BOARD PRESIDENT & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

As we settle into late winter, I want to share with you my experience of attending the Union of Reform Judaism (URJ) Biennial held in Chicago in December. Temple Israel had a good showing with over a dozen members and staff in attendance. We joined with, literally, thousands of other Reform Jews from across North America to share in thought, prayer, dance, and song. We heard from our national leaders, including our own Rabbi Jonah Pesner, Senior VP of the URJ, as well as our best and brightest Rabbis, Lay Leaders, musicians, and students. If you have ever experienced Qabbalat Shabbat, or Shabbat morning services, with 3,000 raving fans, you know how uplifting it can be. I personally caught up with many of my fellow alumni from the Scheidt Seminar and the Large Congregations Gathering, both URJ annual events that Marc Maxwell Board President support congregational leaders and highlight our Reform Movement. Past President Kathy Weinman helped author a Resolution on the Study of Reparations for Slavery and Systematic Racism, which was adopted, and our own Terry Yoffie was recently elevated to the National URJ Board of Trustees. Temple Israel received a coveted Fain Award for Social Justice for our Purchasing and Investing Power efforts to support local Black owned small businesses in our catering and vendor relationships. Rabbi Gubitz presented on our work supporting interfaith couples and families and about the leading successes and innovations of the Riverway Project. Those of us who attended the Biennial felt both the strength and renewal of being part of a larger, progressive Reform Jewish community. Each late night ended for me with Jewish music, from Klezmer to Blue Grass, sealing each day with toe-tapping joy.

For those of us present at Qabbalat Shabbat on January 3, we had the pleasure of Governor Charlie Baker as a somewhat unexpected guest. Governor Baker came to show his solidary with us as people of faith. Those of us who met with the Governor and heard his words after Rabbi Zecher’s sermon felt that he came to assure us hate and bigotry have no place in the Commonwealth. One never knows what you might experience at Qabbalat Shabbat or Torah Study at Temple Israel!

As you read this we have moved fully into our celebration for the decades of joy and music Cantor Roy Einhorn has shared with us over his amazing Cantorate. I urge you to join us for all the celebrations as we fete Cantor Einhorn into the next chapter of his life. We have much to be thankful for and the song and music of Temple Israel is high on my list.

For 37 years, Cantor Einhorn has blessed our congregation with warmth and spiritual nourishment.

During my time at Temple Israel, it has been a privilege to have a front row seat witnessing the cantor’s professionalism and genuine connection with virtually all he contacts. Chances are you have also felt this impact directly, and so it is my request that you consider contributing to the Cantor B. Einhorn Cantorial Endowment.

We have already raised over $2,500,000, which is a tremendous achievement for our community. This fund will help our congregation continue our long-standing commitment to placing music at the center of our work. The fund will provide support for the salary of our new cantor, High Holy Day and Shabbat musicians, and more. In addition to our Friends Annual Fund, which we rely on each year, I ask that you consider an additional gift of the heart. Your gift will ensure that the same connection and engagement with music that has shaped Temple Israel this past 37 years will live on with strength for future generations.

SHOWING UP FOR LOVE

A Shabbat Tzedek with Yavilah McCoy and Temple Israel’s commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

In Temple Israel’s 1965 Religious School yearbook, Helaine Klein, a tenth grade student, wrote about Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s visit to TI’s Passover service. She painted an image of a hopeful audience swarming the foyer in anticipation. Loudspeakers were set up outside for those wishing to take part in the service. Dr. King, she wrote, spoke for 45 minutes with no notes. He spoke in a soft tone, and he spoke from his heart. Dr. King called on this community to stand up and fight against ignorance and racial oppression. As I sit here in Temple Israel and write this article for Insight in 2020, I see the faces of current Temple Israel students when I picture Helaine. I conjure their voices lifting up the words “Justice! Justice! Justice!” as nearly a thousand of us walked out of Friday night’s Shabbat Tzedek service, our Sabbath of Justice honoring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy. Their calls for justice still ring powerfully in my ears, like an echo from 1965.

During Saturday’s Torah Study and training, Yavilah McCoy, our honored guest this Shabbat Tzedek, invited us to “leave the land of the frozen chosen” and to embrace our sacred text through an anti-oppression lens. We should not view our biblical narratives as frozen in time, but rather we should ask how these narratives speak to contemporary issues of social justice. Yavilah challenged us to look at the Exodus text of Pharaoh’s daughter drawing Moses from the water through four levels of impact: Personal, Interpersonal, Systemic/Institutional, and Cultural. We were asked to reflect on the characters’ multiple roles as the Perpetrator, the Target, the Bystander, and the Ally. Most importantly, we were challenged to make it personal. When have you been Moses? Pharaoh? Pharaoh’s daughter? When have you been a target? A perpetrator? A bystander? An ally?

