HIGH HOLY DAYS 2019/5780 High Holy Days Flower Sponsorships Sponsoring the flowers that decorate the bimah on the High Holy Days is a lovely way to beautify the Sanctuary and start the new year off with a gift to support Temple Shalom! It is also a meaningful way to honor a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, commemorate a wedding, birthday or other important event that occurred since last Rosh Hashanah or that you are looking forward to in the year to come. It is also a special way to remember a loved one. Acknowledgment of your sponsorship will appear in The High Holy Days handout and in The Voice. Bimah flower sponsorships are available for $200.00 for each of the holidays. Please contact Randi Butterwoth in the Temple Shalom office if you wish to be a sponsor.

Ushers & Greeters Would you enjoy meeting fellow members of Temple Shalom on the High Holy Days and wish them a Shana Tova? Ushers and greeters play a very important role in the High Holy Days. Greeters provide a warm welcome to people as they come to services and assist with things like finding name badges and handing out programs. Ushers welcome people into the Sanctuary and Social Hall and assist with seating, large print prayer books and hearing devices. If you would like to be a part of either of these two groups, or if you have questions, please call Julie Fischer in the Temple Shalom office for more information.

Calling all Shofar Blowers! Whether you are a veteran on the ram’s horn or you would like to learn how it’s done, we invite you to participate in this mitzvah on the High Holy Days. No experience necessary. Please contact Julie Fischer in the Temple Shalom office for more information. The shofar is made from a hollowed-out ram’s horn and is the world’s oldest wind instrument. Blowing the shofar is one of the most ancient rites in the High Holy Day services. The sound of the shofar is primitive and piercing, intended to rouse worshippers from their spiritual slumber and serve as a clarion call to repent and reconnect with our faith, our family and God. It is also meant to remind us of the Biblical story of Abraham, the 4

first Jew, and his beloved son Isaac. In the Book of Genesis, God commands Abraham to sacrifice his only son. This test of faith is revealed at the last moment, when God sends an angel to spare Isaac and instruct Abraham to sacrifice a ram instead.

CANTOR’S MESSAGE

Cantor

Donna Azu Becoming B’nai Mitzvah at Temple Shalom Each and every moment we celebrate a child becoming bar or bat mitzvah in our congregational family is a moment of awe and wonder. Parents reflect on their son’s or daughter’s childhood, grandparents on the job their own children have done taking on the role of parent. As clergy, Rabbi Miller and I are often caught up thinking about the journey this particular child has taken to arrive at this critical moment – the moment where they very publicly take their place in our community as a Jewish adult. At Temple Shalom, we have a long process to help our students prepare successfully for this important moment. Beginning years before their thirteenth birthday, we assign bar and bat mitzvah dates. (I am currently working on the 2021/2022 dates!) In the fifth grade, we meet with parents to assign dates and orient them to our process. In sixth grade, we meet again with both the students and parents to explore the three Jewish principles of Torah (learning), Avodah (prayer) and G’milut Chasadim (acts of loving kindness) and how it relates to their upcoming journey. Learning as a family is a powerful way for us to start this process. And then, 9-10 months before the bar or bat mitzvah date – the real learning begins!

New voices are always welcome!

We see preparing for this event as much more than learning to chant Torah and Haftarah. During their studies, our students, together with me, Rabbi Miller, and our b’nai mitzvah tutors, travel on the journey of learning. They study their Torah portion in depth and learn to chant Torah. They delve into t’fillah and prepare to not just lead the service with Hebrew proficiency, but with meaning. It is our honor to guide them, teach them, learn from them, and watch them grow. Throughout the time our students spend in our program, they work with our Temple Shalom staff, their family, their friends and classmates. Their journey is also supported by the Temple Shalom Men’s Club and Sisterhood, as well as our Synagogue Board and the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples. We feel so privileged to share in the most significant moments of the Jewish lifecycle. As we embrace the upcoming 2019/2020 b’nai mitzvah group, it is our great joy to make this moment meaningful and memorable for each and every student. B’Shalom, Cantor Donna M. Azu 6

