From Rabbi Miller You may be familiar with the short story written

by Loren Eiseley called, “The Star Thrower.”

Adapted numerous times over the years, it is the tale of two people on a beach at dawn. A number of starfish have washed up on the shore.

One person is walking along, picking them up, one at a time, and throwing the starfish back in.

Another person sees this, and asks, “Why are you doing this? You can’t save them all.” The person throwing starfish pauses, and then responds, “I may not save them all, but it matters to the ones I do save.”

That story resonates with the Talmudic teaching, “You are not obligated to complete the work, neither are you free to desist from it.”

We may not be responsible to fix the world by ourselves, but we have an obligation to do what we can to make it a better place. Every year our Temple Family uses this principle on Mitzvah Day – as we gather together to make a difference in our community and our world. Every act we do on Mitzvah Day matters to someone whose life is made better by our efforts.

On January 26th, we will pack 50,000 meals for the hungry, gather

school supplies and toiletries for homeless students, bake biscuits for animals at the shelter, as well as many other activities. Our work on Mitzvah Day cannot be done all at once. It is a step by step process, particularly in collecting the funds, materials and resources that will be used or distributed on Mitzvah Day. We are asking members to meet one need each week – as we focus our collection efforts. Watch the weekly e-mail each week as we highlight one area – such as travel toiletries, backpacks, or school supplies.

Mitzvah Day 2014 will be part of an exciting weekend of social justice, which includes our scholar in residence, Ruth Messinger. Ruth is the executive director of American Jewish World Service (www. ajws.org), the world’s leading Jewish organization working to end poverty and realize human rights in the developing world. Inspired

by Jewish values, Ruth was a national leader in the movement to end the genocide in Sudan, has worked to fight global hunger, and is now addressing women’s rights on an international level.

Join us for an inspiring weekend of learning and acting toward tikkun olam – repairing our world one good deed at a time.

From Cantor Azu When do we have our early Shabbat service?

Will the service be geared only towards children?

Will there be birthday and anniversary blessings?

Why am I so confused?

Several years ago not long after Rabbi Miller and I started at Temple Shalom we instituted an early service at 6pm the first Friday of the month (October-May) called “Shir Joy Shabbat”. This service was created as an effort to encourage families with young children to attend services before their little ones need to get to bed. “Shir” having a double meaning. In English the word Sheer meaning pure or complete (in the case JOY!) and In Hebrew Shir meaning song. A service of Great Joy and Song!

During this one hour long early service, we have an opportunity to pray with our younger generation as they help to take part in the service.

One misconception is that the “Shir Joy Shabbat” service is only for families with children. This is not the case. Adults are welcome and ENCOURAGED to attend. There is nothing better than seeing young and old singing and praying together as one community!

What can you expect at these services? There will be lots of uplifting

music and dancing meant to bring Shabbat peace, rest and joy after a long week. There will be a brief inspirational message or story from Rabbi Miller and there will be a birthday blessing for those celebrating birthdays during that particular month. We also invite up to the bimah any couples celebrating an anniversary that month. You will have an opportunity to tell us how many years you’ve been married.

All celebrants will receive a special blessing together.

What about the rest of the month when services begin at 7:30 p.m.?

Is my child welcome? We know that the 7:30pm start time doesn’t help with an early bedtime, however you are not required to stay for an entire service. Let me say that again a different way: you are not being judged if you leave a service early. If your child can only handle a half hour, then feel free to stay for only that half hour. The idea is to expose your child to Jewish worship…we want them to have a positive experience in our sanctuary!

I know it’s hard, but thank you for what you do when you bring your children to Temple. Please know that your family, with all of its noise, struggle, commotion, and joy are not simply tolerated, you are a vital part of the community gathered in worship. Let us celebrate Shabbat together, with all of our joys, with all of our noise, and with all of our love for our families, for our community and for God. B’shalom!

