FROM THE

BOARD PRESIDENT & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

This is my final column for Insight and I am sad to have my term as President ending. This has been a very exciting two years for Temple Israel and I have enjoyed every hour of it. I am very pleased that Marc Maxwell will be taking over and that a great group of new Trustees and members of the Leadership Council will be as careful governing Temple Israel as I have tried to be.

Gary Pforzheimer Board President

We initiated a review of the Bylaws over the past year, primarily to ensure that the governing practices we value are embodied in them, and that as times changes so do our rules. For some, Bylaws are academic exercises; for me, to have an accurate organizational constitution is as important as well produced financial statements. When Bylaws change, sometimes they are the first evidence of an adjustment of process. One example of this is expanding the definition and inclusion of all of our working groups/task forces/committees as part of Leadership Council so we can honor as leaders the many members who contribute to the vibrancy of Temple Israel life. Other times, in the intervening times since the last their review, practice has gotten ahead of what’s in the Bylaws and upon inspection and voting they can match the desire of who they exist for. When we had a much larger Board we used to have a small group called the Board of Managers, who were the keepers of the financial assets of Temple Israel. We now have a more accountable Board and a Treasurer and Investment Committee, much like high functioning nonprofits, and no longer have the need for a group (that actually hasn’t existed for almost a decade). I urge all who are reading this to come to our Annual Gathering on June 13. I’m not going anywhere, but I will have a short chance to say “farewell" as your president and Marc Maxwell will have the opportunity to tell us what he is looking forward to. We will have the opportunity to reflect on this year, show our appreciation for the hard work and efforts from our members, staff, and clergy, honor some special people, have another chance to wish Rabbi Soffer well, and relish in a vital and dynamic Temple Israel. We will vote in new Trustees and new members of the Leadership Council (and acknowledge the good deeds of those cycling off). And, we will vote for new Bylaws to keep Temple Israel living true to the will of the congregation for whom it exists.

Dan Deutsch Executive Director

As we move toward the summer, I find myself inspired to reflect. It has been another memorable year filled with spirituality, social justice, discovery, and community. As I always say, you, our valued congregants, are the center of Temple Israel's success, and today I want to lift up two specific individuals who have given their heart and soul to TI. A huge thank you goes to Gary Pforzheimer, our outgoing Board President, who has given over ten years of leadership support at the board level and beyond. As President, he has led with poise and strategic thinking, two incredibly important characteristics. I'd also like to thank our Treasurer, Alane Shanks. Alane's professional skills and tireless dedication helped our congregational finances immensely. Both Alane and Gary have always been there to answer emails, phone calls, and to support our staff and our Board. Please join me in thanking all of our leaders who are transitioning and join us in person to honor their service and to install the next wave of leadership at our Annual Gathering on Thursday, June 13 at 6:00 p.m.

“ Sandy Starr, Leadership Council, moving to the Board of Trustees

Temple Israel has been a focal point for my adult life, a place where I've prayed, learned, laughed, and grieved. A place where I have made wonderful friendships and broadened my own horizons. Being on the Board has capped this experience, helped me learn more about the functional complexities of this remarkable place, enabled me to participate in key decisions about TI's future, and work closely with our incredibly dedicated and talented clergy, staff, and other lay leaders." - Susan Ebert

Don't miss the Annual Gathering, June 13, for the opportunity to

Thank You & Farewell to Rabbi Soffer! Join us during Qabbalat Shabbat on June 7 for a special opportunity to celebrate Rabbi Soffer and wish him and his family farewell as they begin their new journey!

To our colleague, our rabbi, our friend,

Dear Rabbi Soffer,

Our gratitude is simple, profound, and bittersweet. The blessing of your presence these past nine years has bought innovation, wisdom, humor, scholarship, and much joyful laughter. You have challenged, inspired, and brought us to new heights and depths of understanding. As much as we are sad to say goodbye, we know that you will bring these gifts and more to Judea Reform Congregation in Durham, North Carolina.

Thank you for sharing your many gifts and talents with the congregation and TIkkun Central. As lay social justice organizers, it is our style to reflect deeply as we brainstorm our actions. So here’s our list of the many things we are grateful for as you’ve led us toward righteous impact.

