“If you will, it is more than a dream” Theodor Herzl Theodor Herzl famously wrote those prophetic words in his diary near the end of the 19th century in reference to his Zionist dream for the modern state of Israel. What seemed nearly impossible at the time came to fruition fifty years later with the declaration of Israel’s independence in 1948. Dreaming big is what we have always done – even before the time of Herzl. This month we celebrate the holiday of Passover. Our ancestors dreamed of freedom from servitude to Pharaoh more than three thousand years Rabbi ago. Ten plagues and a trip across the Red Sea later, they reached their goal.

Adam Miller Two thousand years ago, the early rabbis created the ritual of the Passover Seder – to let them talk about their dream of freedom from Roman oppression. The discussion was disguised in talk about Egypt, participants reclined while they ate, and an egg sat on the table, like all Roman style meals. Now the ritual of the Seder is embedded in our culture, and we continue to use it as a motif to dream for a day when all may be free from servitude and oppression.

Dreams live on in every generation. Fifty-four years ago, four families dreamed of one day having a vibrant Jewish community in Naples. Those families embraced Herzl’s words and formed the Jewish Community Center of Collier County.

What began as their dream is today known as Temple Shalom – a home for living Judaism, loving Judaism and sharing Judaism.

Last month we saw the vision of Stephanie Heuer, Neil Heuer, Veora Little and Dr. John Little come to fruition after a year of planning with the magnificent Dream On: A Night of Stars. I am grateful to the chairs, as well as to the dozens of volunteers who worked on the committees and behind the scenes to make that dream a reality. Thank you to all who attended and made the evening a sparkling success – including our special honorees Dr. Mark Rubin, Anne Rubin, Howard Solot and Janet Solot. Each one of our honorees has embraced and supported big dreams for our community.

May we all be inspired to Dream On, and make even bigger dreams for Temple Shalom’s future, as well as the future of the Jewish people, become reality.

Upcoming Choir Passover, one of the most celebrated Jewish holidays, Rehearsals has always been a time for gathering and reflecting on Judaism’s April 7 & 14 commitment to freedom and social justice. For many Jewish 6:30PM to 7:30PM families, Passover is a time steeped in tradition. The Haggadah that is used to tell the story of the Jews’ Exodus from Egypt, like the recipes that complement the Passover meal, has often been passed down from generation to generation.

In recent years, Jews have created new Seder rituals and themes, updated the Haggadah and created new Haggadot in order to make their celebration of the holiday more meaningful.

Cantor Innovations in the Haggadah, and what is included on the Seder plate are certainly valuable for Donna Azu keeping things fresh at the Seder while still sticking to the centuries-old script.

Caren Plotkin introduced Temple Shalom to the Women’s Seder, celebrating the brave women of Judaism. Using the music of Debbie Friedman, it’s a joyous gathering where grandmothers, mothers, daughters and friends join together as we retell our story of freedom. Celebrating its 16th year, Caren Plotkin and I will co-lead the Women’s Seder on Monday, April 11 at 6:00PM. Jane Galler and Lori Cohen will once again accompany us in song and dance.

For our little ones, the Children’s Chocolate Seder will take place on Sunday, April 10 at 11:00AM. For children through 3rd grade, this will be a mock version of a Passover meal celebrating the ancient Jews’ exodus from Egypt with all the traditional Seder items replaced by chocolate! Instead of four cups of wine, we’ll have 4 cups of chocolate milk. Instead of bitter herbs we’ll have bittersweet chocolate. Instead of dipping parsley in salt water, we dip strawberries in chocolate sauce. Instead of a roasted egg on the Seder plate we’ll have a Cadbury’s chocolate egg. Instead of a meal we’ll enjoy an ice cream sundae. I’ll admit it isn’t the healthiest of events, but it’s a delicious way to remember and tell the story of Passover using our chocolate themed Haggadah.

If you’re a traditionalist, we also have our Second Night Temple Seder on Saturday, April 23 at 6:00PM co-led by myself and Rabbi Miller. With so many ways to celebrate our freedom, I hope to see you at one of our many Seders!

I have learned a great deal about the operations of the Temple in addition to developing an appreciation of all the hard work of the staff and volunteers ensuring that Temple Shalom is the best it can be. I have come to appreciate the deep passion that the members have for our Temple.

