CLERGY MESSAGE
Rabbi
Adam F. Miller
Finding Blessings at this Time of Darkness I spent weeks thinking about what I should write for this bulletin article (much to the chagrin of our editor). The world around us feels surreal, filled with uncertainty and unknowns. During a recent drive, I heard a radio host ask listeners, “If you could go back in time, what would you tell your 2019 self?” Besides the humorous notes of “Buy stock in Purell and toilet paper,” “Download Zoom now” and “Make sure your Amazon Prime is up to date” were some remarkable gems: “Be comfortable with the uncomfortable”; “Practice patience”; and one of my favorites, “Appreciate every moment of joy.” The last one struck a chord in me. With all that has happened over the last five months, it is easy for one to dwell on the challenges: the ongoing pandemic, the broken sense of normalcy, a life of social distancing, and the lack of a definitive end in sight. While we cannot ignore those aspects of this pandemic, they do not have to be the only perspective. Amidst this darkness, we can see even more clearly the moments of joy and light in our lives. These celebrations may have been overlooked in the past, when life felt different. Now, we need to appreciate and embrace those moments to lift our spirits and give us hope for a better tomorrow. This is a time to celebrate every milestone – big or small -- expressing joy and gratitude. Discover the power of the Jewish teaching that every moment in life has a blessing associated with it. From seeing a rainbow, to consuming food, to doing an activity for the first time. Mark moments of happiness, laughter, or hope by saying a blessing – be it in a traditional Hebrew format or words that come from your heart. The words matter less than the act of celebrating and acknowledging joy. Saying, “Thank you God for…” transforms any moment from dull or mundane, into a time of holiness and light. Appreciate every moment of joy, and this time of darkness will be brighter than you ever realized. Even more powerfully, you can share your light with others as we do each Friday night during our Shabbat service. Our ritual of telling good news now takes place on Facebook during the service. The effect remains the same, even as it is amplified, lifting the spirits of those who watch the service in real-time, and also giving light to others who to learn of the good news at a later time. Into the darkness God spoke, and there was light. May the words of gratitude we express for the sparks of light in our lives bring rays of hope and blessing to our world during this time of darkness. L’Shalom, Rabbi Adam Miller

CLERGY MESSAGE
Cantor
Donna Azu
At a Shabbat service on February14, just a few weeks before Covid-19 took over and changed our lives, my fantastic and talented accompanist, Jim Cochran, surprised Rabbi Miller and me with a gift in honor of our ten year anniversary. Yes, it’s been ten wonderful years since both Rabbi Miller and I joined Temple Shalom! Jim commissioned Cantor Jonathan Comisar to write a piece marking our ten year anniversary. For months, Jim planned for the surprise to take place when Cantor Barbara Ostfeld would be in attendance speaking about her book. Toward the end of the service, Jim stood and invited Cantor Comisar and violist, Jesse Goebel to join Cantor Ostfeld on the bimah to play his composition of Hanna Senesch’s poem, “There Are Stars” (Yeish Kochavim). It was a stunning and beautiful performance and an incredibly moving evening. Jim, thank you for your incredibly thoughtful and generous gift! You have been a wonderful addition to Temple Shalom and I’m grateful to have you as my friend and musical partner! To listen to Cantor Comisar’s beautiful composition, please click here. L’Shalom, Cantor Donna Azu
There Are Stars (Yeish Kochavim) by
Hanna Senesch
There are stars up above so far away we only see their light long long after the star itself is gone. And so it is with people we loved, Their memories keep shining ever brightly Though their time with us is done. But the stars that light up the darkest night, These are the lights that guide us. As we live our days, these are the ways we remember, we remember. As we live our days, these are the ways we remember, we remember.

LEADERSHIP MESSAGE
President
Daryl Sissman
March, April, May, June, July….. It’s been almost five months since we have been together physically at Temple for Shabbat services, Torah study, Religious School, Sisterhood lunches, Board meetings and so, so, much more. I can’t believe it. By now, you are well aware of our transition to a virtual community and all the outstanding opportunities to worship, learn and stay connected to your friends at Temple Shalom. It is truly impressive to see how quickly and seamlessly we pivoted to an online community. Nevertheless, we all long to return to being together, being greeted warmly on a Friday night, seeing our friends at the oneg, hanging out in the Perman Library while our kids learn about their heritage, and making memories with our One Family. The Physical Reopening Task Force, chaired by Dr. Allen Weiss, continues to meet and make informed, measured recommendations to the Board of Trustees about when and how to do so. The situation here in Naples is fluid and we are doing our best to be both responsive to conditions and proactive. Your health, safety and well-being are our highest priority. A well-run organization manages the day-today challenges (that seem to pop up out of nowhere sometimes!) without losing sight of important long-term projects and goals. I have been very impressed by the way our staff and clergy managed to keep their eyes on the ball, despite the daily challenges that COVID-19 presented. My goal as president is to work with our lay leaders, staff and clergy to address the issues of the day, while building a strong future for the next generation. The Strategic Planning Group continued the work that started long before our world changed in March. Their efforts have continued throughout the pandemic and guides my focus on the future. The committee chairs, Dave Rutstein and Howard Solot have done a great job at steering that process and keeping it going via zoom. The Governance committee, which started revamping our bylaws and policies in 2019, is back in full swing. As the current crisis has taught us, our work products are living documents that we will continually adapt to meet the changing needs of our congregation. I remain committed to thinking about our long-term objectives, and how we can measure our performance. When we think about strategic planning and governance, we gain insight into the type of performance we need to meet our goals. Please reach out to me directly at president@naplestemple.org with any suggestions or concerns about these projects or anything else on your mind! L’Shalom, Daryl Sissman, President

