The Times, They Are A-changing Today’s high-tech is tomorrow’s paperweight. It is hard to believe that there was a time when we did not all have a phone in our pocket – when friends had to pre-arrange meeting places BEFORE leaving the house. Now we see new phones, watches, and tablets on the market every few weeks.

Despite the avalanche of technology, there are those who remain stalwart in their refusal to switch technology. One such person I know carried around his phone ten years after it was last sold in retail – calling it a “Flintstone Cell” and a “Dumb-Phone.” He argued that it did everything he needed – it made and received phone calls. No calendar, camera, or other fancy Rabbi features. Imagine my surprise when at our last meeting, he pulled out an iPhone 6! When I asked Adam Miller why the shift, he responded, “I had no choice. The cell towers I have been using are being retired.

If I want to stay connected, it was time to make a change.”

The Greek philosopher Heraclitus taught, “The only thing that is constant is change.” Heraclitus may be correct, yet we often find ourselves resisting the pull of change. It is in our nature to feel a sense of security from those things that are routine and familiar. Anticipated change generates more stress – as we have time to think ahead and wonder what the future will be like.

This New Year at Temple Shalom greets us with two significant and anticipated changes. First, it has been almost a year since Caren Plotkin announced her retirement. Having celebrated Caren’s accomplishments from her seventeen year tenure, we now welcome Dr. Anna Solomon, our new Director of Congregational Education. The second change will be apparent at this year’s High Holy Day services. We will not see the familiar maroon Gates of Repentance Prayerbooks, which have been “retired” by the Union for Reform Judaism, and are now out-of-print. Instead we will have the silver and gold of Mishkan HaNefesh, formatted like our Mishkan Tefilla.

Change may be the only constant, yet we still control how we respond. Like my colleague, we can choose to accept change or struggle. As we embrace the change in our calendars from 5775 to 5776, join me in warmly embracing the new changes at Temple Shalom as well as the blessings they bring. Anna is a gifted educator, whose new perspective offers a host of different ideas for our Religious School and Adult Education programs. Students, parents, and members of all ages will enjoy their interactions with her as they build new relationships and strengthen their Jewish identities.

Mishkan HaNefesh means an end to the mismatched prayerbooks that often had neighbors reciting different words for the same prayer. Its easy to use format, and spiritual readings will add new depth to our worship experience this year.

Copies will be on display in the main lobby for you to see in advance of the High Holy Days, and dedications can still be made for new books through the Temple office.

The year ahead promises to be full of more blessings, as we embrace the change around us. May your summer end with laughter, joy and love.

I remember the first moments that I sat in the sanctuary at Temple Israel, in Long Beach, CA and heard my cantor sing the majestic Avinu Malkeinu of Max Janowski for the first time.

With the organ and the choir joining him, I felt the emotion well up inside of me as I realized the impact that this incredible music had on me. I had those same feelings the first time I sang Kol Nidre as a Student Cantor, and of course Max Helfman’s Shema Koleinu for the first time as your Cantor.

I still feel the emotion of the music of the High Holy Days each and every time I put on my white robe and stand before you to intone the majestic and powerful music of the Days of Awe. It is why I am so excited to share with you the new powerful and emotional music of the Reform movement, helping to bring to life the beautiful poetry in our new machzor.

The American Conference of Cantors, in partnership with CCAR Press, is proud to present this book of new compositions for High Holy Day worship. This book brings musical life to many of the magical new texts found in Mishkan HaNefesh while also bringing musical voice to other traditional texts found in the machzor. All of us have our favorite melodies for Avinu Malkeynu, or Un’taneh Tokef….I know that I do. However, the music contained in Shirei Mishkan HaNefesh provides beautiful alternatives and an opportunity to introduce new musical memories to our communities. Like the new machzor, Mishkan HaNefesh, the music contained in this volume underscores the central value of Teshuvah, accompanying our journey during the Days of Awe, as together we seek repentance, new direction, and a sense of return to God and the Jewish people.

While I would never try to replace the melodies that are part of my life and my inner soul, I look forward to gradually adding some of these new and exciting melodies to our services, enriching the musical life of the Jewish people for decades to come. I look forward to sharing some of these new melodies with you and hope you will as well!

