“CHOCHMAT LEV, A LEARNED HEART” CERTIFICATE This year, we honor Temple Israel’s committed learners with the “Chochmat Lev, A Learned Heart” certificate. With this introduction comes five new categories of learning in “The Classroom” space of the Center for Adult Jewish Learning: History; Justice, Politics, and Contemporary Issues; Bible, Rabbinics, and Philosophy; Arts and Culture; Spirituality. The Chochmat Lev certificate will be earned by those who complete five “Classroom” courses, one from each of these categories, over any length of time. Temple Israel has been a congregation of tremendous learning for many years. Our dedicated learners honor us, lift us up, and help to define our community. The Chochmat Lev, A Learned Heart certificate will allow us to honor our Learned Hearts as well as our Generous Hearts (Nadiv Lev), and to see that both are needed in the ongoing work of building this sacred community. Learn Jewish content in small groups with Temple Israel’s Rabbi Zecher, Rabbi Gubitz, and Rabbi Jacobson at no cost:

We continue our exploration of Elijah and Elisha, two mystical and mysterious prophets. Although this class is a continuation of our previous semester, there’s no need to have studied with us previously — our lessons are designed to move the conversation forward and provide background information for new scholars. Once we have thoroughly imagined and investigated the boldness, treachery, and kindness of Elijah and Elisha, we will take a deep dive into the life and wisdom of King Solomon. No prior text study or Jewish knowledge required — all are welcome.

Through group learning sessions and personal practice, we will delve into Mussar wisdom and practices using original source texts and modern interpretations. FROM BUFFALO TO JERUSALEM: A HISTORY OF AMERICAN ZIONISM AND OUR COMPLEX LOVE AFFAIR WITH THE JEWISH HOMELAND with Rabbi Dan Judson, Dean of the Hebrew College Rabbinical School (History; Justice, Politics, and Contemporary Issues) Wednesdays, 1/30, 2/6, 2/13 from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. Cost: $75 for members, $105 for non-members
As the American Jewish/Israeli relationship becomes increasingly complex, it’s crucial we step back and examine our history. Join us to explore the events and personalities which shaped American Judaism’s attitudes towards Israel. We will start by examining attempts to create a kibbutz in Buffalo, New York back in 1825 and move through Louis Brandeis’ transformation of American Zionism and onward until we arrive at the most recent debates of divestment. Together we will debate what it has meant—and still means—to be an American Zionist.
BUILDING NEW BRIDGES BETWEEN SCIENCE AND RELIGION: A JEWISH APPROACH with Rabbi Natan Margalit (Bible, Rabbinics, and Philosophy; Spirituality) Thursdays, 2/26, 3/5, 3/12, 3/19 from 7:30 - 9:00 p.m. Cost: $100 for members, $140 for non-members
The Scientific Revolution brought us changes in mathematics, physics, astronomy, biology, and chemistry—it also hinted at the beginning of a decline in religious belief. In this class, we’ll navigate shifts in science, religion, and the ways a criticalthinking approach to life can be in sync with core ideas in Judaism. Together we’ll explore the “three m’s” of Judaism: minyan (community); mikdash (the holy); and mitzvah (commandments). Prior study is not required to join the conversation.
TIKKUN: TO TAKE ON THE WORLD — LEARNING HOW TO LOBBY with Tali Puterman, TI Social Justice Educator (Justice, Politics, and Contemporary Issues) Mondays, 4/1, 4/8, 4/29, 5/6, 5/13 (Lobby Day) from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. Cost: $125 for members, $175 for non-members
This class is more than a course of learning—it’s a course of action. We will learn how to powerfully pursue social justice in our society, acquiring the tools and the know-how to repair civic brokenness. We will discover how this has everything to do with Judaism and, most importantly, we will take action. On Monday, May 13, we “pray with our feet” and travel as a group to the State House. While we learn, we will make our voices heard. You’ll leave this class with new skills focused on storytelling for justice, paradigms of organizing, the legislative process, and lobbying 101. HONORING THE LEGACY OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. SHABBAT TZEDEK: SABBATH OF JUSTICE with Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley Friday, 1/18 at 6:00 p.m. No cost.
Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley is an advocate, policy-maker, activist, and survivor. Raised in Chicago as the only child of an activist mother who instilled in her the value of civic participation, Pressley understands the role that government can play in helping to lift up our communities. After leaving Boston University to help support her mother, she worked for 14 years as a senior aide to Congressman Joseph P. Kennedy II and later Senator John Kerry. In 2009, she won the election to the Boston City Council, marking the first time a woman of color was elected to the Council in its 100year history. On the Council, Pressley has worked in partnership with residents, advocates, and other elected leaders to address the challenges facing our communities. She led the establishment of the Committee on Healthy Women, Families, and Communities; championed the introduction of a comprehensive sexual health curriculum in Boston Public Schools; convened the first “listening-only” hearing in the Council’s history, focused on gun violence and trauma; and successfully pushed for the creation of new liquor licenses that spurred economic development in previously underserved communities, among much other work. On November 6, 2018, Pressley was elected to represent Massachusetts’ 7th Congressional District in Congress; she is first woman of color to represent Massachusetts in Congress. REFLECT. Even though many recent Israeli government policies are challenging to Reform Jews in North America, we must double down on deepening our connections to our Jewish State. How do we strongly advocate for a JewishDemocratic state, that promotes equal rights, pluralism, and builds the infrastructure of peace while helping our people fall in love with Israel? That’s the challenge and great opportunity for our movement.
