MESSAGE FROM

THE BOARD PRESIDENT

Greetings for a prosperous and healthy 2018! Three events brought together many into the TI orbit over the last two months and I couldn’t be prouder of how we made the most of these opportunities.

First, The National Association of Temple Administrators (NATA) was in Boston and our Executive Director Dan Deutsch was one of its three organizers. Dan was on a panel for one session, and was in charge of choosing the speakers and curriculum. I was honored to speak at one of the sessions and when I met with other administrators they were amazed that this was the first time he’s been a Temple Executive Director. Over 500 administrators from all over the country attended the closing banquet in the Levi Auditorium and TI board members had fun giving tours of the building before our meeting that night.

Second, the URJ Biennial came to Boston and our own Rabbi Zecher was the moderator for one of the plenary sessions captivating thousands on the subject of innovation and adaptation in a world where change is the only constant. TI was well represented with a large delegation for both the sessions and for Shabbat. It was

Finally, we invited the wider Boston community for Shabbat Tzedek on January 12 and it was spectacular.

Over 800 people filled the Sanctuary to hear from our youth and Beacon Academy students, to celebrate our economic initiative to help Black owned businesses, and alongside more than twenty faith leaders from around the city, to raise up how we can work together to pursue peace and righteousness. The success of the evening reflected the hard work from everyone who ensures that justice remains a strong foundation of the work we do. We are enormously grateful for their passion made manifest in these efforts.

Temple Israel brings together the larger Boston and Jewish community in amazing and wonderful ways. I am proud and grateful to be part of this synagogue.

As always, I’m inspired by all of the incredible initiatives happening at Temple Israel. December marked the official launch of The Village for Families with Young Children, our revamped program designed to offer families support, meaning, and community. In this issue, you will also find out about our commitment to special needs inclusion and making every member of our community feel like a part of this wonderful place.

It is also important to us to enact our values outside of our walls. A year ago, our Racial Justice committee made a commitment to support Black owned businesses. We have followed through on this commitment by developing a list of almost fifty vendors in the areas of food and drink, entertainment, and business who we would love for you to support as well. You can find it on our website at www.tisrael.org/racial-justice-initiative.

extraordinary to have a national stage for us to showcase best practices in so many areas from leadership transition to governance and social justice work, to name but a few.

If you joined us for our incredible Shabbat Tzedek, you also got to sample some of the food from these vendors, and I’m sure you’ll agree that it was delicious.

The Evolution of TILLI:

How it happened, where it is today, and where it’s going tomorrow.

Beginning in 2007 and officially launching in 2008, the Temple Israel Lifelong Learning Initiative (TILLI) has re-invigorated continuing education and has revitalized connections to the community among people ages 55 and older. Now that’s something to celebrate.

The first TILLI trip was to the Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, MA in 2009. Since then, there have been over 40 TILLI trips, including: Dead Sea Scrolls at the Museum of Science, Worcester Art Museum, Moakley Court House, The Institue of Contemporary Art, Tour of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Peabody Essex Museum, Massachusetts State House meeting with legislators, WGBH tour and lunch, Touro Synagogue, Vilna Shul, Fuller Craft Museum, John F. Kennedy Museum, Edward Kennedy Museum, and many more!

Reflecting on Temple Israel’s Shabbat Tzedek

There’s a story told of an elderly gentleman, a retired music teacher, who lived in a boarding house. Each morning a neighbor of his, a student, would stop by his room and ask, “What’s the good news?” The old man would pick up his tuning fork, tap it on the side of his wheelchair, and say, “That’s middle C! It was middle C yesterday; it will be middle C tomorrow; it will be middle C a thousand years from now. I can hear the tenor upstairs—he sings flat! The piano across the hall, it’s out of tune, but, my friend, this tuning fork will always be middle C!”

In our diverse community, we have a “middle C” in our calendar year. Like middle C’s placement on a piano, it falls in the middle of the year, on the weekend of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Remembrance. At Temple Israel of Boston, our Sabbath of Justice, Shabbat Tzedek, is as important as any other gathering. We might go so far as to say that Shabbat Tzedek is our midyear “high holy day,” especially in this age of unfettered injustice, growing inequality, and reckless racism vociferated and sanctioned from the most powerful office of the land.

This year, we returned to our middle C, our Shabbat Tzedek weekend, with our spirits emboldened, and, with our partners singing with us in harmony, we found the grounding hope we need to sustain our work in the days ahead. We heard our middle C, in distinct tones, at each of our four gatherings from Friday through Monday: • In our uplifting service on Friday, when Chaplain Tina Chéry of the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute challenged us all to find hope and strength out of despair.

• At Torah study on Saturday morning, when we delved into the prophetic writings of the courageous 19th c. abolitionist David Einhorn.

