President’s Report Submitted by: Neil Shnider, President of the Board of Trustees I would like to thank all the members of the Temple Shalom Family for making this past fiscal year a success. Just as we have been blessed with many generous members that have given the Temple financial security, we have also created an environment of engagement and connectivity among our members and the Jewish community at large. It is because of the complete involvement of the Temple Board of Trustees, the Clergy and the entire staff, that this was realized. I thank all of them for making these past two years challenging and enjoyable. The Temple has opened its doors to the many organizations within the secular and Jewish community and has been bustling with activity all year long. The One Family Initiative is going strong with new and exciting Affinity Groups being set up, new member involvement plans being developed and implemented, and an expanded initiative to make sure guests to our home are greeted with a warm welcome.

Some of the accomplishments of the past two years include: • The engagement of a new Director of Congregational Education.

• The creation of a new position on our staff, Engagement Coordinator & Concierge to enhance our members’ and prospective members’ experiences.

• The development of an intensive Member Recognition Program.

• The development of our Endowment and Planned Giving Program focusing on past, present and future Planned Gifts.

• The engagement of a new Executive Director.

• The continued development of the One Family Initiative with its focus on creating an environment and systems that provide opportunities for connection and engagement (see the One Family report for details).

• BALANCING OUR BUDGETS. We have been evaluating the various functional units of the Temple to understand how we can make sure we are meeting the needs of the membership and the community in our rapidly changing times. As the demographics change, we want to be certain that we stay contemporary from spiritual, programming, and engagement points of view. The leadership of the Temple, itself a very diverse group of people, are cognizant of the different needs of each segment of our membership. We are regularly evaluating those needs and are working to ensure that there is something for everyone.

This is not only a great time in the life of Temple Shalom but an exciting time of change, engagement, connectivity, and enrichment. Your involvement is key to the Temple’s success and for you to experience the excitement and energy that is taking place. We welcome your involvement in the aspects of Temple Shalom that interest you. We invite you to contact Board members and other leaders to let them know how you want to participate in Temple life.

Tussy and I very much appreciate being a part of this amazing congregation at this exciting time. We have developed many wonderful relationships that we hope will continue for many years to come. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve as your President.

Rabbi’s Report Submitted by: Adam F. Miller Dreams Fulfilled

“If You Will It, It is More Than a Dream” - Theodor Herzl

Theodor Herzl wrote those prophetic words in his diary near the end of the 19th century in reference to his Zionist dream for the modern state of Israel. What once seemed nearly impossible came to fruition fifty years later with the declaration of Israel’s independence in 1948. Dreaming big is what we have always done – even before the time of Herzl. Abraham and Sarah dreamed of building their family. Moses and the Israelites dreamed of freedom from servitude to Pharaoh. David dreamed of a kingdom that would unite the people of Israel.

Dreams live on in every generation. Fifty-four years ago, four families dreamed of one day having a vibrant Jewish community in Naples. Those families embraced Herzl’s words and formed the Jewish Community Center of Collier County.

What began as their dream is today known as Temple Shalom – a center for living Judaism, loving Judaism and sharing Judaism.

Over the course of the last year we have seen many dreams brought to fruition – including the dream for our talented staff at Temple Shalom. Having said farewell to Caren Plotkin, we welcomed our new Director of Education, Dr. Anna Salomon.

Dr. Salomon worked with me to revamp our adult education program, and we began the first Melton Center for Adult Learning program in Southwest Florida. A Temple Shalom exclusive! Classes on Jewish humor and the history of the American Jewish community were near capacity and more will be offered in the coming year. Dr. Daniel Matt inspired us through his teaching on Jewish mysticism as the Shirley and Henry Kraus Scholar in Residence, and Dr. Amy-Jill Levine filled the sanctuary in our joint program with the Naples United Church of Christ. Adult programming also expanded with the addition of Senior For ‘Em events.

Two years ago the dream of One Family began with the understanding that relationships are the key. Using this principle, and prioritizing the needs of the Temple members to feel connected, we added Alicia Browner in the new position of Membership Engagement. Many have already experienced her warmth and personal touch – in the way they have been greeted at the congregation, as well as her phone calls for birthday and anniversaries. Next year Alicia will be adding a series of community experiences and programs.

Halfway through the year, the leadership team further stabilized with the addition of Eli Montague at Executive Director.

Coming to Temple Shalom with more than 25 years’ experience in the field, Eli brings new perspective. Under his guidance we will further develop the One Family atmosphere.

