Modern Couples, Big Jewish Questions is an enriching, informative, and social opportunity for engaged, partnered, and married couples in their 20s and 30s. We will discuss issues relevant to couples in committed partnerships and explore the fundamentals of building a Jewish home and planning for your life together. Through this experience couples will meet and build relationships with others in the same stage of life. This class meets four times - three classroom sessions and one Shabbat dinner learning session. The class is open to anyone who is curious about creating a Jewish home.

INTRODUCING: “CHOCHMAT LEV, A LEARNED HEART” CERTIFICATE In this New Year of 5779, we will begin to honor Temple Israel’s committed learners with the “Chochmat Lev, A Learned Heart” certificate. With this introduction comes five new categories of learning in “The Classroom” space of the Center for Adult Jewish Learning, determined by Temple Israel’s Adult Education Committee, clergy, and staff: • • • • •

The Chochmat Lev certificate will be earned by those who complete five “Classroom” courses, one from each of these categories, over any length of time. Temple Israel has been a congregation of tremendous learning for many years. Our dedicated learners honor us, lift us up, and help to define our community. The Chochmat Lev, A Learned Heart certificate will allow us to honor our Learned Hearts as well as our Generous Hearts (Nadiv Lev), and to see that both are needed in the ongoing work of building this sacred community. The Torah ends with the statement: “Never again did there arise in Israel a prophet like Moses” (Deuteronomy 34:10). Nevertheless, other prophets rose after Moses to face new and different challenges. Join us as we e xplore t wo of the early prophets: Elijah and Elisha. Their stories are intertwined with the nascent monarchies and the lives of those who surrounded them. As we explore their stories, we will encounter treachery, deceit, boldness, and kindness. We will delve into various levels of the text, with an eye toward context and world view. Together we will bring forward modern and ancient Midrash as a lens for understanding and contemplation.Open to everyone, no prior experience or text knowledge necessary!

Join us as we swim through the sea of the Babylonian Talmud! Even if you have never read the Talmud before, you will soon find yourself debating with the rabbis and considering new perspectives on aspects of Jewish law you once considered archaic. Together we will study the translations while engaging in Hebrew vocabulary and the tricky way translations can change meanings. No prior experience necessary! Jewish women have been at the forefront of social movements throughout American history. Who were these bold leaders, what drove their commitment to social justice, and how have their contributions shaped our world? What can we learn from them as we face the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century? Join Judith Rosenbaum, Executive Director of the Jewish Women’s Archive, to get to know the women upon whose shoulders we stand and the manifestations of their legacy in today’s troubling times.

DOUSE THE TIKI TORCH: A WORKSHOP SERIES AGAINST RACISM, ANTISEMITISM, AND WHITE SUPREMACY with Moishe Kavod House, led by Sam Dreyfus and Leah Varsano (History; Justice, Politics, and Contemporary Issues) Sundays, 10:00 a.m. –12:00 p.m., October 14, 21, 28, November 4, 18. Cost: $125 (members)/$175 (non-members).

Moishe Kavod House’s workshop series explores the Jewish obligation to create a more just world. Together we will examine the connection between racism and antisemitism throughout history and into the present. What does it mean to imagine a world in which Jews of all racial and ethnic backgrounds build authentic, sustained solidarity with one another? How can we evaluate our personal and family histories to identify if and how we have benefited from or been harmed by racism and antisemitism? How can we create relationships with other communities targeted by white supremacy? You will leave this course with a commitment to concrete action, ready to begin or expand your community’s justice work.

REB ZALMAN AND THE QUEST FOR SPIRITUAL RENEWAL with Rabbi Or Rose, Associate Dean of the Hebrew College Rabbinical School (History; Bible, Rabbinics, and Philosophy; Spirituality) Mondays, 7:00–9:00 p.m., October 22, 29, November 5, 19, 26. Cost: $125 (members)/$175 (non-members).

Explore the life and work of Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi (1924–2015), founder of the Jewish Renewal movement and a pioneer in North American interreligious dialogue. Together, we will read a variety of Reb Zalman’s writings on Jewish thought and practice, as well as on the need for authentic engagement across lines of difference. In these five sessions, we will examine some of the intellectual and spiritual resources—including Hasidic, Sufi, and American counter-cultural—upon which this iconoclastic seeker and teacher drew when developing his unique religious vision.