RABBI EDUCATOR’S MESSAGE

Rabbi Educator Ariel Boxman

To my new Temple Shalom Family, I am so excited to meet you all and begin my work as your Rabbi Educator! I join your community, along with my husband Asher and two young boys, Jacob (2) and Matan (3 months) from Dallas, Texas where I served as a rabbi educator for six years. During this time, I directed the Lifelong Learning Department, managed the Pre-k to 12th grade educational programs, taught adult education classes and had various clergy responsibilities. I have a great passion for Jewish education and I am thrilled to be continuing my work at Temple Shalom. Prior to my work in Dallas, I served various student pulpits, worked as a Hillel rabbi and spent many summers on faculty at URJ Camps. I love working with children and adults and guiding them along their individual Jewish journeys. Nothing makes me happier than seeing a child discover a passion for Judaism and a sense of pride in their faith. It is an honor to join you and your loved ones along these journeys. My own journey began when I was born during my father’s last year of rabbinical school. While his influence on my Jewish identity was great, it wasn’t until I spent a semester of high school studying in Israel that I developed a true passion for Judaism and Jewish peoplehood. Being in Israel and having the opportunity to be so intimate with Jewish history and culture opened up a whole new world to me. It was after this semester of high school that I decided that I wanted to be a rabbi educator. I wanted to be able to pass along the gift of passion and education that I was given and so value. As I begin my work in Naples and get to know each of you individually, I look forward to learning with you and from you. I hope to bring new insight and innovation to your community and serve your congregation to the best of my ability. Thank you for this opportunity to join your community! My family and I are so happy to be here. B’Shalom, Rabbi Ariel Boxman

The Israel Book Discussion Group will meet on Monday, August 12, at 11:00am to review and discuss All the Rivers by Dorit Rabinyan. Copies will be available in the Perman Library. This book, published worldwide in seventeen languages, was initially banned from the required reading list in Israeli high schools by the Ministry of Education. The Ministry has since altered its stance to allow the book as an elective.

LEADERSHIP MESSAGE

Executive Director Deborah R. Fidel

Everyone says that summers at Temple Shalom are slow; well this summer was anything but! There have been so many exciting developments! Rabbi Boxman and her beautiful family arrived in Naples last month. Rabbi Boxman oversees the Religious School and adult education programs and she is also working with our Preschool students to learn about Jewish customs and traditions. It is a pleasure to watch her interact with our members as she learns about their educational interests and their children’s needs as students. She is busy finding new ways to engage members of all ages spiritually and educationally through innovative and engaging classroom and experiential educational programs for children, adults, and families. Stay tuned for some exciting new programs! We are very grateful to Susan Feld for her service last year as the Interim Religious School Director, and for her assistance to Rabbi Boxman as Rabbi Boxman transitioned into that role and Susan took the helm of the Preschool. How fortunate we are to have someone with Susan’s qualifications, professionalism and experience on our staff! Susan holds an undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education, a Master’s degree in Elementary Education, and a doctoral degree in Instruction and Curriculum Leadership in Early Childhood. She is an experienced teacher and administrator, serving as the director for many years over a NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) accredited preschool. She has also worked as an NAEYC consultant, served as a CDA (Child Development Associate) Professional Development Specialist, and holds a position as an adjunct professor of Early Childhood Education at FSW (Florida Southwestern State College). She and I have spent hours and hours working together over the summer to get ready for the school year and I am confident that our children are in excellent hands with her and her teaching team. I hope that you will stop by to meet Rabbi Boxman if you have not already had the pleasure and take a tour of our award-winning preschool with Susan Feld. Our adult education, Religious School and Preschool programs are poised to reach new heights of excellence this year; I hope that you and yours will take advantage of all that we offer.

Debra Antzis Federation Building Project Update At the end of June, Temple Shalom and the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples filed a joint application to Collier County to alter the zoning status of the parcel of Temple land that we hope Federation will be able to build on. This filing was made possible by a lot of behind the scenes work since December, when our membership approved the plan to lease Temple land to Federation. The County’s rezoning review process will likely take about fifteen months to complete, which means that, if the rezoning is approved, Federation will be able to break ground by the end of next summer or in the beginning of fall. Federation hopes to complete construction and take occupancy by late summer or early fall 2021. It has been a pleasure for our leadership to work together with Federation’s leaders, and I thank all who have put in time and effort so far on this project. I hope you all are enjoying your summer, and I look forward to seeing you in the fall! Best Regards, Debra 8

CONNECT WITH US Bereavement Group for Members of the Temple Shalom Community In the spirit of our tradition, which calls us to perform the mitzvah of Nihum Avelim (comforting mourners), Temple Shalom will be offering a Bereavement Support Group for people who are grieving for a loved one. The group, which will observe confidentiality of communication, will meet on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon beginning November 1. Group size will be limited to twelve people. The facilitators, members of Temple Shalom, are Arline Kaplan, Ph.D., and Leslie Wasserman, M.A. Both Arline and Leslie, licensed in New York and Michigan respectively, have extensive experience with groups and with people experiencing grief and loss. We are hopeful that sharing our stories with empathic, compassionate others will allow some healing, solace and peace into our lives. We can each be the gift that can possibly help to heal the wound. Please email Ana Maria Tamargo at Atamargo@naplestemple.org to sign up. There is no fee for this program.

