MESSAGE FROM CHRISTOPHER NOE, PRESIDENT In November 2016, Combined Jewish Philanthropies (CJP) and Brandeis University released their latest in-depth study of the Greater Boston Jewish community. To read the full report, follow the link https://www.cjp.org/about-us/ourmission/our-community or type “CJP 2015 community study” into your web browser. The study contains many interesting findings for Temple Israel, perhaps the most significant relating to geography. While the Jewish population of Greater Boston has remained essentially flat over the last decade, there has been a shift in where people are choosing to live. The last ten years has witnessed a move closer towards the city center and away from more distant suburbs. In addition to historically large Jewish populations in Newton and Brookline, a growing Jewish presence now extends from Roslindale through Jamaica Plain, the South End, and Back Bay into Cambridge and Somerville. Much of this growth is driven by people under the age of 40.
In this issue we are fortunate to have some additional analysis of the CJP study from our member David Trietsch. David and Rhoda have been TI members since 1989, and David is the founding director of CJP’s Leadership Development Institute. As both a member of TI and leadership professional within the Jewish community, he has tremendous insight on how we at Temple Israel can learn from this study. His article can be found on the next page. Temple Israel continues to be at the forefront of innovation in synagogue life. Look for more to follow. It is an exciting time for our congregation, and I am honored to serve as Temple Israel’s President.
MESSAGE FROM DAN DEUTSCH, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR There is so much going on at Temple Israel these days. In this issue we are delighted to highlight some of our recent programs, including Shabbat Tzedek and our recent teen trip to Israel which was made possible through support from Combined Jewish Philanthropies. As we make it through the cold New England winter, our lay-leaders and staff have put together innovative programming which is sure to entice you. If you have not yet checked out one of our many inspiring adult education courses please join us for one or many of the offerings. The Adult Education Committee has been working hard to put together a terrific calendar of learning opportunities. As we kick off the 2017 year, we are now halfway through the Temple Israel fiscal year. THE “GREATER BOSTON JEWISH COMMUNITY STUDY”

