Debbi e Z v i b l e ma n , P r esident December is a busy month for all of us. With Chanukah landing on Christmas, it is an opportunity for many families to go away to be with loved ones to celebrate family traditions. It is also a time when we need to think of those less fortunate in our community who depend on the food bank for food and donations of clothes and toys so that their children will have Christmas.

Normally on Christmas Day my family picks a movie to see and then we go out for Chinese food, like many other Jewish families.

With Chanukah falling on Christmas we will make latkes, light our many family menorahs and share a meal with friends. One of our sons will not be with us this year. My youngest son will be in Israel for Chanukah with many other American young adults with Birthright. While I know he will yearn for his fathers’ latkes, he will have a very special time in Israel that I know will be an experience of a lifetime. As we read the story of Chanukah, he will actually be where our ancestors fought for Religious freedom.

Whether you are out of town or attending the many Jewish community celebrations, have a Happy Chanukah.

Last month our sanctuary overflowed in joyful celebration of our facility’s 25th anniversary. Thank you to Helen Weinfeld, our amazing Temple historian. Not only did we celebrate her 95th birthday that evening, Helen was the spark that got the idea for the Silver Anniversary Service started. Her dream was made possible by the countless individuals who put in their time and effort as part of Lori Cohen and her team. Thank you to Lori, Beth Feldman, Susan Freeman, Jane Perman, Daryl Sissman, Sheldon Starman, as well as many other volunteers.

At the conclusion of that service, I was approached by several members to express their surprise and curiosity to learn about some of the symbols we take for granted within the sanctuary. Most were not aware that the beams in the ceiling were intended to emulate the tent poles from the Mishkan. Nor did many realize that the small colorful shapes which give the Jerusalem stone over our ark the appearance of the Western Wall with paper stuffed into its crevices, were really seashells intended to connect Florida and Israel.

I shared during my talk that the stained glass windows over the bimah contain some of the most powerful symbols in our sanctuary. Each has the iconic image of the seven branched menorah, a ritual item that existed in the ancient Temple of Jerusalem. The original golden menorah was destroyed when the Romans demolished the Temple in 70 CE, and carried off to Rome as a spoil of war. A bas-relief appears

in the famous Arch of Titus in Rome, commemorating that conquest.

On our stain glass windows, the menorah appears to have several nicks, but remains unbroken. The artist created the design to send the message that whatever pain the Jewish people experiences, they remain unbroken. A bright light shining out to the nations.

That inspiring message feels even more meaningful today. With the rapid rise of anti-Semitic and racist acts in our own country, we must remain strong, unbroken, and shine the light of justice on those who embrace hate or violence. Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel teaches that “Indifference to evil is worse than evil itself.” We know too well from our own history that staying silent in the face of intolerance, hatred and bigotry only allows those forces to grow stronger.

When we gather to light our own nine-branch menorahs (chanukiyah) in celebration of Chanukah, let us do so with the strength and courage of the Maccabees in our hearts. With each candle we add light against the darkness of the night, and so too may we add light against the encroaching darkness in our world. Place your chanukiyah in the window, and do an act to make our world brighter. Reach out to a friend and invite that person to share in your celebration. Give to tzedakah to help those who are in need. Join with the larger community for our communal celebration of the holiday on December 26th at Mercato.

May this holiday bring each one of us light and hope, just as those windows inspire us each time we enter our sanctuary.

Soulful Shabbat Sing. Pray. Celebrate!

I’m thrilled to share with you that Rabbi Miller and I will be presenting a brand new prayer service to Temple Shalom! Soulful Shabbat will be a completely sung musical service accompanied by a professional four piece band. This creative worship service will be a departure from our traditional service, giving us a new way to engage and connect spiritually. You’ll still hear many of the melodies you’re familiar with but I will also be introducing some new, uplifting musical selections that will enhance and energize our service.

Torah Talk

Nearly three years ago our superb Cantor Donna Azu invited four of her talented young colleagues to present an evening of music. The audience was treated to a memorable concert that included cantorial pieces, Israeli folk songs, Broadway show tunes, and operatic arias.

Over the next few weeks, watch our weekly announcements for links to some of the new music you’ll be hearing. Our first Soulful Shabbat service is scheduled for Friday, December 16 at 7:30pm and again on Friday, February 10 and March 31 at 7:30.

