From Rabbi Miller Only a few weeks ago, our community mourned the loss of Abe Price. A Holocaust survivor, Abe dedicated his life to educating others by sharing his story. Many of us heard him, and know the darkness that he experienced – having escaped certain death from the Nazis on five different occasions. One of the most profound teachings that Abe shared, came out of his time in Auschwitz. Abe would often remark, “There were no sounds of children or birds ever in the camp.”

As a result, Abe welcomed any presence of children and life, particularly at the synagogue. Whenever a child talked or made noise near him during a service, Abe would simply smile at the child. In the week before his death, Abe picked up a toddler waddling by him and held him on his lap. In this way, Abe embodied the teachings of the rabbis who believed that a community without youth and life was a community without a future.

We know that our Temple Family spans the generations. Our children are the future, and it is our responsibility to build and strengthen the next generation of Jews. Developing and maintaining relationships between the generations is key to our success in this area. That is why we provide so many opportunities to engage our youngest members together with the young at heart. On Mitzvah Day, we watch 5 year olds and 95 year olds pack food together to help the hungry. At Operation Nachas, our 6th graders share stories with grandparents and those from their grandparent’s generation. And this year we are adding an intergenerational component to our Religious School mock

Seder, with older members joining each class.

While these programs build relationships and strengthen the sense of Temple Family, programs alone cannot accomplish our goals. If we want to truly be an intergenerational community, then we have to actively seek to meet and connect with others who are older or younger than ourselves. Toward this end, we have taken steps to further bring the generations together. On Sunday mornings and Wednesday afternoons, we opened the Temple Bean – providing coffee and nosh for anyone who wants to stop by. This is not just for Religious School parents. We welcome all of our members to make use of this social space to connect together.

In addition, you will now notice a large red wagon by the sanctuary doors when you enter. This wagon has quiet games and activities for children when they come to services. We want families to feel comfortable attending, and encourage you to bring kids or even grandkids! Their voices and presence will only add more joy to our worship.

As we say at every Jewish wedding in the Seven Wedding Blessings (sheva berachot) – “May the voices of children always be heard celebrating joyfully in the streets of Israel.” May our work connecting together the generations of Temple Shalom increase the presence of children, that their joyful and playful songs will uplift our spirits today, and carry with them the hopes for our tomorrow.

From Cantor Azu For more than twenty centuries, Jews have recalled the great Exodus of their ancestors from the enslavement of Egypt by retelling its story on the holiday of Passover. Passover asks us to do one simple thing: tell the story. Tell the story of how a people, enslaved and oppressed, was brought out from bondage and made into a great nation by God. Jews in every land in every age since the Haggadah was created have told their children the tale of the ancient journey into freedom, and through the telling have kept its memory alive. Therefore, each generation has grown up feeling that the story is part of their own history, and in time they tell it to their children.

Indeed, many American Jews who are non-observant participate in the Passover holiday by attending or conducting some kind of Seder.

In addition to teaching our religious school students about Passover, they also participate in a model Seder. Here at Temple Shalom we like to provide multiple opportunities for you to take part in several different kinds of Seders. Hopefully there is one here for you!

• On Monday, April 7 at 6pm, Caren Plotkin and I will co-lead the Women’s Seder, rejoicing and celebrating the brave women

of Judaism. It’s a joyous gathering where grandmothers, mothers, daughters and friends join together as we retell our story of freedom. Jane Galler and Lori Cohen will join me in song and dance as we celebrate this special holiday.

• Temple Shalom’s Children’s Chocolate Seder will take place on Sunday, April 13 at 12:15pm. Geared towards children age 3-9, this will be a mock version of a Passover meal celebrating the ancient Jews’ exodus from Egypt, with all the traditional foods -- matzah, bitter herbs, and charoset -- replaced by various kinds of chocolate. We’ll sing songs, eat pizza, drink chocolate milk, eat chocolate covered matzah, and savor other delectable treats at our very own non-traditional Passover Seder.

• Join Rabbi Miller and myself as we lead you in a traditional second night One Family, Community Seder on April 15 at 6pm. We’ll enjoy a delicious dinner together as we read the Haggadah and retell the stories of our ancestors.

President’s Message

by Yale Freeman Just a few weeks to go! A new Board of Trustees, with a new president, will soon lead our Temple family on the next stage of our journey I’m grateful for these past two years. Many thanks to my fellow members of the Board for your help, support and hard work.

