From Our Clergy..

NOTES OF SPIRITUAL NOURISHMENT Who could have imagined last year at this time where we would be this year? And yet, here we are thrust into a world and a life that has demanded adapting, adjusting, and too much time spent without the physical presence of many cherished friends and family in our lives. How have we coped with this different, and for many, difficult existence? I think about the image the Psalmists created of when we walk through deepest darkness. They said, “I do not fear, for You are with me.” For them, that may have meant God. Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, of blessed memory, taught that the phrase “you are with me” can also mean one another. Though we may be separated by our physical presence, the sight of so many faces on Zoom studying, laughing, praying, and conversing together has brought me nourishment, sustenance and support. I hope these experiences have helped you as well.

In the book of Jeremiah, the prophet likens the people of Israel to the olive tree - "God called your name a green olive tree, attractive and with impressive fruit." (Jer. 11:16) Why the olive? The tree is quite beautiful, the fruits (with lots of salt and time) are delicious but is that the true essence of our people? The rabbis teach that just as olives are beaten down from the tree, placed in the mill, pressed by heavy stones before finally producing oil, so too Israel: human life is challenging, heavy, even dangerous - but through experience we get to what is truly valuable. When we as Jews experience hardship, our traditions, community and incredible hope helps us grow resilient, to persevere, and thrive. The miracle of Hanukkah this year is not that the oil long ago lasted for 8 days - but rather, that we are each fine oil, shining brightly for 8 months (and counting) - growing stronger and more resilient day by day.

My hope is that we all dedicate some energy this winter towards celebrating the small victories of life. Whatever small thing feels like a disproportionate struggle, rejoice in the triumph of completing that task! Mitzvah goreret mitzvah, one good act will bring about another. The same can be said for positive energy and forward momentum. Remember, after December 21, we climb back up towards spring. One day and one step at a time.

"When this is over, may we never again take for granted: a handshake with a stranger full shelves at the store conversations with neighbors a crowded theater friday night out a routine checkup the school rush each morning coffee with a friend the stadium roaring each deep breath a boring tuesday life itself. When this ends may we find that we have become more like the people we wanted to be we were called to be we hoped to be and may we stay that way -- better for each other because of the worst."

When Adam and Eve encountered their first sunset outside of the garden, they were terrified. They had never experienced darkness before. To address this liminal moment in their lives - the ancient rabbis write into their hands the ritual of Havdalah and once they are holding a flame, they recite: Thank you, O Source of Light for this sacred light! In another reading of the story, the rabbis put into Adam’s hands two flint stones - such that with Eve’s help, they learn how to spark fire themselves. And so they faced the darkness with agency and purpose. But the rabbis take it a step further; they offer that if you are without a candle or a match, lacking the right materials to spark light, then you can bless the bright glow of the stars. And if you can’t see the stars because they are eclipsed by more darkness or by your struggle to see - then, then you can bless even the rocks on the ground. And why? Because they wanted us to know that even if we don’t have everything we want or need right now - we can still bless whatever it is we have. These are hard, painful, lonely, dark times, but the blueprint of our tradition since the dawn of time offers us a gift. Whether a cup of coffee, an evening walk, a playlist, poem, or a moment of breath, whether Shabbat candles or the Havdalah spice: rediscover an item, a person, an idea, a ritual - hourly, daily, weekly or monthly. Place it in your own hands, offer thanks, and create your own sparks.

How wonderful that our Festival of Light comes in the darkest month of the year. We have all been through a lot these last months, with much to reflect on and much to celebrate. I want to add one more expression of gratitude to our incredible clergy and staff who made our High Holy Day celebrations so meaningful and joyous. We pray for the time we will be able to safely gather back in person, but for now we will continue to innovate online, connect virtually, and reach out to each other in every safe way.

Our #10 Days10 Ways campaign during the High Holy Days renewed our focus and commitment to AntiRacism and our Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion efforts at Temple Israel. As Rabbi Zecher reminds us, this is not a program, this is a return to our core Jewish values and a step in our continuous march to be a more Just people. We will never finish this work, but we will always be engaged in such righteous acts.