On Sunday, March 5 at 7:30 pm, Cantor Azu and her friends will present an encore performance with an exciting new musical program and two new voices. Cantors Carrie Barry from Coral Springs, Florida and Daniel Mutlu of Houston, Texas will return, while William Tiep of Cardiff, California and Mary Rebecca Thomas of Charlotte, North Carolina will be making their Naples debut. All five are ordained cantors with superb voices and wide experience in many musical genres. With “Encore” the five cantors will once again provide an unforgettable listening experience.

The concert will be Temple Shalom’s major fundraiser for 2017.

Latkes or Sufganiyot?

Are you team latke or team sufganiyot (donuts)? Before January weight loss resolutions, I thought it would be fun to share two recipes to help you decide. Enjoy – and let me know which you like!

Latkes are potato pancakes eaten with applesauce, sour cream, jelly, or maybe even ketchup – depending on your family tradition. There are many variations – shredded potato or pureed, regular potatoes, sweet potatoes, or even zucchini, sweet and savory. To really shake things up, try a dessert latke made with apples.

Apple Latkes

4 large apples, peeled/cored/shredded (I use 2 Granny Smith and 2 Braeburn apples) Juice of 1 lemon 1 T ground cinnamon 3 T granulated sugar ¼ cup all-purpose flour 2 eggs Oil for frying, preferably vegetable or peanut OPTIONAL: Cinnamon Sugar & Powdered Sugar for dusting Directions: Heat oil over medium heat – you need approximately 2-3 inches of oil in your pan Wrap shredded apples in cheesecloth and squeeze to remove excess moisture (if you save the juice, you can mix it with powdered sugar for a glaze!)

Place shredded apples in a bowl and mix with lemon juice, cinnamon, sugar, and flour Beat the eggs and add to the apples, mixing just until incorporated Gently shape a small handful of apple mixture (you can make as big or small, thick or thin as you’d like!)

Place in the oil and fry until golden brown; flip and fry until golden brown Remove to a wire rack to drain When slightly cool, dust with cinnamon sugar and powdered sugar or add a glaze Serve with jelly, ice cream, and/or whipped cream

SPECIAL SNEAK PREVIEW:

Sufganiyot

The jelly donut is one of the most underrated sweet treats but sufganiyot for Chanukah gives us a chance to appreciate this special treat! Donuts take time to make and can sometimes be tricky. But never fear – whether you’re busy, can’t work with yeast dough, or are overwhelmed at the thought of making it from scratch, here’s an amazing “cheat” recipe for jelly donuts in less than 20 minutes!

Directions: 1 pack of Pillsbury Buttermilk Biscuits in cans (4 cans come in a package – you can buy other brands or flavors, but these work the BEST!) Oil for frying Jelly (strawberry or other favorite flavors) Cinnamon sugar Powdered sugar Granulated sugar Put cinnamon sugar, powdered sugar, and granulated sugar on separate shallow plates or bowls Open cans and separate biscuits – you can use all 40 at once or do just 10 at a time Heat oil over medium heat – you need approximately 3 inches of oil in your pan (enough to cover biscuits halfway) Carefully place biscuits in the oil, leaving plenty of room (depending on your pan, usually 4-5 at a time) Fry until golden brown and flip; continue frying until golden brown Remove to a wire rack to drain and cool slightly Fill with jelly (you can use a syringe; you can cut a small hole and squeeze jelly in; you can slice and add jelly – or if you really want, you can leave the jelly out completely) Toss your donut in your favorite sugar topping to coat Enjoy!

(These are super easy and super quick. If you want a full sufganiyot recipe to make your own from scratch, I’m happy to share that too!)

Winding down our autumn celebrations, we are reminded how thankful we are here at TSP. In our classrooms, we teach the children to be thankful for the food they eat, the friends they have, and the love they receive from their families, friends and teachers.

The staff at TSP is thankful for the supportive families, the opportunities to teach such wonderful children, and for the incredible school we get to come to every day.

Children love the holidays and our Temple Shalom Preschool students recently celebrated Thanksgiving with a delicious feast and sing-along with family. And now, with the arrival of December, we celebrate the joyous holiday of Chanukah, commemorating the miracle of our heritage.

All of our Preschool families are invited to our Annual Chanukah Festival. Parents join their little ones at the festival featuring latkes, sufganiyot, dreidel coloring, candle making, crafts and Chanukah gelt. This is a very special event filled with laughter, songs and happiness.

