Preparations for the High Holy Days for me begin weeks and weeks before the sun sets on Rosh Hashanah, but much of that involves crafting meaningful worship services and learning opportunities during Elul. However, on Erev Rosh Hashanah, during services, when we settle in and the candles are lit, and we are finally underway in the sparkly liturgy of the evening that I sing the first bit of High Holy Day nusach, (the musical theme that defines the holiday), that I melt into the experience. It's that line that transports me back to Cantor Jack Mendelsohn, my teacher in cantorial school, and it's his voice and spirit that I hear, and I know that he's with me, I am connected to him and to every cantor in the world who at that exact moment are all singing the very same melody to their own communities. And though it appears that we are each alone - that sound of the holiday weaves us together. And the world enters the new year whole.�

BOARD PRESIDENT & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

It is always hard to believe the summer is zooming by (are not we “Zooming” everywhere these days) and our annual High Holy Days will soon be here. COVID-19 has created great uncertainty in our world, and for each of us and our families. When will we be back at work in the office? Will kids be back in school physically or online? When will it be safe to return to “normal life”? We have no better answers for these questions than anyone else.

What we do know is Temple Israel has been nimble and innovative, and fully “open” throughout the past months, as we have for the past 166 years. While we were not meeting in person or in our beloved building, we have been supporting each other, praying, learning, and singing through the internet. We have widened our appeal, offerings, and our audience. Our community has remained vital and engaged, each of us holding up each other.

We have joyously, and with a little sadness, bid farewell to Cantor Roy Einhorn after 37 years as he and Jodi enter their retirement.

This summer we have welcomed Cantor Alicia Stillman with her incredible voice, spirit, and excitement to get to know us as she becomes the integral member of our TI community, we had no doubt she quickly would. We have enjoyed the enthusiasm and teaching of our Rabbinic Intern Andrew Oberstein, who will remain with us through this year, as well as the incredible work, teaching and love of our entire Clergy team.

These have not been easy months, but our clergy, staff, and congregation have risen to the circumstances and kept Temple Israel in the forefront of our lives, minds, and hearts. If you have not yet had an opportunity to renew your membership, we ask that you do so now. These are challenging times for us all and for our institutions, Temple Israel included. The High Holy Days will not be exactly as they have been for us before. We will experience new traditions, prayer, and service offerings, new ways to connect, reflect, and recharge. I hope you and your family will join us in all that we can offer. We pray for the wellness of our community, our society and for our world. Shanah Tovah!

Reform Judaism has always been about taking ancient traditions and helping them meet the modern times through innovative thinking. Temple Israel of Boston has a rich history of leading the way with creativity and new ideas through the generations. Though this pandemic has been difficult on so many levels, we at TI are always trying to see opportunities in the challenges, and use this as a catalyst for exciting change. We remain fully committed to our mission: living Judaism together through discovery, dynamic spirituality, and righteous impact.

Our staff and lay-leaders have been working hard to make sure that our congregation continues to connect and form community in new and interesting ways in this time of physical distancing. As we have further developed our online programming, we have felt the full support of our congregation. Seeing so many of you participate in our virtual offerings has given us the energy to press on through this difficult time. I am so grateful to all of you for continuing your commitment to TI through being involved with programs, fiscal support, and being there for each other.

Right now, we need the High Holy Days more than ever. Their focus on introspection, on growth, and on community are essential values that will make us all even stronger in this unusual time. Together our clergy and staff have paved the way for exciting and innovative opportunities that will allow our community and those beyond our walls to lean in and go through the personal reflection that takes place through the month of Elul. We hope that you will be inspired by our congregational journey through the fall holidays and I look forward to being with you, on screen or in person, whenever we can.

A HIGH HOLY DAY MESSAGE

The end of the story is filled with holiness. The beginning grips us with trembling and awe. In these times, we are living the story of one of the main liturgical experiences of the High Holy Days. Right in the middle of the central section of our service, we declare: Let us proclaim the power of this day—a day whose holiness awakens deepest fear and amazement.

The prayer poem known as Unetaneh Tokef challenges and summons us to a stark recognition: we live in an illusion of complete control. These past months have taught us this truth.

In a few weeks, we will arrive to Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur ten days later.

