CLERGY MESSAGE
Senior Rabbi Rabbi Adam F. MillerCamp Matters For Our Future
In June, I spent two weeks serving as faculty at URJ Camp Coleman in Cleveland, Georgia, our regional URJ camp. This marked my 9th summer at Coleman, and 17th overall as either faculty or staff at a URJ affiliated camp. Each time I return home, I am asked about my reasons for making camp such an important priority in my rabbinate. Let me be honest. I don’t go there for the accommodations, fine dining, or the occasional scorpion(!) in my room (yep, there are scorpions in the Georgia mountains). I prioritize camp because I believe that a summer at a Jewish camp is one of the greatest gifts we can give our children.
Jewish overnight camps provide a magical and transformative experience for our youth, where Jewish kids spend time feeling part of the majority. They can look around and see other kids who share their story, know how to use the words “kvetch” and chutzpah correctly, and recognize what a real bagel should taste like.
Campers experience that being Jewish is not limited to attendance at religious school. Rather, one’s Jewish identity extends beyond the synagogue walls to all aspects of life. Come to camp and you see campers enthusiastically chanting blessings before and after meals, participating joyfully in worship experiences, immersing themselves in interactive Jewish learning, and excited to welcome the arrival of Shabbat each week. In addition, camp creates a safe space for young adults to explore their Jewish identity and live in an environment shaped by Jewish values.
These values are on display every day at camp, especially the value of kehila , community. At programs, I see counselors and campers taking note of individuals who appear to be sitting separately and including them in the group. During Letter Lotto – a game where campers are rewarded for sending mail – entire bunks erupt in joy when they realize that one of their members had a letter selected. Those campers celebrate as if they had each won, feeling the connections between them. At the heart of it all are the relationships that begin with their shared Jewish identities. These young people will go on in life knowing that they are always part of the Jewish community, wherever they choose to attend college or build their lives.
Thank you to the many parents and grandparents in our community who enable their children and grandchildren to experience the gift of camp. Although this summer is nearly over, it is never too late to invest in our youth, and the future of our people. Speak with me if you want to learn more about how you can send young people in your family to camp next summer. Many scholarships are available, through Temple Shalom, the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples and other sources. Opportunities also exist for those interested in funding camp scholarships, bridging the gap so that as many children as possible can experience the gift of camp.
May the experiences at Jewish summer camp remain strong in the minds of our children, that they will forever feel that connection to their community in their hearts.
CLERGY MESSAGE
Cantor Donna Azu
As we begin to prepare ourselves for the upcoming High Holy Days season, we can say that, “This year the High Holy Days will be a very different experience,” because each and every year, we are different. Hopefully, we have been able to grow spiritually and emotionally from the cheshbonhanefesh , the selfaccounting, of the year before. In addition, each year our life experiences bring us new joys and, most likely, some new sadness.
After two and a half years of singing on my own, I’m thrilled to share that the adult choir will be joining me once again for our High Holy Days services and anyone who is fully vaccinated is welcome to sing with us! The choir will begin rehearsing on Thursday, August 25 and as always, WE WOULD LOVE TO ACCEPT NEW SINGERS!
Singing in the High Holy Days Choir is a great way to deepen your appreciation of the liturgy, and it’s also a great way to make some new friends! No previous choral experience is required, and you don’t have to be able to read music (although you will learn a little bit!). All you need is the desire to sing and learn. If you would like to sing with the choir this year, please let me know ASAP. You can contact me via email at dazu@ naplestemple.org or call me at (239) 455-3030. I look forward to hearing from you!

LEADERSHIP MESSAGE
Executive Director
Deborah Fidel
Talk about a WIN-WIN-WIN situation!!
We are so thrilled and proud that our Temple One Family has grown by leaps and bounds!! At the same time, we recognize that it is getting a little more challenging for all of us to know one another by name, especially when we are not at Temple, wearing our name tags. There is an easy fix to this (good) problem, and everyone benefits.
Did you know that we have a Membership Directory on our website that is only visible to members when they are logged in to the site? Some of you have uploaded photos of yourself already. Many have not. You can do so at any time.
OR….you can sit for a professional portrait that we will upload for you! There is no sitting fee and you can purchase the pictures at your convenience to cherish, frame and share with your family.
Temple member, and popular Naples photographer, Nicole Halmos, has graciously offered our members free photo shoots on Sunday, September 11, Monday, September 12, Sunday, October 9 and Monday, October 24 from 9:00am to 4:00pm. All you have to do is make an appointment using the form found here - tinyurl.com/ TSphotoshoot
We pride ourselves on being a “relational congregation,” where we wear nametags to help us know one another by name. Including your photo in our directory is one more thing that we can do to keep that “One Family feeling” going strong.
Thank you so much for your cooperation.

