RABBI’S MESSAGE

Rabbi

Adam F. Miller Redirecting Ourselves to Creating Light At the end of this month, we will gather at our homes, and around the community, to celebrate Chanukah. How would you answer the simple question, “What is Chanukah?” Depending on who I ask, that question is likely to elicit a variety of answers: • The Festival of Lights – bringing brightness at the darkest time of the year • A celebration of the Maccabees’ victory over the Syrian-Greeks • Remembering the miracles that occurred – the jar of oil that lasted for eight days, as well as the victory of the few over the many • The scholarly response that it is a delayed observance of Sukkot which was missed because the Temple was occupied Go figure, one question, multiple answers. To be honest, this is not the first time that this question has been asked. The sages of Talmud posed the same question, “What is Chanukah?” as the opening to their discussion of the holiday’s laws and rituals. Interestingly, while the rabbis provide the specific religious observances, they don’t answer the literal question being posed, “What is Chanukah?” Chanukah means rededication. The word refers to the ritual rededication and reconsecration that took place after the Assyrians desecrated the Temple in Jerusalem by performing idol worship. The rededication of the Temple unified Israel as one community. The people gathered for a major celebration – echoing the original dedication from the time of King Solomon. The rededication of Chanukah also connects to the conviction shown by the Jewish people. Told they would be forced to assimilate into Hellenistic culture, the Israelites resisted and instead rededicated themselves to their Jewish roots. At a time when things appeared dark, they became sparks of light, shining symbols of freedom for others to see. That spirit of dedication is symbolized by lighting the Chanukah menorah at a time when the world is at its darkest point. The theme of perseverance, particularly in the face of challenge, is one that resonates with all of us. Earlier this fall, members of our community gathered to discuss concerns about the growing darkness of gun violence. Agreeing that our values call us to act, a second session is being held on December 10 to educate further on existing laws regarding background checks, “red flag laws,” and assault weapons. This second event will continue the conversation, moving us one step closer to lighting the darkness. Even living in paradise, we know that additional challenges such as food insecurity, homelessness, and poverty exist darkening our community. Use this holiday of Chanukah to strike a match of hope for those who are struggling. Make one night a “ner shel tzedakah – a candle of justice” and choose to donate funds or volunteer at a local non-profit. Consider giving gift cards that night which can be used to buy supplies for Mitzvah Day – which is just around the corner in January. Together, we can push back the darkness. May our collective perseverance and dedication be a source of light to the world, as we rededicate ourselves to the values of peace, love, and justice. Rabbi Adam Miller

CANTOR’S MESSAGE

Cantor

Donna Azu Chag urim sameach! Happy holiday of light! As we approach Chanukah this year, we prepare by purchasing gifts, candles, and dusting off our dreydles and chanukiyot (chanukah menorahs). We pull out recipes for chicken and brisket, all kinds of jelly filled sufganiot and latkes! We buy fresh applesauce and sour cream for those yummy fried potatoes, and we plan our celebrations with family and friends. We are told that we add one candle each night of Chanukah to remind us of the increasing miracle of light. By the eighth night, with nine candles blazing in our homes, we are well-reminded of the greatness of the miracle. By way of reminder, we say three blessings as we kindle the Chanukah lights. The first blessing is over the mitzvah of lighting the candles:

‫ וְ צִ ָּוֽנּו לְ הַ ְדלִ יק נֵר ׁשֶ ל ֲחנֻּכָה‬,‫ אֲׁשֶ ר קִ ְּד ָ ֽׁשנּו ּבְ ִמצְ ֹותָ יו‬,‫ֱֹלהינּו ֶ ֽמלְֶך הָ עֹולָם‬ ֽ ֵ ‫ּבָ רּוְך אַ ּתָ ה יְ ָי א‬

Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu, melech ha’olam asher kidishanu b’mitz’votav v’tzivanul’had’lik neir shel Chanukah. Blessed are you, Adonai, our God, sovereign of the universe, Who has made us holy through the commandments and commanded us to light the lights of Chanukah. The second blessing helps us to recall the miracles of Chanukah in its time, including the miracle of the oil, and the important military victory of the Macabees:

Blessed are you, Adonai, our God, sovereign of the universe, Who performed miracles for our ancestors in those days at this time. The third blessing is recited only on the first night of Chanukah and reminds us to thank God for bringing us to another year of Chanukah celebrations:

Blessed are you, Adonai, our God, sovereign of the universe Who has kept us alive, sustained us, and enabled us to reach this season! I hope you’ll join us for a very special Erev Shabbat and Chanukah service on Friday night, December 27 at 7:30pm. You are welcome to bring your chanukiah and candles so that we may light them together as one community. Have a wonderful and joyous Chanukah - full of light! L’Shalom, Cantor Donna M. Azu 4