Tikkun Olam Council - Social Action & Social Justice at Temple Shalom Join Us in Helping to Feed the Hungry Judaism is very clear about our obligation to feed the hungry. “And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not wholly reap the corners of thy field, neither shalt thou gather the gleanings of thy harvest . . . thou shalt leave them for the poor and stranger.” (Leviticus 19:9-10) Today, we meet this commandment by filling BOGO bags with food, giving money to organizations such as the Harry Chapin Food Bank, or participating in Mitzvah Day here at Temple Shalom when we package 50,000 meals for Meals of Hope.

Members of the Tikkun Olam Council (TOC) are also helping to feed the hungry by doing hands-on work at both the Harry Chapin Food Bank warehouse and the mobile pantry right here in Collier County.

During a recent TOC meeting, Stan Farb suggested we get involved by volunteering at the Harry Chapin Food Bank. He did the research and gave a report to the council about specific opportunities at the warehouse and mobile food pantry. Stan led the way by volunteering at the mobile pantry. Here is what he wrote after his experience: “Volunteering for the Harry Chapin Mobile Food Bank makes one acutely aware of how many people, especially those with children, depend on these food pantries.The large quantities of food donated by local suppliers and supermarkets exemplify the best in corporate responsibility. Almost to a person the recipients expressed their thanks. All in all, time well spent.”

Another member, Ken Goldstein, went to the warehouse with his wife Diana and Sharon McCarthy, a neighbor in their com munity. Here is his experience: “The three of us agreed to volunteer at the warehouse in Collier County on Friday February 26th for the 12:00PM to 3:00PM shift.

We arrived shortly before noon and were greeted by Todd Lewis, Collier County Volunteer Coordinator. After completing some paperwork we went into the warehouse with three other volunteers.

Our task this day was to pack red potatoes into 3 pound sacks.

all thought we would never be able to repack all of them in only three hours. Not only did we repack every box but we did it in two and a half hours!

While we worked we talked and found out about our fellow volunteers. One woman was an attorney from Michigan, another man was a retired IT manager from New Jersey and the final volunteer was a woman from Boston. We got to know each other and we also heard about the many good things that Harry Chapin does every day throughout the year. Here are some of the things we learned…

Mazel Tov to: Dr. Anna Salomon, RJE Director of Congregational Education

A couple weeks ago my youngest son, Adin (9), was talking about the Exodus narrative and Passover. He shared a synopsis of the story and then asked me if I believed it happened that way. I said that was a wonderful question and asked his thoughts. He pondered for a moment and said it probably happened that way but he wasn’t entirely sure. Then he went back and forth a bit before realizing I’d never answered his question personally. Adin again asked my thoughts and insisted on an answer. I replied instead with another question – does it really matter if it’s true or not?

This answer was clearly not what Adin was looking for and was completely baffling to him. I explained quite simply that for me, it isn’t about “truth” and whether I can prove something happened. It’s about shared Jewish memory. The Torah may or may not be true - I don’t think we’ll ever actually be able to “prove” it happened. What the Torah is to me, however, is the collective memory of the Jewish people. It’s thousands of years of shared narrative, shared memories. It’s a link between generations past and future, uniting us. I know that, true or not, we’ve been sharing these stories, creating meaning and ritual, the same way generations before us have. That is the power of Torah. When I think of it that way, does it really matter if it’s true? Not to me.

Justin Braverman on becoming a Bar Mitzvah April 9, 2016

Justin Braverman, son of Stacy and David, attends Community School of Naples. He has two brothers, Joshua and Zachary. Justin enjoys playing tennis and soccer. When not attending school or playing sports, Justin works with veterans and assists them by raising funds with bake sales and by making cards for their families.

Jacob McCarran on becoming a Bar Mitzvah

April 23, 2016 Jacob McCarran, son of Michelle and William, is a 7th grader in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and will be celebrating his Bar Mitzvah at Temple Shalom on April 23, 2016 to be closer to his greatgrandparents that live in Naples.

Jacob has a younger brother named Max. He has been competitively swimming since age 6, and also plays lacrosse. In school Jacob likes Social Studies, especially studying ancient civilizations. He also plays the cello. Jacob attends the Reform movement’s overnight camp outside of Philadelphia, and is excited that a few of his camp friends will come to Naples to be a part of his ceremony!

Sara Goodwich, daughter of Alison and Ron, is a 7th grader at the Community School of Naples.

She enjoys horseback riding and soccer as well as spending time with her family and friends.