Once again, TSP will be opening its doors for our Winter Camp when the regular preschool is closed for vacation. Children ages 2-6 can come for the day or week to play with their friends, sing, cook, and enjoy science and arts and crafts. Registration is now open for Winter Camp which will be held December 19-30.

Registration is also open for our Little Cubs class with Miss Jane, which begins January 10th. This nurturing class is open to our youngest TSP children who turn 2 years old after September 1st. The class is offered Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. – 12:30 a.m. A limited number of spots are still available, call now to register.

Tikkun Olam Council - Social Action & Social Justice at Temple Shalom Exciting volunteer opportunities We need you!

The TOC’s first meeting of 5777 was a perfect time to remind ourselves of our purpose, namely “…to assist in, enhance and advance opportunities for members of all ages of Temple Shalom to participate in and fulfill their obligations of Tikkun Olam and of promoting Social Action and Social Justice.”

We reviewed the many volunteer opportunities our members already support, highlighted areas that could use our support and considered new ideas for social action, including:

• Visions Luncheon, Monday December 5th at Temple Shalom, an annual event for visually impaired community members. Volunteers are needed on that day from 10:45 to 1:30 to help set up and assist at the luncheon. For more info contact Bobbie Katz at gbkatz5804@aol. com.

• Harry Chapin Food Bank. A wonderful organization that helps feed the hungry right here in Collier County. Volunteers are needed at the Naples Warehouse or the Mobile Food Pantry, for more info contact Stan Farb at stan4mignon@earthlink.net.

• JFCS. Many of our members already actively volunteer at this great organization. Volunteers are currently needed to help in the parking lot during the weekly senior center luncheons and on Fridays from 10:00 AM to 2:30 PM to assist the dementia respite support group.

• We continue to look for ways in which we might support the Immokalee tomato farm workers in their efforts to win over the two major corporations, Wendy’s and Publix, that have not yet supported the Fair Food Program. For more info contact Ken Goldstein at kengoldstein@mac.com.

• Some new ideas were brought up, including finding ways to help local organizations on Christmas Day and helping kids in Collier County to get books.

Zion & America: The American Jewish Experience The United States has been the golden medina, a place where the Jewish people found acceptance and prosperity. What made America special and different? Will this continue and are there problems on the horizon?

Our People Are Your People: American Jewry and the Struggle for Civil Rights No other ethnic or religious group outside of the African-American community gave more support to the civil rights movement than American Jews. Why did they do it and what were their accomplishments?

Middle East in Crisis Israel, it has been said, is a good country in a bad neighborhood and the area has gotten worse. Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah and ISIS are constant threats. A new American President offers opportunities and problems. The Middle East, as always, is in for exciting times.

Mel & Jenny grew up in New York (in Queens and Brooklyn respectively ). They met while attending City College in NY and married shortly before Mel started his medical education at NYU. For the last 33 years they have lived in Southold, NY on eastern Long Island where they raised their two children and Mel practiced Internal Medicine. They retired at the end of 2015, sold their Southold home, and moved to Naples permanently in January of 2016, where they have vacationed over the previous 20 years. Since their move to Naples, Mel has enjoyed taking flying lessons, fishing and attending various lectures. Jenny has resumed her interest in watercolor painting. Mel and Jenny both enjoy the theater and travel. They plan to spend the summer months exploring new places.

Silver Anniversary Shabbat At the Friday evening Shabbat service on November 18th, over 350 people gathered together to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the first Shabbat service in our sanctuary. Old friends, new friends and familiar faces shared a wonderful evening of reminiscing and celebrating the history of Temple Shalom and all those who came before us that helped to ensure that there would be a strong, vibrant Jewish presence in Naples.

Many thanks are due to those who worked so hard to make the

evening a success including the 25th Anniversary committee: Lori Cohen (Chair), Helen Weinfeld (Historian), Beth Feldman, Susan Freeman, Jane Perman, Daryl Sissman and Sheldon Starman.

Thanks go also to The Mens’ Club, The Sisterhood, the staff of Temple Shalom and Nancy and Jack Wiadro for arranging for our special guest, Cantor Jeff Klepper.

Connor was one of two students from Barron Collier chosen to participate (based on intensive auditions) in the Florida Music Educators All State Concert Band. The band will perfrom at the Tampa Convention Center in January. But, that’s not all! Connor was also selected as percussion first chiar for All County Honor Band. Way to go, Connor. Your Temple family is very proud of you!

by Suzanne Low, J.D., CFP®, Endowment Chair Some Myths of Planned Giving If you believe that planned giving is only for older people or those with great wealth, that’s not true. Planned giving is one of the easiest ways for you to support Temple Shalom in the future without sacrificing income today.