ONE FAMILY SUMMER REPORT Our One Family initiative is very active this summer. Our projects, designed to provide an environment and systems that enable our members to connect with one another, continue to develop and carry out our mission. While engaging in this process we have had an opportunity to learn about programs that are needed at Temple Shalom. These programs, related to the work of our One Family Team, require additional leadership. Bobbie Katz will be leading this effort as our Temple Program Coordinator. Two areas of programming have already surfaced – the need for programming for singles and additional ongoing social action efforts. Watch for more information from Bobbie in upcoming issues of the Voice.

Our One Family projects continue to evolve as we experience them and develop new ideas: One Family…Many Stories has been launched! This project involves one-to-one 30-minute meetings of Conversation Leaders and randomly selected Temple members, learning about our members stories – their Jewish journeys, interests, passions, concerns, and expectations. Our first group of Conversation Leaders have met for a “training” session, scheduled conversation times, and met with members. The information gleaned from these conversations will be helpful in planning future programs and developing Affinity Groups. Volunteers welcome – Please let us know if you would like to participate in these conversations, either as a Conversation Leader or to share your story with us (or both!). Streaming Video will soon begin at Temple Shalom. Services, activities, and events in the sanctuary will be available, live, as a link on our website (www.naplestemple.org). In addition, all of the productions will be archived, enabling members to view the events from where ever they are and whenever they want. This streaming video will provide our members with a connection to Temple Shalom when they are away from the Naples area or are otherwise unable to attend in person. iTemple, our Temple Shalom on-line community, will be launched in the months to come. This social networking service, now being implemented in phases by our Temple leaders, will be managed and controlled by the members.

Members will create profiles, identify interests, develop groups and relationships, and communicate, enhancing their ability to connect and engage with one another virtually. Lists of members who want to participate in this project will be provided. Those who have held or attended one of these dinners have reported having a great experience and developing new relationships with Temple members they might not have otherwise met.

Affinity Groups – This project has two promising new sources for helping our members connect with others who share common interests. First, our new One Family…Many Stories project (see above) will begin to identify the interests of our members. Second, our iTemple on-line community (see above), will provide our members with a venue to enter their own interests and to learn who else in the congregation shares their interests. As these two processes are developed, the identification of affinity groups sought by our members will emerge. More information to follow in future issues of The Voice. Our Name Badges are in the beautiful cabinet (photo in the November issue of The Voice) in our Temple lobby and have been in use for nearly a year thanks to Stephanie and Neil Heuer. Be sure to find your badge when you enter the building and to replace it in the cabinet as you are leaving. These name badges are helping us to learn the names of other members, to integrate new members, and to identify our guests.

Our new connection-friendly Perman Library arrangement (pictured on the front page of the May issue of The Voice) is in place and in use, thanks to Claudia and Larry Baer and Baer Furniture. The Library is not only the home of our lending library, but the location of the Temple Bean (our coffee station) as well. Stop in, see how beautifully designed and decorated this space is as you meet with other members, browse the book collection, and enjoy a cup of coffee.

Ambassadors – This group of volunteers has participated in several events at Temple Shalom as well as Shabbat services over the past year. We are looking for more individuals or couples to serve as greeters and ushers. In addition, with the High Holy Days approaching, more opportunities for participation will arise. Techie Tutors – Providing opportunities for non-techie adults to meet with Temple teens who are technologically savvy.

This intergenerational activity builds relationships in a small group setting or on a one-to-one basis. Dr. Anna Salomon,

Director of Congregational Education Education is my passion, both personally and professionally.

Growing up in an interfaith family, I didn’t realize my family was Jewish at all until I was 17. That is when I began my personal exploration in Judaism and found that it resonated deeply.

At that point, I decided to immerse myself in serious Jewish learning. Given that I did not grow up with it, I felt disconnected and ‘behind’ – so I pursued collegiate level learning. At the same time, I knew I wanted to be working in education. Then I discovered the two could go together.

I began my career in Jewish education teaching first grade religious school.

On the credentials side, I obtained multiple degrees.

For my undergraduate studies, I have an AA in Early Childhood Education and a BA in Early Childhood Studies. Graduate studies include my MA in Jewish Studies with a certificate in Jewish Non-Profit Management from Gratz College, my MAT in Elementary Education with professional level teaching certification from Brandeis where I participated in the DeLeT program specifically aimed to increase the teaching credentials of Jewish Day School teachers, and my Ed.D. in Education Leadership from Northeastern University with a specialization certificate in Jewish Education Leadership from Hebrew College. In January, I also received my Reform Jewish Educator (RJE) credential from the URJRJE Title Granting Commission.