Since we turn at this time of the year between Passover and Shavuot to Pirkei Avot, the ethical teachings of the rabbis of the Talmud, we share this passage from 3:15: The world is judged with grace; yet all is according to the predominance of the deeds. You have brought kindness to your work and raised up goodness and truth in the way that grace leans toward mercy. You have taught that justice results from the actions we take toward one another and out into the world to ensure righteous impact everywhere. You model and embody grace and good deeds in your devotion to Judaism and Jewish living. We are grateful we have been able to do all of this together with you. Thank you. We love you. May you, Nicole, Caleb, and Carmel go forward with strength and blessing.

Thank you... • for bringing values and vision as we’ve connected to the broader world; • for reminding us that organizing is messy, uncomfortable, and requires taking risks; • for inspiring us with your beautifully written words and modeling how to connect Jewish text with justice; • for teaching us and learning with us; • for valuing and trusting the strength of lay leadership; • for sharing your amazing sense of humor; • for your compassion, humanity, courage, and persistence to work for righteous impact. We will miss you dearly and wish you all the best as you lead Judea Reform Congregation. With love and gratitude,

- Your clergy and staff partners, the Board of Trustees and Leadership Council, and everyone who is part of the community of Temple Israel

A LOOK BACK

AT RABBI SOFFER'S TIME AT TEMPLE ISRAEL RIVERWAY PROJECT FOR PEOPLE IN THEIR 20s & 30s Rabbi Soffer spent six years at the helm of the Riverway Project, connecting those in their 20s & 30s to Judaism through Temple Israel. Over that time, he brought about a significant transformation of innovative programming and deeper engagement offerings, including the creation of ticketless "Open Door" High Holy Days.

THE VILLAGE FOR FAMILIES WITH YOUNG CHILDREN Over the last two years, Rabbi Soffer developed the vision for The Village, based on the ever-evolving needs of families with young children. In a collaborative effort with the Temple Israel Education Department, Village Coordinator, and the Village Leadership Team, we have seen a positive shift in better integrating this demographic into our congregational life.

CRISIS RESPONSE During Rabbi Soffer's time at Temple Israel, we experienced many local, national, and global crises, including the Boston Marathon Bombing, the riots in Charlottesville, and the Tree of Life Synagogue Massacre in Pittsburgh. In response to each crisis, Rabbi Soffer led us to a place of comfort and connection, bringing together and strengthening the interfaith community.

SOCIAL JUSTICE Together with a team of exceptional lay leaders, Rabbi Soffer developed what was previously Ohel Tzedek into TIkkun Central: the umbrella for all justice and compassion activities at Temple Israel, whether directed inward toward the Temple Israel community or outward towards the larger communities within which Temple Israel resides. Within this framework, our community has been at the forefront of many campaigns, including Gun Violence Prevention, Transgender Equality, Healthcare Cost Control, Criminal Justice Reform Bill, Immigrant Justice work, and our very own Racial Justice Initiative. In addition to welcoming countless political leaders into our Sanctuary for MLK Shabbat Tzedek year after year, we have traveled with Rabbi Soffer to the MA State House on Beacon Hill and to Capitol Hill in D.C., and he represented us at the White House to make our voices heard.

Welcome, Rabbi Dan Slipakoff! We are thrilled to introduce our new Assistant Rabbi, Dan Slipakoff, who will join our clergy team to serve our congregation this July! 1. What is a text that influences your thinking about your rabbinate? Pirkei Avot 2.2 teaches: “Splendid is the study of the Torah combined with a worldly occupation.” The text urges us to ground our religious practice in purposeful action, while elevating our daily activities towards a meaningful higher cause. 2. What initially drew you to be interested in Temple Israel of Boston? Temple Israel has earned an amazing reputation as a congregation that practices what it preaches. Coming from a social work background, my eye was drawn to the incredible contributions TI makes towards creating a better Boston and a better world. After digging a little deeper, I was blown away by the diverse spectrum of life that TI houses. It seems like there is something for everyone, and I was excited to see what might be there for me!