It was our great pleasure to host a luncheon for Eli Montague, Temple Shalom’s new Executive Director.

The entire preschool staff was able to get to know him, his background, his experience and his vision for the future of our ‘One Family’. We are looking forward to working with him.

Students at Temple Shalom Preschool represent the future foundation of our synagogue. TSP provides the footing for little ones to adapt basic Jewish ideals and values. It is important that we realize the importance of encouraging the success of this segment of our organization. Our remarkable preschool staff is devoted to teaching and encouraging the next generation about principles so important to the healthy development of our culture. Our classrooms are equipped with state-of-the-art materials and learning supplies. The inviting, happy, positive atmosphere creates a feeling of warmth, friendship and family.

Promoting such values leads to a sense of community and strength.

So how can our congregation interact with and be part of our Preschool Family? There are many ways you can help to encourage this important endeavor.

• Attend fundraisers supporting Temple Shalom Preschool. There are various fundraising events throughout the year that provide extra services for our students.

These occasions are not only fun but are a tremendous boost to helping TSP be the best preschool it can be.

• Volunteer and contribute your talents.

TSP offers many extracurricular subjects to its students; art, Spanish, science, computer, storyland. It’s always a treat to have guests come to contribute their talents.

• Come visit classrooms, join our preschool Shabbat fun! Its’ an eye opener to discover what is going on in the other wing of our building. Our little ones are delightful and seeing them in action is certainly a treat.

• Inform the public about our state-of-the-art preschool. There are various competitive preschools in the Naples area. TSP ranks tops. It’s good to spread the word.

• Helping to fund various programs.

From before and after care programs, to scholarships for families unable to undertake tuition costs, to art, music, science, computer, classroom, library and playground equipment.

• Sponsorship.

Your place of business may be willing to help sponsor special programs provided for both students and staff throughout the year.

Here at TSP, the teachers and staff do an outstanding job; enrollment is up, higher than it has been in years. Why? Because of the incredible TSP experience, the amazing programs, and the dedicated teachers. Families stay with us from the time their little ones join Ms. Jane’s “Mommy and Me” classes until the time their youngest child graduates from preschool. What then? There is life at Temple Shalom after preschool! The next stepping stone is our wonderful Religious School. Let’s all help to make the bridge from Preschool to Religious School and the Temple even stronger.

Speaking of our wonderful Preschool staff, the POTS Committee along with our parents, celebrated our committed teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week. From all of us, to the committee and parents, a big thank you for acknowledging our dedication to your children. With all of the special gifts and notes, we feel loved and appreciated.

Let us not forget our upcoming annual Art Show, taking place Thursday, May 5, 2016, at 6:00PM in the Social Hall at Temple Shalom. From Sisterhood member Florence Hertzman: Temple Shalom Sisterhood would like to make you aware of an opportunity to participate in a wonderful international project. Stitch by Stitch is an exciting project enlisting volunteers from around the world to cross-stitch the entire Torah! Each participant is invited to cross-stich four verses of the Torah. When the project is finished, 1,463 canvases will have been completed and stitched together to form a scroll that will be 9 feet tall and about 100 yards long.

If you are interested in participating, you can order a kit that contains a canvas, a pattern for four verses, and embroidery. The cost is $18. You must agree to complete the text accurately and within six months. It is anticipated that the Torah will be completed and ready for display in about three years.

The One Family Initiative began two years ago to implement the concept of Relational Judaism as described by Dr. Ron Wolfson in his book by the same name. The author himself was the speaker at our kick-off event! Our focus, then and now, is to create systems and an environment at Temple Shalom that are conducive to engaging and connecting our members to each other and to Temple. Our One Family Team meets, brainstorms, considers options, and provides leadership and volunteers to bring our selections to fruition. To date, we have initiated: • Name badges and cabinet now in our lobby.

• Home-based Shabbat dinner structure.

• Additional new member engagement opportunities.

• Additional seasonal affiliate opportunities.

• Many Stories – a structure of one-on-one conversations among members.

• Redesigned and redecorated Perman Library with seating and coffee bar.

• Tribute Garden with seating (seating to be done).

• Techie Tutors – a member helping member technology-learning structure.

• Live and archived streaming video of services and events in our sanctuary.

• iTemple – a members only, member-driven computer platform connecting our members.

• Affinity groups for senior singles and for empty nesters (more to come).

