RABBI’S MESSAGE
Rabbi
Adam F. Miller This has been a challenging time for us as individual and as a community. Separated physically, we strive to maintain our connection as One Family. I am in awe of the way that our congregation rallied over these last few weeks. Embracing our transition to being a virtual congregation, and maintain the relationships that define us as a holy community. Below are excerpts from one of my recent sermons during this pandemic. I pray that these words give you a sense of strength, hope and purpose. - Rabbi Adam Miller A friend shared an image online, I believe it was from the NY Times originally, of a Magen David Adom ambulance in Israel. What was striking about the image were the two crew members. One stood near the van with his back partially turned toward the camera. One could see that he had on a tallit, and his arm was wrapped in tefillin. From the photo one gleaned that the man was davening or just finished his prayers. Next to him was his partner. Kneeling on the ground, with a prayer rug out in front of him as he went through his morning call to prayer in the Muslim tradition. There are not enough words to express the power of that moment – a Jewish man and a Muslim man – fulfilling the sacred duty to save lives at a time of a pandemic. Each a man of faith, turning to his tradition to find the hope and strength to move forward. Together demonstrating the power of putting aside differences and working together to address this scourge and prioritize the sanctity of life. Seeing that image of the ambulance and its crew reminded me of a quote from Rev. Fred Rogers, Mr. Rogers as most of us think of him. On one episode of that classic children’s show, Mr. Rogers shared that his mother would respond to scary news or events by telling him “Look for the helpers.” He explained that at a time of crisis, one can take comfort and find hope by noting those who are responding, helping, and making a difference. We need to look to the helpers for inspiration, like those two men from Magen David Adom. Looking at the news, and within our social circles, we witness the heroic actions of helpers who are on the front lines of this crisis. The doctors, nurses, medical technicians, and first responders
who are risking their lives to help those who are battling COVID-19. Working day and night, they are all putting themselves in harm’s way to save the lives of those infected with this virus, as well as to protect the larger community. Please take the time to send a note of encouragement to anyone you know in these fields and let them know they are appreciated. Not only are our medical personnel key helpers during this tragedy, truly we all have the potential to be helpers. Turning again to the sage voice of Mr. Rogers, “All of us, at some time or other, need help. Whether we’re giving or receiving help, each one of us has something valuable to bring to this world. That’s one of the things that connects us as neighbors – in our own way, each one of us is a giver and a receiver.” Every individual is capable of making a difference, and bringing light at this time of darkness. Members of our congregation are already demonstrating this: • Shellie Spector is part of a group of individuals sewing masks that can be donated; • Volunteer opportunities exist at Meals of Hope to pre-package food bags so that pantries can stay open and provide for those in need; • Bobbie Katz, Tussy Shnider, and Ana Maria Tamargo are organizing volunteers to bring food and medical supplies to those who are in need. Unable to leave your home – that is not a limitation: • Contact the office if you want to reach out to other members of our One Family, strengthening our connections together; • Call a friend/family member who may be lonely; • Send a poem or a note to a friend or loved one. Put a smile on their face, and lighten their load, if even just for a brief moment. Witnessing the helpers gives us hope and comfort at a time of darkness. May we each embrace the challenge to discover how we can be a helper. May we bring hope to others, demonstrating that we are all neighbors and connected one to the other. And may our actions heal a piece of this broken world. Ken Yehi Ratzon, May it Be God’s Will. 3
CANTOR’S MESSAGE
Cantor
Donna Azu Growing up in California, I always looked forward to my family’s Passover Seder. Every year, my extended family of about 25-30 people would gather at my parents’ home for the first night Seder. My mother would spend hours preparing, starting with the Hallig (Persian charoset) days in advance. She would put in almonds, pistachios nuts and dates, wine, and pomegranate juice as well as quince, apples, and spices. She would make so much of it that it would last throughout the holiday, and she would have enough left over to give to all of the guests to take home with them at the end of the night. When preparing the Seder table, along with the Seder plate, a special plate would also be placed on the table filled with green scallions. During the Seder, when we arrived at “Dayeinu,” everyone would grab a long scallion and