Eli arrived just in time for our major event, which saw the vision of Stephanie Heuer, Neil Heuer, Veora Little and Dr. John Little come to fruition after a year of planning with the magnificent Dream On: A Night of Stars. I am grateful to the chairs, as well as to the dozens of volunteers who worked on the committees and behind the scenes to make that dream a reality. Thank you to all who attended and made the evening a sparkling success – including our special honorees Dr. Mark Rubin, Anne Rubin, Howard Solot and Janet Solot.

So many dreams were brought to life this year at Temple Shalom. We witnessed the arrival of our new High Holy Day prayerbooks, added iTemple, and most significantly started to livestream worship services and events. Countless individuals have expressed their great joy and wonder at being able to stay connected with Temple Shalom when away from Naples or when their health made it too difficult to attend experiences in person. Thank you to Stu Warshauer, Men’s Club and Sisterhood for taking this long held vision and making it reality.

May 2016 marks 13 years since my ordination from Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion. One of my dreams has been to develop the type of congregation exemplified by the Relational Judaism model – a sacred place where people feel deeply connected one to the other. For all of the reasons above, I saw that dream become a reality this year.

Most importantly, at two of the more difficult moments this year, I witnessed a packed sanctuary, and even social hall, full of people gathered together to mourn with and offer comfort to the Feldman and Waltzer families. Many in attendance created relationships within our Temple Shalom Preschool, Religious School, and through our Temple Family.

It is at all these moments and more that I am proud to be the rabbi at Temple Shalom. Our home. May we all be inspired to Dream On, and make even bigger dreams for Temple Shalom’s future become reality.

Cantor’s Report Submitted by: Donna M. Azu I’d like to start by thanking our senior staff Rabbi Miller, Seyla Cohen, Dr. Anna Salomon and Eli Montague for working together as a team in collaboration for a wonderful year. I’d also like thank our incredibly hard working staff who are often behind the scenes making everything come together seamlessly. Thank you Randi, Maxine, Jeanette, Alicia, Victor and Rick.

We appreciate all that you do for us!

It was an exciting beginning of the year kicked off by the High Holidays and the introduction of our new Machzor.

Our Adult choir, directed by Peter Lewis, sang beautifully and continued to inspire us with their music at Shabbat services throughout the year.

This year we had 17 students in our B’nai Mitzvah program. Our tutors Perry Switzen, Dr. Michael Rubner, Howard Moeckler, and Hari Jacobsen, are continuing to teach and contribute their time to the success of our students. In addition, we had four ladies who completed a year and a half of study and became Adult B’not Mitzvot in a beautiful service on March 19.

It’s a pleasure working with our children in the Religious School in different aspects, including 9th and 10th grade Confirmation, our 6th and 7th graders preparing for them for Bar and Bat Mitzvah in our blessings and prayers class, as well as school wide programs. Highlights included our Star Wars themed Purim Spiel and our children’s Chocolate Seder.

In the greater Collier County community, it was a pleasure to be involved involved in the Interfaith Thanksgiving service, JFCS Senior Center, Federation candle lighting at the Mercato, Chanukah Tea, community Yom HaShoah service, as well as PFLAG. I’m excited to share that we’ve already began meeting and planning for our second Cantor’s Concert, on March 5, 2017 – From Bimah to Broadway, Encore! I look forward to working with my incredible committee chaired by Nancy and Jack Wiadro.

As we end the year, I thank all of our volunteers as well as our Board of Trustees who give so much of their time to the temple. Your hard work and dedication helps to ensure the future of Temple Shalom. I look forward to another wonderful year with my Temple community!

Preschool Report Submitted by: Seyla Cohen This is the 26th year of Temple Shalom Preschool. We currently have 140 children registered in our preschool.

Temple Shalom Preschool has been acknowledged by local educators, prestigious publishers and parents as a top rated preschool in the Naples area.

Enrichment opportunities in science, music, technology, STEM, movement, art and storytelling are provided to children in the two, three and four year old classes. We are offering Spanish classes on Wednesdays from 2:00-3:00. Special activities and events include science days, story hour in Storyland, Safety Day, Super Family Shabbat, Mitzvah Day, Thanksgiving Feast, Chanukah Sing Along, Purim Carnival, Art Auction and Passover Seder. These events and holiday celebrations provide opportunities for family participation. Parent and community involvement is encouraged and parents volunteer for a variety of activities.