• A “hearing loop” (coming soon) in our sanctuary to assist participation of members with hearing impairment.

In addition, the increased contact among our members has led to: • The development of our Tikkun Olam Council, a development and coordination body for social action work at Temple Shalom.

• The realization of the need for programming for our interfaith families.

All of these additions to our Temple Shalom experience have been led and carried out by our awesome volunteers, our members and our staff. Funding has been provided by the generosity of our members.

Dream On! A Night of Stars A note of thanks from the Co-chairs Neil Heuer

Over a year ago, Howard Solot asked Stephanie and I if we would co-chair a major fundraiser for the Temple. Before I could ask a single question Stephanie responded “yes!”

Who could say “no” to Howard? The rest, as they say, is history. We have been hard at work over the past year planning, meeting and reaching out to our community and members of One Family. Stephanie and I have been delighted and honored to co-chair this event with Dr. John and Veora Little. We truly could not have done this without them.

Their experience, perspective and genuine love for the Temple is evident in all that they do.

This is not unlike our fantastic honorees. Over the past year we have gotten to know the Rubins through a series of get togethers.

The Rubins are a rare breed. They care immensely about the Temple and it shows through their major contributions. Jewish continuity for their children, and all our children, is paramount. The Solots are the kindest people you could meet. Their contributions to the Temple are endless. As a parent and a beneficiary of all they give, I know our family is eternally grateful.

Howard has acted as my mentor in the Temple’s Leadership Program for over 2 years now. His wisdom is infinite! He continues to impart his wisdom by providing a very sane and logical perspective to all things Temple and beyond! He taught me the difference between spirituality and religion, as well as where the two intersect. He inspires me by teaching me how one doesn’t need to be asked to give. Giving comes from the heart and an innate desire to help the Temple, the community, the One Family.

These two couples have provided their own precious resources to the Temple without question. They are examples to us all. I hope you too will feel as inspired as Stephanie and I do.

Last but not least, I would like to thank the committee members, including the clergy and staff! Without all of you this evening would not have been a success. I can say I am very proud to have worked with all of you. Thanks for everything.

Looking back, the real joy for us has been working with a terrific team of volunteers starting with Stephanie and Neil Heuer, our Co-Chairs, the clergy, committee members and staff. It was exciting to experience their creativity, energy and selflessness!

Showing We Care

Contributions to Temple Shalom funds are wonderful ways to show your appreciation of family and friends, to celebrate happy occasions and to honor the memories of loved ones. We suggest a minimum donation of chai ($18.00). With a minimum donation of chai, a notice of your gift will be sent to the honoree and mention will be published monthly in The Voice.

Operations

General Fund: Donations used for operating expenses.

Tree of Life: Each ‘Rock’ and ‘Star of David’ is a donation of $540.00; each ‘Leaf ’ is $240.00. The contribution must be received in its entirety before engraving is ordered.

Burn The Mortgage Fund: Established by Gerry and Pearl Sugarman to reduce payment of any existing mortgage.

Worship

Memorial Fund: Donations made in honor of a loved one who has passed.

William Freschel Kiddush Fund: All donations help provide Kiddush Lunch each Saturday following worship services.

A $150 donation is considered to be a sponsorship to honor a special someone or occasion.

Flower Fund: Provides Bimah flowers each Shabbat. A $150.00 donation is considered to be a sponsorship in memory or in honor of a special someone or occasion.

Endowment

Religious School Fund: Donations purchase supplies and support activities for Jewish learning in both Sunday and Hebrew Schools.

Endowment Fund: Donations help to secure the future, enrich the programs and provide for emergency needs of the congregation.

Religious School Enrichment Fund: Donations augment the Religious School budget to enrich the education of our children.

Scholar In Residence Endowment Fund: Supports the endowment established by Shirley and Henry Kraus. This fund enables Temple Shalom to bring visiting scholars to the Temple as an educational benefit to the membership.

Polster Religious School Scholarship Fund: To supplement Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Ben Calmenson Fund: Donations will be used to create sponsorships to send children to attend Camp Coleman.

Rabbi Abraham Shusterman Children's Center Memorial Fund: To support our Religious School and Preschool.

Sisterhood Religious School Scholarship Fund: To provide Sunday and Hebrew School scholarships for students in need.

Joseph S. Weinfeld Faculty Development Fund: Donations support both curriculum and teaching skill enrichment activities for Sunday and Hebrew School teachers.