Another thank you to our clergy, who saw our need in early November to refocus on hope and connection, even those with whom we disagree. Through a series of small group conversations, they helped many of us focus on the good around us and on the civility of conversation, good listening and even meditation. Our newest clergy team member, Cantor Alicia Stillman, jumped right into this, just as she has with everything else we do at Temple Israel. It is hard to believe we only welcomed her into our community in July and she was more properly “installed” in October. We are thrilled to have Cantor Stillman and her family join our Temple Israel family. Even in these difficult times, hope and success surrounds us. Congratulations to Beacon Academy on the acquisition of their new home. We are proud of how we have helped them grow to this monumental step in their journey and in their work. After 27 years as the Founding Director of the FJECC, Helen Cohen will graduate to her retirement, although she has committed to attending more Center for Adult Jewish Learning classes with all her soon to be “free time.” And Shabbat Tzedek, our annual celebration of both Dr. Martin Luther King and our commitment to seeking justice in our community, is just around the corner in January. Thank you all for being part of our Temple Israel family. We sustain each other as we keep Temple Israel strong and vital, even in the short daylight of winter days. The challenges that 2020 has brought were certainly surprising, but I am proud to say that Temple Israel has navigated through the pandemic by seeking the opportunities before us. We have connected in new and creative ways; we have created new programs; and we have even been able to keep our facility in use and supporting our mission. From our beloved FJECC Preschool to Beacon Academy, Fresh Food Generation and small life cycle ceremonies, we are carefully and safely gathering in our building in limited ways. As sciencebased guidance allows us to come together more frequently in the future, the staff of TI looks forward to being there to welcome you in person. Dan Deutsch Executive Director

I want to thank our COVID-19 Reopening Advisory Team, which includes lay volunteers Frank Friedman, Marc Draisen, Laurence Bailen, Marc Maxwell, Kate Ginnis, Ben Linas; they have been instrumental in helping us assess and plan for our path forward. We meet regularly to continue to refine our approach and adapt to the changing world. This team is a prime example of how our congregants regularly give the gift of their expertise and talent. Everything that we’re doing right now – virtually and in our building – takes additional resources. This year, more than ever, we are relying on the generosity of our community to help support our financial needs through our annual Friends Fund Campaign. If you have already been able to give a gift above your annual membership, we thank you with extreme gratitude. If you have not yet made an additional contribution, we ask that you give a gift from the heart and join the hundreds of households who have already contributed. No gift is too small! We have kept our aggressive annual fundraising goal of $500,000 this fiscal year and ask for your continued support. Finding Community During Covid-Era High Holy Days By Rabbi Jen Gubitz and Nicole Zador

"This year, the High Holy Days, brought about a profound shift in what defines community and holiness." In this COVID-19 era, where it is difficult to know what day it is, the Jewish calendar keeps moving forward maintaining a sacred rhythm for our lives. For the Riverway Project community, the High Holy Days offered us an incredible space for reflection, self-evaluation, and communal gathering that we so desperately needed. And, of course, we had to do it differently. For tashlich, the ritual throwing away of sins, we went kayaking (a kayak is 6 feet long, the perfect length to ensure social distancing). Going out on the water with a series of tashlich reflections and birdseed, everyone was apart, yet they were also experiencing it together. The High Holy Day Leadership Squad brought together 12 community members to serve as Zoom Ushers ("UsherZ"), service leaders, and musical voices. We gathered for Riverway Confessional, which was a power hour of prayer encompassing all the themes of Yom Kippur. We moved from an alphabet of woe to a crowd-sourced alphabet of wow - acknowledging our communal mistakes and our hopes for the future. For Sukkot, we gathered with Rabbi Gubitz at local parks to shake the lulav and etrog and truly live in the impermanence of the holiday. And for Simchat Torah, we heard from five community members about their relationship to Torah and Judaism. This year, the High Holy Days, brought about a profound shift in what defines community and holiness. They affirmed that we are not alone; that there are others with us even if they canâ€™t be sitting by our side.

TIkkun Central’s invitation to engage in cheshbon ha’nefesh through social justice

"Our family truly enjoyed participating in the 10 Days Campaign. My wife and I have spent some time thinking about how we could put our Jewish values into action, especially in light of everything that has happened this year, and this campaign gave us the perfect opportunity to have little "mini-sessions" of teaching, learning and insight, ones that we could share with our kids and ones that will hopefully influence their thinking for the future. The kids were attentive, asked wonderful questions and are becoming more aware of the world around them, what is happening in it and how they can positively impact others. We hope to participate in a similar campaign again in the near future." - Adam Marks