• On Sunday morning at Bethel AME, when we were blessed to hear the sermons of Rev. Ray Hammond and our own Rabbi Elaine Zecher who each shared Scriptural words of love and strength.

• At BostonCares on Monday, when we rolled up our sleeves with hundreds of others across Greater Boston to engage in direct service work, reminding ourselves that each and every one of us, young and old alike, has the divine capacity to shine light.

I shared the story of middle C with our friends at Bethel AME, as more than 40 Temple Israel congregants joined them in their worship, and midway through my story the keyboardist began playing. Then he added other notes upon that enduring centerpiece on his keyboard; and more; and before I knew it, he was playing a melody that would enable all in the church, Jews and Christians, to sing together. The notes filled the room, and soon we added words, in unison: “You are my hope.”

Saturday - Martin Luther King, Jr. Shabbat Torah Study

After attending Shabbat Torah Study for a number of years, I’ve learned that the Torah is a living document. It is a mirror held up to our lives. The MLK Shabbat Torah Study dealt with the Torah portions about slavery in biblical times. It was meaningful to sit in the Levi Auditorium studying about Judaism’s view of slavery and to know that Martin Luther King spoke in this very auditorium over 50 years ago. We see that social justice has been an essential component of Reform Judaism continuing to honor the words in Deuteronomy 16:20 ‘Justice, justice you shall pursue…’” — Helene Bailen

Monday - Day of Service

It’s important to volunteer on MLK Day because Dr. King wanted to make the world a better place for us to live, and by volunteering we are helping to make the world a better place.

I like how many people showed up and the wide variety of activities they had available for us. This past December, the URJ Biennial brought 5,000 Reform Jews and community leaders to the Hynes Convention Center in Boston to worship, learn, sing, network, and be part of the largest Jewish gathering in North America. The six-day program included over 140 learning sessions and 230 expert presenters. Congratulations to the following people from the Temple Israel community who were among this group of expert presenters: Rabbi Jen Gubitz, Ben Poor, and Sharon Bort Jewish Millennial Leadership and Engagement: Empowering a Generation (Audacious Hospitality) Millennial engagement is the future of Jewish life in America. As this generation rises into leadership in America, they will shape industry and community. In this session, a panel of millennial lay leaders who are helping to guide their generation into Jewish engagement shared reflections and answered questions about Jewish life for millennials.

David Trietsch Managing a Presidential Transition in Your Congregation (Strengthening Congregations) Designed for congregational teams comprising the rabbi, executive director, and incoming president to attend together, this session was designed to help leaders create a smooth transition from one president to the next. By creating and sharing goals and learning to understand each other’s leadership styles, roles, and responsibilities, participants strengthened the sacred partnership among them and the leadership framework within their congregation.

Matan Koch Weaving Disabilities Inclusion into the Fiber of our Congregations (Audacious Hospitality) Disabilities inclusion is more than an activity or an event, it is an awareness and a culture. This panel of disabilities experts guided participants on creating naturally welcoming congregations by developing comfort and competence about disabilities among all staff and lay leaders. Participants gained an understanding of the cultural change necessary to create welcoming and inclusive congregations, and left with practical skills to bring back to their home communities.

Rabbi Elaine Zecher Plenary Session on Innovation In this plenary session, exploration of innovation took center stage. Rabbi Elaine Zecher moderated a discussion with Rabbi Josh Feigelson, the Founder of “Ask Big Questions,” and Jodi Nussbaum, Vice President of Special Project Production at Sesame Workshop, about adaptation and speaking to your audience.

Rabbi Matt Soffer Better Together: Teens, Congregations, and Tikkun Olam The energy, commitment, and enthusiasm Reform Jewish teens bring to repairing the world can help congregations advance their own social justice efforts. In this session, participants learned from teens and adults about the powerful community organizing and Tikkun Olam work they have been able to do by combining their efforts.

Dan Deutsch How Customer Relationship Management (CRM) Systems Support Congregational Engagement Decisions about changing or upgrading membership management software to support congregational engagement can be challenging and time-consuming. Assessing your needs, evaluating the alternatives, finding funding, managing the data, testing, training, and more - the tasks and hurdles may seem endless. In this session, participants learned from congregations that have successfully navigated this process and now support enhanced member engagement.

Dr. Frank Friedman, Susan Ridker, and Julie Unger Engaging Baby Boomers in Your Congregations: An Encore Stage of Life (Baby Boomers Symposium) Institutions are only slowly getting prepared for the type of programming, engagement, and relationships that Boomers seek and expect. We need to share the message and the urgency for our Reform movement to address this constituency’s unmet needs and place them on our shared national agenda. In fact, as Boomers represent the largest cohort of Jewish adults, our growth and vitality as a movement and as a community depend on it. We need a new conversation about aging. This program was a day of learning with experts in the field of Baby Boomer engagement, featuring the work of congregations participating in the URJ Engaging Baby Boomers Community of Practice.

