RABBI ARI AVERBACH We are relearning what it means to be a community. As you will see in the following pages, Temple Etz Chaim once again feels like the synagogue we have known for the past two generations. With Havdalah and Hot Dogs, we had close to 200 people here for drumming, art projects, eating and most importantly - just being together. We hugged and talked and bumped into old friends!

Then, barely a week later, the Purim Carnival and Megillah Reading brought in the entire community - not just congregants and preschool families, but the extended Conejo Valley and beyond. With incredible volunteers (and perfect weather), we celebrated our story of survival in the face of certain destruction, all while eating and playing games.

We are building TEC again! When we started shutting down two years ago, we were certain it would be for two to three weeks – scoffing at another synagogue who announced they were shutting down for five weeks.

Shabbat services have brought in new singers and speakers, with many more lined up in the months to come. Learning continues via Zoom and inperson.

With Pesach around the corner, we look forward to hosting the Second Night Seder. To new learning opportunities, and for wonderful reasons to come back together.

SHARI MARK, PRESIDENT Purim and Passover, oh my! What a time on the Jewish calendar and at TEC. Being at the Purim Carnival and seeing the number of families and community walking the parking lot, hugging each other, playing games, eating lunch, what a joy to behold. And those delicious knishes….. Thank you to everyone who came out to support us and volunteer. It literally took a not-so-small army to make the day so special. Then the Megillah reading on Wednesday evening was pure Balagan… Chaos in the most beautiful way!

This cemented Passover as a personally significant holiday for me. It also meant that one of my first acts as a Jew was to attend a spirited, crowded, memorable seder. The seder ritual reminds us, year after year: we are in this together. Our people have been through so much, but we have always had each other.

And almost exactly two years later, we are reminded who we are as a community: robust, loving, and proud.

The idea of Purim is to have fun and boy, did we ever. Passover is also in the works with a Second Night Seder for the first time in two years. Like the meaning of the holiday— freedom— it truly feels like we are free again to celebrate our culture and beautiful traditions, together, in person. I hope you will consider attending, it is a really wonderful evening and with a new caterer, it promises to be quite a sumptuous meal.

Two years ago, I was living in Jerusalem. But instead of the raucous community seder in the Holy Land that I had eagerly anticipated, I was locked alone in my apartment. Like so many people, I laid out a seder plate for one, terrified as the first weeks of the pandemic unfolded. But here's the thing: the strongest part of that recollection isn't the pain or fear. It's actually the memory of leaning off of my balcony, singing "Echad Mi Yodea" with all of my neighbors.

It's smiling through my tears at another neighbor, also alone in her apartment, as the siren sounded telling us both that the Chag had begun. It's the anonymous somebody who left matzoh outside my door when I was sick. How lucky am I that when this plague hit, I was in the Holy Land? How lucky are we, that when this plague hit, we were Jewish? Because it is our community, our rituals, and our love for each other that has gotten us this far... whether we are in person or not.

HAVDALAH & HOT DOGS MARCH 5, 2022 After over a two-year delay and a postponement in February due to Omicron, TEC finally got a chance to celebrate its Havdalah & Hot Dogs tradition! Many thanks to the volunteers who made this a fun and exciting event. Everyone started with a yummy hot dog dinner, followed with a drum circle in Spiegel Hall led by Jeffrey Prince and Rabbi Rachel. After a wonderful Havdalah service led by Rabbi Averbach, the crowd dispersed to the multiple rooms of arts & crafts! Families were at TEC well into the night and it was a joy to see everyone together again on campus after many a delay!

MARCH 13, 2022 TEC returned to our annual Purim Carnival tradition on campus. There were multiple games, an inflatable obstacle course, a petting zoo, arts & crafts, a rock-climbing wall and more activities and prizes than you could imagine! Inside the Social Hall, a delicious lunch of Hot Dogs, Puff Dogs, Knishes, Hamantaschen and more were given out to hungry Purim participants, and our silent auction was anything but quiet. As with any Purim Carnival, it could not have happened without the generous time of our staff and volunteers. Thank you to all who attended and all who volunteered to make the TEC Purim Carnival a wonderful event and a treasured memory!

You may have heard the phrase “If you see, something, say something.” I propose we all take steps to improve our community by following this guidance and adding “do something” to the mantra. When you see a person in our community being treated poorly or discriminated against, observe the surroundings and then say something.

“Hey, did you see that?!” This is not a recommendation to confront the bad actor. “What?” Rather, say something to the targeted person. DEBBIE BLUMENTHAL April is here and Pesach is near and so our preschoolers will begin their preparation for this favorite Jewish holiday. This spring holiday preparation means that our classes are cooking and tasting Passover foods like matzah, matzah-brei, charoset and matzah ball soups. The children are acting out the story of Moses, and learning about the ten plagues, the four questions, and the Passover Seder. In each classroom, the children will participate in a model Seder, complete with the telling of the Passover story, familiar Passover songs and blessings. Our Early Childhood Education Center will be closed Friday, April 15th so our staff and families can prepare and observe the Pesach holiday.