Just as we should “leave the land of the frozen chosen” in our biblical narratives, so should we also listen to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s message as though we are standing with him at Temple Israel in 1965. We know that there is modern day racial injustice in Boston. We see it when the Boston Globe publishes a survey naming Boston the least welcoming major city to People of Color. We see it when we look at our segregated schools, our disproportionate wealth gap, and the underrepresentation of Black business leaders, health professionals, teachers, and public officials.

TI has been fighting these injustices beyond our Temple walls for generations. Now, I ask us to look within our own walls. I ask us to stand with Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at Temple Israel and respond to his call to fight against injustice, starting with our own synagogue community.

During Saturday’s training, Yavilah presented us with modern day scenarios of racial injustice. In small groups, we were challenged to talk through these scenarios using a lens of restorative justice: centering the principles of repair, encounter, and transformation.

This was not just a powerful thought exercise, but a cause for concern because each of the scenarios given represent real-life examples of racism and intolerance in the Jewish community. This is a call to action. We need to open our hearts and minds and embrace radical welcoming for all people, regardless of race, class, gender, sexuality, age, or immigrant status. As Yavilah said on Friday night, justice and equality does not just land in our laps – we need to make a choice. We need to choose to see the uncomfortable, the trouble in our water. And when swimming in troubled water, we need to learn to swim differently. Yavilah invites us into this work through the act of love. To show up for love. When we show up for love we realize how we make people feel matters just as much our intent. When we love each other, it’s okay when we make mistakes and promise to do better next time. When we show up for love, we create a beloved community.

RESTORATIVE JUSTICE is an approach to building just communities that views justice as rooted in human dignity, healing and interconnectedness. Within a restorative justice approach, injustice is seen as a condition that causes harm to people, relationships, and our communities. In this light, the pursuit of justice must address those that have been harmed as well as those who have harmed others. When we are practicing restorative justice, we gather in community to discuss what harm has occurred to people, relationships, and our communities and how we can work together to bring about resolution. It asks people to address injustice in community by asking: Who has been harmed? What are their needs? Who is accountable to address these needs? How will we work collectively to repair what has been harmed? Restorative justice is an approach meant to lead to transformational change in people's lives. SHABBAT TZEDEK SERENDIPITY

As I listened to Yavilah McCoy during the Shabbat Tzedek service, I was inspired by her message, which felt particularly meaningful during these difficult times. She asked “what can we do every day to deepen the power of love?” and then listed several specific actions that would be helpful as we navigate the current struggles in our country and world.

Among her exhortations was that “we’re going to need to reciprocate what Mother Earth gives to us and how she cares for us despite our abuses.” That comment stayed with me, since helping to heal the earth is a priority for so many of us. I often leave such gatherings filled with hope and energy, but then life intervenes and it’s back to business as usual despite the best of intentions.

In this particular case, though, the opportunity to donate food from the oneg (thanks Fresh Food Generation, MIDA, and ZAZ!) led me to a personal experience with Yavilah McCoy’s teachings. I’d like to share my story, but first a bit of background: Temple Israel has worked hard to minimize food waste by composting, and also by taking leftovers to either Rosie’s Place or the Pine Street Inn. Temple Israel staff members Jennifer Cinnante and Julia Pollard, and accommodator Ricardo Abreu, have been committed to ensuring that unused food is picked up and delivered to a shelter within 24 hours of its preparation.

Jennifer asked during the oneg if I could take the food to a shelter, but it was by then too late (they stop accepting donations at 8:00 p.m.). My husband, Seymour Small, picked it up from Temple Israel the next morning and took it to the Pine Street Inn. I called Pine Street to make sure they would accept the donation and a man named Kwabena Nkromo answered the phone. I told him my name, explained that I was calling on behalf of Temple Israel, and asked if they would accept a lot of food from an MLK service the night before. He said, “I was there and that was wonderful food! I had four plates full. We’d be happy to have it!” What a happy coincidence! It is a very small world after all.

Seymour and Kwabena met during the drop-off and Seymour learned that, in addition to being a chef at Pine Street, Kwabena is also involved with urban farming, specifically with raising and preparing food for those who are food insecure. They exchanged contact information and Kwabena emailed me photos of the food donation and of him enjoying the Oneg with friends. Even though we have only met virtually, I already admire Kwabena. He will be coming to our home for dinner and I know that he has a lot to teach me about both healing this earth and producing and providing food for those in need.

I am grateful that Yavilah, Jennifer, Julia, Ricardo, and Temple Israel have led me to the threshold of a new friendship.

Getting to Know Cantor Alicia Stillman!

With great excitement and anticipation, we are pleased to announce that Cantor Alicia Stillman will serve as our next cantor! We will welcome Cantor Stillman in her official capacity in July 2020, but we just couldn't wait to ask her a few questions...

What drew you to become a Cantor?