“FROM BIMAH TO BROADWAY” WILL STAR FIVE CANTORS IN CONCERT

When the word “cantor” comes to mind, you immediately picture this ordained clergyperson leading prayers and singing from the bimah. Now expand your vision to include all the music genres that a professionally-trained singer might present: Not only sacred music but also Yiddish favorites, Israeli folk songs, pop, opera and—oh, yes—Broadway musicals.

Temple Shalom will shine a spotlight on not three but five fabulous voices in a concert that will offer something for every taste. On Sunday evening, February 23, our own Cantor Donna Azu will gather four other ordained cantors for a spectacular concert titled “From Bimah to Broadway.”

Joining Cantor Azu will be Carrie Barry from Wellington, Florida; Aaron Kaplan and Daniel Mutlu from Houston, Texas; and Star Trompeter from Chappaqua, New York. Their glorious voices will lift our spirits as they present familiar liturgical pieces by Naomi Shemer to old standards by Gershwin and Porter.

The concert will be Temple Shalom’s major fundraiser for 2014. Promotional materials are sure to lure music-lovers throughout the area, so it would be wise to return the reply card with your check as soon as you receive the invitation.

Here is a preview of ticket categories, so you can consider your decision before the mail delivers your invitation in early January.

On Sunday, January 26, 2014 we will join together and in a single day, empowered by equal parts of joy and determination, we will do our part to improve the world. From one end of the Temple to the other, rooms will be filled with men, women, and children of all ages who come together with one goal in mind – to give to others. It’s Mitzvah Day! Once again we will man the Meals of Hope assembly line, packaging thousands of meals for families in our community who are in need.

We will put on our hairnets and work in teams as rice or macaroni flies wildly through the air on our way to preparing 50,000 meals!

Our job is to supply monetary support and labor, and Meals of Hope brings in all of the food supplies and materials we will need. The food we package costs us approximately 20 cents per meal. Your early and

We will sort through stacks of school supplies and fill book bags so that homeless children can be prepared to learn, and dig through thousands of shampoos and soaps and toothbrushes we collected so these children can feel clean and proud. We will lovingly sort the wide array of items that have been donated for the Shelter for Abused Women and Children and enthusiastically knead dough to make dog biscuits.

On Mitzvah Day we share a sense of purpose. We are all contributing to a greater good, and as a result we stand a little taller. We are a congregation of warm hearts and loving hands. So many of you work to improve the world every day. Your touch is felt throughout our community on an on-going basis, and we are all the better for it. Still, one day a year our Temple family congregates in one place at one time and we make magic happen. The positive feelings fill us and motivate us and empower us.

From the Religious School Director

by Caren Plotkin At Temple Shalom we strive to keep our teens connected to their Jewish heritage through various programs and activities. Our Confirmation program for 8th through 10th grade students consists of two components: a grade specific curriculum and participation in our Madrichim (student assistant) and leadership building program.

Each Sunday morning begins with a thirty minute session of skill building and leadership training. Instruction is concrete and realistic as students discuss various learning modalities and review classroom scenarios so they are prepared to be effective student aides. Role playing reinforces these skills and teaches the students how to be leaders. The training builds confidence that carries over into their own school classrooms and extracurricular activities.

In eighth grade, an informal setting sets the tone discussion topics that include social issues, peer and family relationships, tikkun olam (repair of the world), and g’milut chasadim (acts of loving kindness.)

Current controversial issues are examined using a variety of Jewish texts and resources.

Ninth grade focuses on comparative religion through a Jewish lens.

The text book, Apples and Oranges, clearly explains each of the world’s major religions and shows where Judaism is both similar and different from them.

Our 10th grade Confirmation class is designed to help the students develop a more adult understanding of Judaism. Our Rabbi leads the class in discussions that include the life cycle and holiday views on God, ethics and traditions and practice. The course concludes with a class Confirmation Service and celebration on Shavuot.