LEADERSHIP MESSAGE

Executive Director Deborah R. Fidel

The themes of Jewish pride and connection to community have been on my mind as we near the end of 2019 and look forward to Chanukah. Chanukah is a joyous holiday when we spend time with family and reconnect with loved ones. We recount the miraculous story of Judah and the Maccabees who rededicated the Second Temple in Jerusalem, after revolting against their Greek-Syrian oppressors, while we nibble on gelt and spin colorful dreidels. What better way is there to celebrate Jewish renewal and rededication than to be a part of and support Temple Shalom, a thriving, growing hub of Jewish life in our region? We truly appreciate the generosity of each donor. If you haven’t already made a gift to Above and Beyond, it’s never too late. Without YOU, there is no US! The continued runaway success of this congregation is nothing short of miraculous. We have defied the odds and grew our membership by 50% in the last three years when the majority of Reform congregations across the country are shrinking. Contrary to national trends, we actually have more students enrolled in our Religious School this year than last. As they say in Israel, “Nes Gadol Haya Po.” A great miracle happened here. Please help us celebrate our own miracle here in Naples with a gift to Temple Shalom this holiday season. Thanks a latke!

There are many opportunities to celebrate life, honor those who are special to you, or remember a loved one at Temple Shalom. One special way to commemorate a milestone is to add a leaf, rock, or star on our Tree of Life located in the Sanctuary. On the occasion of Dan & Judi Spintman’s 60th wedding anniversary, their Havurah (Howard & Sheila Agranat, Myra & Mort Friedman, Merrill Hassenfeld & Paula Brody, Jane & Rabbi James Perman, Arlene & Don Shapiro, and Janet & Howard Solot) surprised the Spintmans with a beautiful personalized leaf on our Tree of Life. Our Tree of Life is a perfect way to celebrate happy occasions in our lives. Happy Anniversary Dan & Judi! Your Temple family wishes you many more blissful years together! For information on dedication opportunities at Temple Shalom, please contact Shayna Aronson @ 239-455-3030 or saronson@naplestemple.org. 6

Keeping Our Community Safer Nothing is more critical than the safety and well-being of our community. Temple Shalom wants to engage everyone in the effort to be trained and prepared for a dangerous situation wherever they may find themselves. Today, with a rise in extremism, terrorism and violence — sometimes targeting Jewish institutions — we need to learn how to help create a safe environment for our members, friends and families. Our strategy is one of security awareness, information sharing, training, close communication with local law enforcement, and partnerships with national organizations charged with keeping Jewish communities and other institutions safe. In keeping with that approach, we invite you to join us for two informational sessions:

Active Shooter Preparedness December 4 - 1:00pm - 3:00pm at Temple Shalom Featuring Lt. Rebecca Gonzalez and Corporal Sherry Rego

Partnerships, Prevention and Preparation: Working Together to Keep Our Community Safe December 11- 10:00am to 11:00am at Temple Shalom Featuring Collier County Sheriff Kevin Rambosk

Director of Preschool Susan Feld, Ed.S. A Delicate Balance: Lap vs. Laptop Technology is a tool that helps students gain knowledge and experience, and has the ability to support learning beyond traditional experiences for very young children. Even if young children do not or cannot use technology resources in the same way that adults do, they see, hear and touch iPhones and iPads during every waking moment. Whether we acknowledge it or not, technology is shaping the way youngsters are developing and they are doing so quite differently than previous generations. Our goal at Temple Shalom Preschool is to integrate play and technology across curriculum strands by using developmentally appropriate strategies, balancing authentic experiences with digital experiences. Thanks to the Temple Shalom Mens Club, we recently received a grant to purchase Amazon Fire Kids tablets and other related technology needs. Working with Steve Saknoff, the Mens Club accepted our grant proposal and we have been able to move forward with purchases for our technology curriculum. What wonderful support they have provided! At the same time, we know that children need authentic hands-on experiences and to engage with nurturing and caring teachers. If digital screens are taking the place of interacting with caregivers or talking or playing, children may not be getting the full benefit of the preschool experience. This is why we connect the digital experience to reading, as well as playing, telling stories, and spending time outside. We encourage parents to provide stimulating home literacy activities, as well. The research informs us that nothing, not even an app on a smart phone, should squeeze out warm interactions and cozy relationships.