Professional training opportunities are provided for the staff by colleagues and invited guests. Some of the training classes were; Introduction to Early Childhood Education in a Temple Setting by Marjorie J. Kostelnik, Promoting Productive Home /School Communications by Seyla Cohen, What’s New in Technology by Jeremy Satterfield, Judaism in Early Childhood by ECE-URJ and Promoting Bike Safety by Jodi Walvorn. Teachers and the director work closely together, sharing ideas and strategies that support the education of young children.

Parents and children participate in fundraising activities that support enrichment opportunities. School t-shirts, school pictures, holiday workshops and the Parent Directory are some of our fundraisers. On May 5, 2016, we are having our annual TSP Art Show. This year’s theme is “It Takes a Village to Raise a Child”. We are so proud that this event made $30,000.00 last year. With money raised from the Art Show, we were able to enrich our school and purchase cafeteria tables, as well as, offer partial financial assistance to families. We are anticipating a huge success this year also.

Temple Shalom Preschool continuously participates in Mitzvah projects. We helped St Jude Children’s Hospital, the Humane Society, Abused Women’s Shelter, Homeless Children of Collier County, the Purple Bag Project and many more.

We are currently offering 7 weeks of summer camp in June and July. Camp Shalom is for children ages 2-4 and Camp Einstein, an academic summer camp program for children 5-8 years old. Summer camp hours and days are very flexible, which makes it easy for families to sign up their children. We get a lot of children from other schools.

They fall in love with TSP and end up signing up for the school year.

Congregational Education Report Submitted by: Dr. Anna Salomon RELIGIOUS & HEBREW SCHOOL This school year has ushered in several changes in the Religious School. Over the summer, we began work to implement a brand new curriculum for both Hebrew and Judaics. Our goal was to incorporate feedback received from parents and students, as well as ensure a vibrant and dynamic Religious School experience for all of our students. We also hired a whole slate of new Religious School teachers and one new Hebrew teacher this year. We were fortunate to have 23 Madrichim (teen assistants) this year, working hard and being positive role models for our students.New family programs and holiday experiences rounded out our year.

A few of our holiday highlights include Sukkot, Chanukah, Purim, and Passover. For Sukkot, we held our first ever Sukkot Food Truck Rodeo, bringing three delicious food trucks here for our dining pleasure. For Chanukah, we had a school-wide mitzvah project called “Bedtime Bundles.” Each class donated items that children would need for bedtime – pillows, pajamas, slippers, toothbrushes, hairbrushes, stuffed animals, story books, and more. These bundles were decorated by students and donated to Youth Haven (local youth shelter). Our school collected enough for 17 bundles! We ended our day with a dance party and latkes/sufganiyot (jelly donuts). The Purim Carnival was packed full of fun and featured several new activities. The chocolate seder returned for Passover, much to the delight of our K-3rd graders!

We also began a new FAMILY SHABBAT EXPERIENCE, bringing families together for dinner with Shabbat blessings, and a student-led sanctuary experience. This new format and earlier time proved to be a hit with our families. Each of the four events had 80+ people in attendance and a good time was had by all!

One significant change we implemented this year was the siddur (prayerbook) presentation moved to 3rd grade. Students are now receiving their prayerbooks earlier, and without transliteration, to help strengthen their experience with prayer and Hebrew. Families decorated special covers for the prayerbooks as a surprise for the students. Our students are now proudly learning to use their own siddur!

Our school year is wrapping up with a school-wide Maccabiah (color war) event that will include a talent show, trivia, and races. Stay tuned to see whether TEAM JERUSALEM or TEAM TEL AVIV will prevail!

Throughout the school year we have celebrated many b’nai mitzvot with our families. Mazel tov to the Marks, Johnson, Mellman, Paquette, Saad, Diamond, Isenberg, Gopman, Salomon, Mair, Jaffe, Braverman, McCarron, Zeitler, Nicolau and Goodwich families! Our Confirmation class is preparing for their special service (Friday, May 27th at 7 PM). Mazel tov to Max Ginsberg, Marlee Miller, Justin Singer, and Cameron Willits!

Looking forward to next year, we are planning to offer two choices for Hebrew class times – Wednesdays (4:45-6 PM) and Sundays (11:30-1:00 PM). This change will allow for greater participation among our families and meets a pressing need.

