As we prepare to celebrate Hanukkah, our festival of light and miracles, I’m thrilled to share that we will be welcoming our daughter, Mila Joy Azu into the covenant. The Simchat Bat (celebration of the daughter) will take place during Shabbat services on Friday, December 16 at 7:30 pm. During the naming, blessings will be bestowed upon Mila, and we will announce her Hebrew name to the community. As members of our One Family, nothing would give us more joy than to have you join us in this joyous celebration!

CLERGY MESSAGE
Director of Lifelong Learning Rabbi Ariel Boxman
Chanukah is approaching and we are so excited to celebrate as a community. Below are some fun, family activities that can be done at home. Enjoy!
1. Make a pasta menorah for Channukah
Make a menorah for Channukah out of dry pasta! It is both usable and beautiful, and most of all, fun to make. Simply glue some rigatoni pasta on to a flat lasagna noodle and then spray paint with silver acrylic paint. Add your candles and enjoy! Check out this link for more detailed instructions: tinyurl.com/pastamenorah
2. Host a latke tasting Latkes (potato pancakes) are traditionally made with shredded potatoes. However, they can also be made with all sorts of alternatives. Try a few different recipes and see which ones your children like best! My favorites include sweet potato and zucchini. However, I am excited to try out onion and cauliflower this year! Check out this link for some fun ideas to try! tinyurl.com/latkerecipes2022
3. Make Channukah slime!
Slime is all the rage right now for our littles! It is a great opportunity to do a science experiment and learn about Channukah at the same time! Make sure to store in an air tight container so that it can be used over and over again! Check out the recipe and instructions here: tinyurl.com/hannukahslime
4. Do an act of loving kindness
While it is especially fun to receive gifts on Channukah, it is also a wonderful time to teach children about the importance of giving back to others. Instead of giving gifts to your children on all eight nights, dedicate one night as a special night to give to others. On this night do a community service project as a family. Fun family community service projects include assembling peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for a local shelter, cleaning out closets and donating used clothing and toys to Goodwill, and making homemade dog toys and giving to a local animal shelter.
We hope you enjoy these Channukah activities for you and your family. Wishing you a sweet and happy holiday!

LEADERSHIP MESSAGE
Executive Director
Deborah Fidel
In Ecclesiastes, King Solomon wrote that there is nothing new under the sun. Well, he obviously never visited Temple Shalom!
We have so many new programs and events planned for the year in addition to our traditional worship and adult education offerings, that it is a huge challenge to fit it all into our emails and The Voice! When you join Temple Shalom, you may be drawn in by the wonderful sermons, outstanding music and yummy onegs on Friday nights, but you quickly learn that there is so much more for you here when you join “One Family.”
Do you enjoy the outdoors? Check out Kadima, our new outdoor adventure group. They meet monthly to hike, bike, kayak, paddleboard and more. Would you like to meet other members of Temple in a relaxed, social setting? Shalom@Home is a neighborhood based get together in private homes. The Empty Nesters and New Members groups dine out and get to know each other while breaking bread. If mah jongg is your thing, we have a weekly game. Like to cook? Watch a Foodie Film with and learn how to cook Jewish foods!
Do you have young children? Want to meet other young families? We meet at local parks and playgrounds for Shabbat Sha-play every month. Shalom Café is a regular happening for parents at Temple Shalom on Sunday mornings. Enjoy a nosh and a hear different speakers talk about raising Jewish children while the kids are in YESh (Religious School). There is even babysitting available for your littlest ones.
Sisterhood will be holding a Canasta Tournament and a Fashion Show this year, in addition to their fabulously successful Mah Jongg tourney. We are forming TEN new havurahs (small groups who meet monthly to socialize and celebrate holidays together) this month, doubling our total number of groups!
I could go on and on. Whether you are looking for a robust Social Action Committee, active Men’s Club or stimulating Adult Education, there is something for you at Temple.
Temple Shalom is a special place. The staff and I work overtime to keep it that way by constantly brainstorming and bouncing ideas off one another and finding new and creative ways to fulfill our mission to “foster[ing] connections- one to another, Temple, Israel, Torah and God.” We hope you agree.