By David Trietsch* The recently released “Greater Boston Jewish Community Study” conducted by the Cohen Center at Brandeis confirms several trends that we at Temple Israel have felt for some time and others that can further inform our thinking and strategies as we seek to be a center of Jewish life in greater Boston. The study is long and comprehensive. Following are a few of the pertinent findings: • The Jewish population of greater Boston is shifting towards the inner city. Fifty percent of young adults (18 to 34) are now living in Cambridge, Somerville and Central Boston. (Boomers are also moving inward from the suburbs.) • The fastest growing category of self-identified Jews is “just Jewish” with a dramatic decline in Movement affiliation as a primary identifier. • Synagogues remain the central institutions of Jewish life, however, membership in congregations or other Jewish institutions is no longer an automatic assumption for feeling connected Jewishly. I believe that Temple Israel is well positioned to leverage these new trends as we lean into our communal vision of “living Judaism together through discovery, dynamic spirituality, and righteous impact.” Here are a few reasons why: First, TI has been and remains a leader in placing our focus on broader participation, reaching out to the greater Boston Jewish community through our Center for Adult Jewish Learning, Riverway, The Tent (teen collaboration), and our Families with Young Children programs. Second, we are focused on creating multiple networks of connection that reflect the individual, spiritual, and social needs of our congregants and beyond. Examples include changes to our Qabbalat Shabbat service and the new
Tent students and Rabbi Soffer in deep discussion.
Jewish Spiritual Practice Lab that supports Tefillah Groups and Mindfulness and Movement classes. And third, our lay and professional leadership understand that innovation and experimentation is the only way forward in an era that demands relevance, excellence, and connection. Rabbi Zecher’s creation of “Shabbat Awakenings,” a weekly e-letter to the congregation, is a perfect example that introduces the first important ingredient that Rabbi Sharon Brous, the creator of Ikar in L.A., identifies as needed to “reclaim religion and revitalize religious practice”— “wakefulness.” Our challenge at TI is remain focused on our aspirational vision, be aware of the opportunities and challenges in our environment, and continually evolve our thinking and experimentation to create the interconnected, vibrant Jewish community that we seek to be. * David is the founding director of CJP’s Leadership Development Institute. SHABBAT TZEDEK & MLK WEEKEND OF JUSTICE By Andy Tarsy Over five days, more than a thousand people joined in six events honoring the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and reflecting on the challenges of our own times. Each event was a point of entry to engage our members and friends in important ongoing projects. We affirmed that we are a congregation with a tremendous sense of social responsibility and a sense of urgency about learning and about doing multi-generational, relational work for social justice.
FRIDAY NIGHT. 700 people filled the Sanctuary for our annual “Shabbat Tzedek” service. Temple Israel (RYFTI) teens, Beacon Academy students, the TI Youth Choir, and the Boston Children’s Chorus provided much needed inspiration. A powerful address by Michael Curry, local and national leader of the NAACP, painted a vivid portrait of the roots of the NAACP in the early twentieth century, when lynching was commonplace and racism narrowly framed the American experience for Blacks. He spoke candidly about the simple inference of racial bias we must draw from the dramatically different experiences Whites and Blacks still have in terms of education, income, criminal justice, and more. Poignantly, he declared that “if these lives don’t matter, then it cannot be true that all lives matter.” Ralph Friedin said that “Rabbis Zecher and Soffer set the service in the context of not only remembrance of MLK but also TI’s long history advocating and acting for social justice” and “[t]he diversity of those attending took the words of the service beyond the doors, strengthening bridges to other communities. I left inspired knowing that TI joined the moral values of my Jewish heritage with my personal commitment to social activism. I walked out wanting to participate more in both the religious experience and the social activism of TI.” TI member and member of the Riverway Project leadership team, Ben Poor reflected that he “loved seeing

the packed congregation Friday night.” He said, “I feel ready to be asked to do more in this moment.”
SATURDAY MORNING. Shabbat morning Torah Study at Temple Israel is always a lively, rigorous exercise. On this occasion, the clergy guided the study session which hosted more than 50 people through topical and challenging pieces of text. TI member Serena Fujita, herself a Rabbi, commented that “[t]he rabbis led us in study of pieces of Torah that generate discussion of the how we as Jews see ‘the other’ and how the Reform movement has struggled with and updated our understanding of our text in alignment with our values.” Serena appreciated ending Torah study with words from
Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, relating to racial injustice and what should be expected from religious leaders as moral leaders of their communities.
SATURDAY EVENING. Temple Israel convened a gathering of thirty-five teens from TI and area synagogues. Emilia Diamant, of Boston’s Jeremiah Program, led a seminar on racial identity and racial justice. Discussion included concepts including privilege, code-switching, systemic oppression, and white supremacy. “Unsurprisingly,” said Assistant Director of Education Mike Fishbein, “our teens showed themselves to be deeply invested in the discussion.” The program concluded with a beautiful teen-led Havdalah service.
SUNDAY MORNING. More than 40 TI members were guests at the Bethel AME Church in Jamaica Plain where the senior pastors are husband and wife team Rev. Ray Hammond and Gloria White Hammond. TI member Sara Barcan captured the spirit of the occasion. “Church members and pastors alike made us feel immediately at ease in their glorious sanctuary. I felt energized by Bethel’s Praise and Worship Team, a group of half a dozen talented singers, and motivated by Dr. Ray Hammond’s sermon, a call to action befitting the occasion not only of Dr. King’s birth, but the end of the Obama presidency. I’m grateful for the relationship between our two congregations.”
The most important take-away from every one of the MLK Weekend of Justice events is that they are points of entry for those Justice who are ready to act with conviction and get involved. To paraphrase both the speech by Michael Curry and the words of Rev. Hammond’s sermon at Bethel, as well as the words shared throughout the weekend by our clergy, we need our people to get beyond being spectators and start taking action. We need to push ourselves to new limits, get outside of our comfort zones, get engaged emotionally, and then get engaged by taking action. MONDAY MORNING. Nearly 100 made up the TI delegation at a day of service convened by Boston Cares. Our multi-generational group worked on assembling resource kits for Boston public school classrooms that will supplement science, technology, and math curriculum. TI member Andy Lesser-Gonzalez offered this reflection: “I really enjoyed the teamwork at the tables as everyone worked together. I especially loved that my children had a chance to participate in a social justice activity that was on MLK day, was fun, and gave them hands on experience where they could see themselves making a difference for others. A highlight at one table of TI volunteers was a visit from Boston Mayor Marty Walsh.”
TUESDAY EVENING. Temple Israel hosted a screening of “13th” - a documentary by acclaimed director, Ava DuVernay (“Selma”), which traces racial injustice from slavery through mass incarceration. In his review, Ty Burr of The Boston Globe called “13th” “among the very best movies of 2016” and “probably the most important.” The film screening deepened our connection to a topic that the Criminal Justice working group, led by TI member Kathy Weinman, is tackling as part of the Temple Israel’s racial justice initiative. www.tisrael.org/insight | 617-566-3960