whack one another with them to simulate the whips of the slave drivers in Egypt. I always looked forward to this part of the evening. For me, this was a wonderful opportunity to “settle scores” with my cousins without really getting into trouble. Even a husband and wife would playfully (and lightly) hit each other. We almost never got through singing all of “Dayeinu”; we just beat each other up! At the end of the Seder we would continue eating traditional Persian food including sweet and sour stuffed grape leaves (dolmeh) and several varieties of rice dishes. Most non-Sephardic Jews are surprised to hear that I eat not only rice, but certain legumes, grains, and beans called kitniyot during Passover. While kitniyot is forbidden by Ashkenazi Jews, Sephardic Jews do not have the same prohibition. The Torah (Exodus 13:3) prohibits Jews from eating leaven (chametz) during Passover. There are only five grains that, according to Jewish law, can ferment and become chametz. These are wheat, barley, spelt (also known as faro), oats, and rye. These are also the only grains that can be made into matzah. Traditional Jewish law forbids eating, owning, or deriving benefit from these five grains in any amount and in any form throughout the holiday (other than when they are baked into matzah). However, over the years there has been much debate over the prohibition of kitniyot. The earliest mention of the custom to prohibit kitniyot dates from the 13th century and the discussion concerning their use goes back to Tannaitic times. The second century rabbi, Johanan ben Nuri, considered rice and millet to be close enough to the five grains that one could use them for matzah and over the centuries there has been much debate over the custom. A later Talmudic discussion contradicts Rabbi Nuri and mentions that the rabbis of the 3rd to 6th centuries used to put rice on the Seder plate. To date, there is still much debate over the custom of kitniyot. Rather than explain the controversy in detail, I will point you to the following article that lays out the issues: https://www.myjewishlearning.com/article/kitniyot-not-quite-hametz/ Customs and traditions are important aspects of our familial history, whether they have a basis or not. They are an important element in the understanding of who we are as a people and the experiences that we have faced. A sweet Pesach to you all! Cantor Donna Azu

LEADERSHIP MESSAGE
Executive Director Deborah R. Fidel
Rabbi Hillel said, “Do not separate yourself from the community.” (Pirkei Avot, 2:4) Judaism is lived through community. Social distancing is simply foreign to our tradition. We pray with a minyan (10 people), say grace after meals with three and require two witnesses to a wedding. However, new circumstances require us to adapt in order to preserve life, our highest value of all. Our offices have been closed for a couple of weeks, but the incredible staff at Temple Shalom continue to serve this community remotely, at the same time as they are homeschooling their children and caring for their own families. I am grateful to each and every one of them for figuring out how to overcome every obstacle and challenge that being away from the office and each other presents. I miss having lunch with them every day and catching up at the water cooler and copy machine. Regularly scheduled Zoom meetings are not the same as being together in an office suite all day long, but it will have to do for the time being. I appreciate all that they are doing - Randi Butterworth, Maxine Gould, Shayna Aronson and Victor Lucas - each one has come back to me again and again, asking, “What more can I do? How can I help?” The word “no” seems to have disappeared from their vocabularies. Keeping this community connected is our priority, even though the regular work of the Temple has not stopped just because we are not there. For example, Jeanette Fischer has made sure that we are all connected remotely as a Temple community via the livestream, Zoom meetings and a plethora of virtual learning and spiritual experiences that the clergy have so quickly and expertly created. Julie Fischer has been scouring the internet for other remote activities to share with you and your family on Facebook. Ana Maria Tamargo is coordinating the One Family effort, led by Tussy Shnider and Bobbie Katz, to call every Temple member to check in on them, and assure that people who need a little extra help get matched to a volunteer. We encourage you to take advantage of the many activities our clergy are offering online, follow us on Facebook, check our website regularly for updates, read the weekly emails, and reach out to each other for support and companionship by phone, email, FaceTime, or Zoom. You may have a member directory that our Sisterhood provides every other year in your home with contact information, but there are a lot of new members who do not appear there. Did you know that you have an up-to-the-minute directory in your Temple Shalom account online? Did you know that there’s a Members Page with links to online events and programs? If you have not logged in yet, you will need to do that first (it’s easy). 