Letters from Our Leaders

When I was in my mid-twenties, I was vacillating between career opportunities. On one side was the world of film and television, what I imagined myself doing since I was a kid. Having worked in it for a few years, I was already burnt out, but the allure is magical. On the other side was Jewish non-profit, which brought me a lot of joy, as it was meaningful work, even if it was not as tantalizing.

Then my childhood rabbi, Harold M. Schulweis (z”l), sat me down to convince me to be a rabbi. We had a long talk about his life’s successes and what gave his life meaning. I applied to rabbinical school the next day.

I have read his books of philosophy and poetry, and I find myself teaching his theology. I have been looking for ways to teach his beautiful way of understanding the world to the

greater community, because I find it to be intellectually honest. Through his life’s work, he brought moral courage into a postHolocaust world that was grappling with the role of religion, culture, and ethics.

This year, I have been given the opportunity to interview other leaders in the community to learn about their ethical center and leadership, and we have recorded these conversations. They are available as podcasts wherever you find your favorite podcasts, under the name Moral Courage. We touch on the teachings of Rabbi Schulweis, while diving into how each guest is standing up for what is right in their community.

Check it out. (And you can also listen to my episode of Chaz Volk’s Bad Jew podcast: Why do we fast on Yom Kippur?)

The Adult Bnai Mitzvah program is an example of how our temple community can nurture spiritual wellbeing. On October 26, the Adult Bnai Mitzvah class was reaching its first milestone. They started the new Torah reading cycle for the year 5785. The class led the Shabbat services and read from the Torah. Their journey began a year ago when Gail Simpson taught the Hebrew alphabet from A to Z for three months. Betty Zonshine and I created a curriculum where the objective was to read from the Torah, lead shabbat services, understand the meaning of the prayers and the choreography when chanting/singing the prayers. Our Shabbat prayers and rich calendar became the backbone of our curriculum. We had many sessions discussing the different calendar events that happen during the year. Rabbi Averbach was part of teaching the in-depth understanding of what it means to live a Jewish life in this context. Betty Zonshine and I taught the meaning of the

prayers and how to lead services from the Bima.

Most of the class were reading Torah for the first time. Jake Douglas, Michelle Diamond Hopstone, David Michaels, Jill Rosenberg, Ilana Sweet, Iris and Leon Woods, took the challenge to build their spiritual and intellectual Jewish muscles for the year. The journey was an amazing testament to resilience and overcoming personal fear. Each of them had a different story, which they shared at the service on Shabbat morning. It was an amazing weekend and services to be remembered by all of us who were present and online. Mazal Tov to you all!

This is just the beginning of lifelong learning, several of the class members have already said yes to read from the Torah again. If this sounds exciting to you let us know so we can start your journey together.

With all of my husband’s family living in the greater New York City area, every year we travel back east for Thanksgiving. It’s one of my favorite times of the year in the city, and Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. The leaves are changing color, there’s so much activity as the city prepares for the impending holiday season, and there is the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

My husband has attended, and even participated in, this parade since he was a baby. For me, I’ve attended for the last 20 years or so. It is a ritual in the Toporoff household. Led by my late father-inlaw, our whole family would walk to the parade and watch it from it’s starting point on 77th and Central Park West. Since he passed a year and a half ago, my husband now leads this brood to our spot on the sidewalk. Holding hot cups of coffee or chocolate milk to keep our hands warm, joking around with each other, watching the floats and balloons go by, and getting confetti thrown on us, it’s a tradition that I cherish deeply. After the parade, we head back to the apartment where my mother-in-law has bagels and lox from Zabar’s (if you know, you know) waiting for us.

Noam@templeetzchaim.org

My first High Holiday services here at TEC were incredibly meaningful. I want to extend my gratitude to everyone who joined and contributed to our services, whether from the Bimah, the pews, or from afar. Special thanks to the singers who volunteered their time to form our High Holiday Choir—Melissa Cohen, Alane Shechter, Cyndy and Bill Koepke, Benny Sommerfeld, and Steve Friedman—as well as to Mariano Dugatkin for his support with the choir and his artistic partnership throughout the services. A standout moment for me was singing “Veya’ateyu” in the Musaf service on Yom Kippur with my brother Ami, introducing a spirited new tune to our community that I’m sure we’ll sing again. Starting this month, I’m leading a weekly singing circle on Sunday

I’m so thankful for this family tradition and to my father-in-law, Ralph Toporoff, for getting up early every Thanksgiving Day (whether he wanted to or not) to rally our group and lead us on the 3 block walk. I’ve had some of my best times with Ralph during this parade and the memories I’ve made I will cherish forever. I’m so thankful for family traditions; of times spent with the people you love the most. And during our Thanksgiving dinner we go around the table to say what we are thankful for.

