Rabbi’s Message

Rabbi Richard Spiegel rabbi@templeetzchaim.org

As I sit to write this message before our upcoming High Holy Days, I feel a great sense of nostalgia. This will be the 18th High Holiday Services which I will be leading as the Rabbi of Temple Etz Chaim. It will also be the last one. Next summer will be a time of transition in our Temple and a new Rabbi will officiate at the services. So as we move close to the New Year 5778, I want to first thank all of the members of our Temple and guests who have helped make my welcoming the New Year so meaningful, so uplifting, and so glorious for these past 18 years. When I look out and see our large Sanctuary so full - with old friends and new members, I feel such a sense of excitement and anticipation. Just by our being together, it is easy to recognize the importance and significance of our Days of Awe – our most sacred days. Yet as wonderful as it is to usher in the New Year as part of a large and prominent congregation, the truth is that at this time of year what is even more significant is that we stand alone – each of us – before our G-d. These are holy days because of the precious work each of us must do. This is a time for looking inward – for repenting, for seeking forgiveness, for atoning for our sins. This is the season for truly examining our lives – for considering how we can live better – and for dedicating ourselves to doing just that. This is our most serious time of the year. In one of the old Machzorim (High Holiday Prayer Books) of the Conservative movement it is written: “Remember us for life, O King, who delights in life.” “We repeat this prayer throughout the High Holy Days. In the year gone by did we fill our days with the kind of life that delights the King? Did we waste our days in the year gone by? Did we value the treasure of life? Did we appreciate our family and friends? Did we flee from others, from ourselves, from G-d? And what will we do with a New Year?” So we have two different aspects to our observance of our Days of Awe. One part is to be together with a large congregation at our Temple and to feel connected to an ancient and modern people. The second part is to look inward, and, by ourselves, to ponder the highest ideas and ideals in life. I hope that each of us will be successful in both of these realms and that our High Holiday observance will lead to a good and successful year. The year 5778 is almost upon us. Linda joins me in wishing each of you and your families a Shanah Tovah – a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. May 5778 truly be the best year yet in each of our lives. Rabbi Richard Spiegel

L’Shanah Tovah and Ketivah v’Chatima Tovah! PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Sherri Finn, TEC President president@templeetzchaim.org

As summer comes to an end, I reflect upon all of the wonderful happenings here on our Temple Etz Chaim campus. Family Summerfest started the summer off as over 50 families enjoyed loads of activities, games and food together. Our brand new summer camp, Camp Conejo Creek, has been full of life and great opportunity for our synagogue and community families. The Infant Care Center is bursting at the seams and our Preschool enrollment is boomin, in turn, Debbie Blumenthal has had to legally increase its capacity twice in the past year.

As we move from summer into the High Holy Days, we have so much to be thankful for and so much to look forward to. This New Year will bring many new opportunities for all of our families. As Rosh Hashanah approaches, let us reflect upon this past year, work towards bettering what we want to change, and enjoy what this next year will bring for all of us. Have a Sweet, Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year! Shanah Tovah

Sadly, we said goodbye to Laurence Harris and Rebecca Haimowitz-King as they left to pursue other careers, but happily we have welcomed Mandy Danzen as our new Executive Director and Shelly Ostrow as our new Clergy Assistant, both melding perfectly into our Temple home. As you look around the campus you will see many new and exciting changes. Brand new entry systems and cameras on our buildings, as well as new bollards in front our buildings which are part of our new security system. 4

PRESCHOOL

Debbie Blumenthal, Director of ECE debbieb@templeetzchaim.org

Smiling faces. Happy voices. These are just some of the things teachers love to see and hear on the first day of school. Most children are excited about going to preschool. But adjusting to a new environment can be difficult. Young children, just like adults, always feel more comfortable if they know what to expect. These are some strategies that will help your child feel comfortable in his/her new environment and get into the swing of things. 

Of course the classroom teachers and I will also be available to help with this separation time. The teachers, in their loving way, will comfort and engage your child in activities as you leave. It may take a few days, even weeks for your child to be comfortable enough to separate easily.

Ahead of time, come visit our school, new classroom and meet the teachers.

The entire preschool will be celebrating the New Jewish Year during the month of September. Rosh Hashanah begins on the evening of September 20th. WE PROUDLY CONGRATULATE OUR B’NAI MITZVAH Emily Merjan 9/2/17 I am a 7th grade Honors student at Los Cerritos Middle School. I enjoy competing in Odyssey of the Mind, performing in musical theatre productions, doing Tai-Kwon-Do, swimming and volunteering in many different organizations through the National Charity League. I am excited to become a Bat Mitzvah on the same bimah where my Mom was Bat Mitzvahed and my Mom and Dad were married.

Mia Senderov 10/14/17 My name is Mia Senderov. I'm in 8th grade at LCMS. I love dancing, baking, playing saxophone and spending quality time with my family & friends. I can't believe how much I’ve learned in the four years at TEC-from not knowing how to read in hebrew to becoming a Bat Mitzvah. I’d like to thank my parents, Rabbi Spiegel, Hazzan Pablo, Joyce Bronstein and Betty Zonshine for supporting & helping me!

Annie Wynner 10/14/17 Hi, my name is Annie Wynner. I am in 8th grade at Colina Middle School. I love playing soccer for the Thousand Oaks Football Club, going to the beach, and spending time with my family and friends. My favorite subject in school is History. I have attended Temple Etz Chaim Religious School since kindergarten and I enjoy learning something new about Judaism every time I walk into a classroom. I recently travelled to Israel and spent lots of time in Jerusalem and the Old City. I loved learning more about the ancient history of Judaism. I am looking forward to my Bat Mitzvah. I would like to thank Hazzan Pablo, Rabbi Spiegel, and Joyce Bronstein. I also want to give a special thank you to my wonderful tutor, Rivka Moscovitch. Finally, I am so appreciative of my brother, Ethan, who pushes me to be my absolute best, and my parents who encourage and support everything I do.

What’s “Brewing” on the Wish List? We are in need of two Keurig coffee makers and/or two coffee urns to be donated so we can start a coffee station in the Rotunda for congregants. Please contact Tami Wank, Community Outreach, at outreach@templeetzchaim.org to donate.

SHARING NACHES

Pride, gratification, pleasure, satisfaction, delight; proud enjoyment. A Yiddish word meaning that you are happy and proud, especially of someone’s accomplishments. The word has entered the English language in the form “nachas” or “naches” and is listed in some dictionaries. Each Friday night Shabbat Service, Rabbi asks: “Tell me something good that happened this week you’d like to share?” This NEW MONTHLY FEATURE will highlight wonderful naches in each bulletin. Don’t be shy. It’s okay to brag, we want you to share your naches! Please submit to: outreach@templeetzchaim.org or in the heart-shaped lucite box outside the Temple office, forms are located there for your ease of bragging!
