BOARD PRESIDENT & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
As we approach our annual High Holy Days, we collectively move from a more relaxing time of our year into a more hectic one. The Holy Days offer us many opportunities to reacquaint ourselves with our Temple Israel community. The variety of spiritual, learning, and social events allow us to engage in a myriad of meaningful ways. For many of us it is an annual homecoming, when we find ourselves happily enmeshed with friends and family, learning and work, community engagement and social endeavors (both social justice and social enjoyment). For those of you with whom I have not engaged since the Annual Gathering in June, I want to express my appreciation to the Temple Israel community for allowing me to serve as the President of the Congregation and the Board of Trustees. My own journey to and with Temple Israel has been both spiritually and personally rewarding in ways I never imagined it could or would be. My wish for the coming year 5780 is that all of us at Temple Israel can find the community, learning, spirituality and peace that I have found there. If each of us invests just a bit of ourselves, our time, energy and resources into our community, we may collectively nurture the innovation, vitality, and spiritual community we all desire. Please join us in strengthening Temple Israel as the beacon and hub of Learning, Justice and Engagement it already is. I hope to see and interact with you all at Temple Israel in the coming weeks and months. L'shalom,
What a terrific spring and summer we had at Temple Israel! We welcomed 5 new members to the Board of Trustees, revised our bylaws, and began working with our remarkable new President Marc Maxwell. Our Annual Friends Fund reached an all-time record of $515,000 thanks in part to all of our donors and as well as the leadership of Leah Rosovsky, our Development Strategy Committee Chair, and Shoshanna Goldberg, our Development Director. Welcome to Temple Israel's Newly Elected Board and Leadership Council Members Marc Maxwell, President Marc Maxwell has been an active Temple Israel congregant since 1990. Professionally, Marc is an architect and runs his own firm, Maxwell Architects, LLC, and has his Masters in Architecture from MIT. He resides in Somerville, MA. Laurence Bailen, Vice President Laurence Bailen has been a member of Temple Israel since 1979. He became a Bar Mitzvah with Rabbi Mehlman in 1980 and was active in RYFTI during high school. Professionally, Laurence is a physician at Newton-Wellesley Hospital and Associate Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine. Barbara Cevallos, Treasurer Barbara is the Assistant Vice President and University Controller for the University of Massachusetts System. Barbara and her family have been TI members since 2011. Ellen Clegg, Board of Trustees In a journalism career that spanned more than three decades at The Boston Globe, Ellen Clegg held a variety of senior editing positions in the newsroom and served as editor of the Editorial Page from 2014 to 2018. Ellen and her spouse, Ellen J. Zucker, have been members of Temple Israel since 1997. Jessica Greenfield, Board of Trustees Jessica is a lifelong member of Temple Israel and current Chief Financial and Administrative Officer of City Year Inc.She and her husband Paul Hummel are the proud parents of Hannah and Theo, who were both named and celebrated their B’nei Mitzvah at Temple Israel.
Sandy Starr, Board of Trustees Sandy Starr joins the Temple Israel Board of Trustees after many years on the Finance Committee and a year on the Leadership Council. Professionally, Sandy practices real estate and business law at Schlesinger and Buchbinder, LLP in Newton. Sandy lives in Cambridge. Marc Zimman, Board of Trustees Marc Zimman joined Temple Israel in 2012 with his wife, Sarah, and two daughters when their family relocated to Brookline from New York City. Marc is an investment portfolio manager at PAR Capital in Boston and he currently serves on the Temple Israel Investment Committee. Nick Morse, Leadership Council Abraham (Nick) Morse joined TI when he returned to his home town of Brookline in 2010. Before moving to China in 2016 with his family, Nick was was part of the TI and GBIO healthcare team. Currently, he continues to travel to China to train physicians. He is married to Loren Watson and has two sons Eli (16) and Isaac (15). Jennifer Grella, Leadership Council Jennifer Grella and her husband Marc joined Temple Israel in 1997. They have two sons, Aaron (junior in college) and Ethan (senior in high school), each of whom were named, attended religious school, and became Bar Mitzvah at TI. She volunteers with Boston Rescuing Leftover Cuisine and has recently started a small business as a downsizer and organizer.

