Adam Miller “Im Kol Yeled Ha-Olam Mitchadesh – With Each Child the World Begins Anew…” -- Midrash
Five years ago, I shared this text as a celebration of Eli’s arrival into our family and the world. I am not sure where the last five years have gone! In what feels like the blink of an eye, our youngest is now about to begin Kindergarten, having finished his tenure in the loving environment of the Temple Shalom Preschool. His irrepressible smile, joyful laughter, loving hugs, and boundless energy characterize how far he has come since entering the world as a cherubic faced baby. A few days before Eli’s 5th birthday, Jennifer and I traveled to New York for a wedding with special meaning. Alex, the groom, was a former bar mitzvah student from my first congregation. This was a first for me – officiating at the wedding of a former bar mitzvah student. Standing beneath the chuppah with Alex and his bride, I could not help but feel awed at the young man he had grown into – mature, confident, and so fully embracing of his Jewish identity that they regularly attend a synagogue in Manhattan. Again, I had to wonder, where have the years gone! During that same trip, we stayed with close friends who live in New York City. When we first met their youngest son, Lev, he was only six and a companion to Jonah and Gabriel. A rising sophomore in high school, his mom shared that he adapted quickly to big city life after they moved from the suburbs two years ago. Lev now commutes daily for an hour every morning on the subway to his high school in Brooklyn! Even after having lived in the city, it is hard to imagine the little boy I once knew now navigating the transportation hubs of New York City. Each one of these children represents a new start, a new glimmer of hope in the world. I look at Eli and know it will be difficult to not have him in the same building next year. I felt the same when Jonah and Gabriel were at that same age. Alex and Lev demonstrate that as much as we want to shelter, guide, and protect them, at some point all children go out into the world. wrote, “All parents borrow their children. Our children are not our own; our children belong to God…They are not ours to keep, but to rear. They are not given to us to mold into our image. They are not given to us that we can force them to fulfill our lives, and thus in some way, cancel our failures. They are not tools to be used, but souls to be loved.” All we can do is love our children and grandchildren, and instill in them the values we hope will enable them to make wise decisions. They will then make the choices that will renew the world, and set the course for our future. May all the dreams of today’s youth bring us a brighter tomorrow. L’shalom, Rabbi Adam F. Miller

Donna Azu Let Us Join Together In Song! As I enjoy the last few days of summer and a slower pace of life, I also start to think about the fall, the upcoming holidays and all the preparation that starts to take place. The High Holy Days choir is one of the highlights of our services and adds so much to our prayer experience. The choir will begin rehearsing at the end of August and, as always, we would love to welcome some new singers. The choir will sing on Erev Rosh Hashanah, Rosh Hashanah morning, Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur. Singing in the High Holy Days choir is a great way of deepening your appreciation of the liturgy, and it’s also a great way to make some new friends! No previous choral experience is required and you don’t have to be able to read music (although you will learn a little bit!), you just need the desire to sing and learn. If you would like to sing with the choir this year, please let me know soon. You can contact me via email at dazu@naplestemple.org or call me at (239) 455-3030. I look forward to hearing from you! PRESCHOOL DIRECTOR
Seyla Cohen The children had a blast playing, learning, singing, dancing and making new friends at Camp Shalom & Camp Einstein. From water park fun to storyland and science activities the children spent their hot and rainy summer days enjoying themselves. Once again, thanks to the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples, we had an outstanding visit and performance from the Israel Scouts on June 20th. The campers were so excited to mingle and learn from these talented boys and girls. The show was amazing and very entertaining for the children, teachers and parents. It was a real treat for Camp Shalom and Camp Einstein to see the scouts in action! Along with an amazing summer camp, preparations for the 2018-2019 school year are being made. We are proud to say that we are opening a fourth Cubs class (2 years old) and an additional Tuesday/Thursday class for our 2 year old children this year. The demand for our outstanding preschool is sensational! Come, visit, volunteer and be a part of this amazing place we call home away from home! As this issue of The Voice hits your mailbox, I will be finishing up a week as visiting faculty at URJ 6 Points Creative Arts Academy summer camp outside of Philadelphia. The opportunity to be on faculty for the inaugural summer was irresistible. Jewish overnight camps provide an immersive experience that is simply unlike any other. Meeting friends from around the country, living on Jewish time in a Jewish space, all while experiencing new things and familiar favorites makes camp a unique and incredible place. Stop by and hear all about this wonderful new camp – I’d love to share it with you!