On Rosh Hashanah, it is written; and on Yom Kippur this is sealed: How many will pass away from this world, how many will be born into it: who will live and who will die.

A litany follows of possible causes of death: fire, water, war, beast, famine, drought, strangling, stoning. And yet Unetaneh Tokef also ponders how we will live our lives: with rest and with wander, with tranquility and with trouble, with calm and with torment, with humility and with exaltation. How will we face the challenges, tragedies, and triumphs of our existence, especially now?

This poem, in particular, offers the recognition that we are the authors of our Book of Life and Judaism itself helps to compose the contents. Through rediscovering our best self and our connection to that which is sacred—T'shuvah, to the experience of prayer—T’filah, and to take responsibility of taking care of one another and the world—Tzedakah, we transcend even the darkest moments.

Immediately after the poem, come words of holiness of the Divine reflected back in our own humanity. We recognize our place in the universe and aspire toward lovingkindness.

We cannot predict exactly what the future will bring, but we do know these High Holy Days offer us the resources to approach them with hope and possibility. Whatever fear we possess, let it be uplifted by awe, wonder, and gratitude as we move toward the New Year and whatever follows.

Choose one pathway, or choose them all; This is your 5781 High Holy Day journey.

PATHWAY 1: SELF-GUIDED EXPLORATION Elul is a month that awakens us to prepare ourselves for the High Holy Day season. We do this through reading, reflection, prayer, and singing. This year, we have created a library of interactive High Holy Day materials for you to explore. Launching on our website, www. tisrael.org, on August 21, you will be able to journey through the High Holy Days at your own pace through various thematic lenses, or build your own High Holy Day experience based on which materials in the online library are most meaningful to you.

PATHWAY 2: VIRTUAL HIGH HOLY DAY SERVICES While we will not be gathering physically this year, the clergy will bring the majesty and tradition of the High Holy Days into the homes of hundreds of congregants for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Find comfort in the familiar and be inspired by innovation, as we bring a high-quality live worship experience to you. There are no physical tickets this year. Links to participate in all of these High Holy Day services will be emailed to all Temple Israel members. We will provide call-in phone numbers to non-computer users.

We ask that your membership is up to date. If the costs of membership present a hardship, please contact Dan Deutsch, Executive Director, at 617-566-3960, to discuss how we can help.

PATHWAY 3: VIRTUAL SMALLER GROUP GATHERINGS Membership of the Temple Israel community is required. Group registration will be available on our website.

• Smaller Spiritual Preparation Groups in the Month of Elul: In preparation for the High Holy Days, we identify ways in which we would like to “return” to our best selves in the year to come. These spiritual preparation groups, which are layled, will gather 10-12 congregants who commit to attending four sessions of meaningful conversation, relevant learning, and relational connections. Groups include our Book Groups for our Congregational Read of Ibram X. Kendi's How to be an Antiracist, Poetry, Spiritual Fitness & Cooking Preparation.

• Smaller Virtual T’filah Groups on the High Holy Days: Dig deeper into the High Holy Days on the holidays themselves, and strengthen relationships with other Temple Israel members in small interactive gatherings. Groups are limited to 24 participants or fewer.

THE THREE PURSUITS:

T 'shuvah, T 'filah, and Tzedakah

On both Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we read the liturgical poem Unetaneh Tokef, as we acknowledge the holy significance of the day at hand. The poem paints a picture of the Day of Judgment and offers vivid descriptions of the uncertainty which presides over the lives and deaths of all humankind. However dark and chaotic at times, Unetaneh Tokef ends with a pathway towards light and life:

' But through Tshuvah, T'filah, and Tzedakah, we can transcend the harshness of the decree.

Though we often look at these three pursuits as ways to stave off our destruction, consider a reframe, in which practicing T'shuvah, T'filah, and Tzedakah allow us to define our lives by our quest for righteousness, like these members of our Temple Israel community:

T'SHUVAH

Our quest to return. Return to our best selves, return to the right path, return towards a state of wholeness. The process takes us through honest self-discovery to ownership of our missteps towards efforts to heal wounds.