I have had the opportunity to work in many different aspects of Jewish education, from day camps and after school programming at the JCC, to day school teaching and leadership and synagogue education for all ages. For the past two years, I have been working in a position as the Director of Lifelong Learning and Engagement. In that capacity, I worked to strengthen the educational offerings for all ages – ensuring that there was something of quality for everyone, wherever they were in their learning.

My husband, Peter, and I have three sons. Andre (Andy) is 16, Joshua is 12, and Adin is 8. We are so excited to join the Temple Shalom family. After Peter’s (former) job transferred us around for so many years, we were looking for our community – the right place to settle down, both personally and professionally. Peter is now a writer (young adult horror novels!) and so we had a great opportunity to choose where we want to be. Temple Shalom is such a welcoming, open place that I knew right

away it is what we have been looking for.

With Caren’s retirement, I know there are big shoes to fill. The legacy she leaves is strong and one Temple Shalom can be proud of. I am asking for your help. I want to hear your thoughts, ideas, and dreams. Whether it’s for things that you’d like to see grow, or things you think are amazing and I should be aware of – I want to hear it.

As I begin my work at Temple Shalom, I will be calling many of you, asking to connect. It will take time, so if you don’t hear from me (or hear from me as soon as you’d like!), I hope you’ll pick up the phone or stop by. Please know that my door is always open. I invite each and every one of you - whether you’re a religious school parent or someone interested in adult education (or both!) - to join me for a cup of coffee and share your thoughts. Your partnership is not only needed, it’s wanted and valued. I look forward to working with all of you!

Preschool Director On June 8th fabulous summer fun officially began at both Camp Shalom and Camp Einstein. Camp Shalom is a fun-filled 7 week summer camp program for children ages two through five and Camp Einstein is an outstanding academic camp for children five through eight years old. Both programs have been developed with children’s needs and interests in mind, offering a welcoming place for little ones to come and enjoy the hot Naples summer. There’s something to peak everyone’s interest. Returning campers look forward to exciting experiences and new campers were surprised by the treat in store for them. Each camp offers a seven week program with a new theme each week.

Once again, thanks to the Jewish Federation of Collier County, we had an outstanding visit from the Israeli Scouts on June 10th. The campers were so excited to mingle and learn from these talented boys and girls. It was a real treat for Camp Shalom and Camp Einstein to see the scouts in action!

Along with an amazing summer camp, preparations for the 2015-2016 school year are being made. We are proud to say that we are opening a fourth Pre-K 4 class this year. The demand for our outstanding preschool is sensational!

About High Holy Day Tickets....

Who receives complimentary tickets by mail?

Temple Shalom members in good standing.* Who else can receive complimentary tickets?

Immediate family of Temple members (Parents, grandparents, siblings, children who are visiting from out of town) Military personnel and college students (with ID) Visitors who are members of other Reform congregations (Advanced arrangements having been made between their URJ member congregation and Temple Shalom) I am a Temple Shalom member and I’m not going to use my ticket, can I give it to someone else?

No. Tickets are personalized and are non-transferable.

This is to be fair to our committed membership and also for security reasons. We must be aware of each and every person in the Temple during the Holy Days.

Can tickets be purchased for Holy Day Services?

Yes, however, seating is limited, so advanced planning is recommended.

What is the cost of a High Holy Day Service ticket? $100.00. This is for one person and includes all the Holy Day Services. If you have never attended High Holy Day Services with us, we will be happy to welcome you as our guest, with complimentary tickets.

Can I apply the ticket price as a credit towards membership?

Yes, we encourage you to do just that! It gives you an opportunity to worship with us for a few months before you decide if Temple Shalom is right for you. This credit will be applied to membership provided you join the Temple

by October 31, 2015.

If I can’t afford, or I know of someone who can’t afford the ticket price, can I still come to services?

Yes, provided you contact us in advance, and give us the opportunity to help you. In all cases of special need, we welcome you and will expect you to pay only what you can afford for a ticket and/or for membership. It will be our pleasure to have you worship with us.

