us, “One should not separate oneself from the community.” By participating in the free democratic elections of our country and exercising our right to vote, we affirm our role in the community and our responsibility to choose our leaders.

In addition to the major national election in November, the first key election takes place on Tuesday, August 30, 2016. Included on that date are the elections for the Collier County School Board. This year the issue of prayer and use of scripture in school has been raised by candidates for the school board. The Reform Jewish Movement has long opposed school prayer as well as the teaching of religious scripture in the classroom.

and are keenly aware of the dangers of a partnership between government and religion. The separation of church and state is the cornerstone of American democracy, and as such is integral for protecting the religious freedom of all Americans.

The Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) has expressed its belief that “the principle of separation of church and state is best both for church and state and is indispensable for the preservation of that spirit of religious liberty which is a unique blessing of American democracy.” Rabbi David Saperstein, former executive director of the Religious Action Center for Reform Judaism, noted that “It is precisely this wall separating church and state which has allowed religion to flourish in America with a diversity and strength unmatched anywhere in the Western world.”

With such an important issue being discussed, we encourage you to learn where the candidates stand and vote on August 30th. The School Board election is one where you may cast votes for each of the open seats, regardless of which district you live in. Additionally, because each seat is down to only two candidates, this will be the only opportunity to vote.

We are each created uniquely in the image of God, and all of our voices matter in our egalitarian and democratic society. Let your voice be heard this year by casting your vote.

Our drive home from Naples to Baltimore was a “joyride” as we listened to “The Sound of Shalom,” Cantor Azu’s new CD. We were moved by the sensitive and creative arrangements of our liturgy, Sabbath prayers and other favorites.

Listening to our cantor is to be lifted to a perfect, spiritual sphere. We adore her sweet, sensitive voice. We also know that her voice reflects a talented and gracious young woman who is loved and respected by the Temple. She is accompanied by Peter Lewis, a graduate of the Eastman School of Music. His accompaniments complement and enhance the cantor’s renditions. As a fellow musician, I wanted to learn why and how she made the CD. Below are her responses.

Why did you make a CD? I would often be approached after services and asked if there was a CD of the music from our services. There wasn’t and I thought it would a be great opportunity for Temple Shalom to have a CD with many of the songs we love to sing at our services. Recording a CD is a costly project but thanks to Estelle and Stuart Price who financed the CD, my dream became reality!

How did you choose the songs? I chose songs that I often sing in services as well as a few of my personal favorites.

What are your favorite songs? Why? My favorite song on the CD is Modim Anachnu Lach by Jonathan Commissar. First, I love the melody. I think it’s beautiful and sounds like it could be from a contemporary musical. I also love the text. Modim Anachnu Lach expresses gratitude to God for the many blessings in our lives. Because it’s half Hebrew and half English, non-Hebrew speakers can connect to the text as well.

Where did you make the CD? I made the CD at The Vibe Recording studio in Fort Myers How did you work with Peter? Peter has previously accompanied me on all the songs on the CD so we only needed 1 rehearsal to go over the music.

How long did it take to finish? Peter and I were in the studio 2 times for approximately 4 hours each session. I also went into the studio an additional 2 times for about 3 hours each session for editing.

How did you do the harmony parts? The studio was able to have me record the harmony line separately and layer it over the melody line that I had previously recorded. It’s amazing what they can do!

What have people been saying about the CD? I’ve heard that people love listening to it and some have sent it to friends or relatives Who did the art work? I found the graphic online and my friend and former Temple Shalom employee, Jo Icaza added the color. I submitted everything to the recording studio and they packaged it all together for me.

Our Temple Board has a fiduciary responsibility to ensure that our Temple is solvent. As our dues do not cover the running of the building, we raise funds through Above and Beyond, Endowment and special events.

Congregants come together to donate funds for special projects, as well as Sisterhood and Men’s Club. A great example is the Tribute Garden that was created in the summer of 2015. We will have the dedication in the fall for the initial fundraising efforts as well as fundraising opportunities for further beautification. Another example was the purchase of the hearing loop.

In an effort to be transparent to the congregation, I would like to report Board actions from our June meeting, which reflect on our need to make sure that our Temple is inviting to all who visit, both on the inside and outside.

1. The Board approved a plan to refurbish the front entry landscaping. A landscaper was hired who designed the plan and will coordinate the installation.

2. The hearing loop was approved by the Board last year but, the installation was disrupted as it would require the replacement of the sanctuary carpet. The Board approved replacement of the sanctuary carpet. The existing carpet will be ripped out, the hearing loop installed and then new carpet will be put in place.

