Letters from Our Leaders Rabbi Ari Averbach
rabbiaverbach@templeetzchaim.org
Israeli writer Etgar Keret wrote, “Understand that you are part of something bigger, that we’re all one living, injured, bloodied human fabric. That this disease called ‘caring’ might be rare, but once you catch it, it’s incurable.” While he is usually cynical in his approach to humanity, he has a deeply Jewish lens on what it means to be part of a community. This is what life in Israel feels like for him – an extended family, for better or worse. People who have your back, will take you in, and will tell you the difficult truth to your face. I heard a line recently that broke my heart: “Everyone wants a village, but no one wants to be a villager.” We know how important it is when people show up at the most important moments in our lives. To look around weddings or Bnai Mitzvah and get choked
up knowing that these people came out to celebrate with us. How special that some of these people braved air travel (or the 405!) to lift our spirits and lift us up in chairs. But we know that this does not just happen. It takes a lifetime of building relationships and showing up for others in their times of need. It takes bringing meals to them and being a shoulder for them to cry on. Once you feel that you have caught the condition of “caring” that Keret describes, you realize you want to be part of a village, a community where you can show up for others as much as others show up for you. This is what we try to create at TEC: a covenant to each other to create a sacred village.
Noam Fields-Meyer Gould, Hazzan Noam@templeetzchaim.org
What a meaningful High Holiday season. My favorite moments came during the Torah service, watching who walked up to read. So many of our readers were kids, and so many were adults who hadn’t read much before. Standing near them by the bimah was a gift. Torah reading is the closest we come to meeting our tradition face to face. You stand over the scroll, the letters inches away, and you give an ancient text a voice for everyone in the room. Jeff Summit, who interviewed Torah readers across the country for his book Singing God’s Words, describes the experience as
4
“singing God’s words in God’s own tune.” That song doesn’t belong only to the reader, though. Reading for the congregation is a major mitzvah because the community can only hear the Torah when someone is willing to read it. If you’d like to try, Chaplain Benny and I would love to help. We’ll walk you through the whole process, from learning the trope to your first time at the bimah, at whatever pace works for you. I promise it’s also a lot of fun. Just email me at noam@ templeetzchaim.org. Wishing you all a wonderful fall!

