting volunteer opportunity at Temple Shalom where Temple volunteers welcome members and guests who come to Temple Shalom for worship, learning and social opportunities.

Temple Shalom is focused on inclusivity, diversity, openness and welcoming, and as such, Shalom Chaverim is a cadre of greeters welcoming and assisting members and guests to our Temple for Erev Shabbat and High Holy Day services. Aside from welcoming people, we help them with their name tags or badges, provide directions, assist with seating, prayer books, or hearing assisted devices.

If you are interested in volunteering and becoming a part of Shalom Chaverim, please contact Andy Karpman at andy.karpman@gmail.com. Signing up to be a greeter in the lobby or in the Sanctuary is easy and only takes a few minutes.

BEADING FOR BETTERMENT February 12, March 11 & 18 at 12:30pm Beading for Betterment is a project of Temple Shalom, designed to build on and expand our Temple’s commitment to support our greater community. Participants are invited to bead necklaces for children who attend the Guadalupe Center in Immokalee to give to their mothers and grandmothers as gifts. The cost is $18, free if you bring your own supplies.

Bereavement Group for Members of the Temple Shalom Community In the spirit of our tradition, which calls us to perform the mitzvah of Nihum Avelim (comforting mourners), Temple Shalom will be offering a Bereavement Support Group for people who are grieving for a loved one. The group, which will observe confidentiality of communication, will meet on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month from 9:30am to 11:00pm.

Group size is limited to twelve people. The facilitators, Arline Kaplan, Ph.D., and Leslie Wasserman, M.A., are members of Temple Shalom. Both Arline and Leslie, licensed in New York and Michigan respectively, have extensive experience with groups and with people experiencing grief and loss. “We are hopeful that sharing our stories with empathic, compassionate others will allow some healing, solace and peace into our lives. We can each be the gift that can possibly help to heal the wound.”

Havurah Happenings Debbie Zvibleman

My husband Barry and I were invited to join Havurah Kulanu, for their annual New Year celebration. This havurah has been in existence for twenty years. When I first introduced the idea of havurot over twenty years ago, they were one of the first groups to be formed. Over the years they have shared many life-cycle events including weddings, anniversaries, sickness, and unfortunately, the death of a member. They have been an extended family, being there for one another, participating in many Temple events, and also served on committees and on the Board.

When you form a havurah, it takes time and commitment to keep it going, making sure that you set up a schedule of events and put them on the calendar so that you can participate. Find out what everyone is interested in and how often you want to meet. We have several havurot that have been together for many years and they will tell you that being a member of a havurah has been a very special experience, like being a part of an extended family.

If you think you may want to join a havurah, feel free to contact Ana Maria Tamargo in the Temple office for an application. We are currently looking to fill an Empty Nester havurah for couples that recently sent their kids off to college.

Vision Luncheon

The Tikkun Olam Council hosted the annual Collier Association for the Visually Impaired Luncheon on December 9 at Temple Shalom. Members of the Tikkun Olam Council, National Council of Jewish Women and other members of Temple Shalom greeted guests, helped prepare the food, set the tables and acted as hosts and hostesses for our guests. It is a wonderful tradition that has been going on for forty years in our community and will continue for many more years to come!

With her parents being from Northern NJ and Scotland, Julia has been globetrotting since birth, having made over a dozen transatlantic trips! She is a competitive gymnast and took up trumpet last year. Her love for learning, family, and friends is matched only by her huge heart. She is touched to see family and friends come from all over to celebrate her milestone.

We are having some night programs for all ages. Women who work and women who have young children can get out at night and spend some time with their friends.

MEN’S CLUB Happy New Year. If you are like me, you are wondering, “Where Ed’s picture is?” and “Who is this new guy?” After thirteen years as President of the Men’s Club, Ed Cohen has decided to take a rest. He is definitely going to be a tough act to follow. We all owe him a debt of gratitude for his dedication and accomplishments. Luckily, he has agreed to stay on as a member of the Board of Directors so we will have ready access to his expertise.

In addition to thanking Ed for all he has done, we definitely need to thank Lori for the support she has provided to Ed over all of these years.

With respect to the new guy; my name is Ron Yasbin.

My wife Sherrill and I moved permanently to Naples from St. Louis, during Hurricane Irma. While originally from Brooklyn, we have moved around considerably since we met as undergraduates at Penn State. Our stops have included Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Nevada and Missouri. I am a microbial and molecular geneticist who has spent over forty years in academia as a professor, teacher, and researcher before being seduced by the dark side and becoming a dean. We know that we made the right choice in moving to Naples and have really enjoyed the Temple Shalom Community.

The Men’s Club has already started off the new year by supporting Mitzvah Day and by providing breakfast for the volunteers of this important event. We plan to have an active calendar for the rest of the year as well. Our annual Dinner Theatre at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre will

be on March 14. The show will be Kinky Boots.

We will be having Deli Night on April 29 which will feature a speaker from AIPAC. The joint luncheon with the Sisterhood will be on February 11. We are joining with Adult Education in co-sponsoring two lectures on the genetic origins of the Jewish People and how this has impacted health within the community (see the ad on page 8).

We will be providing financial assistance for the Purim carnival and for the student RAC trip to DC. We have also begun discussions with BBYO on how we can build on last year’s cooperation to enhance support for Jewish youth in our community. More announcements of activities will be forthcoming. Tikkun Olam Council Chair Ken Goldstein Another Successful Mitzvah Day at Temple Shalom!

Temple Shalom was buzzing with activity on Sunday morning, January 12. Children, teens and adults came together for Mitzvah Day, engaging in tikkun olam and accomplishing some amazing acts of kindness. In just three hours the Temple Shalom Family...

• Packaged 50,000 meals for Meals of Hope • Packed backpacks with school supplies for the children at the Guadalupe Center • Beaded 36 necklaces for the Beading for Betterment project benefitting the Children of the Guadalupe Center • Prepared 80 “purple bags” with snacks and games to give to children going through chemo • Organized over 100 bags of toiletries for homeless and foster children in Collier County • Donated 129 pints of blood • Knitted shawls for hospice patients as part of the “knitzvah for mitzvah” activity • Sorted donated socks, underwear and sneakers for Laces of Love and Grace Place • Baked numerous dog biscuits for our furry friends at the animal shelter • Planted a beautiful butterfly garden outside the school entrance as part of the Butterflies of Hope project NEW this year, a group of Temple Shalom members participated in Empty Bowls during the afternoon on Mitzvah Day. They painted bowls that will be used to raise funds to help eliminate hunger in the Naples community.

Many thanks to all those who volunteered, donated and organized this event as well as the Men’s Club for a delicious breakfast and to the David and Lillian Thalenfeld Fund.