BBYO Associate Regional Director, North Florida Region Jess Zimmerman

Happy December from BBYO! In October, Naples BBYO gathered along with Ft. Myers BBYO for Southwest Florida Fall Fest in Miami on October 6. Thirty-two teens came together for an all-inclusive day in Miami, filled with arcade fun, rock climbing, bumper cars, a visit to the Wynwood Walls and Miami’s famous Salty Donut Shop. Teens had a wonderful time! Romy Kotler, Mishpacha BBG Committee Member, said, “I feel like Miami was one of the best opportunities Fort Myers and Naples had to bond with each other, and I think we all took advantage of that and made a lot of new friends”. Later in October, Naples gathered once again with Ft. Myers BBYO for an event at the Haunted Corn Maze at Farmer Mike’s U-Pick. Nearly twenty Jewish teens took on the maze on October 19 and all twenty came out ready for more. In December, Naples BBG (girls) and AZA (boys) will gather Saturday, December 7 and Sunday, December 8 for their winter sleepover and chapter elections, which are both member-only events. On Sunday, December 8 BBYO is hosting our first annual Latke Cookoff at Temple Shalom. This event is open to all Jewish 6th-12th graders in the Greater Naples community. The event will be held from 12:00pm-1:45pm and it will include lunch, surprise judges, and gift cards for the winners. Register in advance at bit.ly/latkes1. If you are a Jewish teen in grades 8th-12th, you are eligible for BBYO membership in Naples. BBYO is a pluralistic youth movement. We welcome all Jews regardless of affiliation or temple membership. Membership is a one-time fee and lasts through 12th grade graduation. With membership comes opportunities for chapter leadership, discounts to almost all local and regional programming, and the opportunity to participate in BBYO summer programming. For more information on membership or questions about summer programming, contact Jess Zimmerman. Happy Chanukah from BBYO! To register for these great events and to learn more about local programming, email Jessica Zimmerman at jesszimmerman@bbyo.org.

“Shalom Chaverim” means “hello friends” in Hebrew. Shalom Chaverim is also the name of an exciting volunteer opportunity at Temple Shalom where Temple volunteers welcome members and guests who come to Temple Shalom for worship, learning and social opportunities. Temple Shalom is focused on inclusivity, diversity, openness and welcoming, and as such, Shalom Chaverim is a cadre of greeters welcoming and assisting members and guests to our Temple for Erev Shabbat and High Holy Day services. Aside from welcoming people, we help them with their name tags or badges, provide directions, assist with seating, prayer books, or hearing assisted devices. If you are interested in volunteering and becoming a part of Shalom Chaverim, please contact Andy Karpman at andy.karpman@gmail.com. Signing up to be a greeter in the lobby or in the Sanctuary is easy and only takes a few minutes. We are a congregation dedicated to “Audacious Hospitality” and to helping our members connect and engage. Being part of Shalom Chaverim is fun and you will be making a difference to all of those visiting our temple by helping to make their experience at Temple Shalom warm and welcoming.

Bereavement Group for Members of the Temple Shalom Community In the spirit of our tradition, which calls us to perform the mitzvah of Nihum Avelim (comforting mourners), Temple Shalom will be offering a Bereavement Support Group for people who are grieving for a loved one. The group, which will observe confidentiality of communication, will meet on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00pm. Group size is limited to twelve people. The facilitators, Arline Kaplan, Ph.D., and Leslie Wasserman, M.A., are members of Temple Shalom. Both Arline and Leslie, licensed in New York and Michigan respectively, have extensive experience with groups and with people experiencing grief and loss. “We are hopeful that sharing our stories with empathic, compassionate others will allow some healing, solace and peace into our lives. We can each be the gift that can possibly help to heal the wound.” Feedback from groups members has been positive:

“I feel better after attending this group.”

“We are all at different places, but I see ourselves evolving.”

“The facilitators are professionals.”

“I’m confortable that this is private. I can say whatever is on my mind.”

“I’ve learned so much being in this group.”

“It has been a pleasure to meet the people in this group.”

Please email Ana Maria Tamargo at Atamargo@naplestemple.org to sign up. There is no fee for this program. 15

