Stewardship to the Community Temple University Hospital was founded in 1892 and was originally called Samaritan Hospital. Its mission was to care for Philadelphians with limited incomes and access to medical care. Today, Temple is a 740-bed medical center that continues to maintain its original mission, serving as a “safety net” for thousands who are under- or uninsured. Temple is consistently the largest provider of care to Medicaid beneficiaries and serves one of the highest volumes of uninsured patients in Pennsylvania. Temple provides a broad array of community services to both its neighbors and the greater Philadelphia region. Thanks in large measure to public funders and private philanthropists, Temple proudly safeguards its founding mission – to offer high-quality, compassionate care to all.