At Temple Shalom, the act of remembering is done in a very tangible way. We publish a Sefer Zichronot, a Memorial Book, listing the names of our loved ones who have died since last Yom Kippur, and those we remember from years past. A copy of that book is placed in the Holy Ark during the Yizkor service on Yom Kippur. The Memorial Book will be available at the Yizkor service on Yom Kippur and will also be accessible on the Temple Shalom website. If you would like to include the names of your loved ones, please complete the form below. Send completed form to Temple Shalom, 4630 Pine Ridge Road, Naples, FL 34119
Volunteer Highlight
VOLUNTEER GREETERS OFFER MORE THAN A WELCOME
By Carole J Greene“Shabbat shalom.” “We’re glad you’re here.” “Is this your first time with us? “Are you new to Naples?”
You may hear any or all of these greetings when you approach Temple Shalom’s main entrance to attend a Shabbat or holiday service. As a “Relational Congregation,” we want everyone to feel welcome and comfortable at Temple. Our Greeters Group is aptly called “Shalom Chaverim,” which means “Hello Friends.”
In addition to extending a hand and a smile, our Greeters also serve a very important function. In these times, when security is on all our minds, our volunteer greeters are also our eyes and ears. If they see someone who seems nervous or out of place, they “See Something, Say Something” by alerting the security officer on duty.
Nancy and Jack Wiadro, longtime Temple members, have been greeters for close to a decade. As a result of their extensive involvement in Temple affairs, they recognize many of our “regulars” at weekly Shabbat services.
If someone new enters, they suggest that they make a name tag and sign the guest book. Nancy said, “A friendly greeting helps visitors know that we want to know you.”
“I chose to do this because the first thing people should see when they come in the doors is the smiling face of someone saying ‘Shabbat shalom; we’re glad you’re here.’ A greeter is not asking anything of them. It’s fun to see old friends, and meet newcomers, attending for the first time. I can direct them to the right people. Someone new in town, ‘shopping shuls,’ I might introduce to Executive Director Deborah Fidel, or membership chair Bobbie Katz.”
Jack said, “I chose this volunteer activity because I enjoy the encounter with our guests and members as they enter. My presence starts the warming-up process, not just inside the front door but also outside. I’m physically able to help people out of the car, especially if they use a walker or wheelchair, or I just offer an arm. If it’s raining, I have an umbrella handy to keep them dry as I walk them to the door.”
Jack points to an additional benefit. “I’ve never been a public speaker. I grew up bashful, reticent. Being a greeter has helped me overcome that. I like being part of the process without having to be in the spotlight.”
Nancy is no stranger to volunteering. She says it’s part of her genetic makeup—her mother and grandmother set the example. She has been elected to the Board, chaired major fundraisers, sung in the choir, and baked for Sisterhood Oneg Shabbats. When COVID hit, she shopped for and delivered groceries to families and offered rides to congregants who requested them. “We believe strongly in supporting the Temple. By volunteering, we earn ‘psychic income.’ Working with the Temple to keep our traditions alive has made Jack and me incredibly wealthy, emotionally and spiritually.”
“Being a greeter has a selfish aspect,” Jack said. “It makes us feel good.”
Even the newest Temple member can stand in the lobby, smile, and offer a warm welcome. It is a great way to meet people. If that sounds like something you’d like to try, let Deborah Fidel know by calling the Temple Shalom office at 239-455-3030, or emailing her at dfidel@ naplestemple.org. Anyone can earn that “psychic income” that Nancy and Jack Wiadro so highly prize.

“Treattheearthwell.Itwasnotgiventoyoubyyourparents, itwasloanedtoyoubyyourchildren.”
- Kenyanproverb
At the time that God created the first human beings, God led them around all the trees of the Garden of Eden and said: “Look at My works! See how beautiful they are—how excellent! For your sake I created them all. See to it that you do not spoil and destroy My world; for if you do, there will be no one else to repair it.” (Midrash Ecclesiastes Rabbah 7:13). My Boy Scout leader put it more bluntly, “Boys, if you don’t leave the campsite in better shape than when we arrived, I’ll kick your butts!”
Our environment is suffering, and each of us can make a difference in helping to improve it. It is our responsibility to preserve and protect the planet. Our stewardship of the planet is a longstanding part of our religious heritage, and part of our commitment to tikkunolam , repairing the world.
This summer, commit to lending a hand in at least one way, by helping with an environmental project or advocating for environmental justice. Take Action. Find a non-profit organization near you which reflects your interests, and see what you can do.
Here are some ideas:
Keep America Beautiful - Collier County (www.keepcollierbeautiful.com) Lee County (www.klcb.org) September 17 - International Coastal Cleanup
Growing Climate Solutions (www.GrowingClimateSolutions.org) - Attend their speaker series or participate in one of their events.
Collier County Waterkeepers – (www.colliercountywaterkeeper.org)
Calusa Waterkeepers (Lee County) – (www.calusawaterkeeper.org)
Friends of Rookery Bay – (www.rookerybay.org)
Conservancy of SW Florida – (www.conservancy.org)
Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary – (www.corkscrew.audubon.org)
Don’t see what you’re looking for? Try going to VolunteerMatch.org and enter your location and area of interest. There’s a volunteer opportunity for everyone!
Advocate for a healthy environment. Urge your Congressional Representatives to support legislation that puts us on the path to a clean energy economy, restores American leadership on climate action, safeguards the natural world, and advances environmental justice.
Strive to leave things in better shape than when you arrived. Each one of us can make a difference in the world through simple acts of caring for the environment and future generations.

For many generations, Jews have made it a custom to remember their loved ones and sanctify their joyous events with a charitable donation. At Temple Shalom, there are several ways for us to remember or honor a loved one and give thanks for milestone events in our lives. Please consider a yahrzeit plaque, Tribute Garden paver, leaf on the Tree of Life, or dedicating a Torah portion in the Illustrated Torah as a permanent remembrance. Your generosity will contribute to the future of Temple Shalom.
Scan the QR codes below with the camera on your cellphone to go directly to an order form, or call the Temple Shalom office for assistance.
TZEDAKAH
Showing We Care
Contributions to Temple Shalom funds are wonderful ways to show your appreciation of family and friends, to celebrate happy occasions and to honor the memories of loved ones. We suggest a minimum donation of chai ($18.00). With a minimum donation of chai, a notice of your gift will be sent to the honoree and mention will be published in The Voice. To make a donation, visit the donation page on the website at www.naplestemple.org, or call the Temple office at 239-455-3030.