For me, I’m thankful for my family, their continued good health, and for my Etz Chaim community. And in this season of thanks, I’d also like to give my gratitude to all of you who have generously given to our Kol Nidre campaign. Your commitment to our community is awe inspiring. Thank you. And, with deep gratitude, I would like to thank the volunteers and staff who tirelessly work to make our community so wonderful and one where we can also make cherished memories together. We are fortunate indeed.

I’d like to wish you all a joyous holiday season with all of your loved ones, continued good health, and happiness.

mornings for anyone who wants to engage in Jewish music-making, just for fun. Around 9:30 am on Sundays (except 11/17 and 12/1), come join me around the piano as we explore new melodies and revisit old ones in a relaxed, no-pressure environment. Feel free to come once, twice, or as often as you like!

As the days get shorter and colder, I’m reminded of how gathering can be a balm for the spirit. This is a time when we need each other, and I hope TEC can be a warm space for us all. It’s easy to get swept up in the world’s goings-on and lose sight of what brings us together, but just as easy to show up, sing a little, and feel part of something beautiful. I hope to see you and your family in shul as we bring more light and warmth into this season.

TEC Education

Debbie Blumenthal, Early Education Director

November is here and that means the start of another great holiday season! In preparation, last month the entire preschool took a day to visit Underwood Family Farms and learn all about pumpkins! Learning about the life cycle of the pumpkin and exploring the inside of the pumpkin all leads to wonderful life science experiences for all ages. Today I saw one infant class washing pumpkins in their sensory table. As we get closer to Thanksgiving, there is sure to be some cooking and baking projects with pumpkin too!

Our Middah for November is Hakarat Hatov – Gratitude. During the months we will talk about things we are grateful for (besides all the material things), and this leads us to the opportunity to help our community and those who are less fortunate that us. Our social action activity for November will be to collect canned foods to donate.

Our November event will be a fun Fall Festival on Friday, November 22nd from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Thanks to our wonderful PTEC parents and their wonderful fundraising and planning. We look forward to this afternoon of fall play experiences and social action activities.

The ECE Center will be closed on November 28th and 29th in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Save the Date! We will be having an in–person Scholastic Book Fair December 2nd – December 6th. Books make great holiday gifts! Scholastic offers great books for all ages!

December we look forward to TEC’s Havdalah and Hotdogs –Hanukkah event on Saturday, December 14th!

Wishing everyone a Thanksgiving holiday filled with friends, family, and good health!

Joyce Bronstein, Religious School Director

I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to all of you for your generous donation of art supplies for the foster children of Casa Pacifica. Over the past weeks, I have been amazed by your generosity towards this endeavor. I am proud of the dedication, commitment, and enthusiasm everyone has shown in participating in this Mitzvah Day Project. Everyone’s efforts to help others in need reflect our basic Jewish values and create wonderful feelings inside us. TEC members, you are truly outstanding.

Looking ahead, have you signed up for Havdalah and Hotdogs? This exciting event is set to take place on December 14th. If you haven’t signed up yet, make sure to do so soon, as the price increases after December 6th. I promise a unique experience each year – this year, the theme is “Hanukkah.” Havdalah and Hotdogs is a fun evening for all attendees. We offer engaging activities for every age group around the theme. Your presence will make this day truly special! So, take out your TEC scrapbook and be ready to fill more pages with pictures, memories, and fun.

We will celebrate Hanukkah in a few weeks. Today, we think about the Maccabees and their fight for religious freedom, the first battle

for religious freedom in the world’s history.

This holiday is an opportunity to talk with your children about the brave Maccabees who fought for the very survival of the Jewish people. Hanukkah symbolizes the fight against totalitarianism in all its facets. This discussion is especially timely given the present state of the world. Children should be able to correlate today’s events to the times of the Maccabees.

As we light each candle, let’s stand together as a vibrant Jewish community on our continued quest to live freely as Jews. Let’s embrace this concept and always be cognizant of our beautiful religion, its teachings, and the important value that protecting life is essential.

It is difficult to believe the hostages are still being held in Gaza. It has been over a year, and as your family lights your Hanukkiah, let’s keep them in our hearts and pray for their freedom and peace for Israel and all the world.

I, along with my family, wish everyone a very healthy and happy Hanukkah and New Year.

