TIKKUN CENTRAL’S RACIAL JUSTICE INITIATIVE WINS THE 2019 IRVING J. FAIN SOCIAL JUSTICE AWARD We are thrilled to announce that Temple Israel has received the 2019 Irving J. Fain Social Justice Award for Tikkun Central’s Racial Justice Initiative: Purchasing & Investing Power!

The Fain Awards will be presented at the Union for Reform Judaism Biennial in Chicago this December. Kol hakavod to our inspirational team of leaders who spearheaded this effort!

TEMPLE ISRAEL ARCHIVES AWARDED DIGITIZATION GRANT The Temple Israel Archives has recently been awarded a grant from the Recordings at Risk Program of the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) to preserve and digitize 279 audio recordings from the Archives and make them publicly accessible. This project will provide a new lens into the history of Temple Israel, its eminent clergy, and the changes in the practice of Reform Judaism over the course of the twentieth century.

The recordings, dating from 1934 to 1979, capture services, sermons, lectures, and community events that feature eminent past Temple Israel rabbis Harry Levi (1911-1939), Joshua Loth Leibman (1939-1948), Roland B. Gittlesohn (1959-1977), many assistant rabbis, congregants, and other Jewish and non-Jewish religious leaders. After they have been digitized, users will be able to access the recordings for free on the Digital Commonwealth website (digitalcommonwealth.org), a statewide consortium of libraries, museums, archives, and historical societies from Massachusetts. They will also be available via the Digital Public Library of America (dp.la). As most of these recordings have not been played in many years because they are difficult to access, it will be exciting to hear the voices and words of the speakers as well as the tone and cadence of these long-ago events. Our High Holy Day celebrations for 5780 were amazing. Our clergy, staff, and community shined brightly as we gathered to pray, study, and renew our connections to each other.

In the year ahead, we will celebrate our Cantor Roy Einhorn. For 37 years, Cantor Einhorn has led us in song, prayer, and community. My own connections to Cantor Einhorn include many congregational trips (Cuba, Spain, and Israel), as well as his officiating at my wedding, and his incredible work with TI Cares, consoling me and my family when we have been touched by illness and death. We have sung together, danced together, cried together, and experienced the learning, love, and joy of the Temple Israel community.

We also lift up Cantor Einhorn for his ongoing and consistent efforts to raise our consciousness about our sacred connection to our environment, through recycling, composting, sustainable resource use, and hopefully someday soon, solar panels on our roof. There are no words to adequately describe each of our connections and thanks for all Cantor Einhorn has shared with us. I hope you will join me over the coming months as we celebrate Cantor Einhorn, his presence in our community, and all the gifts, insights, and talents he has shared with us for these many decades.

Our beloved Cantor Roy Einhorn will complete his long and distinguished service to Temple Israel of Boston and will retire on June 30, 2020. Cantor Einhorn has brought integrity, kindness, compassion, and a profound sense of professionalism to every task. We have benefited from his presence, musical artistry, and humor in everything he has done. His presence at thousands of life cycle events has brought comfort and joy. Throughout the year, we will honor Cantor Einhorn with programs that illustrate what he has meant to each of us.

Boston Immigrant Justice Action Network (BIJAN) is a network of faith communities and other activist groups working closely with immigrant leaders to provide one-to-one support to immigrant families. The work has exposed us to the horrors of immigration detention - a system so chaotic and dehumanizing that it seems intended to break down the hope and the will of our detained neighbors. BIJAN responds to requests from family members, and from detained immigrants who are advocating for themselves and each other.

Two Temple Israel Initiatives that would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of our lay leaders.

TEN DAYS OF AWE/RACIAL JUSTICE REFLECTIONS Three years ago, members of the Racial Justice Initiative explored the following question: How can we align our work with the Jewish calendar? One answer: “Reflect on issues of racial justice during the 10 Days of Awe”…and so #10Days10Ways was created.

This initiative has been lay-led, with the support of clergy and staff. Over 25 Temple Israel members identified resources, shared ideas, edited content, contributed artwork, suggested questions to spark discussion, helped with outreach, monitored the Facebook page, and collaborated on this project.

This year, lay leaders invited the the Anti-Defamation League New England, Inside Out Wisdom And Action, Jewish Alliance for Law and Social Action, Kavod, and the Jewish Community Relations Council to join in this collaboration.

Temple Israel members and local Jewish leaders working together offered even more resources and perspectives to explore. We are truly grateful for the energy and passion each participant brought to this process. Even though this initiative was shared during the 10 Days of Awe, all are encouraged to explore these resources and reflect on racial justice throughout the year. SECOND DAY OF ROSH HASHANAH LAY LED SERVICE & POTLUCK Leading prayers. Learning sacred melodies on the guitar. Adding in the beauty of congregant voices. Writing a d’var Torah. And, of course, organizing a potluck lunch! These are all elements of the Temple Israel lay-led second day Rosh Hashanah service. Adding to the joy of the holiday, some of congregants who were accustomed to celebrating Rosh Hashanah for two days wanted to be able to continue their tradition. For the last 14 years, Fran Godine, Carol Rosenstock, and Cindy Rowe have helped to bring together over 50 people for this service, originally inspired by Em Mueller. This year, the team of Andy Sherman (service leader), Jeanne Rintell and Martin Rowe (music), Marc Maxwell and Priscilla Golding (Torah reading), and Michael Malamut (shofar) conducted the warm and welcoming service that always appeals to a cross-section of our community.

