On the sunny, crisp Sunday morning of December 8, our TI/GBIO Core Team was welcomed by the Hartford Street Presbyterian Church in Natick for fellowship and worship, and on December 20, Hartford Street Presbyterian Reverend Katie Cole and many congregants braved the snow to join us in Qabbalat Shabbat worship and a special oneg in Slater Lounge. We came together as one community, building relationships for the common good. Stay tuned for announcements about upcoming exchange visits. We are looking for more members to join us in this fun and gratifying work! If you are interested, please contact Tali Puterman or Rabbi Dan Slipakoff.

Let me be clear. Antisemitism is bad for the Jews. But, it is not just bad for the Jews, it is bad for people everywhere. Antisemitism is not the oldest hatred in the world. Hate itself is what has a through line through history. We might say antisemitism is how people have practiced their dislike, bigotry, loathing, narrow-minded bias mixed in with paranoia and narcissism. It may also be that the Torah and Judaism remind us never to forget, but rather actively remember those who sought to destroy us as they enacted their utter hatred. In the Torah, Amalek attacked the weak and tired as the Israelites left Egypt. He was not the only one and perhaps our inclusion of those who hated and sought to destroy us continually remind us of hatred’s presence in our history. But, something else also results as part of the stories we tell during Purim and Passover. What is revealed is how anti antisemitism works.
First the hatred.
When Purim begins on March 13 in the evening, we will retell the story of how a powerful vizier to the King convinced that king to destroy the Jewish people. Haman (boo!) had a vendetta
to crush the Jews. Why? Because Mordecai refused to bow down. The king didn’t care about the end of the Jews so Haman easily could have enacted his crusade against the Jewish people. And it didn’t even matter that the befuddled King didn’t know that one of his wives, the most beloved, was Jewish.
With the story of Passover, which begins on April 12, as soon as the book of Exodus opens, we immediately encounter the hateful Pharoah, paranoid of the number and therefore, the power of Israelite slaves even though we might wonder: do slaves really ever have power? It didn’t matter. The Pharaoh was blinded by his narrow-minded bigotry. He, too, sought to destroy the enslaved Israelites by killing the male Israelite babies and later by the violent taskmasters. He, too, did not know of other Pharaohs before him who did have a strong connection with Joseph, the Israelite who saved the people from famine.
Now comes the ANTI antisemitism of the story.
In the Purim story: That Mordecai refused to bow down; that Esther stepped up in her position as queen to defend her people
showed their courage and fortitude. Saving the Jews and also Judaism from the tyrant Haman made all the difference. They had to speak up and to recognize that Judaism was and is worth saving. Without their willingness, all could have been lost.
In the Passover story: That the midwives refused to bow down to Pharoah’s wishes to kill the baby boys; that Miriam saved her brother Moses; that Pharoah’s daughter rescued the baby Moses; and that Moses grew into the role of prophet as the one who would help to ensure God’s power to redeem the Israelite people from slavery altered the course of Jewish history. Most importantly, the people would cross over into freedom, transform into a community and bring life to Judaism through Torah.
It is not just the necessity of fending off those filled with hatred throughout our journeys, it takes something more powerful. It takes each of us to stand up and even stand out and to assert the value and values inherent in Judaism. That is what matters.
Without a thriving, celebratory, and meaningful Jewish experiences like those we engage in at Temple Israel of Boston, antisemitism can fester and grow without limit. Yes, we need those to name it and call it out as nefarious and unproductive, but then what? What is the reason we seek to diminish and wipe out antisemitism? It is because our Jewish tradition, its teachings and the way it marks the high and low moments of life, and our calendar of holidays carries us higher toward the sacred and toward a life of meaningful engagement. A thriving Judaism protects us all.
May the lessons of our tradition we learn through the experience of these holidays inspire us toward bravery, empathy, and lovingkindness.