In reality it was a combination of influences, at the time I was a childbirth advocate working with young families. I was also teaching music in the JCC preschool, and was asked to lead family services for Shabbat at various synagogues. A good friend clarified the path that everyone seemed to see but me! In truth, the cantorate became a natural extension of the joy of being Jewish.

You should know that my mother suggested this to me when I was 17…but you know teenagers…

What Jewish melody or song would you choose to best illustrate your personality? Why? What just popped into my head is Milk and Honey’s “Hallelujah” the 1979 Israeli winner of the Eurovision Contest. I remember hearing it when I was still in Hebrew School and feeling tears spring into my eyes when I heard the music and the sweetness in their voices. In this song, effervescent and bursting with love, is simple poetry that expresses a lovely and deeply joyful sense of gratitude.

What style of “non-Jewish music” has influenced you?

My interests are so eclectic! I grew up playing classical piano so always had a ‘classical crush’ on Chopin and Bach, yet I also felt I adore the old standards of the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s, and Ella Fitzgerald! When I was in high school and starting singing in choirs, I couldn’t stop listening to vocal groups like the Manhattan Transfer; those harmonies are a mystical experience! However, I came of age in the 80’s and believe me, I wore out my LP of Carole King’s Tapestry. Fantastic lyrics and melodies really excite me – I like ‘smart’ writing…and then, who hasn’t sung their heart out to all of Billy Joel’s “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant.”

What initially piqued your interest in Temple Israel of Boston?

Temple Israel is an institution! Boston Jewish life is amazing! The diversity of culture, people, ways of thinking, and an opportunity to step into the footsteps of wonderful Cantor Einhorn. What really piqued my interest, though was the people. So much love and care and respect…I wanted to peek inside to see more…and am so grateful I did.

Has anything surprised you about Temple Israel of Boston?

I’m overwhelmed with how devoted to Temple Israel its members are. There is generational love and connectedness to TI – it’s extremely moving and inspiring. Everyone I’ve met, from staff and clergy to leadership and the members themselves; have a deep love for TI and the Jewish life this community continues to build. Come Celebrate Purim at Temple Israel!

Purim is always a time of great sillness - costumes, puppet shows, carnivals and good food. But did you know that the Torah tells us we are supposed to both party and also take care of those in need? We learn in the book of Esther: Mordecai … sent dispatches to all the Jews throughout the provinces of King Ahasuerus, near and far, charging them to observe the fourteenth and fifteenth days of Adar, every year— the same days on which the Jews enjoyed relief from their foes and the same month which had been transformed for them from one of grief and mourning to one of festive joy. They were to observe them as days of feasting and merrymaking, and as an occasion for sending gifts to one another and presents to the poor. (Esther 9:20-22) Just like the Jews of Persia, on Purim we take a break from all that is difficult in life to celebrate being Jewish, enjoy our wonderful community and remember our responsibility to live our best values. This Purim, remember to wear a costume and bring tzedakah money so we can support the organizations on “Tzedakah Row.”

Each child interacts with the seder according to their own learning style and needs a different way to learn and engage. Bring your questions, make for yourself a teacher, and acquire for yourself a friend!

By Brigid Goggin, Managing Director of the Center for Adult Jewish Learning In Judaism, asking questions can be a sacred act. Asking questions creates relationship, moving learning out of the solitary and into the communal. In Pirkei Avot, we learn to “make for yourself a teacher, acquire for yourself a friend� (1:6). There are two wonderful lessons here. The first is that everyone has the potential to be a teacher. We aren't instructed to find the smartest or most qualified person. Instead, it is about seeing the value in the people around you, and reaching out. By asking our questions to another person, we lift them up to a new status. We make them a teacher. The second takeaway is that learning in partnership creates a bond of friendship. Judaism has us strip away any assumed hierarchy between teacher and student, and celebrates the special intimacy of being vulnerable about what you do not know, and seeking the answers together. And through relationship, built on shared discovery, we become more capable and equipped in our pursuit of justice and compassion. As Benjamin Mandelstamm said, "A human being is like a letter of the alphabet: to produce a word, it must combine with another." We can learn and do so much more together than alone.

VIEW FROM THE CEMETERY Seymour Small, Cemetery Committee Chair Last June, we held our annual Commemoration Service at the Temple Israel Cemetery in Wakefield. We toured the graves of six women, each of whom has an interesting history. Following is one of those stories: Marjorie Weinman Sharmat was the author of more than 130 books for children and young adults. Among the most notable were the two dozen Nate the Great books - named for her father Nathan Weinman - about a pancake-loving boy detective who wears a Sherlock Holmes-style hat and always catches his culprit, usually with the help of his dog, Sludge. Marjorie died in Indiana this year, and was buried beside her husband, Mitchell, in the plot that Mitchell's parents bought in 1919. A grandson named Nate was among her survivors.
