Tomato Justice

hat does a tomato mean to you? Is it a fruit or a vegetable (Congress once debated this question)? A tasty treat – or a food to avoid? How about a symbol of justice?

While we enjoy plentiful plates full of fresh fruits and vegetables, many of us do not think about the industry and workers who make that bounty possible. In recent years, national news stories have depicted the harsh working conditions experienced by migrant workers in the tomato fields – including subpoverty wages, systemic wage theft, rampant sexual harassment and, in extreme cases, modern-day slavery. Many Jews, including here at Temple Shalom, began Rabbi Adam Miller adding a tomato to their seder plate to raise awareness for what was transpiring.

Fortunately, the injustice experienced by the tomato workers has been transformed into justice in our fields. After more than two decades of work by the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW), an historic partnership has evolved between the farmworkers and tomato growers, as well as many restaurants and retailers. The result has been improvement of the working conditions in the fields, in addition to a penny-per-pound wage increase for workers.

Media outlets now herald the tomato industry as a positive example for justice in the workplace.

When we speak of the pursuit of justice, we often think first of major societal issues taking place far from Naples. Yet, the story of tomato field justice is one that occurs quite literally in our own backyard. In recent years, the Jewish group T’ruah organized groups of rabbis to visit the CIW and witness the stories of the farmworkers. I will be joining the next cohort, December 1st – 3rd, to hear firsthand from the workers in our broader community about their experiences.

In addition, we have arranged to bring the “#tomatorabbi” stories back to Temple Shalom. At 7pm, on the evening of December 3rd, Rabbi Michael Torop (Beth El in St. Petersberg), Rabbi Rachel Kahn-Troster (T’ruah), and representatives from the CIW will be at Temple Shalom to tell their stories, enabling us to better understand what is happening in our Family Shabbat backyard.

am overjoyed to share with you The Sound of Shalom - the music of our Shabbat evening Cantor service at Temple Shalom. Using a variety of genres, old and new, I created this CD in an Donna Azu attempt to harness the power of Jewish music, the beauty of Shabbat, and the depth of the Shabbat liturgy. While our weeks can be can be filled with the hectic goings on of everyday life, Shabbat gives us an opportunity to rest, be refreshed and reflect on the quiet and calm as we celebrate life with our families, friends, and community. It is my hope that The Sound of Shalom fills you with joy and peace.

Why Do We Contribute?

ost of us contribute to the Temple for various reasons but the one common link, I believe, is the passion we have for a particular project, event or fund that supports part of the Temple’s operation.

Neil Shnider Typically, contributions are made “in President honor of ” or “in memory of ” or just to say “Thank You” for appreciation of acts of kindness. In the Voice every month there is a list of over thirty (30) ways to show you CARE. Each of us has a different reason and each of us has a different passion. For the next few months I would like to explain how some of these funds and areas of contributions are used.

MITZVAH BASKETS: If you have been to services you have seen the baskets in front of the podiums on the bimah. These baskets are representative of the donations that are being made to the fund. No one takes the baskets nor are the baskets given to anyone. What happens is that for every $100.00 con-

tributed to the fund, $18.00 goes to the food bank to buy food for JFCS. This is a win-win for the Temple and the community. This $18.00 given to the JFCS buys approximately five times that amount in food for the needy. It is a great social action program for the Temple and one that most folks are not aware of. Thanks to Paul Rosofsky, this fund was set up and implemented many years ago and today Paul still continues to ensure that the money is delivered and the needy are fed. As one can see, we help the community as we help Temple Shalom.

WILLIAM FRESCHEL KIDDUSH FUND: This fund enables the Temple to provide members of the congregation a kiddush luncheon after Saturday morning service.All are welcome to gather and connect. To share stories and kibitz. It is a time of engagement and reflection of the weeks past. Without this fund and the monies that are contributed to it, an opportunity of making the Temple the “3rd” place would be lost.