Our students in 11th and 12th grades participate in Senior Study,

which meets every first Tuesday evening of each month. The year’s course includes discussions on various areas of Jewish beliefs and practices, social action, current events and issues that are challenging to our High School students. The curriculum is student-driven, reflecting the students’ interests and relevancy and helps to prepare them for the next steps after they graduate.

The Madrichim program, for students in grades 8 through 12, serves as an opportunity for our students to experience working with younger students of all ages. Often a teen will request a particular age level to work with and will find that they really enjoy another age group once they are working with them. Many of the students go on to assist or teach Sunday or Hebrew School classes in college, and some even pursue Education degrees in college. Everyone benefits greatly from the Madrichim program. The teachers appreciate the student’s help, the madrich learns teaching skills from the teacher, and the younger students form a valuable friendship of respect and guidance from the older teens.

In addition to the Religious School program, our teens are encouraged to participate in NFTY (The Reform Judaism’s National Federation of Temple Youth) Regional events and in BBYO (B’nai Brith Youth Organization). Both of these organizations offer our teens an opportunity to connect with other Jewish teens through local and regional activities and events. Through these events they develop social and leadership skills that will assist them into their adult Jewish lives.

Yes, our teens are our future, and it is our goal to give them the knowledge they need and to teach them the lessons of our heritage so they may, in turn, pass it to their own children in the future, just as our parents did for us.

Preschool on Parade

by Seyla Cohen, Preschool Director A rare occurrence... This year Hanukah falls at the time as Thanksgiving. So with that in mind, students at Temple Shalom Preschool have been busy preparing for both holidays. Pilgrims, Israelites, latkes, turkey, menorahs, stuffing, dreidels and sailing ships. Their enthusiastic minds are taking it all in, sorting things out, and loving every minute of it. Holidays are all about instilling traditions and creating memories. During the preschool years, little ones absorb it all and form reminiscences that last a lifetime. At Temple Shalom we not only provide an outstanding education for children, but assume the roles of ally, supporter, and helper to all our families. As children progress through the preschool, they learn traditions so important for creating a sense of belonging, memories, and family history. Participating in these occasions gives us all something to look forward to each year.

When such customs are passed down from generation to generation, they provide us the time needed to escape from our ordinary routines; so important to our health and sense of well-being. The holidays

help to define a place in time and remind us of the importance of preserving precious beliefs, ideals, and principles.

On November 12th, TSP opened its brand new technology lab. The Grand Opening celebration was a huge success. Both parents and children participated in the fun Techy planned activities and were able to tour the futuristic setting and the state-of-the-art equipment the children will have the opportunity to use. This innovative addition to the preschool is yet another example of the objective to keep up with the latest in educational improvements and to enhance the knowledge of its students.

Before we know it, the New Year will be upon us. With each passing year, as our family grows, we reflect on the progress and development that each school year brings and we realize the enormous worth that all the efforts made are worth.

We at Temple Shalom Preschool (TSP) wish all a very Happy and Healthy New Year.

Sisterhood News

by Sandy Stone, Sisterhood President Bobbi Bassewitz hit another home run for the Sisterhood on November 12 at Temple. We had over 55 people! You could hear a pin drop as Bobbi enthralled the crowd with her performance from the play “I’ll Eat Last” by John Logan. This is the 3rd year we have been lucky enough to have Bobbi accept our invitation, and we hope she can continue doing so for many years to come. Sisterhood thanks Bobbi. She was a delight to see at our luncheon.

Coming up! On December 4 we will have our annual Chanukah Tea where all the women’s organizations of Naples join together at 1 p.m. for wonderful performances by Cantor Donna Azu, Jane Galler, and our Preschool children, plus delicious desserts and coffee. We pay $5.00 at the door and the money will go to the Jewish Family and Community Services. This is a great opportunity for all of us to meet and greet others from different organizations and we look forward to seeing you all there.