Tatiana Williams-Rodriguez

This June, I co-facilitated a discussion on race and racism between White Ashkenezi Jews and Jews of Color (JOCs) with Tali Puterman. I was honored and excited to take on this endeavor as TI has been a home for me for the past three years. Navigating TI as a JOC has its challenges, and in light of our nation’s recent injustices, these kinds of conversations are vital. I was happy to build community with other JOCs and create space for us to share our experiences. We discussed the questions “What do you want White Jews at TI to know about us?” and “What do you need from White Jewish TI Community?” The conversation was rich—many things resonated with each other and it was clear that we had just scratched the surface! Having conversations, creating space, and building community is one way we all can embrace and embody the concept of tikkun olam, doing our part, little by little, in repairing the world.

I got my start in social justice at TI about 5 years ago when I was a student in the Religious School. I was able to lobby several times with the help of Rabbi Soffer and Tali Puterman. At that time my primary focus was school funding and immigration reform. In time, however, I realized that the number one issue to focus on is environmental reform because of how interconnected the issue is. Now, as a general coordinator of the Boston Climate Strike team I have figured out that to truly save the environment we must overhaul the American democratic system.

While our government serves corporations and fossil fuel interests, the environment will never be free from harm. Through the overhaul of our system we can also attack the several other problems our country faces, from healthcare to systemic racism.

I am so honored to have been a part of the Justice League Anti-Racist Internship that took place this past June with 16 interns from grades 5-7. We focused on what it means to be anti-racist - to actively dismantle racism in its many forms. We explored White privilege, structural racism, and our own awareness of our racial identities. It was incredible working with and learning from these amazing young people. They brought varied experiences, perspectives, and knowledge to our conversations. Doing this work as a white person is an ongoing process of making mistakes, learning, and striving towards doing it better. This is not work that can be done perfectly, especially not by a white person. This is t'shuvah. It means doing the work, but doing it better next time. It means trying again and again to find the elusive balance between the contradictions. But, unlike the t'shuvah of the High Holy Days, this t'shuvah is not about me, my holiness, or my righteousness. It is about the pursuit of justice. Tzedek, tzedek tirdof.

T'FILAH

Our quest to elevate. Through our prayers and spirituality we lift our daily concerns into a realm of the sacred. By ritualizing and sanctifying our response to the world around us, we create holiness on both individual and communal levels.

Last year, I heard a group of children speak at our temple—their parents were being deported. To hear them speak about all the hardship they and their parents go through on a daily basis made me scream on the inside. These kids were about the same age as me, yet they had to be so much stronger because of all of the obstacles they had already faced. I knew right then and there I had to do my part to make this country a better place for them. Right now in Massachusetts, undocummented immigrants cannot get drivers’ licenses. Driving is a necessity, it’s how we get to doctors appointments, to work, to school, everywhere! If an undocumented immigrant is in a vehicle that is stopped by the police, they could be ripped apart from their family and deported back to the very place they tried to escape. I have been working with an organization that is trying to pass a law that would allow undocummented immigrants to get a license. This law will allow them to drive without fear. Other states have already passed this law and expect better safety on the road and economic benefits from people paying license fees. While this would change many immigrants’ lives in Massachusetts, it is just one small step toward reaching equality for immigrants in America.

Andy Lesser Gonzalez

As parents, Meredith and I strive to instill Jewish values into our three children. The most important for me is Tikkun Olam, repairing the world, standing up for justice. It is also essential that we protect our children from harm and teach them about the realities of the world around them and how they need to act in it to survive.

I never realized these values could be in conflict until I heard my 11 year old son Mateo's words as he spoke at the Shabbat of Mourning and Healing about what it was like to be a "black boy growing up in a mainly white area." Mateo talked about how hard it was to stand up and make a difference when he is constantly told to "be careful of what he says and does so that he can stay safe." Listening to the world from his view, I realized that the challenges we all face of changing a system from within will always pose the question of “How?" How does my son stand up for change in the world, while being subservient in order to stay safe and not be seen as a threat for challenging authority? How do we fight to defund police while staying close to and supporting our friends and family in uniform? How do we fight for fair housing and stop gentrification while wanting to raise our standard of living and improve our neighborhoods? The list goes on and on. The question posed by my 11 year old is a question we all must find the answer to if we are to make change in the world and move closer to the world as it should be.

- Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel after marching for voting rights with Rev. Martin Luther King in Selma In March 1965, Rabbi Heschel answered the call to join Dr. King. In August, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was enacted, prohibiting voting practices that discriminate on the basis of race, color or other named minority group membership and establishing mechanisms for federal enforcement of voting rights. But the fight is not over. After the Supreme Court gutted the Act in 2013, many states adopted practices that disproportionately suppress the votes of people of color, including closing polling places, purging voter rolls, failing to process registrations or send absentee ballots, and more.

Combating voter suppression is essential to our democracy. In July, over 135 members of Temple Israel answered the call. With the leadership of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, congregants are reaching out through postcards and telephone calls to voters, particularly voters of color in 6 target states for the nonpartisan Reclaim Our Vote campaign organized by the Center for Common Ground. TZEDAKAH

Our quest for equity. The righteous sharing of our resources, skills, time, and space creates opportunities for all. Through the covenanted relationships inherent in tzedakah, we level the mountains and fill in the valleys which for too long have created divides across our communities.

Thel Klein

My involvement in economic justice at Temple Israel has provided a dual pathway, giving me the opportunity to use my passion for justice while increasing my connection to TI. I have long been involved in addressing the economic dimensions of racial justice, dating from my organizing mothers on welfare decades ago to help them get increased benefits and more money. Perhaps what is most appealing about my TI involvement is both developing and sustaining new relationships with black entrepreneurs, and the tangible results of having TI and its members spend money in the black community. Tzedakah, meaning righteousness or justice, can so readily translate into our economic justice work. Shifting our thinking and then our behaviors on how we give, can be a straightforward way to make a difference. Changing the way we spend money by frequenting and intentionally purchasing from black owned businesses is a relatively easy change to make. We have lists of businesses and have now developed an online shuk for these Covid times. Please join us in making changes to the way you spend and by so doing, transferring money to people of color.

What does it take to remake myself? To really see what I am, remember with whom and where I need to stand, rebuild my boat to fit my intention, and once again set off? As I gather courage, can I hold to hope for amazement along my way?

Maybe you too feel poised on the edge of possibility.

Some inspiration: our GBIO is "refounding." In reaching for justice, together we felt the press of racism, looked within, and began to reimagine our vessel. We gained white and Black co-chairs and a capacious vision of diverse membership with whom to choose coordinates and navigate powerfully. Healthcare reform zeroed in on fixing the disproportionate impact of Covid on communities of color. Criminal justice reform pivoted after George Floyd to a laser focus on police accountability.

So, here we stand, amazed. We've caught the current of the rolling waters of justice and, newly made, press ahead.

MITZVOTERS—a giving circle consisting of friends from college—began in 2017 from a simple concept: that together, we can do so much more than we can alone. Since then, my 14 friends and I have donated more than $25,000 to 40 individuals and organizations. Most recently, we galvanized our college community to support a restaurant in Colorado Springs during COVID-19, funding over 750 meals, which were then donated to a youth homeless shelter and individuals in need. After the murder of George Floyd, we decided to commit $400 per month toward organizations fighting for racial justice. Right now, words from the Pirkei Avot are inspiring me greatly: "You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to desist from it." Together, we can do more. We must do more.

Last year's #10Days10Ways energized me and provided a framework for cheshbon hanefesh as never before. Diverse racial justice agendas complimented my personal Jewish journey and years of evolving consideration of racial identity, Jewish white privilege, racism, and race relations. Even on familiar topics, well-chosen readings expanded my comprehension of complexities and forced me to confront uncomfortable perspectives.

Art can be a very powerful entry point into difficult emotions or conversations. Some of us can connect more viscerally to our core emotional state when we draw out our emotion more than we can by verbally expressing that emotion. The artistic invitations for #10Days10Ways are other sources for reflecting on our own feelings, prejudices, thoughts, and experiences.

Growing up as a white Jew in N.H., I knew the 10 days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur was a time to stop, think deeply, and atone with the personal goal of doing better over the next year. It was only at TI, that I heard our Rabbis ask, “Al Cheyt… How have we as a community transgressed?” This notion of collective reflection with personal and communal responsibility led me to help create #10Days10Ways. Let’s work together to listen, learn, and act to become antiracist partners in the pursuit for racial justice.