Happy Purim and Passover!
Jessica Greenfield Board President
In each season of observance and celebration, and as we look towards Purim and Passover, I am continuously filled with gratitude and joy for our beloved synagogue.
Purim is a time of festivity, a reminder of the resilience and courage demonstrated by our ancestors in the face of adversity. As we marvel at the courage of Esther and Mordechai through the Megillah story and participate in joyful and whimsical Purim traditions, let us embrace the themes of individual hope, justice, and standing up for what is right.
Soon after, Passover invites us to reflect on a different but related story of what is required, as a community, to liberate ourselves from bondage and sustain our journey toward freedom. As we sit together at the seder table, recounting the Exodus tale, we renew our commitment to justice, compassion, and empathy. I hope you will join us for Temple Israel’s festive communal seder. Passover traditions remind us of our communal responsibility to build a world that is free from oppression and inequality.
At Temple Israel, we are blessed to be a community that comes together in both moments of joy and of solemn reflection. Whether we are donning costumes for Purim, learning from the seder, or supporting one another through life’s challenges, I wish you and your loved ones a joyful Purim and a meaningful Passover. I hope your experience during this season brings you closer to family, friends, and Temple Israel, strengthening our shared values, traditions, and commitment to one another.
Dan Deutsch Executive Director
As Executive Director, I am deeply connected to Temple Israel's mission every day. I cherish being part of this vibrant community and witnessing how we come together to shape a bright Jewish future while building a sense of belonging.
What I value most about Temple Israel is our collective response to societal challenges. When we identify an issue, we commit to making a difference, rallying as a community to address it. Recently, I heard Deborah Seidel, one of our Food Justice Co-chairs, speak about how this passion for action took shape. Just two years ago, a Shabbat Tzedek speaker challenged us to tackle food insecurity in Greater Boston. Deborah, along with co-chair Susan Ridker and other dedicated members, quickly mobilized. They consulted with dozens of experts to determine how Temple Israel could best contribute to this critical issue.
Today, we regularly provide meals to several local organizations, fostering connections across generations within our community. This program year alone, we’ve prepared and delivered over 1,000 meals through partnerships with organizations like the Brookline Senior Center and the Southern Jamaica Plain Health Center.
I invite you to join us for our annual Stepping Out Gala on Thursday, April 3. My thanks go to our host committee, chaired by Rachel Kogan and Josh Habib, for their leadership.
I also want to express my gratitude to the Temple Israel community for your ongoing philanthropic support, especially for contributing to our new security initiative piloted this fiscal year. Alongside our safety and security committee, our staff remains committed to keeping our community safe. I'm pleased to share that, in addition to funds raised through the security contributions, we’ve been awarded the FY25 Commonwealth Nonprofit Security Personnel Grant. This grant will enable us to continue this essential work, ensuring that we can gather onsite and fulfill our mission safely.