Susan and Nat Ritter – Honorees for Diamond Anniversary Celebration
By Carole J Greene
Rarely do we see a couple like the Ritters, who are always so happy to be together. To say they are a perfect match would be an understatement.
Nat and Susan Ritter exchanged vows under the chupah at Temple Shalom in December 2011, with Rabbi Adam Miller conducting the service and Rabbi James Perman offering a blessing. Since that time, they have never argued. Never. Still honeymooning? You betcha!
Nat was born and reared in Dayton, Ohio, where his parents, who were both Holocaust survivors, moved in 1951. His father was Orthodox, his mother, Reform, so of course he was raised Conservative. He graduated from Miami University in Ohio and went to Case Western Reserve School of Dentistry. After a residency in general dentistry at Mount Sinai Hospital in Cleveland, he undertook specialty training in orthodontics at the University of Kentucky. He returned to Dayton and set up his practice, married Wendy Zuckerwise and was widowed just 8 short years later.
Susan was born and reared in Buffalo, New York. After graduation from the University of Maryland, she moved to Annapolis and was employed as a CPA with a public accounting firm in Washington, D.C. She and her husband, Rob Millstone moved around quite a bit over the years, until they arrived in Naples in 2004. Shortly after the move to Florida, Rob was diagnosed with cancer, which took him quickly.
“When Rob died,” Susan said, “the doctor asked if he could call anyone for me. Rabbi Perman came to mind. The doctor phoned him—it was 4:00 or 5:00 a.m.—and he came. From then on, he was very helpful and caring.” She spoke of many ways Temple Shalom helped her during her husband’s illness and after she became a widow.
For a while, Susan paddled her own canoe, but after Nat Ritter bought a condo here in 2010, their unofficial matchmakers, Lee Kaye and Bobbie Myers, introduced them to each other. Nat was still operating his orthodontics practice in Dayton, and only coming down for long weekends, but they started dating.
“On New Year’s Eve 2010/2011,” Susan said, “I don’t know what moved me, but I phoned Nat to wish him a happy new year.” That’s when their relationship “started getting serious,” said Nat. He sold his

practice in 2011 and moved here full-time. Their romance blossomed. And it is still blooming! Temple Shalom has offered them a family—neither had children—and became central to their lives. Nat said, “Temple Shalom is a big part of our life. It is important to have a Jewish home, and we feel very much at home there. I’ve always had a strong feeling for my Judaism. The Temple expands my Jewish identity.”
Susan has been active at Temple Shalom in many ways. Serving on several committees, she especially enjoyed planning Rabbi Miller’s Installation. Currently, she is the elected Treasurer of the Temple—for the second time. She belongs to Sisterhood, and Nat, to Men’s Club. A few years back, the pair chaired the Above & Beyond Campaign. Their own financial contributions have been consistently above and beyond, demonstrating where their hearts are.
When Executive Director Deborah Fidel asked Susan to stop by her office after a meeting for a little chat last summer, Susan was nervous. Laughing, Susan recalled, “I felt like a student being told to report to the principal. But Deborah was quick to point out that I wasn’t in trouble – to the contrary!” Nat and I were both very surprised to be invited to be part of the Temple’s annual fundraiser in this way. It never occurred to us that we’d be chosen for this honor.” Their humility is just another one of the qualities that makes this couple so special.
On March 25, 2023, Nat and Susan Ritter will join Dan and Judi Spintman as honorees of the dinner and mystery theater evening titled “Diamonds Are Forever.” Can’t think of a better way to celebrate Temple Shalom’s 60th—diamond—anniversary. Save the date on your calendar, and watch for information to make your reservation for this gala fundraiser.