TEC Community

Phyllis Dankberg & Elissa Lazarus, Co-President, Women of TEC

As we’ve just passed the five weeks of our Jewish High Holiday season I reflected on how beautiful all of the services were. A very special Thank You to our dedicated clergy. Rabbi Ari Averbach, Hazzan Noam Fields-Meyer Gould and Associate Chaplain Benny Sommerfeld. Their joint efforts made our holiday worship beautiful. Thank you as well to Cheryl Wolf our Trustee of Religion & Worship who worked for weeks to make our services run smoothly and flawlessly. And I would be remiss if I didn’t thank all of the Women of TEC who worked for weeks to provide The New Year Greeting Book and The Book of Remembrance to the Congregation. A tradition at TEC that everyone looks forward to seeing, from the current years artwork and who has a new child or grandchild or great-grandchild in their family. As we move forward The Women of TEC are enthusiastic about all of our programs for the 2024/2025 season and we hope that you will join in and enjoy them along with us. The next two events

planned are really going to be fun. On Sunday, November 17th, we are having our Paid Up Membership event this year presented as a brunch. If you haven’t paid your WOTEC dues yet there is still time! It is being catered by BSC Events and we’re having our own Rachel Pugh entertain which is always a treat. The afternoon promises to be beautiful and don’t forget all the fun prizes. Shortly after, on Sunday, December 8th we’re having “Latkes & Vodka” at an off site location. Register and bring your very special recipe for Latkes. Is it potato, sweet potato, zucchini something else???? We would love to find out. This promises to be a really fun event. Make sure that when flyers come out that you RSVP early to hold a spot. Please keep checking your Constant Contact updates and please reach out if you would like to become involved with Women of TEC either on a committee or in a leadership position. There is a place for you!

Mark Goldstein, President, Men’s Club

Shalom All! Men’s Club has been active! We hosted a CPR Training in September led skillfully and humorously by Jeff Prince. In view of the large attendance and demand, we will plan another CPR Training for those who could not attend. With Women of TEC, Men’s Club led services for Shabbat Shuva. Thank you to Steve Friedman for helping to organize the roles and participants. Men’s Club led the building of the TEC Sukkah. We were so glad to see the entire TEC community benefit from our efforts at the many events held in the sukkah. The successful TEC Friday night sukkah BBQ was made possible by volunteer grillers Myles Simpson, Benny Sommerfeld and Alan Horwitz. Thanks to others who chipped in! The sukkah also hosted our Men’s Club annual Steak, Scotch and Torah event. We had a great time. Big thanks to Marshall Rosen for organizing the food and drink and Ryan Winthrop for managing the grill. Plus, thanks to Rabbi Averbach for an entertaining and interesting talk. Men’s Club members helped handle eWaste collection on Mitzvah Day. Thanks Myles, Marshall, Irwin Barney, Steve Borochoff and newcomer Ryan Rosen.

A Dragon Fruit Orchard Visit was scheduled for Sunday November

10, but has been postponed and will be rescheduled to a future date.

The next event we are hosting is a Hike and Havdallah for the entire TEC community, Saturday, December 7. We’ll walk and hike, with a culmination of a community Havdalah. More info to come. Other upcoming events in the planning stage are a magic night, an astronomy night, and a game night for adults. Plus, a Hearing Men’s Voices program to address challenges of being a dad and grandfather is being scheduled.

We welcome your participation in organizing, leading or assisting in these programs. Please email mensclub@tempeetzchaim.org to volunteer.

On an ongoing basis, Men’s Club member Marshall Rosen is organizing the TEC Shabbat greeters. If you’d like to participate, please email us. All are welcome to our Men’s Club Board Meetings held the third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm. Upcoming board meetings are November 19 and December 17, 2024.

Be well, Mark Goldstein

Pam Friedman, VP, Social Action

Mitzvah Day was joyful this year. Men’s Club, lead by Mark Goldstein, collected E-Waste front and center. Soon their bins were overflowing. Rabbi Averbach and many other blood donors kept the Vitalant Foundation staff busy. This year’s Blood Drive collected 96 units of blood. A big shout out to Debra Levine for her hard work and dedication in making sure this year’s Drive was an immense success.

The “Make a Bird Feeder” station was a fun and popular project sponsored by the TEC Community Garden. Everyone loved making a Bird feeder and learning from Michael Lysobey and the garden volunteers about how to feed birds and our special garden. After making the bird feeder, they went down to the garden to hang their feeder and discover what a magic garden we have.