3. The Board approved an expenditure for a cell booster system as there is no cell tower in the area and Temple Shalom is a dead spot for many carriers. One receiver will be placed by the sanctuary and one by the Preschool. We will be testing this equipment and if it does not work to our satisfaction, we can return it. If land lines go down, it is important in an emergency situation to be able to have a way to communicate. Currently there are no plans by the county to install a cell tower in this area.

The Building, Grounds and Beautification Committee headed by Trustee Michael Diamond is hard at work looking at areas of the Temple that need attention. As a result of the work and dedication of the committee, the above items were approved. We invite congregants to assist us in bearing all or part of the cost of these improvement projects. Hear Ye! Hear Ye! The hearing loop is coming to our Temple Shalom sanctuary. If you use a hearing aid, check with your hearing aid provider. Is your hearing aid compatible with a hearing loop? If you are buying a hearing aid, talk with your provider about a T-switch. Having a T-switch will allow the loop to transmit sound from the microphone to your hearing aid, giving you the sound amplification designed for you.

There will be an orientation to introduce our members to the hearing loop. Please watch for more details.

Can you believe summer is already winding down? In just a few short weeks it’s back to school. In the education department, things are in full swing as we prepare for a busy year ahead!

We are excited to announce that we are one of 16 Reform congregations selected to participate in the new Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) Community of Practice (CoP) dedicated to Reimagining Congregational Education. This CoP is a congregational networking group for Reform congregations that are seeking to discover new ways to innovate and experiment in congregational education.

In our Religious School, we’re rolling out a new SUNDAY Hebrew option, giving families the flexibility to choose a Hebrew class schedule that meets their needs.

Our Confirmation program is brand new too. Journey allows teens to guide their education and create meaningful experiences both individually and as a community.

With Adult Education we’ve got a lot happening too! As the exclusive Naples provider of the Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning, we are proud to welcome our first cohort of the “Core” class that Melton is famous for. The “Core” class is a three year, fifteen weeks per year, commitment exploring four main areas: Rhythms of Jewish Living: What’s the point of living Jewishly? What ideas, beliefs, and practices are involved? Discover deeper meanings underlying Jewish holidays, lifecycle observances, and Jewish practice. Purposes of Jewish Living: Why do Jews believe as they do? What are big questions of life and how do Jewish thinkers answer these questions? Pursue answers to many major issues. Ethics of Jewish Living: How do Jewish teachings shed light on contemporary issues such as the environment, inter-personal relationships, end-of-life decisions, and stem-cell research? Explore multiple Jewish approaches to conducting our lives in communal and private spheres. Crossroads of Jewish History: Merge concepts of history and memory in order to better understand how each has shaped Judaism today.

The first cohort for our Core class is full and we are on a waitlist for cohort 2 to begin next year! If you’re interested, please let us know. I could not have a Bat Mitzvah when I was 13 because I was living in Jordan at the time. I’m happy to be sharing my Bat Mitzvah with my sister, Sasha. I plan on visiting Israel soon with my ultimate goal being to live there.

I am 14 and currently in 8th grade at Oakridge Middle School. My Bat Mitzvah is something I have been looking forward to for a long time. I love learning languages as well as doing crafts like sewing and crocheting. One of my mitzvot is to make quilts to donate to the infusion center in St. Pete.

Once again, thanks to the Jewish Federation of Collier County, we had an outstanding visit and performance from the Israeli Scouts on June 22nd.

The campers were so excited to mingle and learn from these talented boys and girls. The show was amazing and very entertaining for the children, the teachers and the parents. We also surprised the Scouts with some Israeli lunch we prepared with the Camp children. It was a real treat for Camp Shalom and Camp Einstein to see the Scouts in action!

Along with an amazing summer camp, preparations for the 2016-2017 school year are being made. We are proud to say that we are opening a fourth Lions (3 year old) class this year. The demand for our outstanding preschool is sensational!

Mazel Tov to Lorie Mayer!

Our member, Lorie Mayer, was recently honored with a Volunteer Award by the Points of Light national organization for her work as a curator at The Holocaust Museum & Education Center of SWFL. The award celebrates those who have made an important impact in their communities as well as in the world beyond. There will be an award ceremony at the Holocaust Museum at a later date.

“Lorie has been one of the most integral individuals at the museum,” says education specialist Samuel Parish, who nominated Lorie for a Daily Point of Light Award. “In some ways, she has been the embodiment of the museum.”

Ira & Barbara Kushnir Barbara, a retired middle school teacher, and Ira, a retired pediatric dentist, met in college at Washington University in St. Louis, MO and later moved to Dayton, Ohio where they raised their family and resided for 40 years. In 2012, the Kushnirs moved to Bonita Bay to be closer to friends and family and take advantage of the active lifestyle that is available in SW Florida. Together they enjoy walking, swimming and golf. Ira also enjoys biking, kayaking and volunteering as a guardian ad litem. Barbara is a part of the WCA book club and enjoys playing mahjongg.