Dan Lubetkin, President dan@templeetzchaim.org
The year was 2014, and we were regulars at Tot Shabbat. We were new to Temple Etz Chaim, and I was immediately inspired by the warmth of those early Friday afternoon services. Amidst felt stories and challah, there were also iconic songs. Songs with familiar refrains, none more familiar than the one that ends “...dancing, dancing, dancing with the Torah.” Preschool kids were encouraged to love, appreciate, respect, and—yes—even dance with the Torah. And the kids loved that song. As adults, we get that same opportunity on Simchat Torah. Dancing with the scroll signifies our deep love and adoration for something central to Jewish life. What you might not realize is how much thoughtful care goes into the creation of a Torah. From the specific ink and parchment to the spirit of the scribe, a Torah doesn’t just materialize out of thin air. It is painstakingly crafted with precision, kindness, and passion. And on Tot Shabbat, TEC’s kids were invited to embrace that sacred craftsmanship with pure joy. Dancing takes effort, devotion, and heart. For anyone who has seen me at a wedding or a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, I can confidently state that I am a pretty okay dancer. Regardless of the style, when you move to music, you know that feeling: Total... reckless... abandon. Throwing caution to the wind. Embracing the fun despite how silly you might look.
Best of all, you’re smiling. Nobody dances angry... (unless it’s a Dance-Off, but I’ll save that for another article.) That is why we teach our children to dance with the Torah. Dancing is an act of joy, and as Jews, loving the Torah is central to who we are. This fall, Temple Etz Chaim is welcoming a new dance partner. Thanks to a generous donation from a TEC family, our congregation is receiving a new Torah, and you have a unique opportunity to become a permanent part of TEC history. Here is how you can participate: On Sunday, October 25, join us as a visiting scribe guides congregants in inscribing the final letters onto the sacred parchment. If you haven’t already, check your email for details on how to reserve your spot to write a letter in the scroll. And on Sunday, December 6, mark your calendar for the official dedication event as we welcome this beloved new scroll into our TEC family. Dancing may be an act of joy, but Dancing with the Torah is an act of love and appreciation. Join us so you can share in this unforgettable experience. And as for the new Torah? Save the last dance for me.
Benny Sommerfeld, Chaplain benny@templeetzchaim.org
Sukkot is our family’s favorite festival, is it yours? Our oldest daughter was born the day after Yom Kippur; hence her early birthday parties were held in the Sukkah. The warmth of being held by the divine in a Sukkah with joy, family, and friends is a stark contrast to Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. I have learned from studying Chasidut that Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are present in Sukkot. We have 7 emotional attributes (Sefirot) which are present during the week. They are brought to us through our prophets, Ushpitzin, and prophetess, Ushpitzot. There are 7 days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The core difference is in the direction of energy and purpose between the time periods. While Sukkot is a time of revelation pulling these divine energies down into our physical Sukkah, the 7 days between the High Holidays are about returning to Hashem and ascend to the highest level of our souls, with a climax at Neilah.
www.templeetzchaim.org
The Sukkah represents Hashem’s Cloud of Glory, which was the cloud that surrounded the Israelites when they were wandering in the desert. The incense ceremony by the high priest on Yom Kippur started the “cloud.” Hashem turned it into a shield protecting the Israelites. Without this protection by Hashem, the Israelites would not have survived the 40 years in the wilderness. One of the most important aspects of the Sukkah is the covering of the “roof”, Schach, סכך. The numeric values of the letters are: Samech, = ס60; Chaf, = כ20; and Chaf suffit, ך, = 20. The sum equals 100, which is the total number of Shofar blasts, on Rosh Hashanah. Hence all High Holidays are deeply tied together with the hope that we become a better version of ourselves, drawing near to Hashem and the Torah. Chag Sameach!

TEC Education Joyce Bronstein, Religious School Director joyce@templeetzchaim.org
On October 25, we look forward to coming together as a TEC community for Mitzvah Day. This year will be especially meaningful as we welcome and dedicate a brand-new Torah to Temple Etz Chaim. In all my years at TEC, we have never had the opportunity to dedicate a brand-new Torah in our synagogue. This is a truly special moment for our entire community. Rabbi has been personally involved throughout the process, working directly with the scribe to select the font and the poles for the Torah. So much thought and care have gone into creating this beautiful Torah for our congregation. Our entire TEC community will have the unique opportunity to take part in this sacred mitzvah by writing in the Torah. What better way to come together and become part of this special moment? I hope everyone will participate in the dedication. May we read from this Torah, learn from it, and celebrate with it for many, many years to come.
for the children who will receive them. This year, we will donate 50 filled backpacks to children at Casa Pacifica. This project is so meaningful because it is hands-on and involves all of our students. Watching their excitement as they participate in this mitzvah is truly heartwarming. They are learning that even a small act of kindness can make a difference in another child’s life. Thank you to everyone who supports Mitzvah Day and helps make these experiences possible. The dedication of our new Torah, packing backpacks for children at Casa Pacifica, and all the other acts of kindness that day will fill my heart with sincere appreciation for our wonderful TEC community. TEC members are truly outstanding!
A huge Todah Rabah to the Ghozland family for initiating the idea of gifting TEC with a new Torah. They brought this beautiful idea to Rabbi, and we are so grateful for their generosity. The Ghozland’s are a very special family, and I have had the privilege of getting to know them over the past few years. We are so fortunate that they chose to make our community their home. Their generosity reminds us that one family can make a tremendous difference. When we come together as a community, we truly shine. Mitzvah Day will also continue our annual project benefiting the children at Casa Pacifica. We will collect school and art supplies and ask our TEC families to help offset the cost of the backpacks we purchase. Our Religious School students in grades K–7 will fill the backpacks with the new supplies and create special cards