How Much Do You By Rabbi Elaine Zecher
“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” - Maya Angelou We have all felt it and know it when it happens: that sense that your presence, your ideas, your very being have worth. It might be the way you are greeted, responded to, or engaged. You feel seen, known, and that you matter. Allison Fine calls this “matter-ness.” In her book with the same title, she relates the power of what we are intended to be: connected, caring, curious, and capable. How we use our networks, whether they are social media, the communities with which we associate, or a group of friends help us to feel all of that. But, we are not passive bystanders to matter-ness either. Our willingness to assert ourselves as active players in our various networks strengthens the ties we have. We foster something that reaches deeper into who and what we are individually and together. Matter-ness is crucial for our synagogue. When it becomes manifest in our behavior and attitude, it becomes the thread that weaves our lives together in magnificent ways and makes us stronger. Martin Buber, the philosopher and theologian, summarized part of the essence of matter-ness by how we relate to each other. When we focus on what might be gained from the interaction, when we remain on the outer arena of inquiry, or when we seek or offer information, we most certainly are relating to another person but it does not transcend to a deeper level of knowing. When we are curious about another person, willing to be vulnerable, and open hearted in our response we grow closer to the idea of an I-Thou relationship. That is the message of matter-ness.

Matter? Others hold us with respect, honor, and integrity and we do so in return. David Brooks beautifully described Buber’s teaching when he wrote how important it is not to think of ourselves in isolation. (The New York Times, November 1, 2016). He wrote, “You can’t intentionally command I-Thou moments into being. You can only be open to them and provide fertile soil.” I would amend this idea for congregational life in that our very purpose of existence is to seek the opportunities to till the soil so that every environment is fertile for matter-ness to grow and to blossom. This is why I have challenged our Board of Trustees, Committee Chairs, Past Presidents, Honorary Trustees, Elected members of the Leadership Council, and entire staff to invite another person from our community to sit together for no other reason than to learn about each other’s lives and story. This is why I welcome your reflection and response after each “Shabbat Awakenings”. What you have to say matters very much to me. This is why I invite everyone to put away the phone at meetings, services, and onegs so that we can focus our attention on the human interaction made available to us in these encounters. This is why we have The Awesome Exhibit in the Wyner Museum space beautifully curated by Ann Abrams that shares the stories of our members.
The interplay of being connected to others, caring about whom they are, curious about their lives and actively capable of stepping forward to engage another creates a stronger and more vibrant human and humane community. We are all fortunate to be part of Temple Israel to live Judaism together and to discover the power and impact of matter-ness in our lives every day.