As you can see, we are a very busy Sisterhood and Temple! Coming up in January, Sisterhood will present our “Stay at Home Tea.” Here is an opportunity to help your Sisterhood and also stay at home. You will receive a tea bag in the mail and we encourage you to make a donation to Sisterhood and relax at home with a cup of tea!

We’re still collecting pop tops - the top of your soda can. Did you know that the top has more metal than all of the rest of the can? The tops are recycled and the helps children with cancer through the Ronald McDonald’s House. If you have trouble removing the top, just wiggle it several times and it will be easy to remove. We thank you in advance.

What a simple way to enjoy your drink and help the children! And by the way, we are still asking you to bring your coupons from Bed Bath and Beyond, we use them to procure items for the Sisterhood kitchen.

Sisterhood is for all women of Temple Shalom, so we need your input.

Don’t forget the monthly Book Bag on the third Thursday of every month. We have a wonderful group of women who attend. We choose great books and spend a lovely couple of hours discussing them, with a facilitator. Come to the library at 1:30 p.m. on December 19 and see what we are all about.

MEALS OF HOPE Table after table will be set up in the Multi-Purpose Room, and the Meals of Hope assembly line will be back in place!

For several hours we will work together, young and old, to package thousands of meals. Each year our hard work sustains hundreds of children who receive free or reduced meals at school during the year and have nowhere to turn when school is not in session.

Please remember that we have to PAY for the food we package, and that 100% of your donation is spent on the food. There are absolutely no administrative fees.

The Shelter for Abused Women & Children works to end family violence, and to advocate for, empower, and assist those who have been victims. The Shelter appreciates your donations of NEW toys, personal and household items to assist the many people who have turned to the Shelter for guidance and security.

SAVE THOSE TRAVEL SIZE COSMETICS! Temple Shalom Preschool is collecting travel size cosmetics for donation to Student Services for Homeless Children, a program through Collier County Public Schools dedicated to the care and education of homeless children.

If you travel over the winter holidays, save as many hotel cosmetics as you can! Or, each time you visit Target, CVS, Walgreens, WalMart, etc., during your holiday shopping, pick up 2 or 3 extra tubes of travel toothpaste, deodorant or shampoo to donate. It will add up! Please look for donation boxes around the Temple. Thank you so much for your participation! The homeless children of Collier County greatly appreciate it!

SCHOOL SUPPLIES FOR HOMELESS SCHOOL CHILDREN: During this school year, over 1,000 children in Collier County have been identified as homeless. Throughout the year, these children must have their school supplies replenished. We are in desperate need of school supplies – backbags, paper, notebooks, pens, pencils, crayons, etc.

Endowment

Religious School Enrichment Fund: Donations augment the Religious School budget to enrich the education of our children.

Scholar In-Residence Endowment Fund: Supports the endowment established by Shirley and Henry Kraus. This fund enables Temple Shalom to bring visiting scholars to the Temple as an educational benefit to the membership.

Religious School: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for Jewish learning in both Sunday and Hebrew Schools.

Polster Religious School Scholarship Fund: To purchase or supplement Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Ben Calmenson Fund: Donations will be used to create sponsorships to send children to attend Camp Coleman.

Rabbi Abraham Shusterman Children's Center Memorial Fund: To support our Religious School and Preschool.

Sisterhood Religious School Scholarship Fund: To provide Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Memorial Fund: Donations made in honor of a loved one who has passed.

Joseph S. Weinfeld Faculty Development Fund: Donations support both curriculum and teaching skill enrichment activities for Sunday and Hebrew School teachers.

William Freschel Kiddush Fund: All donations help provide Kiddush Lunch each Saturday following worship services.

A $150 donation is considered to be a sponsorship to honor a special someone or occasion.

Youth Activities Fund: Donations provide financial support for children of our congregation to attend Camp Coleman, to take part in regional/national youth conventions, and to experience a summer in Israel.