"The power of #10days10ways was in the stories told each day by fellow congregants. Sixteen brave souls stepped forward to tell a deeply personal story about working for social justice, and/or experiencing racial injustice. A few of the stories about racial injustice involved incidents at our beloved Temple Israel. Some stories were tough to hear, and I can only imagine how difficult they were to tell. They reminded me of my privilege as a white, cisgender, heterosexual Ashkenazi Jew in ways that could not have been more emotional, authentic, and meaningful. Thanks to the #10days10ways storytellers, I could begin my cheshbon ha’nefesh by examining my role in perpetuating the dominant culture--both at TI and in the greater community." - Susan Ridker

"White supremacy is so ingrained in our system that it is often invisible to me, as a white Jew. I am working hard to understand and combat these toxic dynamics, and the #10Days10Ways Facebook group helped to shine a light on some of the places where white supremacy rears its ugly head. It helped me understand the experiences of Jews of color at Temple Israel, and why it was the wrong decision for another local synagogue to have a panel on Jews and Race between Deval Patrick and Rabbi Pesner without including a Jew of color. When I first saw the description of the event, this critique, embarrassingly, did not occur to me. I am so appreciative of all the people who took the time to explain why it was ill-advised to have a public conversation about Jews and race without Jews of color heavily involved and featured. I also appreciated the group members who publicly expressed that they had changed their thinking after reading those comments and was delighted to see that the event organizers made changes in response to the thoughtful feedback." - Lauren Milgroom "Temple Israel's #10Days10Ways campaign during the High Holy Days had a significant impact on me. I was so appreciative of the substantial time and thought that went into creating the videos, personal essays, art projects, and more that were featured in the daily emails. I really missed the joy of seeing everyone in person for the High Holy Day services, but my wistfulness was offset by the incredible insights shared by fellow congregants, especially Bea Wilderman and Ram Solanki. My eyes have really been opened! I knew we are a diverse congregation, but I had never heard of "Hinjews" before! I now appreciate much more deeply that I need to really make an effort to get to know the people I meet at temple before making any assumptions of any kind and be sure to really listen to their life stories. Going forward, I hope TI will continue to share these videos and essays, as it would be very helpful to hear examples of conversations where our Black and brown congregants felt seen, heard, and validated, as well as situations that we can all learn from. Temple Israel Mentor Connections Program By Rachel Alexander Five months ago, I had never heard of “one-on-ones.” This summer, they became the highlights of my day. As part of my Temple Israel Social Justice Internship, I engaged in a series of one-on-ones with social justice leaders and young adults in the Temple Israel community. The justice work spearheaded by TI leaders constantly inspired me, and I found comfort in sharing feelings of frustration and passion with my peers. When I started to develop a long-term project, I used these experiences with one-on-ones as the foundation. How could I best use TI’s resources to help others? How could I relieve feelings of uncertainty in this stressful time? Through working with Tali Puterman, the Assistant Director of Social Justice Engagement, I organized a core group of social justice leaders to help me with my project. I initially brainstormed a social justice project that allowed people with similar justice passions to engage in conversation and build connections. However, after hearing about the similarities in what my friends Jack Pierce, Callie Rabinovitz, and I were feeling (confused, anxious about the future, seeking inspiration, etc.), the plan shifted. The “TI Mentor Connections Program” was born as we recognized the value of connecting young adults to social justice leaders with similar justice interests. I made a list of current RYFTI students/alumni. Jack, Callie, and I reached out to those we knew, and slowly the list of mentees increased. I worked with Tali, Fran Godine, and Susan Michaels (the other leaders on this project) to contact leaders in the community whose interests matched those of the students. We created space for 28 mentors/mentees to connect over shared passions, with many interested in participating again. Going forward, I hope to continue finding innovative ways to build relationships within the TI community. When so many of our members are deeply passionate, thoughtful, and open-minded, the possibilities for future programs are endless.

