CLASSES Learn Jewish content in small groups with Temple Israel clergy, local rabbis, and scholars.
Daytime offerings: THE TI YESHIVA: LEARN TO READ THE TALMUD with Rabbi Suzie Jacobson Tuesdays, 8:00 - 9:00 a.m., every week starting October 15 No cost
Even if you have never read the Babylonian Talmud before, you will soon find yourself debating with the rabbis and considering new perspectives on aspects of Jewish law. Together we will study the translations while engaging in Hebrew vocabulary and the tricky way translations can change meanings. No prior text study or Jewish knowledge required–all are welcome. (Bible, Rabbinics, and Philosophy)
KING SOLOMON: MORE THAN YOU COULD EVER IMAGINE, BUT WE WILL TRY! with Rabbi Elaine Zecher Thursdays, 8:45 - 10:00 a.m., 11/7, 12/5, 1/2, 2/13, 3/5, 4/2, 5/7, 6/4 No cost
How much do we really know about King Solomon? We will use the imaginative force of modern midrash to explore, uncover, and read between the lines to draw out the full texture of this great, wise, and eventually failed King. Let us ask questions about King Solomon’s worldview and reflect with our own contexts to understand the life he lived, the characters he met, and the incredible influence he had, and still has, on the Jewish people and the world to this very day. (Bible, Rabbinics, and Philosophy; Justice, Politics, and Contemporary Issues)
THE HASIDIC TALE: STORIES OF WONDER, CHALLENGE, AND RENEWAL with Rabbi Or Rose, Associate Dean of the Hebrew College Rabbinical School Mondays, 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., 11/18, 11/25, 12/2, 12/9, 12/16 Cost: $125 members/$175 non-members
Eastern European Hasidism—the great mystical revival movement—had a profound impact on Jewish life since its founding in the late 18th-century. Hasidic masters developed the maiseh (Yiddish)—the tale—as a tool for spiritual and ethical development and created a vast collection of stories designed to stimulate the mind and open the heart, addressing a range of theological and ethical issues. Join us as we explore this rich and varied trove of tales, asking how these literary creations might help us in our ongoing search for meaning and purpose. (History; Arts and Culture)
LAST TUESDAY BOOK GROUP with Temple Israel Librarian Ann Abrams Tuesdays, 12:00 - 1:00 p.m., monthly starting October 29 No cost

This course will begin with a critical investigation of the Biblical story of Samson (Judges 13-16), followed by discussion of Ze’ev Jabotinksy’s 1930 novel, Samson the Nazarite and David Grossman’s 2005 book, The Lion’s Honey. The Samson saga has inspired writers to retell the story in order to reflect the culture and politics of their own times, and we will contrast the Jabotinsky’s (right of center) Revisionist Zionism of the early 20th Century with Grossman’s (left of center) early 21st century attitudes towards Israel’s conflict with the Palestinians. Course registration includes a copy of both books. (Bible, Rabbinics, and Philosophy; Justice, Politics, and Contemporary Issues)
YICHUDIM: AN INTRODUCTION TO JEWISH MYSTICISM ON RELATIONSHIPS with Rabbi Getzel Davis, Associate Rabbi and Jewish Educator at Harvard Hillel Tuesdays, 6:00 - 7:30 p.m., 11/5, 11/12, 11/19, 11/26, 12/3, 12/10 Cost: $150 members; $210 non-members
Join us as we explore teachings from the spiritual tradition on the nature of encountering the other. By exploring mystical teachings from the Zohar, Rabbi Isaac Luria, Rebbe Nachman of Breslev, Rabbi Mordechai Lanier of Izbica, and Rav Shagar, we reflect on how it might inform our 21st Century approach to relationships. Through this study, we will learn about different Jewish mystical systems and engage in guided meditation. (Bible, Rabbinics, and Philosophy; Spirituality)

When Lincoln died, the story goes, they found a drawer full of letters he never sent. What are some letters that you never sent? What are letters you wish you had received? In this class, we will use Ira Byock’s four things you have to say to live well: “Please forgive me,” “I forgive you,” “Thank you,” and “I love you”. Each class will have time for discussion, time to write a letter, and time to read our letters aloud. (Arts and Culture; Spirituality)
Do you feel lost in Hebrew? Hebrew Bootcamp will teach you to recognize the shapes and sounds of the Hebrew alphabet! Become comfortable sounding out some of the key recurring words and phrases in the Hebrew blessings for Shabbat and holidays. This course assumes no prior Hebrew experience.