Religious School will remain on Sunday mornings, with a slight time change to 9-11 AM. Students in 8th-10th grade will experience a revitalized post b’nai mitzvah program, Journey. In this program they will have new travel options, Shabbaton retreats, and the opportunity to pursue their own interests as part of our Confirmation program.

The Religious School would like to give a huge thank you to Sisterhood, Men’s Club, and the Jewish Federation for all of the support each provides. We simply couldn’t do it without you!

ADULT EDUCATION Our adult education program was jam packed this year with wonderful learning opportunities for all. We are proud to be the exclusive provider for the Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning here in Naples. Our first two classes, Jews in America and Jewish Humor, brought a combined total of 35 learners together for ten weeks of learning. We also held our first “Taste of Melton” session, offering 32 adults the opportunity to try a Melton lesson and see what it’s all about. Our Scholar in Residence, Dr. Daniel C. Matt, created a weekend full of incredible learning and discussion about the Zohar. In partnership with Senior For’Em, Ellaine Rosen offered a three part lecture on art. Throughout the year we also welcomed a multitude of guest speakers, including Edwin Black and Dr. Amy-Jill Levine.

Looking forward to next year, we will be offering new Melton courses, a new complement of guest speakers, and engaging opportunities for adult learning.

Sisterhood Report Submitted by: Debra Antzis Sisterhood of Temple Shalom was formed 51 years ago with the primary goal of helping the Temple build a home. Sisterhood subsequently made supporting the Religious School its focus. The members of Sisterhood continue to generously give their time and financial resources to invest in our Temple and, even more importantly, in our children, who are the future of the Jewish people.

Over time, Temple Shalom Sisterhood has grown in number and responsibility. Our primary mission today is to promote the welfare of Temple Shalom and the religious education of our children.

Sisterhood women come together for friendship, education, fun, to increase Jewish awareness and to raise money to fulfill our mission. Temple Shalom Sisterhood: • Operates the Judaica Shop • Publishes the Temple Directory/ad book every two years • Holds gala luncheons and other fundraising activities • Hosts the multi-organization Chanukah Tea • Prepares shiva luncheons after internment • Holds a Women’s Seder • Presents a delicious Oneg Shabbat every Friday night • Prepares special “sponsored” onegs for Bar and Bat Mitzvah celebrations, baby namings, anniversaries, Board and Clergy installations and other Temple celebrations • and much, much more!

Additionally, Sisterhood continues to provide funds to our Temple where needed, including $50,000 to Shalom 2000 for the Learning Center wing of the Temple; $7,500 for the Temple’s new phone system; $5,000 for “Our Torah”; and $5,400 for Temple’s 50th Anniversary. Every other year Sisterhood provides $1,000 to support our students to visit the Religious Action Center in Washington, DC. This year alone, Sisterhood contributed $15,000 to the Religious School, $750 for Mitzvah Day, $2,500 for the Tribute Garden (with another $2,500 being paid in July), $1,530 for a washer and dryer, $1,500 to the Temple gala “Dream On,” $1,666 towards live streaming services and special events, and much more!

Fifty-one years after being founded, Sisterhood still has the same dedication to Temple Shalom that our Sarahs, Rebeccas, Rachels and Leahs of long ago had.

Membership Committee Report Submitted by: Bobbie Katz As of this writing, we have welcomed 35 new families to our congregation. They include a diverse group including families, associates, young families with children, singles, those who are retired and empty nesters. We have a total of 485 family member units as of the writing of this report.

The last Friday night in August 2015 we held a wine and cheese reception for new and prospective members before Shabbat services. It was the perfect opportunity to invite those who have an interest in Temple Shalom and welcome members who had joined since July 2015.

In November 2015 we held our annual Cabaret Night with NRG as the band. Everyone who attended had a wonderful time and it gave everyone a chance to hear the band that was hired for our major event in March 2016. It was a special evening to rekindle friendships, schmooze, dance and enjoy wonderful desserts.

In January, we held our Potluck Dinner before our new member Shabbat service. It is always a huge success and brings everyone together to share Shabbat. Rabbi Miller and Cantor Azu did a special blessing for our new members and everyone felt very special.

This year we welcomed 38 Seasonal Affiliates which included renewals and many new ones. In March we held a Potluck dinner which was something new this year and it was very successful. It truly made them feel a part of our One Family, and Rabbi Miller and Canor Azu did a blessing for the Seasonal Affiliates during Shabbat services.

This program is a wonderful way to have families join us during their time in Naples.