1. Go to www.naplestemple.org 2. Click the gray login button in the upper right corner and click on Forgot Password. You will be prompted to enter your email address and click submit. 3. You will receive an email with a temporary password. Log in with that and then change to the password of your choice. 4. The membership directory is located in the Directory tab in the top menu bar. You can either search for a name or click on the letter. The Members Page is also located in the main menu bar. 5. If you need help, email Randi Butterworth at rbutterworth@naplestemple.org . This too shall pass, and the staff is here for you today, looking ahead to serve you tomorrow and preparing for the day after this crisis ends and we all return to our routines. Stay well, and please stay in touch with us and each other! L’Shalom, Deborah

WE ARE STRONG SECURITY CAMPAIGN We Are Strong Security Campaign Join us in creating a safer and more prepared Temple Shalom. Our world turned upside down in October 2018 with the shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh. That event brought into sharp relief the recent rise in hate crimes and anti-Semitic rhetoric across our nation and throughout the world. The subsequent shooting in Poway, California, the recent stabbing in Monsey, NY, and the continued rise of anti-Semitic attacks heighten our awareness of the situation around us. In Torah, we read of an insidious attack made by Amalek on the Israelites – targeting the weakest and most vulnerable members of their community. After the incident, Moses instructs the people that they must remember and never forget what has taken place. Our sages understand this to mean that we have an obligation to learn from past tragedies, and better prepare ourselves for the future. In light of current events, and with this teaching in mind, we have launched a special security campaign to pay for immediate infrastructure upgrades and to fund the ongoing expense of security officers at Temple Shalom. We aim to protect all of us – especially the children who represent our future. How can you help? We are focused on a proactive approach while ensuring that we have the best facilities, training, and protocols possible to keep our community safe and prepared. Providing enhanced security details as well as making structural changes will require significant resources. Please consider donating to our Security Campaign. Your contribution will help us ensure a safe and vibrant community for you, your family, friends and neighbors. Specific security needs have been identified, and you will have the opportunity to give toward those goals. However you choose to support this effort, know that your gift will make a positive impact – increasing the safety and security of all who enter our doors.
The time is now. Please join us by making a pledge today. Help us reach our goal of $200,000. L’Shalom,

Director of Preschool Susan Feld, Ed.S. Resilience Young children face new social and emotional challenges every day under the most ordinary circumstances, but these are extraordinary times. A closer look at resilience can guide us in how we support our children. Resilience is the ability to bounce back from stress, adversity, failure, challenges, and trauma. Children who are resilient are more likely to take healthy risks because they don’t fear falling short of expectations. Now that we find ourselves in the most unusual of circumstances, it’s crucial to support our littlest learners so that they can build resilience and continue to progress socially, emotionally, and academically. In addition to families, teachers play a significant role in helping children feel confident and support them as they build skills for resilience. At Temple Shalom Preschool, several of our objectives in the Creative Curriculum offer scaffolded instruction to help children cope with their own emotions and build resilience. These past few weeks children who are normally cheerful and active are isolated at home, without contact with their classmates. They may be confused and sense the stress of the loved ones around them. To engage with children and families, we are offering Zoom live authentic experiences to continue offering authentic learning experiences, to help parents create a scheduled time for an activity, and to foster interactions with their peers. In Harvard University’s resource, The Developing Child, we learn that, “The single most common factor for children who develop resilience is at least one stable and committed relationship with a supportive parent, caregiver, or other adult.” As our role shifts to virtual support, we are here to help the parents, the “first responders,” as they navigate the balancing act of working remotely and meeting the needs of their children at home. Our Temple Shalom Preschool teachers will continue to work alongside parents as children learn to label, express, and manage their emotions. Together, we can adapt to a new normal. 10