My sincere thanks to our staff who has worked so hard to keep us on track: our education directors, Caren Plotkin and Seyla Cohen; our office team, Jo Icaza, Maxine Gould, Randi Butterworth, and John Kepsel and his staff; and to Susan Daugherty for her years of dedication to Temple Shalom.

Thank you to Rabbi Miller and Cantor Azu. For your ideas, your enthusiasm, your support and your leadership – both spiritual and in all Temple matters.

Thank you to Sisterhood and Men’s Club for feeding us, sponsoring so many activities, and providing generous financial support, year after year.

Thank you to each and every member of our congregation. I’m so fortunate to have met and gotten to know many of you. So fortunate that so many of you work for the betterment of our Temple.

Thank you to every Temple member for choosing to be affiliated with Temple Shalom. Thank you to those who have participated in activities, attended services, given to causes and contributed to our funds. Thank you to each and everyone who has taken the time to contact me and meet with me, to not only present problems, but also offer solutions and sometimes even offer to be part of the solution.

Again and again. In good times and bad. Your generosity is a blessing.

As a Temple family, we have achieved much. We’ve scribed Our Torah which is taken from the arc every Shabbat and has already been read from by several B’nai Mitzvah. We are restructuring our management and have restructured our committees. We have prepared a strategic plan and have begun implementation. Our One Family initiative driven by “relational Judaism” has gotten off to a good start.

There is so much more to accomplish as we move forward as One Family. Like any family, we’ll have difficulties. We’ll have disputes.

We’ll have financial concerns. We will need to deal with how we educate our children and how we practice our religion. But we will move forward, together, on that next part of our journey.

I want to apologize to those whose initiatives or suggestions could not be moved forward during this two-year period. I apologize to those who I may not have been adequately responsive to or those who feel I did not deal with other issues facing the Temple. I am sorry.

As this portion of our trip draws to a close, I thank you for this incredible opportunity to try to make a difference, and to kick off the next 50 years of Temple Shalom. Most importantly, thank you for sharing your stories with me.

Kavod and Board Shabbat We read in Talmud (Rosh Hashanah, 29a) the story of Moses’ efforts to lead the people into battle against their sworn enemy, Amalek: “And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed” Exodus 17:11 – in this story in the Torah, the Israelites would prevail in battle with the Amalekites if Moses’ hands were held up. [Moses’ hands] became very heavy, so two people helped him by holding up his hands. But did the hands of Moses actually wage war or win victories? Not actually: what the text means is that so long as [Moses’ hands were up] Israel turned their thoughts upward and submitted their hearts to their God in heaven causing them to prevail. [If Moses’ hands were down] they fell.”

The most important element of the story: the two anonymous individuals who came to Moses’ aid. Those two people were there to support Moses in his efforts. When Moses began to fail, they were there to raise Moses’ hands, and, by extension, the thoughts of the Israelites heavenward. Without their aid, Moses would not have been successful in his leadership.

As the most visible leaders of the congregation, the professional staff and Temple officers are, like Moses, often credited with the synagogue’s successes. However, a congregation can only 4

succeed when the work of the leadership is supported by its members. Temple Shalom could not succeed without the tireless dedication of the volunteers who give of their time and energy in service to the synagogue.

Last year began the new tradition of Kavod – recognizing a group of volunteers who make a difference in our congregation.

Dedicating themselves to our Temple, these individuals receive no financial reward for their efforts, but rather the satisfaction of making Temple Shalom a wonderful place. We celebrate them and what they mean to our community.

On Friday night, April 11th, we will honor both our Board Members for their service as leaders, and volunteers who are receiving the Kavod honor this year. Join us for that special night – when we raise up and honor those who have uplifted Temple Shalom:

From the Religious School Director

by Caren Plotkin We challenge you To Be the Change!

All year long we have been focusing on the Jewish value of Tikkun Olam-Repairing the World. The students have shared what they have learned about Tikkun Olam during our T’filah on Sunday mornings and at their Parent/ Child Interactive programs. They have picked mitzvah projects such as making cards for the sick, supporting various local and Israeli organizations with their Tzedekah, helping with Temple Shalom’s “Buy One Bring One” food collection for JFCS - to name a few.