We are still meeting and greeting on Friday nights and we encourage the visitors to where name tags so we can greet them at the Oneg Shabbat. We also ask our visitors to sign in at the welcome information table so we can email them and a follow–up is made, which is appreciated by the visitor.

Our name tags have been very successful and we keep up to date on new members and new seasonal affiliates.

I want to thank the members of the committee: Anita and Phil Freeman, Marilyn Dano, Jan and Shelly Whitman, Mark Malone, Nancy and Jack Wiadro, Gene Helfand, Debbie Zvibleman, Susan and Joel Pittelman, and Tussy Shnider.

Caring Committee Report Submitted by: Bobbie Katz The Caring Connection Committee has been involved with the congregation for several years. The purpose of this committee is to reach out to our Temple Family in times of bereavement, in times of happiness, and in times of connecting with each other.

Carole Greene sends out notes to the B’nai Mitzvah families and the children wishing them a Mazel Tov. We also send out notes for special occasions such as a milestone birthday, anniversary or a special honor someone in our Temple has received.

Sherry Spielman is involved with making sure there are enough people for a Shiva Minyan and also attending a funeral of a congregant. She has a large committee who is available to help out.

Barbara Cohen and Elli Taylor send out notes to people who are on the Mi Shebeirach list to see how they are doing and if they need any meals from the Caring Connection. Personal phone calls are also made to make a connection with people on the Mishebrach list.

Nancy Brown and Harriet Lickhalter are in charge of making sure if someone needs a meal, we can provide that for them.

This year, we started to send out notes to these who have lost either a family member or friend. Judy Picus has been sending the notes and they have been well received.

Phil Freeman has been visiting our members in the hospital and reports this information to the Rabbi and Cantor.

The Caring Connection is an important part of our Temple family and our One family initiative.

One Family Initiative Report Submitted by: Tussy Shnider, Neil Shnider, Bobbie Katz & Alicia Browner The One Family Initiative is based on the concepts developed by Dr. Ron Wolfson in his book Relational Judaism: Using the Power of Relationships to Transform the Jewish Community. Our One Family goals are…

• To increase connectivity and engagement among our members • To build and develop relationships for old, new, and potential members • To create an intergenerational bridge These goals do not mandate that our Team develop more programs, rather that we develop systems to assist our members in connecting and engaging and that we create an environment conducive to connectivity and engagement. New programs may well develop, and they have, but the focus of Relational Judaism is creating the environment that promotes connectivity and engagement. In order to accomplish this, we have integrated One Family efforts with existing Temple committees to develop a number of action initiatives. The following initiatives have either been implemented or are in development: Name Badges – The badges have been well received; our members have become accustomed to wearing them in the building and returning them to the cabinet as they leave. Seasonal affiliate badges have been made and are available for use.

Clip-on or lanyard style name badges are now in use for guests.

Shabbat Dinners – Those who have hosted or attended home-held Shabbat Dinners have reported very positive experiences. They report meeting new people, developing new relationships, and strengthening existing friendships. A new, visible depiction of these dinners will be on display in the hallway near the Perman Library.

New Member Engagement -- This year, in addition to the annual New Member Potluck Shabbat Dinner in January, an orientation program was held in December to give our new members an opportunity to meet with our clergy, professional staff, and administrative staff. The program featured a tour of the building including the school areas, office areas, library, chapel, sanctuary, social hall, and kitchen. In addition, our Membership and Engagement Coordinator, a member of our Temple staff (see description below), has been in contact with the new members to help integrate them into the congregation. New members from last fiscal year and this year are also among the congregants being included in this year’s one-on-one conversations (see Many Stories below).

Seasonal Affiliate Engagement – A Seasonal Affiliate Potluck Shabbat Dinner was held in March. It has been suggested that this event be held earlier in the winter season next year to give the Affiliates an opportunity to meet one another closer to their arrival in Southwest Florida.

Affinity Groups – Two groups are forming – Senior Singles and Empty Nesters. Both groups have identified likely congregants who might want to participate, held meetings, discussed possible program ideas, and planned and held events.

Techie Tutors –The iTemple platform (see below), now available to the whole congregation, provides a great opportunity for members to connect. It is likely that many of our members will require assistance in using this platform. The Techie Tutor structure will be used to provide this assistance. Currently, members of the congregation who are users of technology are being sought to be trained as “tutors” to lead workshops for Temple members requesting assistance. The tutors will be trained by our Director of Communications, Jeanette Fischer, and the workshops will be organized through the Techie Tutor structure.

