This year, several of The Classrooms courses explore the theme, “Judaism in America.” We are in an unforgettable moment in American history. Today, Jews in America are asking questions like: “What does it mean to be Jewish and American?”, “What are our civic responsibilities as Jews?”, and “How has Judaism been transformed in America?” Join us for this fascinating and important exploration.

RABBIS AND ARTISTS SOUTH OF THE BORDER: RESISTING AUTHORITARIANISM with Rav Claudia Kreiman and Dr. Dalia Wassner 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. on Mondays: January 8 and 22, $60 (TI member), $80 (non-member), dinner provided

Over the course of two classes, we will explore how two cadres of Jews in South America, rabbis and artists, resisted the dictatorships of the Southern Cone. The first class will explain the role of the Jewish rabbinate during the dictatorships of Argentina and Chile, and the impact of these dynamics on Rav Claudia Kreiman’s own perspective as a Latina rabbi in the U.S.A. today. The second class will explore how Jewish women in Argentina and Chile wove memories of the Holocaust into contemporary cultural representations of the dictatorship, as they spoke truth to national policies of violence and silence.

TRACING FAMILY GENEALOGY with Rachael Cerrotti 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. on Mondays: January 29, February 5, 12, 26, $120 (TI member), $160 (non-member), dinner provided

Learning one’s history and preserving family stories is the greatest gift you can give to yourself and to future generations. But, it is a creative craft and a tedious one at that. Some choose to record and save their stories through photographs and others through oral narratives and written accounts. There is also research that involve family trees, official documents, and compiled archives from sources such as Ellis Island or the Family History Library. This course will give students the tools to begin exploring their family history and also provide a chance to share stories, research methods, and discuss ethical questions regarding documenting personal history.

IMAGINING PARADISE with Rabbi Ronne Friedman 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. on Tuesdays: April 24, May 1, 8, 15 $120 (member), $160 (non-member), coffee/tea provided

From the very beginning of Hebrew literacy, Jewish writers have created myths and stories of paradise as a desired destination, a blissful place of perfection and sometimes a figment filled with an ironic admixture of hope and despair, faith and doubt. How have these tales created by the Biblical authors, rabbis of the Midrash, Mystics, Philosophers, and Modern writers framed and formed the Jewish psyche from antiquity to modernity? Readings will include traditional texts in translation as well as writings of Agnon, Kafka, and others. Fees for this course go toward materials.

Today her disability is almost invisible and she does not fulfill the stereotype of the handicapped woman, creating a dissonance between the physical visibility and the internal experience. In her presentation she performs parts of her performance “The Other Body” and talks about her unseen disability, her personal and artistic path

FEINBERG LECTURE: UNITING THE MOST PROMISING ISRAELI AND PALESTINIAN YOUNG LEADERS USING THE POWER OF INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY with Etai Freedman of MEET at MIT 6:00 p.m. on Friday, April 6, no cost

It has been 50 years since the start of the Israeli military occupation over Palestinian territories, and 22 years since the end of the Oslo Accords, which means that majority of the population in the Middle East today has been born into this reality. Moreover, any teenager whose formative years followed 1995, does not know what it’s like to possess legitimate hope for peace. Amidst such a reality, in which the word collaboration often has a negative connotation, MEET, The Middle East Entrepreneurs of Tomorrow, brings together Israeli and Palestinian bright young leaders to create positive social and political change through technology and entrepreneurship. MEET’s intensive three-year educational program is provided by MIT instructors, which enables us to attract the brightest Israeli and Palestinian students (ages 14-17). MEET specifically targets this age range as we believe that the first step toward changing our regional reality involves providing bright young people with positive experiences working together during their formative years.

A CONTEMPLATIVE SHABBATON with Rabbi Nancy Flam 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, $10 for lunch

We will be joined by Rabbi Nancy Flam, the first Director of the Institute for Jewish Spirituality, and a leading voice in contemporary Jewish prayer and spirituality. Lunch will be served following Torah study.

“THE LAST ACT” A full production from Israeli Stage at Calderwood Pavilion’s Martin Hall in Boston’s South End 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 19, $28.50

“Theatre should be dangerous, or else it should not be!” snarls Gilly in Joshua Sobol’s dark, funny 90-minute play. This fiery, sexy drama portrays the Palestinian-Israel conflict with Strindberg’s Miss Julie. Relentless and demanding, pulsing with passion and power and deception and sensuality, this intensely potent combination of Israeli culture, political firestorm, and human emotion represents the best theatre can offer.

TILLI’S 10 ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION SHABBAT TH

with the Temple Israel Lifelong Learning Initiative 6:00 p.m. on Friday, April 20, no cost

During Qabbalat Shabbat, Temple Israel will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Temple Israel Lifelong Learning Initiative (TILLI). TILLI is Temple Israel’s signature program for active and curious adults who attend peer-led study groups on a wide array of Jewish, cultural, and social policy-themed topics. Join us as we honor the leaders and participants of TILLI, hear moving stories of educational transformation, and celebrate the community.

It has long been considered a truism that Israeli society is deeply divided between “hilonim” and “dati’im” -- between secular and religious Jews -- but a more nuanced picture can be seen in the writing of contemporary Israeli poets over the last several decades. Many self-identified “secular” writers wrestle deeply in their poetry with their relationship to Jewishness, to the legacy of the Bible and rabbinic texts, and to the personal search for God. Through a close reading of selected poems, we will explore the religious struggles of these secular writers and consider how they might speak to our own experiences of faith and doubt in the post-modern era.