In August, during our Teacher In-Service workshop, we learned about the “Be The Change Challenge “project sponsored by e’Bella Magazine, through Kathy Feinstein. The project’s mission is to raise awareness that social change is possible and to inspire people to take action that results in positive change. Kathy challenged us to participate in the program’s “30 Days of Acts of Kindness” and we accepted. Each teacher proposed this idea with his/her students then brainstormed ideas of Acts of Kindness. Once they came up with their list the class’ “30 Days” projects were launched into action. One class developed

B’nai Mitzvah Mazel Tov to Charlotte Atkins April 5, 2014

My name is Charlotte Atkins and my parents are Debra Antzis and Chad Atkins. I am the oldest sibling.

My sister’s name is Nora. I attend Community School of Naples. I am interested in reading, singing and acting.

a Mitzvah Wheel, where the students suggested things they could do and those ideas were put onto a wheel with a spinner. Each week they spin the wheel and do that Act of Kindness all week long, then share the experience in class. Another class sends home a Mitzvah Basket with a student each week containing a bear and a journal.

The bear does Mitzvot with the child and the family and they record their experiences and share them in class. Two of our classes have 3-D Mitzvah Trees up on the wall and each week the students add their Mitzvah leaves to the tree. A few classes have created “Acts of Kindness” coupon books during their class’ Parent/Child Interactive program while others created a 30 day calendar page with an Act of Kindness to do each day.

We are finding out that when you make the effort to do an Act of Kindness every day, after a while it becomes second nature. Temple Shalom Religious School is repairing the world, one Act of Kindness at a time, so we challenge you to join us too! Preschool on Parade

by Seyla Cohen, Preschool Director Starting on June 9th, we are going to have fabulous summer camp programs. Camp Shalom is offering a magnificent 7 week summer camp program to children ages two through six and Camp Einstein is a fun-filled academic camp for children five through eight years old.

Camp hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with flexible early pick up times and daily drop off programs. Sign up before we are all filled up! We don’t want anybody to miss out on these amazing programs.

Students have been working hard to ready their masterpieces for display at the annual Temple Shalom Preschool Art Show scheduled to be held Thursday evening, May 1st beginning at 6:30PM. Each year pieces crafted by children at the preschool adorn the walls of the Social Hall where parents gather to view artwork created by their children under the guidance of Art Director, Linda Ginsberg.

Various mediums and innovation techniques are used to produce

remarkable designs by the students in their preschool years. Children are thrilled to preview the show earlier in the day, excited and proud to see their projects displayed for all to observe. Such an exhibition gives them a sense of pride and confidence, so important to the selfesteem of our preschool students.

The Annual Art Show is an opportunity for parents, relatives, congregants and friends to gather, mingle and enjoy a pleasant evening of wine, refreshments, and music. At the same time, they are given the opportunity to purchase student’s creations, participate in the silent auction, and bid on many other items and services auctioned and raffled off. As in the past, the evening will prove a welcoming, warm and attentive fundraiser from which students, families, and the preschool benefit. Moneys raised during this entertaining event provide funds to support scholarships for Temple Shalom Preschool families in need of aid with tuition and also for enrichment of the preschool.

Sisterhood News

by Sandy Stone, Sisterhood President March has been a very busy month for the Sisterhood. On March 12 we had what we hope will be an annual joint meeting with the Men’s Club. We are so very fortunate to have so many talented people in our congregation! One of these is Jim Sernovitz, a nationally recognized travelogue and nature photographer who travels to a number of places along with his wife Millie. We at Temple are the lucky recipients of the stories of their exciting travels. This year, Jim shared with us “South East Asia: 10,000 Temples and No Rabbis.” The audience loved every minute of his presentation and we all enjoyed the Chinese buffet, ice cream and homemade cookies. We even had a raffle! We all left with the feeling of having been transported to another world far away from Naples… Thank you Jim for such an exceptional afternoon!

We are never one to rest on our laurels, so here comes the list of our April events!

First on this list is our fabulous Women’s Seder on Monday, April 7, where we will dance, sing and celebrate the women of the Bible. The prices are: $18 for members and guests, and $10 for daughters under the age of 18. I can guarantee that you will be thrilled when you attend this special evening, and enjoy the homemade Passover dishes we all bring to share. Call the Temple office to RSVP. sure your home is outfitted with all the new and gorgeous items selected for the Passover season!

Continuing with this month’s events. On Friday, April 25 at 7:30 p.m. we will be celebrating our Sisterhood Shabbat. We will have a special URJ service and the members of Sisterhood will participate in the service. We cordially invite all members of Temple Shalom to celebrate with us at our Special evening.