Many Stories – This initiative began forming in Spring and Summer of 2015 with training workshops for potential volunteer callers. Each caller was asked to call four to six members of the congregation, set up a meeting time and place for the purpose of engaging in one-on-one conversations. The discussions were to include the sharing of stories, interests, passions, and ideas for Temple activities. The purpose of these conversations is to create new relationships, strengthen existing relationships among our members, and to identify needed areas of programming. New members beginning July 2015, were among those called. More volunteers are needed to initiate the one-on-one conversations. To date, callers have reported good experiences and have identified two main programming needs – an organized social action structure and programs for interfaith families (now being explored). There is a need to collate and record the information obtained from the one-on-one conversations.

Perman Library – This space was reconfigured and redecorated to be not only the home of our lending library, but the location of the Temple Bean, our coffee station. It is designed to be connection friendly, with seating conducive to conversation and engagement.

Tribute Garden – The creation of the garden area adjacent to the Social Hall, presented to the congregation last Fall, is a welcome improvement to the front of our building. The garden is expected to be a space for meditation and quiet conversation. Possible additions to the garden are plants, benches, and engraved brick walkways, all of which can be used as stimulators for fundraising.

Technology Additions – • Streaming Video – The recording of events taking place in the sanctuary was used for the first time for High

One Family Initiative Report continued Holiday services 2015. The services were made available through the Temple website and were viewed by those unable to attend our services. Any event taking place in the sanctuary can be recorded and archived. The recordings can be made available through the website or can be closed and designated for a specific group. The reports from those who have viewed events from the website have been extremely favorable, being very much appreciated by those who were not in town at the time of the event and by those who were unable to attend due to illness.

• iTemple – This internet platform, available only to Temple members, is designed as a member-driven system of connection and communication. Members sharing a similar interest (such as golf, needlework, books, etc.), special interest groups (such as committees, religious school class parents and teachers, Temple Board, etc.) can connect and communicate using this platform. For nearly a year, iTemple has been in use by some Temple groups to identify program parts that need adjustment. iTemple was made available to the entire congregation in February.

• The Hearing Loop – This hidden wire loop (to be installed in the sanctuary shortly at the time of this writing) is designed to be used by hearing impaired individuals using hearing aids equipped with a telecoil. Loop technology enhances the experience of individuals with hearing loss by providing sound as it is transmitted from the microphone and amplified using the specifications of their own hearing aid. Plans are under way to demonstrate this technology to those who can benefit from it’s use.

Hospitality Hosts (previously referred to as Ambassadors) – A recent addition to the One Family Initiative is the plan for welcoming members and visitors to our Temple home for Shabbat services and events. On a weekly basis, in addition to the Shabbat Greeters located either outside the front door or inside the lobby as attendees enter, Hospitality Hosts will be placed at locations on the front walk, at the table where visitor name badges are available, at the cabinet where members name badges are kept, and in the sanctuary. They will welcome attendees, assist with name badges, introduce newcomers to other attendees, assist with seating, and locate prayer books as needed. Even though all of our members are encouraged to be inclusive at the Oneg, the Hospitality Hosts will be specifically responsible to ensure that no one is alone as we gather and schmooze. In other words, the goal is to make certain that everyone who attends services and events at Temple Shalom has a warm welcome, a sense of inclusion, and a “friendly” experience.

All of the above initiatives were accomplished with donated funds from our generous members. Every initiative was led and implemented by congregant volunteers.

Strengthening Relationships In order to ensure that the connections are made, that there is follow-through with every effort to connect congregants with each other, with Temple, with our staff, the new position of Membership and Engagement Coordinator has been developed. This staff member, Alicia Browner, is often the first contact visitors have with the Temple.

She is a friendly and welcoming presence is a positive first impression as she answers phones, greets people as they enter the building, and introduces visitors to other staff members and congregation leaders. In addition, Alicia follows up on all membership inquires, helps to orient new and potential members with the surrounding community, promotes new and existing members to make connections with other congregants, and contacts members on their birthdays and other simchas by providing consistency in these initial contacts and relationship building, Alicia as a staff member, makes certain that the emotional connections take place, therefore there is less likelihood that the desired relationships will “fall through the cracks.”

