Adam F. Miller “Passover – A Time for Learning” In my youth, I looked forward to Passover with a mix of excitement and dread. Our family had two afikomen traditions. On one side, the adults hid the afikomen, and the children received rewards for finding it. While on the other side, the children “steal” the afikomen, and the parents had to find it or ransom it back. Either way – the kids always won.

All that excitement was tempered by my responsibility with respect to the four questions. As one of the youngest cousins on both sides, I knew that each year the family would turn to me to chant those words (somehow my younger sister escaped).

By the time I reached bar mitzvah, the trepidation turned into a form of boredom. The questions and answers never changed!

I wanted to break out of the routine that lost meaning after years of repetition.

If only I knew then what I know now! We learn in the Mishnah the purpose of the Seder meal, “According to the knowledge of the child, a father instructs the child…” In other words, the goal of the Passover Seder is for parents to educate their children regarding the values and lessons of the holiday. The four questions and other rituals were intended to be starting points to begin the educational process. The rabbis did not intend for us to repeat the same questions and stop there. Instead, it was to be the beginning of the discussion, with the hope that each year we would go deeper in our learning.

Just as the Rabbis want us to explore the meaning of Passover beyond the initial four questions, the same is true for our Jewish education as adults. Our learning does not stop when we reached the age of bar/bat mitzvah, Confirmation or high school graduation. Our perspectives change over time, and we see the world much differently than we did at those earlier times in our lives. This explains the importance of on-going Adult Education in our congregation as we search for the proverbial fifth question and beyond.

Temple Shalom provides a variety of meaningful adult Jewish learning. These activities include our annual Scholar in Residence program, Wise Aging, Jewish Spirituality, single speaker sessions, and the popular Sunday School for Adults with Rabbi Perman. Three years ago, we welcomed the internationally acclaimed Florence Melton School for Adult Learning to Temple Shalom. More than 100 students participated in courses over this short time on topics that included: Jewish humor, American Jewish History, and the Holocaust.

The most amazing piece is that almost fifty students enrolled in the Melton Core Classes – a commitment to engage in 100 hours of Jewish learning over a three-year period. These women and men embraced the spirit intended by the Seder authors, and expanded their learning beyond the initial “four questions.” Join us on April 5, when we will celebrate the graduation of our first Melton Core cohort as part of our Shabbat service.

In addition to marking this milestone with our community, I encourage you at your Seder table, ask a fifth, sixth, seventh question or more. For those interested, the next Melton cohort begins in December 2019.

May your Seder be a celebration of freedom, and a time for learning.

W

hen most people think of Passover, they envision family Seders over brisket and matzah ball soup, reading out of the Haggadah, and numerous blessings over the cups of wine. One of my favorite things about the holiday is somewhat of a secret, at least within the Ashkenazi Jewish community. What I’m referring to is Mimouna, the name given to the little-known celebration that marks the end of Passover. The name Mimouna has several different, fascinating meanings. The most famous of them attribute the name to the Hebrew word “emuna” which translates as “belief.”

Originating in Morocco but popular throughout Sephardi Mediterranean Jewish communities, the Mimouna celebration marks the completion of the crossing of the Sea of Reeds, the actual beginning of the Jews’ path to freedom. In Sephardi synagogues in Mediterranean countries, the celebration begins after nightfall on the last day of Passover. The synagogue is opened, the Torah is taken from the ark and the Song of Songs is read while congregants dance in the aisles.

Following the Torah reading, the Mimouna festival begins. Families visit neighbors and friends, and accompanied by singing and dancing, they would feast on a lavish dairy spread with traditional holiday cakes, sweets and special pancakes called mufletta. Pita bread is cut into pieces and eaten by dipping a piece into honey, symbolizing how our families are glued together and that slavery and oppression will never again separate us. Mimouna was also the opportunity to finally satiate your cravings for leavened bread and other food prohibited on Passover!

Though I grew up with Persian Sephardi customs, I didn’t learn about Mimouna until I moved to Israel for my first year of cantorial school. In Israel, the Mimouna has become a popular annual happening featuring outdoor parties, picnics and BBQs. After settling in Israel, Jewish immigrants from North Africa celebrated the Mimouna with their families. In 1966, it was introduced as a national holiday, and has been adopted by members of other ethnic groups.