Our first suggestion to strengthen resilience comes from the author Mauren Healy, writer for the website Psychology Today. She says, “I have always personally and professionally witnessed people with regular spiritual practices (meditation, yoga, prayer, nature walks, and so on) to be stronger on the inside than those without. So if you want to grow your child’s resilience then add things that enliven his or her spirit or grow a deeper sense of connection and compassion for self and others”. Temple Shalom Preschool has already uploaded yoga poses specifically tailored for young children incorporated with meditation. Additionally, our weekly Shabbat gatherings have instilled the foundation of Jewish spirituality in our young students. Dr. Kelly Roy, our early childhood consultant from Florida SouthWestern College, says, “Children take their social and emotional cues from the adults around them. This is an opportunity to teach them to be positive in the face of struggles. They’ll learn to take initiative to find valuable ways to spend their time by having fun doing things together, learning new games, or enjoying unstructured playtime. Routine and consistency can support them in feeling secure so plan a daily routine together. Give them an opportunity for input. Include them in the cooking and other responsibilities to keep everyone healthy. Children are extremely resilient if they can count on just one person to be there for them in a loving and consistent way.” We’re looking forward to reopening our doors, so we can continue the sacred work of educating and caring for the children entrusted to us. L’Shalom, Susan Feld

Associate Regional Dir., North Florida Region Happy April from BBYO! Back in February, BBYO Naples participated in BBYO’s International Convention! Six Southwest Florida teens joined 3,000 Jewish teens from all over the world for a once-in-a-lifetime experience in Dallas, Texas. IC has become an unparalleled convening - offering a powerful, strategic and inspiring platform from which the best and brightest teen and adult leaders from across the Jewish world (and beyond) unite to celebrate, dream, and take action to continue strengthening the future. Dani Rudd, Anachnu Tamid N’Siah in Sarasota, said, “IC 2020 was an incredible and enriching experience. I loved the empowering and motivational speakers who made me feel like I can do anything I set my mind to. I can’t wait for IC 2021.” In February, BBYO Naples along with our BBYO Connect program for middle schoolers attended a Spring Training Baseball Game at Hammond Field in Ft. Myers. We took in an action packed game cheering on the Minnesota Twins and the Toronto Blue Jays that ended in a draw. Also in February, Naples BBYO participated in the Temple Shalom Purim Carnival. BBGs sold baked goods at the event and met many prospective members. Not a member yet of BBYO yet? You can register by going to this link: bit.ly/memberbbyo. CONNECT WITH US Our “Melton” Havurah By Susan Pittelman
Last spring, as our third-year Melton Class was preparing to graduate, many of us realized that when our class was over, not only would we miss this wonderful learning opportunity, we would also miss being with each other. After having studied together for nearly three years, we had developed a special bond. In order to both continue the opportunity to study with each other and to maintain the friendships that we have formed, 27 of us (including the spouses/partners of some of our classmates) formed a havurah. We very appropriately named it “The Melton Havurah” in honor of our Melton class having been its impetus! (We are grateful to Debbie Zvibleman and Ana Maria Tamargo for their assistance in helping us form our havurah.) Our first event, held last April, was a “mixology class” taught by Al and Roz Katz. After enjoying several cocktails(!), we had a pot-luck barbeque dinner at the Katz’s. In November 2019, we attended “One Day University,” hearing a lecture about George Washington by Prof. Louis Masur. Following the program, we enjoyed lunch together at Olympia Greek Restaurant. In December, we celebrated Chanukah with a potluck dinner hosted by Debby and Jeff Waranch; the evening included an interesting twist on the traditional “gift grab bag.” In February, we toured the Baker Museum led by Docent and Havurah Member Ellaine Rosen. Before the tour, we met for lunch at California Pizza Kitchen. (You will notice that we always manage to work in food!). On March 9, several of us gathered to bake hamantashen in celebration of Purim. Sadly, our plans to tour the Holocaust Museum as well as our end-of-year gathering in May have been postponed due to COVID-19. We were very fortunate that an elective Melton class was offered the year after we graduated, providing us with a ready-made way to study together. Beginning the fourth week of March, this class will be taught online, so that even as we “self-quarantine” most of the members of our havurah will continue to learn together. I think that I am going to suggest to the members of our havurah that we pick a date on which we will all bring in lunch and hold the next gathering of our Melton Havurah via Zoom!