Susan & Jack Rabin Susan and Jack come to us from Highwood, IL. The Rabins have lived in the Chicago area for 76 years. As a matter of fact, they grew up across the street from each other! Now they are the proud parents of two adult children, Robert and Laura, and four beautiful grandchildren, Daniel, Benjamin, Stephanie and Morgan. Living the Values of Tikkun Olam Opportunities to Volunteer

Health Care Forum

In our last newsletter we asked for more information about what volunteer activities our members are already doing. One email response caught our attention. It was from Sandy Broadman and we thought you’d enjoy reading what she wrote.

“Ira and I are involved in Temple Shalom’s One Family. We also volunteer 3 times a week at JFCS: on Tuesday we co-lead a group of early dementia/Alzheimer’s men and women; on Wednesdays we help to serve luncheon for 170-200 people; and on Friday morning we assist anyone who needs help on their iPhone or iPad. We also volunteer Monday mornings at the Parkinson’s Association office. Sometimes I teach the speech class at Parkinson’s on Thursday mornings. I also volunteer at the Rock Steady Boxing program at Fyzical in Ft Myers on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and Saturday mornings.”

Our first thought was, “Thank you Ira and Sandy. You are both living the values of Tikkun Olam.” Their dedication to social action has already inspired one of our members to apply at JFCS as a volunteer. We are also continuing to volunteer at the Harry Chapin Food Bank in Naples. We’re looking to have at least one day a month for Temple Shalom members to work at the warehouse. We’ve chosen the last Friday of each month from 12:00 to 3:00 PM however, you can volunteer at any time that is convenient for you. For more information go to www.harrychapinfoodbank.org. On September 7, there will be a forum dealing with access to health care. We want to make sure we all understand Jewish values regarding health care and we will question whether we are meeting those values as a community and a nation. If not, what are some common sense solutions for access to health care. The date is Wednesday, September 7th at Temple Shalom from 4:30 PM to no later than 6:00 PM. We will have three expert panelists, including Dr. Allen Weiss, President and CEO of the NCH Healthcare System. It will be moderated by Jaclynn Faffer. Jackie is the CEO of JFCS of Southwest Florida. You won’t want to miss this exciting and informative forum.

Summer is almost over but there are many ways to get involved. All of us can practice Tikkun Olam, which means “to repair the world.” For more information about the Tikkun Olam Council, please contact Ken Goldstein at kengoldstein@mac.com.

High Holy Days Ticket Policy Who receives complimentary tickets by mail?

Temple Shalom members in good standing.* Who else can receive complimentary tickets?

If you have never attended High Holy Day services with us, we will be happy to welcome you as our guest, with complimentary tickets. Others who may receive compimentary tickets are: Immediate family of Temple members (Parents, grandparents, siblings, children who are visiting from out of town), Military personnel and college students (with ID),Visitors who are members of other Reform congregations (Advanced arrangements having been made between their URJ member congregation and Temple Shalom) I am a Temple Shalom member and I’m not going to use my ticket, can I give it to someone else?

No. Tickets are personalized and are non-transferable.

This is to be fair to our committed membership and also for security reasons. We must be aware of each and every person in the Temple during the High Holy Days.

Can tickets be purchased for Holy Day services?

Yes, however, seating is limited, so advanced planning is recommended.

What is the cost of a High Holy Day service ticket? $100. This is for one person and includes all the High Holy Day services. Can I apply the ticket price as a credit towards membership?

Yes, we encourage you to do just that! It gives you an opportunity to worship with us before you decide if Temple Shalom is right for you. This credit will be applied to membership provided you join the Temple

by November 30, 2016.

If I can’t afford, or I know of someone who can’t afford the ticket price, can I/we still come to services?

Yes, provided you contact us in advance and give us the opportunity to help you. In all cases of special need, we welcome you and will expect you to pay only what you can afford for a ticket and/or for membership. It will be our pleasure to have you worship with us. *Additional Information…

Definition of GOOD STANDING: “Good standing” means that there are no outstanding financial obligations to the Temple. Also, 25% of the 2016-2017 dues needs to be paid by August 26, and any prior year dues balance needs to be brought current.

URJ RECIPROCITY FORM: If you are a member of Temple Shalom and plan to worship elsewhere, please call the Temple office and we will help you with reciprocal seating arrangements.

Temple Shalom chosen for select group of North American congregationsreimagining congregational education Temple Shalom is one of 16 Reform congregations in North America selected to participate in the newly formed Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) Community of Practice dedicated to Reimagining Congregational Education. This URJ Community of Practice (CoP) is a congregational networking group for Reform congregations that are seeking to discover new ways to innovate and experiment in congregational education.