3. Has anything surprised you about Temple Israel of Boston? The work hard/play hard mentality I see at TI really speaks to the camp counselor inside of me. Every person I have met has greeted me with smiles and warmth, but also a seriousness and commitment to making the greater community the best in can be. There is a tangible current of joy vibrating through the congregation, and I think it is based in people’s authentic commitment to living their best Jewish life. 4. What do you want the congregation at Temple Israel of Boston to know about you? I have a passion for the energy of crowds: live music, live sports, and yes, Shabbat services. I try wholeheartedly to throw myself into community wherever I am – so please share your favorite pieces of Boston and TI with me. I believe that a rabbi must be a civic leader, with the ability to recognize unique gifts and needs across diverse communities. As a rabbi, I aim to build the collective by celebrating the individual.

RIVERWAY PROJECT'S SEDER SQUAD 2019

“

I absolutely loved being part of the Seder Squad, and while this was my first seder that I've ever hosted, it was very successful, and I'm looking forward to hosting more in the future." - Jennie Rodowicz, Seder Squad 2019 Leader

By Rabbi Jen Gubitz and Nikk Modell-Wasserman Every year around Passover, the Riverway Project receives endless inquiries about Passover Seder options for young adults in Boston. This year we thought, "let’s host our own Seder here at Temple Israel for the Riverway community," but then we reminded ourselves that Passover is meant to be spent around a table in a home, asking deep questions, sharing stories, learning about yourself, and pushing the boundaries of what it means to be free. So—we decided that our responsibility to the community was this: we’re not going do it for them, but we’re gonna help the community do it for themselves. Thus, we developed: Seder Squad 2019! We opened applications in February when few people were ready to think about Passover. Nonetheless, among numerous applicants, 12 young adults were selected to join our Seder Squad cohort. It was an amazing group of people who got to know each other through this leadership development process. They committed to attend at least four sessions of learning, training, and preparing for Passover through text study, cooking, glass etching their own Seder plates, designing their own Haggadot, and taste testing Passover foods. (We learned that Cherry Manischewitz is really gross!) It was thrilling that by the time Passover arrived, our Seder Squad hosts were well prepared to graciously open their homes to over 140 young adults throughout greater Boston. So, why was this Passover night different from all other nights you wonder? Because this year, redemption looked like sitting around a table with access to food and community and ritual that our Riverway cohort created themselves. It was an amazing experience for all and we can’t wait for Seder Squad 2020!

“

Seder Squad provided a unique opportunity to deepen learning around Passover, rituals, traditions, and innovation opportunities within the Seder. It was great to do that with a cohort of peers with different family traditions, Seder experience levels, and backgrounds. The whole experience was a great enrichment opportunity around hosting a first Seder. Thank you for the opportunity!” - Rachel Welt, Riverway Leadership Team

A CLOSER LOOK AT OUR 2018/2019 RIVERWAY PROJECT COMMUNITY The Riverway Project will soon embark on celebrating 18 years since Temple Israel’s bold vision to invest in young adult engagement in 2001. In 2018 alone, the Riverway Project reached nearly 1,400 unique participants through diverse opportunities for conversation, connection, and community. We continue our monthly Soul Food Friday Shabbat celebrations, Riverway Cafe learning sessions, Jewish Holiday gatherings and more. Innovations this year include: Small Groups led by our Riverway Leadership team members, including Kiddush Club (Wine Tasting), Cookbook Club, Jam Session, Nice Jewish Queers, and MENtality: A Jewish Guys Group. Modern Couples, Big Jewish Questions led couples through an exploration of designing their Jewish lives together. Seder Squad reached nearly 175 people who gathered to learn, prepare, and celebrate Passover together. We celebrated Sukkot with our Farm to Sukkah dinner and partnership with Ganei Beantown Jewish Gardens. Chanukah was joyful and bright with an Olive Oil Tasting at the Olive Connection (owned by Temple Israel members) in Brookline, a 30's/40's party attended by more than 70 people, and neighborhood candle lightings through Boston. Our Tu B’shvat Seder in Cambridge was our opportunity to explore our relationship to land, food, and conversations about our personal roots and communal connections. We continue our outreach and expansion into Cambridge and Somerville, with Shabbat morning brunch and learns in our Central Square WorkBar space and Shabbat in the ‘bridge, an intimate Shabbat celebration. With the support of our amazing Riverway Leadership team, Riverway Coordinator Nikk Modell-Wasserman and Educator, Ryan Leszner, it has been an exciting year!