Development of Relational Judaism at Temple Shalom is well under way. As we continue this process, we are also promoting the concept of Audacious Hospitality as presented by Rabbi Rick Jacobs, President of The Union for Reform Judaism. The purpose of Audacious Hospitality is “to eliminate the barriers that have prevented people from finding their place in Judaism.” It is “about more than being a lovely host. It is being ‘an organization that thinks outside the box’ in order to allow people to participate and feel they are making a difference.” Audacious Hospitality is an environment that includes much of what we are endeavoring to create…

• A warm welcome to our Temple home.

• Reaching beyond active Temple members to less involved members and the unaffiliated, promoting engagement and connection.

• Respect for clergy, staff, and each other.

• Openness to new ideas and doing things in new ways.

Becoming a model of Relational Judaism and an example of Audacious Hospitality is a process – it evolves over time, with purpose, with planning, with persistence. It requires support of leadership, involvement of membership, and clarity of vision. As we move forward with this effort, we welcome the participation of everyone who wants to be (more) involved in this sacred community.

Buildings & Grounds Committee Report Submitted by: Michael Diamond 2015-2016 was a productive year for the Building and Grounds Committee at Temple Shalom. During the summer of 2015, the social hall front terrace area was transformed into the Temple Shalom Tribute Garden. Through the generous support of the Temple Shalom Brotherhood, Temple Shalom Sisterhood, and the Jaffe, Braverman, Sissman and Heuer Families, the Tribute Garden was conceived and constructed. Dirt Devil Grading, Inc., Allied Pavers Inc., Sunset Landscapes and Freedom Aluminum all contributed their labor and materials at reduced cost to the Temple working under the direction of Victor Lucas and myself. The garden was indeed a labor of love. We were fortunate to have the support of the board to be able to implement such a breathtaking transformation.

In addition to the Garden project, a new hearing loop system will be installed in the sanctuary in the Spring to assist those hearing-impaired Congregants. This was a project spearheaded by Tussy Shnider and Iris Shur.

Finally, under Victor Lucas’ excellent stewardship, Victor and his dedicated team have staffed our events and kept operations running smoothly. Victor continually assesses building and grounds issues that arise and dutifully implements the necessary repairs.

With the recent addition of Eli Montague as Executive Director, the Building and Grounds Committee has its sights set on a number of projects for 2016-2017. One such project will be the implementation of a security plan, recommended by the Collier County Sheriff’s Department to safeguard the Temple and its Congregants. Another is the introduction of plantings and benches within the aforementioned Tribute Garden and the continued care and upkeep of the Temple and its grounds.

Endowment Committee Report Submitted by: Suzanne Low The endowment committee is pleased and proud to take the opportunity of our annual meeting to update you on our progress since beginning our revitalized endowment and planned giving campaign in June 2014.

• We established the Temple Shalom General Endowment Fund (TSGEF) at the Community Foundation of Collier County (CFCC) for cost-effective administration and management o Initial $5,000 investment resulted in $5,000 “matching grant” (restricted use only) for Temple Shalom o Transferred $89,000 Abramson Endowment Fund to CFCC o Two new named endowment funds created by individual donors with $115,000 new money in o Endowments are being continually augmented by family and other gifts, including tributes o This brings total Temple endowments at CFCC to over $200,000 o Total Temple endowment funds are now over $500,000 • Verified previously indicated planned gifts totaling $1.2 million in current values • So we have reached 17% of our $10 million, 10 year goal for endowments and planned giving to date, as we begin our major drive for Fiscal Year 2016-2017 • Designed Endowment & Planned Giving programs based on Temple Strategic Plan • Eternal Light Society established for completed Endowment Gifts of over $10,000 - recognized in new video display in foyer • Developed naming opportunities list of Temple facilities and endowed chairs, with assigned dollar values • Designed endowment and planned giving messages and created premier marketing brochure, For Now and Forever o Brochure appears on website under donate button o Brochure distributed to event attendees, Board members, Committee members o Brochure available at various Temple locations, including entry foyer, library, religious and preschools, oneg table (Alicia Browner, Concierge, ensures that these are filled) o Brochures are being provided to professional advisors, others as requested • Held two high level, well-received information/social events at homes of Temple leaders, for potential donors and thought leaders • Committee members pledged 100% participation in current endowment giving • Assisted in developing recognition criteria for endowment, planned giving, and cumulative lifetime and other major gift categories • Publishing monthly Voice articles in Endowment Corner, explaining program and opportunities for giving, illustrating, educating, inspiring

Social Action Committee Report Submitted by: Ken Goldstein While social action has long been an important part of the fabric of our Temple, last October several members spoke and felt we needed a more formal way to help coordinate our many social action activities. That discussion resulted in the formation of the Tikkun Olam Council (TOC).