Simchas Mazel tov to Bobbie and Gene Katz! On July 5, they became great-grandparents to Elara Rose, daughter of their grandson, Matthew and his wife, Theresa. Elara weighed in at a healthy 7.3 pounds and 19 ¾ inches. Matthew and Theresa both work for the Navy where they are involved with space programs. Elara is named after one of the moons of Jupiter.
M aking a Difference The Maimonides Institute for Medicine, Ethics, and the Holocaust (MIMEH) and New York Medical College, (NYMC) have announced a partnership to provide bioethics education as part of the school’s new Master’s degree in Biomedical Ethics and Humanities under the direction of Stacy Gallin, D.M.H. (MIMEH) and Ira Bedzow, Ph.D. (NYMC). The project is funded by a grant from The Allen and Lillian D. Menkin Family Trust. Dr. Menkin has been engaged in using the mass breach of medical ethics that occurred in the Third Reich as a framework for examining issues in bioethics and human rights for over 40 years. According to Dr. Menkin, “it is both appropriate and necessary to draw upon and adapt the lessons of the Holocaust to meet today’s challenges. By virtue of their mission and heritage, MIMEH and NYMC are uniquely positioned to accomplish this. It is a privilege and honor to support their collaboration.”

MEN’S CLUB While we all wait for a return to what will be the new “normal,” the Men’s Club is preparing for the next year’s events. Hopefully, we will be able to engage in the planned activities. Regardless, we will continue to support the Temple, the school, and the greater community in any way we can.
to
Men’s Club President Ron Yasbin
These past weeks we have been involved in contacting all the male members of the Temple Shalom family (those who belong to the Men’s Club and those who don’t) in order to encourage everyone join as well as to provide ideas and suggestions for how we can further serve the community. The response has been positive and, hopefully, we will grow our membership even more and keep receiving suggestions. In addition to hearing about these ideas, we are in need of volunteers to help organize events and to assume leadership roles. Specifically, we are looking for a Membership Chair and a Communications Chair. All interested members should contact me to discuss these positions.
Events and programs that are tentatively planned include: our participation in Mitzvah Day, the Purim Carnival, joint luncheon with the Sisterhood, an evening talk sponsored by the Sustainability Committee, Sunday brunches, the annual Men’s Club Dinner Theatre Night at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre (musical will be “On Your Feet”), members Deli Night, football night, career mentoring for high school students, as well as our repeating activities (going to the Alamo Range, golf outings, etc.). We would also like to organize grandfather/ father/guardian -children events It goes without saying that all of these events will depend heavily on safety concerns with respect to Covid-19 as well as our obtaining volunteers and leaders. Now is a great time to give some thought to activities and services you would like to see happen. Stay safe and keep healthy. L’Shalom, Ron

SISTERHOOD Moving Onward The last five months have been somewhat difficult to navigate, but Sisterhood women are resilient. We will get through this—and have a better year. I hope you and your family are well. If you are up north, I hope you are cooler then we are in Florida. The Sisterhood Board is working on ways to keep us all connected, even though we are not able to gather at Temple. We are hoping to use Zoom to offer some of the programs that we had planned to present at our monthly luncheons. One advantage is that even those of you who are up north will be able to participate! Watch your email for more information.
Sisterhood President
The Sisterhood fundraiser, “Honey from the Heart,” is underway. The response has been Karen Cohn wonderful – many congregants are taking advantage of this opportunity to do the “double mitzvah” of sending a sweet Rosh Hashanah Greeting to family and friends, while supporting Sisterhood at the same time. Thank you to everyone who has already participated. Just a reminder that you need to place your order by Friday, August 21, if you want your jar of honey to be delivered in time for Rosh Hashanah. To order honey click here. Sisterhood’s popular Book Bag will be held on Zoom at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 13. Check your email for the link. Everyone is welcome! On Thursday, October 1, from 10:30am to 11:30am, Sisterhood is co-sponsoring the program “Be an Informed Voter!” with Hadassah. A representative from the League of Women Voters will share information about the six amendments that will be on the ballot. Mark your calendars now and watch for an email as well as information in the September issue of The Voice on how to register for this very informative Zoom program. One other special date to mark on your calendar – Wednesday, February 17. If all goes according to plan, we will have a special Fashion Show and Luncheon at Temple. Keep your fingers crossed . . . . L’Shalom, Karen
The third Thursday of the month (*except where indicated) at 1:30pm. Please check your emails for Zoom information.