CONNECT WITH US INTRODUCING THIS YEAR’S LAMED VAVNIK AWARD WINNERS We see Art and Sue Bookbinder everywhere in the community side-by-side. Yes, the white cane tips us off that Art needs a bit of guidance to maneuver his way in the world, but their total collaboration in life goes far beyond dealing with his blindness. Or Art supporting Sue as she manages a life affected by multiple sclerosis. They epitomize a married couple doing nearly everything together. The Bookbinders together are the recipients of our third Lamed Vavnik Award, which will be presented to them and the other two social justice activists, Ida Margolis and Reverend Tony Fisher, at Temple services on January 10. Initiated three years ago as a way to honor long-time social activist Ann Jacobson, the title of this award refers to the 36 righteous people in the world at any given time whose humble acts of benevolence keep the world from destruction. Neither Art nor Sue has ever done what they do for recognition. There’s the humility. In spite of serious health issues that would have sidelined others with less stamina and desire to give, they have brought blessings to countless individuals. Sue and Art were married in 1970. In 1976, Art learned he had retinitis pigmentosa, or RP, that would eventually rob him of sight. A few years later, Sue was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. “Because RP is hereditary and because MS caused frequent fatigue,” Sue says, “we decided not to have children.” Instead, they focused their many intellectual and financial gifts on the improvement of the world. Sue graduated from college with a degree in economics and went into data processing. “My timing was right,” Sue says, “as computers were just coming into widespread usage in business.” She realized that to recruit and retain good data processing people required a Human Resources department, so she started one. Two people in the HR department at Chemical Bank quickly grew to 50 under her management. Soon, after several bank mergers, she was managing an IT division with 12,000 employees. Through her skill, data processing turnover went from 70 percent to eight percent. “I loved this work because it allowed me to give back intellectually. But I retired early because the MS was affecting my thought processing.” Retirement gave her more opportunities to donate her time, talents and treasure to improve the world. After the Bookbinders moved to Florida full-time in 2006, Sue says, “We made new friends, all of them extraordinary people—all philanthropic.” Some of her many involvements: co-chair of local chapter of American Technion Society—a high-technology university in Haifa, Israel; organizing and running a contemporary fiction group for WCA; Jewish Book Festival, where she was a maven for its first three years; Women’s Giving Circle—a group of 50 women who each donate $1000 a year to a fund that makes grants to 501(c)(3) non-profits; and, of course, Lighthouse of Collier—her passion. That’s when Art really perks up. Lighthouse is the main focus of his life these days, since he established it as the county’s first—and only—rehabilitation organization for the visually impaired. Once he knew he was destined to become blind, he left his career as executive director and CEO of the New York Diagnostic Center and began to work with engineers to develop high-tech items for the blind. “I knew nothing about blindness,” Art says, “so I did this to learn—to help myself.” He started the Bookbinder Group to manufacture and sell items to assist the blind with their daily activities. When asked what got him started in philanthropy, Art doesn’t have to think long. “From 1980-86, I was going through a loss-of-vision phase, thinking about my own loss, not others’. I heard a five-year-old clicking his way along the hall with his cane. I’d been very athletic as a kid—sports had meant so much to me—and I wanted to make sports possible for this child and others like him. That moment I told myself that someday I wanted to help totally blind kids to be able to do more, even 16

CONNECT WITH US Continued... though they weren’t sighted during the first 30 years of their lives as I was.” That’s why Lighthouse of Collier exists—as a non-profit that provides free help for 20,000-plus blind or visually impaired children and adults in this county. As if that were not enough, Art was for five years a mentor with Champions for Learning. Imagine a totally blind man making his way into a high school, meeting his mentee during lunch hour once a week throughout the school year. Yes, Sue drove him to the school, but for the rest, he was on his own. “It brought me great satisfaction for the five years I did it—taking the same child from middle school through graduation.” Additionally, Art has been active with the Naples Men’s Discussion Group, and the couple has given generously to Naples Orchestra and Chorus, and Gulfshore Playhouse. Art needs many walls to display—if he weren’t so humble—awards he’s received: Philanthropist of the year in 2014 from Community Foundation of Southwest Florida; 25 Over 50, given in 2017 by The Naples Daily News; an award for Overcoming Challenges and Achieving Dreams, given in 2018, by the Board of Collier County Commissioners; The Art & Sue Bookbinder Award first sponsored by their donation and now given annually by Lighthouse of Collier. And all this while, over the years, joining together to battle Art’s four major cancers. How’s that for minimizing their own conditions in favor of working for tikkun olam?