This year’s journey began on Friday, January 17, 2025, as we welcomed Dr. Charles Carter Jr., CEO and Head of School at Beacon Academy, to speak during our Shabbat service. Beacon Academy, now celebrating its 20th year, holds a special place in our history—having called Temple Israel home for its first 17 years. Dr. Carter inspired us with stories of resilience and the power of education to transform lives.
On Saturday morning, the spirit of learning continued with Torah Study led by Avi Edelman, a dedicated educator whose work bridges communities. Avi guided us through a powerful exploration of social justice, drawing on his experience leading civil rights pilgrimages through the American South and examining the intertwined histories of Black and Jewish communities.
Sunday brought a deep sense of connection as we joined our friends at Bethel AME for worship. Together, we celebrated Rev. Dr. King’s enduring values of justice and unity, sharing stories, music, and prayer. Following the service, we extended our fellowship over a warm and welcoming brunch, deepening bonds between our congregations.
The weekend concluded on Monday with a family volunteer day—a chance to put our shared values into action. Families gathered to prepare lunches for On the Rise Women’s Shelter, write welcome cards for newly arriving immigrants and refugees, and collect clothing for Thrifty Threads. Together, we decorated lunch bags for the Southern Jamaica Plain Health Center and assembled essential-goods bags for the local unhoused community, embodying Dr. King’s call to serve others.
This meaningful weekend was a reminder of the work still to be done and the strength we find in coming together as a community to honor his legacy.
Opportunities to volunteer with Beacon Academy are varied and deeply impactful and satisfying: from mentoring or tutoring an eighth grader to supporting the career path of a recent college grad to sharing your own professional journey and industry insights. Contact Tali Puterman or Rabbi Slipakoff who can connect you with a TI Beacon Academy partner for more information.
A vote for the Reform Movement in the World Zionist Congress elections is a vote for our values: equality, democracy, pluralism, justice, and peace in Israel, rooted in our love and support for the people and the state of Israel.
VOTE REFORM BELIEVES IN:
• A strong, secure, democratic, and Jewish Israel, as envisioned in its Declaration of Independence.
• Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish State and defend its people from terror. We oppose efforts to delegitimize this right.
• Religious equality where all Jewish traditions and forms of observance are respected, with full recognition of liberal Movements and an end to the ultra-Orthodox monopoly as the recognized religious authority.
• Regional security through peace and stability for Israel, Palestinians, and neighbors.
• Full equality under the law for all Israelis, including minorities, women, and LGBTQ+ people.
• A secure Israel alongside a peaceful Palestinian state is vital for stability.
IN SUPPORT OF THESE BELIEFS, IN THE UPCOMING WORLD ZIONIST CONGRESS ELECTIONS, THE “VOTE REFORM” SLATE PLEDGES:
• To advocate that the government of Israel does everything in its power to maintain the ceasefire and return all hostages.
• To fight for government recognition and societal acceptance of the many diverse expressions of Jewish religious identity so that all such expressions are recognized as legitimate and equal under the law and to lend its support for Reform Judaism and other liberal streams.
• To assure that liberal streams of Judaism are provided equal financial support and resources in the Jewish State, ensuring that our Movements in Israel and all Jewish denominations in Israel remain strong, vibrant, and growing.
• To support government policy and societal initiatives that pursue a lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians through a Two-State outcome.
• To influence the National Institutions (WZO, KKL, JAFI) to support a strong shared society and democratic civil society in Israel.
• To curb funding for and prevent de facto/de jure annexation of the West Bank or the resettlement of Gaza.

The Rita and Adam J. Weiner and Family Outdoor Classroom is an FJECC Preschool — and Temple Israel — treasure. Throughout all four seasons it serves as a space for play, exploration, and learning for all who spend time there. It has transformed our urban school setting into a peaceful oasis in the middle of a bustling city. “Oh, wow. I never knew this was here!” is the most common response we hear as we tour prospective families through the school and step through the backdoor to view our outdoor space. It is a playground in the classic sense, and it is so much more.
We know that children need to move their bodies, to climb and run and stretch their muscles. We also know that when we carefully and intentionally curate the materials in an outdoor environment, that movement fosters deeper and more meaningful connection to the natural world. We believe that spending time outdoors brings a sense of wonder and joy to children and helps to foster imagination, creativity, and powers of observation as well as promoting a positive environmental ethic.
We are so lucky to have access to time and space in nature, a key factor in holistic learning. And we are grateful to share this important space with the Temple Israel community. From the Religious School and the Village for Families with Young Children throughout the year, to TI Camp and Shabbat observers through the summer, this sacred space holds our spirits, our learning, and our prayers with expansive grace.

Qabbalat Shabbat Celebration
Rabbi Friedman served as the Senior Rabbi of Temple Israel of Boston from 1999 to 2016, guiding and enriching our community with his wisdom and leadership. His distinguished career also includes serving at North Shore Congregation Israel in Glencoe, Illinois, and Temple Beth Zion in Buffalo, NY.
A graduate of Lafayette College with a B.A. in English Literature, Rabbi Friedman earned his M.A. in Hebrew Literature and was ordained in 1975 by Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, which later awarded him a Doctorate of Divinity (honoris causa) in 2000.
Throughout his career, he has held numerous leadership roles, including serving on the Joint Placement Commission and the Board of the Central Conference of American Rabbis.
This year, we are honored to celebrate Rabbi Friedman’s 50 years in the rabbinate, recognizing his profound impact on our community and beyond with a special tribute and festivities in his honor.