URJ Biennial 2015 - Shabbat Services with 5,000 Reform Jews

W

hat an experience and what an education! On November 4-8th Temple Shalom had a delegation of twelve leaders attend the 73rd Union for Reform Judaism Biennial in Orlando, FL. The experience, education and connectivity is indescribable. The Rabbi, Cantor, Director of Congregation Education, Congregational Engagement Concierge and members of the Board of Trustees all gathered to, not only experience the excitement, but to bring back a new energy and knowledge to the Temple. We all attended workshops in different areas of interest and shared our information and discussed how we can bring some of these ideas to implement at Temple Shalom.

The focus of the conference was “Audacious Hospitality”. This theme is all about putting the ideas of diversity, connectivity and engagement, outreach and inclusion into action. It addressed the needs of families with young children, youth, those with disabilities or special needs, interfaith families and those that represent the diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds of our vibrant Jewish community.

Workshops were offered on “Strengthening Congregations” that addressed a wide range of issues related to synagogue life, focusing on characteristics of strong congregations having a

vision and a path to get there, financial resources, a pipeline of strong leaders who collaborate, systems and processes that support movement toward the vision, the ability to manage through transitions and primary acts of congregational life like worship, learning and the pursuit of social justice.

Tikkun Olam was another track that was lead mainly by the Religious Action Center and focused on the Reform Movement’s social justice campaigns and included programmatic content that relates to our synagogue, community and the world.

Friday night and Saturday morning services were “Audacious.”

Think about sitting with 5,000 of your fellow Reform Jews connecting and engaging with Torah. I cannot imagine how to explain it. If I could it would not be the same as if you were there.

Ultimately, your clergy and leaders thank the congregation for supporting our desire to meet other professionals and lay leaders from all parts of North America so that we can share and learn from each other. We bring back new ideas and excitement to implement within the near future.

WE NEED YOU Together…We Can Repair the World

I

n response to Rabbi Miller’s Yom Kippur sermon, Temple Shalom’s Board of Trustees has formed a new Tikkun Olam Council (the TOC). The TOC is charged with coordinating our many Temple social action/social justice activities and with finding and making available new opportunities to fulfill our Jewish responsibilities to make the world whole, holy and a better place.

What the Tikkun Olam Council needs now is you, our fellow members, to join the TOC in this endeavor and to provide us with new ideas, energy and your participation so we can expand Temple Shalom’s capacity to help fulfill our obligations of tikkun olam.

Many of us have long participated in tikkun olam projects already in place. For example, Mitzvah Day every year is a time when hundreds of us come together to package 50,000 meals and to participate in other activities to help the needy in Collier County.

Throughout the year Caring Committee members provide needed and welcome services to our members and even conduct off-site religious services. Tikkun olam efforts are found in Sisterhood and Men’s Club events and projects and are embedded in our B’nai Mitzvah youth activities, in the food we bring in the blue BOGO bags and in our support for the Harry Chapin Food Bank.

Shalom to do even more. As Rabbi Miller wrote in the November issue of the Voice, this new initiative will “…review, and reinvigorate our efforts at Temple Shalom to make the world whole and holy.”

To that end, the TOC will help coordinate and expand upon what Temple Shalom is already doing. It will foster opportunities for more members to participate in the many existing projects, and, very importantly, will actively seek and initiate new opportunities for us to do tikkun olam.

To achieve that, WE NEED YOU! We would like to hear from those of you who are interested in enhancing our Temple’s social action/social justice palette. We are looking for thoughts and ideas for new projects, and especially for those who would like to become members of the TOC and to help us in our mission to help “repair our world.”

O

ne of my students recently asked me what my favorite part of the Hanukkah story is. I told her that I would be happy to share but I was curious to hear her answer. Her reply, as I expected, was the miracle of the oil. After further investigation, she was most impressed with the miracle of oil because it enabled the Jewish people to celebrate their newly regained freedom and light the menorah.

I told her that my favorite part wasn’t something that is explicitly shared in the story but rather

something that comes through quite loud and clear if you look and listen carefully.