Inclusion at Temple Israel Rabbi Jen Gubitz and Sivan Einsohn, Inclusion Coordinator Temple Israel’s Inclusion Task Force, in coordination with our clergy and staff, are proud of the ways in which TI is welcoming and supportive of people with many needs - from removing physical barriers that increase accessibility, to creating a more inclusive community that values differences and diversity.

With the support of the Ruderman Family Foundation, this past year a cadre of lay leaders have explored the various needs and opportunities where we might work to support our community more deeply. We identified three strategic areas for focus: • Mental Health & Mental Illness • Cognitive & Intellectual Disability • Community Conversations & Education Please be on the lookout in ChaiLights for a short survey that will help us learn from you in order to better support those in the TI community who navigate life with visible and invisible disabilities. And, if you have a passion to work on these issues, please reach out to Rabbi Jen Gubitz.

Temple Israel leaders at a Ruderman Inclusion event

A Spotlight on Inclusion in Our School Inclusion isn’t just about building accessibility; it is a mental and emotional stance that causes us to be thoughtful, open minded, and patient. It is in our nature to want to help those we see with a visible disability, but truly, it is those who suffer invisible disabilities that challenge us to be better.

In the past two years, as religious school enrollment has rapidly increased, we have developed a strong awareness and desire to immerse and support students of all learning styles and needs. Our growth is certainly a driver to advance services to new and existing students, but we remain diligent in our core values and goal of bringing Jewish education to all students. We strive to reach out to families, be available when needed, and strategize best methods to modify lessons and classroom environment. Most importantly, we lead with compassion, flexibility, and patience. The program also works hard to provide classroom aides and one-to-one aides when possible, so students can access the curriculum at their own pace while developing a sense of community and friendships. Students and staff alike also benefit from the guidance of our Inclusion Coordinator, Sivan Einsohn, who assists in maximizing access to our curriculum for all learners.

Inclusion is a continuous process that involves us all, and the religious school remains devoted to fostering an inclusive educational community.

“I initially became interested in Temple Israel because it was welcoming to interfaith families. I started my deeper community involvement by serving on the Budget & Finance Committee for a couple of years before I was nominated to be on the Board. When I was Dean Richlin’s Vice President, we started an effort to change the governance structure. Over the next few years, we saw the Brad Gerratt, 2005 creation of the Leadership Council and the reduction of the Board from 100 people to 18. During my term, we focused on fiscal discipline and put new budget guidelines in place. I still serve on the Budget & Finance Committee today!”

“I am deeply grateful to the clergy and community of Temple Israel, not only for being able to serve as President, but for the education and mentorship I received as a member of the congregation before I was involved in governance. The leadership opportunities that present themselves are myriad, and the more involved I became, Carol Michael, 2007 the more fascinated I became in the inner workings of this incredibly diverse and unique synagogue. I helped to create Heneinu, a group that reached out to members in need. I studied liturgy, helped to create the Daily Minyan, learned how to write a D’var Torah, led Shiva Minyans and Torah study. I was the first President to lead the small Board of 18 members after governance change. Together with my Vice President, Marc Maxwell, we led the transformation of Levi Auditorium from a little used auditorium to the welcoming worship, meeting, and celebration space that it is now. My focus was always to tie our sacred mission to the daily functioning of a complex organization in order to create the most welcoming community possible. In that way I hoped that others could find their place as I had.”

“I became involved at Temple Israel by serving on the Education Committee when my kids were in the Religious School. When I became Board President in 2009, the country was going through the economic crisis, which left many in financial distress.

It was important to me to bring people together to think about the culture of fundraising at Temple Israel. This led to the creation of the Development Strategy Committee, which I am still the Chair of today.”

“I first became involved at Temple Israel when my daughter, Laura, was in the first Kesher family education class as a third grader. I got the chance to meet the parents and study Jewish texts. During my term as Board President, we planned for and commenced the search for a new senior rabbi. Today, I am a regular participant at Torah study, take classes at the Center for Adult Jewish Learning at Temple Israel (including Talmud with Rabbi Jacobson) and help lead our Racial Justice Initiative.”

“My wife, Shari, and I were two of the original members of the Riverway 20’s and 30’s community. During my term as Board President, we selected Rabbi Zecher as our Senior Rabbi. My family continues to be regular attendees at Friday night services, and I currently sit on the Nominating Committee. “The goal of The Village is to connect Jewish families with young children to each other and to Jewish values, within and beyond the walls of the synagogue, through activities that bring joy and meaning to their lives.”