A "Construction-Mitzvah" in Vermont By Jessica Baron

As April marched towards May in the Spring of 2020, life stayed on pause amid the COVID-19 pandemic. It quickly became clear that we could not host a Bar Mitzvah in Boston on May 30. Although our son, Asher, was disappointed, he was not surprised. The clergy worked diligently to reschedule the Spring mitzvahs and balance individual family wishes. Surely by October 3, 2020 everything would be normal again right? Our lives have all continued their unsteady shift. Everything looks a little bit different. We realized by early August that life was not returning to normal anytime soon. Rabbi Zecher was very supportive and offered a variety of solutions. As we realized that Asher would not be able to read directly from the Torah, would need to quarantine before returning to school, and that most of his friends and family couldn’t join us in person; a Zoom-mitzvah was becoming the clear solution. We sat Asher down for the more difficult conversation that his Bar Mitzvah was not just postponed, but going to look completely different than he had thought. Asher shared, “I just want my Bar Mitzvah to feel special." We are building a new home and although it would not be complete, Asher could stand on a porch and lead the service. Grandparents and a few local friends could watch physically distant on the grass below. Asher could Zoom out to all of his friends and family across the United States. As the day approached, we scrambled to get the technology to cooperate and asked guests to bring their own chairs and wear mud boots for the "Construction-Mitzvah." The ceremony was chilly. There was an intermittent drizzle, but Asher’s face was full of sunshine and pride as he chanted his portion. Rabbi Zecher asked us to pause several times and scroll through the pages of Zoom. It warmed our hearts to see all the smiling faces as page after page on Zoom held our loved ones. We truly felt like our friends and family were with us. This experience led us to focus more on the meaning of the Bar Mitzvah. Asher truly understood what it meant to be a community member and how to take care of his community by his actions.

Creative and Safe In-Person Programming for the Religious School and Teen Communities By Roberta Axeloons and Fallon Rubin This Fall, the Temple Israel Education Team has continued innovating, re-designing, and staying-in touch with the needs of our community in real-time since March. When it became clear to us over the summer that safe, in-person programming could be designed, our team began thinking. In what ways could we support our students with in-person learning and connection to community? How could the clergy and educators keep students safe? What might we need to change or adapt in order to meet face to face?

Havurot: Jewish Wilderness School This Fall, the Religious School launched Havurot: Jewish Wilderness School. Since then, weâ€™ve had small group learning each Saturday at the Muddy River. Our students meet in person, for outdoor, wilderness Shabbat learning. The group began by celebrating Sukkot Shabbat and building mini-sukkot. On a cold and rainy Saturday, the students engaged in a lesson on spirituality and warmth (fire). Wilderness Havurot meet in the rain, snow, sleet, or sun. Our new motto is: thereâ€™s no bad weather, just bad gear. We are excited to welcome students to new groups and drop in programs throughout the Winter. Questions about the program? 7th Grade Kallah We had our first ever hybrid 7th grade Kallah. We met in person on Friday night for a Flashlight Qabbalat Shabbat. We used the light to welcome in Shabbat and to illuminate the meaning of the prayers we say each week. On Saturday we gathered again to make our very own Tie Dye Tallitot and also to assemble Havdalah kits that we were able to use later that night when we came together on Zoom. We had an amazing weekend being together in a variety of different ways.

The Tent Beit Midrash - In Person Community The Tent had our first in person gathering in November and it was incredible to have the teen community all together again. The theme for the night was hope, and the RYFTI Board teens led activities using poetry, chalk art, and games. Our RYFTI Advisor Ari Zimmet noted that they felt overwhelmed with joy after the program and that it was beautiful to watch all of the faces we usually see on the screen come together in person. We are looking forward to our monthly Beit Midrash sessions to gather in person as a Tent community.

The Installation of Cantor Alicia Stillman

During Qabbalat Shabbat on October 23, after four months of being entranced by her voice, we officially welcomed Cantor Alicia Stillman to Temple Israel! With special guests Rabbi Larry Hoffman, PhD (pictured above), Rabbi Angela Buchdahl, Cantor Rollin Simmons, Cantor Josh Breitzer, Noah Aronson, Elana Arian, as well as members of the Temple Israel community, the TI Band, and her Cantorial classmates, this moving evening was filled with joy and excitement for the future, when we can sing in person, together.