Boston-Haifa Trip & Exchange

By Roberta Bergstein

The Tent, Temple Israel’s Jewish Learning Community for Teens, has been a partner site for the Boston-Haifa Connection, a program facilitated by CJP. We are paired with Kiryat Haim High School in Haifa, Israel. Students who participate in this program spend class time learning together and building relationships with their sibling class in Kiryat Haim. The course includes a 10-day trip to Israel, followed by a visit to Boston for Kiryat Haim students. This year, I joined eight Tent students and Tent educator, Rabbi David Winship, who teaches the course on Monday nights. At the conclusion of the trip, it was important to us to hear the students’ reflections. "The Boston-Haifa Connection, whether in the classroom throughout the year, staying with an Israeli host family, touring the country with my friends, or meeting Israeli teens, taught me so much about both Israel and myself. I was able to get multiple perspectives of the country and gained a stronger conviction to pursuing justice for all those living in the region. Engaging with cultures both similar and different to your own is always a valuable experience." — Jonah Tauber "This program provided me with a unique experience of life in Israel. The bonds I’ve created with my Israeli peers are long-lasting, just like the memorable and meaningful conversations we’ve had. I truly think I have a deeper understanding of Judaism and what it means to me, how I want it to play into my future, and why it’s important in my life. Had I not participated in the Boston-Haifa exchange program, I wouldn’t have nearly as significant of a perception of Judaism, Israel, and Temple Israel I will be forever thankful for this experience." — Rachel Alexander "The Boston-Haifa Connection changed me for life! Going to Israel, connecting with my peers there who live different realities, but being able to get to know all of them and connecting with them is certainly valuable and unique. I do feel like I have a home in Israel thanks to the program. Traveling around Israel after our stay in Haifa was equally eye-opening. I relearned what it meant for me to be Jewish and I feel more connected to my Judaism."— Shoshanna Dansinger "The Boston-Haifa Connection provided me with opportunities in which I saw the world, Judaism, and the IsraeliPalestinian conflict through a new lens. I fostered strong friendships with Israeli high school students as well as with my peers from Boston. This exchange challenged me to think critically and to evaluate and reevaluate my stances on difficult issues." — Serena Rumpler

Helen Cohen, Director of the FJECC Preschool, traveled with a group of educators and professionals to Israel February 17-28, 2019. In Haifa, Jerusalem, and Tel Aviv, they explored the old and the new, nature, educational settings, innovations, the complexity and diversity of Israeli society. CENTER FOR ADULT JEWISH LEARNING SPRING 2019 LECTURE SERIES Thanks to generous donors, we are proud to offer a variety of annual endowed lectures, including the Burstein Scholar-in-Resident Weekend, the Carl Steinbaum Lecture, and the Herbert M. Karol Musical Weekend as part of the Center for Adult Jewish Learning at Temple Israel's Town Hall program. This Spring we welcomed the greater community to our Feinberg and Wyner Lectures.

March 8, 2019 THE ROSE FEINBERG MEMORIAL LECTURE Rose Feinberg was a religious school teacher at Temple Israel for more than two decades. In 1982, Feinberg’s family endowed an annual lecture series in her honor. The Israel-centered program serves as a living tribute to a woman with a great love of Israel and Jewish learning. This March, we welcomed Rabbi Rick Jacobs, President of the Union of Reform Judaism, who spoke about deepening our connections to the Jewish State. Despite recent Israeli government policies that are challenging to Reform Jews in North America, Rabbi Jacobs offered insight on how we can advocate strongly for a JewishDemocratic State that promotes equal rights, pluralism, and builds the infrastructure of peace.