As Temple Israel learned through its flagship 20s & 30s program, the Riverway Project, if the Jewish community is to remain vibrant, it requires continually focusing and refocusing ourselves on the Jewish people. The lives of young families today are radically different from decades ago. According to recent Pew studies, most working parents feel they do not spend enough time with their children, and their lives are increasingly hectic and stressful. Temple Israel is devoted to serving the entirety of the Jewish community, especially those in the stages of life that render them most distant from formal Jewish organizations. We are actively innovating our formal and informal education structures to meet the needs of families from infancy through preschool with increased flexibility and creativity. With this goal in mind, Temple Israel launched The Village for Families with Young Children to increase our reach to disengaged families and increase the likelihood that these families will “re-covenant” with our Jewish community.

On Saturday, December 16, The Village held its kick-off event and Chanukah party. The goal was simple: to host an event that was inclusive of families from around the Boston area, open both to Temple Israel members and non-members as a way to reinforce the mission and values, and show the wider community what we are all about... and to have great donuts. We were successful on all fronts.

The goal of The Village is to connect Jewish families with young children to each other and to Jewish values, within and beyond the walls of the synagogue, through activities

that bring joy and meaning to their lives. Throughout the Chanukah party, it was apparent that old friends were reconnecting and bonding over the shared experiences of raising babies and toddlers. New friendships were being formed over rousing choruses of the Dreidel Song, and a friendly competition over who made the best applesauce to accompany our latkes. We threw our inhibitions to the wind when we marched as Macabees around the Social Hall with our preschoolers to screams of delight. We worked together as a community to craft a gorgeous paper chain Chanukiah out of construction paper and tape.

Our community within The Village thrives to be supportive, nurturing, and open. This was evident as our leadership team made every effort to welcome each and every parent, grandparent, and child into our folds at the Chanukah party. We witnessed just how successful we can be at living our mission and values, as attendance exceeded our expectations, and our party was bursting at the seams with familiar and new faces.

We are so excited to build on the momentum of our Chanukah party in this new calendar year.

We will continue to host our regularly scheduled Shabbat and holiday observances, and we will expand our gatherings to be even more varied and inclusive. Temple Israel is uniquely located to address the needs of Jewish families with young children around Greater Boston.

Raising young children is full of wonderful surprises and challenges, and because we know that it cannot be done alone, we are blessed and overjoyed to have launched The Village.

Please consider helping a Yazidi refugee family who has lived through an unspeakable nightmare.

We’ve all seen the photographs of refugees being attacked in their villages by ISIS, living in unsanitary conditions in crowded camps, or huddled in small and shaky boats as they attempt to cross rivers or oceans.

We mostly stand idly by because we don’t know how to help. Temple Israel has already resettled one Syrian family, and by doing so, embodied the Talmudic teaching that “to save a life is to save the entire world.”

We now have a chance to help another family, but need your support in order to do so. The family of four who needs our help are Yazidis: an ancient, monotheistic, peace loving people whose religion combines elements of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. Yazidis once numbered in the millions, but they have been decimated due to the 72 separate genocides directed against them.

The family in need came to Boston to seek medical help for their toddler son, Dilibreen, whose face was burned beyond recognition on his first birthday when his crib caught fire in a refugee camp. Rabbi Zecher learned of Dilibreen’s plight and brought it to the attention of congregant Tanya Goldwyn, the longtime chair of TI Cares. For the past 18 months, Tanya has almost single-handedly sustained this family by arranging housing and providing food, medications, and clothing. Tanya has accompanied them on an endless stream of medical appointments, moved them to and from four donated apartments, and taken them on outings for relief from the hardship of living from doctor visit to doctor visit. Dilibreen has already had seven surgeries at the Shriners Burns Institute since arriving in Boston and will need at least a dozen more.

Tanya is a tzadek and sees her involvement with the family as a way of paying forward a debt to those who saved her family’s life during the Holocaust. As she notes, “the course of Jewish history would have been different if enough people had spoken up and taken action.” She cites the generosity of several individuals in helping the family, including Helen Cohen, the families of the FJECC, and Fran Putnoi, who has helped with short term housing. The family is now in need of long term housing, as well as financial support, so Tanya is reaching out to the wider community. It takes a village to raise a child and, in Dilibreen’s case, to heal a child, and Tanya hopes that the TI community will join her in the performance of this ongoing mitzvah so that Dilibreen can have a new face and thus a new life.

Through listening to lots of recordings, this class will look at what klezmer, the traditional instrumental music of Eastern European Jews, was like in the old country; what happened to it when the musicians migrated to America in the early 1900s and how the music has continued to evolve through the Big Band era, the dawn of the LP and into the 21st century.