EXPLORING THE ETHICS OF TOUCH THROUGH DANCE with Ilya Vidrin of Reciprocity Collaborative (Arts and Culture; Justice, Politics, and Contemporary Issues) Sundays, 10:00–11:30 a.m., January 6, 13, 27. Cost: $75 (members)/$105 (non-members).

Trust, vulnerability, and care are crucial to our interactions, as are movement and touch. This workshop asks an often overlooked question: what can we learn about ethical, social practice from movement? Inspired by movement practices such as the Tango, Swing, and Latin/Ballroom, we will investigate what it means to partner. This workshop will focus on basic weight-shifting patterns to practice leaning, gliding, and supporting each other through movement. Blurring the lines between follower and leader, we will play with bodily rhythm, coordination, and musicality. Join us as we explore what it means to move together. TRANSFORMING FEAR: A SPIRITUAL PRACTICE LAB LUNCHEON WORKSHOP with Rabbi Ebn Leader Sunday, October 21, 1:00–5:00 p.m. Cost: $20, lunch included.

Day-to-day news can evoke fear, anger, and despair. As we act to change the external reality, we must not forget the call for internal work as well. Processing our emotions allows our external actions to be focused, compassionate, and sustainable—even in today’s political climate. In this workshop, we will study and practice an early Hasidic methodology of processing fear by setting it in the context of a relationship with God. (No prior relationship with God? A problematic relationship? That’s okay! All are welcome.) Together, through text study, silent meditation, and contemplative singing, we will explore the broader Hasidic practice of “sweetening judgment.” This process, a method of transforming thoughts and emotions through contemplation, will move us forward in our work.

ANAT HOFFMAN: “IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING” with Anat Hoffman, Executive Director of the Israel Religious Action Center Thursday, October 25, 7:00 p.m. No cost.

Temple Israel is honored to welcome Anat Hoffman and If You See Something, Say Something: An invitation to speak up when Israel strays away from its own declared vision. Israel’s Declaration of Independence ensures social and political rights to all of Israel’s inhabitants irrespective of religion, race, or sex; freedom of religion, conscience, language, education, and culture; and a country that will safeguard the holy places of all religions. There are instances where Israel goes off course. What should diaspora Jews do? In this presentation Hoffman will suggest an action guide for the perplexed on how we can support the Israeli movements for justice.

SPIRITUAL ACTIVISM: A SHABBATON RETREAT with Rabbi David Jaffe and the Temple Israel Clergy 6:00 p.m. Friday, November 16 – 6:00 p.m. Saturday, November 17. Cost: $250.

Tikkun Olam, or repairing the world, is a treasured value in the Reform movement. Tikkun Adam, inner development, is gaining more interest as Reform congregations around the country host Mussar (Jewish spiritual practice) and meditation groups. How do these two movements intersect? Come on this special Shabbat retreat to explore how social justice, Jewish spirituality, and inner development can be one integrated path and practice. We will learn, eat, talk, sing, meditate, pray, and play together as we build our community of social change leaders. This retreat is designed for those engaged in social justice activity or leadership. The retreat will be led by Rabbi David Jaffe, founder of The Inside Out Wisdom and Action Project and author of the National Jewish Book Award Winner Changing the World From the Inside Out: A Jewish Approach to Personal and Social Change.

After tweeting an excerpt from an editorial about the rise of fascist tendencies in the US, Jonathan Weisman, deputy Washington editor of The New York Times, found himself the target of the “alt-right.” He received a tidal wave of online hate, which forced him to face the startling state of American antisemitism. On Friday evening and Saturday afternoon, we will learn from the research and personal experiences he shares in (((Semitism))). Saturday evening, through a panel conversation with ADL Boston Executive Director Robert Trestan and ADL National Chair Esta Epstein, we will consider our community’s recent and current responses to today’s antisemitism and the steps we can take going forward.

Dan Nichols is a singular talent in the world of Jewish music. He is one of the most dynamic, influential, and beloved Jewish musicians in North America. Dan’s melodies have become an integral part of the spiritual and liturgical experience of countless individuals and Jewish communities. Dan will be with us on Friday, December 7 for a Qabbalat Shabbat Chanukah celebration, and on Saturday, December 8 at 6:15 p.m. for candle lighting and Havdalah ceremony followed by a “coffeehouse” musical program. On Sunday, December 9, Dan will spend the morning entertaining our FJECC Preschool, Village, and Religious School students. Made possible by a generous gift from Dr. Gabriel E. Padawer.