Growing up with a Moroccan mother and being raised in Israel, Mimouna was a tradition in my husband, Steve’s family.

For them, Mimouna was a time to celebrate luck and good fortune as well as the start of the spring season. Soon after Steve and I married, we began to incorporate Mimouna as a part of our Passover celebration. This year, wherever you are, I invite you to gather with friends and close out Passover together by connecting to your own roots and to the traditions and customs of others.

recently participated in a workshop that Temple Shalom co-sponsored with the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples called, “Speaking Across Differences.” The presenter, Rabbi Melissa Weintraub, used a variety of techniques to help members of Temple Shalom and the Jewish community in Naples improve our active listening skills while talking about Israel. She taught us to focus on what was actually being said to us in the moment, instead of thinking about our response to our partners. One way to do that is to “mirror” their language in order to create consensus around the discussion and continue thinking about a topic together. This is done by replying with phrases like, “Let me be sure that I understand” or “Do I have this right…?” Asking thoughtful questions helps too.

Active listening is an essential element of our work at Temple Shalom. One Family means that we create meaningful relationships, where people feel understood and respected. It’s not always easy to do, but we must all keep working on strengthening this skill in order to create real and engaging connections.

The act of active listening benefits the listener as well as the speaker because we learn and grow from others’ experiences and perspectives. I met someone during the program who holds different political viewpoints than I do on many key issues, but who surprised me by sharing many ideas about which we agreed. I gained an appreciation for the way that he thought about the issues we discussed. I would not have been able to hear his reasoning, if I had been less focused on listening and more focused on convincing him to think as I do.

Whether in meetings, in person or through social media, there are many opportunities to engage with each other, listen, and be heard. Flipping through the news stations on television, one might think that we have lost our common sense of purpose and a shared narrative about who we are as a nation and what we stand for. We could all use a little active listening training, I suspect. As the 2020 political season heats up, I hope that we can all take the lessons from Rabbi Weintraub to heart. Thank you, Jane Schiff and Jeffrey Feld and the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples, for bringing this important program to Temple Shalom.

Even though our Religious School students had the Sunday of spring break week off, Interim Religious School Director, Susan Feld, and our religious school teachers came to Temple that day for a teacher enrichment workshop. Susan asked me to attend to give opening remarks.

To my mind, what we do in the religious school is one of the most important things we do here at Temple Shalom.

Our teachers teach our children about our values and traditions so that the unbroken chain of Judaism continues. As a former Religious School teacher myself, I know that their job is very hard, and that not many can do it well.

It was my great pleasure to thank our teachers, and Susan Feld on behalf of the Temple Board of Trustees and our members. Their work is both critically important and largely uncelebrated, and we are deeply indebted to them. I am immensely grateful for all they do, and I thank them again.

By Helen Weinfeld, Temple Shalom Historian Temple Shalom has a Holocaust Torah, acquired from the Westminster Synagogue in London in 1978.

On the wall in the Board Room is a framed certificate in English and Hebrew. The English portion states: “The Sefer Torah number 22, which this certificate accompanies, is one of the 1564 Czech Memorial Sifre Torah which constituted part of the treasures looted by the Nazis during the 1939-1945 war from the desolated Jewish communities of Bohemia, Moravia and Slovakia, and which had been cared for by the Czechoslovak Government for many years, and which were acquired, with the good will of the Czechoslovak, by good friends from Artia (the state cultural agency) for Westminster Synagogue, where they arrived on the 7th February, 1964.

Some of the collection remains at Westminster Synagogue, a permeant memorial to the martyrs from whose synagogues they come; many of them are distributed throughout the world, to be memorials everywhere to the Jewish tragedy and to spread light as harbingers of future brotherhood on earth; and all of them bear witness to the Holy Name.”

In our file is a certification, dated August 1978, from its Memorial Scrolls Committee that states: To Whom It May Concern: This is to certify that Scroll No. 22 is the Hebrew Pentateuch and has been saved from the Nazis in Czechoslovakia. This scroll has been assigned on permanent loan by Westminster Synagogue to: Jewish Community Center, c/o J. Harris, 2329 Gulf Shore Blvd N, Naples, Florida 33940, USA This scroll is of emotional and sentimental consideration and is used in synagogues for religious and educational purposes.