Being new to a community can be daunting. Finding a place that you are connected to in a way that you had been for a lifetime is almost too much to expect. From the moment we walked in we sensed TI was a special place. Rabbi Jacobson’s enthusiasm was infectious. Rabbi Zecher’s warm hello in the midst of her preparations for her installation a welcome kindness. In the few short months we have been part of the TI community these kinds of wonderfully overlapping connections continue as we meet more people.

Relationships

I’m told it was a powerful scene as TI members gathered together to share their hopes, dreams, and excitement for building and deepening relational community at Temple Israel in the Spring of 2015. Conversation was rich and energy flowed as many themes emerged, but primary among them was the “strong desire for belonging.” It was a profound outcome and equally unsurprising. Certainly in a community 1,400 families strong, it can be quite difficult to know one another’s names much less to feel truly known by others in our community. New myself, I know this feeling all too well. With a congregation that knows well community organizing’s 1:1 approach to building relationships, Rabbi Zecher sought a new relational platform through which those in TI’s orbit might connect more deeply to one another. Learning from faith communities in the ‘Mega-Church’ world, other large synagogues, and the URJ’s support – Rabbi Zecher began to develop Small Groups with Meaning. Small Groups (with meaning) is exactly what its name sounds like: small groups of people (defined by interest, age, or stage in life) who commit to gather together over an agreed upon period of time. (Small Groups) with Meaning is the essential aspect of these groups that helps bind people together. While groups can organize around anything — a book, cooking, hiking, singing, softball, Shabbat dinner, parenting, dating, aging — it is the investment in a meaningful guided conversation around life’s big questions that has the power to bind a group together. Now called Engage@TI (and part of my role at Temple Israel), I’m grateful to partner with lay leaders Lis Keller, Liz Lyster, Sally Mechur, Carol Targum, and Valerie Zimber who are truly the spirit behind this initiative. In its pilot stage, we are launching 7 initial groups between January and July, including a Mussar group, a book group, a Riverway Project

OUR “MAIDEN VOYAGE” TO ISRAEL: The Tent’s First Teen Trip to the Holy Land

This year Temple Israel has joined local synagogues and days schools in the successful “Boston/Haifa Connection,” a program that brings together teenagers from Boston and Haifa in a meaningful “mifgash,” or encounter. Nine teenagers joined Rabbi Suzie Jacobson and Assistant Director of Education Brigid Goggin for a two week trip to Israel. In March, our friends in Haifa will visit our community. Here are two reflections from trip participants to give you a window into this wonderful experience: Amanda Powers: One of the reasons that I went on the Israel trip was because I felt that as a Jew growing up in America, I was expected to have a well-defined and thought out relationship to Israel. I felt like I didn’t know enough about this country that I was supposed to love. Throughout the course of the trip, I thought a lot about the phrase “Jewish values.” For me, this has always meant social justice, community, and resilience. To a lot of the Israeli teens, Jewish values meant military service and nationalism. When we visited the Kotel to pray with Women of the Wall, I was shocked to see that to some people, Jewish values meant silencing our prayers with whistles, or trying to prevent us from praying at all. This made me very grateful for my upbringing, and my Temple Israel Jewish values, but it also made me feel disconnected from Judaism as a whole. However, since I’ve been home, I have been thinking a lot more about what I am taking away from this experience, and I am realizing that I can love Israel and still have my problems with it. I loved being in a place where everyone was Jewish, and everyone celebrated my holidays and sang my songs. I loved watching the sun rise over the Negev and I loved eating plates and plates and plates of hummus. I loved learning from all the people I met. And my Jewish values are valid and true even if they are different from other people’s.
Louie Goldsmith: I had traveled to Israel twice before. Once to visit family and again on a birthright-esque sight-seeing, camel-riding, Masada-hiking tourist extravaganza. This time, I didn’t just visit and see Israel, I truly began to understand it. This did not happen through the sheer volume of time I’ve begun to accumulate in the Holy Land, but rather because this time we talked. We talked to one another, examining our own beliefs; to our host families, coming to understand how Judaism plays into their daily lives and how the nation defines their faith; and to a diverse array of normal people from across the nation, people who differed in culture, religion and ideology, but each of whom holds complicated and valuable beliefs regarding Israel. I first came to recognize the complexity of the situation we were trying to understand, “50 shades of gray” in the words of one of our tour guides. There are no easy answers and the best place to start is simply asking the questions. As we traveled around the nation, we engaged ourselves as we engaged others. The value for me in this trip came not from places seen or even the conversations we held, but rather how we as a group examined and critiqued, agreed with and dissented from viewpoints expressed to us, finding our own place and our own beliefs about Israel. www.tisrael.org/insight | 617-566-3960