My favorite part of the Hanukkah story is the community and teamwork aspect. The

Director of Maccabees came together against all odds to fight for what they believed in, for the Congregational Education

freedom to live (and practice) openly as Jews. After winning the war the Maccabees are left with the temple that has been desecrated and destroyed. Again, instead of giving up, they pulled together to rededicate it as a sacred and holy space. There are numerous points throughout the Hanukkah story where it would be easy to see them give up entirely. Yet at every opportunity you see them come together and work as a community and a team to accomplish what seemed like an impossible goal. To me the real miracle of the Hanukkah story is the beautiful message of community. Of coming together, accomplishing something as a collective whole that otherwise wouldn’t be possible. It is a timeless message, one that we can never hear or challenge ourselves to embrace too often, that together we are better and stronger. Whatever your favorite part of the Hanukkah story is, I wish you a happy and beautiful holiday season.

Now, with - Winter Camp @TSP the arrival of December, we celebrate the joyous holiday of Chanukah, commemorating the miracle of our heritage. The month is filled with many fun activities. In preparation of Chanukah, we held an afterschool Holiday Workshop where children hand-made gifts to give to their family members for the holidays. This workshop is fun for the children and it gives them that special joy of giving from the heart.

On December 11th we are having our annual Chanukah Festival. Parents join their little ones at the festival featuring latkes, sufganiyot, dreidel coloring, candle making, crafts and Chanukah gelt. This is a very special event filled with laughter, songs and happiness.

Beginning December 15th, TSP children will be traveling the globe during our “Chanukah around the World” Week.

They will be cruising, flying, and traveling across different countries. They will be visiting Italy on Monday, France on Tuesday, Mexico on Wednesday, and China on Thursday. On Friday, December 18th, they will complete their journey in Israel celebrating Shabbat with Rabbi Miller and Miss Jane eating challah and sampling different foods from Israel.

Once again, TSP will be opening its doors for our Winter Camp when the regular preschool is closed for vacation.

It may surprise you to know that I have never considered myself a “joiner,” and many of you know that I am sometimes uncomfortable about my Judaism. I was, therefore, a bit nervous Debra Antzis about Biennial and how I would feel being there. I am so glad I Sisterhood went anyway!

I shared Shabbat dinner and two bottles of wine with friends, and strangers who became friends. I danced the “Misirlou,” which I have known for about forty years, and helped others figure out how to do it, and, together with those same 5000 people, I sang a song about our love for Israel and our hope for peace in this world, while the creator of the song played the guitar and cried because she was so moved.

During one session, I mentioned that Sisterhood of Temple Shalom donates $15,000 ANNUALLY to our Religious School so that it can keep its tuition affordable, and knocked the socks off everyone else in the room because they were so impressed at what our Sisterhood can do. I told them there was so much more besides!!!

Senior Jewish Programming Comes to Naples & Temple Shalom!

Currently there are three options with more to come: 1. With the full co-operation of Federation and the other Collier County synagogues, there is an opportunity for Jewish single seniors to meet in social situations. This initiative is called “MIX AND MINGLE” operating under Federation’s umbrella, providing quality venues for adult socialization. Already two very successful get-togethers were over–subscribed, a sure sign that there is a community need for single seniors to socialize.

At Temple, we have two initiatives directed to seniors: 2. When time seems to drag because of the loss of a loved one, “Alone-Together” can provide activities in small groups. The purpose is to provide social activities for singles who live alone. The initial offering has been successful beyond our expectations. Any single senior who is a member of Temple Shalom and who wants to be part of a new Alone-Together group, should contact the office. There is a limit of 12 for any one group to enable bonding as a group. A member of the original Alone-Together group will help organize your new group and be your mentor.

3. Our second initiative for Temple Shalom is titled “The Senior For-Em”. We want our seniors to have a voice. We will have programs of interest on a monthly basis. Yes that means July and August!

Endowment Corner

by Suzanne Low, J.D., CFP®, Endowment Chair It’s almost the end of the tax year and time to make your charitable contributions for 2015. Today I want to share with you how some Temple members can make a tax-advantaged gift directly from your IRA to the Temple Endowment.

Again in 2015, taxpayers over age 70½ may be thinking of procrastinating in taking their required minimum distribution (RMD) if they have charitable intentions. To date, Congress has not yet reinstated the tax law provision that allows Qualified IRA Charitable Distribution (QCD).