The #10Days10Ways Racial Justice reflection helped me focus on ways that my implicit biases affect who I am, what I do, and how racism is embedded into medical student teaching. Looking over and then revising our syllabus, small group material, and lecture material I began to realize how inaccurate language regarding race, gender, ethnicity, and substance abuse disorders, amongst other issues, perpetuates implicit biases that negatively affect student teaching and ultimately patient care.

For three years now #10Days10Ways has offered me a safe space, on social media, to reframe, to reflect, and to speak openly about my relationship with racial injustice and inequality. It has also granted me the rare opportunity to hear directly from other members of Temple Israel who are also grappling with their thoughts and feelings around race and racism in our complicated world. #10Days10Ways has given the sound of the shofar blast a new meaning for me. What I hear now during those days of awe is a call to action, I hear a call to speak up, I hear a call to share those things about myself as a Jew of Color that might make others feel uncomfortable.

More Ways to Engage in the High Holy Day Season S’LICHOT - SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12

On the High Holy Days, we have several pathways towards repentance, prayer, and just action. S’lichot is our doorway to this meaningful journey. With Torah, prayer, and community, we begin to pose the eternal questions of our existence as we return to our best selves. As the sun sets, the clergy will lead us in hybrid experience: from our homes and also in-person, at an outdoor location.

S’LICHOT PREPARATORY SESSIONS, 5:30 P.M., 6:30 P.M., AND 7:30 P.M. Connect with other members as we prepare our minds, bodies, and souls for the High Holy Days. Session details are available on our website.

CANDLELIT, OUTDOOR SERVICE, 8:30 - 9:00 P.M. With battery-lit candles, music, and repentant meditation, we dress our Torah in white, ritually preparing it and ourselves for our season of holiness. We will be practicing social distancing and masks are required. Stay tuned for registration. Location provided upon registration.

S’LICHOT ZOOM SERVICE, 9:30 P.M. We gather in virtual space to sing and pray together our beautiful S’lichot liturgy.

CONGREGATIONAL READ How to be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi

Ibram X. Kendi's concept of antiracism reenergizes and reshapes the conversation about racial justice in America--but even more fundamentally, points us toward liberating new ways of thinking about ourselves and each other. Instead of working with the policies and system we have in place, Kendi asks us to think about what an antiracist society might look like, and how we can play an active role in building it. Gather in community to enter the new year with deepened commitment to antiracism. In partnership with TIkkun Central’s Racial Justice Initiative, congregants are invited to gather in lay-led small groups to prepare for the High Holy Days to discuss, reflect, and act on the concepts in Kendi's book, with an option for caucus spaces if desired. We encourage participants to purchase books from the Frugal Bookstore in Nubian Square, a local black-owned bookstore. PARTNERSHIPS OF SUMMER 2020

Through this pandemic, Temple Israel is proud to have had an opportunity to partner with Fresh Food Generation, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and Beacon Academy. Being able to open our doors and make an impact on our greater community in a time of deep need has been incredibly meaningful to all of us.

FRESH FOOD GENERATION Four years ago, our Racial and Economic Justice Initiatives started working on making conscious decisions on how we spend our money, specifically working to support Black-owned businesses.

We began a relationship with a food business called Fresh Food Generation when we placed their very first catering order. Fresh Food Generation is focused on bringing fresh, healthy, and affordable food into Boston’s neighborhoods. Once the pandemic began, Fresh Food Generation lost their cooking and preparation space. We were thrilled to have Fresh Food Generation to call our kitchen their home since April.

In just a few short months, Fresh Food Generation has prepared over 30,000 meals and grocery bags for those in need. They have been able to provide meals to some of our city’s most vulnerable citizens. Most recently, Fresh Food Generations’ staff have been working on the Food Project which has their team taking locally-farmed produce and serving meals to families in Chelsea and East Boston who are facing severe food insecurity.