By participating in this initiative, Temple Shalom will have the opportunity to meet with leaders from congregations with common interests to share ideas and experiment together with new strategies.

Temple Shalom will also have access to the URJ’s professional staff and expert consultants, some of the most renowned thought leaders in their fields.

“Across North America, people hunger for real connections. They want – they need – to be part of meaningful communities,” said URJ President Rabbi Rick Jacobs. “The URJ communities of practice will give Reform congregations opportunities to work together, take risks, explore new ideas, innovate and have unprecedented access to top experts.”

Community of Practice will work together formally for 18 months to push the boundaries of existing congregational efforts. Participating congregations will receive guidance from peers and advisors to experiment in their own communities, create congregational innovations, and garner skills that will benefit all areas of congregational life.

This Community of Practice is a joint effort between the Association of Reform Jewish Educators (ARJE) and the URJ. There will be monthly virtual gatherings and e-learning opportunities. In addition, congregations will receive coaching, support, and consultation to support the planning and implementation of educational experiments. Results of these strategic experiments will be shared with congregations outside the Community of Practice and with the Reform Movement at large.

“URJ’s Communities of Practice (CoP) inspire congregations to build the skills to experiment and innovate in areas of congregational life that are important to them. We connect congregational leaders to each other as well as to experts, valuable resources, and learning opportunities. The cohort model allows congregations to engage with a group to experiment, lowering the risk and sharing learning,” said Amy Asin, URJ Vice President of Strengthening Congregations. “From the work of previous CoP cohorts, we know that the support available in belonging to a committed group focused on areas of interest encourages congregations to delve more deeply into their work and creates a longer term commitment to build the skills for experimentation. The participants engaged in this sacred work will grapple with challenges and celebrate successes across the network. We also look forward to sharing what they learn and do with all URJ congregations.”

Endowment Corner

by Bruce Graev, CFP®, Endowment Committee member Life insurance can be an excellent tool for charitable giving, and giving to an endowment in particular. Not only does life insurance allow you to make a substantial gift to Temple Shalom endowments at relatively little cost to you but, with changes in estate taxes, the policy you own or are the beneficiary of may not be needed anymore. In addition, you may also benefit from tax rules that apply to gifts of life insurance.

Here is a real life example: Jeff and Susan are a couple in their mid-fifties. They are both employed and plan on working until their early sixties and have accumulated significant assets on their own.

Susan’s dad is a retired attorney. He and his wife have a $1million life insurance policy that was purchased when the estate tax exemption was $675,000. The insurance policy would pay $1million to Susan upon their death and was designed to pay the expected estate taxes. Because of the current estate tax exemption, portability (ability to add the husband’s and wife’s exemptions together) and cost of living indexing, there would currently be no estate tax on the first $10.9 million of the estate. Because Susan’s parent’s estate is approximately $5 million, there would no longer be any estate tax due.

Therefore, the insurance policy is no longer needed for the original purpose of paying the estate tax. However, after paying premiums on the insurance for almost 20 years, the policy has a cash value of $372,000. With the considerable cash value of the policy, Susan’s parents no longer need to make out-of-pocket premium payments, because the cash value will generate enough income on the policy to pay the premiums.

Susan and her parents have a few choices:

• Leave the policy as is, in which case, when Susan’s parents pass away she will receive the $1 million death benefit.

• Borrow a portion of the cash value and use it for anything they want to (leaving enough in the policy to continue to pay

the premiums).

• Gift the policy to a charity of their choice. When they pass away the charity will receive the $1 million death benefit and Susan’s parents can take a tax deduction today (approximately equal to the policy’s current cash value of $372,000) which they can use to reduce their income taxes over the next five years.

• Or any combination of the three alternatives above.

They chose to borrow $75,000 from the cash value of the policy and gift it to their favorite non-profit. When this was done, the insurance pol-

icy still named Susan as beneficiary of the $1million policy, the charity received $75,000 immediately and Susan’s parents received a tax deduction for approximately $75,000 to use to reduce their taxable income over the next five years.

Endowment Fund: Donations help to secure the future, enrich the programs and provide for emergency needs of the congregation.

Religious School Enrichment Fund: Donations augment the Religious School budget to enrich the education of our children.

Scholar In Residence Endowment Fund: Supports the endowment established by Shirley and Henry Kraus. This fund enables Temple Shalom to bring visiting scholars to the Temple as an educational benefit to the membership.

Polster Religious School Scholarship Fund: To supplement Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Ben Calmenson Fund: Donations will be used to create sponsorships to send children to attend Camp Coleman.