TIKKUN OLAM
Tikkun Olam Council Chair Ken Goldstein How Can I Make a Difference? Let’s Build Bridges. It’s been quite a year!…a pandemic, record business losses and unemployment, and turmoil over racial justice. What can our Jewish community do to address these all too real concerns? The Tikkun Olam Council (TOC) offers many opportunities for us to help. Abe and Pat Levy have been working with a group of African Americans to build bridges with the Jewish community here in Southwest Florida. We’ve already had meetings via Zoom to build understanding and trust. Contact Abe or Pat at abelevy48@gmail.com or patlevy46@gmail.com to get involved. I have also taken this time to learn more about my own unconscious biases and preconceptions. I’ve watched the movie, “13th” and read Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson and White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo. Are there other books or movies you would recommend on the topic of racial justice? Please share your suggestions with me. Another powerful way to make a difference is by the simple act of voting. No matter your politics, you can elect representatives that support your values and ideals. In order to have a voice, you need to vote. Are you registered to vote? In case the pandemic is still with us in November, have you registered to vote by mail? Here are links to help you; Where to register (click on the links) Collier County Lee County Other states
Obtain a Vote By Mail Ballot Collier County Lee County Other states Learn more about ways to participate in dialogue and change that “repairs the world” by joining us for other TOC initiatives such as: Mitzvah Day (soon to be Mitzvah Madness), Movies that Matter, support for Soviet Jewry, the Day of Learning, and the Sustainability Task Force. These projects build bridges that we as Jews can proudly cross in support of social action. For more information please contact kengoldstein@mac.com. COVID-19 is still with us. While there isn’t yet a vaccine… we do have a way to slow down this virus. To protect others, PLEASE CONSIDER WEARING A MASK. 23

Introducing the Stuart and Estelle Price Audio/Visual Fund We are thrilled to announce the creation of the Stuart and Estelle Price Audio/Visual Fund. Technology enables us to create meaningful, spiritual and engaging experiences for those in our sanctuary as well as those participating virtually. Stuart Warshauer, Men’s Club, Tussy Shnider and Iris Shur pioneered this area with the initial gift of the livestream video and the hearing loop system respectively. Each had an immediate impact as we connected with individuals unable to attend in person and enabled those with hearing impairments to feel more welcome and included. Stuart and Estelle Price recognized the potential to use technology in even greater ways. Their original gift resulted in the screens and projectors that transform our sanctuary experiences. The Prices lifted us up even further with the recent gift of this fund which provided for an improved and expanded livestream system. These critical upgrades come at a time when we are reliant even more heavily on our technology to keep us together. In addition, this new fund allows us to hire an A/V technician to operate our screens, direct the livestream and coordinate our systems for the best experience possible. Future donations to the Stuart and Estelle Price Audio/ Visual Fund will maintain the technology we now have and provide opportunities to upgrade further in the future. Thanks to the generosity of Stuart and Estelle, as well as our technology pioneers, Temple Shalom is truly One Family with many connections - always able to share sacred moments together no matter the miles that stand between us.
Thank You!
A ll Jews are responsible for each other. -Talmud, Shavuot
LEGACY SOCIETY MEMBERS The Temple Shalom Legacy Society honors those who have demonstrated the foresight to plan a future gift to Temple Shalom. By signing a non-binding Letter of Intent to make a gift in the future, you will become a member of our Legacy Society. We are pleased to publish our updated annual list of members below. Welcome, Carol Clarke, the newest member to the society. Temple Shalom Legacy Society honors those who have demonstrated the foresight to plan a future gift to Temple Shalom. By signing a non-binding Letter of Intent to make a gift in the future, you will become a member of our Legacy Society. How does a planned gift work? One major benefit of a planned gift is that it allows you to hold on to your money and other assets during your lifetime, so you can rest assured that you can meet your and your family’s future financial needs, while leaving a legacy that will benefit the Temple far into the future. As a result, a planned gift may allow you to support the Temple at a higher level than you think possible. A planned gift sets a wonderful example for your children and grandchildren to show how much you care about the future of Temple Shalom, and want our temple to have a lasting role in your family’s future for generations to come. A planned gift does not have to be large, but can be of any size. Contact me at Executive Director, Deborah Fidel or Development Coordinator, Shayna Aronson, to get a copy of the Letter of Intent and answer any questions you may have about planned giving. We are dedicated to helping every donor find the right opportunity to create a legacy meaningful to you.