H istor ically Speaking by Helen Weinfeld, Temple Shalom Historian There is a room in the Temple that most members have never seen. It is reached from a corridor between the sanctuary and the chapel. It contains collections that outline the history of Temple Shalom, originally called the Jewish Community Center of Collier County. Among them are all the monthly issues of The Voice, which was originally called The Newsletter, from 1979 until 2006 when The Voice started being archived on the Temple computer. Another collection includes the first Naples’ issue of the Federation Star in September, 1991 while it was still the Allied Jewish Association of Collier County. Craig Frankel, its Executive Director, was an active member of Temple Shalom. By the September, 1992 issue, Vol. 2 No.1, it was the Jewish Federation of Collier County. Federation Star issues were of interest as long as Temple Shalom was the only Jewish congregation in Naples, because most of the active Federation members were also active members of Temple Shalom, and the Star reported on activities at the Temple.
Temple Shalom’s rabbi, Seth Phillips, reported that the new Temple Shalom building would not be ready by the High Holy days. He stated the following: “The new temple is a sign that our pioneers did not labor in vain to establish a Jewish presence in Naples. Having outgrown the physical space at 1575 Pine Ridge Road, we have as well outgrown the “sha, sha, still, still” attitude. We are no longer the ”little Jewish church” (sic) overshadowed by much larger neighbors. Thanks are due those who from the mid 60’s onward stood tall as Jews and worked for equality and visibility.” The effort to preserve the history of Temple Shalom is called the “Historical Society.” If you would like to be part of it, please contact me at helenweinfeld@aol.com . Thank you.
In the first issue, dated September, 1991, Sandy Stone, Sisterhood President, reported that new Temple Shalom members get the first year’s Sisterhood membership free, that Sisterhood dues

Over the course of the past year, members of Temple Shalom and the Greater Naples community came together to bead necklaces for the children of the Guadalupe Center in Immokalee to give to their mothers and grandmothers as gifts. This is an ongoing project headed up by Carol Hirsch. The next beading event will take place at Temple Shalom on Wednesday, August 22nd at 1:00pm. There is a minimal cost of $18 unless you bring your own materials. Please contact Carol directly at chirsch1951@gmail.com to register and for more information. It’s a wonderful, fun opportunity to do a mitzvah!
“A picture is worth a thousand words” - how true! What a wonderful mitzvah that the ladies of Temple Shalom were able to provide to these adorable children. I am sure that their mothers loved their beautiful beaded necklaces. What joy was brought into their lives on Mother’s Day! Fond regards, Helene Naimon

Temple Shalom Supports Congregation Hatikvah in Kyiv, Ukraine A decade ago, a long-time friend of a member of our congregation, Judi Palay, was in Kyiv, Ukraine during the High Holy Days. He had become friendly with Rabbi Alex Dukhovny through prior contacts. Dukhovny, the chief Progressive (Reform) Rabbi in that city was the only Progressive rabbi in Ukraine. After services he shared a meal with the congregation. Here are his words: “I had my own interpreter, a young woman perhaps 10 years of age who had been learning English in school. She shared that this meal at the synagogue was special for her not only because of the holiday we were celebrating, but because it would be her only hot meal, her only full meal, of the weekend. “You see,” she told me, “my father needs medicine to stay alive, and therefore there is not enough money for more than cereal and bread at our house.” From this first contact, the relationship with the rabbi and