Join us for a special evening, beginning at 6:00 p.m. with a Yom HaShoah remembrance service led by the Temple Israel Clergy as we commemorate and mourn the loss of so many lives in the Holocaust. We will then hear from Holocaust survivor, Jack Trompetter, as he shares his story and provides a powerful and personal connection between the past and present. After hearing Jack's story there will be an opportunity for Q&A and conversation. All are welcome for this full community gathering. Contact cajl@tisrael.org with questions.
Isaac Jack Trompetter was born in 1942 in Amsterdam. He spent the first three years of his life in hiding, separated from his parents. Trompetter was four months old when his parents hid him with elderly Christian fundamentalist farmers in the Netherlands. Of the period, he recalled only being rushed into a closet, where he rocked on a hobby horse and listened to bombing. The territory in which Jack’s parents were hiding was liberated in 1944, but it wasn’t until the war’s end in 1945 that they were reunited with their three-year-old son. He emigrated to New England in 1972. He is active in the greater Boston area group of child Holocaust survivors. Trompetter is an artist and lives with his wife Lucy in Cambridge.
In Our Words (IOW) is a 3-4 month process that strengthens relationships within and between Temple Israel & Bethel AME Church. IOW does this through moving artistic experience, together with best practices in social psychology.
IOW Program Schedule:

• March 7 at Temple Israel: Ten Toast Dinner with Bethel AME
• March 16 at Bethel AME: In Our Words - Rapport Building Session
• March 30 at Bethel AME: Focus on Youth Storytellers
• March 31 at Temple Israel: Focus on Adult Storytellers
• June 8, Location TBD: FINAL SHOW!
IOW culminates with a moving multimedia performance of real-world stories directed by Regie Gibson & Guy Mendilow, told by the community members of Bethel AME & Temple Israel who’ve lived them. The stories are filmed and theatrically projected together with live original narration, cinematographic score and musical segments, designed and performed by a world class artistic team (“Promised Land” event at Oprah Winfrey’s home, Boston Ballet, National Endowment for the Arts, National Poetry Slam Individual Champion, Italy’s Europa En Versi Award, Teatro Principal, Zamora Spain).
IOW will build an intergenerational portrait of both Temple Israel and Bethel AME as they are now — made with, of, and for the people making these inspiring communities what they are now. We will experiences each other’s stories to increase connection and bolster mutual support and understanding.

By Ron & Susan Ebert
For nearly ten years, classes have begun at 8:00 a.m. every Tuesday morning. Pre-Covid, we would race out by 7:30 a.m. in time to reach Temple Israel, take our seats in Slater Lounge, and study Talmud with Rabbi Suzie Jacobson. Covid sent us to remote learning on Zoom, as about fifteen of us would sign in every week to consider, discuss, and work to understand this ancient text.
Initially, Rabbi Jacobson would say, “We’re reclaiming the Talmud for the Reform movement,” as she led us through timeless rabbinic debates about the evolution of Jewish law, customs, and traditions. Bringing ancient wisdom into contemporary light, sharing diverse — and sometimes differing — points of view, we have been extending our Jewish traditions of debate and discourse to encompass modern situations and dilemmas. It is a unique opportunity to appreciate the ways in which our tradition helps us deal with the complexities of the contemporary world.
The TI Yeshiva: Learn to Read the Talmud with Rabbi Suzie Jacobson now enrolls about thirty scholars; including our original, local group and many who are now able to join us from different parts of the world, time zones, states, and countries. We are a community of seekers and scholars who eagerly anticipate these weekly exchanges aimed at helping us better understand where we have been and where we are going as contemporary Jews. We agree and respectfully disagree, laugh, and parse our way to understanding.

For more than 165 years, Temple Israel has provided a home to the Boston Jewish community. We are proud to uplift our spirits in song, to unite in our commitment to justice, and to serve as a refuge in times of joy and in times of sorrow.
The Ner Tamid is the light that shines above the ark in every synagogue of the world, a symbol of our presence and determination to sustain our traditions, even as we respond to change. The Ner Tamid Society honors supporters who perpetuate the legacy of Temple Israel. By including Temple Israel in your estate plans, you ensure that the eternal light continues to burn strongly for generations to come.
With your bequest or other planned gift to Temple Israel, you become a member of the Ner Tamid Society. Your name will be inscribed in the Ner Tamid Society honor roll, and you will be invited to events exclusively for Ner Tamid Society members. Join us, and be part of a legacy that lives on in every generation of Temple Israel.