April 12, 2019 THE RUDOLPH H. & SARA G. WYNER LECTURE In 1985, Dr. Elizabeth Wyner Mark and Justin L. Wyner endowed a lecture series in honor of their father, Rudolph Wyner. The lectures series celebrates Wyner’s love of Jewish art and folkways. The series was later renamed the Rudolph H. and Sara G. Wyner Lecture Series after their mother’s death. This April, we welcomed the Reciprocity Collaborative and Ilya Vidrin for an unforgettable evening interweaving worship with live music and dance. Throughout the Qabbalat Shabbat experience, we experienced expressive choreography paired with the passionate music of Jewish composers including Mieczysław Weinberg and Ernest Bloch, both exiled due to the Holocaust. Ilya's family resettled in Boston from the Soviet Union with the help of the Temple Israel. He grew up at Temple Israel and feels deeply connected to our community.

GENE KESELMAN, MAIA FISHER, & MIRABELLE AND NEVE KESELMAN

The family has most recently made its home in Brookline by way of many twists and turns. Maia was raised in a Reform synagogue in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and felt a very strong sense of Jewish identity growing up. After moving to the Northeast to attend Brown University for her undergraduate education, she continued her education at Harvard Law School. She and Gene met in Ann Arbor, and moved together to Washington D.C., where they lived for 13 years. There, Maia worked for a law firm before joining the U.S. Department of Labor, where she has been working for the past decade. Now in Brookline, she is working as the department’s Regional Solicitor of Labor for the Northeast. Gene immigrated to the United States from the former Soviet Union in 1980, as a part of a refugee program as his family fled the antisemitism and forceful suppression of religion they experienced under Soviet communism. Early on, the family was affiliated with and supported by the Jewish community in Pittsburgh, but they eventually settled in Michigan, where Gene enjoyed a regular American upbringing in Ann Arbor. There, Gene enrolled in Hebrew School, learning more about Jewish tradition and ritual, and through a birthright trip at age 16, developed a deepened sense of Jewish identity. Driven by a desire to give back to the country that had taken in his family, Gene joined the United States Air Force under the Department of Defense. Upon being appointed to his current position at MIT, he relocated with his family to Boston. The couple’s children are currently enjoying life at Temple Israel through the Religious School. Mirabelle, age ten, has a strong interest in sports, which she enjoys as both a participant and a spectator. She also has a passion for writing and a knack for PowerPoint presentations on why she should get a cellphone. Neve, age eight, shares her sister’s interest in sports and may have discovered a future destiny as an engineer: her interests include mathematics and all STEM subjects. The family was initially introduced to Temple Israel by fellow member Fiona Murray, who is the Associate Dean of Innovation at MIT Sloan, and the Faculty Director at the center that Gene now directs. The size and beauty of Temple Israel, as well as the quality of educational programming, were deemed a good fit! In the coming years, the family looks forward to becoming more familiar with much of the social justice programming organized by Temple Israel, and exploring the opportunities available through the breadth and depth of programming centered around social impact. www.tisrael.org/insight | 617-566-3960

VIEW FROM THE CEMETERY

By Seymour Small, Cemetery Committee Chair The Temple Israel Cemetery in Wakefield is the resting place of over 2,500 members of our community. During the past year, I took pictures of every grave stone, and observed that every stone has a history that often prompted questions. Who was this person? Did they live a long life, or a short one? Did they have a family? Did they have an unusual first or last name? Is there an interesting quote on their stone? What size and shape is their stone? Are they related to a current Temple Israel member? Is the inscription in Hebrew or English? What can I find out about this person using a Google Search, or by looking at a genealogy website? Every so often, I would stop and stare at a gravestone, such as with this one, of Annie J. Schein who sewed the first flag of Israel:

The Flag of Israel Wikipedia page does not mention her name, but it does mention her father Joseph Askowith and brother Charles Askowith (who is also buried in our cemetery.) Look for more articles on famous and non-so-famous cemetery occupants in upcoming issues of Insight. If you would like to know more about the TI Cemetery, please contact Sue Misselbeck at susanm@tisrael.org.