IMPLICIT BIAS TRAINING

Creating a continuous practice and change of culture in our community.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES

By Marc Maxwell, Board President In these days when we are bombarded with electronic news, disturbing world events, memes and social media, we must hold fast to our own social and spiritual values, those aspects of being Jewish and human, that bind us together as a community. I am quite certain that Temple Israel, as a community, wishes to be open, inclusive, and diverse, a beacon for all who wish to pray, study, and be a force for positive impact on the world around us. To name and confront our own individual and collective implicit and explicit biases, we must have a common language and goal to do so. As part of this effort, which we know must extend to all levels, ages, and corners of Temple Israel, we brought our Implicit Bias Training to the Board of Trustees. We need to understand how we perceive, judge, and possibly make others feel less than comfortable in our midst, by our words, our actions, inactions, or innuendo. One of the things I have learned through our work on Implicit Bias is that this effort is never completed. We must constantly remind ourselves of how we present ourselves, how we greet and interact with others. While we are on our way to being the diverse and inclusive community we strive to be, there is always more we can do.

By Rabbi Dan Slipakoff We focused on staff training as an essential piece in the work of embodying our Temple Israel values of diversity, equity, and inclusion. At our annual retreat, our entire staff spent the day training with Yavilah McCoy, an internationally respected community leader and educator. We spent the day sharing personal stories and pieces of our identity so as to celebrate our diverse staff community. We recognized that none of us could be easily placed into a box, and that each of us were multi-faceted individuals with experiences of being both included and excluded. As we deepened our relationships as co-workers, we turned our focus to ask how we could use our developing awareness to best serve our greater TI community. We recognized where we are doing good work, while thinking deeply about where we need to improve. During the High Holy Days, our staff practiced this change in culture to provide a welcoming and inclusive experience for the thousands who came through the doors of the synagogue.

THE TENT: A JEWISH LEARNING COMMUNITY FOR GREATER BOSTON TEENS AT TEMPLE ISRAEL OF BOSTON

By Fallon Rubin, Education Program Manager, Middle and High School Programs Did you know that roughly 20% of Jewish people in the United States are Jews of Color? We’ve seen this reflected in the Tent over the years, and we are committed to being a community where all of our members feel seen and loved. Our Jewish values call us to address inequality wherever we see it, including in our own institution. In the Spring of 2019, we partnered with consultants Rosa Blumenfeld and Chris Messinger to design content to engage a multiracial group of students with an overall focus on racial equity. The individual sessions focused on expanding the teens’ awareness of their core identities (race, class, gender, faith), connecting to each other (interpersonal relationship building), and connecting to the community. We are committed to continuing this work at The Tent and are excited to incorporate this racial justice lens into our existing programming in order to invite our students to be their best selves, and provide more space for our students of color to flourish, thrive, and feel cherished.

What's Your Temple Israel Butterf ly Effect Story?

How experiences at Temple Israel inspired and positively impacted the lives of three congregants.

"I love weaving modern conundrums with meaningful themes from our ancient text. Family stories in the Torah are part of our civilization’s collective memory and have been alluded to in so much great literature, adding richness, depth, and gravitas. I don’t think I would have ventured so bravely into biblical imagery if it hadn’t been for the education I’ve received at Temple Israel. In particular, the modern midrash class taught by Rabbi Elaine Zecher that I have been a part of for the past dozen years is fertile ground for exploration. There, we are encouraged to write, conjure up, interpret for ourselves what is not said in the text – thus, we midrash (yes, it is a verb!), often exploring the woman’s point of view." JEANNE MCWILLIAMS BLASBERG is the awardwinning author of EDEN (She Writes Press '17) and THE NINE (She Writes Press, August ’19) She serves on the board of The Boston Book Festival as well as Grub Street, the nation’s preeminent creative writing center. She converted to Judaism at Temple Israel and, along with her husband, enjoys being a part of the community where their three children became bar and bat mitzvah.

"Having been taught about the world at Temple Israel since preschool, social justice has always been at the forefront of my education. Tikkun Olam has always been framed as an action rather than an ideology at TI, a simple practice that clearly has a pervasive and lasting impact. As I got older, these social actions turned inherently political, and my classes at Temple Israel in high school were a crucial catalyst in my skills when it came to advocacy work — I know many others who can say the same. My Jewish upbringing was certainly a pathway to several of my opportunities to grow as a writer and speaker, and also provided me with a cultural connection to the work of social justice." SARAH GROUSTRA wrote an opinion piece in her high school newspaper about the dire need to destigmatize periods. The column caught the eye of Rebecca Stone, an elected member of Brookline’s legislative body, whose collaborative efforts with Groustra and her peers led to Brookline becoming the first municipality in the country to provide free tampons and pads in public buildings.

"I grew up at Temple Israel – in Minneapolis – learning about Tikkun Olam, the Jewish idea that each of us bears responsibility for improving our community and repairing the world. And as an adult I've now been trying to practice that ethos as a member at Temple Israel of Boston for more than a decade. I am grateful to be part of a community that is continually working on Tikkun Olam and open to new learning about what that means in our times. Through the filming of Dawnland I have learned that there is a deep brokenness in the land we now call the United States. I believe this is because of our continued failure to honestly acknowledge that European settlers, like me, perpetrated genocide against Indigenous peoples with the explicit mission of stealing the land. Working for decolonization is a way that I can try to practice Tikkun Olam. Together we can begin to heal this massive wound. To do this I can try to stop continued seizure of Native lands, support the repatriation of land to tribal nations, support local farmers and food sovereignty, reduce consumption and waste, learn my local history, and know and acknowledge publicly whose land I am on at all film screenings and Upstander Project workshops. Candles are added to the chanukiyah from right to left but are kindled from left to right. The newest candle is lit first. Light the shamash (helper candle) first, using it to kindle the rest of the Chanukah candle sand sing:
