Meet Our Rabbinic Intern,

Micah Shapiro We are thrilled to welcome our new rabbinic intern, Micah Shapiro. A fourth year rabbinical student at Hebrew College, Micah has just returned from a 14-month journey that included Hebrew immersion at Middlebury College, eight months studying in Jerusalem, and a full time summer unit of Clinical Pastoral Education at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. While in rabbinical school, Micah spent three years teaching and leading prayer for Tefilot Mishpachot at Temple Beth Zion in Brookline. Micah writes original music for Jewish prayer and is excited to bring some melodies to the Temple Israel community.

MessAGE FROM CHRISTOPHER NOE, PRESIDENT The experience of greeting members of our congregation at the entrance of our building during the High Holy Days was incredible. Temple Israel can sometimes feel like a big place, but after greeting so many people, some familiar and some new, I felt a much stronger sense of connection to our community. If we did not get a chance to meet during the High Holy Days or you would like to continue our conversation, just send me an email at president@tisrael.org so we can find a time to chat by phone or meet in person.

My other suggestion is to keep an open mind about the transition process. Regardless of who the final candidate is, our next senior rabbi will be entering a new role as senior rabbi of Temple Israel. Please allow yourself the opportunity to imagine the changes and growth that are bound to happen for our community with the introduction of a new senior rabbi.

This is very likely to be my last column before the congregation votes on its next senior rabbi. While this event represents an exciting new chapter in our history as a congregation, change can also be a time of anxiety.

With this in mind, I want to humbly propose, and welcome feedback on, a few ways in which we can approach our rabbinic transition with the goal of emerging as a stronger community.

Our congregation has a rich history, and it is because of each of you that we continue to be a vibrant community. If you have thought about how you could get just a little more involved at Temple Israel, I urge you to consider volunteering with TI Cares. One phone call, one meal, or one care package this entire year is all it takes, and it would make a world of difference to the person on the receiving end. If you are interested in learning more about TI Cares, please contact Cantor Einhorn.

My first suggestion is to enter into constructive dialog with other members of the community about the upcoming transition, because the final decision ultimately lies with the congregation.

It is a privilege to serve as President of Temple Israel, and I look forward to navigating the upcoming changes to our congregation together as one strong community.

MessAGE FROM DAN DEUTSCH, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Temple Israel has a reputation for pushing the envelope and continuing to adapt, which has served us well over our 161 year history. This issue of Insight into Temple Israel of Boston marks some noticeable changes to our Temple Israel Bulletin.

Under the direction of our Director of Communications, Emma Sandler, we set out to redesign the Bulletin to make sure that it would be more focused on our congregation and core values rather than on our programs alone. After all, it is you, our members, who make our synagogue so unique and special.

The new concept will more deeply explore the innovative things that happen at Temple Israel with retrospective human-interest articles, written by various members of the community. As we make this change, we will be switching to a quarterly publication. Our leadership is excited to be making this change, and we certainly welcome your feedback.

Moving forward, our event listings will be found on our webpage www.tisrael.org where you can search for the most up to date details for what we have planned. We will also continue to share weekly updates in our e-newsletter,

ChaiLights, and the Shabbat Sheet that is handed out each Friday at Qabbalat Shabbat.

As we begin to improve our online presence, we have seen a dramatic increase in our virtual attendance for worship. Over the High Holy Days, we had 2,000 unique visitors stream our services. In person, we held over 30 unique services and had 9,000+ people come through our doors. I was truly inspired as I went from room to room watching our clergy lead our community through meaningful worship experiences.

While Temple Israel is focused on the changes that rabbinic transition will bring this year, it is important to point out that our community remains strong and continues to grow. We have reached a five year membership high, and now have well over 1,400 member families. We thank each and every one of you for making Temple Israel your community and we hope that you share our success with others in the Greater Boston Area. My door is always open to you, and I invite you to please continue to share your feedback.

The Installation of

Rabbi Suzie Jacobson

We were delighted to welcome

our newest Rabbi and Director of Religious Education, Suzie Jacobson, and to celebrate her Installation at our Qabbalat Shabbat Service on October 30. We are thrilled that Rabbi Jacobson and her wife, JoJo, elected to choose our Temple Israel family and Boston and thereby to continue the wonderful relationship that they have built with our community during Rabbi Jacobson’s six years of study at Boston Hebrew College’s Rabbinical School. Rabbi Sharon Anisfeld, Dean, and Rabbi Daniel Judson, Director of Professional Development and Placement, at Boston Hebrew College’s Rabbinical School, two of Rabbi Jacobson’s many beloved mentors, offered a beautiful d’var torah and blessing in Rabbi Jacobson’s honor, followed by a blessing shared by our clergy and congregation. Our RYFTI teens provided a musical tribute to their new rabbi, who is already a beloved figure in their lives.

Rabbi Jacobson brings to us extensive experience and rich higher educational achievement, having received a B.A. in History from Columbia University, a second B.A. in Jewish Philosophy from the Jewish Theological Seminary, List College, an A.M. in Religious Studies (with a concentration in Jewish Thought) from the University of Chicago Divinity School, and this past May, Rabbinic Ordination and a Master’s of Jewish Education from Hebrew College Rabbinical School. Rabbi Jacobson also was awarded a Certificate in Organizational Leadership from the Boston University Institute for Nonprofit Management and Leadership. Parashat Hashavuah, the Torah portion assigned for reading on that Shabbat, is entitled Vayera.

It begins with an iconic story which sets, forever after, Jewish cultural and spiritual value known as Qabbalat Panim, the imperative to offer a welcome greeting as an invitation to enter into meaningful relationship. Abraham

and Sarah’s generous reception of three mysterious travelers who pass by their tent is a model of what has become identified as the mitzvah of Jewish hospitality. After Abraham and Sarah offer comfort to these guests, they discover that before departing, the guests provide them with blessing. Rabbi Jacobson has already provided blessing and learning to all of the children and adults that she has taught for the past six years in her various teaching, social justice, and internship roles at Temple Israel. The love and admiration with which her students speak of her is a clear harbinger of the gifts that Rabbi Jacobson will continue to bring to us. Those feelings were palpable and profound as she was installed in her new role. We know that we can continue to anticipate the power of her generous and enthusiastic spirit, her intellectual insight, and her creative energy to return blessing to our entire congregation, as well as to the larger Jewish and civic communities of which we are a part.

My clergy colleagues, Rabbis Zecher, Soffer, Morrison, and Mehlman and Cantor Einhorn encourage our members to seek out opportunities to meet Rabbi Jacobson during the coming weeks and months in order to extend our welcome and in order to receive the joy of relationship with her.

A congregation should be known as a place that is welcoming and cares for one another.

As our tradition says, “Kol Yisrael aravim zeh la zeh” — All Israel is responsible for one another.

TI Cares, formerly known as the Caring Community Team, tries to do just that. For the thirty three years that I have been the Cantor of Temple Israel, I have seen congregants and staff taking care of one another by making consolation calls, visiting our homebound, providing meals, leading minyan services, and participating in activities to support and enrich the lives of our members. In recent years, TI Cares has been providing Chanukah gift packages to our college students at their dorms, delivering Purim mishloach manot (gifts) to our elderly, and before Rosh Hashanah dropping off honey jars with a written note of consolation and best wishes for a year of healing to those who lost a loved one in the previous year.

FACTS

Additionally, TI Cares in conjunction with the technology committee, launched our community@tisrael.org Google group. The mission for this group is to generate conversations and connections that will strengthen our Temple Israel community. Our expectations are for these conversations to be far-ranging. Someone may be seeking information about an upcoming Jewish cultural event, or there may be a question about finding a dentist, a DJ, or an electrician.

This forum has great potential to serve our community as we share ideas, information, and build relationships.

CUT DOWN ON USE OF PLASTIC

The co-chairs of TI Cares, Tanya Goldwyn and Susan Michaels, would be delighted to hear your suggestions of ways to “warm-up” our community and make it even more caring. Another way to get involved in repairing our world is through the Green Team. Late last spring, members of our congregation and staff gathered to discuss some initial ideas, such as paper and bottle recycling, education programming for our religious school, lowering our carbon footprint by replacing incandescent light bulbs, purchasing compostable food utensils and composting our food waste. Our executive director Dan Deutsch and building manager Julia Pollard are addressing a bigger issue of heating and cooling. The Green Team is chaired by a most dedicated champion of Tikkun Olam, (repairing our world), Joan Rachlin. Joan’s indefatigable spirit and energy is pushing us forward on multiple fronts. Nearly 90% of plastic water bottles are not recycled, instead taking thousands of years to decompose. Buy a reusable container and fill it with tap water, a great choice for the environment, your wallet, and possibly your health. The EPA’s standards for tap water are more stringent than the FDA’s standards for bottled water.

During an average year, an American uses approximately 2,200 napkins—around six each day. If everyone in the U.S. used one less napkin a day, more than a billion pounds of napkins could be saved from landfills each year.

There are 63 million newspapers printed each day in the U.S. Of these, 44 million, or about 69%, of them will be thrown away.

Recycling just the Sunday papers would save more than half a million trees every week.

On Thursday, October 8, the FJECC Preschool and the Temple Israel community came together on a picturesque fall day to celebrate the dedication of the new Rita and Adam J. Weiner and Family Outdoor Classroom at the Frances Jacobson Early Childhood Center at Temple Israel.

As all of the parents and greater community members know, the FJECC is a truly exceptional early learning institution. Under the vision and direction of our beloved Helen Cohen and her staff, the FJECC is always leading the way with innovative programming, The Rita and Adam J. allowing our little ones and our Weiner and Family Outdoor families to explore, learn, and thrive in a nurturing, non-pressured, and Classroom, one of the first engaging environment.

New Year,

welcomed the Reform movement’s new machzor, Mishkan HaNefesh, into our prayer experience.

New Machzor,

When our Director of Communications, Emma Torah Sandler, asked me to write this article for the newly designed bulletin, Insight, about the experience of using the new machzor, I was hesitant for one simple reason: having devoted time and effort for the past six years to its development, creation, and production, I have a different kind of familiarity with it. As we worked on the machzor, we were very aware that the prayer book is but one piece of the High Holy Day experience. The music, the ambiance, and the experience of entering the building all play a role.

And yet, having access to an elegant, engaging, beautifully presented machzor certainly has the potential to enhance the experience.

New Experience

It happens in every service. The clergy invites the congregation to pray privately until a particular page and then to be seated when each person is done. During Shabbat, and in previous High Holy Days, the time between the instruction and the sound of seats squeaking as various people sit down is not long.

This year, on Rosh Hashanah, however, something different happened. After the clergy gave that instruction and turned to face the ark to pray privately, we heard no sound of anyone taking his or her seat. We waited. And then we turned back to face the congregation. No one had moved. The congregation was engrossed in the machzor in their hands. This moment was repeated in each of our services throughout the High Holy Days this year as we

Based on the many comments spoken and written to me personally and to my colleagues, we could not be more thrilled by the positive response. Here are some of the repeated themes from the feedback we got from the congregation:

• Instead of attending any of the Yom Kippur afternoon

programs, you sat outside, read, and reread various poems and prayers, and reflected on the meaning for you.

• You found that you more deeply understood certain sections and prayers through the explanations and essays.

• In years past, you felt alienated from the service because

you had to keep checking the transliteration booklet. This year, you felt fully integrated by being able to follow the transliterated Hebrew.

• You felt liberated to pray using a different expression of

a prayer even though everyone else—or so it seemed— was reading a different version.

• The Yom Kippur liturgy was very heavy, literally and figuratively.

• It was impossible to read and experience everything the machzor has to offer, and you look forward to returning next year.

To produce a new machzor is an honor. To witness how it speaks to each of us is a sacred opportunity we all share.

As we all grow more familiar with, and learn from Mishkan HaNefesh, I pray the High Holy Day experience will grow richer and more meaningful with each new year.

Riverway Project Harvest Festival for 20’s and 30’s

This fall, the Riverway Project community gathered in larger numbers than ever before, since our inception in 2001. We began our season with over 700 young adults who attended our ticketless High Holy Day services, and we culminated our season of gathering by returning to the roots of Sukkot. For the last three years, we have joined together with Ganei Beantown: Beantown Jewish Gardens to celebrate the holiday through delicious food and inspiring Jewish learning. This year, we focused on our local New England harvest and packed a full sukkah at our Sukkot Harvest Festival.

The preparation for the harvest began over the summer when Temple Israel member, Riverway Project leader, and homebrewer extraordinaire, Aidan Ackerman, led a workshop on how to brew beer at home. We gathered in the Temple Israel kitchen for a discussion on beer in the Torah, followed by a hands-on brewing experience. Our beer, “Sukkot Sour 5776,” was brewed, bottled, and kept chilled until it was ready to be enjoyed under the sukkah.

To celebrate the harvest, we first headed to local farms to find fresh fruits and vegetables to help make our festival dinner as mouthwatering as possible. Leora Mallach, Director of Ganei Beantown, worked closely with Riverway Project participants to divide up recipes and develop cooking team leaders. Then, on the evening of October 1, our kitchen was bustling with 20’s and 30’s: roasting spaghetti squash and zucchini, glazing carrots

in fresh maple syrup, carefully slicing red onions and mushrooms for our autumn quiche.

With homemade beer ready to drink and homemade dinner ready to eat, 40 young adults headed outside to the Temple Israel sukkah. It was a cold night but our food and company kept us warm. In the sukkah, Rabbi Soffer led us in a text study and conversation about the significance of the booths in which we dwell. Among ancient and modern sources, we studied Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan who argued that “having the Israelites relive their Wilderness experience on the festival of Sukkot was bound to place them in a frame of mind which enabled them to detach themselves from the order of life which they had come to accept as normal and to view it critically.” Like the Israelites, we were placed in a new frame of mind in our sukkah, taking a step back to consider our own lives in the context of our busy urban society.

As the rain began to fall and our night began to wrap up, we dug into our apple crisp, sipped warm tea and took turns shaking the lulav. We bade farewell to summer and ushered in our 15 year stronger than ever, dedicated to continue building community for young adults, connecting them to each other and to Judaism, through Temple Israel.

Let’s Be Friends: Meet Sarah Kianovsky and Frank Friedman More than just services and classes, this has made it more clear how many communities the institution must serve.

Our vision is to help Temple Israel serve all of the various interests, and not just our own personal needs.

What do you think is the most important work that Temple Israel does?

Temple Israel is at its best when it provides people with a home--spiritual, emotional, or intellectual.

As we kick off the 2016 Friends Annual Fund, we are pleased to introduce Sarah Kianovsky and Frank Friedman as the Chairs of this year’s Friends Annual Fund. Get to know Sarah and Frank and why they support Temple Israel and the Friends Annual Fund.

How long have you been members of Temple Israel, and why did you choose Temple Israel?

We have been members since 1997. We initially chose it because of the strength of the education program, and because our oldest child was enrolled at FJECC, so it was already home to her.

How have you been involved with Temple Israel?

Sarah just completed her sixth, and last year on the Board of Trustees, where she was liaison to the Museum and Archives committees. Before that she was on the Religious School committee and the Education Task Force. Frank is serving his fifth year on the Leadership Council. He was one of the founders of the weekday minyan, and co-chairs the 477 initiative. He also organized the first Sha-Bike Shalom rides. We have also both served on the nominating committee, but not at the same time.

How has this involvement shaped your vision for Temple Israel?

Working from the inside has shown us how many people, lay leaders and staff, work hard and are invested in programming and making Temple Israel run smoothly.

What do you hope that Temple Israel will achieve in the near future? In the long term?

In the short term we need to emerge from the current rabbinic search process as a congregation that is more aware of all of our needs, ready to work together to build and grow an even more dynamic community. In the long term, we hope that we are able to maintain the diversity and progressive nature of the community, so that we can continue to evolve as a bastion of American progressive Judaism in this new century. The only way to maintain that diversity is to insure that membership is a possibility for anyone who wants to join us.

What do you value most about Temple Israel?

We value that ours is a community that welcomes inquiry and debate. The programming and spiritual life clearly reflect that. We have strong clergy leadership; with their guidance many of Temple Israel’s most vital programs have arisen directly from member initiative.

Why do you think the Friends Annual Fund is so important?

The Friends Annual Fund makes membership affordable for many of our members. Diversity is our strength.

We have already raised over $45,000 for the 2016 Friends Annual Fund. In order to meet our budget this year we need to raise $425,000. Our goal is that every member of Temple Israel will make a donation to the Friends Annul Fund this year.

Each gift makes a difference. Your participation in the Friends Annual Fund strengthens our community and is one of the reasons such diversity exists and keeps membership affordable for so many of our members. Former Congressman Barney Frank was the speaker at the 21st Annual Joy Ungerleider* Jewish Book Month Program, an endowed lecture series under the supervision of the Temple Israel Library Committee, on Friday evening, October 16. He focused his talk on military spending, and also touched on a number of subjects relating to his many years in Congress.

Following the program, there was a question-andanswer period in Levi Auditorium, led by Library Committee Chair, Barbara Cevallos; and Mr. Frank signed copies of his book for the enthusiastic crowd. He also told us about a new documentary, Compared to What: The Improbable Journey of Barney Frank, broadcast on Showtime networks October 23.

Preceding Qabbalat Shabbat and Mr. Frank’s presentation, a reception was held in the library to honor Rabbi Friedman’s many years of advocating/ educating on behalf of LGBT Jews and our families.

The library committee and I thought it fitting to combined the celebrations of two champions of LGBT rights – Barney Frank and Rabbi Friedman.

As described in The New York Times, “One of the chief distinctions and rewards of Frank is the way the author’s odyssey to honesty perfectly tracks America’s journey to a more open-eyed, healthier, better place. Both he and the country travel through the wake-up call of the AIDS crisis; the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy for gays in the military; the Defense of Marriage Act; and the rapid rise of same-sex marriage. Frank was there for all of it, not just an observer but in many instances a key actor and in all cases someone with a special interest and stake in what was going on. Few politicians have a vantage point and story quite like his.”

Thistles and Thorns

How many peace signs are in Israel’s plant history?

From the peace and prosperity engendered by the fig and vine, to the quasi-universal sign of peace embossed in the dove and olive branch, to the humility of the oft trampled hyssop plant, the import of these plants cannot be underestimated. These plants helped forge our ethical boundaries.

Who were the people who cared for the seedlings of Israel?

Who watered them?

Shaded them?

Guarded them?

Who were the tillers and tenders of plants? People of humility, perseverance, and a broad world vision. People who, through the years, brought an arid, sand-swept wasteland to a green, flowered, fruited, and forested oasis.

In the Fall TILLI (Temple Israel Lifelong Learning Initiative) study group, Thistles and Thorns, we embarked on a hands-on, text-rich exploration of the historical and metaphorical meanings of plants as they variously colored the biblical landscape. Through reading, lecture, and

discussion of biblical as well as more current literature, art, and, where possible actual plant specimens, we explored what thistles and thorns represented.

We saw how plants highlighted human frailties and showcased the nobility of the human soul; we saw which plants were aligned with good and which with evil, which with arrogance and which with humility. We discussed the prophetic role played by plants in the formulation of our values.

For more leisurely reading, members of this study group took home a weekly synopsis featuring one of each of the five fruits mentioned in Deuteronomy 8:8 as being the “glory of Israel”, including the history, characteristics, and properties of each fruit.