A rline K aplan I was born, raised and educated (for years and years and years) in Philadelphia, PA. When the youngest of my three children entered 1st grade, I too went back to school in a master’s program. After completing my formal education and licensure, I joined Abington Memorial Hospital, a major suburban Philadelphia hospital, as a psychologist/neuropsychologist, working with patients and their families. Since relocating to Florida and becoming a full-time resident in 2000, my passion has been to use my psychology background and life experience to help adults regain strength, stability and sanity after those life events that shift the sands under our feet. The passing of my husband in 2010, followed by my son in 2013, have led me to understand, on many levels, bereavement/grief and its complicated aftermath. My spiritual beliefs have developed over time and have contributed to the regaining of equilibrium. Ronald Kaplan and I were married by Rabbi Miller at Temple Shalom in 2016. Together we have five children and five grandchildren. My educational background includes a Ph.D. from Temple University, four years of study at Philadelphia School of Psychoanalysis (where I really learned how to be a therapist), a Certificate from Drexel University for academic studies in neuropsychology and an internship and a post-doctoral fellowship in neuropsychology at Hahnemann University Hospital. I am licensed as a psychologist by the State of New York. Currently I maintain a part-time private practice in Naples. I view the work I am privileged to do with the people who walk through my door as a labor of love that provides me with a way to give back while staying focused on what matters in this finite lifetime.

Leslie Wasserman After growing up on Long Island, New York, I completed high school in Oak Park, Michigan. Marrying young, I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Education at Wayne State University in Detroit, but rather than teach, I chose to be a stay-at-home mother to my two children. Several years later, I attended graduate school and attained my Master’s Degree in Humanistic and Clinical Psychology. For almost thirty years, I’ve worked with adults in individual and group therapy. Many of my clients struggled with addictive disorders as well as trauma. I believe in the powerful transformation that comes with being listened to and respected, and from getting unconditional acceptance. I’m passionate about partnering with others to create a safe place to promote genuine healing. Presently, I lead a substance abuse group at David Lawrence Center. 12

LEARN WITH US Temple Director of Shal m Preschool

Planting seeds in the minds of our future.

Preschool

Susan Feld, Ed.S.

As the new director of Temple Shalom Preschool, it’s my pleasure to welcome children and families to our program. The teachers and other staff members have been busy this summer organizing classrooms and reviewing wonderful new curriculum materials. We are ready to greet the children on our first day of school, Monday, August 19. We know it’s our job to welcome children and families into our midst and to provide a smooth transition as children venture into the world beyond home. And so, we are implementing a new program in order to reach out to families. For authentic collaboration to take place with families, this program has been designed so parents may share insight, tips, and advice to staff about their particular child’s personality, development, and experiences. Story Gathering Day will provide an opportunity for families to meet one-on-one with their child’s teacher to share their child’s story before school begins. Parents will be able to share stories about family vacations, siblings in the home, the child’s favorite play things and level of independence. Story Gathering Day has been organized based on Karen Stephens’ article, “Building Informed Relationships: What Parents Can Teach Us About Their Children.” Getting a parent’s perspective will support teachers understanding about a child as he enters his new preschool classroom. The teacher will email families to make arrangements for the appointment for Story Gathering Day. Coffee With the Director will be an opportunity for parents to meet me! Join me in the Perman Library for coffee on Wednesday, August 14, at 10:00am. Afterwards, parents of our new children are invited to attend New Parent Orientation on Wednesday, August 14, at 10:30am. Classroom Visitation Day is scheduled for Friday, August 16 at 10:00am. I’m looking forward to working together, collaboratively with families and staff, to give our children the best experience in early childhood education we have to offer.

SISTERHOOD Greetings from Sisterhood! I hope everyone had a fun and restful summer. It was really hot here earlier than expected. People are beginning to come back to Naples. And so, the Naples season begins!