The TOC mission statement, as approved by the Board, was “to assist in, enhance and advance opportunities for members of all ages of Temple Shalom to participate in and fulfill their obligations of Tikkun Olam and of promoting Social Action and Social Justice,” and was intended to “complement one of Temple Shalom’s broader goals of seeking to involve members of all ages in serving and empowering those in need and who are disadvantaged.

Our objective has been to seek ways to expand beyond existing activities such as our once a year Mitzvah Day, the blue BOGO Food Bags, the Harry Chapin Food Bank Yom Kippur donation drive, the many Caring Committee activities and the civic and philanthropic Sisterhood and Mens Club activities.

In that connection, over the past several months the TOC has been seeking worthy initiatives that might generate support from the congregation. It has been a slower process than we had hoped for in terms of attracting committee members, project ideas and, most of all, finding members who are interested in becoming involved in social action.

We have initiated one new Temple Project, namely working with the Harry Chapin Food Bank. Several Temple Shalom members have already volunteered multiple times at either the warehouse in Naples or at the mobile food pantry which brings the food to various locations in Collier County. We intend to encourage Temple Shalom members to join us the fourth Friday of each month to pack food bundles at the Harry Chapin warehouse in Naples.

The session lasts three hours, from 12:00-3:00 PM. What a great way to start Shabbat! The first Temple Shalom Food Bank day will be on Friday May 27th.

The TOC will continue to explore other initiatives and projects such as working with the Immokalee farm workers or with the Jewish Federation and Community Services, as well as any others brought to our attention by the Temple membership.

The TOC is committed to growing and strengthening the values of tikkun olam and we will continue to look for new ways to encourage participation in social action events and activities. Our goal is to be able to paint a more substantial success story at the 2017 Temple Shalom Annual Meeting.

New Board Member biographies Debra Antzis A graduate of Brooklyn College and Georgetown University Law Center, Debra practiced law in New York City for 12 years, first at Simpson Thacher and Bartlett, and then in-house at MetLife. Debra and her husband moved to Naples 11 years ago, and have two daughters, aged 15 and 10.

Bruce Graev Bruce lives fulltime with his wife Nancy on Marco Island. They moved to Marco Island in 2011 from Princeton, NJ. They have been members of Temple Shalom since 2014. Prior to joining Temple Shalom, they were members of The Jewish Congregation of Marco Island. Bruce currently serves on the Temple Shalom Endowment Committee. He is a Certified Financial Planner and Wealth Advisor in his own firm, Bruce Graev Financial Associates. He is actively involved in the community serving on the boards of The Marco Island Center for the Arts, The Marco Island Historical Society, The Rotary Club of Marco Island and The Cultural Alliance of Marco Island and Goodland and in the larger “community” on The Cornell University Council. In the past, he has served on the boards of Temple Beth El, Hillsborough, NJ, Congregation Beth Chaim, West Windsor, NJ, Temple Beth El, Spring Valley, NY, The Boys and Girls Club of Trenton, NJ, and The Cornell Class of 1972. Because of his experience serving on not-for-profit boards, he is passionate about the need for endowment funds in order to ensure the sustainability of these not-for- profit organizations.

Perry Switzen Perry and his wife Rosalie are full time residents of Naples having moved from Long Island NY ten years ago.

He is a retired teacher who worked for the NYC Department of Education after graduating college. Perry was ‘discovered’ via Jewish geography, when a Temple Shalom member read his new member bio in The Voice, called a relative who belonged to the same Long Island temple as Perry and heard about all his temple activities. A call to Perry followed soon after. Perry is a Hebrew Teacher in our religious school, a B’nai Mitzvah tutor (trained 66 students so far), a Gabbai for Shabbat mornings and the High Holidays, and a member of the Temple Shalom Worship Committee. “I was able to sit in the back of the sanctuary unknown, for one Shabbat.” said Perry.

Perry’s recent major project for the Worship Committee was the presentation to the committee the need for replacing the over forty year old High Holiday prayer books. Reform Judaism had evolved and new books were needed. As part of his presentation, Perry explained that by purchasing the prayer books quickly, the Temple would receive a forty percent discount in price. This made Rosalie very proud of Perry, as she never buys retail.