In the spirit of our tradition, which calls us to perform the mitzvah of Nihum Avelim (comforting mourners), a Bereavement Support Group was developed for widows who are grieving for a loved one. The group, which observes confidentiality of communication, meets on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month at Temple Shalom.
The facilitators, Arline Kaplan, Ph.D., and Leslie Wasserman, M.A., are members of Temple Shalom. Both Arline and Leslie, licensed in New York and Michigan respectively, have extensive experience with groups and with people experiencing grief and loss.

ISRAEL CORNER
By Andy Karpman
Artist Village of Ein Hod
The Artists Village of Ein Hod sits on a hill overlooking the beaches of Atlit and a Crusaders’ fortress, off the old Tel Aviv-Haifa Highway. It was established in 1953, based on a concept devised by a group of artists led by Marcel Janco – building the first Israeli artists’ village to provide its residents with a supportive and creative framework. Though the first decades were hard, the founders persisted thanks to their ideals and vision, which promoted the only artists village in Israel.
The communal aspects of life are managed by a General Assembly and an Executive Committee, elected every 2 years. Current population is several hundred families, and it has two kindergartens, a youth center, and extensive communal activities.
The village belongs to the Hof Carmel Regional Council that stretches along the Mediterranean coast and Mt. Carmel’s western slopes, from south of Tirat Carmel to north of Caesarea. This strip of land is popular with bike and horse riders, hikers, and vacationers. It is surrounded by the blue sea, golden sands, evergreen forests, olive groves, vineyards, banana plantations, and lush orchards.
Council settlements offer a variety of rental huts, guesthouses, resorts, picnic sites, romantic beaches, fine restaurants, wineries, organic farms, and more. Visitors can choose numerous hiking tracks that run through breathtaking vistas and unique nature reserves, including the internationally-important Nahal HaMearot (River of Caves) Nature Reserve where cavemen bones were discovered.

Volunteer Highlight
PHIL FREEMAN – A VOLUNTEER FOR ALL SEASONS
By Carole J. Greene
Please go on a time-travel adventure with me—back to the time prior to the 2020 COVID-19 shutdown. A person receiving attention from Phil Freeman in his volunteer activities at that time would have been a patient at one of the NCH hospitals in Naples. Up to that time, he had been visiting Temple Shalom members in the hospital, offering a cheery voice, a happy smile, and perhaps a familiar face to perk them up. This has always been a big help for our clergy, as he could keep them apprised about patients who would appreciate a clergy visit, or those going home soon so a visitor might encounter an empty room.
Such a job is not open to just anyone. Phil—and anyone else who does this service—must be credentialed. He took a class the hospital offers, to demonstrate the proper way to handle such visitation. What to say and do, what not to say and do. After he passed muster with the hospital, he posed for a photo to be included on a badge designating him as official lay clergy. But his learning did not stop there. He then sat down with Rabbi Miller to absorb details pertinent to the needs of hospitalized Temple members.
“My first stop each time I visited was the NCH chaplain’s office” said Phil. “With Pastor Jennie Thomas at the helm, the spiritual care office is in great hands. She would have a list prepared for me with names and room numbers of all patients who had indicated they were Jewish. Then I’d check to see if they were Temple Shalom members. Sometimes, I’d go ahead and visit them even if they weren’t members. I was always received with appreciation.”
Because of HIPPA privacy laws, he could not take home with him that day’s patient list. He had to dispose of it in a special place inside NCH.
Protocol changed when COVID hit. Then, only patients and essential medical personnel were allowed in the hospitals. Pastor Thomas continued to supply Phil with lists of Jewish patients, but now his visitation turned to the telephone.
Today, Phil says, “I make about twenty calls a week. This averages to about a thousand calls a year. And I’ve been visiting or calling for ten years now. With few exceptions, such calls have been well received.”
Phil notes that he applauds Temple Shalom clergy for their efforts to follow up on visits and phone calls. “I’m just glad I can provide this service to help them out.”
No doubt, once NCH permits his return in person, Phil will again be our clergy’s faithful helper for hospital visitation. Much as he loves this volunteer activity, Phil won’t be able to do it forever. If this sounds like something you might like to do, let Executive Director Deborah Fidel know so she can have a backup ready for that eventual day when Phil feels the need to step down.

Like many others, our gathering with family and/or friends at Thanksgiving often contains some small attempt to actually give thanks. “Let’s go around the table and say what we’re each thankful for.” It doesn’t always work out like in the movies, but we try. We all could find something to be grateful for: friendship, love, health, the joy and beauty of a Naples sunset, a Temple community, the freedom to express ourselves, uplifting music, the success of our favorite sports team, food on the table. The list goes on and on. We all can find something for which we are grateful.
And at this time of year of thanks and gift-giving and family togetherness and tradition, I hope we each also take some time to feel the discomfort of others, their loneliness, their health issues or private struggles, their hunger, their lack of control in their lives. Perhaps expressions of gratitude are not as forthcoming if you are a member of an oppressed minority, or disadvantaged, or hungry or homeless. It is difficult to be grateful when you are dispossessed and during times of adversity.
There is a balance between gratitude for what we have and discomfort for what we see lacking around us. This time of year, let’s use that as a motivation to make the world a better place – to do the work of tikkun olam (repairing the world). Perhaps lend a hand to someone who could use it. Even a kind word, a letter of gratitude, a phone call or a visit – can all be a comfort. Wondering what to gift your friends and family for Hanukkah? How about making a donation in their honor to your favorite charity. Support the Temple. Support the local community through the Rainbow of Hope project. Support a national or international charitable organization. Support the people you interact with every day with an attitude of kindness and respect. Volunteer your time. There are so many ways to give thanks, and likewise, so many opportunities to help others in their time of need.

MEN’S CLUB
Men’s Club President Ron Yasbin
Happy Hanukkah! Today we mostly think of Hanukkah as a holiday for children, I have always looked at it as our celebration of our independence victory and as the struggle that saved the future generations. So, it really should be a holiday to think about our children, their education, their well being and the thriving of Judaism.
The Men’s Club is proud of the support that we have been providing to those aims. This year we have already pledged $10,000 to a challenge fund that has upgraded and will continue to upgrade the curriculum in YESh as well as provided support for the Sukkot celebration and the purchase of a new digital projector that will service both the Temple and the Schools. In addition, we have committed funds to help defray the costs of the students traveling with Rabbi Miller to Washington, DC for the RAC trip.

With respect to the wider community, we have just established six scholarships for BBYO students to attend national events, as well as donated to food banks, and those organizations supporting disaster relief and care for the homeless in Collier County. We can only continue to provide this type of support through our membership dues and the success of our fundraisers. That is why it is so important that the men of Temple Shalom join the Men’s Club and that everyone who can, and is interested, participate in our fundraisers. Take a look at our line-up of upcoming events and add them to your calendar. Remember we not only want members, we also want ideas and leaders. I can be reached by email at ryasbin@alumni.psu.edu

For many generations, Jews have made it a custom to remember their loved ones and sanctify their joyous events with a charitable donation. At Temple Shalom, there are several ways for us to remember or honor a loved one and give thanks for milestone events in our lives. Please consider a yahrzeit plaque, Tribute Garden paver, leaf on the Tree of Life, or dedicating a Torah portion in the Illustrated Torah as a permanent remembrance. Your generosity will contribute to the future of Temple Shalom.
Scan the QR codes below with the camera on your cellphone to go directly to an order form, or call the Temple Shalom office for assistance.

Showing We Care
Contributions to Temple Shalom funds are wonderful ways to show your appreciation of family and friends, to celebrate happy occasions and to honor the memories of loved ones. We suggest a minimum donation of chai ($18.00). With a minimum donation of chai, a notice of your gift will be sent to the honoree and mention will be published in The Voice. To make a donation, visit the donation page on the website at www.naplestemple.org, or call the Temple office at 239-455-3030.