We have this wonderful installation, virtually perfect in every way, because our hearts want to share happiness and want to leap with joy. Debbie Friedman taught: Some days there won’t be a song in your heart, sing anyway. If you know the words, sing. And if you don’t know the words, sing louder! We want to walk through doorways and transitions and feel blessed with surety and abundance and love. Together. I am so happy to be here. I am so happy to leap with you and sing with you. The Zohar says: “There are mansions in heaven which can be opened only through song” - we WILL sing together and make music in meaningful ways, and we will open the gates of heaven with our voices. So, I’m going to get out of the doorway - because I’m here, I’m finally here. In a joyfully blessed haze of transition, I am stepping into your story. And at last we sing our stories. We sing because we store our deepest hopes and dreams in song; music and memory together, our sacred stories and our magical songs. Tonight we make it official. I become part of Temple Israel’s song, I am humbled and grateful for being entrusted with this precious gift you give me tonight. TEMPLE ISRAEL'S RECLAIM OUR VOTE CAMPAIGN We have a responsibility to ensure that every voice is heard and counted in our elections. Temple Israel’s Racial Justice Initiative reached out through postcards and telephone calls to voters, particularly voters of color, in 6 targets states for the nonpartisan Reclaim Our Vote Campaign organized by the Center for Common Ground. We’re grateful for our partnership with the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism and the Jewish Alliance for Law and Social Action. "Footsteps on the porch again...who could it be? I run to the window and watch new and old friends swapping envelopes of postcards with voting information to send to people targeted by voter suppression as we collectively move our campaign forward. For me, memories of working on Reclaim our Vote will always be intertwined with home isolation, confusion around COVID safety, and uplifting Zoom meetings complete with d'var and break-out groups. As the world spiraled down, I was delighted to hear the insights and passions of my fellow congregants and find a small way to do good!" - Deborah Heffan "During the Civil Rights Movement and beyond, John Lewis led the way in working to achieve racial justice. The urgency of combating voter suppression for this election inspired me to take up Mr. Lewis’ call that 'you must do something.' Sending postcards to people in Georgia, North Carolina, Texas, Florida, and Arizona encouraging them to vote, provided the perfect opportunity to take action. I was so happy to work with Temple Israel members who were clearly ready to act in those states where voices of black and brown people are too often suppressed. Together, we joined the march John Lewis started. I love organizing and working in community which proved to be the best way to make the postcard campaign effective. Even though we could never congregate to write our postcards or assemble our packet together, we developed new connections with each other to make a difference. We were committed, focused, had some fun, and developed relationships critical to making change. Imagine what else we can do together?" - Sandy Wixted "I have attended the Riverway Project for seven years, and enjoy the Jewish community that it provides. When I was furloughed in April, I joined a TI Reclaim Our Vote event recruiting volunteers to send postcards to voters. I jumped right in and was then persuaded to help get phone banking up and running. It was a great experience to meet members of the TI community and train them to make calls to voters in North Carolina and Florida. While I was excited to get involved and participate in our democracy to combat voter suppression, I did not anticipate that I would start to feel more connected to the TI community. I met so many great people that I would not have met otherwise. Opening School During a Pandemic By Helen Cohen, FJECC Preschool Director

Preparing to reopen a school amid a pandemic was no easy feat. Summer offered little respite with the presence of COVID-19. Our time was devoted to learning about, developing, and applying the continuously changing health and safety protocols to keep our students and staff safe. Getting ready to open our doors in this new reality created a need to hire new staff, purchase new equipment, and furnish new spaces—all while maintaining our dedication to providing the highest quality education for our students and developing robust curriculum content. Our staff had to swing into motion overnight to transition from a traditional learning model to providing school on the Internet. “Zoom” was a term we previously associated with comic books, and “Marco Polo” with history lessons. Nevertheless, with a fervent determination to succeed, the FJECC team quickly adjusted to teaching in unprecedented ways.

We are delighted to have been able to incorporate a new kindergarten class into our program this year. Innovation has always been one of FJECC’s goals. As a result, we responded affirmatively to the families who requested the adaptation of this program. Through the hard work of our dedicated staff, we were able to make this new venture a reality—providing an extraordinary teaching and learning opportunity for the 10 students we accepted. How fortunate for them to have two experienced educators teaching and guiding them in a small intimate class with their peers and a setting familiar to both them and their families.

Creating an environment where children are expected to wear masks and social distance, where materials and surfaces have to be sanitized multiple times throughout the day, and where numerous stringent policies had to be enforced takes both creativity and fortitude.

On September 8th, FJECC welcomed students back for in-person learning. After being at home for such a long period, the children craved the intellectual stimulation, structure, and social interaction our setting provides. We daily witness joyful, energetic, and thoroughly engaged children in the playful learning process implemented at our school.