The scroll came from Budin an der Eger and was written in 1874. Jews were first mentioned in Budin in the 13th century.

A synagogue was built in 1631, burned down in 1759 and rebuilt in 1821. There were 50 Jews living in Budin in 1930. The community was liquidated by the Nazis in 1942.

The Torah was presented to the congregation by Mr. and Mrs. Julius Harris on February 17, 1979. Julius Harris made most of the arrangements to obtain the Torah and have it shipped.

Pictures and an article about the presentation of the Torah appeared in the Naples Daily News, as well as in the Naples Star, a weekly paper. The original Torah cover says that the Torah is dedicated to the survivors of the Holocaust. The article written by Dr. Herbert March, our Public Relations Officer, tells the story of the Budin Torahs, explaining that “This particular Torah was written in 1874 and was in the possession of a congregation in Budin an der Eger before the Nazis burned down their synagogue. This sacred scroll has emotional and sentimental value for the Jewish Community Center and will be used for religious and education purposes.”

The file contains a letter form the Memorial Scrolls Committee dated June 13, 1978, indicating that they do not have a kosher scroll available, that their Scribe of eleven years left and all they could help us with was a damaged scroll.

It further stated: “A great many congregations have participated in a different aspect of our program. They have taken damaged scrolls (legible but not kosher) and have given them a special place in their sanctuary and use them for specific commemorative occasions and give them life and purpose in this fashion.”

The letter writer stated that if the Jewish Community Center did not want such a Torah, the $450 originally sent would be refunded.

LEARN WITH US There is no evidence of a reply, but a letter dated August 29, 1978, from the Westminster Synagogue states that Scroll No. 22 was “collected by our shipper and is being sent via air freight collect.”

When Rabbi Abraham Shusterman died, his widow, Rose, gave me the Rabbi’s personal file concerning the Holocaust Torah. It contained a copy of his original letter to the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, sending a check for $450, asking for a Holocaust Torah for the Jewish Community Center of Collier County.

The file also has copies of correspondence that show that on April 14, 1984 a member of the Hebrew Congregation of St. Thomas in Charlotte Amalie, spoke to our congregation at Rabbi Mark Golub’s invitation, about their Memorial Scroll No. 533 from Budin, and the fifteen families who died in the Holocaust.

From the St. Thomas Congregation’s program, we know those who perished were the families of Joseph Herman, Joachim Koralek, Filip Steiner, Dr. Hedrich Freudenfels, Victor Pick, Matylda Orenstelnove, Josef Brumlik, Julius Gellner, Otto Reich, Teresle Katz, Ida Katz, Ludvik Polak, Herman Neuman and Berthold Goldman.

Interim Director of Religious School Susan Feld, Ed.S.

Our Family Shabbat Experience, held in February, introduced children and their families to methods of creating opportunities to perform mitzvot. A crowd of more than fifty students and their families participated in Getting Ready for Mitzvah Day. The children learned how to create stretchy beaded bracelets under the direction of volunteers from Beading for Betterment, Carol Hirsch and Ida Margolis. The students were able to craft many colorful pieces of jewelry that will find their way to the Guadalupe Center for their Mother’s Day activities. As we expected, the students were so intrigued by the beading process that many also attended the beading session on Mitzvah Day. Students also painted and created the signage you may have noticed around the Temple on Mitzvah Day. Thanks to our volunteers and thanks to our Religious School teachers who assisted with the program.

The next Family Shabbat Experience is scheduled for Friday, April 12 at 5:30pm. The timely topic will be Passover. We will learn about the traditions, songs, food, and hands-on crafts related to the holiday that celebrates freedom. The Family Shabbat Experience is family-friendly, with dinner served and a joyous Shabbat service, followed by potluck desserts.

The hands-on activities are geared for kindergarten through sixth grade, but everyone is welcome. For reservations, $25 per family, $30 the night of the event, please contact Susan Feld at sfeld@naplestemple.org.

Our Temple Shalom Religious School sixth grade students will be active participants in the annual Yom HaShoah service and observance. The community wide program will be held at Temple Shalom at 10:00am on Sunday, April 28. The students have had the experience of touring the Holocaust Museum Boxcar and have personally conducted interviews with local Holocaust survivors. They’ve written reflective essays and will be speaking at the observance.