his synagogue has grown over the years. Judi Palay and Paul Rosofsky established a fund“Do Not Forget Us” here at Temple Shalom. Amazingly, there are now 36 congregations in Ukraine. While we are pleased with the progress we’ve made, there are urgent needs at Congregation Hatikvah. Judi Palay attended the Tikkun Olam Council (TOC) in June to update us. Currency has been devalued, security is a crisis issue and the need for food remains at the top of the list. Specifically, $1,200 provides a hot meal each weekend day for the children in this congregation (and some to take home) for one year. If we choose to help, our share would be $100 a month. We can feed more than 50 children each weekend. The TOC was asked to coordinate the support from Temple Shalom. We are pleased to announce that $1,200 will be provided from the Thalenfeld Social Action Fund. In addition, personal checks were sent to Temple Shalom earmarked for Do Not Forget Us. “Many of us have family that came from this area. What does our Haggadah say- “Let all who are hungry come and eat.” Isn’t that living Judaism?” That is the promise made when Judi’s family left Ukraine-that we would not forget them. As we approach the High Holy Days, we hope you will think of this congregation in Ukraine and help them by sending a check in any amount to Temple Shalom and specify Do Not Forget Us. Shana Tova.
Do Not Forget Us We have been invited to join several other FL communities in helping Rabbi Dukhovny’s Jewish community in Ukraine. Many of our students here in Collier need to take advantage of the backpack program to have food for the weekend. Rabbi Dukhovny discovered that many of his young students had little or nothing to eat over the weekend as well. He hired a cook and arranged for the children to come to their school for a hot meal both Saturday and Sunday. Remember, think cold weather and little house heat. If we choose to help, our share would be $300 for a quarter of the year. For $100 a month, we can feed more than 50 children each weekend. Rather than just sending money for use as needed, we can fill a very important need. How could we say no? If you wish to participate, please send a check to Temple Shalom and mark in the memo DNFU. This would truly be a mitzvah. Thank you, Judi Palay and Paul Rosofsky Co-chairs

High Holy Days Ticket Policy When will High Holy Day tickets be mailed? Members in good standing (see below) should expect to receive their High Holy Day tickets by September 1. Who will automatically receive High Holy Day tickets? Temple Shalom members in good standing. Good standing means that there is no outstanding financial obligation to the Temple. Also, congregants must either have submitted their L’Shalom pledge payment plan or have contributed at least 25% of their 2018-2019 L’Shalom pledge by August 24. Other arrangements must be made by calling the Temple Shalom office. Who else may receive tickets? You may request complimentary tickets for immediate members of your family (parents, grandparents, siblings, children who are visiting from out of town), military personnel and college students (with ID), and visitors who are members of other Reform congregations (a reciprocity form must be sent from their home congregation to Temple Shalom). Can others not included in the above groups purchase tickets? Yes, however, seating is limited. Advanced planning is necessary.
Join in as we rejoice in the beginning and ending of the Torah reading cycle See the entire Torah unrolled around the sanctuary! Consecration of Kindergarten and new Religious School students
When available, what is the cost of a ticket to High Holy Day services? $100 is the cost for one ticket to all High Holy Day services. Can I apply the amount I pay for tickets towards a membership at Temple Shalom? Yes, we encourage you to do just that! The credit will be applied to membership if you join Temple Shalom by November 30, 2018. In fact, rather than purchase tickets, we encourage you to make a L’Shalom pledge to Temple Shalom, which may be fulfilled throughout the year, and join Temple Shalom’s family! Your tickets are then included with your pledge. If I know of someone who cannot afford the High Holy Day tickets, can they still attend? Yes, provided they contact the Temple Shalom office in advance of the High Holy Days and we have available seating. It will be our pleasure to have them worship with us.
Memorial Service Harry Chapin Food Bank of SWFL Envelopes will be available on Rosh Hashanah. Please make your donation using these envelopes and return them to Temple Shalom on Yom Kippur. 16

Suzanne Low, J.D., CFP®, Endowment Chair
Can I make an endowment gift of my home or other real estate? All types of real estate make excellent charitable gifts. Your current home, business or investment property, vacation home or vacant land can be used to fund an endowment gift. Often a gift of real estate is the largest asset a donor can give. You receive an immediate tax deduction for the full appraised value and avoid capital gains taxes if you’ve held the property for more than 12 months. The Temple gets the full value of the property, since charities don’t pay capital gains taxes. Here’s an example of how one couple made a gift of property they no longer needed. Jack and Betty Katzen, now in their eighties, had a lifetime of memories tied up in their second home, a small lakefront cottage on 2 acres of land in upstate New York. They bought it for $20,000 in 1963 and used it for summer vacations and weekend retreats for many years. It also appreciated hugely through the decades. But when the upkeep became too much and they no longer used it regularly, they decided it was time to divest. With no children and only one niece who wasn’t interested in taking it over, they decided to give it to their Temple. Selling the property, now worth $350,000, would mean a sizeable capital gains tax and they wanted to make an long-term impact in the life of their Temple, so decided to earmark the gift for the Temple endowment fund.