Here are five common myths and the realities refuting them: Myth #1 – Planned gifts are too complicated and confusing.

Reality #1 - There are many types of planned gifts – most are simple and affordable, such as a gift in your will or revocable (living) trust.

You just need to find the one that best fulfills your goals.

Myth #2 – My estate needs to be large to make an impact.

Reality #2 – Including Temple Shalom in your estate plan for any amount can make a lasting impact and a tremendous difference. One option is to designate a percentage of your estate.

Myth #3 – I’m too young to think about making a will.

Reality #3 – Planning your estate is an important step at any stage of your life. A meeting with an estate planning attorney can help you ensure that your intentions are carried out, and it can help establish a plan to receive the best tax benefits for your assets.

Myth #4 – The main benefit of charitable giving is to reduce your tax burden.

With a completed endowment gift of $10,000 or more you will become a member of our Eternal Light Society.

Contributions to Temple Shalom funds are wonderful ways to show your appreciation of family and friends, to celebrate happy occasions and to honor the memories of loved ones. We suggest a minimum donation of chai ($18.00). With a minimum donation of chai, a notice of your gift will be sent to the honoree and mention will be published monthly in The Voice.

Operations

General Fund: Donations used for operating expenses.

Tree of Life: Each ‘Rock’ and ‘Star of David’ is a donation of $540.00; each ‘Leaf ’ is $240.00. The contribution must be received in its entirety before engraving is ordered.

Prayerbook Fund: Purchase of prayerbooks and Torah commentaries. To dedicate: Prayerbooks - $50 Torah commentary - $100 High Holy Day prayerbooks - $108 - each set

Endowment

Religious School

Religious School Fund: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for Jewish learning in both Sunday and Hebrew Schools.

Scholar In Residence Endowment Fund: Supports the endowment established by Shirley and Henry Kraus. This fund enables Temple Shalom to bring visiting scholars to the Temple as an educational benefit to the membership.

Religious School Enrichment Fund: Donations augment the Religious School budget to enrich the education of our children.

The Low Family Endowment Fund: To secure the future of Temple Shalom and Reform Judaism in Southwest Florida.

Polster Religious School Scholarship Fund: To supplement Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

The Herbert & Ruth Abramson Fund: To supplement the general operating fund and to provide enrichment for Temple functions.

Ben Calmenson Fund: Donations will be used to create sponsorships to send children to attend Camp Coleman.

The Janet & Howard Solot Endowment Fund: For general charitable uses and purposes.

Rabbi Abraham Shusterman Children's Center Memorial Fund: To support our Religious School and Preschool.

Clergy/Leadership

Memorial Fund: Donations made in honor of a loved one who has passed.

Joseph S. Weinfeld Faculty Development Fund: Donations support both curriculum and teaching skill enrichment activities for Sunday and Hebrew School teachers.

Cantor Azu's Discretionary Fund: For tzedakah, charitable purposes and general enhancement of the Cantor's work.

William Freschel Kiddush Fund: All donations help provide Kiddush Lunch each Saturday following worship services.

A $150 donation is considered to be a sponsorship to honor a special someone or occasion.

Youth Activities Fund: Donations provide financial support for children of our congregation to attend Camp Coleman, to take part in regional/national youth conventions, and to experience a summer in Israel.

Capital Reserve: Maintain and enhance buildings and grounds.

Worship

Flower Fund: Provides Bimah flowers each Shabbat. A $100.00 donation is considered to be a sponsorship in memory or in honor of a special someone or occasion.

Mitzvah Baskets Fund: A $100.00 donation will purchase several hundred dollars of food for JFCS. Dr. Philip & Shirley Gilbert Music Fund: Donations are used for the enhancement of music at Temple Shalom.

Preschool

Preschool Fund: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for the Preschool.

Preschool Enrichment Fund: The enhancement of curriculum, educational programs and experiences.

Arby Lipman Children's Library: For the purchase of children and adolescent books and magazine subscriptions, and supplies.

Jack and Charlotte Ward Family Children's Music Shelf: Audio and video music for children.

Endowment Fund: Donations help to secure the future, enrich the programs and provide for emergency needs of the congregation.

Rabbi Miller’s Discretionary Fund: For tzedakah, charitable purposes,and general enhancement of the Rabbi's work.