FROM THE RIVERWAY PROJECT TO FAMILIES WITH YOUNG CHILDREN

By Maura and Aidan Ackerman We started attending the Riverway Project in early 2013 and knew that we had finally found a Jewish community that felt like home. What a breath of fresh air, to meet and mingle with other Jews in their 20s and 30s in a fun, relaxed environment with great music and Rabbi Soffer’s wonderful adaptations of Torah portions to current events. We met many friends through the Riverway Project, including several couples who met and became engaged around the same time we did. I remember one couple who received wedding blessings the month before we did, and at a subsequent Riverway Project event, we traded wedding stories and showed off our rings. We felt blessed to have found this caring community of people we could connect with and wanted to give back in some way. Thus began our stint as members of the Riverway Project Leadership Team, where we were able to provide input in shaping the future of the program. Our favorite accomplishment as members of the Leadership Team was definitely the Open Bar Mitzvah – an event celebrating Riverway’s 13th anniversary that brought together several generations of Riverway Project participants. We even brewed the beer (aptly titled “Beer Mitzvah”) as part of a Shavuot class we co-taught. Shortly after our one-year wedding anniversary, Maura became pregnant and we knew that our chapter as Riverway Project attendees would soon come to a close. We were sad to say goodbye, and we couldn’t imagine leaving. However, when one door closes another truly does open, this time in the form of Temple Israel’s Families with Young Children Tot Rock Shabbat program. This monthly, family-oriented Friday night dinner and kid-friendly service is perfect for our little family of three

and a welcome way of introducing our daughter, Izzie, to Judaism. We began by attending with her as a newborn at under 3 weeks old – more for us than for her – as it was a chance to meet other Jewish families. It’s been a joy to watch Izzie begin to learn about Judaism, first just in awe of the sounds of the prayers and songs and gradually beginning to bounce, then clap, and now just starting to running around with the older children. We can’t imagine a better fit for our new life. True, we often leave Tot Rock Shabbat and see some of our old friends just heading into a Riverway Project wine and cheese social hour, and we see our previous selves reflected in them. Just possibly, they see their futures reflected in us. Trees, Tu BiSh’vat, Pesach By Roger S. Gottlieb
Tu BiSh’vat (literally the “15th day of the month of Sh’vat,” this year on February 11) is called the “New Year of the Trees.” Its origin was probably to calculate the literal age of trees, since a biblical injunction (Lev: 19:23) allows fruit gathering only from trees over three years old. In the ancient Israelite climate, the holiday was timed to mark the awakening of life in the trees, when buds begin to develop, and new leaves grow.

Trees offer comfort and wonder: bare limbs outlined against a clear January sky, the softest possible green of new leaves in late April, cool shade in August, and the breathtaking colors of early October; sources of fruit and flowers, homes to birds and bees, they clean the air and hold the soil. Our tradition recognizes the depth of these connections. Here is a caution from the great Hasidic teacher Rebbe Nachman: “If a person kills a tree before its time, it is like having murdered a soul.” The soul of the tree resides in part in what they do for us, just as the sacredness of other people resides partly in the love we receive from them.