During this time of uncertainty, many families of our FJECC graduates expressed a strong interest in extending their child’s educational experience at FJECC. Over the years, our school has become synonymous not only with an outstanding educational program but also with providing a warm and caring community where parents serve as our partners in so many capacities. What It Has Been Like... Participating in Virtual TILLI By Natalie Schatz When the pandemic shut down virtually all activity in mid-March 2020, the Spring curriculum for TILLI was already set up and brochures distributed and posted online. The topics of the study groups as always cover a wide range of topics: literature, science, history, cinema. I was scheduled to lead a study group, Life Revealed in Literature: The Writings of Three Italian Jewish Writers. The chair of the curriculum committee asked how many study group leaders would be willing to offer their course on Zoom. We were able to offer 4 courses in the Spring.I volunteered to be a pioneer because my study group would be easily adapted for the Internet. The participants were required to read the stories by the three authors in advance of the meeting and I led the discussion. It did not require visual or audio aides. My experience as a study group leader using Zoom is very positive. We had lively and interactive discussions as we viewed each other in close up. This fall TILLI offered 7 study groups. I took 2 of them, a study group on Jewish Angelenos and one on How Our Brains Work. Both courses used visual aides such as film, slides and YouTube talks which enhanced the learning experience. (By this time most of us had mastered screensharing with some glitches). Zoom is particularly effective in teaching scientific topics. For example, a slide illustrating the parts of the neuron shows up on your computer screen in colorful detail which is a vast improvement on trying to view the slice on a screen at the front of the classroom several feet away. As someone with practically no science background this was enormously helpful in the process. TILLI encompasses more than the study groups. It is morning coffee together before class, lunch and learn with excellent speakers on a range of issues,, a book series and numerous other activities. Virtual TILLI would not be possible without the dedication and hard work of Susan Misselbeck and Brigid Goggin.

Celebrating Beacon Academy and Marsha Feinberg

It is with excitement and joy that we celebrate Beacon Academy as it shares the news that it has just purchased its own building in Roslindale to house its remarkable program beginning in the Fall of 2021. In bittersweet news, it has also just been announced that Marsha Feinberg, Beacon Academy founder as well as long time Temple Israel member and past Board member, will be retiring at the end of the calendar year. After nearly two decades of vision, leadership, and commitment, Marsha is leaving Beacon Academy positioned for a bright future ahead. Beacon Academy began on the second floor of our building as a 14-month educational program for students between 8th - 9th grade. Over the past 16 years, they have transformed lives and helped their students through high school graduation, college, and into the professional world. Their innovation has served as an inspiration to teachers, schools, and other learning environments throughout the country. Beacon Academy has flourished and grown and has recently sought a space of their own to accommodate their larger vision for the future. We are proud of our long-term partnership and strong connection and friendship, as many Temple Israel members have been deeply engaged through tutoring, coaching, and supporting the Beacon Academy mission. We wish our Beacon Academy partners and students continued success, and we look forward to celebrating and engaging with the next chapter of their story!

Listening to the Past: Voices of Temple Israel The Archives has now digitized all its audio recordings from 1934-1979 thanks to a grant from the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR). They feature radio broadcasts, worship services, sermons, lectures, and community events in which Temple Israel rabbis Harry Levi (1911-1939), Joshua Loth Leibman (1939-1948), Roland B. Gittlesohn (19591977), many other rabbis, congregants, and visiting speakers talk about their lives, their world and other more timeless issues. The recordings capture their words, but also the atmosphere and music of Temple Israel life over time. The recordings will eventually be made public via Digital Commonwealth (digitalcommonwealth.org). However, we first need to listen to them for information that will enable users to access and search the recordings. We would love your help! Shabbat Tzedek and MLK Weekend With Special Guest Renee Graham January 15 - 18, 2021 Renee Graham is an award-winning opinion columnist and associate editor for The Boston Globe. She writes on a variety of subjects including race and racism, domestic violence, LGBTQ issues, police misconduct, gun reform, and politics. She is also a regular contributor on WBUR-FM's news affairs program, Radio Boston, as well as WGBH’s Basic Black. Since 2015, Graham has been a featured commentator in several CNN Original Series, the acclaimed documentaries covering the decades of the 20th century. She was also a mainstay in the cable network’s four-part documentary 1968: The Year That Changed America, a 50th anniversary commemoration of that seminal year, as well as its recent multi-part film history, The Movies. Graham also appeared in Netflix’s ReMastered: The Two Killings of Sam Cooke, a documentary about the famed soul singer and civil rights activist who was murdered in 1964. Last year, Graham was selected as one of the “25 Most Influential LGBTQ+ People of Color in Greater Boston” by Get Konnected! and Bay Windows.