Our classes for the 2022-23 school year are all just about filled. If you are planning on attending and have not registered yet, please contact Debbie Blumenthal for more information. We are excited to invite everyone to our April Tot Shabbat service and dinner on Friday, April 8th! Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. and the cost is $18.00 per family. RSVP to Debbie Blumenthal before April 1. The service, songs, and blessings will begin at 6:00 p.m. This is a fun, interactive service for families with preschool age children! The Temple Etz Chaim ECE Center wishes a huge mazel tov to Miss Susan Mellon for 25 years of teaching at Temple Etz Chaim. We appreciate Susan’s dedication to our school and families.

JOYCE BRONSTEIN Havdallah and Hotdogs, our annual family program, was a fun filled evening of food, crafts and activities. The evening began with hotdogs, followed by a beautiful Havdallah service led by Rabbi Averbach, Rabbi Rachel and Jeffrey Prince. Afterwards, everyone had the opportunity to make Passover themed crafts. An extravaganza of this nature could not have taken place without wonderful and hardworking individuals. All those involved in Havdallah and Hotdogs, from conception to fruition, work diligently to make this evening the success that it was. Yasher Koach to our donor family for their generous annual sponsorship of this program which allows us to offer this event at a very reduced cost to families.

We celebrate Passover this month which reminds us that our ancestors were refugees and many of us have relatives that also had to flee their homeland. The Social Action Committee is part of the Conejo Interfaith Refugee Team that is helping refugees throughout the world that are settling here, locally. We collect furniture, items for kitchens, baths, computers, cell phones, gift cards, etc. Please refer to the Sign-Up Genius. Smaller items can be dropped off or shipped to our main Temple Office during business hours. We can pick up the furniture.

The Pet Supply Drive was a huge successful Shelter Hope Pet Shop. Thank you to Patty Kaye and Merrill Kaminsky for organizing it and to all those who donated. We will be Feeding the Hungry on April 5th. Please sign up to donate items on the Sign-Up Genius so that we can provide a delicious and nutritious lunch to 80 local residents. On April 24th we are planning a Mini Mitzvah Day from 9:30am-12:00pm to make no-sew blankets, crochet blankets and baby hats. Everyone is invited. Join us for coffee and bagels after dropping off the kids at Religious School. For those of you who would like to crochet yarn and hooks will be available. We are hoping to start a crochet group on Sundays lead by Ilana Ulman.

The Clergy Search Committee would like to thank you for your patience and trust in us this past year. As we continue to search for a wonderful clergy member we know many of you have questions about what the next year will look like. We're currently exploring having an interim cantor position for one year, and potentially catering the post to full or part time to fit the needs of both the congregation and the participants. Because our synagogue is so well-loved, we have the unique benefit of having a multitude of talented and willing interim participants. The CSC is excited to kickstart our efforts once again in the quest for someone who will help TEC grow and thrive alongside Rabbi Averbach. We are still very much dedicated to our collective cause, and the ultimate goal of finding a clergy member to help build the best and brightest future for our community. March was a busy month for WOTEC. We were finally able to have our presentation from Sharsheret, about health and cancer prevention. Thank you to all who attended. This was followed by our “Walk and Nosh” a week later. Thank you to Dana Gallenberg, our Programs VP, who planned snd our together these two events.

And now, it’s spring! Flowers are blooming and Pesach is just around the corner. WOTEC is sponsoring an evening of flower arranging on April 12, just in time to make a beautiful centerpiece for your Seder table! Please watch for information about this event, or contact Dana for more information.

Rabbi Geoffrey Mitelman was our distinguished Scholar in Residence. He discussed science and God, the concept of self, the impact on our interactions, and the evolution of morality.

We are in the process of putting together a slate of officers for next year’s WOTEC board of directors. If you’re interested in taking on a position, please let me know! We’ll be sending out a notice with the slate, which will be voted on at our May event, as soon as possible. As always, if you have any questions or need any information about WOTEC, I am always available. Wishing you all a happy Pesach. I’m looking forward to celebrating with my family and friends. The Men’s Club/Women of TEC Shabbat will be observed on April 8th and 9th. Join us for meaningful interactive services. Ladies and gentlemen, come whale watching with us on Sunday, April 10th. Island Packers in Oxnard will be taking out on their large boats, and there is a strong chance that we will see blue whales. The fares are about $40 for adults, and about $30 for kids 12 and younger.