Our final luncheon of the season will be held on April 29. This will be a fun and delicious afternoon and a major fundraiser. We will begin at 11:30 a.m. with a magnificent lunch held at Roy’s in the Promenade in Bonita Springs, followed by a short Sisterhood meeting to vote on the budget and for the installation of the new Sisterhood officers for 2014-16. The very talented Jane Galler will do the honors and provide the music. After this meeting, we will adjourn to the marvelous store that has returned to the Promenade. Evelyn and Arthur’s is back and they are inviting us to shop on this day only with 10 percent off everything you purchase. Our own Temple models will be on hand to show off the store’s beautiful clothes. What a delightful day is in store for Sisterhood on April 29!

This season has had many varied, fun and educational programs, both in the evening and the afternoons. We are already planning ahead for the upcoming season in the fall, so if you have any suggestions for the next season, please call me at 597-1553.

We Need A Few Good Pilots!

No…not airplane pilots, but Temple members who will pilot sections of the new, two-volume Machzor (High Holy Day prayer book), that is being developed by the Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR). Our present Machzor is over 35 years old and contains language that has become obsolete. Reform Judaism has evolved over these many years and a new prayer book is needed with liturgy that is inspirational, traditional and innovative, reflecting the aspirations of our people today.

The new Machzor is being designed by a committee of scholars from the URJ rabbinical and cantorial schools, as well as input from professors of Judaic studies, pulpit rabbis, and cantors from across the United States and Canada.

Temple Shalom is honored to be a part of the piloting program for the new Machzor. We will be piloting the sections for Rosh Hashanah morning, Kol Nidrei, and Yom Kippur afternoon. The piloting program will take place on two evenings in our sanctuary. Contributions to Temple Shalom Showing We Care

Contributions made to the various Temple Shalom funds are wonderful ways to show your appreciation of family and friends, to celebrate happy occasions and to honor the memories of loved ones. We suggest a minimum donation of chai ($18.00). With a minimum donation of $18.00, a notice of your gifts will be sent to the honoree and mention will be published monthly in The Voice.

Operations

General Fund: Donations used for operating expenses.

Tree of Life: Each ‘Rock’ and ‘Star of David’ is a donation of $540.00; each ‘Leaf ’ is $240.00. The contribution must be received in its entirety before engraving is ordered.

Burn The Mortgage Fund: Established by Gerry and Pearl Sugarman to reduce payment of any existing mortgage.

Endowment

Religious School Enrichment Fund: Donations augment the Religious School budget to enrich the education of our children.

Scholar In-Residence Endowment Fund: Supports the endowment established by Shirley and Henry Kraus. This fund enables Temple Shalom to bring visiting scholars to the Temple as an educational benefit to the membership.

Religious School: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for Jewish learning in both Sunday and Hebrew Schools.

Polster Religious School Scholarship Fund: To purchase or supplement Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Ben Calmenson Fund: Donations will be used to create sponsorships to send children to attend Camp Coleman.

Rabbi Abraham Shusterman Children's Center Memorial Fund: To support our Religious School and Preschool.

Sisterhood Religious School Scholarship Fund: To provide Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Memorial Fund: Donations made in honor of a loved one who has passed.

Joseph S. Weinfeld Faculty Development Fund: Donations support both curriculum and teaching skill enrichment activities for Sunday and Hebrew School teachers.

William Freschel Kiddush Fund: All donations help provide Kiddush Lunch each Saturday following worship services.

A $150 donation is considered to be a sponsorship to honor a special someone or occasion.

Youth Activities Fund: Donations provide financial support for children of our congregation to attend Camp Coleman, to take part in regional/national youth conventions, and to experience a summer in Israel.

Prayerbook Fund The new minimum contributions to purchase a plaque are Shabbat and High Holiday Books: $50.00 / Pentateuch & Haftarah books: $100.00

Preschool

Flower Fund: Provides Bimah flowers each Shabbat. A $150.00 donation is considered to be a sponsorship in memory or in honor of a special someone or occasion.

Preschool Enrichment Fund: The enhancement of curriculum, educational programs and experiences.

Mitzvah Baskets: A $100.00 donation will purchase several hundred dollars of food for JFCS. Dr. Philip & Shirley Gilbert Music Fund: Donations are used for the enhancement of music at Temple Shalom.

Social Action