What a sweet and joyful time we’ve been having in the Infant Center and Preschool! Our little learners have been busy celebrating the High Holidays through hands-on learning, singing, dancing, tasting, exploring, and playing. We dipped our apples in honey and talked about having a sweet new year. We practiced saying “I’m sorry” and thinking about how we can make kind choices. We shook the lulav, smelled the etrog, sang songs in the Sukkah, and celebrated Shabbat together. It was especially wonderful to see so many of our ECE families at our Family Service. Seeing our children and families celebrating
together made the morning extra special! This week, the fun continues as our classes head into the Sukkah to eat, sing, dance, and shake the lulav. We’ll be filling our days with lots of joyful Jewish learning, laughter, and opportunities to explore together. We love watching our children experience the beauty of our traditions in ways that are meaningful, engaging, and just right for their little hands and hearts. Wishing all of our ECE families a Shanah Tovah—may it be a sweet, happy, and joyful year!

Phyllis Dankberg, President, Women of TEC It’s almost time to Fall back and The Women of TEC have been busy planning programs for the 2026/2027 year. The first event, our annual Ice Cream Social, is on Tuesday, October 13th. This is a wonderful, casual opportunity to kibitz with friends while enjoying some yummy ice cream. This event focuses on our fund raising efforts to support Torah Fund. Women’s League for Conservative Judaism our parent organization is dedicated to the support of Torah Fund; through our philanthropy we can give student scholarships to future Rabbis, Cantors, Educators and Social Workers around the world. The Women of Temple Etz Chaim work vigorously to support this program. If you have a love for ice cream or just want to help support the program come join us. In addition to our work on Torah Fund, The Women of TEC give scholarships to our own young people. Camp Scholarships for Jewish Day and Sleep-away camps are available. You can find out more about the program at The Camp Fair on October 18th at TEC. Lindsay Halper, Trustee, Social Action Did you know that the final commandment in the Torah is the 613th Mitzvah, which is participating in the honor of writing a Torah? And we have that opportunity this Mitzvah Day on October 25th at TEC! The Ghozland family is generously donating a brand new Torah scroll to Temple Etz Chaim in honor of their son Jonah’s Bar Mitzvah. Our congregation has the unique opportunity to not only watch first-hand the Torah being written, but each person or family who sponsors a letter will fulfill the 613th Mitzvah by assisting the Sofer (or Torah scribe) in writing a Hebrew letter with him in the Torah scroll using a special quill. We will learn of the letter’s importance and the significance of the word that we help to write in the Torah. And our experience of watching, writing, and learning, will fulfill a duty of l’dor v’dor as the Torah

is chanted, studied, and passed from generation to generation in Temple Etz Chaim. Mitzvah Day will also be filled with meaningful activities, including lunch making for the hungry, learning to tie tzitzit, knitting baby hats for Shaare Zedek Medical Center, making no-sew blankets for Buena Vista Hospice, planting in the TEC community garden, Wimple (Torah belt) making, Tour the Torah with Benny Sommerfeld, filling backpacks for Casa Pacifica sponsored by Religious School, children’s activity area, and more! And don’t forget to drop your plastic bags (or plastics that stretch and do not tear) into the Recycle Beyond the Bag bin, as we work together in keeping plastics out of the landfill. What an incredible way to connect with others in our community and beyond!

Owen Ishibashi
October 24
Hi! I’m Owen Ishibashi, and I’m 14 years old. I’m a pretty normal teenager growing up in Southern California with my parents and two sisters. I love football, surfing, riding my bike, and hanging out with my friends. Becoming a Bar Mitzvah is something my family has always wanted for me, and over the last two years, I’ve put a lot of work into getting here. My greatgrandmother was a Holocaust survivor, and my younger sister is a leukemia survivor. My family has been through a lot, and we’re definitely not perfect, but we love each other and keep showing up for one another. Judaism has always been a part of my life, connecting me to my family, my history, and the generations before me. Becoming a Bar Mitzvah has made me appreciate where I come from, the people who helped get me here, and everyone celebrating with me today. 10