The ability to give directly to the Temple (a qualified charity) from your IRA is a very important tax advantage for certain taxpayers. The QCD tax provision allows IRA owners who are 70½ to give directly to a charity and avoid reporting the income on their tax return. Taxpayers who take the standard deduction receive no benefit from charitable deductions, unless it comes out of their IRA. A QCD lowers modified adjusted income (MAGI), which could lower or eliminate the taxation of Social Security benefits. Lower Medicare premiums are possible for those with higher income because MAGI is the trigger point that can be helped by a QCD. The distribution must go directly from your IRA custodian to the Community Foundation of Collier County (a qualified charity) on behalf of Temple Shalom Endowment to qualify as a QCD. The Community Foundation needs to acknowledge the gift for your records. If the entire distribution goes to the Temple, then you have no income to report as a result of the IRA distribution to the charity. The limit on QCD is $100,000.

So, what do you do now? What you could do is make a distribution directly from your IRA to the Temple Endowment Fund through the Community Foundation. This way if the QCD rules are reinstated this year or retroactively to 2015, you’re all set. If they aren’t reinstated, you just claim the amount contributed as income and then report the donation as an itemized deduction. You’ll have a taxable distribution and a tax deductible contribution. This may not be as advantageous as a QCD but if you want to make a donation to the Temple Endowment anyway it doesn’t matter.

If you are interested in taking advantage of the QCD provision, whether it has been reinstated for 2015 or you anticipate it may be reinstated, consult your tax advisor as to exactly how such transaction applies to you. Then have your advisor call me to lead you both through the steps to make that important gift to the Temple Shalom Endowment before December 31, 2015.

Showing We Care

Contributions to Temple Shalom funds are wonderful ways to show your appreciation of family and friends, to celebrate happy occasions and to honor the memories of loved ones. We suggest a minimum donation of chai ($18.00). With a minimum donation of chai, a notice of your gift will be sent to the honoree and mention will be published monthly in The Voice.

Operations

General Fund: Donations used for operating expenses.

Tree of Life: Each ‘Rock’ and ‘Star of David’ is a donation of $540.00; each ‘Leaf ’ is $240.00. The contribution must be received in its entirety before engraving is ordered.

Burn The Mortgage Fund: Established by Gerry and Pearl Sugarman to reduce payment of any existing mortgage.

Worship

Memorial Fund: Donations made in honor of a loved one who has passed.

William Freschel Kiddush Fund: All donations help provide Kiddush Lunch each Saturday following worship services.

A $150 donation is considered to be a sponsorship to honor a special someone or occasion.

Flower Fund: Provides Bimah flowers each Shabbat. A $150.00 donation is considered to be a sponsorship in memory or in honor of a special someone or occasion.

Mitzvah Baskets Fund: A $100.00 donation will purchase several hundred dollars of food for JFCS.

Religious School Fund: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for Jewish learning in both Sunday and Hebrew Schools.

Religious School Enrichment Fund: Donations augment the Religious School budget to enrich the education of our children.

Polster Religious School Scholarship Fund: To supplement Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Ben Calmenson Fund: Donations will be used to create sponsorships to send children to attend Camp Coleman.

Rabbi Abraham Shusterman Children's Center Memorial Fund: To support our Religious School and Preschool.

Sisterhood Religious School Scholarship Fund: To provide Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Joseph S. Weinfeld Faculty Development Fund: Donations support both curriculum and teaching skill enrichment activities for Sunday and Hebrew School teachers.

Youth Activities Fund: Donations provide financial support for children of our congregation to attend Camp Coleman, to take part in regional/national youth conventions, and to experience a summer in Israel.

Preschool

Jack and Charlotte Ward Family Children's Music Shelf: Audio and video musical tapes for children.

Endowment

Endowment Fund: Donations help to secure the future, enrich the programs and provide for emergency needs of the congregation.

Scholar In-Residence Endowment Fund: Supports the endowment established by Shirley and Henry Kraus. This fund enables Temple Shalom to bring visiting scholars to the Temple as an educational benefit to the membership.