B’nai Mitzvah Noah Kohn 4.4.2020
Noah is in the 7th grade at Gulfview Middle School. He is a first generation American within his family; with an Argentinean mom, an Ecuadorian dad, a Rumanian grandma, and a Czech grandpa. His cousins live in Spain, Norway, Argentina, Ecuador and Israel. Noah knows the world is all connected by the love family brings to his heart. When Noah is not asleep, he is playing tennis. He took his first tennis lesson when he was two. He reached #20 in Florida in his age category. Noah can play, among other things, Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata on the piano without having taken a single lesson. He can tell every single detail of Albert Einstein’s life as well as Mohammed Ali’s. Noah is extremely attached to his values and sees everything under that scope. He cannot be more happy and thankful to his great-grandparents who fought through so much adversity so he can be joined (virtually) by most of his family on such an important day.
David Heuer 5.2.2020 David is in the 7th grade at Community School of Naples. He is the son of Stephanie and Neil, and the brother of Alexis and Emerson. David is a kind, caring person who enjoys being with family and friends. He also enjoys playing tennis with his coach and teammates. He has a great sense of humor and is wise beyond his years.

MEN’S CLUB On behalf of the entire membership of the Men’s Club I want to wish everyone a Happy Passover. This year, the month of April is also the month that we are called to remember the past as we observe Yom HaShoah and commit to the present and the terrible numbers with respect to antisemitism. The Men’s Club will continue to work with groups representing all age demographics to strengthen the Jewish Community here and everywhere we can. We were delighted to have been part of the very successful Purim Carnival in March. All of the pizza was consumed. Kudos to everyone involved (the staff of the congregation and of the school, the clergy, as well as all of the volunteers) in the celebration. Our Dinner Theatre event was also a solid success. Thanks to Gene Katz and everyone else who worked so hard.
Men’s Club President Ron Yasbin
SISTERHOOD The primary mission of the Sisterhood is to promote the welfare of Temple Shalom and the religious education of its children. Sisterhood women come together for a common cause, which encompasses: • Promoting the welfare of Temple Shalom and its Religious School • Stressing Jewish ethical and religious practices in everyday living • Stressing the observance of the Sabbath and all Jewish festivals • Supporting and encouraging youth activities and affiliations • Engaging in civic and philanthropic activities Many of you have responded generously to our Count Your Blessings fundraiser. We thank you. If you have not already done so, please consider giving and help us to continue Sisterhood’s mission.
Sisterhood President
Karen Cohn
Count Your Blessings We thank those of you who have responded generously to this Sisterhood fundraiser. If you have not already given, please consider doing so. Your participation helps Sisterhood in its continued mission of supporting our Religious School and many other programs for our Temple and the Jewish community. 25
TIKKUN OLAM
Tikkun Olam Council Chair Ken Goldstein A Note of Thanks from Project Pink One of the new Mitzvah Day projects this year, Knitzvah for Mitzvah, combined a love for knitting and crocheting with doing a mitzvah. Prior to Mitzvah Day, volunteers will be asked to knit a shawl for breast cancer patients. These shawls were then donated to Project Pink. Below is the letter received from Natalie Matricardi, Project Manager for Project Pink. 3/16/20 Dear Liz, Thank you so much for your generous donation of shawls to our Project Pink. Your friend Judy Zwicker taught me all about Mitzvah Day...what a wonderfully, inspirational day. We are grateful that one of ‘your gifts of giving” was our project. Every newly diagnosed breast cancer patient that wraps themselves in your shawls will know that someone lovingly cares for them. Your lovely tag was attached to each shawl. Our project is very unique in that our hand made bags, shawls and pillows are all made locally and delivered locally. Please tell all of your knitters and chrocheters how grateful we are for their handiwork. The shawls are beautiful, the gesture is beautiful and we want to say thank you again, from the bottom of our hearts. Natalie Matricardi Project Manager for Project Pink