A High Holy Day Message from Rabbi Zecher: CROSS OVER, DESCEND, ASCEND, AGAIN AND AGAIN As a people with a long religious tradition, we have a shared narrative: Abram leaves, crosses over distant lands, and becomes. The children of Jacob descend to Egypt and rise up as a people partly because of how they are perceived and partly because they descend from the same family. They stand at the foot of Mt Sinai, too afraid to ascend to the heights to receive Torah. Moses takes the sacred words only to descend to find heresy and fear and the calf. And they cross over, leave, and become a people again into the land of great promise. Only to descend, ascend, and cross over again to Babylonia, return, descend, and ascend as the story of our people continues. Throughout it all, we find our own story within the narrative of a people. In a few short weeks, we gather for the High Holy Days. We approach this time recognizing that through the story of our lives, each one of us leaves and becomes, ascends and descends at different moments. Our lives are full of joy and despair, great heights and deep darkness and times when we feel stability. As the moon of Elul turns into the new moon of Tishrei, our own narrative begins anew and recalls a past that comes with us. We are not victims to a narrative allotted to us, but have great internal power to create and recreate it again and again. We can find the truths of our lives as we reflect, search our souls, and become honest about our perceptions about ourselves and others. Menachem Mendl of Kotzk explained that a truth is not necessarily only as things appear, but stems from the depths of the heart, from the sources of one’s

faith. Truth and faith go hand in hand, and a person does not acquire truth easily and by a superficial glance. What it takes is hard work and effort, wisdom and understanding. These sacred moments at this time of year demand the hard work of introspection. Our liturgy carries and challenges us to search the depths of our hearts and souls to reveal the truths of our lives and face them with courage, new insights, and strength. That recognition leads us to revise and rewrite our personal story and to right the wrongs, as we become what we hope we can be and be better.
"Let us hold on to this time of the year as a sacred opportunity to align our lives with our truths and faith in Jewish tradition and ourselves. In our own voice amidst the community, we reflect how we leave and become, ascend and descend, and

Moral Grandeur and Spiritual Audacity BY ABRAHAM JOSHUA HESCHEL RABBI ABRAHAM JOSHUA HESCHEL, one of the leading Jewish theologians and philosophers of the 20th century, deeply believed that we live in a world where God is in search of humanity. To Heschel, doctrine was unimportant compared to religious wonder, gratitude, and acts of kindness, as "God is waiting for us to redeem the world.'' Born in Poland and a refugee to America during the Holocaust, much of Heschel's work is influenced by the complex spiritual and political milieu of his time. Rather than succumbing to fear or pessimism, Heschel's writings push us all towards a spirituality of hope and call upon us to continue the prophetic tradition of our ancestors. This High Holy Day season, the Temple Israel community will dive into a collection of his important essays, entitled Moral Grandeur and Spiritual Audacity. S’LICHOT from 8:15 p.m. On three principles the world is sustained: judgment, truth, and peace. We start on this pathway of thought on S’lichot, our moonlit gathering, which draws us into these Days of Awe. With candles illuminating our path, we begin to pose the eternal questions of our existence. Through exploration, forgiveness, and apology, we return to our best selves. As the sun sets, the clergy will lead us in our culmination of our spiritual preparation for the High Holy Days. 8:15 p.m. - Join us as we gather for a discussion over dessert of our Congregational Read: Moral Grandeur and Spiritual Audacity by Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel 9:30 p.m. - We enter the High Holy Days with a candle-lit service.