Sisterhood President

Karen Cohn

Summer is the season when the Sisterhood Board works on the programs for the coming year luncheons, fun events and learning programs. The Program Committee worked hard on getting these confirmed. From the looks of things, it’s going to be a busy year for all of us! There will be something for everyone. There are evening events for those who can’t come to anything during the day. We don’t want to leave anyone out. These events will not be held at the Temple but at different locations. Be sure to check the e-blast for more information. We are looking forward to seeing you at all of these programs and if you would like to help with any of them please contact Ida Margolis at ida.margolis2@gmail.com or Barbara Druckman at barbdruckman@gmail.com.

Did you know all the purchases you make at the Judaica Shop help support the Religious School, Preschool, Temple projects and the Oneg? Did you know that we have the only Judaica Shop in the Greater Naples area? Judy Spintman and Carol Wolfe have ordered merchandise for the fall, acquiring some new tallitot from Israel among other things. After many years of service in the Judaica Shop, Judi is stepping down and Carol will be taking over the reins. Sisterhood is grateful to Judi for helping to make the Judaica Shop successful. Come and see the new merchandise! If you are looking for something to do in the morning we need some volunteers to work in the Shop. Scheduling is flexible. You do not have to commit to working every week. Please contact Carol Wolfe at cdwolfe2@comcast. net for more information.

ENDOWMENT CORNER

With a completed endowment gift of $10,000 or more you will become a member of our

Eternal Light society.

Can I gift my home or other real estate to the Temple Endowment fund? All types of real estate make excellent charitable gifts. Your current or vacation home, business or investment property or vacant land can be used to fund an endowment gift. Often a gift of real estate is the largest asset a donor can give. You receive an immediate tax deduction for the full appraised value and avoid capital gains taxes if you’ve held the property for more than 12 months. The Temple gets the full value of the property, since charities don’t pay capital gains taxes. Here’s an example of how one couple made a gift of property they no longer needed. Jack and Betty had a lifetime of memories tied up in their second home, a small lakefront cottage on 2 acres of land in upstate New York. They bought it for $50,000 in 1983 and used it for summer vacations and weekend retreats for many years. It also appreciated considerably through the decades. But when the upkeep - including maintenance, taxes and insurance - became too much and they no longer used it regularly, they decided it was time to divest. With no children and only one niece who wasn’t interested in taking it over, they decided to give it to their Temple. Selling the property, now worth $450,000, would mean a sizable capital gains tax and since they wanted to make an long-term impact in the life of their Temple, they decided to earmark the gift for the Temple endowment fund. Working with our partner, the Community Foundation of Collier County, we can assist you and your professional advisors to transfer the real estate and make this important gift for the benefit of Temple Shalom. If you have any questions about the many choices and possibilities for giving to our endowment program, please call me at 239-450-8112 or e-mail us at endowmentchair@naplestemple.org. We are ready and able to work with you and your professional advisors to create a customized plan that works best for both you and Temple Shalom. -Suzanne Low, J.D., CFP®, Endowment Chair

You will become a member of our Legacy Society with your signed letter of intent to make a gift in the future.

TIKKUN OLAM

Tikkun Olam Council Chair Ken Goldstein What K eeps You Up at Night? Sometimes it seems we get overwhelmed by reading the newspaper or watching the news on TV. There are families right here in Southwest Florida who don’t have enough food to eat. Gun violence continues unabated. Climate change is impacting life here in Florida. Anti-Semitism and racial injustice are increasing. What can we do? A quote by Barbara Bush gives us one answer. “Some people give time, some money, some their skills and connections, some literally give their life's blood. But everyone has something to give." In May, I attended my first RAC Consultation on Conscious Biennial in Washington, DC. I was inspired by the work being done by fellow Reform Jews across the country. I also learned more about the history of the RAC. Here is an excerpt from their website: “For more than 50 years, the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism ("the RAC")… has helped activate the Jewish community in the key debates and mobilizations of each generation since our founding, from the civil rights movement to contemporary fights over LGBT equality.” We have an opportunity to join other synagogues in Florida “… to support congregations working together, learning from one another, and effecting change on the local, state, provincial, and federal levels.” We can’t take on each and every issue facing our communities, but we can decide which one is most important to our community. What concerns you the most? And most important, what are you willing to give? I invite you to visit the RAC website at www.rac.org. I hope you will spend some time learning more about the RAC. I also hope you will consider attending the next Consultation on Conscious Biennial in May, 2021. We’ll communicate more information about specific dates and location when it is available. The Tikkun Olam Council (TOC) supports all forms of social action and social justice. There are many ways to get involved such as, working on issues as outlined above or volunteering at a local organization that is important to you. You are welcome to attend our meetings. Please contact Ken Goldstein at kengoldstein@mac.com for specific dates and times.