TIKKUN OLAM

Tikkun Olam Council Chair Ken Goldstein Reducing Gun Violence: A Goal Everyone Can Agree On The Tikkun Olam Council (TOC) held a town hall meeting on September 10 to begin a dialogue within our congregation about the rise of gun violence. Rabbi Miller began with a discussion of Jewish values, followed by discussions within small groups. A spirit of nonpartisanship was cultivated throughout the evening, Three ways to address gun violence were identified by most participants as ones they could support as individuals: 1. Expanding background checks 2. Red flag laws 3. Banning assault style weapons. In today’s world, where you stand on any particular issue depends on where you sit. That may be true for most issues, but not on the issue of reducing gun violence. We may not agree on how to get there but we can agree on the goal itself. A follow-up meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, December 10 at 6:30pm to focus on current federal and state laws that cover the top issues from the first town hall. This session will continue our focus on non-partisan information sharing and learning. Guest speakers include Rabbi Adam Miller, Lt. Rich Hampton (CCSO) and Gay Valimont (Florida Chapter Lead of Moms Demand Action). We will also discuss how we can begin the process of advocating for change as individuals. The CEO of Dick’s Sporting Goods, Ed Stack, has been a leader in taking action in his stores as well as by speaking on gun related issues. In a recent article (see link below) I was struck by his comment after he visited families from Parkland: “But what I found surprising of those families, not one of them said we need to ban all guns, that guns have to go away. What they said was we need to find common-sense changes to our gun laws so what happened to our family doesn’t happen anyplace else. If those families feel that way, I have no idea how the guys in Washington can’t come together and find a solution to this problem.” We hope to see you at the next meeting and we look forward to working together on finding “common-sense changes to our gun laws.” For more information about the TOC please contact Ken Goldstein at kengoldstein@mac.com. *NY Times article - https://tinyurl.com/ur7bhl5 28

Mitzvah Day - Sunday, January 12 9:00am - 12:00pm SAVE THE DATE! In last month’s issue of “The Voice” we introduced some new editions to our annual Mitzvah Day event. This month we’d like to remind you of some of the projects and activities you will find familiar. Jane Perman and Alicia Feldman will once again be heading up the Mitzvah Day Blood Drive. Walk-ins are always welcome but appointments are strongly encouraged. Please contact Jane at the phone number or email below to schedule an appointment. Donations of homemade or store bought goods are much appreciated for those who donate blood.

A Chance to Save Lives! Blood Drive Temple Shalom Mitzvah Day Sunday, January 12 8AM to 1PM To reserve a donation time contact Jane Perman at 592-7555 or permanjane@comcast.net Can’t commit to a time? No worries! We just need your name & phone number to ensure adequate staffing.

A favorite activity for younger children on Mitzvah Day is baking dog biscuits for the local animal shelter. Little hands love forming these treats and decorating bags for special delivery to the shelter. Once again this year we will be collecting travel-sized toiletries for homeless school children here in Collier County. Please bring your donations of shampoo, soap, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, etc., to Temple Shalom anytime between now and Mitzvah Day and drop them into the collection bins in the main lobby or Preschool lobby. The Purple Bag Project is an activity that benefits children in foster care, and those going through chemotherapy. These children experience long waits while in court and during treatments. They truly appreciate handheld games, puzzle andactivity books, coloring books, crayons, sugar-free candy and snacks such as pretzels and veggie chips. Collection bins are located in the main Temple lobby as well as the Preschool. On Mitzvah Day we will package up these items and the toiletries for distribution to those in need. Please watch your email for more information on Mitzvah Day!

It’s never too early to start thinking about Mitzvah Day’s most popular program, Meals of Hope. Last year, as in years past, Temple Shalom members came together to help end hunger by forming assembly lines and packing over 50,000 meals for those in need here in Collier County. As of October 12, Meals of Hope, with the help of volunteers like our Temple Shalom One Family, have packed 60,077,736 meals. We need hands-on volunteers on Mitzvah Day, but we also need your donations. Each meal costs just $.25. Your donation of $18 would fund 72 meals. $50 buys 200 meals. For $100, 400 meals can be provided. Helps us get the ball rolling. Please send your donation to Temple Shalom with “Meals of Hope” in the memo line. You can also donate online at www.naplestemple.org/payment.php and choose Mitzvah Day Donations from the drop-down menu. Thank you! 29

Chanukah in Kiev Judi Palay

For several years, Temple Shalom in Naples has joined Temple Ahavat Shalom in support of the Ha-tikvah Progressive Jewish Congregation Program in Kiev. Last year, through our joint efforts, the program provided twenty children with hot weekend lunches for an entire year-meals that they cannot afford to get at home. We also contributed to the Pesach Seder for 102 participants. We need to keep this vital program going and to help with additional youth programs. As you prepare to buy a week of gifts for the children or grandchildren in your life, please consider setting aside the dollar value of one night’s gifts for the Jewish children of Kiev - children who also need our love and support. Consider, too, that this is a unique teaching moment for a child, an opportunity for them to participate in the mitzvah of giving while reinforcing the concept of tzedakah. Please send a check to Temple Shalom, with DNFU (Do Not Forget Us) in the memo line and know how grateful these children will be. If you have any questions please call Judi Palay 239-513-9141 or email judi@palay.org.