March was an exciting month for us. We started off honoring our incredible teachers with Teacher Appreciation Week. Our Wonderful POTS committee set up a week of themed gifts and treats for our teachers who all work so hard throughout the year, giving their all to our precious preschool children. Our 2nd Annual Purim Carnival was another great success. Because of the generosity of the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples, we were able to have a petting zoo, Too Tall Torrie, a bounce house, an obstacle course and other great activities. Of course there was hamentaschen and our very own Ms. Jane, aka, Queen Esther, presented the Purim puppet show.

Coming up this month is Camp Day, where our students will get a taste of what will be offered at our camps this summer.

During the long summer, we offer a wonderful way to occupy and enrich the lives of our campers. Camp Shalom is for children in the 2-4-year age range and Camp Einstein is for boys and girls ages 5-8. Both camps offer even weekly sessions beginning June 3rd.

As in the past, CAMP SHALOM provides a fun-filled program for the younger crew including music, art, water play, science, technology, storyland and dance. New friendships are formed and social interaction, so important at this age, is sustained. A weekly theme entertains little ones making each week a new and exciting experience.

For older kids, CAMP EINSTEIN proves a wonderful link between a carefree atmosphere and maintaining a stimulating educational environment. Parents concerned about keeping learning alive and inquisitive minds active have come to welcome this wonderful program. Literature, science, math, reading, technology, and art are provided in a relaxed and engaging climate helping to provide continuity in education during the long summer holidays.

We are also looking forward to our TSP Passover Seder. Our families all join together in celebrating the joyous holiday of Passover and get a taste of a mini Seder.

We are pleased to announce this year’s Temple Shalom Preschool Art Show will be held Saturday, May 4 at 5:30 p.m.

The Art Show committee promises this year will be like no other. With the Kentucky Derby as the theme, they will be planning an unforgettable evening with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, interactive entertainment, silent auctions and, of course, the children’s art work.

Each year pieces crafted by children at the preschool adorn the walls of the social hall where parents gather to view artwork created by their children under the guidance of Art Director, Linda Ginsberg. Such an exhibition gives the children a sense of pride and confidence, so important to the self-esteem of our preschool students.

The Annual Art Show is an opportunity for parents, relatives, congregants and friends to gather, mingle and to enjoy a pleasant evening of wine, refreshments, and music. At the same time, they are given the opportunity to purchase student’s creations, participate in the silent auction, and bid on many other items and services auctioned and raffled off. As in the past, the evening will prove a welcoming, warm and attentive fundraiser from which students, families, and the preschool benefit. In addition to providing funds for our enrichment program, moneys raised during this event, along with Jewish Federation of Greater Naples grants provide funds to support scholarships for Temple Shalom Preschool families in need of aid with tuition.

The Difference between an A ffinity Group and a Havurah I have been asked, “What is the difference between an affinity group and a havurah and can you do both?” The answer is, you certainly can be in an affinity group and a havurah as they are vastly different. Some people are so busy in an affinity group that they feel they cannot make a commitment to a havurah and that is fine as well.

An affinity group is a group that you belong to which may meet several times a week, once a week or monthly in an activity, such as tennis, pickle ball, poker, book group. They are more like clubs. If you live in a community that has clubs, those are affinity groups. WCA and MCA have many affinity groups. Educational groups such as Melton would be considered an affinity group.

A havurah usually is made of families that may have some things in common, but are not exclusive to one activity. A havurah becomes an extended family that celebrates the holidays together, shares lifecycle events and plans other events where they get together. Some of our havurot have been together for 20 years, watching their families grow. The key to keeping a havurah together is establishing some rules to follow and planning activities based on the interests of the group.

Some groups are more social, others would like to attend educational and religious events. The key is communication within the group. And just like a family, not everyone may agree and you need to discuss concerns or frustrations.

We have several new havurot and I am very excited about that. It does take time, energy and commitment to be a part of a havurah. Temple Shalom Shiva Minyan Mitzvah Group Every Jewish law, ritual and custom having to do with death and mourning leads to kavod, a word that means honor and respect. Jewish law and custom create time for grief and provide a methodology for mourning.