CANTOR EINHORN'S BETH ISRAEL DEACONESS MEDICAL CENTER IMPACT ON HUNDREDS OF B'NEI MITZVAH In early March, we learned that the area hospitals needed to secure space for various logistics STUDENTS... and storage needs in order to retrofit space and secure resources to handle the pressures of the pandemic. We were able to connect with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and entered an agreement for them to store equipment in our facility. While the TI community was unable to gather together physically in our building, we knew that our facility could still serve an important purpose. Our Longwood neighborhood has been the epicenter of the COVID-19 response, and we feel proud to be able to support our community in this way.

BEACON ACADEMY This summer we hosted Beacon Academy’s incoming class for their summer session. With the CDC, City of Boston, and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts setting standards for operating during the pandemic, TI worked with our own Reopening Advisory Committee to ensure that Beacon Academy would be able to operate safely through COVID-19 challenges. We have collaborated closely to ensure that proper safety protocols are implemented and followed, and are proud that Temple Israel has been able to be home for the new Beacon Academy class.

DONATE TO TZEDAKAH ROW. Each year we select several organizations for a communal tzedakah project. While you are on-site, please consider a donation into one of the tzedakah boxes in the Atrium.

EXPLORATION. Launching on our website, www.tisrael.org, on August 21, the first of Elul, you will be able to journey through the High Holy Days at your own pace through various thematic lenses, or build your own High Holy Day experience based on which materials in the online library are most meaningful to you.

While we will not be gathering physically this year, the Temple Israel Clergy will bring the majesty and tradition of the High Holy Days into the homes of hundreds of congregants for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Find comfort in the familiar and be inspired by innovation, as we bring a high-quality live worship experience to you, streamed from the Sanctuary and Levi Auditorium.

MISHKAN HANEFESH. We have made arrangements to lend out copies of Mishkan HaNefesh, the Reform Movement machzor for the High Holy Days. Books will be lent out at the end of the summer while supplies last, and we ask that you return them after the High Holy Days.

NEILA. Yom Kippur will conclude with a virtual Neila service on September 28 at 4:30 p.m.

OUTDOOR S’LICHOT SERVICE. With candles, music, and repentant meditation, we dress our Torah in white, ritually preparing it and ourselves for our season of holiness. We will be practicing social distancing and masks are required. Stay tuned for registration.

PATHWAY. We have created three pathways to experience the High Holy Days: Self-Guided Exploration, Smaller Group Gatherings, and Larger Virtual Worship Gatherings. Choose one, or choose them all - this is your 5781 High Holy Day experience!

VIRTUAL LEARNING AND INNOVATION AT TEMPLE ISRAEL

By Roberta Bergstein and Fallon Rubin When the Clergy and Education team first learned of COVID-19 and it became clear how serious the virus was, we realized we needed to shut down in-person programming and move online. We agreed that our central goal must remain the same: to provide a meaningful Jewish education while building a joyful and connected community. In March we did just that, bringing our Religious School and teen programs virtual in just a few days. While the virtual learning environment was certainly new to us, our educators did not miss a beat, and they rose to the occasion and redesigned our curriculum to fit the virtual environment. Our Zoom rooms had an exciting and palpable energy. The Sunday morning energy and busy hallways of 477 Longwood wasn’t gone, it just moved onto Zoom!

For the fall, we are holding on to that energy and our central goal of creating a joyful and connected community. We are spending our summer creating a meaningful and joyful Jewish community that is flexible, creative, and also responsible.

In both the religious school and teen program, we will have hybrid models: meeting both on zoom and in person where possible. Temple Israel is a loving, supportive place for your child and family and, during this pandemic, we are committed to responding to the crisis in real time and doing our very best to meet each student where they are.

FRANCES JACOBSON EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER UPDATE ON REOPENING The faculty, administration, and the FJECC Board of Directors look forward to welcoming children back to the classroom in the fall for the 2020-2021 school year.

The health and welfare of our community continues to remain a top priority in our planning to reopen our school. As such, we are in constant contact with the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) and other local health agencies. Hundreds of hours of research, design, and debate have been invested in the planning phase to reopen our school.

The plan FJECC has put into place far exceeds the latest guidelines provided by our regulating authority. Classes will be much smaller with only ten students and two teachers at the helm. While there will be many new protocols put into place in order to help keep our students and staff safe, it is nevertheless with a great deal of excitement and anticipation that we look forward to reopening our center!