Our Donation Drive for James Store House and Conejo Closet was organized by the TEC Early Education Center. We are fortunate to have so many families in our congregation who were able to give to these two wonderful organizations. Thank you for your generosity and kindness.

New for this year’s Mitzvah Day was our partnership with Buena Vista Home Palliative Care and Hospice. Buena Vista provides loving personalized care for each patient. Kellie Swigger the Buena Vista’s Volunteer Coordinator gave us 24 No-Sew fleece blanket kits for us to make on Mitzvah Day. Once the blankets are finished, they will be returned to Kellie at Buena Vista. These blankets will be given out as birthday presents to Hospice patients. Cyndy Koepcke helped

and encouraged everyone to make the blankets. Some of our blanket makers felt more of a connection to each blanket they made knowing what a special gift it would become in the future. Each blanket is truly a mitzvah for someone in Hospice care.

Our Comfort Care Kits for Harbor House is a Mitzvah Day project that will help 100 homeless people in need. Shira Soria helped to make sure that each bag was filled to the brim with care. Each kit is designed to provide items that comfort and support. Each item in the kit from the T-shirt to the I Care about You Card from members of our TEC family packed inside will give love and kindness to someone in need. At the Feed the Hungry station, sponsored by Women of TEC, Roni Rosen and the team made over 90 lunches. The clients at Harbor House will be lined up with a smile on their faces when they pick up this lunch.

Our annual Adopt a Family event is starting right now. If your family or your Havurah would like to adopt a family in need or senior from Meals on Wheels for the holidays this year, please contact Shari Mark at smark@templeetzchaim.org. or me Pamela Friedman at pamelaf@ templeetzchaim.org. We will be happy to send more information.

I would like to give my thanks to all the many volunteers who worked so hard to make this year’s Mitzvah Day happen. Check out pictures below and continued on page 10.

Spencer Goodman November 2

Hi, I’m Spencer Goodman and I’m 13. I love three things: music, basketball, and soccer. When I’m not playing sports, I’m usually messing around with music in my room. I’ve got a piano, drums, and a bunch of other instruments that I like to tinker with. I’m really into jazz and classical music. I’m also super competitive in sports. I’ve been playing basketball and soccer for years, and I always try my best to win. That’s me in a nutshell! I’m just a kid who loves music, sports, and hanging out with friends. I’d like to acknowledge and thank the people who have been instrumental throughout my journey to become a Bar Mitzvah including Rabbi Averbach, Joyce Bronstein, Cantors Kenny Ellis and Noam Fields-Meyer Gould, Rivka Moskovitch, and all my teachers, past and present. Each person has guided me with remarkable kindness, passion, and unwavering encouragement, leaving a lasting impact on my growth and development. Shout-out to the person who made me realize you can be annoying and related at the same time. Emily, I couldn’t have gotten to split the prayers if it weren’t for you, thanks.

EMILY GOODMAN NOVEMBER 2

My name is Emily Goodman, and I’m a proud 7th grader at A.E. Wright Middle School, where I am fortunate to be part of the gifted program. Outside of academics, I’m passionate about playing soccer, and I also cherish spending quality time with family and friends. In addition, I enjoy learning Spanish and taking part in activities like snow skiing, water skiing, boating, and swimming. Although I’ve only been a part of TEC for a few years, the nurturing environment has offered me a sense of belonging and provided opportunities to grow, learn, and connect in ways I never expected. This experience has truly been invaluable to me. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to those who have been pivotal in helping me reach this milestone of becoming a Bat Mitzvah: Rabbi Averbach, Joyce Bronstein, Cantors Kenny Ellis and Noam Fields-Meyer Gould, Rivka Moskovitch, and all my amazing teachers. Their wisdom, kindness, and encouragement have been instrumental in my growth, and their influence will stay with me as I continue forward. A heartfelt shout-out to my brother Spencer, my best friend and true partner-in-crime, who has been by my side throughout this incredible experience. As we step into this next exciting chapter, I look forward to the new adventures we’ll face together.

Leo Kierman December 21

As I prepare to celebrate my Bar Mitzvah, I reflect on the journey that has brought me here. I’m Leo Kierman, a 7th grader at Lindero Canyon Middle School. Throughout my time there, I’ve made incredible friends and created unforgettable memories. When I’m not at school, you can usually find me playing baseball or jamming out to my favorite music. I’d like to acknowledge Rabbi Averbach, my wonderful tutor Betty Zonshine, and the wonderful team at TEC for their encouragement and guidance. A big thank you to my parents for always being there for me and believing in me. I’m looking forward to celebrating this special milestone with my family and friends!