The term shiva is taken from the Hebrew word for “seven," referring to the seven days of intensive mourning following the death of a loved one. Making a shiva call and joining a minyan at the shiva home is considered a mitzvah, the fulfillment of a commandment and a good deed.

Would you like to be included on the list of Temple Shalom members who fulfill the mitzvot of honoring the dead and comforting mourners?

You do not have to attend every minyan that is announced, only when you are able to attend. Ezra Bershadski 4.06.2019 Ezra Vladimir is the son of Rudy and Rocío Bershadski and a big brother to Shelí and Noa. Born in Chicago, Ezra has been living in Naples since 2006. He is currently an 8th grader at North Naples Middle School and will be attending Gulf Coast High School in the Fall. In addition to being part of the NNMS Wildcats soccer team, he has been playing competitive soccer with the Florida Fire team. He is also a swimmer and was part of the T2 Aquatics team when he made it to FLAGs. He loves music, plays the guitar and enjoys DJ’ing for his friends. Ezra is known for his warm heart and kindness. He is looking forward to his Bar Mitzvah.

R andi Butterworth: Clergy A ssistant Randi started working as the Clergy Assistant at Temple Shalom in March of 2008. Randi helps the clergy with day to day tasks, life cycle events and scheduling.

She also is responsible for accounts receivables.

Randi was born and raised in New York City. She moved to Naples in 2000 with her late husband, Billy and her two children, Lauren and Jared.

In New York, Randi was an Administrative Assistant and then became Office Manager of a recruitment firm specializing in placement of permanent and temporary employees.

Randi loves going to the beach and spending time with her four grandchildren.

SEDER IN A BOX Did you know that right here in Naples and the surrounding areas there are Jewish people who cannot afford to buy food?

The Naples Senior Center at JFCS Food Pantry and Financial Assistance Programs help over 360 households put food on their tables! Eighty percent (80%) of the individuals using the Naples Senior Center’s geriatric case management, financial assistance and food pantry programs earn less than $20,000 per year, with 35% earning under $15,000 per year.

Passover begins on the evening of April 19. The families Naples Senior Center at JFCS assists through our Food Pantry and Financial Assistance programs do not have the money to buy the foods we traditionally associate with this important holiday. Ninety-two percent (92%) of the Jewish households we serve are seniors. Twenty-three percent (23%) are Holocaust survivors.

This year the Naples Senior Center at JFCS wants to give every Jewish family with financial needs a “Seder in a Box”. To make this mitzvah happen we are asking you to consider making a donation of chai ($18) to Naples Senior Center at JFCS. Your gift of $18 will enable the organization to purchase enough matzo, gefilte fish, grape juice and other foods associated with Passover. We will be helping the Naples Senior Center at JFCS address the challenging problem of food insecurity in our community.

Tikkun Olam Council Chair Ken Goldstein Civility and K indness: “Building a Culture of Dialogue across Differences”

F

or many of us, we have relationships that are strained or even broken because of strongly held political views. For this reason, the Tikkun Olam Council (TOC) held a forum on Jewish Values and Civility last year.

As a follow up to this forum, the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples and Temple Shalom sponsored a workshop on how we can more effectively have conversations that encourage people to first share their concerns, aspirations and experiences. The goal of the workshop is to “build dialogue and deliberation across political disagreement in ways that support participants to explore issues of concern to them without intimidation or fear, to deliberate over those issues in partnership with one another, and to sustain that same partnership and exploration even if and when differences and divisions arise.”

What we learned is the importance of listening and understanding what we heard. We also need to actually demonstrate that we heard the essence of what was said. A great way to start this feedback is by asking a simple question, “OK. Let me see if I get it.” We don’t need to repeat every word that was spoken, just “the heart of the matter.” Hopefully we’ll hear the speaker say something like, “Yeah, you got it.” You probably won’t change his or her opinion, but you will have created a relationship whereby real dialogue can exist.

I’m sure you noticed I used the word “kindness” alongside civility. Recently, David Brooks wrote an op-ed piece entitled “Kindness Is a Skill” and it resonated with me. I’ve copied the link for this piece below. One particular quote is something we should all consider when engaging in a heated debate. He said, ”Presume the good. Any disagreement will go better if you assume the other person has good intentions.”