Rhonda is originally from Columbus, OH and Steve originally hails from Philadelphia. They have two daughters, Michelle and Danielle. Both Rhonda and Steve are retired. They are teachers by degree but before their retirement they had moved into careers in business. Steve is currently the president of the MCA and the co-chair of the Israel Affairs Committee. He loves tennis and has assimilated well to Naples. Rhonda is actively involved in playing tennis, mah jong and canasta. She spends time volunteering and promoting a children’s book called “Carrots for Charlie.”

Peter & Anna Salomon Peter is originally from Dover , NJ and Anna is originally from Beavercreek, OH. Peter & Anna come to us from St Petersburg, FL. They have 3 boys; Andy, Josh and Adin. Peter is an author of young adult fiction most notably Henry Franks and All Those Broken Angels. Anna is Temple Shalom’s new Director of Congregational Education. They both enjoy outdoor activities such as swimming, visiting parks and taking in baseball games as well as bowling, skating and cooking.

Showing We Care

Contributions made to the various Temple Shalom funds are wonderful ways to show your appreciation of family and friends, to celebrate happy occasions and to honor the memories of loved ones. We suggest a minimum donation of chai ($18.00). With a minimum donation of $18.00, a notice of your gifts will be sent to the honoree and mention will be published monthly in The Voice.

Operations

General Fund: Donations used for operating expenses.

Tree of Life: Each ‘Rock’ and ‘Star of David’ is a donation of $540.00; each ‘Leaf ’ is $240.00. The contribution must be received in its entirety before engraving is ordered.

Burn The Mortgage Fund: Established by Gerry and Pearl Sugarman to reduce payment of any existing mortgage.

Worship

Memorial Fund: Donations made in honor of a loved one who has passed.

William Freschel Kiddush Fund: All donations help provide Kiddush Lunch each Saturday following worship services.

A $150 donation is considered to be a sponsorship to honor a special someone or occasion.

Flower Fund: Provides Bimah flowers each Shabbat. A $150.00 donation is considered to be a sponsorship in memory or in honor of a special someone or occasion.

Mitzvah Baskets: A $100.00 donation will purchase several hundred dollars of food for JFCS.

Religious School: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for Jewish learning in both Sunday and Hebrew Schools.

Religious School Enrichment Fund: Donations augment the Religious School budget to enrich the education of our children.

Polster Religious School Scholarship Fund: To purchase or supplement Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Ben Calmenson Fund: Donations will be used to create sponsorships to send children to attend Camp Coleman.

Rabbi Abraham Shusterman Children's Center Memorial Fund: To support our Religious School and Preschool.

Sisterhood Religious School Scholarship Fund: To provide Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Joseph S. Weinfeld Faculty Development Fund: Donations support both curriculum and teaching skill enrichment activities for Sunday and Hebrew School teachers.

Youth Activities Fund: Donations provide financial support for children of our congregation to attend Camp Coleman, to take part in regional/national youth conventions, and to experience a summer in Israel.

Preschool

Preschool Fund: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for the Preschool.

Preschool Enrichment Fund: The enhancement of curriculum, educational programs and experiences.

Arby Lipman Children's Library: Children and adolescent books and magazine subscriptions, and supplies are purchased.

Jack and Charlotte Ward Family Children's Music Shelf: Audio and video musical tapes for children.

Endowment

Endowment Fund: Donations help to secure the future, enrich the programs and provide for emergency needs of the congregation.

Scholar In-Residence Endowment Fund: Supports the endowment established by Shirley and Henry Kraus. This fund enables Temple Shalom to bring visiting scholars to the Temple as an educational benefit to the membership.

The Herbert & Ruth Abramson Fund: To supplement the general operating fund and to provide enrichment for Temple functions.

Clergy/Leadership

Rabbi Miller’s Discretionary Fund: For tzedakah, charitable purposes,and general enhancement of the Rabbi's work.

Cantor Azu's Discretionary Fund: For tzedakah, charitable purposes, and general enhancement of the Cantor's work.

Leadership Fund: Donations are used for the enhancement and enrichment of leadership programs at Temple Shalom.

Library

Rabbi James & Jane Perman Library: Books, magazine subscriptions and supplies are purchased.

Social Action

David and Lillian Thalenfeld Fund for Social Justice: Provides support for Temple participation in social justice events and activities.

**Oneg Shabbat:

Contact Sandy Stone (Oct. 15 to May 15) or Evelyn Cole (May 16 to Oct. 14) for sponsorship in celebration of an event or to honor someone. This fund is administered by Temple Shalom Sisterhood.