Mondays, September 16 and 23 from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. No Cost Prayer is not a spectator sport, and it’s not always easy to feel at home in a Jewish ritual life. The Spiritual Practice Lab is a space to discover, through learning and practice, the spiritual voice that is most meaningful to you. During Elul, we will explore two ritual traditions of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur with creativity and openness as we prepare ourselves for the High Holy Day season. Weiss, the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Provost and Associate Professor of Bible at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. She is co-editor of American Values, Religious Voices: 100 Days, 100 Letters (University of Cincinnati Press, 2019) and associate editor of The Torah: A Women's Commentary (CCAR Press, 2008). She has written Figurative Language in Biblical Prose Narrative: Metaphor in the Book of Samuel (Brill, 2006) and numerous articles on biblical poetry, metaphor, and other topics.

What makes Psalm 23 (“Adonai is my shepherd…”) one of the most compelling biblical texts? Why did Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. quote Amos 5:24 in his “I Have a Dream” speech: “Let justice roll down like water, and righteousness like a mighty stream”? The answer to these questions lies in the enduring power of metaphor. We will examine how the rich corpus of metaphors contained in the Bible yields important insights about how our ancient ancestors thought about God and the world around them, plus meaningful resources for us as well.
Saturday, October 19, 9:00 a.m. Torah Study: Sukkot and the Shared Value of Caring for the Vulnerable
The Sukkot holiday centers around the building of a sukkah, a temporary dwelling that reminds us of life’s vulnerability. One of the values shared by multiple faith traditions is an insistence on caring for the vulnerable. We will explore a range of religious texts on this topic and some of the American Values, Religious Voices letters that connect these sacred teachings to our own time and place.
Saturday, October 19, 4:00 p.m. Havdalah Learning: Is There “Nothing New Under the Sun”? Ecclesiastes and the Quest for Meaning in Life
Commentator Michael Fox describes the biblical book of Ecclesiastes, which we read from on Sukkot, as “a strange and disquieting book” that “gives voice to…the pain and frustration engendered by an unblinking gaze at life’s absurdities and injustices.” We will delve into the wisdom offered by an ancient sage who, thousands of years later, can help us make sense of our lives.
TEMPLE ISRAEL SECURITY UPDATE This year saw the formation of the Temple Israel Security Advisory Group. It consists of a small number of interested congregants (Frank Friedman, Stephanie Pearl, Richard Kalish, Jonathan Miller, and Marianna Drootin), meeting with Executive Director Dan Deutsch regularly to review existing TI security measures and to evaluate additional steps to be implemented going forward. Safety of the community in a warm inclusive sanctuary is our primary goal. Seven steps that we have already sought to address include: • Improving signage and overall emergency preparedness • Developing a curriculum for the TI Ambassador program • Pursuing a Homeland Security grant for additional congregational resources—we got it!! • Ensuring inclusion and addressing implicit bias • Partnerships with law enforcement and security experts • Continuing to work with and evaluate security training programs for teachers, staff, and congregants • Mindfulness and “congregational ownership” Let’s all work together to ensure Temple Israel’s safety and security. Our members are our most important resource in keeping us as a welcoming community and as a safe one. Mindfulness is key: If you see anything of immediate concern while in the building, please notify the front desk personnel. This June, in honor of Temple Israel Cemetery’s annual Commemoration Service, we examined the lives of some extraordinary women throughout Temple Israel’s history. Therese Goulston was a woman of talent, grace and passion, and was beloved by her community. Born in Prussia in 1848, she immigrated to the United States where she and her husband, Edward, joined Temple Israel. Therese raised six children, including Edward Jr., who would go on to found Goulston & Storrs, a successful law firm. Therese was not only a talented pianist, but she worked tirelessly for charitable efforts, eventually forming the Jewish Prisoners’ Aid Society. She served and led numerous TI committees and was one of the first female trustees. Therese was well-known and wellloved at Temple Israel, so much so that more than 500 people attended her surprise 70th birthday party. Therese was buried in 1931 alongside her husband in the Temple Israel Cemetery. Look for more articles on famous and non-so famous cemetery occupants in upcoming issues of TI Insight.
